Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center

Hannibal Square Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 W. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. The galleries are open noon–4 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday, noon–5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday. Phone 407-539-2680.

Since 2010, Crealdé has partnered with the City of Winter Garden to offer a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children at the Jessie Brock Community Center, which serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site.

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops in Painting & Drawing, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year, plus Summer ArtCamp.

In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Florida. The two galleries on the main campus present a changing variety of multidisciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation and the world. The Contemporary Sculpture Garden overlooking Lake Sterling features more than 60 pieces of original art. Admission to the galleries and gardens is always free.

Hand in Hand: The Creative Works of Janvier Miller and Gustaf Miller January 12 – April 27 Opening reception: Saturday, January 12, during the Annual Night of Fire Event, 5 – 8 pm Showalter Hughes Community Gallery

This artistic duo met at Syracuse University and then studied in Rome, Italy, each with a lifelong love of creating works of art. The exhibition will feature their most recent paintings, sculpture, and ceramics. Sharing a home studio in Vero Beach, Florida, or Stonington, Connecticut, Janvier and Gustaf support each other’s efforts through collaboration, critiques, and problem solving and exhibit annually at over 12 locations along the Eastern Seaboard. Featured artists are Juan Nieves-Burgos, Alejandro de Jesús, José Feliciano, Ivonne Galanes Svärd, Yasir Nieves, Angel Rivera-Morales, Rafael Rivera-Rosa, Martín García Rivera, Carmelo Fontanez-Cortijo, Pablo Rubio and Domingo García. Andrew M. Grant: Elements February 1 – April 6, Hannibal Square Heritage Center Opening reception - Friday, February 15, 7 – 9 pm

Andrew M. Grant is a Jamaican-born, Orlando based representational artist who specializes in figurative drawing and paintings in oil. Andrew received his formal art education at Crealdé School of Art where he became a Fellowship Artist and further developed his artistic skills and vision under former Painting & Drawing Director Terry Norris and assisted in a wide range of Crealdé’s community projects. In 2010-11 he studied privately with Carol Broman, and has since diligently honed his skills. His subject matter is primarily centered on depicting the nobility of the female form as women “have been the most consistent force in his life. He finds that “representing women, especially black women, acts as a homage he is paying for the nurturing, generosity and kindness he has experienced all his life.” The exhibition is curated

by Barbara Tiffany.

The Sage Project Phase 2: Hannibal Square Elders Tell Their Stories April 12 – August 31 Opening reception - Friday, April 12, 7 – 9 pm, Hannibal Square Heritage Center Panel discussion - Saturday, April 13, 2 – 4 pm, Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church

This is the second phase of an important Heritage Center documentary to preserve and understand local history from the perspective of a select group of the oldest residents in Winter Park’s historic African American community. The group of elders consists of current residents, ages 80 to over a 100, who have had a lifelong relationship with the historic Hannibal Square community. Since the project’s inception in 2012, more than half of the participating elders in the first phase have passed away, but their legacy and contributions will last forever through the collection at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, reaching local residents and visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

Through the art of documentary photography by Heritage Center founder Peter Schreyer, and oral histories collected by the center’s chief historian Fairolyn Livingston, the memories and stories of elders from one of the nation’s oldest African-American townships will become an exhibition at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. During the exhibition, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center will host a Juneteenth Celebration at the Winter Park Community Center, date TBA.

Emerge: New Works by Paintind and Drawing Fellowship and Studio Artists May 10 – August 3 Opening reception - Friday, May 10, 7 – 9 pm Showalter Hughes Community Gallery

Emerging artists from the Crealdé Painting and Drawing program share their talent in work produced during their fellowships. The Crealdé Fellowship Program, since 1978, and the Studio Artist Program, since 1996, has mentored an average of 25 students per year through this work-study exchange. The exhibition is curated by Barbara Tiffany.

The whole campus comes alive after dark for the 8th Annual Night of Fire. Tour the Crealdé studios and galleries, participate in art workshops and demonstrations including a gas kiln firing, torch-cut welding, Raku firing and a light painting photography display over Lake Sterling. There will be painting demonstrations in the studios, too. Enjoy live music, refreshments and storytelling around the fire, and tour the opening exhibit. Suggested donation of $5.

Eighth Annual Free Family Festival March 9, 2019 • 10 am – 2pm

Crealdé’s popular open house is a day of free fun, art, and play on Crealdé School of Art’s lakeside campus. Children enjoy pony rides, face painting, and bounce house fun and can choose from a wide selection of hands-on art workshops, including plein-air pastel painting in the garden, darkroom photography, clay animal sculpting, and printmaking. Families have the opportunity to see all the studios, meet Crealdé’s professional art faculty, and register for Summer ArtCamp sessions at a significant discount.

In this class, students will become familiar with essential silversmithing skills and methods of cutting, forging, embossing and all the fundamentals of soldering techniques. Students will be given the instruction and tools to make finger rings, earrings, bracelets and other forms of jewelry. Copper copper materials will be provided for use in class. A resumé for an artist is different from other types. You need to convey relevant descriptions of exhibits, grants, training, background, and awards (if any). In this workshop award-winning writer Elaine Person will help you choose the important points of your creative life and how to avoid unnecessary information. Each student will leave this workshop with a professional and current artist resumé.

Instructors: Elaine Person Winter: Saturday, March 23, 10 am – 3 pm, Heritage Center Your art speaks volumes, but you are asked to write an artist’s statement and biography along with your work. This workshop will help you to learn how to write descriptions and thoughts about your art and discuss the best way to share your intentions.

