about the cover Throughout the 2015-16 academic year, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) will celebrate its 25th anniversary as a co-educational NCAA Division III athletics conference. The conferenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s origins date to 1962 when the College Athletic Conference (CAC) was formed to provide an association through which member institutions could compete in intercollegiate sports activities among teams representative of their respective student bodies. A primary tenet of this conference was a shared commitment to the priority of the overall quality of academic standards and quality educational experiences. The next evolution of the conference took place prior to the 1991-92 academic year when the league moved to add womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletics as part of its sports sponsorship lineup and, as part of this rebirth, changed its name to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The idea behind the SCAC and the commitments made by those charter members in 1991 remain in place today. SCAC member institutions are committed to sponsoring a variety of varsity sports to maximize opportunities for student participation. SCAC schools also operate under the principle that participation in sports should be solely from student interest and enjoyment of athletic competition, and that no financial aid shall be given to any student which is conditional upon athletic ability or participation in intercollegiate sports. SCAC member institutions support students in their efforts to reach high levels of performance by providing them with adequate facilities, competent coaching and appropriate competitive opportunities with students from similar institutions. The SCAC is currently comprised of Austin College of Sherman, Texas; Centenary College of Shreveport, Louisiana; Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colorado; University of Dallas of Irving, Texas; Schreiner University of Kerrville, Texas; Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas; Texas Lutheran University of Seguin, Texas; and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas. The SCAC office is located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.

dwayne hanberry Dwayne Hanberry, 49, enters his 20th year with the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and his seventh as the league’s commissioner. Since the conference reorganzied in 1991, he is the league’s second full-time commissioner. Hanberry was hired by the SCAC in 1995 as the league’s sports information director. He was promoted to assistant commissioner in 2000, associate commissioner in 2005 and served as interim commissioner for six months before being named commissioner in June of 2008. Hanberry is a member of the Division III Commissioner Association (DIIICA), the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) and EMAIL ADDRESS: the College Sports Information Directors of America DHANBERRY@SCACSPORTS.COM (CoSIDA) where he has served on the Membership Services Committee. Hanberry holds a B.B.A. degree from Oglethorpe University where he was a two-year starter on the Petrel basketball team for Coach Jack Berkshire. Hanberry was named team MVP his junior season and is still one of the school’s all-time leaders for single-season field goal percentage, career field goal percentage and rebounds per game - both for a season and a career. Prior to transferring to Oglethorpe, Hanberry was a two-year starter for Coach Lawrence Smithmier at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi. An All-State performer his sophomore season, Hanberry was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2009. He and his wife, Charis, reside in Suwanee, Ga. He has two sons: David (20) is a junior at Southern Polytechnic State (Ga.) University, and Daniel (16) is a junior at Collins Hill High School.

ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER Katie Mucci, 22, enters her second year as the Assistant Director of Communications and New Media at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2015-16. Mucci is responsible for managing the conference’s social media accounts, performing sports information duties for 10 of the conference’s 19 sport and creating all of the graphic designs for online and print use. In addition, Mucci also assists the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner with championship administration and day-to-day administrative duties. After being awarded one of 18 NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Grants, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced the hiring of Katie Mucci as the league’s Assistant Director of Communications & New Media on August 1st, 2014. During her first year at the SCAC, Mucci helped boost the conference’s online presence, using social media to promote conference awards, events and other miscellaneous announcements. After Mucci took the reigns in September 2014, the @ scac_sports Instagram account quickly became the most followed among all Division III conferences (44 total), and the second-most followed among all non-Division I conferences, growing in followers by over 1000%. Mucci also spearheaded the creation of confer-

ence pre-season media guides for eight team sports. Collectively, the guides have been read more than 4,000 times, while earning nearly 30,000 impressions -- the number of times a publication was displayed to a user. The 2015 Baseball Media Guide earned second place among conference media guides in the 2015 CoSIDA Publication Awards, while the cover of the guide earned top honors. Mucci is a 2014 graduate of the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in journalism and mass communication and a minor in business administration. In her final year, she served as the school’s Sports Information Intern where she was the primary media contact for the men’s and women’s golf programs. She also assisted in other areas, including program design for the baseball, volleyball and wrestling programs as well as infographic design that was used on the school’s athletics website and social media accounts. Mucci also served as the Marketing Manager for The Mirror, the UNC student newspaper. In that capacity she was in charge of the paper’s social media strategy as well as the coordination effort to celebrate The Mirror’s 95th birthday. Her marketing strategy during this celebration helped the paper’s Facebook page realize a 30 percent increase in “likes” as well as increasing reach and engagement by 700 percent. SPORTS INFORMATION AND MULTIMEDIA ASSISTANT blake childers

Blake Childers, 22, will begin with the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2015 as the Sports Information and Multimedia Assistant. Childers will be the main contact for various SCAC sports, as well as handling all of the video editing, interviewing and producing duties. Childers is a 2015 graduate of Berry College in Rome, Ga. and worked with both sports information and Viking Fusion, the Berry student-run multimedia website.

