CHAIRMANS MESSAGE
SCARLETS Vs glasgow warriors
SIMON Welcome back to Parc y Scarlets for the start of a busy run of matches for the team.
Unfortunately, Covid-enforced postponements has meant the season has been a bit fractured, but hopefully, we can put behind us the frustration of our defeat to Connacht last time out and pick up a big win against an in-form Glasgow side to get the ball rolling. Once again, thank you for your continued support; it does mean a huge amount to the players, coaches and staff here. There are some big games to come at the business end of the season, including Welsh derbies against Cardiff and the Dragons here at the Parc and home advantage with the Scarlets faithful in full voice is going to be crucial. It’s that time of the season where we have been announcing some key contract renewals for next season and we are delighted that Scott and Patch have agreed new contracts with us. They are both experienced performers at this level, Wales internationals and PRO12 title winners and will add a huge amount to the squad that Dwayne is building. Keep an eye out for more news over the coming weeks. We head back to South Africa on Sunday and we wish the travelling group safe travels. Obviously, it is well documented what happened in November with the Omicron variant and subsequent quarantine in Belfast. We have asked for and had assurances from URC and it is important we embrace this competition and the opportunities it presents. The South African sides have been looking the part in recent weeks and I am sure the Sharks and Bulls are going to be loaded with Springboks when we face them in Durban and Pretoria.
5
Players of that calibre will take the competition to another level and I am sure we will see the URC continue to grow in the coming years. Back to tonight and a warm West Wales welcome to Glasgow, their players, coaches, staff and supporters. The Warriors are a side playing with a lot of confidence at the moment so it will be a big challenge for us, but I am sure the boys will be desperate to put on a big display in front of the fans before they fly off tomorrow. Congratulations to the Scarlets boys who were selected for last weekend’s Six Nations match at Twickenham. I did think Kieran’s late try might see us nick it at the end, but despite the result, it was a valiant effort in that second half. Watching our home-grown players perform on the biggest stage is always a huge source of pride and it is testament to our development system here that so many have come through our pathways to play for the Scarlets and Wales. Of course, there are plenty of those local boys on display this evening so please get behind them and enjoy the game! Finally, the URC and Gallagher Premiership have come together this weekend in a show of solidarity with all those affected by the invasion of Ukraine to support the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. Please donate in any way you can. Diolch Simon

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD COACH
SCARLETS Vs glasgow warriors
DWAYNE Croeso nôl - another Saturday and another big game here at the Parc.
against a strong Glasgow who have been in some excellent form.
We were all frustrated by how the Connacht match panned out. I felt we were in control for the opening 20 minutes and finished strongly in that last half hour or so. But that middle period we allowed Connacht to feed off errors and in fairness to them they took advantage. I felt we left a few chances out there as well.
It is another test for us, but the boys are looking forward to it, they have been putting in a lot of graft on the training pitch.
We have gone through that and worked hard in training to put things right over the last couple of weeks and it’s also been great to welcome some players back onto the training field. The likes of Blade Thomson, Tomas Lezana, Rob Evans and Josh Macleod are all re-integrating and it will be good to see them back in the side over the next few weeks they are big players for us. One of the big frustrations of this season has been the lack of continuity, which is something that has unfortunately been out of our hands with all the Covid postponements, but we are excited to have a run of 10 games, week to week, starting this evening
7
Tomorrow we head off to South Africa to play the matches against the Sharks and Bulls that were postponed back in the autumn. I firmly believe for the integrity of the competition it is important that the South African sides get to play the teams from the north on home soil this season and we are excited by the prospect of running out at iconic venues such as Kings Park and Loftus Versfeld. We have a job to do first, though, and your support is going to be crucial once again. Mwynhewch y gêm

