As we approach the close to our summer, I hope you will take time to experience some of the events that our chapter’s board of directors has planned. As you thumb through this issue of the SBLBSHP Newsletter, you will see that over the next few months we will have a lot going on! From continuing education opportunities to brewery tours, the board has worked tirelessly to plan these events for you, our members. It truly has been an honor to work with my board of directors. The amount of time spent planning, attending meetings, and sending emails in order to put on these events is astounding. Remember, this is all done on a volunteer basis! Having said that, when we are able to serve our community (ie. Teach underprivileged communities about chronic diseases) or be directly involved with legislation within our profession, our work can really be rewarding.

By Tim Chou, Immediate Past President Summer is the time to hit the beach and it’s also the time to hang out with your fellow SBLBSHP members at our annual Summer Social event! This year on Saturday 8/12/17, our Social Chairs Pauline Lam, Cindy La and Julie La planned a fun-filled Brewery Tour where we visited some of South Bay’s most popular breweries on a private bus! The day started off with a delicious family style lunch at The Depot sponsored by Alexion where we got to listen to a talk about “Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: Essential Aspects of an Accurate Diagnosis.” After lunch we departed on a private guided tour bus where we were educated about the history of beer brewing and also the differences/similarities of various types of craft beers. We visited Brouwerij West in San Pedro and Scholb Craft Brewery in Torrance where we enjoyed flights of their most popular craft beers. It was definitely a fun-filled day with great company as we enjoyed delicious food and unique craft beers. Stay tuned for future social events to mingle/network with your fellow SBLBSHP members!

Public Relations Update By Scott Harada, Public Relations Chair
Long Beach Rescue Mission - Diabetes
The Public Relations Committee has continued to host its Long Beach Rescue Mission Classes with this past July 21st class on diabetes presented by USC student pharmacists Sandy On and Lyndsie Okumura. Students presented on the importance of blood sugar to about 30 mission members in their newly renovated classroom with plenty of Q&A. We would like to remind our chapter members that we are actively looking for volunteers that wish to be involved in precepting for this event whether it is once or yearly. Please email myself at haradarx@gmail.com if you are interested in working with our local shelter.
Health Fair Preceptors Needed!
Every year, SBLBSHP teams up with the Bread of Life Church and USC student pharmacists in order to provide screening services to the local Torrance community. We are still actively looking for preceptors and if you are available on Saturday, September 16th from 8:30-12:00, please email me at haradarx@gmail.com! The church is located at 2780 Lomita Blvd, Torrance CA. We have lots of local sponsors, free food, are in need of Mandarin and Cantonese translators, so please come out! Thank you and I hope to see you there!

Aloha Elementary By Scott Harada, Public Relations Chair On June 5th we were invited to Aloha Elementary's Career Day where USC P2 Student pharmacists Allison Hy and Robbin Kelly De Jesus presented on how amazing it is to be a pharmacist. Our students presented to about 40 first graders and answered dozens of questions including, "Why do you love being a pharmacist?" and even hard questions like, "How does medicine make you better?" It was great to see almost everyone's hands raised when asked, "So are you interested in being a pharmacist?" We thank our student pharmacists for taking time to promote the future of pharmacy and Aloha Elementary for this opportunity.
Educational Dinners By Angela Jeong, Educational Affairs & Industry Relations Chair Hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying our chapter’s monthly educational dinner programs. In May, we were at The Chart House for “Updates and New Indications for Imbruvica” sponsored by Pharmacylics. In June, we regrouped at The Sky Room for a talk on Tecentriq by Timothy Tyler, PharmD, sponsored by Genentech. July’s program featured “CDK4/6 Inhibition and the Treatment of HR+/HER2-Advanced Breast Cancer: A Clinical Educator Presentation” at Il Fornaio in Manhattan Beach. If you have topic and restaurant ideas, please let us know. The program for August will be at The Depot in Torrance on Multiple Myeloma. See everyone there!

ASHP/CSHP WesternU Local Association Banquet Recap By Tracy Lau, Western Student Liaison
On Friday, April 28th, ASHP/CSHP WesternU hosted the End of the Year Local Association Banquet to thank and recognize our local associations for their continued support. Pharmacists from affiliate chapters of Inland Empire, South Bay/Long Beach, San Gabriel Valley, and Orange County attended to speak to students about their career in pharmacy and their involvement with CSHP. Invitations were extended to local pharmacy schools and about 30 students ranging from first to third years attended, including one student guest from USC. President of South Bay/Long Beach Society of HealthSystem Pharmacists, Dr. Matthew Kamada spoke about his career as an ambulatory care pharmacist and provided insight to students that are thinking about pursuing a residency. This event promoted student involvement with CSHP and allowed them to realize that being involved in the evolution of pharmacy goes beyond school. ASHP/CSHP WesternU appreciates all pharmacists involved in helping our students and we hope to continue working closely and growing our relationship with each local association.

Legislative Update
Summer 2017
By Daniel Kudryashov, Legislative Affairs Chair
Naloxone Protocol – State law authorizes California pharmacists to furnish naloxone without a prescription pursuant to a protocol approved by the Board. The medication may be furnished to recipients who are using opioids or who are in contact with anyone using opioids – which may be prescription pain medication or street drugs such as heroin.
Pending Legislation – Senate Bill 716 (Hernandez) SB 716 is a CSHP-sponsored legislation which aims to add a pharmacy technician and a member of the public to the California State Board of Pharmacy. In doing so, the bill will increase the total Board membership count to 15, leaving the 7 pharmacist members in the minority. Several pharmacy associations have opposed SB 716. Our own board of directors has submitted a letter of concern and a resolution requesting that CSHP put a hold on SB 716. Should CSHP choose to honor the resolution and due process, this bill will be discussed further by the House of Delegates at the upcoming Seminar 2017. [Update as of 8/21/17] CSHP has asked Senator Hernandez to consider converting SB716 to a two-year bill (read press release here) Travel Medications Regulations – Pursuant to statutes set forth in SB 493, the Board formally adopted regulations setting out standards for pharmacists to follow in order to furnish travel medications without a doctor’s prescription. The regulation took effect June 8, 2017. The regulation will make it easier for people traveling to destinations outside the United States to obtain prescription medications for conditions that
The protocol lays out specific requirements for pharmacists to screen potential recipients of naloxone and to provide training for recipients in preventing, recognizing and responding to an opioid overdose and administering naloxone. The protocol also requires pharmacists, before furnishing naloxone, to successfully complete at least one hour of an approved continuing education program specific to the use of all forms of naloxone hydrochloride administration: intramuscular injection, intranasal spray or auto-injector.
are recognized as both self-diagnosable and self-treatable by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The regulation specifies extensive training requirements for a pharmacist who furnishes travel medications: • • • • •
A qualifying immunization training program A qualifying travel medicine training program The CDC Yellow Fever Vaccine Course. Current certification in basic life support. Every two years, complete two hours of continuing education (CE) training focused on travel medicine
Before furnishing travel medications, a pharmacist must perform a good faith evaluation of the patient and notify the patient's primary care provider of furnished drugs or devices within 14 days. The pharmacist also must maintain a physical or electronic patient medication record of each furnished medication. In addition, the pharmacist must give the patient a written document that reflects the clinical 7 assessment and travel medication plan.
