13 2013-14 SCAC MEN’S BASKETBALL HONORS COACHES OF THE YEAR
ADAM WALSH PAT CUNNINGHAM CENTENARY
In his fourth season at the helm of the Centenary program, Walsh has guided the Gents through the difficult transition from NCAA Division I to NCAA Division III that began with a 1-29 mark in 2010-11 against mostly Division I competition to this year’s squad that has posted a 16-9 overall mark (10-4 in conference) and secured the second seed for this weekend’s SCAC tournament. This year’s Centenary squad will finish the year with the program’s first winning season since 2003-04. Following the difficult 2010-11 season, Walsh has led the Gents to a 36-35 overall mark and his last two teams have produced the SCAC Player-of-the-Year. Additionally, he is the first men’s basketball coach at Centenary to earn a conference Coach-of-the-Year honor since Tommy Vardeman was named the Trans America Athletic Conference (now Atlantic Sun Conference) COTY in back-to-back seasons in 1989-90 and 1990-91.
JONATHAN BLOUNT CO-PLAYER OF-THE-YEAR
Centenary’s Blount is on pace to lead the SCAC in scoring for the second consecutive year and his 23.9 points per game average, if sustained, would be the second-highest single game average in league history. With 597 total points heading into this weekend’s tournament, Blount is just six points from tying the SCAC single-season record for points scored. He has also been efficient this season, shooting 50.6 percent from the field (sixth in the SCAC), 45.0 percent from threepoint range (second in the SCAC) and 84.8 percent from the free-throw line (third in the SCAC). A four-time SCAC Player-of-the-Week this season, Blount set a new Centenary single-game scoring record with 53 points against Open Bible College on Feb. 18 and currently ranks 11th in program history in scoring with 1,488 career points. The 2012-13 SCAC Player-of-the-Year, he becomes just the second men’s player in league history to earn back-to-back POTY honors and the first since Sewanee’s Ryan Harrigan in 1996-97 and 1997-98.
TRINITY
Cunningham, in his 15th season with Trinity, has led the Tigers to a 16-9 overall mark, an 11-3 conference record and the No. 1 seed in this year’s conference tournament. This is the sixth time that Cunningham has been honored as the league’s Coach-of-the-Year – the most of any men’s basketball coach in the league’s 23-year history. The winningest men’s basketball coach in Trinity history, Cunningham has amassed a record of 290-123 (.702) while in San Antonio and has guided the Tigers to eight NCAA Division III playoff appearances and six Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, including the last two. Trinity stands at 171-60 (.740) in the SCAC under Coach Cunningham’s leadership – the second-most conference wins of any coach in league history. In his 27th season as a collegiate head coach, Cunningham sports an overall career mark of 441-286.
AJ MYRES
CO-PLAYER/ DEFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR
Schreiner’s Myres is currently second in the conference in scoring (18.8 ppg) as well as seventh in assists (75) and eighth in field goal percentage (48.7%). Although the senior’s scoring dipped somewhat in the latter part of the season, it was largely due to the emergence of new scoring threats for the Mountaineers as evidenced by Myres’ 52 assists during conference play – the second-highest total in the league. Myres, who is in his third season at Schreiner, has 1,104 career points – the second-most by any player in the school’s Division III era (1999-present) and 11th-most overall. In addition to sharing Player-of-the-Year honors with Blount, Myres will always be connected with his counterpart in that he, like Blount, earned SCAC POTY honors in his first team’s season of competition in the conference. Prior to last season, only Rose-Hulman’s Bryan Egli (1998-99) could make that claim. Myres, who is always pitted against the opponent’s strongest perimeter player, was also recognized for his prowess on that side of the court in earning SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year. Currently fourth in the SCAC in steals (37) and 15th in blocks (7), he is the first men’s player in the history of the conference to earn Playerof-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors in the same season.
KENDALL DEMOUCHET NEWCOMER OF-THE-YEAR
Demouchet, who earned SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors, currently sits atop the conference in both steals (46) and field goal percentage (54.1%) and is second in total blocks (47) and ninth in rebounds per game (5.0). A Third Team All-SCAC selection, he is third on the Gents squad in scoring entering this weekend’s tournament, averaging 10.4 points per game. Demouchet’s selection marks the second consecutive year that a Centenary player has won SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors.