FIGHTING Rhys Patchell reflects on the long road to fitness and what now lies ahead There must have been a time when Rhys Patchell pondered what he had ever done to offend the rugby gods so badly.
games are going to come thick and fast now and hopefully I can stay on the field and contribute to what we are doing here.”
No sooner had he made a welcome return from a string of injury issues, the game went into a Covid-enforced hibernation for the winter!
Amidst it all, a new contract has also been negotiated, ensuring the 28-year-old can extend his stay in West Wales having made the initial trip down the M4 from Cardiff in 2016.
The Wales international fly-half made his comeback for the Scarlets development side in the autumn, featuring in matches against the Dragons and Ospreys. He was then set to figure on November’s ill-fated South Africa tour only for the Omicron variant to intervene, forcing the hasty return and isolation of the touring group and postponement of a clutch of games that followed. He takes up the tale. “I have been ready to go since the middle of October, November. I had found a bit of fitness, I played two development games for the club and then every game got cancelled after that. It was incredibly frustrating. I think I trained something like 13 weeks on the bounce and there were no games. But there we are, that’s how it goes. “The journey to regain fitness has been longer than I had anticipated, but, touch wood, I’ve got all my injuries out of the way in one very long go. The

“I am delighted to have a job next year more than anything,” he smiles. “I have been quite fortunate in my career generally. I have known where I am going to be before Christmas and that’s been a real weight lifted off the shoulders going into the tail end of the season, whereas this time was a bit different. Ultimately, you can have the best agent in the world, but if you are not on the field doing the business, it’s very difficult to sell yourself. “Fortunately for me, getting back on the field came at a good time with regards to that. I had absolute faith that once I got on the field and had a run of games I would be able to deliver and contribute to an organisation, and, fortunately, that organisation is the Scarlets. “I am pleased to be sticking around and contributing to what we are building here and the future success we’re all striving for.”

Patchell certainly has had to battle the injury demons in recent years, although, typically, he remains philosophical about the setbacks he has had to endure since the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019. “Some days, the game doesn’t love you quite as much as you love it,” he adds. “That is the best way to put that. It was incredibly frustrating. I certainly hadn’t anticipated being injured and picking up as many niggles as I did. I wouldn’t say it’s been an easy period to live with me or to be around me. “I was ready to go for a long, long time, from a point of view that I was mentally on the field in terms of being willing to be out there. It’s just been the case that my body has got in the way at times. Well most of the time, actually. “The injuries sort of came at a really frustrating point. You are a couple of days off getting on the field, you have been named in the team in the week and then in the Thursday session or the captain’s run you pick up a niggle and it sets you back. “What I would say is that I appreciate it a lot more now. “I appreciate the match-day nerves a lot more, knowing that at some point they won’t be there anymore and that buzz will have to be replaced by something else. “Did I lose love for the game? I got frustrated with the game, that’s for sure.” During his time on the sidelines, the 21-cap Wales international did hone his coaching skills with the WRU’s player-to-coach programme, also

doing a bit of coaching with his local club side Cardiff Harlequins as well as helping mentor Scarlets Academy fly-half Josh Phillips, like him, a former Ysgol Glantaf pupil. “I enjoyed the course, I also did a bit of charity work with the Sione Mullane Foundation, which is very close to my heart and generally tried to support the boys here, to be of use around the place,” he adds. “I played a lot of rugby as a youngster. Despite the injuries, you are still looking at the thick end of 20 games a season since I started pro rugby. I’ve tried to help the younger players in the squad to understand what the coaches were trying to get out of the week and what the coaches were looking for on the weekend. “But the biggest part of my time off was rehab, to be honest. I have been banned from the physio room on this next contract, certainly limiting my time there!” As for the immediate challenges, Patchell and his Scarlets team-mates are hoping to gain some momentum with a win over Glasgow this evening to ignite what has been a hugely frustrating campaign “Inevitably things take time to bed in,” he adds. “We have been tweaking the way we are trying to play the game, we have had boys coming back from injury and we have had a big turnover of coaching staff. Inevitably, these things take time to come together. “There are elements we are pleased about and elements we are looking to get better at on a daily basis. “It is not for the want of trying that is for sure.”

