Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.
Hannibal Square Heritage Center
Hannibal Square Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 W. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. The galleries are open noon–4 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday, noon–5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday. Phone 407-539-2680. Admission is free. Since 2010, Crealdé has partnered with the City of Winter Garden to offer a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children at the Jessie Brock Community Center, which serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site.
Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops in Painting & Drawing, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year, plus Summer ArtCamp. In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Florida. The two galleries on the main campus present a changing variety of multidisciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation and the world. The Contemporary Sculpture Garden overlooking Lake Sterling features more than 60 pieces of original art. Admission to the galleries and gardens is always free.

The exhibition features some of the year’s best student work in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, glass, and fiber arts; juried by Crealdé’s program managers. The opening reception is preceded by Crealdé’s Annual Membership Meeting and the award ceremony from 7-8 p.m., followed by a reception until 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 8.
SYMBIOTIC DANCE: MARIANNA HAMILTON ROSS May 11 – July 28, 2018 Showalter Hughes Community Gallery
Various aqueous painting media allow Marianna Hamilton Ross to explore the interdependence of Man and Nature. Florida’s gardens and native habitats combine with human figures to depict both protective and turbulent relationships. Her work interweaves these observations and provides a fluctuating Symbiotic Dance between Man and Nature – continually challenging, stimulating and yet nurturing. Her work is in many corporate and public collections nationally including the AAA National Headquarters, Bank of America, City of Orlando, Walt Disney World, and South Carolina State Art College. The exhibition is curated by Barbara Tiffany, Crealdé’s Curator of Exhibitions. The opening reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 11. Marianna will demonstrate for the public her technique of silk painting. Derived from the ancient Indonesian batik process using a wax resist and immersion dyeing, this contemporary application combines drawing with a water-based resist, followed by the application of dyes using watercolor painting techniques. Demonstration date is Sunday, June 24 at 2 pm.

STORYTELLERS XVII: WEST OF THE EAST COAST TRACKS: NEW SMYRNA TEENS GIVE US INSIGHT INTO THEIR CHANGING WORLD May 25 – September 1, 2018 Hannibal Square Heritage Center Storytellers 17 takes place in the historic African-American West Side of New Smyrna Beach. The project represents a partnership between Crealdé School of Art and the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum, housed in the former St. Rita Colored Catholic Mission Church, built in 1899 in New Smyrna Beach. Until schools were integrated in the 1960s, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orlando served the West Side with a church, one of the first school for black children in Volusia County and a health clinic.
38TH ANNUAL CUP-A-THON August 10 – 11, 2018 Showalter Hughes Community Gallery
For nearly four decades, this summer social hosted by Vincent Sansone, Ceramics Studio & Program Manager, brings smart shoppers and collectors to the main campus to socialize and browse through hundreds of one-of-a-kind ceramic cups, bowls and other vessels handmade by Crealdé instructors, artists, students and friends. As the tradition goes, “buy a cup and it will be filled.” Proceeds are used to upgrade the ceramics studio and kilns. 7-10 p.m. Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11.
Project creator and Crealdé Executive Director Peter Schreyer mentored and instructed the students in visual and narrative storytelling using traditional film-based photography. Students took field trips to Crealdé, where they learned how to process film and turn negatives into exhibition-quality photographs in the professional wet darkroom. The photographers also visited Crealdé’s Hannibal Square Heritage Center in west Winter Park, where they learned about the educational power of collecting oral histories and photographs within your own community. Storytellers XVII was unveiled in May 2017 and has been a traveling exhibition moving through Volusia County, including showings at Arts on Douglas and the Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences.

SENIOR ART EXHIBITION II APRIL 14 - JULY 28, 2018 Hannibal Square Heritage Center
Through the exploration of color, expression, inspiration, and various art materials and methods - Crealdé School of Art celebrates the tenth year of artwork produced in the Senior Art Program under the guidance of faculty member, Fabiola Hansen. The Senior Art Program is an opportunity for the participating seniors to learn new art styles and techniques. Established in 2000, the Senior Art Program is made possible by the United Arts' Learning Grant and the City of Winter Park Community Redevelopment Agency.
The opening event is May 25 from 7–9 pm at the Heritage Center. There will be a gallery talk by project creator and instructor Peter Schreyer and an opportunity to meet some of the Storytellers. During the exhibition, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center will host a Juneteenth Celebration on June 16, 11 am –3 pm.

Since 1982, Crealdé has presented an annual exhibition featuring works of art from the 300-plus Summer ArtCamp participants, ages 4 to 17. The exhibition includes collaborative and individual works in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and photography. It is curated by Crealdé’s Summer ArtCamp faculty. The opening reception is from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, August 18.

