CHAIRMANS MESSAGE
SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
SIMON FIRSTLY, WELCOME BACK TO PARC Y SCARLETS. HOW GOOD IS IT TO SAY THAT FOR MY FIRST MATCH-DAY COLUMN OF THE CAMPAIGN! This almost feels like my first full season since taking on the role as executive chairman. The closest I have come to crowds is the Nottingham pre-season friendly last month and it was brilliant to hear the fans in such good voice that afternoon. Long may that continue. A lot has happened since my last ramblings back in June. Dwayne has taken the reins as head coach and we have made some significant appointments in his back-room team. We have also welcomed back some familiar faces to the playing squad.
to be playing in our league games and the new URC structure progresses us massively towards that goal.
Congratulations as well to our new signing Tomas Lezana, who became the 242nd player to represent the Scarlets on the international stage when he took the field for Argentina against the All Blacks last month.
We are delighted this evening to have been able to offer NHS workers a ticket to the game as a gesture of our gratitude for the incredible dedication and commitment they have shown during the Covid pandemic.
On the field, last year was disappointing for us and we have set higher standards from a performance perspective. Although we came up just short in Edinburgh last weekend, there are plenty of positive signs that we can compete against the best in both the URC and Europe.
To our loyal supporters, a huge thanks for all your patience as we re-start life at the Parc and continue to work through the many challenges that have presented us over the last 19 months or so.
In terms of the United Rugby Championship — and what a great start it was across round one — we have to fully embrace the league and make it as successful as we possibly can. Four new South African teams all bring a bit of spice and a new TV deal with a free-to-air component is massive. The key is for the best players
5
It will be an emotional evening for us all seeing you back in the ground in your numbers, it has been too long. Enjoy the occasion, but also with Covid still very much a part of our lives, stay safe and be mindful of your fellow fans. Diolch, Simon

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD COACH
SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
DWAYNE Croeso nôl! This has been a night I’ve been looking forward to for a long time, playing at home with crowds back at Parc y Scarlets. Can I first say a huge thanks to you all for your continued and dedicated support of the Scarlets during what has been one of the toughest periods the club has ever experienced. It will be an emotional night to see our gates open and supporters returning in numbers and I can’t wait to once again sample the unique atmosphere that the Scarlets fans produce on match day. I am a proud West Walian, I remember my dad taking me as a young boy to Stradey Park and I just fell in love with the place. The Scarlets has always been in my blood and coming back this summer as head coach, having worn the Scarlets jersey as a player, is a proud, proud moment for me.
The sound of Sosban Fach, Yma O Hyd and Calon Lân around Parc y Scarlets will be music to the ears. The boys have worked incredibly hard over the summer and although we were frustrated to come up just short in Edinburgh last weekend, there was plenty of good stuff in there and something we are determined to build on. Dwayne
Every club had to play through this pandemic without their fans in the stadium, but speaking to the players and coaches here I think we missed you more than most. You really are our 16th player and throughout this season, in the new United Rugby Championship and in Europe, you are all going to have a huge part to play.

GREAT
Back home and playing with a smile again IN NINE MONTHS’ TIME, WHEN THE CURTAIN COMES DOWN ON THE 2021-22 SEASON, IT IS UNLIKELY THAT MANY WILL REMEMBER A PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY ON A THURSDAY NIGHT IN THE EAST MIDLANDS. THAT IS, UNLESS YOU’RE SCOTT WILLIAMS. That match at Welford Road last month marked the culmination of a dogged and determined battle back from injury for the Wales international centre. Those 20-odd minutes with the Scarlets on his chest once again meant a lot. Back on home soil and back to full fitness, it is clear that Williams is enjoying his rugby again. And if that brief cameo against Tigers was the appetiser, his 80 minutes of classy midfield play in Edinburgh was a mouthwatering fare that will leave Scarlets fans relishing more. “To put the Scarlets jersey back on was a bit special and I’m just thankful to be able to have the opportunity here and to all the coaches and staff who have put faith in me,” said Scott this week.
8
“I just want to enjoy my rugby again and fingers crossed get a bit of luck with staying fit. There is some good competition here, some good strength in depth, and a good training environment where everyone is kept on their toes. I’m enjoying it here, there is a good feel around training, it’s exciting.” As he spoke to the media, Williams was inevitably asked about the injury issues that blighted his time at the Ospreys. “I think if you asked anyone they’re never pain free,” he admits, “but I feel really good and the fittest I’ve been for years. That was the toughest thing for me. It was easy for me to tell people how I felt, but I didn’t have the opportunity to show what I could still do.