SCARLETS DUO SIGN NEW DEALS Two of Scarlets’ Wales internationals and 2017 title winners have signed new contracts to extend their stay at the club. Rhys Patchell and Scott Williams have become the latest high-profile players to pen new deals. Patchell is in his sixth season in West Wales, having made a welcome return to the senior team this season after making his comeback from injury in November. “Patch is an experienced international player, who has been playing at the top level for a long time now,” said head coach Dwayne Peel. “He has worked extremely hard to get back out on the field after injury and is going well for us at the moment. I know there was interest in him from other clubs so we are delighted he has signed a new contract.”
12
Rhys said: “I’m pleased to be staying at Parc y Scarlets. The Scarlets are a respected club both domestically and in Europe. “The journey to regain fitness has been longer than I had hoped, but I have thoroughly enjoyed being back on the field with the boys these past few weeks. There is work to be done and I look forward to contributing as much as I can to the future success that we’re all striving for.” Scott, in his second spell at Parc y Scarlets, has been in outstanding form this season, winning two URC player-of-the-match awards and leading the team in the absence of midfield partner Jonathan Davies. Capped 58 times for his country, the 31-year-old has made 146 appearances in a Scarlets jersey since making his debut in 2009 and was a member of the PRO12 title-winning team of 2017.

Peel added: “Scott has been outstanding for us since his return this season. He is a player who leads by example and his performances have shown how much playing for the Scarlets means to him. “He is a player who still has a lot to offer at the top of the game and it is fantastic news that he has committed to the Scarlets.” Scott said: “The Scarlets have shown a lot of faith in what I could do by bringing me back here and I want to repay them for giving me that chance. “We haven’t had the results we have wanted so far this season, but it feels like we are building something under Dwayne and I am excited by what can be achieved by this group in the next few years.” ‘Patch’ is sponsored by City and Trust Finance and Scott by Dyfed Recycling and we would like to thank both businesses for their ongoing support.

In a show of unity and solidarity, the United Rugby Championship and Premiership Rugby will share their platforms with the Red Cross at their games to support their Ukraine Crisis Appeal. At United Rugby Championship and Gallagher Premiership games this weekend big screens will signpost the Red Cross campaign ahead of kick-offs encouraging fans to support the Ukraine Crisis Appeal to help those affected by the invasion of Ukraine. The Ukraine Crisis Appeal will support people in areas currently affected and those potentially affected in the future by the crisis. The URC and Premiership Rugby are proud to stand together and encourage our rugby family to show solidarity with the Ukranian people by donating to the Red Cross appeal across all of its territories.

Connacht take the win at Parc y Scarlets
SCARLETS SCARLETS Vs glasgow Vs EMIRATES warriors LIONS
A late fightback was not enough to prevent Connacht taking the spoils 2923 to secure their first ever win at Parc y Scarlets. The Scarlets will feel they created enough chances to snatch the victory in the second period of this URC clash, but they failed to finish when it mattered and ill-discipline cost them throughout. It had started promisingly with the home side dominating the opening exchanges. But, driven by the boot of international fly-half Jack Carty, the Irish province gained control as the match went on.
blindside to dive over for his side’s third.
Scarlets bossed the opening quarter and after Dan Jones had landed an early penalty, the home side crafted the game’s first try on 19 minutes.
Needing a spark, replacement Kieran Hardy provided it, taking a quick tap only to be impeded by the Connacht defence.
The forwards rumbled forward from an attacking line-out and when the ball was spun wide, Scott Williams delivered an inch-perfect kick through into the path of centre partner Johnny Williams who pounced for his first score in Scarlets colours.
Referee Craig Evans handed Fifita a yellow card and after consulting with the television match adjudged that a try would have been scored and awarded the Scarlets a penalty try.
Jones converted, but against the run of play, it was the visitors who struck next. A cross-field kick from Jones was plucked out of the air inside the Connacht half and it resulted in centre Sam Arnold crossing. Carty missed the conversion, but added two further penalties to nudge his side ahead for the first time. Jones responded with three points of his own after a superb turnover penalty from Daf Hughes, but on the stroke of half-time Connacht claimed their second try courtesy of a shortrange effort from lock Leva Fifita.
Scarlets had further chances - Hardy spilled an inside pass from Sione Kalamafoni with the line at his mercy and Marc Jones lost control of the ball as he touched down over the line. After Fifita saw a second yellow for a late challenge on Ioan Nicholas, a penalty from replacement Rhys Patchell four minutes from time set up a grandstand finish. But the Scarlets were unable to make any further inroads and Connacht celebrated a first win at the ground.
Leading 18-11 at the break, Carty added two further penalties to extend the visitors’ advantage. It got worse for the Scarlets when wing John Porch was freed down the