With the Sports Information office, Childers assisted with game operations, including statistics, live video stream and photography. He was also the sports producer and assistant news producer for Viking Fusion. Additionally, Childers has worked with the Rome Braves as an audio-visual intern the past three seasons. Childers resides in Suwannee.

history of the scac The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was founded and began operation on September 1, 1962, as the College Athletic Conference (CAC). Centre College of Danville, Kentucky; Southwestern at Memphis (Tennessee) (now known as Rhodes College); The University of the South of Sewanee, Tennessee; and Washington and Lee University of Lexington, Virginia, were the four charter members of the conference. Later in 1962, Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri, became the fifth member and the CAC remained unchanged until 1972. Following membership changes throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the conference went through restructuring and renaming. With the addition of Millsaps College of Jackson, Mississippi, and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas, in 1988 and Hendrix College of Conway, Arkanasas, and Oglethorpe University of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1991, membership reached a then all-time high of eight. That same year (1991), the conference renamed itself the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, hired its first full-time commissioner Stephen P. Argo - and a permanent conference office was established in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of restructuring, the league also adopted its current primary mark and adopted blue (pms 287) and gold (pms 131) as the official colors of the conference. Membership changes continued throughout the '90s. The SCAC added Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas, in 1993 with participation beginning in the 1994-95 academic year. In 1997-98, the SCAC added both DePauw University of Greencastle, Indiana, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology of Terre Haute, Ind., with participation beginning in 1998-99. As part of a year-long celebration in 2005-06, the league celebrated its 15th anniversary as the restructured SCAC. The league adopted a special anniversary logo (pictured left) and as part of the celebration, 15th anniversary teams were selected for all conference sponsored sports. After Rose-Hulman announced its intentions to leave the conference, Austin College of Sherman, Texas and Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colorado, were confirmed as the 10th and 11th members of the league in 2006 with participation beginning in the 2006-07 academic year. Birmingham-Southern College of Birmingham, Alabama, a former member of the Division I Big South Conference, was approved as the 12th member of the SCAC and began play in 2007-08. Prior to the 2010-11 academic year, DePauw University announced that it would leave the conference. The University of Dallas was quickly tabbed to replace DePauw effective July 1, 2011 - maintaining the league's membership total at 12 institutions. On September 28, 2011, Centenary College of Louisiana, a former American Southwest Conference institution, announced it would be joining the SCAC beginning in the 2012-2013 season. Two more ASC schools will join the SCAC for the 2013-14 season: Schreiner University announced their decision on January 23, 2012, and on February 16, 2012, Texas Lutheran University announced it too would join the SCAC. The addition of Texas Lutheran insured that the conference would retain its status as an active NCAA Division III conference as well as automatic bids in nine of its 14 AQ sports, including baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and volleyball. On the national athletics stage, the SCAC has had its fair share of success - both in terms of team championships (eight) and individual championships (33).

7 In the days when the league was known at the College Athletic Conference, Chris Fugman of Centre College gave the conference its first individual title with a victory in the 400 IM at the 1980 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships, and Chris Trapp of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won the men’s javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track Field national championships three straight years (1984-1986). Nao Kinoshita of Rhodes College won the 1996 Division III women’s tennis singles title, capturing the first individual national title in the SCAC era. Kinoshita also won the 1997 singles title and combined with Taylor Tarver to capture the ‘97 doubles title. Ryan Loftus of Rose-Hulman captured the men’s pole vault title at the 1998 Indoor Track & Field championships. Heather Stone of University of the South-Sewanee claimed both the women’s indoor and outdoor 1,500 meter titles in 2000. And later that same season, the league claimed its first team national championships as Trinity University won both the men’s and women’s tennis titles. In the winter of 2003, Matt Smith of Rose-Hulman won the 100 yard breaststroke at the Division III men’s national swimming championships, and Trinity captured the women’s basketball championship - all in the same weekend. The following fall (in 2003), the Trinity men’s soccer team gave the league title #4, and the DePauw women’s basketball team became the fifth team from the conference to win a national championship when it captured the 2006-07 Division III title. Trinity’s Christyn Schumann won the women’s high jump at three consecutive NCAA Outdoor Track & Field national championships (2004-06), and Liz Bondi of DePauw captured the 16th individual national championship won by a CAC/SCAC student-athlete when she won the 2007 women’s tennis singles title. The 2008-09 season was a banner year as one team and three individual student-athletes won national titles for the SCAC. Todd Wildman of Trinity won the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field national championships and Chrys Jones of Centre College won the triple jump at the Outdoor Track & Field national championships. On the links, the Oglethorpe University men earned the league’s sixth team title with a first-place finish at the NCAA Golf Championships. The Petrels were led by Olafur Loftsson, who earned medalist honors and the league’s 19th individual title. In 2009-10, the SCAC had four different individuals win a total of five national titles. Todd Wildman of Trinity won his second-consecutive