Storytelling with Minny the Mule For years, Minnie the Mule brought food, transportation and joy to Winter Park’s west side residents. In her wooden wagon, Minnie carried produce, passengers and lots of stories for the community. Juneteenth Celebration • June 16th, 11am – 3pm (Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19,1865, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.) The Heritage Center Juneteenth Celebration will feature performances and storytelling including a live reenactment of the renowned educator and activist, Mary McLeod Bethune, a presentation of the H.I.S. Project, Lost But Not Forgotten and Storyteller, Minny the Mule. There will be live music including steel drums, food vendors, and more. This celebration will be free and open to the public. Let’s Talk Diversity, Equity and Inclusion In partnership with Winter Park Public Library, the Heritage Center brings you Let’s Talk, a James Baldwin book discussion group that openly explores the complex condition of being black in America. In the age of Black Lives Matter, Let’s Talk blend’s Baldwin’s writings with contemporary videos for discussion that is current and meaningful. The diversity of voices and experiences represented at Let’s Talk gatherings is essential to its purpose. Learn essential silversmithing skills and methods of cutting, forging, embossing and all the fundamentals of soldering techniques. Instructor: Robert Lennox Saturday, July 28, 9 am-1 pm, Studio 7 Here is your opportunity to enter the cutting-edge world of fused glass! In this one-day workshop, students will learn the studio glass techniques including cutting, fusing, annealing, slumping and more. Safety in the studio will also be covered. Instructor Robert Lennox provides a portable computer-controlled kiln engineered for glass so that students may gain experience loading and firing a kiln. Students will design and fabricate two pieces: a jewelry pendant to wear, and a fused glass sun-catcher. Beginners will gain a variety of new studio skills while more advanced students with stained glass experience will learn how to break free of lead lines! All materials provided. Inspired by form and function paired with unique glazing techniques, his work has been featured in over 80 juried fine art festivals across Florida, including Mainsail Art Festival and Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. A recipient of multiple awards, Gabriel and his work has been featured in the Orlando Sentinel and Tampa Bay Times. He has held a Ceramics fellowship at Crealdé School of Art since 2014. Gabriel now lives Deland, where he maintains his own clay studio and wood shop.

Daily Painting: Guide to Painting Small and Often

But it’s not easy to find time to create when life is so demanding. This course offers techniques to help you commit to painting small and often. At the end of the class, you’ll know more about your personal artistic style and how to overcome common barriers to creativity. Working from still lifes and photos, you’ll have a small body of work (at least 12 – 18 paintings), tools for your ongoing practice, and ways to exhibit your work (for fun and profit). Instructor: Andrew Sides Saturday & Sunday, August 11 & 12, 10 am-2 pm, Studio 1 A In this 2 day, 8-hour workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of constructive drawing and Reilly abstractions to produce a strong, three dimensional drawing of a head from life or imagination. This system of drawing has been a cornerstone of illustration for decades and is used by commercial and fine art illustrators such as Morgan Weistling, EM Gist, Kevin Wueste, James Bama, and more. Over the course of the workshop, students will learn about building complex shapes out of simple forms, using abstraction lines to deconstruct and interpret a head, and how to use edges to map shadows to define light and dark value shapes on the portrait. Any artist that is looking for a new methodology to incorporate into their workflow! The course will involve a seated, clothed model as the focus will be on head drawing and construction only. Bio: A published writer and editor, Linda Saracino reconnected with her visual side several years ago. She works in oils, acrylics and watercolor but is known for mixed-media collage, and has studied with Lynn and John Whipple, and Elizabeth St. Hilaire. Her collages incorporate “found papers”—book pages, letters, photographs, tickets, etc.—plus words as graphic elements. Her work has appeared frequently in juried and invitational exhibits at venues such as CityArts Factory, OMA 1st Thursdays, Art Gallery at Mills Park, Gallery at Avalon Island, Maitland Art Center/Culture Pop, Casselberry Art House, FAVO, Orange County Public Library (downtown), and Crealdé School of Art. She has also exhibited in group shows in New York City, Norway and the UK, and is in private collections nationwide.

Jennifer has been a student of renowned photographer William Wegman, and Photographer/Videographer Elliot Caplan. Jennifer has taught photography and videography for UCF, Daytona State College, Valencia Community College, Seminole State College, and Jackson State University in Mississippi. He studied view-camera and darkroom technique with Ansel Adams, Marie Cosindas, and has photographed architecture and fine art for museums including the Smithsonian and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Time, and Rolling Stone since the 1970’s. Chris takes on photography assignments and motion picture projects across the country and in Europe. WG Impressionism with an Edge
Instructor: Noreen Coup Tuesday, 9:30 am-12:30 pm, 6 Weeks Fall I session starts August 21 Create bold, bright and beautiful contemporary landscapes with a palette knife. For beginners who are intimidated to try with a brush and intermediate artists wanting to loosen up their painting styles. Focus on composition, values, color mixing and paint application.