SCARLETS Vs glasgow warriors
SIX NATIONS
Kieran Hardy pounced for a trademark try, but it wasn’t enough to get Wales over the winning line after a gripping comeback against England at Twickenham. Just as he did in victory at the Principality Stadium a year earlier, the Scarlets No. 9 caught the English defence unawares with a quick tap penalty to bring Wales within touching distance of a first Six Nations win at HQ since 2012.
At U20s level, Wales fell to a 43-14 loss to their English counterparts in Doncaster with strong-running centre Eddie James starting and scrum-half Archie Hughes making an appearance off the bench.
But England managed to hold off Wales’s strong second-half showing to all but end their hopes of retaining the Championship crown. As well as Hardy, Wyn Jones, Ryan Elias, Liam Williams and Jonathan Davies all featured for Wayne Pivac’s side. Attention now turns to round four and a mouthwatering Friday night clash with unbeaten France in Cardiff.

Wilson, of course, is no stranger to West Wales having spent a spell here as forwards coach between 2012 and 2014, working with a number of Scarlets who are still at the club.
That run has also included wins over Connacht in Galway (42-20) and Munster (13-11), Ospreys (38-19) and Dragons (33-14) on home soil.
Scarlets have the edge with 24 wins to 22 in matches played between the sides, although the teams haven’t met at Parc y Scarlets since a 26-8 win for the Scarlets in 2018.
The Warriors also had their moments in the Champions Cup, taking the scalp of Exeter Chiefs in a foggy thriller up north, although a heavy loss in the West Country coupled with home and away defeats to La Rochelle saw Glasgow miss out on qualification to the knockout stages of Europe’s top tier.

Standout players have included Aussie signing Jack Dempsey as well as new Scotland international Sione Tuipulotu, who has proved a menacing attacking presence in midfield.
A run of five successive victories has pushed Danny WIlson’s Glasgow side loudly into the conversation for URC’s end-ofseason play-offs. The hard-earned 13-3 victory over Benetton at Scotstoun last time out lifted the Warriors into third sport in the Championship standings ahead of this evening’s clash in Llanelli.

The 14-cap Wallaby No.8 has made a big impression in his first season at Scotstoun following seven years with the Waratahs in Super Rugby. Currently tops the table for most successful carries and carries in the URC. Dynamic, powerful and capable of doing some serious damage to defensive lines.
The former Scotland 7s flyer has been making his name on the 15-a-side stage over the last 12 months. Following a long-term injury he made his Test debut against France during the 2020 Six Nations then made history by scoring four tries in the victory over Tonga in November - the first men’s player since Gavin Hastings to achieve that feat.
Has slipped down the international pecking order of late, but the 6ft 10in British & Irish Lions lock is still a formidable presence at the heart of the Warriors pack. Now in his second spell with the Scottish side following a spell in France with Castres and Toulouse, the 32-year-old has been a virtual ever present in Glasgow’s play-off push.

