Did you know that clay can be musical? PreColumbian artists created single and multichambered vessels with hidden whistles able to warble, shriek, and trill. But by modern times these pieces sat mute in museums and private collections across the world, curators unaware they could sing. In 1972, a man purchased a Peruvian bottle at auction and on impulse blew into it, reawakening its long-forgotten voice. Soon the news spread that these silent vessels were actually musical instruments. From simple whistles to complex forms, each of our clay projects this summer will vocalize, celebrating this discovery. Let our cacophony of clay begin!!

Skill: All
Studio 1B
In this fun yet focused workshop, students create collages with “found papers” — vintage and contemporary book pages, sheet music, letters, tickets, maps, photos and more. In addition to the large selection of papers Linda provides, students bring personal found papers for the subject they’ve chosen. The workshop starts with a brief overview of the history of collage, basic composition and color-theory principles, styles/approaches, and a demo of collage techniques from gluing to mark-making. Spend the bulk of the day creating collages from prep to a finished take-home piece. Short break for lunch.
