This is Mike’s dad. Mike and his dad spend a lot of time in the park. Some days they play football. Dad is a great football player, Mike thinks.

Other days, they fly a kite in the fields by where they live. Dad helps Mike get the kite flying by throwing it up in the air at just the right time.
“Run, run —it’s taking off!” shouts dad. 4

If something is broken, Dad can always fix it. He really is the best at being a pit-stop mechanic, thinks Mike as his dad fixes his racer. “I’ll just tighten this a little more, and you’ll be ready for the race!” says Dad.

Mike and his dad are pretending to be pirates. Mike is Captain Howell and dad is being ‘Rackham the Red’—the fiercest of all pirates. Together, they plunder enemy ships and travel to far away places. “Ship ahoy!..” shouts Mike, “…put up your sails” “Right you are Captain… and Howell? ” asks Dad. “Yes,” replies Mike, “Draw your cutlass, we’re gonna cut ‘em to pieces!” 8

In the summer, they like going to the beach. Dad and Mike get an extra scoop of their favourite ice- cream. “This is a nice treat!� grins Dad.

Dad always watches and cheers when Mike plays football matches. “Come on Mike! Don’t let him get it!” shouts Dad.

When Mikes’ team looses, Dad encourages him. “Don’t worry, all the best players loose a match once in a while. You’re still a great footballer.”

On the way home, Mike and Dad take the scenic route through the forest. Mike loves to race down the hills on his mountain bike. “That’s quite fast enough!” laughs Dad.

In the garden Dad takes a nap, while the fearless Sir Mike sneaks in on the sleeping dragon. “I’m gonna crush you!” shouts Mike excitedly.

It’s never boring being with Dad. At dinner time, Mike thinks about all the things he does with his dad. It really is so much fun when Dad’s around. 20

When going to bed Dad reads Mike a story. Mike loves when Dad read him stories. Falling asleep Mike is very happy, he thinks: “My dad is the best!�
