Do you remember the cherry blossom in the market square? Do you remember I thought it was confetti in our hair?”
Accepted, we may not all be old enough to remember Marillion lyrics but cherry trees – love them or loathe them - there’s no doubt that the sight of pale pink blossom is a sure sign that spring is in the air. At the National Trust owned Beningbrough Hall and Gardens just outside of York, the unmistakeable blossom carpets the ground at this time of year and coupled with the first spring buds, provides a great enticement to head outdoors with the children. Beningbrough Hall is a Georgian mansion built in 1716. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1958 following the death of the Countess of Chesterfield, who from 1916 spent many years restoring the property which had fallen into disrepair. It boasts a dramatic Baroque interior and nowadays houses a substantial collection of paintings from the National Portrait Gallery dating from between 1688 to 1760. Recently shortlisted for a Kids in Museums Award and a previous Guardian Family Friendly Museum finalist, Beningbrough offers more than the average stately home for children. In partnership with the National Portrait Gallery there is an interactive play gallery and family workshops and craft activities inspired by the paintings are held regularly. However, if the weather is mild then head to the recently extended wilderness play area situated along a winding path through the trees. Kids of any age will quite happily spend hours dreaming up their own imaginative games of knights amidst the large fortress.

You can also while away the hours wandering through the extensive gardens, most of which are easily accessible with a buggy. In the walled garden you can relax on one of the many benches and enjoy an ice cream from the kiosk while children make use of the outdoor toys provided such as hula hoops, balls and giant building blocks. To be fair, it doesn’t take much to amuse my two-year-old and she spent the best part of an hour picking handfuls of daisies on the grass. She was also quite taken with the cows in a nearby field; they, in turn, were equally intrigued by her. As with the vast majority of National Trust properties, baby changing facilities are available and hip-carrying infant seats can be loaned, making it much easier to view the house and its paintings with little ones. At Beningbrough Hall you can also find a restaurant, though we didn’t sample its seasonal produce, much of which I am told is grown on site, as we had already eaten. It is open Tuesday until Sunday from now until the end of June. In the summer months it is open every day before reverting to its Tuesday to Sunday timetable from September. Opening hours are limited to weekends during the winter months. If you are a National Trust member then entry is free. If not, a standard family ticket costs £20.75 or individual tickets cost £8.30 for adults and £4.15 for children. Beningbrough Hall hosts many events throughout the year so do check the website prior to visiting. It may also give your kids the chance to tick a couple of activities off their 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ list. By Elaine Jinks
NEWS School Honours Heroic Headmaster Hipperholme Grammar School has paid tribute to a past headmaster who was killed during World War I. Captain Maynard Percy Andrews, who left his post at the school at Bramley Lane, Hipperholme, to serve his country, lost his life in 1915 while attempting to save his wounded men. Current headteacher, Jack Williams, said: “As we approach the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of the First World War we have been working with local genealogy experts to research Captain Andrews’ life and trace his family. Captain Andrews’ entire life story is full of inspiration.” At a special reception hosted at the school, staff, governors, former pupils and community figures were joined by members of Captain Andrews’ family. On display were letters sent to Captain Andrews’ widow, Charlotte, following his death. Captain Andrews was Oxford educated but unable to complete his studies due to ill health resulting from Typhoid which he contracted as a child. Instead, he left England to become a
cowboy in the Rocky Mountains, returning once the mountain air had relieved him of his heart conditions. He was awarded his MA in 1889. He then travelled to France and Germany before taking up the post of teacher of modern languages at Leicester, Bolton and Lancing College between in 1908. At Lancing College he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Officer Training Corps and in 1911 he was appointed headmaster at Hipperholme Grammar School. The same year he joined the 1/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (West Riding) in Halifax and was promoted to Lieutenant and then to Captain in October 1914. He was sent to France in April 1915 as second in command of A Company and was followed in to battle by both former and then current pupils of the school. He was killed four months later. Mr Williams said: “The rediscovery of his many accomplishments is the beginning of a project to contact former pupils and gather their stories regarding their achievements after they left the
school. “While Captain Andrews’ story is remarkable, we know there will be many more wonderful examples of feats and triumphs by our alumni which we are keen to hear about.” The school, which will introduce its first fully funded place in September as part of its scholarship scheme, is keen for former pupils to get in touch and tell them about their lives since they left. Cash boost for playgroup A pre-school has received a £1,000 cash boost to develop an outdoor learning environment for toddlers. Slaithwaite Playgroup and Toddlers received the money from the Yorkshire Building Society to transform a small piece of overgrown land into an educational outdoor area where toddlers can plant fruit and vegetables, explore biodiversity and learn about the world around them. Supervisor, Clare Norman said: “Thanks to this generous donation from the YBS Charitable Foundation, we will have the unique opportunity for a toddler group where the children will be able to extend their learning to the outdoor environment, grow food and develop an understanding of recycling and composting. “Our aim will be for the children and their parents and carers to develop a caring confidence with the outdoor environment.” The pre-school had already conducted a review to identify changes to help the environment and save money. Recycling is one of the biggest changes implemented and the playgroup is now working towards the eco-schools scheme bronze award.

