Cynthia Slaughter, Documentary Photographer: On Love And Loss 6ft. September 1-January 18, 2021 Free Opening Reception: Friday, Sept. 18, 7-9pm Hannibal Square Heritage Center Upstairs Visiting Exhibition Gallery
In a day and age when news of tragedies and dramatic events are consumed by the next news sound bite, the power of still documentary photographs allows the public to slow down and enter more deeply into the lives of those affected by these events. In this series of moving black and white photographs, Cynthia Slaughter shares a deeply intimate documentary on her 94-year-old mother, Edna Pearl Butler, a retired farmworker in the celery fields of Sanford, Florida, where she has been a resident since 1950. Her images chronicle her current life of devoted service to her faith, her family, and her local community. Additionally, Slaughter invites viewers into her home in Orlando’s Orlovista neighborhood in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Slaughter tells the visual story of her life after 35 years of memories were wiped away and her home was deemed unlivable by FEMA. Cynthia Slaughter is a Studio Artist in documentary photography at Crealdé School of Art where she has studied since 2010 and participated in Crealdé documentaries including St. Augustine at 450 and The Lake : A Documentary Exploring the Land and People of Lake Apopka. She is mentored by documentary photographer and senior faculty member Peter Schreyer.

As the result of a Crealdé commission and a collaborative community project, Alberto Gómez created a social justice themed mural for the Hope CommUnity Center in Apopka in 2006. Crealdé has commissioned the artist to create a large three-panel mural on the history of immigration in the United States, which will debut during this exhibition and will be shown at the two-day Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs’ FusionFest, Nov. 28 & 29, 2020.

WKPD100
Instructor: Andrew Grant FALL II: Saturday & Sunday, Dec. 12 & 13, 10am‑5pm Location: Studio 1A Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced Over the course of this 2-day workshop, explore a time-honored approach to learning oil painting techniques by attempting a master-copy. From a high resolution reproduction of an oil portrait from the 19th century, students will explore techniques practiced and mastered by these French academicians. A master-copy allows the student to reverse engineer how a painting was made using a logical approach. There will be an emphasis on palette organization and paint application to express the nuances of skin tones from dark to light. We will discuss drawing, underpainting and over-painting techniques through demonstration and practice. Members $200 • Non-members $220

Carmelle, Andrew Grant, Oil
Learn the importance of well-designed spaces and understanding of the poetic language of drawing. Explore techniques in observation and complex compositions to establish a well-designed drawing, which is an important first step in painting a masterpiece. Required supplies: Drawing paper pad, 17 x 14 inches Conte crayons, black or sepia. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Edson Campos has enjoyed sketching and painting since childhood. Completely self-taught, he moved to the United States in 1978 and was quickly recognized for his artwork. An award-winning artist, Edson has exhibited his lifelike paintings and drawings in major cities throughout the country. His pieces have been published in magazines, displayed in art exhibitions and purchased for private collections. Edson has been commissioned to provide the artwork for all 500 rooms in the Queen Mary Hotel in Long Beach, California. In February 2020, he received a Gold Medal at the Historic Grand Palais in Paris.
In this 2-day workshop, students will complete a beautiful, fun portrait of their favorite fur baby! Working from your own photos, you will be guided every step of the way from the drawing stage, to the painting stage, and finishing off with the perfect background. Students will learn how to make a drawing from their photos, painting techniques that include textures and colors for fur, capturing expression and a likeness, being bolder with color, and adding a unique background to tie it all in. Pet portraits also make the perfect gift!
For the safety of all, we are limiting Open Studio to eight participants plus a monitor and model. For more details beginning August 1, please call the Crealdé office at 407-671-1886
Open Studio: Figure Fridays: 1–3:30pm Location: Studio 1A Studio Monitor: Vera Gubnitskaia Andrew Maurice Grant was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and migrated to the U.S. an early age.
Students work in any medium from a live model who holds one pose the entire session.
Grant’s mother always had art in the home. Photography, small figurines, illustrations and painting reproductions which leaned towards realism, representations of blackness and the female form. As Grant got older, the art he lived with over the years, settled on his subconscious and helped influence the way he approaches his own art to this day. Throughout high school and college, Grant continued to hone his technique and had the opportunity to take Art History at the University of Central Florida. When reflecting on those years, he realized he had limited exposure to people producing the type of work and subject matter he now explores exclusively.
Fee: $10/session
Andrew Grant’s work was featured in a popular solo exhibition at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center in 2019.

OPEN STUDIOS————————————
Fortunately, he was able to study with former Crealdé Painting and Drawing Program Manager, Terry Traumbauer Norris and privately with Carol Broman in 2010 and 2011. Grant’s subject matter is centered around women, visually depicting them in the most noble light. His inspiration is women solely, as they have been the most consistent force in his life. Grant finds that representing women, especially black women, acts as a homage he is paying for the nurturing, generosity and kindness he has experienced all of his life.