“It’s not nice being injured, but it’s part of the job. Everyone picks up an injury here or there. I’m not going to lie, it has been a tough couple of seasons, but I don’t want to dwell too much on that. I just want to focus on repaying the people who have given me an opportunity and proving people wrong.”
There was also the welcome sight of the Williams-Jon Davies midfield combo purring again.
Williams returned to Parc y Scarlets in the summer, back at the club where he had played 137 matches and was an integral part of the 2016-17 Championship-winning side.
After the disappointment of defeat in the Scottish capital, Williams and his team-mates are determined to return to winning ways against the Johannesburg-based Lions in Llanelli this evening.
“A lot of people probably doubted me and I can see why because I was out of contract and probably a high-risk option for clubs,” he adds. “I’m just thankful to Peely and the staff and the coaches here for believing in me. There was only one place I really wanted to go. When I spoke to Dwayne and he gave me the opportunity, it was a nobrainer for me.” Williams’s performance against Edinburgh was certainly encouraging for all parties. There was time on the ball, perfectly weighted passes and the trademark steely aggression that made Scott such a fans favourite down west.

“It was good, it was like rolling back the years a bit,” smiles Scott. “I’ve played a bit with Jon before so it was quite seamless coming straight back in with him.”
“We watched their game last week, in the backline they’ve got some really threatening players, really fast wingers and up front they’ve got some big ball carriers , it’s going to be a tough game,” adds Williams. “As for us, I thought we were a little bit unfortunate not to come away with a win in Edinburgh, but we showed some good glimpses of what we’ve been working on over the summer. We have been harsh on ourselves this week, but it’s now about the next job, hopefully putting the small things right and getting a good win.”

SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
SCARLETS “There are generations of rugby players who owe so much to Mr Rees and the roll-call of players who came through the ranks of Llanelli schoolboys reads like a Who’s Who of Welsh rugby.
We are saddened to learn that John Rees, a stalwart of schoolboy rugby in the region, has died at the age of 90. Mr Rees will be remembered for nearly 70 years of work supporting schools rugby in Llanelli, helping generations of Llanelli schoolboys achieve their rugby ambitions. Scarlets president Phil Bennett said: “John Rees will be remembered as a true local hero. He was a gentleman and a lovely guy to talk to. He was respected by all who came into contact with him. His influence in nurturing young rugby talent was immense in this area and will be remembered for years to come. “I was a Coleshill (school) boy and Mr Rees was in the Gram (Grammar School) but he always made sure we ‘secondary modern’ boys were looked after and got our chances. “I was chatting to Derek Quinnell after hearing the sad news of his death and we both wondered where we would be without the help and guidance and mentoring of Mr Rees.
12
“He was an inspirational man and I am sure I speak for everyone in the world of rugby in sending sincere condolences to his family and friends.” Four years ago, Mr Rees was awarded the prestigious Walter Hughes trophy for services to sport at the annual Brin Isaac Memorial Awards dinner in Llanelli. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 12, at 11am at Bryn Chapel, Llanelli. It will be followed by burial in the chapel cemetery. There is no limit on numbers, but mourners are asked to wear masks and use the provided hand sanitisers. Mr Rees is survived by his wife Pam, children Hugh and Catrin, grandchildren and great-grandson.
Tomas Lezana became the 242nd player to represent the Scarlets on the international stage when he came off the bench for Argentina in their defeat to the All Blacks on the Gold Coast.