KANGAROOS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW
22
As the Austin College men’s basketball team enters the 2014-2015 season, the ‘Roos will be looking to make a move up the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings after finishing last season with an overall record of 9-16 and a conference mark of 4-10. Last year head coach Rodney Wecker leaned heavily on a talented crop of freshmen, and the experience they gained should only help as the team looks to get back to the SCAC Tournament in the upcoming season. Of course, Wecker won’t be relying only on his strong younger players as the team also features an experienced group of veterans. Senior guard Kevin Graham, along with senior post players Alvin Michael and Harry Hampden-Smith will be looked to for leadership. Graham and Michael both played key roles last season, while Hampden-Smith returns after missing most of the year due to injury. Graham, a lightning quick combination guard, averaged 4.8 points and shot 31.6% from three point range, while Michael finished the year as the SCAC leader in blocked shots, swatting away 2.3 attempts per game. Junior guard Jimmy King provides another experienced presence in the backcourt, having appeared in 24 games last season and chipping in 3.2 points-per-game during his sophomore season. Roman Manikowski, who played in 15 games, and Aaron Anwary, who made nine appearances, provide more senior leadership on the perimeter. The sophomore class made an immediate impact last season, with wing player Jeremy Swisher earning All-SCAC honors after averaging 11.5 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting better than 36% from deep. Austin Freet, a 6-foot5 forward, transferred in after the fall semester and wasted little time becoming an impact player. Freet finished the year averaging 8.5 points and 7.9 rebounds in 15 games on his way to earning All-SCAC recognition. Brian Baehl earned the starting nod at point guard last
season, and will be back running the show during his sophomore campaign after averaging 9.5 points and 3.3 assists while shooting a team-best 47.7% from three point range. Alan Sullivan is another sophomore whose contributions grew throughout the season, finishing the year with averages of 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game as a key reserve. Cody Meyers, Josh Dickerman, and Andres Rivera round out last year’s outstanding group of newcomers, while Will Kollet will be suiting up after missing last season. They’ll be joined this season by another deep and talented group, including transfers Cedric Hudson, Eghosa Igbinosa, and Ryan Reibly. Hudson is a 6-foot-4 combo forward, while the 6-foot-8 Igbinosa will help provide a strong presence at the rim, and the 6-foot Reibly will provide yet another weapon on the perimeter. Wecker brought in another talented freshman class to bolster the already deep and athletic squad, including forwards Josh Garrett, Christopher Essien, and John Pass, along with 6-foot-3 guard Josh Quinn. While there is still plenty of youth on this year’s team, one of the key factors carrying over from last season is the depth and experience. Seven players return who started at least three games last season, including five players who started at least 12 games a year ago. With the combination of young talent and veteran experience, along with the team’s tremendous depth, the ‘Roos look poised to contend for the SCAC in 2014-2015.
QUICK NOTES
• The ‘Roos will return two young players that earned AllSCAC Honorable Mention last season, Jeremy Swisher and Austin Freet • Head Coach Rodney Wecker has brought in three transfers and four freshmen to add to the young team, which has only five seniors on the roster of 21 players • Out of the ‘Roos top five scorers from the 2013-2014 season, they will be returning four, with only Ransom Okpala graduating • The ‘Roos led the SCAC in three-point field goals made per game, rebounds per game and blocks per game during the 2013-14 season • Senior post Harry Hampden-Smith returns this season after missing most of last season due to an injury • After the 2013-14 season, the ‘Roos have no qualified for seven straight SCAC postseason basketball tournaments

TIGERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW
34
With the start of the 2014-15 season a little more than a week away, the Colorado College men’s basketball team is making its final preparations for what promises to be an exciting and challenging gauntlet of games. One of the unique nuances of this year’s schedule is the Tigers will play eight consecutive games in the state of Colorado – five at home, two more in Colorado Springs and one in Denver – to begin the season. But during the second half of the campaign, they play nine of their final 15 contests on the road. “Unlike past years, we don’t leave Colorado until late December,” head coach Andy Partee said. “We’re at home two of the first three weekends, which is nice, and the first road trip is across town at UCCS. Travel won’t affect us and the guys will be fresh when we get there.” The slate begins on Nov. 15-16 when CC welcomes Blackburn College, George Fox University and Grinnell College to Reid Arena for the 2014 Colorado College Tip-Off Invitational. The Tigers play host to Blackburn on Friday at 3 p.m. in their first game. The following week, CC begins a run of three consecutive games against Division II foes from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Tigers play Colorado Mesa University and CU-Colorado Springs at UCCS on Nov. 21-22, then make the short trip to Denver to play Regis University on Tuesday, Nov. 25. “It’s nice to play road games close to home, which for us is so unusual,” Partee said. “In doing so, we have to step up and play Division II opponents. It helps us stay within budget while having a challenging schedule.” Colorado College plays host to the University of Northwestern in the Thanksgiving Invitational on Friday, Nov. 28, and then either the Unversity of Dubuque or Willamette University the next day. The first half of the season concludes on Tuesday, Dec. 16 against Johnson & Wales University.