HEALTH Have You Had Your Smear Test? Life Saving Benefits of Having a Smear Test It might not be the most pleasant of experiences but regular cervical screening – or smear tests as some people call them – prevent three out of four cervical cancers from ever developing. This is because any changes to the skin cells in your cervix (the bit inside near your womb) can be found and treated before they develop into cervical cancer. So if you get a letter asking you to book your test, it’s worth doing it straight away. Even if you had your letter a while ago you can still have the test – just ring up your doctor’s surgery and they will discuss it with you. The test is free on the NHS and if you are aged 25 and over you will get a letter sent to you every three years inviting you to have the test, which is usually done by a nurse at your doctor’s surgery. Dr Mercy Vergis, cervical screening lead for Kirklees, said: “It is vitally important that you attend an appointment when you receive one. Women can sometimes be put off attending a test because they may feel uncomfortable, or they may be worried about the outcome of the test. However, it really is the best way to prevent cancer before it develops. “We’re asking the close relatives of the women we’re targeting – primarily mothers, but also aunts, sisters and cousins, to encourage them to take the test. Their support can positively influence their loved ones and ensure the best possible wellbeing for them.

FOCUS ON Get How often do you make a conscious effort to go green, recycle waste and buy fairtrade products that in turn help the environment, communities and improves the quality of life for people within them? “Not as often as I should”, is probably the answer closely followed by, “I’m only one person, what difference can I make to the planet?” That is exactly the attitude which fairandfunky, a recently established community interest company operating in and around Huddersfield, is seeking to challenge.
Helen Robinson, who set up the business with Sophie Bebb, said: “We both strongly believe anybody can make a difference. Everybody is just one person but if all those people do something, the result is enormous.” Fairandfunky, which works with schools, runs community workshops and sells a wide range of fairtrade products at pop-up shops across the district and
During Fairtrade Fortnight via their online store, hopes Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from February 25 to March 10, will provide families with the motivation and encouragement to get involved. On March 9, the pair will host a fairtrade family fun day at Holmfirth Market Hall from 10am to 4pm and Helen said: “It will provide a great introduction to what we do as it is for the whole family.” The fun day will include free workshops which will concentrate on recycled crafts, cupcake decorating and seed planting. There will also be games, singing and stalls selling fairtrade and ethical gifts from the fairandfunky range and from Not Just A Trading Company. Fairandfunky, which only sells recycled, fairly traded or organic products, was set up after the pair collaborated together during the 2011 Holmfirth Arts Festival to put five pianos in the street, decorated in global themes. They realised they both had a passion for making a positive difference to the environment and the world at large. Fairandfunky plans to expand its recycled craft workshops throughout Huddersfield. They are currently held regularly at Holmfirth Methodist Church and Avid Farm Shop in Millhouse Green, Sheffield, but Helen and Sophie would like to hear from any interested schools,
Do ‘One Good Thing’ To Support Poorly Children
T
he Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice has launched its ‘One Good Thing’ campaign and The Scallymag is urging its readers to support the charity in 2013 by getting involved.