FROM THE
Dwayne, first of all, great news with Scotty’s new contract?
Any news on injured players returning?
DP: “Yes, it is great news for us. Scotty will admit it probably didn’t go the way he would have liked with his move (to the Ospreys), picking up a few injuries as well. To come back home was good for him and he has excelled, he has been great for us in the environment, he has led from the front on and off the field and he’s playing week-in, week-out, getting a lot of minutes under his belt. For the group he is very good as well, we have a few young centres and with his quality there is a lot to learn from him.”
DP: “We are starting to get players filtering back into the training group from injury and over the course of the next couple of weeks, we hope to see Blade Thomson, Tomas Lezana, Rob Evans, Josh Macleod back. They are big players for us. You look at someone like Tomas, we haven’t seen the best of him yet because of injury. He was outstanding in Bordeaux and also against the Ospreys when he came on for Josh. Hopefully, we will see him getting a run of games.”
How frustrating was the Connacht defeat? DP: “It was a frustrating night. We started the game particularly well, but in the middle part of the game we slipped away, we also created some opportunities which we didn’t finish. It was disappointing not to come away with victory, but to be fair to Connacht they put pressure on us either side of half-time and forced errors and we weren’t good enough in that period of the game. We have trained well over the course of the last couple of weeks ahead of this game against Glasgow. It is an important game at home for us. We have 10 games in a row which is exciting. Glasgow home, then we go away to South Africa on Sunday.”
38
How close is Josh Macleod? DP: “He is nearing a return. It has been tough for us as a group and for him to take because everyone feels for him. He is a good man, a leader here and he is just frustrated he can’t get on the field. What is important is that he comes back when he is ready because we don’t want any further setbacks.” What are the group’s thoughts on travelling to South Africa again? DP: “It hasn’t been a massive subject for us to be honest. Clarity has been important and once we understood we had to go back it has been business as usual. Obviously, there have been requirements we have asked of URC that have been put in place, we accept we have to go back there and if I was in the shoes of the Sharks and Bulls I’d want to play at home as well. It is about getting our bags ready to go now.”

OWAIN BADGER
SCARLETS Vs glasgow warriors
THOUGHTS FROM The Emperor Hadrian and his impressive wall would have been proud of the Scarlets. In Roman times his construction straddling the whole of the North of England kept the Picts, the present-day Scots, out of the Empire for hundreds of years. Not to be outdone, the Scarlets had their own Hadrian’s Wall complex and didn’t play any side in Scotland for more than 120 years. Games against Edinburgh and tonight’s visitors Glasgow are now common and the game is richer for it. Some supporters look forward to the away games in Scotland, but for some reason the Scarlets and the committee didn’t quite see it like that. From the beginnings of the club in the 1870s to the late 1990s we never played on Scottish soil. It’s odd because the Scarlets have always been at the forefront in travelling to other countries. Matches in England (particularly in the North), Ireland and France are peppered through that 100 or so years. There were pioneering visits to South Africa and even Russia in the 1950s. Hibernia was a big no no. Some Scottish teams did play at Stradey as part of a tour of England and Wales. In the 1890s the Scarlets played Edinburgh University and Jedforest. Jedwhere? asked a local newspaper. “People are interested to know where these clever footballers come from. Well it is from Jedburgh Forest, a town on the Scottish Borders.” They even invited the Scarlets to return the fixture, to no avail. The Scarlets did have Scottish connections. One of the early club
51
secretaries was Gavin Henry, a proud Scot. Apparently he is best known for being responsible for costing the Scarlets an unbeaten season. They only lost one game in 1896-97 away to Gloucester. Gavin Henry was a touchjudge that day and so excited was he that the Scarlets had scored a winning try in the last minute that he jumped up and down waving his flag. The referee interpreted this celebration that poor Gavin was indicating a foot in touch. Goodbye unbeaten season. Apparently he was distraught for years afterwards. In the 1950s a Scottish international actually played for the Scarlets. Ian Macgregor was working at RAF Pembrey and turned out for the Scarlets for two seasons. He actually captained the side before returning to Scotland and was fondly remembered. Macgegor even suggested the Scarlets play in Scotland which prompted a distinct silence from the Scarlets committee, the same committee who a few years later accepted an invitation to play in Russia. It would be another 40 years before the Scarlets ventured to Scotland. The big change was when rugby became professional. Scottish sides played in the European Cup which meant Welsh teams had to play there. There was even for a brief time a Welsh and Scotland league which began in 1999. Since then teams like Glasgow have been regular opponents home and away.Scottish players like Sean Lamont and John Barclay have become Scarlet heroes. But it doesn’t quite explain the 120year long Hadrian’s Wall period.

