A very warm welcome to the first issue of The Scallymag for north Huddersfield – a brand new free magazine for parents, carers and children. The magazine has been operating successfully in neighbouring Calderdale and parts of Lancashire for several years. Now, Huddersfield residents can benefit from it too. As mum to Jonathan, nine, Florence, two and Benjamin, one, I understand how difficult it can be to meet other mums and to find out about groups, activities and events in your local area. The Scallymag’s comprehensive pre-school and out of school diary pages list all sorts of classes from dance to martial arts, gymnastics to drama, which will make it easy for you to meet like-minded parents in your area. Within the magazine, you will regularly find features on days out, interesting articles on local community figures and initiatives, news, information on education and literacy, competitions, recipes and much more. In this issue, you can read about fantastic child-friendly trips to Temple Newsam, Leeds and the beautiful National Trust owned Clumber Park. Now that the theatre season is once again in full swing, why not enter our fabulous competition to be in with a chance of winning a family ticket to see ‘The Three Billy Pigs’ at Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, Halifax, or prepare to snuggle up with a cosy Autumn book by reading our literacy page, put together by the wonderful and knowledgeable staff at The Children’s Bookshop, Lindley. On another note, we’re very proud to announce that this edition of The Scallymag will be supporting the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice as its chosen charity of the year. We will bring you regular updates on the charity’s amazing fundraising efforts with every issue. That leads me neatly on to thanking our advertisers without which it would not be possible to distribute this magazine. I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to them for taking a chance and supporting The Scallymag. Please take note of their valuable input throughout these pages. Compiling this magazine has taken a lot of time and effort and would not have been possible without the help of so many people who have contributed, provided information and offered guidance. Special thanks to my husband and three children for their support, belief and above all, patience. I have endeavoured to make the magazine as accurate, comprehensive and local as possible but if you have an idea or suggestion for content, please do get in touch. The magazine will be published in October, December, March and June. I do hope you enjoy the first issue.

News Olympic torch bearer hopes to inspire children
This year saw Britain host the Olympics with the phenomenal successes of Team GB inspiring generations of sporting youngsters up and down the country. But for Huddersfield’s own Olympic torch bearer, Rebecca Kane, 2012 has also been a defining year in her distinguished sporting history. She said: “When I got off the torch tour bus the atmosphere was amazing! So many people – approximately 40,000 had come out to see the torch go through the town.” Rebecca, who runs the martial arts club, Kane Academy, at Lockwood, Huddersfield, practices a form of martial arts that originates from the Philippines and is five times world
champion, 10 times British champion and two times European champion. In total she has won over 33 national and international top three placings for this type of martial art. Not only that, Rebecca has also competed on the world stage in Irish dancing. To top her outstanding achievements, Rebecca was named the Huddersfield Examiner’s Sports Personality of the Year 2012. Of running with the Olympic torch she said: “The same feelings were present as before a title fight, that combination of nerves and excitement. “I will be keeping my torch so that I can inspire several other young hopefuls as well as those less fortunate to get
involved in sport.” Rebecca has been teaching martial arts and fitness classes for six years, most notably to women who have suffered domestic violence and to children with severe conditions of autism, dyspraxia and Asperger’s Syndrome. Kane Academy, a labour of love for the past four years, is now complete and Rebecca intends to use the facilities to continue her inspirational work and fundraising for a variety of charities including the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice at Fell Greave Road, Huddersfield.
new DANCE show ‘The storybook’
The Audrey Spencer Theatre School of Dance will take to the stage at the Lawrence Batley Theatre for its new show, ‘The Storybook,’ which will bring to life the greatest tales of our time. Performances will take place on Sunday December 2, 2012 at 2pm and 6pm under the direction of Principal, Jo Perkins. It promises to take the audience on a magical journey through fables, fantasies and myths. The school at Queen Street South, Huddersfield, was established over 60 years ago by Audrey Spencer. She retired in 2010 and Jo took over, having returned to work at the school in 2008. Many past pupils have starred in West End productions and gained cruise, television and touring work. Dance training is offered from tots to adults for those wishing to enjoy it as a hobby through to professional standards. Pupils can train for IDTA exams and have the opportunity to be involved in shows and competitions throughout the year.
bonfire night SAFETY
Firefighters are urging parents to keep their children safe this bonfire night by taking them to organised displays only. A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said: “Remember that a sparkler reaches up to 20 times the temperature of boiling water – so parents should also be mindful of the dangers of giving sparklers to children, even at organised events.” Top tips 1. Keep fireworks in a closed metal box
4
2. Read the instructions by torchlight, never a naked flame 3. Light fireworks at arm’s length 4. Stand well back 5. Never go back to a firework once lit 6. Keep a bucket of water handy 7. Douse used fireworks with water, bury or place in a metal container afterwards 8. Always supervise children 9. Keep pets indoors 10. Always follow the firework code