indoor national title in the pentathlon. Centre’s Chrys Jones double-dipped and claimed national titles in the triple jump at the both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor national championships. At the 2010 NCAA Swimming & Diving championships, Trinity teammates Lindsay Martin and Hayley Emerick claimed individual titles in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, respectively. In 2010-11, Chrys Jones became just the second SCAC student-athlete to win four career individual national titles as he repeated at the NCAA Indoor national championships in the triple jump. Centre’s Chris Morris earned the league its 26th individual national title when he claimed medalist honors at the 2011 NCAA Golf Championships. The 2011-12 academic year was one of the most successful in the league’s 50-year history. Tiarra Goode of Birmingham-Southern College won the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field national championships, Jordan DeGayner of Colorado College won the 200 free at the NCAA Swimming & Diving national championships and Ruth Hahn of Trinity University continued the Tigers’ diving dominanace with an individual title on the 3-meter board. Later in the spring, SCAC student-athletes earned two more individual national titles with Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe University earning the league its third medalist in four years at the NCAA Men’s Golf championship and Birmingham’s Goode picked up her second individual national title with a win in the 100-meter hurdels at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships. In addition, Oglethorpe University earned the conference its seventh team national title with a victory at the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. The “new” SCAC returned to national prominence in 2013-14 as Stephen Culberson of Trinity University won the 100 free at the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships and, in its first year in the conference, Schreiner University gave the conference its eighth team national championship with a victory at the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships - the league’s third national title in the sport in six years. A bell, donated by the Norfolk and Western Railway, was adopted as the SCAC’s “President’s Trophy” and serves as the symbol for the conference. The President’s Trophy is displayed for one year on the campus of the school with the combined men’s and women’s athletics program that accumulates the highest points total in the all-sports race established by the conference. The bell is awarded at the conclusion of the spring season.

LOREN DAWSON Loren Dawson enters his seventh season at the helm of Austin College football in 2015. After having previously served as defensive coordinator for the Kangaroos, coach Dawson returned to Austin College after having served during the 2008 and 2009 seasons as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Colorado School of Mines with head coach Bob Stitt, former Austin College offensive coordinator. Dawson has 20 years of coaching experience and is no stranger to the Austin College community. His association with Austin College started in 1987 when he played one season for the Kangaroos under legendary coach Mel Tjeerdsma. Dawson returned to the Austin College community in 2002, and through the 2007 season, served as the defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator, under previous head coaches David Norman and Ronnie Gage. Dawson also served as an assistant professor in the Austin College Department of Exercise and Sport Science. A 1993 graduate of Arizona State University, Dawson also earned his master’s degree in education at ASU in 1998. Dawson served as a graduate assistant coaching

the running backs at Midwestern State University in 1993 and 1994 before taking the role of head football coach at Bourgade Catholic High School in Phoenix for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. From 1999-2002, Dawson served as the assistant head football coach at Phoenix College, where he also was the assistant athletic director as well as the team’s recruiting, special teams and strength and conditioning coordinators. Dawson also spent time at Phoenix College coaching the offensive line and linebackers. In addition, he coached the defensive backs. He also served as the team’s academic advisor. In addition to his coaching experience, Dawson has been active in community service, including coordination of the Austin College football team’s community service efforts. He also volunteered as a coach for Sherman Youth Baseball and Texoma Youth Soccer and served on the Advisory Board for St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sherman. Dawson served in that same capacity for Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School in Lakewood, Colorado. Loren and his wife Stephanie live in Sherman with their children Gaven and Faith.

players to watch MADISON ROSS

SR., RB, FORT WORTH, TEXAS Ross, a senior running back, will enter his final season in 2015. As a junior, he led the ‘Roos with 965 rushing yards, averaging 6.2 yards per carry and running in nine touchdowns. His longest rush of the season came against Occidental, when he went 83 yards for a touchdown. This was a breakout season for the running back, totaling almost triple the amoung of rushing yards he had posted in his first two seasons. Ross also grabbed 62 yard receiving for 1,027 all-purpose yards.

BRETT VAUGHN

SR., DL, CARROLTON, TEXAS Vaughn, a senior defensive lineman, played in all 10 games for the ‘Roos last season and will return for his final campaign. He totaled 40 tackles, averaging 4.0 per game. He also notched 6.5 tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks, one blocked field goal and one fumble recovery. Two of his sacks one the season came in the first SCAC game of the year against Southwestern. He also marked a season-high eight tackles in the final game of the year against Trinity.

BROOKS WARD

SR., LB, GRAND PRARIE, TEXAS Ward, a senior linebacker, enters his final season with the ‘Roos in 2015. He totaled 88 tackles, the top mark among AC and thirdbest among the conference, averging 8.8 tackles per game. 39 of his 88 tackles were solo efforts, which is the second-most among all defensive players. Last season he also posted a sack, 8.5 tackles for loss and one interception. He posted a career-high 15 tackles against Southwestern Assemblies of God, while he was able to mark double-digit tackles on three other occasions last season.

KYLE CRAWFORD

SR., TE, ROCKWALL, TEXAS Crawford, a senior tight end, played in all 10 games last season and led the team with 699 receiving yards. He scored four touchdowns in 2014, which was second among all receivers. He grabbed a career-high 153 yards against East Texas Baptist in the second game of the season, including his second-longest reception of the year, 58 yards. Crawford’s longest reception came against Southwestern in the first meeting of two teams last season. He was able to connect on an 81 yard pass from quarterback Noah Jesko to score the first touchdown of the game.

