CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

A

fter a tough couple of results, it was great to see the boys return to winning ways with victory over our ‘nearest and dearest’ last weekend. It was a horrendous night that could have been borrowed from the middle of November, but that was an outstanding performance and how good was it to see the likes of Leigh and Foxy respond to the disappointment of missing out on Lions selection with displays at the heart of the victory. Obviously, Saturday night also saw the announcement that Glenn would be leaving us. A huge thanks to him for everything he has done for the Scarlets. As I said in our statement, he has shown nothing but wholehearted commitment during his two seasons with us and I wish him and his family well. Good luck to Dai Flanagan, who steps into the role of interim head coach this evening, as well as the rest of the coaching team as we take on Cardiff Blues for the third time this season. After back-to-back defeats in January, here’s hoping we can get a win back! As you will have seen, the remainder of the Rainbow Cup has been confirmed with matches to come against Ulster in Belfast and Edinburgh, here in Llanelli. It is fantastic news that Swansea City can have a crowd of 3,000 for their play-off match against

Barnsley at the Liberty which we will keep a close eye on. We have been keen to host a test event ourselves at Parc y Scarlets and although time is running out this season, we will try everything we can to try and get you into the Parc for that Edinburgh game. Looking ahead to next season we are excited to welcome Argentina international Tomas Lezana, who we announced as a new signing this week. Tomas is a player who has pedigree at the highest level, having been part of the Pumas squad that claimed that historic victory over the All Blacks last year. Keep an eye out for more announcements over the coming weeks, but closer to home, we continue to develop and nurture home-grown talent with Pembrokeshire product Caleb Salmon coming on board as the latest addition to our Academy. A warm welcome back to Llanelli to the Cardiff Blues, their players, coaches and staff. Hopefully, the weather will be a bit kinder than seven days ago and we can enjoy a free-flowing west v east derby. Diolch, Simon

Battling back

Rob Evans on icy waters, concussion and Wales ambitions One of the nuances of watching rugby without any fans is being able to listen to the players’ voices echoing around the stadium.

people who helped me because I am feeling a lot better now and it’s brilliant to be back out there again.”

And for the last two weeks, you haven’t been able to miss the Pembrokshire lilt of Rob Evans, back in action after a long-term absence with concussion.

It isn’t the first time Evans has spoken about dealing with concussion, a hot topic at the forefront of modern rugby.

It has been fantastic to see the Wales international loose-head on the rugby field again having not played since the Heineken Champions Cup win over Bath in December.

Two years ago, he was plagued by headaches and spoke of dark days when he was coughing up blood.

That day at The Rec, Evans provided one of the highlights of an absorbing contest, coming off the bench to provide a magical off-load for Kieran Hardy’s critical second-half score. But in the days that followed that rag-doll triumph, something didn’t feel right for Evans and it has taken him four long months of recovery to finally find his way back to playing again. He takes up the story. “I was coming back from a neck injury and I was feeling brilliant, feeling like I was hitting a bit of form, but then in the Bath week I just picked up a concussion and it knocked me for six really,” he recalls. “I hoped it wasn’t going to be as long as it has been but it did take the wind out of my sails and took a bit of time to come back from. All credit to all the

“The symptoms were different to the last time when I was having more headaches,” he explains. “This time it was more to do with balance and feeling nauseous. If I did any exercise over a certain level I felt like I was going to collapse, which isn’t nice, and then you build yourself back up to a certain level and it comes over you again. That’s probably the hardest bit. You are a little bit anxious as well because you don’t know if or when you are going to be back. “The thing with concussion is there’s no time where you know you’re going to be back, no time frame, just frustration. There is also a lot of emotion. “I was hoping to be involved in the Six Nations and you’re chasing that, but at the end of the day you got to take your time and to be fair and people remind me that you’ve only got one head!” To help with his recovery, Rob did some cold water swimming. His Instagram account shows videos of him and his Pembrokeshire buddies Josh Macleod and Kemsley Mathias braving freezing temperatures and icy waters around the coast.