“We have quality DIII opponents coming here to play during the non-conference portion of our schedule,” Parterr said. “We’re not accustomed to having five non-conference home games. It will be nice to have a home-court advantage.” The Tigers finally leave the state for the first time when they fly to Las Vegas to play Clark College and then Willamette for the second time in the D3Hoops.com Classic on Dec. 28 and 30, respectively. Three days later, CC travels to Shreveport, La., to begin its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a pair of games at Centenary College. After the first of three trips to Texas to play Southwestern and Texas Lutheran, Colorado College plays at home for the first time in a month when Austin College and the University of Dallas visit Reid Arena for the two of six SCAC contests at home. The regular season concludes on Feb. 15 when the Tigers play host to TLU. CC will have a week off before heading to the University of Dallas for the conference championship that begins on Feb. 27. “It could be at that point in the year, guys need a break to get healthy,” Partee said. “It gives an opportunity to prepare for an opponent more than just a few days. “You want to keep the momentum going, but sometimes tournament anxiety kicks in. We’ll have to do some creative things that week to stay fresh.” If all goes according to plan, the rested Tigers could be playing for a • The Tigers will begin their conference championseason with a tough schedule, ship and a return to the facing three NCAA Division II NCAA Tournament for opponents, including No. 18 the first time since 2004. ranked UC-Colorado Springs

CRUSADERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW
40
The University of Dallas Men’s Basketball program has plenty to be excited about for the 2014-15 season. Now three seasons after joining the SCAC, Dallas is familiar with the league and looks to be more competitive than ever. With a solid core of returners and a bright incoming recruiting class, the Crusaders have set the stage for a successful campaign. Added depth and a higher level of competitiveness are qualities the coaching staff and players believe will be the difference makers for this year’s squad. “We are looking forward to the season. This team has a great make-up,” says Head Coach, Jarred Samples. “We have a lot of guys returning who have played important minutes for us in the past and a good group of newcomers who bring lots of energy.” The Crusaders return 7 players with significant playing time from last season, 4 of them starters. Seniors Aaron Wyatt, Kym Malone, and Blaine Blackburn return to complete their career at Dallas after laying the foundation the past three years. Senior Mark Promberger makes his return to the hardwood this season after sitting out last year with a torn ACL. Sophomores Tom Kaiser, Michael Sarrat, Lorenzo Gonzalez, and Michael Hampson all logged quality minutes last season and look to build upon that foundation laid by the senior class. Samples adds, “The returners have done a great job of creating a culture that promotes success both on and off
the court. They do things the right way and show are newcomers what it takes to be successful here at the University of Dallas.” Much of the 2014 spring was spent recruiting, the fruits of which have brought the added depth and competitiveness. Rory MacCallum and Bo Nielsen provide a bolstered big man front court. Anthony Johnson and Solomon Berezin have brought tremendous athleticism into the mix. All freshmen, this group will be contenders to be major contributors this year. “We are excited about our class of newcomers. They are not only great basketball players but also great students. They are going to add to our overall depth and have already done a great job of bringing energy and enthusiasm to our team,” Samples says. The Crusaders will play a tough schedule and will be road warriors to begin the season with seven of their first eight games on the road. Dallas tips off in Santa Cruz, CA in the first week of competition facing UC Santa Cruz and the University of the Redlands. UD then travels to fellow SCAC member school, Austin College, for the Bob Mason Classic tipping off against Howard Payne University and Sul Ross State University. The travel continues to Portland, OR for games at Linfield College and Portland Bible College before playing at home on December 3rd.