2015 season preview

The 2015 campaign will see plenty of transition for the Austin College football team, as head coach Loren Dawson and his staff replace 23 seniors, including 18 former starters from last year’s squad. Last season the ‘Roos finished 5-5 with a 1-2 record in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, but find themselves in unfamiliar territory, having to find new starters at several major positions. Fortunately for Dawson, he’s got several key performers coming back this year including first team All-SCAC running back Madison Ross to lead the offense, and a defense that will feature senior All-SCAC performers Brooks Ward and Brett Vaughn leading the charge. Ross rushed for 965 yards and averaged 6.2 yards-per-carry, scoring nine touchdowns to finish among the conference leaders in all three categories. Ward, a middle linebacker, was among the SCAC leaders with 88 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss, and Vaughn, a defensive tackle, had 40 stops including 6.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks. Joining them on the defense will be Delmas Hoye, the lone returning starter in the secondary. The cornerback finished fourth on the team with 58 tackles and picked off two passes last year. Back on the offensive side of the ball, Ross will get help from leading pass catcher Kyle Crawford. The tight end returns this season after hauling in 42 passes for 699 yards and four touchdowns on his way to earning D3Football. com All-Region honors for the second straight year. However, the big question mark on offense will be at the quarterback spot, as Dawson finds himself forced to start a new signal caller for the first time since the 2011 campaign. Gone is Noah Jesko, who set an Austin College record with 906 career pass attempts and fell just short of breaking the career yardage mark, and Dawson expects it to be an ongoing competition to find a replacement throughout fall camp. Jesko isn’t the only valuable member of the offense the ‘Roos will be forced to replace, as Austin College also must find another runner to complement Ross after losing All-Conference back Bryce Murphy to graduation. Still, there are several skill position playmakers returning this season including Cooper Woodyard, Kevin Ray, and Brandon Rawls, and Dawson expects receiver Shawn Slowinski to make an impact in the passing game this year. The ‘Roos could also see the emergence of receiver Joe Traylor, a 6-foot-4, 205 pound junior who transferred in last year but sat out during the 2014 campaign. Traylor adds tremendous size and athleticism to go along with the quickness of Ray and the consistency and strength of Crawford. “A big focus has been and will continue to be improving situational football, whether it’s down and distance or in the red zone,” said Dawson. “With the defense, we want to cut down on giving up big plays, and on offense the focus has been on third down conversions.”

Leading the way up front is an offensive line that will need to replace several key members from last season’s squad, but returns enough experience to make it a strength of the team. Cole Caldwell and Judd Mahan return to man the left side of the line, while Spencer Moore is poised to recover from a season ending injury a year ago and reclaim his spot as the team’s starting right tackle. Replacing starting center Cody Kovach won’t be easy, but Branden Hunt received significant playing time last year and should be able to do an admirable job filling the void. On defense, Austin College must find a way to replace departed defensive backs Colter Headrick, Scott Loy, and Shane Hodge, but Dawson believes the pieces are in place to put together a strong group alongside Hoye. Max James could make an impact, along with Stevie Reyna, Shane Brooks, and Major Adams in the secondary. Linebacker is another position that will need a little bit of revamping, but Kendall St. Romain, Charles Eneh, and Darlon Chandler should all get chances to expand on the potential they’ve flashed in backup roles. Dawson also expects defensive lineman Wesley Thompson to take on a bigger role this season. Austin College also faces the difficult challenge of an unbalanced home and away schedule this season, playing in the friendly confines of Apple Stadium just four times in 2015. The ‘Roos will be home the first two Saturdays of the season, but play at home just once in October before returning to Apple for Homecoming on November 14 against Trinity. Along with the challenges of playing so few games at home and replacing 23 graduated seniors, the coaching staff has undergone some changes with a new defensive coordinator in Mike Silva. The ‘Roos will also have a new special teams coordinator and offensive line coach this season. “We’re going to work hard to travel with a championship approach,” said Dawson when asked about the unusual number of road trips. “We can’t let being on the road impact our ability to play at our best.” The ‘Roos will be reporting to fall camp on August 13, and kick off the 2015 season at home against Hendrix College at 1:00 p.m. on September 5. JOE austin Joe Austin enters his third year as the head coach of Southwestern’s football program. He was hired in February 2012, as the University reinstated the program following a 63-year hiatus. In two seasons, Austin has coached 16 All-SCAC selections and 31 academic all-conference honorees. Austin’s second campaign with the squad featured the first win for the Pirates since the 1950 season, as Southwestern topped Sul Ross State, 27-20, on Sept. 13, 2014. The Pirates averaged 339.9 yards of total offense, while the defense limited opponents to nearly 80 less yards per contest. He mentored eight all-conference performers, including four first-teamers. Nik Kelly also was named SCAC Newcomer of the Year after leading the league with six interceptions. Additionally, 18 SU players earned academic all-league honors. In his first season at the helm of the Pirates, Austin saw the Pirates place three first-year players on the All-SCAC First Team, including defensive end Justin Broussard, who topped the league in sacks. In addition to the trio of first-team selections, Southwestern earned five honorable-mention All-SCAC selections. His offense threw for more than 2,100 yards in their first season and averaged just over 200 yards passing per game. The 2013 season also saw 13 Pirates earn a spot on the SCAC Academic Honor Roll. Austin came to Southwestern after transforming Hanover College’s football program in a short time frame. In three years at Hanover, he took a team that was in a decline to a rising star in the Heartland