The hospice, at Russell House, Fell Greave Road, Huddersfield, helps children with life limiting conditions, and their families, across Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield and is calling on communities to come together to do their ‘One Good Thing.’ Supporting the campaign can include organising a fundraising event, joining the Purple Posse by taking part in an adrenaline fuelled activity such as a
skydive or signing your business up to the 99er scheme. Peter Branson, Chief Executive of the hospice, said: “As a children’s hospice offering care to such a wide area, it is imperative that everyone knows that we are here for them. “We believe that the ‘One Good Thing’ campaign isn’t just a great fundraising idea, but also a great way to communicate our message to a large audience.” All 11 of the Forget Me Not stores across West Yorkshire have taken on board the ‘One Good Thing’ campaign, encouraging people to donate a quality item. So far, items have included a range
churches or community groups such as Scouts and Guides. The workshops cover three key themes of recycling, the environment and fairtrade and range from creative art to debates, role-playing to junk-modelling. They are delivered by Helen, a trained primary school teacher and Sophie, a qualified artist. Having visited a recent workshop with three children, aged nine, two and one, I can safely say there is something for all age groups to get involved with. They also help to inspire creativity and recycling for a long time afterwards. All profits are reinvested in the company with the aim of eventually delivering free workshops to disadvantaged community groups, developing a fairandfunky festival and training and employing local people. hen you become a mother, it is easy to lose your identity – you’re suddenly known as Jack’s mum or Chloe’s mum – and if you’ve given up your career, it can be difficult to get back your sense of self.
Grazyna, or Grace Bylinka, as she is also known, joined Oriflame as a consultant in 2007. She admits to being an extremely shy, quiet person who was lacking in confidence. Six years later, the 34-year-old is now a Regional Manager with the Swedish company and is considered to be one of its most successful traders in Britain, turning over £500,000 with 10 nationwide sales teams, totalling over 500 people who work for her. Grace, who is based in Huddersfield, but originates from Poland, said: “I initially joined Oriflame to get a discount on my own purchases and boost my income through sales to friends. I didn’t realise that a year down the line it would become my career and allow me to leave my day job!” She had been working as a hospitality assistant at KPMG but was so successful that she was able to concentrate on Oriflame, selling nature-inspired cosmetics, skincare and fragrances, full time. Grace, one of only nine regional managers, has built her team through networking, referrals and recruitment and manages them through social media, webinars and face to face meetings. Working under the Oriflame brand, she is self-employed and makes most of her income on commission on products sold by her team members. She also sells products across West Yorkshire through online orders, at networking meetings and events. “My own story is a perfect example of how much you can achieve by selling to your own network of friends, family and work colleagues,” said Grace. “When people think of direct selling they assume it’s door to door but you don’t have to do this, you can do just as well selling to people who you come into regular contact with – from your family to mums at the school gate! Plus, with modern technology you don’t even need to be face to face to carry on making sales. I have sold products through Facebook, texts, emails and my personalised Oriflame web page.” In addition to her passion for the products, which are all nature-inspired and not tested on animals, Grace cites the flexibility of her work and the limitless opportunities for growth and earnings within Oriflame as two of the key reasons for her drive and success. She said: “Being my own boss, I can choose when I want to work and for how long, there are no hard and fast rules. I earn up to 35% commission, enjoy free products and take advantage of the many incentives the company offers.” She was surprised to discover that despite the initial language barriers, she not only has a knack for selling, but also managing people and motivating them to succeed, so much so that last year she was named Oriflame Regional Manager of the Year and Highest Recruiter.