his year will no doubt be remembered as one of the wettest on record. But despite the downpours, we were blessed with a gorgeous, warm, sunny day when we ventured out to one of West Yorkshire’s best known stately homes - Temple Newsam. A riot of colour is what awaits at Temple Newsam with its acres of parkland, walled garden, woodland glades and ornamental lake. Each time we’ve made the 30 minute trip in Spring, Summer and Autumn, we’ve been lucky and enjoyed glorious sunshine which has made the outdoors all the more appealing. Greeted by the first blossoms of March, vibrant pinks and purples in August or the golden hues of Autumn, Temple Newsam boasts fabulous natural surroundings and gardens landscaped by Capability Brown. From beautiful wild flower meadows and bridleways to the more formal gardens, my nine-year-old and two-year-old were happy to explore for hours. Although there was some uphill walking involved, I found the paths easy to navigate even with a tandem buggy from which my one-yearold enjoyed the scenery and fresh air. Temple Newsam is a great place to enjoy a family picnic and the little ones can be kept entertained with ball games on the many grassed areas, feeding the ducks, jumping on the seasonal bouncy castle or visiting the animals at the rare breed farm, for which there is a small charge, though children under five go free. The adventure playground was a big hit with all three of my children and offered something for all ages from baby swings for the little ones, smaller slides and roundabouts suitable for toddlers and young children to an expansive climbing frame and zip slide for older kids. And when they’ve expended enough

energy, ice creams are available at small kiosks in the car park with tea and coffee for mums and dads. But if the great British weather is not so kind to you, don’t be put off, there is still lots to see and do. For a small charge you can venture inside the great Tudor-Jacobean mansion which has frequently been described as one of the best stately homes in Britain. Famed for being the birth place of Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary Queen of Scots, it’s ideal if you would like to fuel your child’s interest in history. Quizzes and trails are available for families and the various exhibitions are often accompanied by craft activities and special events. Until November 11, 2012, you can discover Temple Newsam’s real-life fairy tales and take the Prince and Princess Quiz. If it isn’t picnic weather, you can always head to the Courtyard Tea Rooms which serves the estate’s own rare breed sausages and burgers as well as freshly baked scones and cake. There is also a gift shop with an extensive range of goods designed for both children and adults. The house, farm and tea rooms are open every day except Mondays during term time. Facilities are open during school holidays and on bank holidays but check the website for full details prior to travelling. By Elaine Jinks

Win Family Ticket To ‘The Three Billy Pigs’ The Scallymag has teamed up with Square Chapel Centre for the Arts to offer you the chance to win a family ticket to see ‘The Three Billy Pigs’. Performed by Noisy Oyster Theatre Company, the show blends together the two classic fairy tales of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ using beautifully crafted puppets, light hearted storytelling, live music and a little bit of eco-awareness. It sees the three little pigs setting off to build their perfect homes which are then put to the test by a wolf. But who is the grumpy person who lives under the bridge? All will be revealed as the magical tale unfolds. Suitable for children aged three and above, the performance, which will take place on October 28, lasts 45 minutes –

School admissions made easy
hoosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever make as a parent and the task can feel daunting.
Let The Scallymag give you a helping hand by guiding you through the minefield of information you need to consider when applying for a full-time school place in Kirklees. First of all, it is important to read up about the schools you are interested in and if possible, visit them – many hold open days where you can view the facilities and speak to the staff. Things you may wish to ask include: What procedure does the school use to settle a new child in to the daily routine? What is the homework policy? How involved are parents in supporting the curriculum at home? What school events can you become involved in as a parent? Are morning or after school clubs available? In Kirklees, you only need to complete one common application form to apply for any three schools.
Appeal for old uniformS Bag it, don’t bin it! That’s the message that Uniform Exchange is sending parents in a bid to encourage them to recycle their children’s old school uniform by passing it on to other families in Huddersfield. The organisation was set up in 2011 by Kate France after she watched the BBC documentary ‘Poor Kids’ and was determined to make a real difference to the lives of local families – particularly those not in receipt of a school uniform grant. To date, Uniform Exchange has helped over 50 families by providing them with school uniform, PE kits, coats and shoes. Esther Lee, Kate’s sister, who volunteers with Uniform Exchange,