Collegiate Athletic Conference, finishing in second place the last two seasons. Prior to Hanover, Austin guided the University of Dubuque to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 28 seasons. The Spartans finished 7-3 in 2007 and 6-4 in 2006 in a highly competitive Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. During that time Austin’s offensive unit set 33 school records and in 2007 averaged 35.6 points and 433.4 offensive yards per game. On his way to Dubuque, Austin made stops in Augsburg College as the offensive coordinator for one season and was an offensive assistant coach at Concordia University-St. Paul for four campaigns. While at Concordia-St. Paul, the Golden Bears finished ranked in the top 10 nationally at the NCAA Division II level in total offense (6th-2003/7th-2002). Concordia averaged more than 35 points per game and set virtually every school passing, rushing and receiving record during his tenure. A former small-college athlete, Austin played quarterback at St. Ambrose University (Iowa) for two seasons. He suffered a broken vertebrae in his back six games into his sophomore season. The injury, which required reconstructive surgery, ended his playing career but jump started his coaching career. Austin earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Concordia-St. Paul in 2001 and a master’s degree in organizational management from the same institution three years later.

Wilburn, a junior running back, will return for his junior season in 2015. He started the final seven games, garnering honorable-mention All-SCAC honors after leading the team with 585 all-purpose yards (83.6 ypg), fourth in the conference. Wilburn also led the team with 540 rushing yards, averaging 77.1 per game.

Sherman, a junior wide receiver, enters the 2015 season after garnering first-team All-SCAC honors in 2014. Sherman led the team with 584 receiving yards, while leading the SCAC with 44 receptions. He averaged 64.9 receiving yards per game and 13.3 yards per catch, hauling in a team-best four touchown passes.

JR., DE, BEAUMONT, TEXAS Broussard, a junior defensive end, comes into his junior season this year. Broussard started all nine games for the Pirates in 2014 and was named First-Team All-SCAC for the second straight season. He ranked second among the squad with 58 total tackles, including 16 for loss, which was second in the SCAC. Broussard also ranked second in the SCAC with six sacks. He led the conference with four forced fumbles and posted a team-best 10 quarterback hurries.

SO., CB, LEAGUE CITY, TEXAS Kelly, a sophomore corner back, will come back for his second season with the Pirates after being named the 2014 SCAC Newcomer of the Year. Kelly earned First Team All-SCAC honors. In his first season, he posted 42 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss. He also led the conference with six interceptions, picking off two passes in Southwesternâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s season-opening win. His average of 0.7 interceptions per game ranked 16th among all NCAA Division III.

2015 season preview

When Joe Austin was hired as the head football coach at Southwestern University in 2012, he explained that it would take three years for the Pirates to close the gap, in terms of physical maturity. “In year one, we were playing all true freshmen. In year two, we closed the gap and we’ll continue to do that again this season.” Austin says the team’s strength gains in the weight room will show on the field this year. “We have guys on this team that can line up against anyone on our schedule and be at the same level.” The third-year head coach for the Pirates also expects constant improvement, which will lead to results on the scoreboard. Last year, Austin guided Southwestern to a 27-20 victory over Sul Ross State, which marked the first win since the program was reinstated by the University. After rotating through a few signal callers last season due to injuries, Austin is ready for Bryan Hicks to return to lead the offense. “I’d like to see him make that next step to an elite-level player. He’s a talented passer.” The 6-foot, 180-pounder threw for 1,056 yards and 11 touchdowns, while completing 58.7 percent of his passes last season. Despite playing only four games, Hicks was named honorable-mention All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Jeremy Snyder started the Pirates’ final game of the 2014 season under center. The Taylor, Texas, native is described as one of the hardest working players on the roster. Last year as a sophomore, Snyder completed 19 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown. Another key position that Austin hopes can stay healthy this season is running back. Justin Pelt was forced to play quarterback last season due to injuries, while Dylan Wilburn has battled injuries in both of his first two campaigns in Georgetown. In addition to throwing for 798 yards and five touchdowns, Pelt rushed for 304 yards and found the end zone once on the ground. Meanwhile, Wilburn was an honorable-mention All-SCAC selection after leading Southwestern with 585 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns. The 5-foot-7, 205-pound running back averaged 77.1 yards per game on the ground, while also catching five passes out of the backfield. The most decorated position on the offensive side of the ball is Southwestern’s pass catchers. Wide receivers Matt Gillen and Micah Sherman both earned first-team All-SCAC honors a year ago. Sherman, who hails from Justin, Texas, led the conference with 44 receptions, while posting a team-high 584 receiving yards. Gillen, a 6-foot-2, 195-pounder, has earned first-team all-league honors in back-to-back seasons. Last year, he posted 41 receptions and three touchdowns. Austin also is expecting Kenneth Wynn Jr. and Dante Smith to be factors in the passing game. The Pirates will welcome back 2013 honorable-mention All-SCAC tight end Brandon Fleischmann, who missed all of last season due to an injury. “We’re excited to have him back,” Austin said. “His aggression is different than most guys. He doesn’t stop at the point of attack, ever. He is really athletic for his size.”