QUICK NOTES •The Crusaders will return seven players this season, including four starters • Senior Mark Promherger willbe returning after sitting out the 2013-2014 season with an injury • UD has brought in eight freshmen after spending the spring recruiting • In the 2014 SCAC Men’s Basketball Championship, the Crusaders earned the fifth seed after finishing regular season with a conference record of 5-9 • Dallas fell to No. 4 seeded Colorado College in the first round of the 2014 touranment, losing the game 89-81 • Dallas will begin the 2014-15 season on the road, taking on UC-Santa Cruz and Redlands in their first two games

MOUNTAINEERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW
46
Connor Kuykendall is ready. He’s actually been ready for quite a while. Schreiner Men’s Basketball’s new head coach is nothing if not prepared. But he’s also pretty happy because fall practices have finally begun. There is definitely a lot of positive energy flowing around the 2014-15 edition of Schreiner Basketball. The reason is evident. Although big pieces are missing from the most successful season (NCAA era) in SU basketball history (1512 overall, 10-4 in SCAC – 2nd place), even more return. Heading the list of those coming back is senior Steve Guerrero. The do-everything guard from Edinburg is SU’s top returner in points, rebounds, assists and steals and led the team in most of those categories last year on the way to earning All-SCAC recognition. Also back are two more all-league performers in sophomores Wes Miller (San Antonio, TX/Alamo Heights HS) and Maverick Harris (Boerne, TX/ Boerne HS). Miller kept getting better as last year progressed, was fourth on the team in ppg as an inside scoring threat while Harris was one of the deadliest sharpshooters in the SCAC and was third on the team in scoring. But what really could provide the springboard for success this winter is the Mountaineers’ depth at every position. Senior Hollis Robinson (Missouri City, TX/Ft. Bend HS) and sophomore Jared Thompson (San Antonio, TX/Brandeis HS), Phillip Kee (Killeen, TX/Ellison HS) and Dustin Bercutt (Plano, TX/Plano HS) are just a few of the guys who played extensive minutes last year and could be major contributors this time around. As for newcomers, keep an eye on freshmen Keenan Gumbs (Cibolo, TX/Steele HS), Luis
Mancillas (San Juan, TX/PSJA HS) and Blake Kelley (El Paso, TX/Chapin). Gumbs is athletic and can score the basketball while Mancillas gets after it and provides toughness at both ends of the floor. Kelley is very skilled and shoots the ball well for a interior player with his size. Coach Kuykendall on the season ahead: “We have had a good first week of practice and our guys have done a good job of keeping their energy level high and coming to work every day. Our five seniors are doing a good job leading and setting the tone for the younger guys in the program. What makes it exciting for me is everyone is really buying in, helping out their teammates while competing all at the same time.” The Mountaineers have been picked to finish in ____th place in the SCAC this winter. Kuykendall is already ready for the real games to begin and his guys are likely only slightly behind. The season starts off with a cross-country trip to Oregon to face both Pacific and Willamette. The opener is Saturday, November 15th at Pacific. SU’s home opener is the following Saturday against an always-tough Concordia-TX and the SCAC home opener in Friday, January 16, 2015. That day will also be special as it will be the grand opening of Schreiner’s Athletic & Events Center. • Connor Kuykendall will be taking over as Head Coach of the Schreiner Mountaineers after former head coach Jimmy Smith moved to Texas Lutheran University
QUICK NOTES
• The Mountaineers had their most successful NCAA Division III season last year, finishing wih a record of 15-12, overall and earning the No. 3 seed in the SCAC tournament with a record of 10-4 • Schreiner has five seniors on the team this season, but will have one junior, nine sophomores and three freshman • The Mountaineers will open SCAC play in their new facility, the Schreiner Athletic & Events Center against Texas Lutheran, as former head coach Jimmy Smith returns with the Bulldogs

PIRATES 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW
52
It’s a new era for the Southwestern University men’s basketball team as former assistant coach Janson Hightower takes over the Pirates, hoping to lead the team to a conference championship after finishing the 2013-14 season with a record of 8-18 overall, 4-10 in conference play. The Pirates earned the No. 7 seed in the SCAC tournament, but fell to the No. 2 seeded Centenary College in the quarterfinals. Hightower, a former SCAC student-athlete while at Hendrix College, knows what it takes to be successful in the league. After two seasons as an assistant under former head coach Bill Raleigh, Hightower views his move down the bench to the ‘prominent’ seat as more than just an excellent opportunity. It’s the beginning of what he hopes will be a lengthy and successful journey with his new team. “The transition has been pretty smooth. Fortunately, I was able to recruit half of these guys and build a good relationship with the returners that I didn’t necessarily recruit,” Hightower said. Blake Myers is the team’s leading returning scorer and rebounder after the senior forward averaged 8.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game (13th in the SCAC) for the Pirates a season ago. He shot 50.9 percent from the floor (fifth in the SCAC), and his 17 blocks were the sixth-most in the conference in 2013-14. “Everyone seems to be more competitive and we’re really pushing each other,” said Scott. “Now I think we’re just really pushing each other to become the best players we can be.”
