WELCOME TO CREALDÉ SCHOOL OF ART OUR TWO OTHER LOCATIONS Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center

Hannibal Square Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 W. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. The galleries are open noon–4 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday, noon–5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday. Phone 407-539-2680. Admission is free.

Since 2010, Crealdé has partnered with the City of Winter Garden to offer a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children at the Jessie Brock Community Center, which serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site.

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops in Painting & Drawing, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year, plus Summer ArtCamp. Crealdé School of Art In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Florida. The two galleries 2017-18 CREALDÉ SESSIONS on the main campus present a changing variety of Fall I: Aug. 28–Oct. 29 multidisciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Fall II: Oct. 30–Jan. 21, 2018 Florida, the nation and the world. The Contemporary Winter: Jan. 22–March 25, 2018 Sculpture Garden overlooking Lake Sterling features Spring: March 26–June 10, 2018 more than 60 pieces of original art. September 15 – January 16, 2018 Emerge: New Works by Painting & Drawing Fellowship and Studio Artists

Emerging artists from the Crealdé Painting & Drawing program share their talent in work produced during their fellowships. The Crealdé Fellowship Program, since 1978, and the Studio Artist Program, since 1996, have mentored an average of 25 students per year through this work-study exchange. This exhibition is curated by Barbara Tiffany, Curator of Exhibitions. Join us for the opening reception on the main campus from 7-9 p.m. Friday, September 29.

Funded by artist Cheryl Bogdanowitsch, this special program provides an annual $1,000 scholarship for Crealdé classes, workshops and studio use to an adult sculpture student. Contact David Cumbie, Sculpture Program Manager, for information and an application, dlcumbie@gmail.com.

In collaboration with the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, Crealdé School of Art offers a contemporary and historic window into the culture and landscape of Central Florida’s Lake Apopka. A team of professional documentary photographers and plein air painters produced for exhibition 40 black-and-white archival photographs, oral histories of places and people, and a series of 10 plein air paintings. The evening begins with a 7 pm reception at the Jenkins Gallery, including a gallery talk at 8 pm and continuing from 8:30 to 10 pm at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center with live music.

This newest phase of Heritage Collection photographs and stories celebrates ten women and men born or raised in Hannibal Square who became nationally known in their fields. Among others, the exhibition explores the lives of Tuskegee Airman Richard Hall, Orange County Public School Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins, and nationally celebrated Gospel singers and educators Horace and James Boyer. The exhibition is curated by Hannibal Square historians Fairolyn Livingston and Mary Daniels.

FA101 Introduction Quilting Piecing and Patchwork

Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Fall I Monday, 10 am-1 pm, Heritage Center, 6 Weeks Always wanted to quilt, but didn’t know how to get started? In this beginner class, students learn the basic steps of quilting. The class covers fabric choices, quilting supplies, rotary cutting and more. Participants learn the art of piecing patchwork blocks and matching points during this six-week course. Ends October 9. Members $250 • Non-members $270

Instructor: Hye Shin Fall I/fall ii Tuesday, 10 am-Noon, Heritage Center Create unique flower designs on fabric. Using traditional quilting, piecing, and basic sewing, learn to add a visual language to your fabric piece using scraps, applique, threads, and beads. Embellishments will be used to create unique floral designs. Class is for all levels, some sewing skills needed. Sewing machine is preferred for faster progress. Supply list available. FA105 The Art of Papermaking

Instructor: Hye Shin fall ii Wednesday, 10 am-Noon, Studio 7 Learn the basics of papermaking using recycled paper, rose petals, onion skins, sewing scraps, and junk mail. Use mold and deckle techniques to make unique paper. Molding, paper sculpture and basic bookbinding techniques will be taught. Make your own cards, envelopes, 2-D and 3-D paper art. FA106 Introduction to Papier Mâché

Instructor: Geoffry Sprague fall i Tuesday, 1-3 pm, Studio 7 Papier-mâché has been used for millennia to create ornamental and functional objects. Explore various materials, recipes and techniques for making and finishing papier-mâché sculpture with emphasis given to the advantages and quirks of the medium. Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Fall II Monday, 10 am-1 pm, Heritage Center, 6 Weeks Discover how to do fusible machine appliqué. Learn a unique and fun technique for fusible machine appliqué, which will be used to create a beautiful wall quilt. Learn to select the right fabrics, prepare the background and appliqué pieces, fuse the raw edge appliqué and finish the quilt. Appliqué has wonderful possibilities for clothes, quilts and home decor items. Members $250 • Non-members $270

WKF05 Contemporary Papermaking with Hanji

Instructor: Hye Shin Fall II Saturday, November 11, 10 am-5 pm, Studio 7 Withdrawal deadline is one week prior to workshop. Experience the spirit of Korean culture by learning the history and techniques of Hanji, a traditional Korean paper made from the paper mulberry tree. Hanji is known for its long and strong fibers and has a variety of applications such as books, artwork and clothes. Learn to create thin mulberry papers and 3-D art forms. Each student will make a standard sheet of Hanji using double-molding and papers with inclusions. Most materials provided. Students should bring towel and inclusions such as onion skin, flower petals, dried fern leaves, gold and silver sprinkles. Mold and deckle ($20) for purchase. Members $125 • Non-members $145