esides chocolate eggs, nothing quite says Easter like the sight of newborn lambs and fluffy yellow chicks. Spring is the perfect time of year to don your raincoat, pull on your wellies and take the kids to a farm. One of the best we’ve discovered over the years is St Leonard’s Farm Park in Esholt, Bradford, just half an hour’s drive away. If you visit at this time of year, you’re guaranteed to see some newborn animals and let’s face it, who doesn’t go “aww” at the sight of tiny piglets! St Leonard’s has all the usual suspects – sheep, goats, pigs, ponies, ducks, chickens and more surprisingly, meerkats. Feed can be bought for a small charge upon entrance to the farm and convenient hand-washing facilities are located around the park. Children will delight at the sight of the goats crossing the billy goat bridge right above their heads. Yes, before you ask, I was one of the many parents playing the part of the troll and delivering my one-liner: “Who’s that trip trapping over my bridge?” But for those preferring something a
little more cuddly, there is also a small animals and birds house where you will find guinea pigs and rabbits. There is usually an opportunity for your kids to get up close and personal with these. The farm is designed with little ones in mind and if you don’t mind pulling straw out of their hair for half an hour afterwards, then let them loose in the straw play barn. It is basically a multitude of hay bales stacked up to provide tunnels for kids to climb through and generally jump about on. A simple idea I admit, but I defy any parent who tells me their child doesn’t love it. For older children there are electric ride on tractors, an aerial zip slide and mini diggers while younger ones can play on the toddler trikes. These are conveniently located in the middle of the farm and surrounded by benches where parents can sit and watch. If the weather turns cold, you can always head indoors to Farmer James’ Fun Barn, a soft play equipped with all manner of slides. There is a separate toddler area and seating for parents but be warned, if it’s wet and windy out, it can get busy and there may not be room for buggies. There is a pleasant picnic area or you
could try the Wain House Tea Room for lunch or a snack. The Wain House is a beautiful 16th Century listed building and has been used as a filming location for Emmerdale, which at one time was shot in Esholt – The Woolpack is still there and attracts a great number of soap opera fans every year. Children are catered for at the tea room but we’ve found the food a little hit and miss – sometimes it’s lovely, sometimes not so much. St Leonard’s does have baby changing facilities but as you’d expect, they’re located in a converted outbuilding which can get a little chilly. One thing worth mentioning is the farm specialises in birthday parties for children aged between four and 16. As yet, I’ve not booked one for one of my three but I have watched groups of kids stomping around the farm with Farmer James and it always looks like great fun. The farm is open Tuesday to Sunday but do check the website prior to travelling and note that during low season some parts of the farm may be closed due to poor ground conditions. Admission is £4.50 for all visitors over the age of two and £1.95 for toddlers between the age of one and two. So, what are you waiting for? ovelists, poets and illustrators are gearing up for the seventh Huddersfield Literature Festival which this year promises to be a fantastic family event.
In previous years, the festival, which has been running since 2006, has attracted bestselling children’s authors such as Anne Fine. This year, the festival relaunches, following a brief break in 2012, with the support of Huddersfield’s own acclaimed novelist, Joanne Harris, author of fantasy novels “Runemarks” and “Runelight”, not to mention a host of titles for adults including the award-winning “Chocolat”, which was later adapted for the screen. The festival runs from March 14 to March 17 and Joanne will be making an appearance at Waterstones, New Street, Huddersfield, on March 16 from 10.30am to 11.30am. She is hosting a free storytelling

event. “Children of all ages will enjoy our storytelling event and creative writing workshops, as well as the Manga afternoon, which celebrates the Japanese art and story form with stalls, art competitions and more. “In future years we plan to expand the festival and provide many more events, including more programming for children.” The creative writing workshops will be held from 1pm to 3pm on March 16 at West Building at the university and are aimed at five to nine-year-olds, 10 to 13-year-olds and 14 to 16-year-olds. The youngest group will work with author and poet, Dawn Rodgers on a “Making ©Jordan Smith Monsters” theme. The 10 to 13-year-olds will work with Rick Vanes, children’s author and writer for the Cbeebies show “Chuggington.” The older group will work with Annabel Pitcher, author of “My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece” and “Ketchup Cloud.” All workshops cost £5 and children aged between five and nine must be accompanied by an adult. Regular meetings and drop-in sessions are held at the premises for both mums and dads and online The Motherhub supports over 300 members. Attendance can vary between two and 20 people but Katy claims the group offers an alternative to parents who are seeking help from like-minded people rather than professionals. On Tuesdays a parent and baby or toddler session is held between 3pm and 6pm, a similar session is held on Thursdays from 1pm to 4pm and on Wednesdays an advice and support drop-in session is held from 7pm to 9pm. The group also aims to support mums with weight loss issues on Saturdays at 10am and members can take part in a Sunday walking club. Plans for the future include introducing breast feeding support sessions. Katy said: “We are continuing to raise
funds to pay to convert the garage into a pram store.” The group plans to host a Spring craft fair on April 6 at Birchencliffe Village Hall, Huddersfield and on Easter weekend a pub crawl, following a famous route around Lindley and the surrounding area, will take place in association with Ruddi’s Retreat, a charity that provides respite holidays for families with seriously ill children. Funds are raised in a number of other ways including online auctions. The group is also among the first to sign up to a new coffee packaging recycling scheme run by TerraCycle, helping the environment and raising funds for The Motherhub with every unit of recycled material collected. “We would like to see a Motherhub in every town,” said Katy, “There are a couple of other charities that run something similar but there is nothing quite like The Motherhub.” For more information on The Motherhub, visit www.motherhub.org.

