A warm welcome to the Winter issue of The Scallymag, packed full of useful information for parents and carers of children aged 0-11 across north Huddersfield. In this issue, you can read all about the fantastic work the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, our chosen charity for the year, does at Christmas time and how you can help. NOT JUST MODELS, WE’RE ROLE MODELS!

ow often do you see positive pictures of people with autism or Down’s syndrome in the media? Not often is the answer.

The calendar, which celebrates a range of models from eight months to 18 years, costs £9.99 plus postage and packing and can be ordered via Shabang’s website at

Businesses and high street stores don’t regularly choose children with disabilities or additional learning needs to model their goods. Shabang - a performance double act consisting of Kim Reuter and Russ Elias, who work with children with special educational needs, are seeking to challenge attitudes with their new 2013 calendar. The calendar, which will raise money for the Lottery funded initiative, features youngsters involved in Shabang theatre projects. Kim said: “We see the children in the calendar as much more than models – they are role models. Images of people with additional learning needs are few and far between in the media or in educational resources. So, we thought it was about time a positive, happy collection of photographs was produced and a calendar seemed to be the ideal vehicle to bring a series of images together.”

GET Ahead at school Your kids may enjoy writing letters to Santa or counting down the days to Christmas but once the holidays are here, it’s easy to let literacy and numeracy skills slip. Stephen and Judith Uttley, who specialise in English and Maths tuition at NumberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield, are full of bright ideas on how to encourage your child amid all the excitement. They suggest getting crafty by making a calendar to support both literacy and numeracy skills. Stephen said: “A New Year means a new calendar. Birthdays are often the first thing that go on to a calendar and familiar names are often the first thing that children recognise and learn to write. “Mark your calendar with all the birthdays you can think of. Include neighbours, pets, teachers and anyone or anything that will have meaning for your child.” Calendars provide an opportunity to use ordinals as well as recognising numerals. Talking about the first, second, third day of the month and so on will support your child’s numeracy skills. “Mark events onto your calendar so that it doubles as a diary,” suggests Stephen, “Being able to look both back and forwards, reading things like ‘went to library’ or ‘played with Sam’ helps your child develop the concept of sequences and timelines. Calendars used like this give frequent opportunity for discussion of before, after, tomorrow, yesterday and next week.” Using the calendar often will help and older children will benefit from being able to name all of the months in order and knowing how many days are in each month. Finally, refer to the calendar for upcoming birthdays which can prompt card making to support literacy whilst a countdown to the event will support numeracy and enable your child to grasp the concept of time.

Bridge Street, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, and for several years have been working with children with a diverse range of disabilities from across Kirklees. They met while working at a theatre company in Leeds but decided to set up Shabang which fused their performance and musical skills. Both are qualified teachers and their shows and workshops use Makaton signing, sensory objects and songs which they write themselves. Shabang holds Little Tiddlers pre-school sessions for children with additional needs on Wednesday and Thursday from 10.30am to 1pm. Day Dreamers Family Club sessions for children under 14 on the autistic spectrum are held on Saturday from 10.30am – 1pm. Dream Catchers Family Club sessions for children under 14 with additional needs take place on Sunday from 2pm to 4.30pm. The premises is equipped with a multi sensory room, an area for holistic massage and as well as interactive performances, children can benefit by taking part in craft activities. YOUNG POETS

Hipperholme Grammar School pupils were treated to a poetry workshop with Yorkshire writer, James Nash. Working with year seven students, his aim was to encourage an appreciation of poetry. Head of English, Adrienne Settle, said: “They once again proved themselves to be exceptionally creative and enthusiastic about poetry and behaved impeccably throughout the day.” The students were encouraged to consider the story behind objects to inspire their own writing before presenting their poems to the group. Following the workshop, the school at Bramley Lane, Hipperholme, held its annual poetry competition, to coincide with National Poetry Day. Winners received a certificate and first prize winners, Ben Cooper, Grace Miller, Mollie Rose and Polly Carter, were presented with a book token. James Nash has been involved in delivering reading workshops and setting up reading groups across the region for many years. He was reader in residence for Kirklees libraries for three years, is still involved in reading and writing development as a trainer and currently holds the posts of writer in residence at Calderdale Council and at the University of Leeds. His previous contributions include ‘Deadly Sensitive’, ‘In Transit’, ‘Coma Songs’, ‘Four Fathers’ and ‘BranchLines’, a poetry anthology which includes the likes of Seamus Heaney and Andrew Motion, the former Poet Laureate.

f you’re planning a trip to see Father Christmas then look no further than Harewood House for a festive family day out.

Harewood House, home of the Lascelles family since it was built in the mid 1700s, is arguably the jewel in Yorkshire’s crown so far as stately homes go. The seat of the Earl and Countess of Harewood, the Georgian mansion, which houses interiors by Robert Adams, paintings by the Italian masters and the largest commission of Chippendale furniture, was awarded designated museum status in 1998. In recent years, we’ve taken the children to Harewood each December for their annual meeting with the man with the big white beard and two years ago during a particularly long spell of snow, making it all the more magical. Festive events at the estate vary from year to year but in the past have included a Christmas market, donkey rides, a funfair, a road train, crafts and children’s theatre. This year, on weekends beginning November 24th through to December 16th, children can enjoy meeting Father Christmas by the fireside for storytelling sessions.

