Wow, it’s hard to believe that almost a whole year has gone by since I was sworn in as the president of the South BayLong Beach chapter. It has definitely been an “unusual“ year

for all of us. First and foremost, I want to thank our board and committee members and all of our membership for the support they have given over this past year. When I became the presidentelect, I thought for sure we would be meeting again in person by the time I was sworn in as president. Then I thought for sure we would be meeting in person by the end

We’ve had virtual and in-person CE events, social events including a virtual escape room and meeting at the Hollywood Bowl for a concert. Our chapter was able to obtain ongoing industry support for meetings even though our meetings were all virtual this year. I am looking forward to the upcoming year as Michelle Ding, our current president-elect will be taking over to lead our chapter. Michelle has been a great partner this year, tag-teaming with me on meetings, communications and other responsibilities. Let’s all give her our full support in the upcoming year. Finally, I want to thank you for allowing me this great opportunity to serve as your chapter president. Sincerely, John McGady, MS, PharmD, BCPS

CSHP Seminar 2021 - Heroes Unite! By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, APh, Communications Chair

Emerging from the past year of virtual meetings due to the pandemic, the 2021 CSHP Seminar took place at Disneyland Hotel November 2-6. While the event was held in-person, registrants had the option to attend 20+ hours of CE virtually, either live or as video recording later. It was great being back on site to see people and learn in-person, but also nice to be able to watch some CE sessions from home especially when there were multiple presentations of interest scheduled at same time.

Among all the heroes in attendance, here are SBLBSHP board members and student liaisons who shined at this seminar.

(CSHP Seminar continued) SBLBSHP was also recognized for our contribution to help sponsor the Clinical Skills Competition, Quiz Bowl, and Student/New Practitioner Mixer. The seminar provided a taste of normalcy that many members have longed for during the pandemic while keeping safety precautions in place. Some attendees even took advantage of the event to "staycation" at Disneyland. In case you missed out this year, the seminar will be back at Disneyland next November. Let's hope that the pandemic will be well behind us in 2022 for more of us heroes to unite then!

Mentorship Program Encouraging the Pharmacist-Pharmacy Student Relationship By Lauren Alfano, PharmD, BCPS, Mentorship Program Co-chair

SBLBSHP continues to promote its pharmacist members to mentor local pharmacy students. January 2022 marks the end of the 2021 program and beginning of the 2022 program. This program relies on our pharmacy student liaisons to reach out to their student body to identify students who are interested in communicating with a pharmacist via monthly topic discussions, and those students are then paired with an SBLBSHP pharmacist. After completing the one-year long mentorship program, mentors are then invited to attend the SBLBSHP Installation Banquet where they are presented with a certificate of completion. The hope is that the mentor-mentee relationship continues beyond the scope of the program. Congratulations to the mentees for completing the 2021 program! A huge gratitude to our members who have volunteered to mentor pharmacy students. We look forward to another successful year in 2022!

Recap: Fall Educational Sessions By Megan Tsao, PharmD, Industry Relations Co-Chair

The SBLBSHP Chapter hosted two industry-sponsored drug education talks during this fall season. On Tuesday, September 21st, our members joined Kelley Houston, Pharmaceutical Representative from Biogen, and Dr. Daniel Bandari, MD (Multiple Sclerosis Center of California), to learn about multiple sclerosis (MS) at Spaghettini in Seal Beach, CA. Dr. Bandari’s lecture, “Exploring Risk: The Knowns and Unknowns of MS Therapies,” provided valuable information about the role of various therapies as practitioners continue to gain a better understanding of comprehensive care for patients with MS. On Wednesday, October 20th, our members attended another education dinner, this time hosted by Incyte Pharmaceutical Representative and SBLBSHP chapter member, Trudi Demos. At Michael’s on Naples in Long Beach, CA, Rhonda Hewitt, NP (Stanford Cancer Center), engaged our members in discussing “Clinical Cases in Polycythemia Vera: When to Intervene with Jakafi® (ruxolitinib) – Focus on Adults with Polycythemia Vera Who Have an Inadequate Response to Hydroxyurea.” Both events consisted of exquisite dining, great company, and incredibly insightful clinical discussions! Our committee would like to thank all who participated in these events! We look forward to hosting you all again at our winter events! 9

Fall 2021

USC School of Pharmacy Chapter Updates By Heather Yen, USC Student Liaison On October 22nd, the USC student chapter hosted Legislative Day. Every year, this event serves to educate student pharmacists on the role of pharmacists in legislation, and how we are able to advocate for our profession to move it forward. This year, we had the privilege of hosting the distinguished guest speakers and panelists Susan Bonilla, Dr. Richard Dang, Dr. Kari Franson, Dr. Lisa Gunther, Dr. Steven Gray, and Dr. Rajan Vaidya. Senator Susan Rubio had also shared some inspiring words to our students via video to our attendees. Through this event, student pharmacists were able to connect with pharmacy leaders involved in legislation and learn about what they can do to be proactive about advocacy for the profession. On November 11th, the USC student chapter hosted Meet the Directors. This was a special occasion because it was the first in-person networking event that we have hosted since prepandemic. We had the opportunity to host esteemed leaders from various areas of pharmacy, including Dr. Angela Jeong and Dr. Erwin Jeong from SBLBSHP. We had a large attendance of student pharmacists who were able to meet and connect with our leaders in pharmacy. Every year, this event serves to provide our student pharmacists with insight that may guide their decisions for what they want their goals to be in pharmacy by giving them the opportunity to ask pharmacy leaders 11

firsthand how their experiences have influenced their paths. Our guests also continue to inspire the next generation of pharmacists by encouraging them to explore leadership opportunities within the profession. Last but not least, please join us in congratulating our chapter for being selected as the recipient of 2020-2021 CSHP Student Chapter Community Service Project Award for Smoking Cessation as well as Poison Prevention!