Gair o Roedd Dydd Mawrth y 1af yn ddiwrnod prysur i’r Scarlets. Fe ddathlwn Ddydd Gwyl Dewi a Diwrnod Crempog, croesawn Gareth Davies nôl i Barc y Scarlets o garfan Cymru a chyhoeddwn ymestyniad ar gytundeb Scott Williams gyda’r clwb. Diwrnod da iawn ar y cyfan! Gyda’r ymateb calonogol ar-lein yn dilyn newyddion o ymrwymiad Scott i’r Scarlets, mae’n wych i weld cymaint yn ei gefnogi ac yn ei ganmol. Mae ei berfformiadau dros y tymor yma, heb anghofio derbyn dwy wobr seren y gêm yn y Bencampwriaeth Rygbi Unedig a llenwi rôl y capten yn absenoldeb Jonathan Davies, wedi profi bob un o’r amheuwyr yn anghywir ac yn sicr wedi haeddu ennill cytundeb newydd. Mae ei bresenoldeb ar y cae yn wefreiddiol. Braf yw gweld chwaraewyr a wnaeth cychwyn ei yrfa broffesiynol fel Scarlet, yn dychwelyd ac yn serennu eto o dan enw’r clwb. Pwy a wyr beth sydd i ddod yn y dyfodol i’r canolwr? Dyma’r drydydd cyhoeddiad o ymestyn cytundeb yn y garfan gyda Sam Lousi a Rhys Patchell yn nodi eu haros dros yr wythnosau diwethaf a mwy o newyddion i ddod yn y dyfodol agos. Mae’n deimlad gyffroes i fod yn rhan o’r tîm sy’n rhannu’r newyddion yma gyda’r cefnogwyr gan wybod bydd yr ymateb yn bositif, ac mae’n gyfnod cyffroes i’r cefnogwyr i weld
55
dyfodol y clwb yn datblygu trwy chwaraewyr craidd. Bydd y garfan yn teithio i Dde Affrica wythnos nesaf, ac yn dychwelyd i’r wlad ar ôl y trafferthion daeth gyda Covid-19 nôl ym mis Tachwedd llynedd. Ar ôl llawer o ansicrwydd a gorfod hunan ynysu mewn gwesty ym Melffast, mi fydd hi’n daith wahanol iawn y tro yma (gobeithiwn), gyda dwy gêm fawr i chwarae a digon o hyder yn y garfan i ddychwelyd i Lanelli yn llwyddiannus. Heno, mae Glasgow yn ymweld â’r Parc a siwr yn edrych i barhau eu rhediad llwyddiannus yn y bencampwriaeth. Mae’r her wedi cyrraedd ond mae bois y Gorllewin Gwyllt yn barod amdani. Gyda’r rhagolygon tywydd yn addo glaw, mae’n debygol o fod yn noson berffaith am gêm o rygbi ym Mharc y Scarlets!