There is returning experience in the backcourt as senior guard Eric Garza (5.8 points per game) and Adrian Johnson (4.3 points per game) will both battle for playing time after averaging 18 and 16 minutes of action, respectively, per game last season. Southwestern struggled to score the basketball last season, averaging a league-low 64.0 points per game. The team also struggled at the line, shooting 66.9 percent from the charity stripe which was also last in the SCAC. Another statistic the team needs to vastly improve is assist-to-turnover ratio. The Pirates averaged almost four more turnovers than assists per game a season ago. “Statistically, we need to outrebound opponents and we need a positive assist-to-turnover ratio,” said Hightower. “We also need to shoot better from the free-throw line.” In regards to goals for this year’s team, Hightower makes no apologies for expecting improvement from last year’s seventh-place finish. “Making it to the conference tournament as one of the top five or six teams should be the bear minimum. Ultimately, we want to be one of the top two or three programs in the league and to make it to the championship game. That is what we are shooting for.”
QUICK NOTES • Former Assistant Coach, Janson Hightower, was named the new Head Coach as of August 28, 2014, after 15-year veteran Bill Raleigh stepped down • Hightower has been with the Pirates program since August of 2012, servcing as the assistant men’s basketball coach and assistant golf coach • The Pirates will return senior Blake Scott, who ranked third on the team in scoring last season, averaging 8.9 points per game, and ranked fifth among the SCAC in field goal percentage (50.9%) • Southwestern has brought in five freshman this season, adding to the roster of 19 players.

BULLDOGS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW
58
A new era in Texas Lutheran Men’s Basketball begins as Jimmy Smith takes the reins of the program and leads the team into the 2014-15 season. The Bulldogs open the year on Nov. 15 with a road contest at Top 25 opponent University of Texas at Dallas. TLU’s first home game of the season comes Nov. 18 with a 7:30 p.m. matchup in Memorial Gymnasium with former conference rival Concordia Texas. The Bulldogs and Tornados each played in the American Southwest Conference before TLU joined the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference for 2013-14. The 2014-15 season will be TLU’s second year in the SCAC. Smith comes to Seguin after spending the last two years at the helm of the Schreiner University men’s basketball program, where he led a quick turnaround for the Mountaineers, amassing a 36-37 record in those two years. Before Smith came to Schreiner, the Mountaineers’ record in their Division III era was 92-253 (.270 win pct.). In just his second season, Smith guided Schreiner to its first winning season since joining the NCAA Division III, finishing 15-12 overall and 10-4 in the SCAC. Smith’s squad finished second in the SCAC standings and reached the semifinals of the SCAC Championship. “I’m excited,” Smith said. “I’ve known about TLU for a long time – both as a player playing against them and then coaching against them in the league. I’ve always had a lot of respect for the university. I think there’s a lot of untapped potential, so I’m just trying to get in here, figure out exactly how things work and get things going in the direction I have in my mind, as soon as possible. “I think everyone’s goal is to try and win the conference. I have a lot of familiarity with these guys from coaching against them, so I think that’s the goal. Let’s figure out what we’ve got, figure out who we can add to the group to help us improve and start working toward winning the SCAC Championship.” Last season, Smith’s Mountaineers set school records (NCAAera) for wins (15), winning percentage (.556), conference winning percentage (.714) and points per game allowed (68.9). He also coached the 2013-14 SCAC Co-Player of the Year and SCAC Defensive Player of the Year AJ Myres. “We’re really excited to have Jimmy Smith as the next head coach of the TLU’s men’s basketball program,” TLU Director of Athletics Bill Miller said at the time of Smith’s hiring. “We believe he is the right man at the right time to elevate the program. He is an outstanding fit for both this campus and the community.” Smith inherits a TLU program that finished eighth in the eightteam SCAC in 2013-14. TLU fell in the first round of the SCAC Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs have not had a winning season in men’s basketball since the 2004-05 season, when the Bulldogs went 13-12 overall and 12-10 in the American Southwest Conference. The Bulldogs’
