Welcome to Crealdé School of Art OUR TWO OTHER LOCATIONS
Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.
Hannibal Square Heritage Center
Hannibal Square Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 W. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. The galleries are open noon–4 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday, noon–5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday. Phone 407-539-2680. Admission is free. Since 2010, Crealdé has partnered with the City of Winter Garden to offer a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children at the Jessie Brock Community Center, which serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site.
Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops in Painting & Drawing, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year, plus Summer ArtCamp. In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Crealdé School of Art Florida. The two galleries on the main campus present a 2018 CREALDÉ SESSIONS changing variety of multidisciplinary visual art exhibitions Winter: Jan. 22–March 25, 2018 by artists from Florida, the nation and the world. The Contemporary Sculpture Garden overlooking Lake Sterling Spring: March 26–June 10, 2018 features more than 60 pieces of original art. Admission to Summer Art Camp: June 4 – July 27, 2018 the galleries and gardens is always free. EXHIBITIONS & ANNOUNCEMENTS ALICE & WILLIAM JENKINS GALLERY Recognizing established artists from Florida, the nation and beyond
February 2 to May 19, 2018 Honoring Two Winter Park Legends: The Paintings of Hugh McKean and Jeannette Genius McKean Crealdé proudly presents a major educational exhibition of paintings created by Hugh McKean (1908-1995) and Jeannette Genius McKean (1909-1989) on loan from The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park. The philanthropic work of the two local legends is well known and their Morse Museum is a permanent reminder of the couple’s grand legacy, but this two-gallery exhibition reveals their more private accomplishments as formally trained artists. Opening reception is February 2, it begins at the Jenkins Gallery, including a gallery talk at 8 pm and continuing from 8 to 10 pm at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center with live jazz music. *Reservations are being accepted for guided tours of both galleries, call 407.671.1886.

Winter Garden City Hall Art in Public Spaces Gallery, Heller Hall at the Winter Garden History Research and Education Center, Orange County Library–Winter Garden Branch In collaboration with the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, Crealdé School of Art offers a contemporary and historic window into the culture and landscape of Central Florida’s Lake Apopka. A team of professional documentary photographers and plein air painters produced for exhibition 45 black-and-white archival photographs, oral histories of places and people, and a series of 10 plein air paintings. Opening event from 5-8 pm, Thursday, January 25.

This exhibition, organized by Crealdé Curator of Exhibitions Barbara Tiffany, features the recent work of artists from Crealdé’s diverse faculty. This year’s list: Sherry Goode-Carmell - Fiber Arts, Peter Schreyer - Photography, Milton Heiberg - Photography, Marie Orban - Drawing, Stacy Barter - Painting, Robert Ross - Painting, Don Sondag - Painting, and Barbara Bailey - Ceramics. The opening reception will be held in conjunction with the annual Night of Fire, Crealdé’s winter open house, from 5-8 pm Saturday, January 20. May 11 to July 28, 2018 Symbiotic Dance: Marianna Hamilton-Ross
Various aqueous painting media allow Marianna Hamilton Ross to explore the interdependence of Man and Nature. Florida’s gardens and native habitats combine with human figures to depict both protective and turbulent relationships. The exhibition is curated by Barbara Tiffany, Crealdé’s Curator of Exhibitions. January 12, 2018 to February 19, 2018 Epcot’s 2nd Annual International Festival of the Arts
A Celebration of Young Artists. Epcot’s 2nd Annual Festival of the Arts will include participation from local arts organizations. Crealdé’s Young Artists have been invited to participate in a special exhibit celebrating creativity and imagination in the spirit of Walt Disney. This exciting exhibition will include works created by youth 4 -17 in a variety of media, including both 2-D and 3-D. Opening January 12, in Innoventions Plaza, this exhibit will be on display through February 19, 2018. Also, Crealdé’s traveling exhibit Storytellers XVII: West of the East Coast Tracks will be showing at Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts. In additon, Crealdé will offer workshops and seminars taught by our professional artist faculty as part of the 2nd Annual Festival of the Arts.