y gair
Odych chi wedi sylwi fel ma’ mwy a mwy o gwpanau ar gael mewn rygbi rhyngwladol. Nôl yn yr oes amatur – pan oeddwn i’n grwt – doedd dim tlws na chwpan ar gyfer Pencampwriaeth y 6 Gwlad na’r 5 Gwlad cyn hynny – camp lawn ai peidio.
Ac yn sicr doedd dim tlws am ennill y Goron Driphlyg. Bryd hynny, roedd bod ar y maes i whare yn ddigon o anrhydedd (ac ambell amlen frown yn eich esgid hefyd, falle). Er taw peth cymharol ddiweddar yw Tlws y Bencampwriaeth (os y’ch chi’n ystyried bod 1993 yn “ddiweddar”) ma’ dau fersiwn ohono wedi bod. Roedd y gwreiddiol rhwng 1993 a 2014 wedi ei wneud o 15 panel o arian – un ar gyfer pob aelod o’r tîm. Mae’n amlwg nad oedd yr eilyddion yn câl lot o gydnabyddiaeth! Os odych chi’n dyfalu pam bod tair clust i’r cwpan yr esboniad yw eu bod nhw’n cynrychioli tri pherson pwysig sef y dyfarnwr a’r ddau lumanwr. Cyn dyddie’r TMO mae’n amlwg. Roedd hyd yn oed arwyddocâd i faint y cwpan, hynny yw faint oedd e’n ddala. Mae’n siwr eich bod chi gefnogwyr soffistigedig y Scarlets yn gwbod beth yw arwyddocâd 3.75 litr. Na, nid y peints bydde pob wharaewr yn yfed ar ôl y gêm. Mae’n debyg taw 3.75 litr sydd mewn 5 potel o shampên. Petai’r tlws wedi ei ddylunio yng ngorllewin Cymru mae’n siwr taw cwpan yn dala lot o beints o Felinfoel fydde fe! I arbed y drafferth o grafu enw’r wlad fuddugol ar y cwpan roedd drâr cudd yn nhroed mahogani’r tlws gyda symbol pob un o’r 6 gwlad ynddo y gellid ei sgriwio i’r caead. Uchelgeisiol eu bod nhw wedi cynnwys un yr Eidal? A dyna chi holl hanes Tlws y Pencampwriaeth.
65
Fel bydde Michael Caine wedi dweud petai e’n siarad Cymraeg “does dim lot o bobol yn gwybod hynna!” Dim yr uchod oedd yn fy meddwl i pan ddechreuais i sgwennu’r golofn hon – ond ‘na fe ma’ fe wedi llenwi hanner y dudalen! Beth oedd ‘da fi mewn golwg oedd y ffaith bod cwpanau a thlysau wedi dod yn fwy cyffredin mewn gemau rhwng dwy wlad nag am ennill cystadleuaeth gyfan fel Tlws Webb Ellis am ennill Cwpan y Byd. Wrth gwrs, ma’ ambell gwpan ar gyfer gemau unigol yn hynafol iawn. Cwpan Calcutta yw’r hynaf ohonyn nhw i gyd. 150 mlynedd yn ôl bu gêm rhwng 20 o Saeson ac 20 o Albanwyr yn Calcutta. Yn fuan wedyn ffurfiwyd Clwb Rygbi Calcutta ond pan diddymwyd y bar am ddim yn y clwb fe gwympodd nifer yr aelodau’n sylweddol. Buan iawn aeth yr hwch drwy’r siop a dim ond 270 rupees oedd ar ôl yn y banc. Sa i’n gwbod beth oedd gwerth rupee bryd hynny ond ar werthoedd heddiw dim ond £2.66 oedd yn y banc. Toddwyd y cwbwl i greu’r cwpan sy’n bodoli tan heddiw ar waetha’ ymdrechion John Jeffrey a Dean Richards i gico’r peth lawr Princes Street yn 1988. Dyna ddigon am y tro ond bydda’ i’n siwr o ddod nôl at y cwpanau eraill yn y golofn nesa.