Fleischmann posted 22 receptions for 175 yards and a touchdown as a freshman. The offensive line is one of the units that Austin and his staff has been waiting to come around. This year, the group up front will benefit the most from an extra year of strength training and experience. Will Devine, a 6-foot-2, 280-pound junior, played every game at tackle a year ago. Andrew Pratt (6-2/310) started all nine contests at guard as a sophomore, while Dereck Harenda (6-0/245) played in seven contests at the other guard position. PJ Quinters (6-0/290) saw action in eight games, including five starts at center as a freshman. On the other side of the ball, the defensive line has been a strength for Austin’s squad in the last two seasons. Austin points to the unit’s quickness for its success. Defensive team leaders Justin Broussard and Nick Mask are two of the key pieces to the scheme. Broussard has collected first-team All-SCAC accolades in back-to-back campaigns. Last year, the 6-foot-1, 235-pound defensive end ranked second in the league with six sacks and 16 tackles for loss. The middle layer of the defense is expected to be another unit that improves in 2015. Zach Cole, a junior from Orange, Texas, saw action in all nine games, including seven as a starter. The 5-foot-11, 220-pounder ranked fourth on the team with 47 tackles, including four for loss. Austin hopes Tyler Frisby (6-0/205) can return to his all-conference form from his freshman campaign. Last year as a sophomore, he finished third on the team with 50 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. Despite being a young crew last season, the secondary proved to be one of the top units in the conference. Sophomore cornerbacks Nik Kelly and DeeJay Johnson lead the way. Kelly was named SCAC Newcomer of the Year in addition to earning first-team all-league honors. The 5-foot-7, 170-pounder led the conference with six interceptions, while also registering 42 tackles. Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 160-pound native of Humble, Texas, was an honorable-mention All-SCAC pick. He recorded 26 tackles and one interception as a freshman. Junior Taylor Fann is a versatile athlete who can play both cornerback and safety. Last year, the McKinney, Texas, native garnered honorable-mention All-SCAC laurels after posting 47 tackles and five interceptions. Laith Tucker returns as the Pirates placekicker this season. The junior from Houston was 3-of-9 in field goal attempts a year ago. However, Austin said he had a really good spring season. He also will be pushed by Tyler Adams. DANNY padron Texas Lutheran Head Football Coach Danny Padron, a two-time SCAC Coach of the Year, enters his sixth season with the Bulldogs. In 2014, Padron led TLU to a second consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and to the university’s first-ever post-season appearance as a member of the NCAA Division III. TLU went 9-2 overall in 2014 and won the SCAC with a 3-0 mark. The Bulldogs ended 2014 at school-best positions in national polls from the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com. The Bulldogs finished at No. 16 in the AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll and at No. 19 in the D3football.com Top 25. TLU is ranked preseason No. 13 by Sporting News and preseason No. 21 by D3football.com. TLU qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championships and fell in the first round of the playoffs. TLU lost 27-20 on the road to then No. 2-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor. Padron’s star running back, Marquis Barrolle, picked up 2014 All-American honors from D3football.com and USA College Football as a sophomore. Barrolle won the NCAA Division III rushing title with a school-record 1,792 yards in 11 games. Barrolle was named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Barrolle scored 14 touchdowns and set or tied TLU school marks for rushing yards in a game (288), rushing TDs in a game (4, tied with three others), total TDs in a game (4, tied with five others), points scored in a game (24, tied with five others), carries in a game (50), all-purpose

yardage in a game (324), all-purpose yardage in a season (2,068), games with more than 200 yards rushing (4), and games with more than 100 yards rushing (8). Barrolle also ranked among the 2014 NCAA DIII leaders in rushing yards per game (second, with 162.9) and in all-purpose yards per game (fifth, with 188). The Bulldogs’ offense posted final NCAA rankings of eighth in total offense, 14th in rushing offense, 18th in scoring offense, 21st in sacks allowed, 10th in first downs offense, and 21st in time of possession. The Bulldogs’ defense ended the year ranked 10th in team sacks, 14th in total tackles for loss, ninth in team tackles for loss, and 21st in defensive touchdowns. Padron led the Bulldogs to the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. TLU’s championship squad went 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the SCAC. Padron quickly turned around a TLU program that was coming off an 0-10 season when he inherited it in 2010. The 2013 season record of 8-1 was the best overall record for TLU since the 1976 NAIA-II semifinal team went 10-1. In 2013, the Bulldogs were ranked in the Top 25 by the American Football Coaches Association and received votes in the D3football.com Top 25. At the conclusion of the 2013 season, TLU was third in DIII in total offense (521.2), sixth in scoring offense (46.1) and ninth in passing offense (326.7). Padron also coached place-kicker Allen Cain to a pair of First Team All-America and First Team Academic All-America honors in 2011 and 2012.