Scarlets fall short in Edinburgh thriller
SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
A stirring second-half comeback packed with character wasn’t enough as Scarlets left the new DAM Health Stadium in Edinburgh with a losing bonus point after a breathless URC round one contest. Tries by Steff Evans, Kieran Hardy and Johnny McNicholl kept the visitors in contention right up until the final whistle, but it was Edinburgh who held out for a 26-22 win to give a crowd of more than 5,000 a victorious house-warming party. Scarlets started the match with real tempo, with their off-loading game causing Edinburgh’s defence plenty of problems. Centre Scott Williams, on his competitive return to the side, had a try chalked off for a forward pass after great interplay behind the scrum, but the Scarlets did turn their pressure into points with a try on 12 minutes by wing Steff Evans. Sione Kalamafoni made the initial bust and after strong work by front-rowers Rob Evans and Samson Lee, slick hands put the winger over for an acrobatic score in the left-hand corner. Scarlets could have had a second score shortly afterwards only for hooker Ryan Elias to be held up over the line following a line-out rumble. With scrum-half Ben Vellacott posing a constant threat, the rest of the half belonged to the hosts. Fly-half Blair Kinghorn hit an inside line for his side’s first try, then centre Mark Bennett sliced through for the second. Dan Jones reduced the arrears with a 40m penalty three minutes before the interval, but on the stroke of half-time flying wing Darcy Graham darted away from a ruck. Despite protestations from the Scarlets that Edinburgh infringed in the build-up, the score remained and Edinburgh went in at the break 19-8 to the good.
17
Scarlets and Steff Evans thought they had their second try of the night seven minutes after the restart, but the wing just put his foot on the touchline as he dived over in the corner. However, moments later scrum-half Kieran Hardy darted blind, spotted the gap and raced over unopposed to bring the visitors right back into the match. Edinburgh and, in particular, that man Graham were refusing to buckle though and on 57 minutes the winger stepped his way over for his second and Edinburgh’s fourth and bonus-point try. But the see-sawing nature of the contest continued in a breathless final period. On 66 minutes, a clever switch of play by replacement Dane Blacker found space, Jon Davies fended off a defender to burst through and his pass found Johnny McNicholl on a lovely inside line for the score. Sam Costelow struck a beautiful conversion and it was a one-score game again. Scarlets had a couple of attacking line-outs in the final moments as they pressed for the win, but it was Edinburgh who held out to clinch a thriller. Replacement Tom Phillips left the field on a stretcher, but was up and about on crutches after the game.

After recent domestic struggles, the Lions went into their debut URC campaign as the least-fancied of the South African contingent.
In a weekend that proved a baptism of fire for the new South African sides it was the Emirates Lions who roared defiance for the men from the Rainbow Nation.
Yet, it was only four years ago, under the stewardship of current Gloucester coach Johan Ackermann that they reached a second successive Super Rugby final.
While the Bulls, Stormers and Sharks struggled with their first taste of northern hemisphere crossborder rugby, the Lions registered a morale-boosting victory over Zebre in Parma.
The Lions have travelled north with a 33-man squad and take on Glasgow and Ulster following tonight’s match in Llanelli.
After stunning the hosts by racing into a 38-0 lead, the men from Johannesburg had to dig deep in the second period to hold back a determined home fightback, but they did just that to open their account in the competition.

Man of the match in the thrilling win over Zebre in round one, Scarlets fans will recognise Maxwane from his scoring exploits with the Cheetahs in the PRO14. The speedster finished the 2018-19 campaign as the competition’s leading try-scorer.
Named in the original Boks’ training squad to face the British & Irish Lions, the former sprinter can light up matches. In two games in Super Rugby Unlocked Simelane made a massive 158 metres, beat 10 defenders and seven line breaks.
The abrasive back-rower played 11 Tests for the Boks between 2016-17. Had an injury-plagued spell in the Gallagher Premiership with Gloucester before returning to the Lions on a new three-year deal.

John made 330 Scarlets appearances over 17 seasons and holds the record for the most matches played in the regional era.
“When you look at the players who were in the Academy five years ago when I was here, they are now starting week in week out for the Scarlets, it is great to see the journeys they have been on.
Since hanging up his playing boots following his final game against Glasgow in 2016, he has worked with the RGC 1404 Academy and alongside another ex-Scarlet Mark Jones with the Premiership team in North Wales. “The Scarlets Academy has a proud tradition of being a production line for the senior side and I’m excited by this opportunity to help make sure that continues.” Scarlets Development Pathway Manager Kevin George added: “For us, this appointment was about getting the balance right in the coaching group with Emyr having been promoted to oversee the transition players. “We had a lot of interest in the post and Phil, with his experience working with academies and the commitment he gave to North Wales, came out very strongly. We are delighted to have him on board to help nurture the next generation of Scarlets.”