Learn the written tools of metaphors, similes, and other techniques to clarify your experiences and intentions as they relate to your work. Boost sales by making the art lover feel more connected to you. Award-winning writer Elaine Person guides you through this workshop as you not only learn how to capture a statement in words, but how to speak and represent yourself at art openings, in interviews, and for grants and proposals. We will discuss how to write and then actually write and present in this workshop. You will receive helpful, positive critique. JG102 Art of Stained Glass I

Instructor: Fahan Sky McDonagh Spring: Sunday, April 7, 10 am – 2 pm, Studio 7 Transform natural objects such as petals, leaves, and small flowers into wearable works of art. In this one-day workshop, students will learn basic jewelry design and fabrication skills, using glass cutting, torch work, and soldering to produce a handmade, personalized piece of jewelry. Skills learned will allow students to independently pursue further jewelry design projects. No experience necessary.

WKJ05 Odd-Shaped Bezel Stone Setting

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Winter: Sunday, January 13, 12 – 5 pm, Studio 7 This workshop is specially designed for the fabrication of irregularshaped bezels to match odd-shaped stones for jewelry, as well as the process of permanently setting stone to the bezel. This precision stone-setting technique is applicable for any raw-shaped stones, crystals, or other materials like seashells, glass pieces, or liquid resin. WKJ36 Fused Glass 101: Kiln-Formed Glass

Instructor: Robert Lennox Winter: Saturday, January 12, 10 am – 2 pm, Studio 7 Winter: Saturday, March 23, 10 am – 2 pm, Studio 7 Enter the cutting-edge world of fused glass! In this half-day workshop, students learn studio glass techniques including cutting, fusing, annealing, slumping and more. Safety in the studio will also be covered. A portable computer-controlled kiln engineered for glass is provided so that students may gain experience loading and firing a kiln. Students will design and fabricate two pieces: a jewelry pendant to wear, and a fused glass suncatcher. Beginners will gain a variety of new studio skills while more advanced students with stained glass experience will learn how to break free of lead lines!

Students will use the hammer to forge hot steel on the anvil and learn how to make door handles, hooks, and ornamental scrolls. Practice techniques such as flattening, upsetting, twisting, punching, drawing and familiarity with the blacksmith forge. All materials included.

Explore a variety of techniques such as forging the blades, shaping, heat treatment, sharpening, riveting, polishing, and handle making techniques. All materials included. WKS5 Bronze Casting Workshop

Instructor: David Cumbie Spring: Saturday – Sunday, March 30 & 31, 10 am – 4 pm, and Saturday, April 6, 1 – 5 pm, Studio 6 David will introduce students to a variety of techniques in the creation of wax sculptures. Once the wax sculpture are made each student will prepare their waxes with gates and sprues in preparation for the ceramic mold making process. Waxes will be coated with state of the art ceramic shell then the wax will be burned out and the molten bronze will be poured into the molds. The cost includes a five pound bronze sculpture. *Additional fees will be charged for large works.

WKS03 Concrete Sculpture Two-Day Workshop

Instructor: Sandro Pelicié Perez Foundry Winter: Saturday & Sunday, February 23 & 24, 9 am – 4 pm Spring: Saturday & Sunday, March 30 & 31, 9 am – 4 pm Through an interactive and collaborative learning process, students will create a concrete sculpture with a durable surface for outdoor art. The process is begun by carving the initial form into a large piece of Styrofoam, using a small maquette as a reference. Students will then apply cement directly to the surface of the form. The artwork will be finished using colorful stains and sealers. This collaborative piece will go on display in Crealdé’s Contemporary Sculpture Garden.

Instructor: David Cumbie 8 Weeks Spring: Mondays, 10 – 12 pm, Studio 6 Spring: Mondays, 7 – 9 pm, Studio 6 Students will create wax sculptures that will be cast in bronze. Each student will learn how to prepare the wax form for casting and learn the ceramic shell mold making process. David will be using the latest mold making materials available and students will be able to witness a bronze pour at the end of the class. The cost includes the casting of one five pound bronze. Explore various materials, recipes, and techniques for making and finishing papier-mâché sculpture with emphasis given to the advantages and quirks of the medium. TD135 Beginning Handbuilding

Instructor: Doug Bringle 8 Weeks Winter & Spring: Tuesdays, 1:30 PM - 3:30 pm, Studio 4 Don’t be intimidated by clay. This class gives you the chance to handbuild freely. Gregg Kreutz is an award-winning oil painter, poet and playwright based in New York City. He teaches at the Art Students League as well as workshops held nationally and internationally. He is the author of two very successful books, Problem Solving for Oil Painters and Oil Painting Essentials. Gregg has been drawing and painting all of his life. After graduating from N.Y.U., he pursued his training as a painter in earnest at the Art Student’s League, winning a merit scholarship. CREALDÉ LAB & DARKROOM

Digital Printing Lab & Finishing Area

Weds. 6-9 pm; Friday, 9am-1 pm; Sat. 1-5 pm The Digital Printing Lab features an Epson archival pigmented ink printer and one computer workstation with Photoshop, plus two workstations equipped for laptops. The finishing area has a large mat cutter and space to frame photographs.

Bring printing paper, mat boards and frames, as needed. The lab is available at no charge for students who complete the Digital Printing Lab Workshop or equivalent training. Crealdé membership is required.

Crealdé Darkroom Rental

Weds. 6-9 pm; Friday, 9am-4 pm; Sat. 1-5 pm Members $70 for 8-week session The renovated darkroom on the main campus features 10 separate enlarging stations, which accommodate 35mm to 4x5-inch format film, plus a separate film processing area.

Since 2010, Crealdé School of Art, in partnership with the City of Winter Garden, has offered a selection of Painting & Drawing, Ceramics and Photography classes for adults and youth at the Jessie Brock Community Center, 310 N.