In collaboration with the City of Winter Park’s 16th annual Unity Heritage Festival, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center will open its doors to present The Lake: A Documentary Exploring the People and Land of Lake Apopka. Join city officials at 10 am on Monday for a special Martin Luther King, Jr., symbolic program. Activities will continue throughout the day including food and music. *The main campus front office and galleries will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Day and will reopen at 9 am Tuesday.
Saturday, January 20 from 5-8 pm Night of Fire and Director’s Choice Opening
The whole campus comes alive after dark for the 8th Annual Night of Fire. Tour the Crealdé studios and galleries, participate in art workshops and demonstrations including torch cutting, a gas kiln firing, raku firing and a light painting photography display over Lake Sterling. There will be painting demonstrations in the studios, too. Enjoy live music, refreshments and storytelling around the fire, and tour the Director’s Choice XII faculty art exhibition.

David Hunter, Associate Faculty in Painting & Drawing, an accomplished and awarded printmaker, says he inherited his father’s talent for artwork, but earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in zoology at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He worked in research and taught middle-school science, before returning to art in his spare time and entering his first show. In 1978, he dedicated himself as a full-time artist. Hunter teaches printmaking and acrylic painting to adults and youth at Crealdé School of Art, having joined the faculty in 2007. He was instrumental in forming the Florida Printmakers society in 1986, becoming its first president. Hunter’s work appears in galleries and collections in the United States and England, and he participates in art shows and competitions. Hunter is a member of the Miniature Art Society of Florida, the Miniature Painter, Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington, D.C. and a signature member of the Miniature Artists of America.

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres SPRING Monday, 6-9 pm, 6 weeks, Studio 7 This is an introductory class for basic and advanced jewelry fabrication. Learn essential silversmithing skills and methods of cutting, forging, embossing and all the fundamentals of soldering techniques. The class includes tools to make finger rings, earrings, bracelets and other forms of jewelry as well as copper materials for practicing during class. Instructor: Stefan Alexandres WINTER Wednesday, 3‐7 pm, 4 weeks, Studio 6, Starts February 21 Every participant will explore the craft in-depth in four meetings for a total of 16 hours. Students will learn the bas‐relief technique with demonstrations and hands‐on assistance to practice the process. They will discover the ancient art of repoussé using handmade tools, hammers, punches and the pitch, and working the metal directly (without molds) to create relief sculptures in copper or silver. As repousse is used for sculptural jewelry and metalsmithing, it has endless design possibilities for wall relief murals, mirrors and more. Members $225 • Non-members $245