The initiative, which will run for 10 weeks, will see Ceredigion Schools, Pembrokeshire Schools, Carmarthen Schools, Mynydd Mawr & Dinefwr Schools and Llanelli Schools (under15/16s) attending training and coach development sessions at Parc y Scarlets. The aim is to develop a closer working relationship with all Dewar Shield school organisations in the Scarlets region and align the region’s rugby pathway through supporting skill development, coach education and raising parental awareness around certain aspects of the game.
sides of the game, which will be provided by Scarlets staff. Scarlets Academy skills coach Paul Fisher explained: “We aim to provide a meaningful CPD opportunity for all the Dewar Shield coaches and hub officers in each respective school area along with delivering a rugby session that focuses on the skills relevant to the current demands and needs of the modern game. “We are extremely excited about this opportunity as we feel it will aid the quality of the coaching delivery and improve standards of players in school district squads, schools and clubs across the region. “We are very keen to promote ‘The Scarlets Way’.”
The rugby sessions will be led by the Scarlets Academy coaches and will include insights into the strength and conditioning, medical and analysis

Scarlets to build new partnership with Brickability
SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
COMMERCIAL SCARLETS ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME BRICKABILITY GROUP AS A COMMERCIAL PARTNER AHEAD OF THE 2021-22 SEASON. Established in South Wales more than a quarter of a century ago, Brickability has become a market leading supplier to the construction industry. The Brickability logo will feature on the Scarlets’ playing shorts for the 2021-22 season. Scarlets Executive Chairman Simon Muderack said: “It is wonderful to welcome new commercial partners to the Scarlets family and in particular, a business with the success, ambition and drive of the Brickability Group. “They are a business that has been built on strong relationships and we look forward to developing our own partnership over the coming years and welcoming John and his team to Parc y Scarlets as we prepare for an exciting new season in the United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup.” Brickability Group Chairman John Richards said: “As a business founded in South Wales we are delighted to be involved with Welsh rugby and in particular the Scarlets. “Rugby in Llanelli has a very long and distinguished history and the Scarlets clearly have strong ambitions to add further to that fine history.
45
Brickability Group plc is, in its own field, equally ambitious and we look forward to mutual successes.” Brickability is a market leading supplier of facing bricks, blocks, rainscreen cladding systems, architectural masonry, roofing tiles and slates to the construction industry. SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
THOUGHTS FROM IT WILL TAKE A WHILE.WE HAVEN’T HAD A FULLY ACCESSIBLE PARC Y SCARLETS FOR NEARLY 18 MONTHS AND WE WILL SEE QUITE A FEW CHANGES. When to wear a mask, do we need a Covid pass and which bars are open?
might think that Heol James Gravell is named after a local garage owner.
Some of the more confused fans might even drive to Stradey Park by mistake as it’s been such a long time since most of us have been able to see the Scarlets play live. Those who do, will find out that the hallowed turf is now a large housing estate. There are a few hints to rugby, pone of the streets is Stryd Bennett, a nod to the Scarlets legend, Rhodfa Delme celebrates the winning captain against the All Blacks in 1972, then there’s Cwrt Bergiers built near to the spot where Roy scored that famous try in the 9-3 win. The exact spot is hard to work out but it is apparently underneath a garden shed.
There aren’t many more clues to the Scarlet connection except maybe for nearby New Zealand Street. It is the only street in the United Kingdom named after that country.
A few streets away is Heol James Gravell, a tribute to Carwyn James and Ray Gravell. Why couldn’t they have had a street each? Who knows, when memories begin to fade people
47
It’s origin is a bit of a mystery although it wasn’t to commemorate the All Blacks win as it was built early in the last century. There isn’t a Wallaby Street or a South Africa Street to hark back to other touring countries to play at Stradey. Tonight we welcome another South African side to Parc y Scarlets. Our confused supporters have now found their way there at last. After last week’s narrow defeat to Edinburgh let’s hope there will be a better performance against the Lions. But before we leave the memory of Stradey completely there are connections with tonight’s
game .A few months before the Scarlets beat the All Blacks in October 1972 the team toured South Africa and played six games, winning four. The squad included the bulk of the team that would play in that famous victory. One of the absentees was the coach Carwyn James who refused to travel to South Africa because of his opposition to Apartheid. Yes, the same Carwyn commemorated in Heol James Gravell. These days, South African sides are regular Scarlets opponents. The Lions are very welcome to the Parc, particularly since the ground has been recognised as one of the best Sports stadiums in the country. The old Stradey would have been happy with that accolade. The bit of grass under the garden shed in Cwrt Bergiers must be secretly sweating with pride. Let’s hope that tonight we at our new home will see the type of open rugby which frequently graced its predecessor.