Children will receive a gift and there are opportunities to be photographed but tickets need to be booked in advance by calling the box office on 0113 218 1000. Be sure to wrap up warm if you visit as there is lots to see and do outdoors. The biggest hit with my eldest was the adventure playground, he would have quite happily played there for hours if it weren’t so cold. As well as exploring the expansive gardens, landscaped by Capability Brown, and pathways, you can also visit the bird garden and book to feed the penguins! But if the weather gets the better of you, you can head indoors to The Courtyard Cafe with its seasonal offerings and children’s menu. Be warned though, it can get very crowded at lunchtimes, there is little room to manoeuvre buggies and you may have to wait for a highchair. The house may be more interesting for older children but staff are often on hand with trails and quizzes or to answer questions from curious little ones. For fans of the ITV1 series, “Downton Abbey,” you’ll enjoy exploring the house, imagining yourself as Lady Mary. Though, perhaps, I’d be more suited as Daisy the kitchen maid as for me, downstairs is where Harewood House really gets interesting. In particular, the preserve room – an

entire room dedicated to jam making – now I could spend all day in there! The kitchens speak volumes of what life was like in servitude in the 19th and early 20th centuries and reading about the characters that worked at Harewood help to bring history to life. Children will enjoy the craft activities on offer such as Christmas biscuit decorating or dressing up in traditional costumes. If you do visit the house though, I would advise using a baby sling to get around with little ones as there are lots of stairs and buggies can be difficult, particularly if you’re on your own and don’t have another pair of hands to help out. My only criticism of Harewood would be the baby changing facilities as in mid December it can get very cold for tiny babies in a converted stable with little heating. Other than that, Harewood House is a great day out. By Elaine Jinks

life care, and practical and emotional support in a bid to ease the strain life limiting conditions can bring on all family members. It aims to be a home from home for poorly children and is equipped with a sensory room, a state-of-the-art music facility, a hydrotherapy pool, The Snowflake Suite, which is a selfcontained flat for families, and much more to make a child’s time there the best that it can be. Its Hospice at Home service currently supports over 50 families and it is hoped when the brand new facility opens its doors, care can be extended to many more. Currently, 700 children in Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield are in need of support and there are many ways in which you can help. Vicki Finlay, Director of Care, said: “We will be welcoming children and families into the hospice in the near future to offer the special care and respite they need. Our focus is to ease stress and create shared experiences and opportunities for special memories that can always be cherished. “What we need now is your continued support to help us cover the on going cost of care at Christmas both at the hospice and through our Hospice at Home service. Our fundraising team have pulled together some fun ideas for Christmas activities to help you get involved and help raise the important funds we need.” If you’re a chocoholic, then the Christmas Chube Challenge is for you.

The charity is seeking supporters to fill empty chocolate tubes with either 20p pieces or £1 coins. A tube of 20p pieces can pay for one complimentary therapy session and a tube of £1 coins can pay for an hour of specialist play in the hydrotherapy pool. The charity’s One Special Gift Campaign provides an opportunity to help the hospice via one of its 11 charity shops. Simply take one good quality item, whether that is clothing, a toy, a piece of furniture or anything else, along to your local hospice store for them to sell. Your gift will help improve the quality of merchandise available, boost sales and raise the profile of the shops. On December 3, it is Purple Pound Day where you can take £1 to work or school to show your support for the hospice while hosting a dress down day. PREGO – THE PERFECT PLACE TO EAT AND PLAY!

y children are not naughty. They are, however, children and behave as such whether we’re out in public or not.

Jonathan, aged nine, is a picky eater, Florence, aged two, is prone to temper tantrums if she doesn’t get her own way and Benjamin, aged one, thinks it’s perfectly acceptable to throw food, drink and cutlery on the floor in order to tell you he’s had enough. Because of that, eating out with my children tends to fill me with a sense of foreboding. I know in advance that I’ll spend the entire time trying to persuade them to eat quietly and worrying what everyone else in the restaurant is thinking about my lack of parenting skills. If this sounds all too familiar, don’t despair, Prego Italian Cafe Bar and Restaurant offers a completely different experience which will leave you and your little ones far less stressed. Every Sunday between 12pm and 6pm, the restaurant at Huddersfield Road, Brighouse, offers Prego Play, especially designed for families with children. Instead of fussing over unsettled kids that are strapped into highchairs or made to stay put at the table for