Focus on SCHOOLS
There are five types of school including community or voluntary controlled, voluntary aided, academies and trust schools. Depending on which school you apply for, either Kirklees Council or the school governors decide who gets a place. To qualify for a place, the admissions authority, takes into consideration a number of criteria which can differ for each school. It can include proximity to the school, whether there are already siblings in attendance and in the case of some church schools, whether the child is a practising member of that faith. It is advisable to list three schools in order of preference just in case your first choice is not available. You should also be realistic. For example, your chances of obtaining a place at a school a long way from where you live may well be less than at a school nearer to home. You can make your application online by visiting https://enrol.kirklees. gov.uk/enrol/ which also means you do not need to wait to find out if your child has been offered a place at your preferred school as you can view the
offer online or opt to receive an email. The application process for school places beginning in September 2013 is already open. The closing date is January 15, 2013. Offers will be made on April 16, 2013. If your child is transferring to junior or middle school then online applications open on November 5, 2012 with a deadline of January 15, 2013. Offers will be made on April 16, 2013. For secondary school application, the application process is already open and the closing date is October 31, 2012. Offers will be made on March 1, 2013. If you are refused a place at your preferred school, you do have the right to appeal. For community and voluntary controlled schools, contact the admissions team at Kirklees Council. For voluntary aided, free, academy and trust schools, contact the school direct for information on the appeals procedure. Appeal hearings will take place in June and July2013.
said: “Families around Huddersfield have been very generous with their uniform donations. It is great to see a community helping each other. “The Sure Start Children’s Centres around Huddersfield are our main drop off points and we are very grateful to them for their support.” Jumpers, cardigans, blazers, trousers, skirts, pinafores, dresses, shorts, shirts, PE kits, coats, shoes, socks, hats and gloves are taken, regardless of their condition. Its only source of income is from the sale of rags – clothes in too poor a condition to be passed on. All other items are given to families but Uniform Exchange desperately needs donations of old and used uniform to replenish its stock. Uniform Exchange, which operates out of temporary premises at Firth Street, Huddersfield, thanks to the kindness of Olympus Technologies Ltd, also works with One Good Turn, a
charity with a similar aim of helping Huddersfield families by recycling clothing, home furnishings and baby equipment. School uniform is also donated by Oxfam. If your children have outgrown their uniform, why not help another family? Items marked ‘Scallymag Uniform Drive’ can be dropped off at local Sure Start Children’s Centres, or at the Cathedral Charity Shop, Brook Street, Huddersfield. A complete list can be found at www.uniformexchange.org. You can also help by spreading the word at your children’s school, putting up posters or volunteering with the organisation. If you’re in need of school uniform, you can visit the website and download an application form.

These diary pages are the heart of The Scallymag; the main reason the magazine exists and probably the most useful part for parents and carers. We aim to list as many activities for 0-5 year olds in the area. We do our best to ensure the information is up-to-date (there will probably be some changes every issue). However we are not infallible. If you know of any changes, or of any new groups or courses that should be included, please get in touch by using any of the contact details on page 3. Listing in this section is FREE.