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres WINTER Sunday, March 18, 10 am-3 pm, Studio 7 Withdrawal deadline is one week prior to start date Learn how to fabricate round and oval shaped precision bezels for jewelry. Through instructor-led demonstrations and step-by-step instructions, each participant will create a traditional bezel and permanent setting for a cabochon stone. Materials are provided and tools are available during class. Members $105 • Non-members $125 Stefan Alexandres creates artwork using ancient techniques – no molds or stamps, just hand tools. From 1964 to 1972 he apprenticed in metal arts in the traditional ways, as guided through the organized guilds of Greece. Instructor: Stefan Alexandres WINTER Sunday, March 18, 3:30-8:30 pm, Studio 7 Withdrawal deadline is one week prior to start date Learn to fabricate irregular-shaped bezels to match odd-shaped stones for jewelry, as well as the process of permanently setting stone to the bezel. This precision stone-setting technique is applicable for any raw-shaped stones, crystals, or other materials like seashells, glass pieces, or liquid resin. WKJ33 Make Vintage Silverware Jewelry
Instructors: Jan & Keith Stephens Sunday, January 28, Noon–5 pm, Studio 7 WINTER Sunday, April 29, Noon–5 pm, Studio 7 SPRING Withdrawal deadline is one week prior to start date Learn the art of repurposing beautiful vintage silverware into wearable art. Design and construct bracelets, rings, earrings, or pendants from beautiful vintage forks, spoons, knives, butter knives, and other unique serving pieces. Learn a variety of techniques including how to bend, polish buff, set stones, textured metal, stamp, patina, make cold connections and do simple wire work. Plan on making 2-3 pieces during the workshop. Tuition includes a $45 kit for each student including the proper vintage silverware, wire, cabochons, beads, vintage costume jewelry pieces, findings, and consumables. She has been featured in several magazines including Southern Distinction, Step-By-Step Wire Jewelry and Bead and Button magazines. She retired with a thirty-six-year career as a professional educator and refined trainer, and now melds her teaching expertise, intuition, and distinctive design talents to provide an optimum training environment to grow beginning or intermediate students into advanced creators of wire and reclaimed silverware jewelry. Her classes are an entertaining and educational experience where students take wire wrapping, forming and design skills as well as beautiful creations with them at the end of each course. Create raised designs by pushing and shaping malleable metal. The work can be used to create sculptures, jewelry, sculptural components used in mixed media art, or tiles using copper foils. Instructor: Stefan Alexandres WINTER Monday, 3-7 pm, 4 weeks, Foundry Explore unconventional materials such as light bulbs, old tools, toys, photographs, and other found objects and assemble by incorporating rivets, wires, screws, staples, nails, thread, glue and plastic ties. Sandro Pelicié Pérez combines his skills in sculpture, scenic art, and decorative concrete to create themed outdoor living spaces. He received his BA in sculpture in 1997 from Academie National des Bellas Arte San Alejandro, Havana, Cuba. His work has been exhibited internationally and in public and private collections.
David Lee Cumbie, Sculpture Studio Manager; Senior Faculty, Sculpture; and Curator, Contemporary Sculpture Garden. Devoted to the art of sculpture, Cumbie is a one-man institution at Crealdé School of Art, where he joined the joined the faculty in 1980. He directs the sculpture program, teaches classes and workshops to adults and youth, including mold-making, clay sculpture, bronze casting and independent study. Cumbie also is an Assistant Professor of Art Sculpture at Valencia College. He manages the Crealdé on-site bronze foundry, which is the only such community-based facility in Central Florida. For more than 20 years, Cumbie has curated the lakeside sculpture garden, which is home to more than 60 pieces that represent art work created in Central Florida. He studied art with a concentration in sculpture at in his home state of North Carolina at Brevard College and the University of North Carolina. His work has been commissioned for inclusion in public and private collections in the United States and Europe.

Using Mitch’s “broomstick” method of making pots, color and textures are introduced before the pot is fully formed, so that there is a natural bond with the surface while the pot is being built. Mitch feels this way of working comes close to the way nature forms its magic. Uncomplicated, simple techniques are demonstrated that give very sophisticated results. A revered artist and educator with 50 years of experience as a professional potter, Vincent Sansone joined the Crealdé faculty in the early 1970s and is the longstanding Ceramics Studio and Program Manager. Sansone also teaches at Valencia College, where he is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics Art. Sansone was awarded his MFA in Ceramics and his BFA in Painting at Southern Illinois University, and he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. His whimsical creations have been exhibited throughout the United States as well as internationally, and are held in numerous private and public collections. He conducts workshops throughout the Southeast, and regularly exhibits in galleries and art festivals. He continues to receive awards and recognitions, and serves as a judge at local and regional art exhibitions.

In 2015, the instructor directed the St. Augustine at 450 documentary photography project, which became an official exhibition of the city’s celebration year. He has received a wide range of public art commissions, research grants and recognition awards for his black-and-white photography on Florida communities, including a Visual Arts Fellowship from the State of Florida. In 2005-2006, Schreyer was honored with a major retrospective titled Small Stories From A Big Country at the Swiss Camera Museum in Vevey, Switzerland. In 2015, following his solo exhibition at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College, Winter Park, a collection of Schreyer’s Central Florida archival photographs were purchased for the museum’s prestigious Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art.

Since 2010, Crealdé School of Art, in partnership with the City of Winter Garden, has offered a selection of Painting & Drawing, Ceramics and Photography classes for adults and youth at the Jessie Brock Community Center, 310 N.