MARQUIS BARROLLE

JR., RB, INGLESIDE, TEXAS Barrolle, a junior running back, was named to the Preseason All-America Second Team by D3football.com, Preseason All-America Team by Sporting News and Preseason All-America by USA College Football. He is the feature back returning for his third season with the Bulldogs and one of the most dynamic running backs to suit up for TLU. He enters 2015 as the nation’s defending rushing champion for NCAA Division III. Along with senior RB A.J. Saucedo and senior QB Trenton White, Barrolle makes up one of the best backfields in all of NCAA DIII. Barrolle uses childhood training as tumbler to his advantage and he is capable of scoring on any given carry.

DARIAN CANDLER

JR., LB, HUMBLE, TEXAS Candler, a junior linebacker, was a big-time defensive playmaker in 2014 and is back for his junior season. He was the team’s starter at one of two linebacking positions. Candler could also handle team’s deep-snapping duties.He was a key special teams player on all special teams units.Candler earned Honorable Mention All-SCAC in 2014. He played and started in all 11 games and was a key member of SCAC Championship and NCAA playoff squad. He had eight tackles and a career-best four tackles for loss in the NCAA playoff game against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

32 TRENTON WHITE

SR., QB, SACHSE, TEXAS White, a senior quarterback, will be a leader of the Bulldog offense for a second consecutive season.White enters 2015 season after outstanding junior season that had him leading Bulldogs to first-ever NCAA Division III post-season and to second straight SCAC Championship. White is outstanding at ball fakes and at quick readings of defenses - both pre-snap and mid-play. He was a first Team All-SCAC quar terback and started all 11 games in 2014, leading TLU to a 9-2 record, to the NCAA playoffs, and to a second straight SCAC Championship.He ear earned SCAC Offensive Player of the Week honors twice last season, and was responsible for 30 Bulldog touchdowns. He posted a 75-yard TD run against Southwestern and rushed for career-best 135 yards in the same game. He also threw for career-best 329 yards, with four scores, in road win at Southwestern Assemblies of God.

DRAKE DOWLING

SR., DB, KATY, TEXAS Dowling, a senior free safety, was a play-maker in defensive secondary and on special teams. He starts for Bulldogs at free safety and at punt returner and will contend for significant post-season individual honors. He was a 2014 Third Team All-South Region selection by D3football.com, 2014 SCAC First Team selection and 2014 Cliff Harris Award nominee. Dowling played and started in all 11 games of 2014 and was a key contributor on Bulldogs’ 2013 & 2014 SCAC Championship squads and 2014 NCAA playoff team. He ranked second on team in 2014 in total tackles, with 78, but led team in interceptions, with five, in 2014.

2015 season preview

Texas Lutheran Head Football Coach Danny Padron will begin his sixth season with the Bulldogs in 2015, trying to add to his overall record of 30-20. His 30 wins are the second-most in school history, behind only TLU Hall of Famer Jim Wacker (36). The Bulldogs will take a D3football.com preseason national ranking of No. 21 into the Sept. 5 season-opener in Alpine, Texas against Sul Ross State. Coming off a 2014 NCAA Division III post-season appearance, the Bulldogs are in the D3football.com Top 25 preseason poll for the first time in school history. TLU also received a No. 13 NCAA Division III preseason ranking from Sporting News. Junior running back Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) picked up a spot on the Sporting News Preseason All-America squad and on the D3football.com Preseason Second Team. The Bulldogs ended 2014 at school-best positions in national polls from the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com. The Bulldogs finished at No. 16 in the AFCA Division III Coaches’ Poll and at No. 19 in the D3football.com Top 25. TLU qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championships for the first time in school history and fell in the first round of the playoffs. TLU lost 27-20 on the road to then No. 2-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor. Barrolle won the NCAA Division III rushing title with a school-record 1,792 yards in 11 games. Barrolle was named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Year. JERHEME Urban Jerheme Urban will lead the Trinity Tigers football team for a second season, as the 2015 campaign nears. Coach Urban, a 2003 Trinity graduate, was appointed to the top position in November 2013, after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons. He took over the reins from Steve Mohr, who retired after 24 seasons as head coach. Following the 2014 season, four Tigers players were elected as USA College Football All-Americans, and 16 were tabbed for the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Teams. Nine of Coach Urban’s returning players have been selected as 2015 USA College Football Pre-Season All-Americans. Coach Urban brought a wealth of National Football League experience back to Trinity, when he joined the staff in 2012. During his nine-year NFL career, the talented wide receiver played for the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals (including the 2008 Super Bowl team), and Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Urban completed his NFL career with 91 receptions for 1,266 yards and eight touchdowns. During his days on Trinity’s campus (19992003), Coach Urban was a versatile student-athlete, excelling in football and track and field. He holds Trinity records in career touchdowns scored, career receiving touchdowns (tied),

single-season receiving touchdowns, and single-season TD receptions. Coach Urban is also ranked second in career receiving yards, career points scored, and career kickoff returns. Coach Urban was a three-time All-SCAC honoree, and was elected to All-America Teams by D3football.com (First Team) and the Football Gazette (Second Team). He was a key player on the 2002 Trinity football team which made it all the way to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl (the NCAA Division III Championship game). On the track, Coach Urban was named the SCAC Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year four straight times, from 2000-2003. It marked the first time in conference history a SCAC athlete achieved that feat. He is also a Trinity record-holder in the 400 meters, 4x400-meter relay, and the triple jump. Coach Urban earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history from Trinity. Shortly after graduation, Coach Urban signed an NFL contract. While at Trinity, Coach Urban met his future wife, Emily (Goodwin), a 2003 graduate who was also a standout in track and field. The couple has a daughter, Liesl, and twin sons, Luke and Barrett. A native of Victoria, (TX), Coach Urban attended Stroman High School.