WKF09 Coptic Book Binding

Instructor: Hye Shin Fall I Saturday, September 23, 10 am-4 pm, Studio 7 Withdrawal deadline is one week prior to workshop. The course will cover the texture study to transform abandoned materials into a functional book, as well as covering tips on craftsmanship and production. Coptic Stitching is the most popular form of book binding in these days. Coptic Stitching is one of the easier forms of stitched bindings, making it a great way to start learning, and it is one of the most intriguing with an exposed spine and intricate, visible stitching pattern. Students will learn to create a one of a kind Coptic Stitch Book. Supplies included. Members $130 • Non-members $150

Hye Shin, Hanji papermaking

Hye Shin has taught fiber arts at Crealdé since 2003.She received her BFA and MFA in Fiber Arts from Ewha Womans University, South Korea, and an additional MFA in textiles from The Henty Rodford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University. She recently completed public art pieces for the Historic Sanford Welcome Center and Florida Institute of Technology. Shin participates in group and solo exhibitions internationally. WKF01 Introductory Long Arm Quilting Workshop

Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Fall I Saturday, September 23, 11 am-5 pm, Heritage Center Withdrawal deadline is one week prior to workshop. In this demonstration and hands-on workshop, students learn the basics of longarm quilting, including how to put the backing, batting and top onto the quilting machine. Participants also learn to stitch in the ditch, and meandering and simple free motion patterns. Members $100 • Non-members $120 After working more than 25 years in social service, Sherry GoodeCarmell opened a home-based sewing and quilting studio and has been teaching all areas of sewing and quilting, as well as being a longarm quilter for more than six years. She has made many dozens of quilts and longarmed even more. Commissions include the Seminole County Centennial Celebration. She was the chairperson for the Geneva Quilt Festival and is a member of many sewing and quilt guilds.

WKJ01 Traditional Bezel Stone Setting

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Fall iI Wednesday, 3‐7 pm, Studio 6, 4 Weeks Every participant will explore the craft in-depth in four meetings for a total of 16 hours. Students will learn the bas‐relief technique with demonstrations and hands‐on assistance to practice the process. They will discover the ancient art of repoussé using handmade tools, hammers, punches and the pitch, and working the metal directly (without molds) to create relief sculptures in copper or silver. As repoussé is used for sculptural jewelry and metalsmithing, it has endless possibilities for wall relief murals, mirrors and more. Members $215 • Non-members $235

JG102 Art of Stained Glass

Instructor: Robert Lennox Fall I/fall ii Wednesday, 1-3 pm, Studio 7, 6 Weeks Wednesday, 7-9 pm, Studio 7, 6 Weeks This is a class for beginners to learn the beautiful craft of stained glass. Students are introduced to glass cutting, pattern making, copper foiling and soldering techniques. No prior stained glass experience necessary. All levels welcome. Supplies included. JG103 Intro to Jewelry Design and Fabrication

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Fall I Monday, 6-9 pm, Studio 7, 6 Weeks This is an introductory class for basic and advanced jewelry fabrication. Learn essential silversmithing skills and methods of cutting, forging, embossing and all the fundamentals of soldering techniques. Class includes tools to make finger rings, earrings, bracelets and other forms of jewelry as well as copper materials for practicing during class. Learn how to fabricate round and oval shaped precision bezels for jewelry. Through instructor-led demonstrations and step-by-step instructions, each participant will create a traditional bezel and permanent setting for a cabochon stone. Materials provided. Fahan Sky McDonagh is an Irish American raised in Melbourne Beach, Florida. She creates glass sculpture and jewelry inspired by experiences in nature. Central themes in her work are time and place often presented in a scientific manner. Fahan holds an MFA in glass sculpture from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BA in painting from University of Central Florida. Devoted to the art of sculpture, Cumbie is a one-man institution at Crealdé School of Art, where he joined the faculty in 1980. He directs the sculpture program, teaches classes and workshops to adults and youth, including mold-making, clay sculpture and bronze casting. Cumbie also is an Assistant Professor of Art Sculpture at Valencia College. He manages the Crealdé on-site bronze foundry. For more than 20 years, Cumbie has curated the lakeside sculpture garden, which has more than 60 pieces created in Central Florida. He studied sculpture in North Carolina at Brevard College and the University of North Carolina. WKPH54 Florida Backroads Series: Photograph Historic Cedar Key in Classic Black-and-White Film

Explore hidden architectural and cultural treasures in the historic fishing village of Cedar Key, located on the Gulf of Mexico. Interiors have traditionally involved domestic spaces, such as kitchens, living rooms, studios and bedrooms associated with privacy and intimacy, emotion and memory. Participants will learn to draw and paint both from direct observation and from their imagination. They will learn to capture a room’s shapes, light and dark areas, as well as depict the human living that takes place in a room. The workshop is about perceptual painting, not architectural accuracy.
