We’ve had another year of uncertainty with COVID and it was amazing to witness our board’s flexibility in adapting to the changes and still able to provide different events both virtually and in-person. We also awarded the Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year Award to Muno Bholat to recognize the tremendous contributions that Muno had made in advancing the practice of pharmacy in his over 40 years of service to the profession. Recap: 2022 Virtual Installation By Michelle Ding, PharmD, BCPP, APh, President

Our Chapter held our 2nd virtual Board Installation on Friday, January 28th, 2022, hosted by our 2021 social affairs co-chairs, Michelle Ding and Stephy Lee. Over 30 members, guests, and students attended the event. We have originally planned our event to be in-person and was looking forward to seeing everyone again. However, due to the Omicron surge, we quickly pivoted ourselves to host the event virtually out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our members. We are very grateful for the ongoing support of our members and your flexibility during these uncertain times. The event started off introducing distinguished guests in attendance – Past CSHP and SBLB President, Steve Thompson, and Past CSHP President, Kenn Horowitz. We greatly appreciate your support of our chapter! We also had interactive pharmacy trivia throughout our event to encourage audience participation and a chance to win Amazon gift cards. We also recognized past SBLB presidents who were in attendance. Steven Thompson conducted the installation of the 2022 board. The 2021 SBLBSHP President, John McGady, was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his leadership during another year of uncertainty with COVID. John, then, recognized the 2021 board members with a speech of appreciation. 3

2021 SBLBSHP Pharmacist of the Year Muno Bholat, Pharm.D. By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, APh, Communications Chair

[Left] Dr. Muno Bholat was presented with his award at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, Torrance; [Right] Dr. Bholat with his management team, with whom he humbly shares the honor and gives credit for his achievements

The Kelly Hales Memorial Pharmacist of the Year Award was established in 2011 to recognize a SBLBSHP member who has made significant, influential, tangible, and sustained contributions to the practice and profession of pharmacy in California. The award is named after Kelly Hales, an executive pharmacy director of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, who tragically lost his life in a workplace shooting. Our chapter was pleased to present this award to Dr. Muno Bholat, an accomplished pharmacy director with 40+ years of service to the California healthcare system. Since 2015, he has been the pharmacist-in-charge for Providence Health and Services in Southern California, transforming the pharmaceutical operations at Providence Little Company Medical Centers in Torrance and San Pedro as well as Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. In this capacity, he has

been responsible for managing up to 129 FTE and an annual average operating budget of $58 million. Under his leadership, he expanded the roles of technicians and pharmacists. Clinical Pharmacist Specialists are embedded in clinical teams across specialties including Neo/Peds, Emergency Medicine, Behavioral Health and Critical Care. He has established collaborative care clinics for Advanced Practice Pharmacists to manage outpatients on high-risk drug therapy. He started his career as a staff pharmacist working at Little Company of Mary; Torrance Memorial; Harbor/UCLA Medical Center; and Pacific Hospital in Long Beach. In 1993, he founded a startup, Premier Infusion Care, which continues to provide home healthcare for patients in Southern California. Also in 1993, Little Company of Mary Hospital promoted him to the Pharmacist-inCharge. He subsequently delivered several new business models and programs, including incorporation of the South Bay Medical Group and an employee benefit program that provided a model for a benefit plan rolled out to all Little Company employees in Southern California. In 2001, he became the Pharmacy Director, then led the way in developing an innovative patient-centered pharmacy model which placed safety at its heart. This included creating cross-disciplinary pharmacotherapy clinics, embedding electronic medical records as Executive Chair of the Providence of Southern California Pharmacy Excellence Council, and developing a transition of care program, ensuring the safe transition of patient medications from admission to discharge. Dr. Bholat was formally recognized at the 2022 virtual installation, at which time he gave a sincere speech reflecting on his career and expressing gratitude for his pharmacy team. Again, please join us in congratulation Dr. Bholat - 2021 SBLBSHP Pharmacist of the Year!

Legislation Updates By Cameron Rehmani Seraji, PharmD Candidate 2024, Legal A airs Co-Chair

E-Prescribing 2022 Update (BPC 688) E-prescribing allows healthcare providers to enter prescription information into a computer (or other device) and securely transmit the prescription to pharmacies using a special software program. Eprescribing will be important for providing instant notification of allergies, drug interactions, and duplicate therapies, preventing prescription drug errors, monitoring controlled substance prescriptions, etc. • BPC 688 put into effect new rules regarding the electronic transmission of prescriptions (Eprescribing) between prescribers and pharmacies. • BPC 688 does not apply to chart orders for registered patients in healthcare facilities. Prescriber Requirements

Pharmacy Requirements

Issue electronic data transmission prescriptions on behalf of a patient.

Receive electronic data transmission prescriptions on behalf of a patient.

Transmit the electronic prescription to a pharmacy selected by the patient.

Forward or transfer to another pharmacy if requested by the patient. Pharmacists may continue to dispense medications from legally valid written, oral, or faxed prescriptions. Pharmacists are not responsible for verifying that a prescription falls under the exception list.

Exceptions to BPC 688 where E-prescribing may not be required 1. Issued by a veterinarian 2. HSC 11159.2 prescriptions (controlled substance prescriptions for terminally ill patients). 3. For ER or Urgent Care prescriptions when: o Dispensing pharmacy is located outside California. o Issued to a non-California or out-of-area resident, homeless patient with no regular pharmacy, or patient’s preferred pharmacy is closed. o Still must issue prescription electronically. 4. Where prescriber and dispenser are within the same entity. 5. Due to technical dif culties, including changes due to NCPDP Script Standards and updates where prescriber believes e-prescribing would result in an unacceptable delay in therapy.

Recap: Annual Board Appreciation Dinner By John McGady, MS, PharmD, BCPS, Immediate Past President

Our annual Board Appreciation Dinner was held on Dec 17th, 2021 at Lazy Dog Restaurant in Torrance. 11 Board members were able to attend. We dined outside, enjoyed great conversation and had a delicious meal together. Since we had not met in person most of 2021, this gathering felt extra-special to me. It reminded me of the importance of celebrating as a group, all that we accomplish in our chapter. It reminded me of the need for camaraderie and friendship that we establish through working together as we support and improve our profession. I want to thank our board and committee [In attendance] Cynthia Bennett, Rosalin Preechakul, Jennifer Fong, Matt Kamada, John McGady, Michelle Ding, Chad Hudson, Erwin Jeong, Angela Jeong, Diana Tomicic, Dan Bauman

members and all of our membership for their contributions and support during 2021. I am looking forward to the upcoming year as Michelle Ding, our current president will be leading our chapter.

USC School of Pharmacy Chapter Updates By Heather Yen, USC Student Liaison

Meet the Residents 2022

On February 3rd, the USC student chapter premiered a new event named Meet the Residents. This event hosted several current residents and fellows from various programs and featured a series of networking sessions over Zoom with the student pharmacists. The objective of this event was for student pharmacists to engage with residents and fellows to ask them about their programs and their experiences thus far. For students who are unfamiliar with residency or fellowship, this event was geared to help them gain a better understanding of what these programs entail. For students who were already familiar with residency or fellowship and expressed current interest in pursuing one or the other upon graduation, this event was intended to help them understand what to expect as they approach applications and interviews for post-graduate programs.
