EXHIBITIONS Crealdé’s William & Alice Jenkins Gallery
Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit art organization established in 1975, featuring an affordable, sequential curriculum of over 100 studio courses and workshops in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture and related media for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. Also, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to special populations from the diverse Central Florida community. Our two galleries offer changing multidisciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation and the world. Central Florida’s only contemporary sculpture garden showcases over 60 outdoor pieces of art. A limited number of classes are held at the Jessie Brock Community Center in Winter Garden. Crealdé’s main campus is located off Aloma Avenue at 600 St. Andrews Blvd., Winter Park, FL, 32792. The office and galleries are open 9 a.m-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Phone 407-671-1886.
Exploring heritage and folklore through the visual arts and humanities
Continuing through Oct. 17, 2014 34th Annual Juried Student Exhibition This popular exhibition features some of the year’s best student work in painting, drawing, film and digital photography, fiber arts, ceramics and sculpture. The show is juried by the school’s Program Steering Committee and judged by Valencia Community College art professor Nancy Jay.
Continuing through Oct. 25, 2014 Business as Community Life: Winter Park 2013 This documentary project is a collaboration between Crealdé and the Winter Park History Museum. As a reflection of contemporary culture, a cross section of businesses was photographed, creating a historic record for the future. Twelve advanced Crealdé students, under the direction of professional documentary photographers Peter Schreyer and Sherri Bunye, captured 27 businesses, chosen for their historic architecture or long-term presence in the community.
Opening Nov. 7 t hrough Jan. 31, 2015 Visionary Bill Jenkins: Crealdé Founder, Artist and Philanthropist As a kickoff to Crealde’s 40th anniversary, we remember late founder William Sterling Jenkins (1920-1996) in a two-gallery presentation. Trained as an artist in Europe and Mexico in the 1930s, he produced a body of landscape and portrait paintings influenced by the places he traveled to as a young man, and the changing cultural landscape of his native American South. Opening reception Friday, Nov. 7, beginning with a panel discussion from 6-7 p.m., followed by a continued reception with live music at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center from 8:30-10 p.m.

Crealdé’s community annex represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through a unique collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation. Visit and share an inspiring history told by the people who have lived it! Free admission. The Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. Opening Aug. 16 through 30, 2014 32nd Summer ArtCamp Student Exhibition This annual exhibition features a work of art from each of the more than 300 participants, ages 4 to 17. This popular show includes paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, sculptures and photographs. Opening reception 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. Opening Sept. 6 through Jan. 11, 2015 The Art of Fellowship in Photography, Ceramics and Sculpture Emerging artists from the Photography, Ceramics and Sculpture Departments show a diverse palette of artwork. Since 1978, the Crealdé Fellowship Program has mentored hundreds of students through this work-study exchange; many former Fellows have become professional exhibiting artists. Art in Public Places Gallery Winter Garden City Hall
Sharing visual arts with the community Opening Aug. 18 through Nov. 4, 2014 The Last Harvest: A History and Tribute to the Life and Work of the Farmworkers on Lake Apopka This documentary project traces the life of muck farmworkers whose way of life came to an abrupt end in 1998. Under the guidance of Crealdé documentary photographers Faith Amon and Peter Schreyer, youths from farmworker families were trained in the skills of documentary photography and captured the historic last season of muck farming in Central Florida. Opening reception and gallery talk, 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Instructor: Hye Shin Fall I & Fall II Tuesday, 10 a.m.–noon Heritage Center Learn the basics of papermaking using recycled paper, rose petals, onion skins, sewing scraps, junk mail, etc. Students will use mold and deckle techniques to make their own unique paper. The instructor will begin to create landscapes making “crinkles” in selected areas of the paper. By applying washes over these areas, interesting textures result from which a painting can be developed. Both Eastern and Western materials are used in innovative ways to create more expressive paintings. Try your hand at sumi-e brushwork. Create your own art journal – origami-style! Instructor: Dennis Schmalstig Fall I & Fall II Thursday, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Studio 1A Use your skills in drawing and painting realistically to create abstract and semi-abstract works of art. Learn three approaches that allow a more poetic, interpretative response when working from life and nature. Students will use pencil to create ambiguous space drawings (fusing disconnected planes and merging objects, transparencies, “ghosting” positive shapes). Light, Shadow and Color: The Costumed Figure Outdoors
with Tom Sadler Oct. 24-26, Friday-Sunday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mead Gardens, Winter Park Registration deadline: Oct. 17 A colorfully clothed figure in outdoor light will pose and emphasis will be placed on a strong composition and expressing a true sense of light, shadow and color. Learn how to mass the lights and darks for the greatest effect, how to handle the play of warm and cool color, and learn and experience the importance of values. The first day, Tom will demonstrate blocking in of the figure in a composition, concentrating on the largest simple shapes first. After lunch, students will work on their own paintings with Tom’s help. The other days, Tom also will do demos, and there will be several critiques along the way.