Blaschke, a senior quarterback, returns for his fifth year at Trinity, using up his final year of eligibility after a season-ending injury took him out in the first game of the 2013 season. Last season, Blaschke ranked third in the SCAC with 111.6 passing yards per game, throwing six touchdowns on the season. He went 95-231 (.411) and totaled 1,116 yards on the season. Blaschke also rushed for 417 yards, the third best mark on the Tigers’ squad and second best in the SCAC among quarterback

SR., WR, PEARLAND, TEXAS Sandman, a senior wide receiver, will return to the gridiron this season after missing all of 2014 due to an injury. In 2013, Sandman was one of the Tigers top receivers, totaling 630 yards on 35 receptions, averaging 18.0 yards per catch, the conference’s best mark. Sandman’s 630 yard total ranked second among the Tigers and fifth in the SCAC. He put up a career-high 140 yards on four receptions in a 58-20 win over Southwestern that season, getting into the endzone twice.

Matthews, a senior defensive lineman, played in all 10 games last season for the Tigers. In his junior campaign, Matthews posted 36 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, including five sacks and one forced fumble. JR., LB, KATY, TEXAS Turner, a junior linebacker, had a successful sophomore campaign, earning the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year honor after leading the conference with 103 tackles (10.3 per game). He also posted 10 tackles for loss, including two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Turner marked a season-high 13 tackles on October 18 in a close victory over Southwestern.

2015 season preview

Head Coach Jerheme Urban will utilize the leadership of 16 returning starters as the Tigers 2015 campaign kicks off September 5 at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. Trinity’s defensive unit returns 10 starters, the offense brings back six, and special teams will have one returning starting player, who also will start on defense. Coach Urban had a special message for Tiger fans, as Trinity opens its six-game home schedule September 12 against Willamette (OR) University. “I expect the fans to see a more accomplished unit,” Coach Urban said. “We played a lot of young guys last year, and we grew up a lot. The players have grown physically and matured. We will have a more explosive football team this season.” Trinity will host Sul Ross State University September 19, and Hardin-Simmons University October 3. The Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2015 will be introduced during halftime of the Hardin-Simmons matchup. The Tigers host Austin College October 17, and begin their SCAC schedule October 31 with Texas Lutheran University. The final regular-season home game is slated for November 7, in an SCAC game with Southwestern University. The remaining three road games start September 26 as the Tigers travel to Tacoma, Washington, to take on Pacific Lutheran University. Trinity will trek up Interstate Highway 35 to Georgetown, Texas, October 24, for the first game with Southwestern. The regular-season finale will be held November 14 in Sherman, Texas, as Trinity wraps up with an SCAC game against Austin College. Coach Urban and his staff have the highest respect for their returnees, who are all “scrappers.” He also has high hopes for the 31 newcomers, consisting of 17 on offense, 13 on defense, and one on special teams. “We are expecting playmaking abilities from our freshman class,” Coach Urban said. “We believe we have some young talent coming to compete to fill the shoes of the graduates.” Trinity scored 21.7 points per game during the 2014 season, and racked up 3,068 yards of total offense (1,116 yards rushing, 1,452 yards passing). The Tigers put up an average of 306.8 yards per game. “A strong point of our offense last season was running the football,” Coach Urban said. “We are excited about what our passing game can do for us this year, as a complement to our running game. The receivers are back, and our players have one more year experience under

their belts.” Starters lost were tight end Sam Harford, wide receivers Matthew Kennemer and LeAndrew Gordon, and offensive linemen Conner Cox and Jonathan Prescott. Trinity sat atop the conference rankings in scoring defense, yielding 23.5 points per game. The Tigers also led the SCAC in total defense (326.9 yards per game), rushing defense (132.2 yards per game), and pass defense (194.7 yards per game). Senior Mason Blaschke returns for a fifth year, after being injured in the 2013 season-opener. Blaschke completed 95 passes for 1,116 yards and six touchdowns in 2014, as well as rushing for 417 yards and two TDs. The versatile Blaschke also snagged a 46-yard pass for a TD, and punted the ball eight times for 312 yards, a 39.0 yards-per-punt average. “We will take our speed to the next level,” said Coach Urban of his stalwart defensive unit. “We were the No. 1 defense in the conference last year. The challenge is to be a top-five defense in the country. Athletically, we have that ability.” Defensive starters lost to graduation were linebacker Connor Yorloff and D-Lineman Bradley Drenon. The Tigers were ranked seventh in the nation last season in kickoff returns. Trinity returned 36 kickoffs for 916 yards, an average of 25.4 yards, and one touchdown. “The kickoff return unit was outstanding for us,” Coach Urban said. “We have some guys coming back who had success running the football, and we are going to give them the opportunity to pay.