fear of knocking an unfortunate waiter flying with a soufflé, they can occupy themselves with games and toys in a secure, designated space next to the dining area. The room, which is staffed by two helpers, is close enough that parents can pop in and out to check on their children and the kids can easily find their own way back to the table. To keep them entertained, face painting is offered along with dressing up costumes, an area to colour in and a flat screen TV playing children’s classics. Back at the table children up to the age of 12 are provided with their own menu with two courses costing just £6.75 and three courses for £8.50. Choices include traditional favourites such as pizza, pasta, fish and chips or sausage and mash to more healthy options such as grilled chicken breast or salmon. Jonathan opted for barbecue spare ribs followed by a pepperoni pizza while the younger two shared a Sunday roast – one portion of which had more than enough roast beef for them both. The highlight for our eldest was a visit to the chocolate fountain which undoubtedly is a big hit with all kids who visit Prego Play. My husband had tortina di pesce misto – mixed fish and potato cake

to start. I had minestrone soup and we both ordered the delicious, filling Sunday roast which was rounded off with two lattes. One of the best things about Prego is that families are seated next to the Prego Play area, while guests wanting a quieter meal are seated at the other side of the restaurant, meaning they get to enjoy their meal too and you don’t have to feel guilty if your children get a little noisy. The restaurant, which is part of the Waterfront Lodge Hotel, is managed by Vittorio Piliu, and forms part of a small, family owned group of businesses. What struck us most is that the customer service is outstanding – it’s always nice if restaurant staff make a fuss of your children, but at Prego, it seems to be routine, which adds to the relaxing atmosphere and allows parents to enjoy their meal as well. Every Sunday until December 23, 2012 Santa will be visiting Prego Play between 1pm and 2pm. Prego is open seven days a week and offers a unique dining experience with or without children. ith the sight of Spitfires on the tarmac and the sound of The Glenn Miller Orchestra playing ‘Moonlight Serenade’ drifting across the airfield, it’s easy to allow yourself to be transported back to 1940s Britain at the Yorkshire Air Museum.

Situated outside York, it takes about an hour’s drive to get there. It was a chilly day when we visited and with many of the exhibits being outdoors, be sure to wrap up warm – sadly it was not vintage tea dress weather! RAF Elvington was rebuilt in 1942 and became part of ‘42 Base’ whose airmen played a vital role in destroying German industry during World War II, with 77 Squadron taking part in the Battle of the Ruhr. When 77 Squadron moved, Elvington became host to two French Squadrons which took part in a major bomber offensive against enemy forces. Whilst at Elvington, 77 Squadron, comprising British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand airmen, lost 82 aircraft and 450 crew – more than half their fatalities during the entire war. After the war, Elvington had many uses including aircraft maintenance and training. Most notably in 1952 it became part of the expansion programme for the US Strategic Air Command to deliver their nuclear deterrent. The museum had begun to establish itself in a limited form in 1986. Elvington finally closed in 1992 and was sold by the Ministry of Defence in 1999, when it

began to open daily as a museum. If like my eldest son, you find your children studying World War II as their school topic, then the Yorkshire Air Museum is the place to visit. There are few places that can truly bring history alive for a nine-year-old, but the sight of a Halifax Bomber is one of them. And of course if that’s not enough, then reading about Sir Barnes Wallis, designer of the bouncing bomb used by the Dambusters during their 1943 mission is the stuff of legend. The museum will certainly fuel a child’s curiosity and imagination. On returning home, my son went on to read ‘War Stories for Boys’ by Chris Priestley, Bryan Perrett and Jim Eldridge and enthusiastically watched a series about the Dambusters. Wallis – the visionary aircraft designer - forms part of the amazing ‘Pioneers of Aviation’ exhibition which also details the contributions of many other famous Yorkshire aviators such as Sir George Cayley, internationally acknowledged father of aeronautics and Amy Johnson, the first female to fly solo to Australia and Russia. You may be mistaken in thinking

that the museum is purely a tribute to World War II. Indeed, that is where its rich history lies, but it offers so much more than that with pre and post World War II aircraft, historic vehicles, uniform collections and interactive displays. Although older children will certainly benefit more from the experience, my toddler was quite happy to climb in and out of the display aircraft and for several weeks afterwards her new favourite word was ‘plane.’ There is a restaurant and museum shop on site, neither of which we sampled, as we were heading on to a farmer’s market. Admission is £8 for adults, £4 for children and under fives are free. Family tickets for up to two adults and three children are available for £22. The museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm but always check prior to travelling. If you want to spark your child’s imagination and encourage them to learn about an important part of not only British, but Yorkshire history, then The Yorkshire Air Museum is a grand day out! Alison Whitwam, who runs the business, said: “We have a relaxing cafe serving home made food and tasty snacks as well as speciality teas and coffees and cold drinks. “You can have your party at Wonderland with budgets to suit everyone. We can also host special events such as christenings and baby showers.” A host of activities are available including a toddler group which meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 11.30am. A qualified nursery teacher runs structured themed classes featuring singing, crafts, stories and a snack for £3 per child, £1 per baby and 50p per extra child. ‘Fantasies and Fairy Tales in Wonderland’ takes place on Monday and Wednesday at 2pm and Songbirds classes are
