William & Alice Jenkins Gallery Recognizing established artists from Florida, the nation, and beyond

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based non-profit art organization established in 1975, featuring an affordable, sequential curriculum of over 100 studio courses and workshops in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture and related media for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. Also, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to special populations from the diverse Central Florida community. Our two galleries offer changing multi-disciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation, and the world. Central Florida’s only contemporary sculpture garden showcases over 60 outdoor pieces of art. A limited number of classes are held at the Jessie Brock Community Center in Winter Garden. Crealdé’s main campus is located off Aloma Avenue at 600 St. Andrews Blvd., Winter Park, FL 32792. The office and galleries are open 9:00–4:00 on Monday–Thursday, and 9:00–1:00 Friday and Saturday. Crealdé’s community annex represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s historic African American community through a unique collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation. June 14 to September 2 33rd Annual Juried Student Exhibition. See the creativity, talent and skill of Crealdé’s students! The school’s Program Steering Committee selects some of the year’s best student work in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics and sculpture. Awards will be presented at the Annual Membership Meeting from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by a public reception until 9:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8. Please arrive early for this popular event.

Showalter Hughes Community Gallery Celebrating the art of Crealdé’s community June 14 to Aug. 10, Storytellers XVI: Geneva, Florida. Created in 1996, Crealdé‘s Storytellers outreach program brings dignity to marginalized communities through the artistic expression of teens, who learn the process of documentary photography from perception to exhibition. Storytellers XVI was led by Sherri Bunye and will feature the work of teens from the rural Seminole County community of Geneva, in partnership with the Rural Heritage Center. Funded by the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation. Image: Wheel Wall by Colin Young. August 9 & 10, Cup-A-Thon XXIX and A Starry August Night Open House. A fun fund-raiser where visitors can shop and select from hundreds of ceramic cups and bowls created by Crealdé artists, students and friends. The Cup-A-Thon is held in conjunction with open house, tours of the sculpture garden, live music, refreshments and discounted registration on Fall courses. Cup-A-Thon: Friday, 7-10 p.m. and Saturday, 4-9 p.m., and Open House Saturday 5-8 p.m. August 17 to August 31, Summer ArtCamp Student Exhibition. Since 1982, Crealdé has presented an annual exhibition featuring one work of art from each of the over 300 Summer ArtCamp participants, ages four to 17. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, sculptures and photographs, and is curated by Crealdé’s Summer ArtCamp faculty. Opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, August 17.

Heritage Center Gallery

Exploring heritage and folklore through the visual arts and humanities April 19 to September 7 Preaching to the Trees and the Animals: The Folk Art of O.L. Samuels. As the opening event for the Folk Art and Craft Festival, the Heritage Center will feature one of America’s most noted folk artists. The Tallahassee artist shows his elaborately carved wood sculptures that manifest his love for the natural world. Curated by Executive Director Peter Schreyer, the exhibition features artwork from the artists personal collection as well as pieces on loan from the Mennello Museum of American Art. Opening lecture with O.L. Samuels, 6 to 7 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, followed by a reception with live blues music from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 19. Crealdé Summer ArtCamp June 10 to August 2 Central Florida’s original ArtCamp, first created in 1982, provides an overview of the fundamentals of art-making as each student learns from professional artists in real art studios. Camps are offered for students ages 4 to 17, who are placed in age-appropriate groups of up to 13 participants. Students explore their creativity in photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and painting and drawing. That’s right, we’re going to practice handles next, as many variations as we can come up with. We’ll make covered jars with handles, casseroles, baking dishes, etc… The more handles we make, the better they’ll become. So let’s make some pots with lids and handles! Jugs, bowls, baskets, platters, teapots, jewelry, tablets, statues, tiles, buildings―these have all been born from clay, a legacy of civilization. Discussions about design in general and the completed class projects will be a part of each class. We will complete four projects during the session. TD173 Introduction to Jewelry Design

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Studio 7 Four week classes begin on June 15 or July 13. Learn fabrication methods to design and create wearable jewelry in copper, brass, and silver. Processes include filigree, stone setting, soldering, filing, embossing, coloring, and polishing. Weekend Workshops Date Night Ceramics – New!

with Vadim and Meredith Malkin Studio 4, Friday, 7:00–9:00 p.m. July 6 or August 3. Registration deadline one week prior. Clay is like a relationship; it must be pinched, molded, and designed in order to become ever-lasting. The hosts will walk you and your partner through clay projects that will be sure to make a fantastic date night. Beginners welcome; materials included. Be ready to get messy and bring some wine, we’ll provide the snacks and have a great time! Date Night takes place on the first Friday each month. $90 per couple #WKT23 Vadim Malkin is an exhibiting and award winning artist who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Florida. “Mask”arade: Clay Wall Hangings

Instructor: David Cumbie Thursday, 7:30–9:30 p.m. Studio 6 Students will work in clay creating face masks, heads and figures to be fired in the kiln. Friday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Studio 1B Designed for beginning drawing students, this class introduces the basic fundamentals and principals of drawing skills. Using the pencil as a medium for execution, students will also explore different drawing techniques and materials available to them. Students will learn techniques of measuring angles and proportions to create accurate line drawings, techniques of shading to create light and volume, and principles of composition to create dynamic, engaging images. PD105 Intro to Printmaking

Instructor: David Hunter Tuesday 6:00–9:00 p.m. 6 weeks Studio 1B For new students focus will be on relief printmaking including materials and techniques for linocuts. Monochromatic printing from single blocks and color printing from multiple blocks and reduction techniques will be covered. Learn to print from relief blocks on an etching press as well as small relief presses and barens. Advantages of different printmaking papers as well as oil-based and water-based inks will be discussed and demonstrated. Returning students can work in their own direction. Limited to 8 participants. PD107 Perspective Made Simple

Instructor: Dennis Schmalstig Monday, 7:45–9:45 p.m. Studio 1B Students will learn to use updated versions of the techniques of Rembrandt, Velazquez and Vermeer to accurately depict light effects, create three dimensional space and to achieve vibrant color. PD226 Quick Sketch Drawing NEW!

Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 Heritage Center In this exciting class students explore different techniques for quick sketching (rapid visualization). Learn to make quick sketches of views or ideas, which is an important part of planning a painting. Useful to illustrate design ideas for architects, interior designers, designers, artists or sculptors. The focus of this class is to sharpen perception of proportions, perspective, light and shadow. Adding color will also be discussed using color markers, colored pencils and watercolor. Field trips included. Prereq: Intro to Drawing or similar experience. Members $210 • Non-Members $230

PD230 Landscape Painting

Instructor: Kathy Chenet Saturday, 1:00-4:00 p.m. 6 weeks Studio 1A Paint landscapes in the studio from photographs as well as paint outdoors, on-site. Learn to use a limited palette to mix colors for the landscape, composition, linear and aerial perspective to create depth in your paintings, and how to combine these skills to paint light and shadow. Oil paint is preferred but all painting media are acceptable. Prereq: Experience in chosen medium. Members $230 • Non-Members $250

PD242 Advanced Painting Oil or Acrylic

Using either oils or acrylics students will concentrate on drawing, value and color to develop their paintings, with an emphasis placed on achieving a likeness. Tuition includes model fees. Instructor: Riku Hulkkonen Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Heritage Center Learn to complete digital captures and transform portrait images into compelling statements of creative style. Learn corrective retouching techniques and style effects that can be applied to the face and body as well as to an entire scene. Students will learn through class discussions, hands on work in class and homework assignments. Students must have access to Adobe Photoshop, understanding of layers and tools. Experience in making portraits with a digital camera using RAW file format recommended. A 4 GB thumb drive or another electronic storage device is suggested. Prereq: Basic Photoshop or similar exp. PH364 Location Portrait Photography

Instructor: Riku Hulkkonen Thursday, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Studio 5 Learn to create compelling portraits in various environments utilizing natural light, strobes, continuous light sources as well as reflectors and other light shaping tools. We’ll work together as a team with real people as models in real situations and learn how to systematically plan the photo session and work with the model. Prereq: Basic Portraiture or similar exp. Instructor: Jon Manchester Wednesday, 7:00–9:00 p.m. Heritage Center Using lightroom and Photoshop (Standard or Elements) students will learn the fundamentals of image processing with two of today’s most popular image processing tools. Two basic image enhancement workflows will be covered. The first workflow will combine the best features of Lightroom and Photoshop, the second workflow will be a Photoshop only workflow. Other topics will include: creating and maintaining an image archive, effective use of metadata, preparing images for online publishing, and preparing images for printing. Prereq: Digital Photo I. with Stacy Barter, in Studio 1A. Learn to paint figurative subjects by exploring how color, and warm and cool temperatures affect flesh tones. Emphasis is placed on finding accuracy, while bravely leaving fresh and expressive passages consisting of lost edges and merging values. This will be an energetic, fun experience, providing plenty of guidance and one-on-one instruction. We will be working from the nude, draped and clothed figure, doing short studies in oil and building up to longer three-hour model sessions. #WKP17. Different types of exhibition venues will be explored along with how to approach those venues. Weekend Painting Workshop Expressive Figure in Oil

These courses offer students the opportunity for in-depth exploration of various photographic topics and themes, applicable to digital or film, color or black and white photography.

Photography Workshop Wedding Photography

With Patrick Van Dusen Saturday, August 3, 2013, 9:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m. Students will learn what it takes to start and operate a wedding photography business. Patrick will take students through the concepts of finding customers, working with them, preparing for the wedding, shooting the wedding, making the final product and selling reprints. Introduction to Digital Photography: 3 Hour Workshops $35 each Workshop Instructors Rick Lang, Frank Mardle, Jon Manchester Designed to educate students about their specific cameras, these weekly workshops provide an overview of menus and usage for better control of your photographs. Some in this series feature information about different genres such as travel and people photography, others focus on computer software and working with digital images. Withdrawal and Refund Policy • Refunds must be requested by noon the day before the first class. A refund will be issued less a $15 processing fee. • Refund requests made after the start of the first class will not be honored; see below for credits. • Withdrawal from class for credit must be requested before start of the second class. A class credit will be issued if requested no later than 24 hours prior to the start of the second class. Class credits are good for the two terms immediately following the original term. • Refund for workshops is full tuition less processing fee. No refunds will be made after the registration deadline. • Class transfers must also be completed no later than 24 hours prior to the start of the second class. Transfers after the first class but before the second class will be assessed a processing fee based on member or non-member status. Transfers, refunds and credits are not available after the second class. These policies apply regardless of attendance status.