TOUR DE
Scarlets Community Foundation completed a remarkable Tour de Scarlets over the summer, visiting 53 grassroots rugby clubs across the region. Over four incredible days, Community Foundation officer Rhodri Jones, head groundsman Luke Jenkins and All Blacks great Sean Fitzpatrick cycled 350 miles calling into clubs in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion to raise funds for the local community game. They were joined at the clubs by members of the Scarlets squad with the likes of Foundation ambassador Rhys Patchell, Josh Macleod, Daf Hughes, Iestyn Rees, Marc Jones, Luke Davies and backs coach Dai Flanagan among those making appearances along the way. Group Chief Executive of the Welsh Rugby Union, Steve Phillips, also lent his support by greeting the riders on one of their final stops at Yr Hendy RFC.
48
The Tour finished at Parc y Scarlets where the riders were applauded home by Scarlets staff, family and friends. The Foundation would like to thank everyone who turned out on the ride to give their support and to those who have donated, with more than £7,000 raised. Community Foundation officer Rhodri Jones said: “It was an amazing experience visiting every club in the region and we met some wonderful people along the way who put so much into the community game. “A huge thanks to everyone who came out to support us, it meant a huge amount, and to those who have donated to the Foundation with every penny raised going back into grassroots rugby.” Former All Blacks captain, now Scarlets board member, Sean Fitzpatrick said: “It was the most wonderful experience and for me it brought me back to the grassroots game.

“Sometimes we forget about the community game; it is so, so important to rugby. The rugby club is the centre of the universe for lots of people and those people have been so good to us; I loved seeing how the volunteers all got involved to contribute to keep their club going. “It has been a phenomenal effort by Rhodri, Luke and the support staff who played their part and I hope people keep contributing by going to the justgiving page because it will all go back to these clubs.” If you would like to add a donation visit our justgiving page: https://justgiving.com/campaign/ tourdescarlets Pictured are Sean Fitzpatrick, Luke Jenkins and Rhodri Jones on their travels

LATEST FROM PARC Y SCARLETS
SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
FROM THE
Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel spoke to the media ahead of this evening’s URC clash with Emirates Lions at Parc y Scarlets. Here is what he had to say. Dwayne, a few days on, what are your reflections on the Edinburgh loss? DP: “There is a bit of frustration to be honest. I thought there were good elements to our game and as a group we talked yesterday about leaving Edinburgh back into that game with some unforced errors, especially in that last 20 minutes of the first half. We compounded errors, we weren’t quite as reactive as could have been, there were instances like a tap penalty on their line when we didn’t react quickly enough. In that 20-minute period they scored 19 points after we had largely controlled the first 20 minutes, but as I said, there was a lot of good stuff as well.” You took a few knocks, do you have any updates? DP: “We’re waiting on a scan for Tom Phillips, but it doesn’t look good in all honesty. I am disappointed for Tom because he has come back into the fold, trained really well and really put himself in the frame. He is from Llanelli, loves the club and is a really smart rugby player. It is a tough one to take for him.”
50
It must have been a big positive to see Scott and Jon back together? DP: “It was a positive and not unexpected. They have trained really well. All our centres have trained exceptionally well and Johnny Williams is also coming back into the frame. It was good to see both Scotty and Jon back together and performing. It is good to see them both back and I am sure they are only going to get better. They are two very important individuals for us; they are quality players but off the field they drive a lot of standards, they are very vocal players in terms of the group and love playing for the Scarlets.” How excited are you to be back at home and playing your first South African opposition of the URC? DP: “We are very excited. We have scouted the Lions through the Currie Cup and we took a lot from last week’s game versus Zebre. They were very impressive in the first half and punished Zebre every opportunity they got. They were fast and powerful as you would expect. We understand the magnitude of the task. The fact the four big South African franchises are in the URC is great for the league and we are looking forward to the challenge on Friday.”

SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
Gareth Griffiths IT HAS BEEN STRANGE WITHOUT YOU. THE FANS THAT IS. PARC Y SCARLETS WAS THE ONLY WELSH REGIONAL GROUND LAST SEASON THAT WELCOMED SUPPORTERS BACK. But that was only for the final game of the Rainbow Cup against Edinburgh in June and it was for a limited amount. There was the odd benefit for the media of empty stadiums. Arriving and leaving the ground was much easier for the hacks as they could park right outside the ground by Grav’s statue. You could also hear and see the gladiatorial combat first hand. Hear the noise and bone-crunching tackles up close and personal with those searing sounds normally drowned out by the roar of the crowd.
Since Nigel Davies left in 2012, Scarlets have always looked outside of Wales with Simon Easterby, Wayne Pivac, Brad Mooar and Glenn Delaney given the reins. Only Pivac delivered silverware in May 2017 when Scarlets claimed the Guinness PRO12 title after a golden couple of months.
That was about it though. Professional rugby was meant for an audience. And that audience was missing for almost 16 months in Llanelli. The players are the leading lights, the fans are the willing spectators. This is the self-proclaimed heart and soul country of Welsh rugby but the heart and soul were missing. Now it is back and Scarlets players and coaches will be grateful for it. The loyal faithful flooding back to see a returning hero trying to restore the glory days to this side. ‘West is best’ is often trumpeted in these parts. ‘Welsh is best’ is what has been adopted by the Scarlets hierarchy concerning the head coach position with Dwayne Peel’s appointment. Carwyn James and Gareth Jenkins are local legends that have created iconic past Scarlets sides.
53
Scarlets executive chairman Simon Muderack has conceded that is far too long and Peel will eventually be expected to deliver some silverware down the line. For now, a return to the flowing rugby associated with Scarlets’ sides of old will be demanded by the fans who have expected a certain style over the years. There was a brief glimpse of that last week in the narrow defeat against Edinburgh. The first chance to see that on the hallowed Parc y Scarlets turf will be seen this evening. Welcome back. You have been missed.

Gair o BRAF YW CAEL CROESAWU CEFNOGWYR NÔL I BARC Y SCARLETS AR GYFER Y TYMOR NEWYDD AC AR GYFER EIN HYMGYRCH YN Y BENCAMPWRIAETH RYGBI UNEDIG NEWYDD. Rhyfedd iawn oedd gyrru i’r stadiwm ar ddiwrnod gêm heb glywed unrhyw ganu, dim baneri’n chwifio a dim llu o grysau Scarlets yn gwneud eu ffordd draw i’r Parc. Yn rhyfedd byth oedd y distawrwydd o amgylch y stadiwm wrth i’r bois rhedeg allan i’r cae neu’n dilyn cais werth ei chanmol! Er i’r stadiwm fod yn ddistaw, roedd digon o gefnogaeth i’w weld ar ein sianeli cymdeithasol ac roedd hynny’n ffactor holl bwysig i’r chwaraewyr, yr hyfforddwyr ac i ni fel staff. Ffodus oeddwn i fod yn bresennol yn ystod gemau’r cyfnod clo ac er iddi fod yn brofiad unigryw, fe fydd hi sicr yn bleser i glywed swn nôl yn y stadiwm dros y misoedd nesaf! Yn ogystal â chroesawu cefnogwyr, chwaraewyr, tymor a chynghrair newydd, rydym hefyd yn croesawu prif hyfforddwr a chapten newydd. Mae’n gyfnod cyffroes yn hanes y clwb i groesawu un o’i gyn-chwaraewyr, Cymro Cymraeg a Gorllewinwr balch yn ôl i arwain y garfan. Roedd y newyddion o ddychweliad Dwayne a phenodiad Jon fel capten yn sicr yn ddigon i godi calon Teulu’r Scarlets yn dilyn y 18 mis diwethaf, ac edrychwn ymlaen at ddyfodol y ddau yn eu swyddi newydd. Byddwn hefyd yn dweud ‘Welkom’ i dîm Emirates Lions o Dde Affrica wrth iddyn nhw deithio i dref Llanelli o Johannesburg i herio’r tîm cartref. Roedd hi’n hyfryd i weld cymaint o gefnogwyr yn teithio i Gaeredin penwythnos diwethaf i wylio ein

gêm agoriadol o’r tymor newydd ac fe wnaeth clywed ‘Sosban Fach’ yn atseinio yn Stadiwm DAM Health dod â gwên i lawer o wynebau. Yn olaf, croeso cynnes i weithwyr GIG, gweithwyr allweddol, gweithwyr gofal ac i bob un ohonoch sydd wedi aberthu eich amser dros y flwyddyn a hanner diwethaf i gadw’r gymuned yn iach ac yn ddiogel. Chi yw gwir arwyr y gymuned a diolch i chi am eich ymroddiad wrth i’r gwasanaethau iechyd parhau i weithio o dan straen y pandemig. Rydym wedi colli sawl aelod angerddol o Deulu’r Scarlets dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, ac fe gofiwn amdanyn nhw wrth i ni gymryd ein seddi yn y Parc heno. Mwynhewch y gêm a chroeso adref i Barc y Scarlets.

SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES LIONS
y gair DYMA NI ‘TE – GÊM GARTRE GYNTA’R TYMOR. WI WEDI BOD YN CYFRANNU’R GOLOFN HON ERS TAIR MLYNEDD AR DDEG AC RWY WEDI DWEUD “CROESO NÔL” AR DDECHRE TYMOR BOB TRO. Ond ‘leni ma’r croeso’n fwy twymgalon nag eriôd ar ôl cyfnod mor hir o orfod gwylio’r Scarlets o bell ar y teledu. Diolch byth bod hynny wedi bod yn bosibl, a diolch hefyd i’r Scarlets am drefnu rhaglenni digidol drwy’r cyfnod clo fel bod rhyw ymdeimlad o ‘normalrwydd’ ar ddiwrnod gêm. Ond y gwir amdani yw nad oes gwefr debyg i fod yn y stadiwm i wylio’r ddrama yn fyw yng nghwmni teulu a chyfeillion, a’r bobol y’ch chi ddim ond yn eu gweld ar ddiwrnod gêm ond sydd mor gyfarwydd â ffrindie bore oes. Wrth gwrs, ma’ lot o bethe wedi digwydd ers y tro diwetha’ i ni ddod at ein gilydd ym Mharc y Scarlets. Newid i rai o reolau’r gêm (eto fyth!); y posibilrwydd o rywbeth o’r enw Rugby 12s (i rhywun o’n oedran i deuddeg swllt oedd 12s!); a thaith y Llewod i Dde Affrica; cystadleuaeth newydd o’r enw URC. Pan weles i URC y peth cynta’ ddaeth i ‘meddwl i oedd: “URC - Undeb Rygbi Cymru? Blydi hel, dyma beth fydd shambles!” Ond mae’n debyg taw United Rugby Championship yw ystyr URC. Phew! Mae’n siwr bydd ‘da fi rhywbeth i’w ddweud am y rhain i gyd yn ystod y tymor ond am y tro rwy’ am stico at y Llewod fydd yn ein gwrthwynebu heno. Y gred gyffredinol yw bod timau De Affrica yn cryfhau’r gynghrair ac
65
mae’n siwr bod hynny’n wir. Wedi dweud hynny, weles i sawl sylwebydd yn y wasg yn eu croesawu er mwyn torri ar oruchafiaeth Leinster a Munster dros y blynyddoedd diwetha. Rhyw “also rans” oedd timau Cymru, yr Alban a’r Eidal i’r gwybodusion hyn. Beth ma’ nhw’n wbod? Benetton enillodd Cwpan yr Enfys. Ond i ddychwelyd at y Llewod. Waeth i fi gyfadde nad wy’n gwbod rhyw lawer amdanyn nhw. Enwau cymharol anghyfarwydd yn eu sgwad nhw ar wahân i’r prop Jannie du Plessis. Falle mod i’n mynd yn hen (odw glei) ond rôdd enwe mwy adnabyddus (i fi, o leia’) pan oedd y Llewod yn câl eu hadnabod fel Transvaal, Gauteng Lions ‘r Cats yn y Super 12 a’r Super 14. Ma’ rhai o gewri De Affrica wedi cynrychioli’r rhain – Francois Pienaar, Rassie Erasmus, Bobby Skinstad i enwi dim ond tri. Ac hyd yn oed Josh Strauss yr Afrikaner sy’n Sgotyn erbyn hyn wrth gwrs! Dim ond yr 20 munud cynta’ o gêm y Llewod yn erbyn Zebre wythnos ddwetha’ weles i, diolch i’r wyres fach am i dadcu ddod mâs i’r ardd i gico pêl. Llond llaw yn yr hanner cynta (y Llewod nid yr wyres!) ond rhedeg mâs o wynt yn yr ail hanner. Gobeitho bydd ffitrwydd y Scarlets yn gwneud y gwahaniaeth heno.