But as a new parent, it can often be a struggle to know where to turn for advice or a friendly ear – something that Katy Livings found out when she moved to Lindley, Huddersfield, two years ago and took over the running of The Nightingale Bar and Dining Rooms on Acre Street with her partner, Chris Baird. Katy said: “My daughter, Molly, was two weeks old and I didn’t know any other mums, so we started to hold meetups in the pub. “We quickly realised everyone had some sort of issue to deal with whether it was suffering from post natal depression, financial worries, wanting to return to work or relationship problems. “We all thought it would be really nice if we could have somewhere for people to go for support.” As a result, the group applied for £10,000 of National Lottery funding

session suitable for all ages in which she intends to explore the craft and demonstrate how she builds worlds in her writing. Later the same day she will be at St Paul’s Hall at the University of Huddersfield for the event, “Joanne Harris: In Conversation with James Nash.” She will be interviewed by the Yorkshire poet and former Reader in Residence for Kirklees Libraries at 7pm. Other family events include Huddersfield Manga Con 2013 on the same day between 12pm and 4pm at Quayside Hall at the university. The event is a celebration of all things Manga including Japanese culture, music, food, art and literature. It Joanne Harris will include stalls, a raffle, creative classes in Japanese calligraphy, Manga scripts and drawing, an art competition and a Cosplay contest which encourages visitors to dress up as Manga characters. inter is finally coming to an end which means it’s time to look forward to some fabulous Easter reads. Here, we take a peek at the best books for youngsters available this Spring.
Easter Reads The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd (£6.99) First published in America in 1942, The Runaway Bunny imagines all the different routes he might take to leave home, but his mother counters every one, showing him that she will always be there for him. It is a timeless classic exploring the theme of a mother’s love, suitable for any age. The Three Trees by Angela Elwell Hunt, illustrated by Tim Jonke (£5.99) The Three Trees, the original author of which is unknown, is a true folktale that tells how each tree will serve God in a special way. One becomes a manger, one a boat on Galilee and one becomes the cross. Thoughtful and celebratory, the book is carefully illustrated and will provoke discussion about Easter with children around the age of five. The Story of Easter by Fiona Boon, illustrated by Lara Ede (£4.99) This is a simple retelling of the Easter story in short rhyming text with clear, positive pictures. The Story of Easter is a perfect introduction for small children from the age of three.
Jody’s Beans by Doyle Malachy, illustrated by Judith Allibone (£3.99) The book is perfect for Spring as Jody and her Granddad plant, tend to and wait for the beans to grow. All of Jody’s eager questions are met with the reply, “wait and see.” The beans are harvested and next year’s seeds collected. As an experienced gardener, Jody now also replies, “wait and see”, when asked how her crop is going. Suitable for readers aged four. A First Book of Nature by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Mark Hearld (£14.99) This would make a perfect present for a little one this Easter. As a beautifully produced hardback, the book uses the seasons as a frame to introduce animals, plants, insects, the sea and the weather in easily understood, short pieces. Superb pictures of cherry blossom, hares and nesting birds all help to convey the meaning of Spring.
Young Readers Tattybogle by Sandra Horn, illustrated by Ken Brown (£5.99) Tattybogle faces all weathers as a scarecrow with unrelenting cheerfulness. However, the raging storms of winter shreds his clothes and scatters his limbs to the wind, leaving only a stick stuck in the ground.