best conference finish of the NCAA DIII-era came in 2003-04, when the Bulldogs were third in the ASC West Division with an overall record of 17-8 and a conference mark of 9-5. The Bulldogs return their top two scorers from 2013-14, in the form of guards Garrett Wilkins (6-1, 170) and Jordan Kouremetis (6-0, 180). Wilkins is a senior guard, and Kouremetis is a sophomore guard. Wilkins (Austin/Connally/Colorado Northwestern CC) has played in all 51 games since transferring to TLU for the 2012-13 season. He has made 46 starts. Wilkins averaged 14 points per game last season and led the team in that category. He was a SCAC Third Team All-Conference selection and finished eighth in the conference in scoring. Kouremetis (San Antonio/O’Connor) earned SCAC Honorable Mention honors in 2013-14 and was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer in conference play, averaging 16.2 points per game. He scored at least 20 points in five games, and all five of those games came in the final 10 games he played. Kouremetis had a late-season injury that forced him to miss the final two weeks of the regular season. He was second on team in overall season scoring, at 13.4 points per game and shot 39.6 percent from the floor and 37.3 percent form the three-point line. He made team-best 47 three-pointers, taking 126 three-point shots, and he shot 84.7 percent from the free throw line. The Bulldogs’ projected starting lineup includes Kouremetis and Wilkins along with sophomore transfer Sterling Holmes (San Antonio/Antonian/Richland College) at point guard, sophomore transfer Zach Behr (Temple/Temple/Schreiner) at forward, and sophomore Michael Davis (Kingwood/Kingwood) at forward. Holmes is a 6-0, 195-pound guard, and Behr and Davis are listed at 6-5 and 190 and 6-4 and 205, respectively. Key reserves Donte McGee (Victoria/Memorial/Texas A&M-Kingsville) and Thomas Verm (Sealy/Sealy) also return. McGee and Verm, both seniors in 2014-15, each played in all 26 games a year ago. The 6-5 and 218-pound McGee averaged 6.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He led the team in blocks, with 24. Verm, at 6-8 and 230 pounds, averaged 7.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in his junior year. Two other players that appeared in every game last season – point guard Joseph Richardson (San Antonio/East Central) and guard Joshua Alderman (Needville/Needville) – also return for the Bulldogs. Richardson made 24 starts and averaged 4.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. He notched 25 steals and 94 assists. Alderman averaged 3.5 points and 0.8 rebounds. He made two starts. The Bulldogs start the season with a roster of 21.
QUICK NOTES • Jimmy Smith will begin the
2014-15 season as the new head coach of the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs after previous head coach Tommy Jones retired in the spring of 2014 • The Bulldogs will return leading scorers Garrett Wilkins and Jordan Kouremetis, who averaged 14 and 16.2 points per game, respectively • The Bulldogs have not had a winning season since 20042005, when they finished 13-12

TIGERS 2014-15 SEASON PREVIEW
64
The 2014-15 edition of the Trinity men’s basketball team will have nine returning players leading the way when the Tigers take the floor November 15 at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Head Coach Pat Cunningham, in his 16th year at the Tigers helm, will also rely on the experience of four players - including two starters - who each put in an average of 18 minutes per game last season. Six players graduated (with three starters), including All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honorees Robert Kitzinger and Zach Lambert. “Right now, our strength is in our perimeter play,” Coach Cunningham said. “We have four returning players who all have logged significant minutes over the past two to three years. How well we play, and what our team strengths are, will depend on this group’s taking over the roles of last year’s seniors.” The two returning starters are senior guards Matt Selling and William Young. Both garnered All-SCAC Honorable Mention recognition. The 6-3, 195-pound Selling averaged 7.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Selling ranked second in the conference in 3-point shooting (45.8 percent), as well as chalking up 24 steals and 12 blocked shots. Young, at 5-10 and 165 pounds, picked up 3.8 points per contest and racked up a Tiger-best 112 assists. (3.9 per game) The previous year, Young set a Trinity single-season assists record (120 total), and now has 308 in his career. Young, who also amassed 24 steals, is in third place on Trinity’s career assists list, and is 48 away from tying the school record. Nationally, Young was ranked 18th in the NCAA Division III in the assists to turnovers ratio (2.73; 112 assists/41 turnovers). Two other players in the “significant minutes and playmakers” category are senior guard Craig Saltarelli, and junior guard Jimmy Clark. The 6-0, 170-pound Saltarelli scored an average of 4.9 points and dished out 92 assists (3.2 per game), while leading the Tigers with 27 steals. Clark, at 6-3, 210 pounds, produced 3.8 points per game, and shot 41.2 percent from the field. All four were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, which recognizes players for academic excellence. Trinity hosted the SCAC Championship, and defeated Texas Lutheran University 78-65 in the quarterfinals, followed by a 64-48 semifinals win over Colorado College.