features Benefits of a baby sling A sling is rarely on the list of essentials when you are expecting your first baby, yet it should be right up there with nappies and baby-grows. During your pregnancy, your baby has been nestled in a cosy place where they can hear and smell you. When they are born, the world can seem daunting, if not scary. That is why a sling is important as it allows them to be held in a comforting embrace from which they can begin to learn about the world around them. Huddersfield Sling Library is a not for profit organisation with over 50 slings and carriers available for loan. Run by Yolanda Kenyon, a British Association of Babywearing instructor and a group of volunteer mums, it aims to find the right sling for you and your baby or child. The benefits of using a baby sling are endless. Babies held in slings cry
50% less, they help to establish breast feeding, relieve colic, reduce the chance of flat head syndrome, and minimise the risk of postnatal depression. Yolanda said: “You don’t have to worry about steps, shopping, nipping from the car to the post office, how many prams are already on the bus, getting a space on the train, or walking in the woods. Slings can get your life back to normal in a way prams just can’t.” At 16 weeks, a baby’s appetite to learn develops and a sling supports their curiosity by involving them in conversation and enabling them to observe your facial expressions. “There is no need to stop holding your baby close as they grow,” said Yolanda. “Teething babies need endless cuddles and babies who are beginning to explore and move away from you enjoy the extra security that extended cuddle time in a sling offers them – its a
safe place to come back to after a busy day exploring. “Slings can help calm an over tired toddler when their newly developed hormones overwhelm them.” All slings held by the library hold babies in the anatomically optimal position with support for the head, spine, hips and legs. Open sling library sessions are held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Nightingale pub, Lidget Street, Lindley, from 10am – 12pm and on the fourth Friday of each month at Active Bodies, Chapel Street, Off Chapel Hill, Huddersfield from 1pm to 3.30pm. Here you can try out the slings and hire them for a small charge. A deposit in the form of a cheque is required. Private one to one consultation can be arranged. For further information visit www.slinglibrary.com.

ince becoming a parent the natural instinct to protect my children has always been present. But as my eldest son, now nine, began to develop his sense of adventure, I was keen to encourage his need to explore the world around him and determined not to wrap him in cotton wool.
This year, the National Trust launched a major campaign to promote the great outdoors to children in order to ensure that the valuable childhood experiences older generations take for granted are not lost on today’s kids. Its Natural Childhood report highlighted that increased traffic congestion and ‘stranger danger’ were reasons why we, as parents, were keeping our children locked indoors and allowing them to cultivate friendships with the television and games consoles instead. As a result, the 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ initiative was born and so was our family membership of the National Trust. Clumber Park was once the estate of the Dukes of Newcastle and although the grand house was demolished in the last century, you can still glimpse pieces of its history with the gothic style chapel and walled kitchen garden, for which there is a small charge for adults. However, the real beauty of Clumber Park lies in the 3,800 acres of wide open parkland, heath, woods, gardens and lake which you can access completely free-of-charge, except for parking which costs £5.80 per

vehicle, though is free to National Trust members. Living on a busy main road, we always struggled to find a reasonably flat, lengthy circular route where our son could ride his bike safely, away from the dangers that narrow pavements and heavy traffic presented. Clumber Park was the answer. Admittedly, it does take about an hour to drive there but is well worth the trek. While our son is able to race off along the main track, the little ones, aged two and one, can enjoy toddling along at a leisurely pace or being pushed round on a ride-along. Adults can take bikes along too or they can hire them there at a cost of £7.20 for two hours or £14.40 for a full day. Tandems, buggies, child seats and trailer bikes are also available at the Cycle Hire Centre. With over 20 miles of cycle routes, you’ll be spoilt for choice! Clumber Park is magnificent all the year round but my favourite time to visit is on a clear, crisp Autumn day. Nothing quite beats wrapping up warm and heading off round the lake where you can appreciate the full array of colours the season has to offer. As if there weren’t enough trees for kids to climb, there’s also a woodland play park and The Burrow Play Centre for those up to the age of six and soft play for children under three, which we haven’t visited yet. On warm days, take a picnic and then feed the ducks, swans and wild birds on the lake. When the weather is
chillier, we like to head to the cafe where there is a family room. On several occasions we’ve been able to manoeuvre a tandem buggy inside here, even on busy days, and highchairs, a bottle warmer, a microwave and a children’s menu are available. Upstairs, you will find baby changing facilities which we prefer as they are warmer to the ones located in the outdoor toilet block. Quiz trails, lasting between 30 minutes and two hours, are available and for tired little legs, you can cut the walking short by taking the ferry across the lake. It operates on weekends and during school holidays. Orienteering packs, horse riding permits and coarse fishing are also available at a charge and during October you can view Playful Landscape contemporary art in the grounds. Special events, walks and workshops take place at Clumber Park all the year round but ones to watch out for this season include the Apple Festival on October 20 and 21, the Pumpkin Trail from October 27 to November 4 and the Haunted Evening on October 31, 2012. We’ve always enjoyed visiting Clumber Park but have probably only managed to see a small part of it as of yet. I look forward to exploring the rest as my kids grow up, watching them tick off the 50 things on their lists. By Elaine Jinks

NEWS
Florence the Friendship Fairy by Daisy Meadows (£5.99) The Rainbow Magic series is suitable from age six upwards and has captured the imaginations of many girls.