“It is a big topic at the moment and everybody is working hard to change things which I think they are doing,” he adds. “I did look into it a bit, I did my own research to try and help what I can do myself so I did a lot of cold water stuff.” As well as being his swimming partner, 21-year-old Mathias is one of the young loose-heads coming through the ranks at Parc y Scarlets and along with Steff Thomas and Sam O’Connor, they have been turning heads in Llanelli. “There are a lot of exciting youngsters here and players like Kemsley and Steff want to learn all the time and are looking to take their opportunities when they come.” Asked whether the young bucks look up to the likes of Evans and Samson Lee, title winners and seasoned internationals at the Scarlets, Rob smiled: “I am not sure they look up to me, but everyone tries to help each other, that’s how it works here.” Evans played his part in a dominant 22-6 derby victory over the Ospreys last weekend,

a win that opened the Scarlets’ account in the Rainbow Cup after a testing couple of months which last weekend saw the departure of head coach Glenn Delaney. “We’re quite happy with how we managed the game and the result,” he adds. “It was obviously a bit strange afterwards with Glenn leaving but that’s the game that we’re in unfortunately. It’s sad to see him go, but things don’t stop and we’ve another big game this week. Rugby it’s a tough sport on and off the field sometimes. Yeah, it’s been tough, but you don’t have too much time to think. Dai (Flanagan) has done a great job this week taking the reins and everyone is behind him.” The marathon 2020-21 season may be coming to a close, but in these final three matches of the Rainbow Cup, Evans knows there is plenty to play for as Wales head coach Wayne Pivac ponders selection for the summer series against Canada and Argentina, now taking place in Cardiff.

“It’s been a frustrating year so it’s brilliant to be back playing and I’m feeling really good,” he continues. “I’ve played two games and am just enjoying it; I’m loving being back playing, back into the routine of the game weeks which is a lot simpler than trying to work out when you’re going to be back fit.” And Wales? “First and foremost I am very early back playing from my injury so it’s about trying to get back to a bit of form. That type of stuff is out of my hands, but obviously it’s an ambition. It’s always your ambition to play for Wales, play at the highest level, I am sure Wayne knows what he wants so that’s out of my hands. All I can do is perform for the Scarlets and do the best for the team. Whatever happens, happens.”

“It’s been a frustrating year so it’s brilliant to be back playing and I’m feeling really good”

Scarlets claim double over Ospreys in rain-soaked Rainbow Cup derby

S

carlets delivered a dominant derby performance to claim their first victory of the Rainbow Cup campaign, beating the Ospreys 22-6, at a rain-soaked Parc y Scarlets. Prop Alex Jeffries scored the only try of the match, with full-back Leigh Halfpenny delivering a typically dead-eyed goalkicking display in atrocious conditions. The platform was laid by the Scarlets pack, with skipper Ken Owens, Blade Thomson and Aaron Shingler to the fore; man of the match Kieran Hardy mixed up his game intelligently, while a muchimproved defensive display saw the visitors restricted to just two kicks at goal from fly-half Luke Price. It was the Ospreys who opened the scoring with a penalty from the boot of Price on two minutes, but the Scarlets responded strongly with Halfpenny levelling on 17 after the visitors were caught offside. The outstanding Jonathan Davies looked like he made it over the whitewash after bursting through a couple of tackles, but the television match official adjudged the Wales centre had lost the ball as he slid over the whitewash and the score was chalked off. Nevertheless, the Scarlets continued to boss proceedings.

With the Ospreys falling foul of Scottish referee Ben Blain, Halfpenny added a couple more penalties and an impressive half for the home side was capped when Jeffries crossed two minutes before the interval. A well-worked line-out move saw Davies burst onto a pass from Owens, breaking through a couple of tackles before feeding the tight-head prop on his inside. Jeffries still had plenty to do, but showed a superb turn of pace to race clear 20 metres to the whitewash to touch down against his former side. That made it 16-3 at half-time with the Scarlets seemingly in firm control. The visitors, looking for their first PRO14 win at Parc y Scarlets since 2015, did enjoy more of the game in the second period. Price reduced the arrears with a penalty and it needed some superb defence to keep the Ospreys line-out maul at bay. Another Halfpenny penalty five minutes from time extended the lead to 22-6 to ensure a comfortable victory and a seasonal double over our arch rivals.

SCARLETS 15 CARDIFF BLUES 10 - 1ST JAN 2017 - PRO12 Skipper Scott Williams crosses for a crucial second-half score as the Scarlets see off the challenge of Cardiff Blues 15-10 in a tight January encounter in 2017. The win maintained the Scarlets push towards the PRO12 play-off which eventually saw them crowned champions in Dublin.

From the Drovers to the Lions Five years ago, Wyn Jones and Tadhg Beirne could be found playing in the same Llandovery side. Five years ago, Wyn Jones and Tadhg Beirne could be found playing in the same Llandovery side. It is a long way from Test rugby when the crowd watching on is a couple of hundred hardy locals at Church Bank, but it is there that Jones and Beirne helped forge their path to international level. The pair’s stories over how they ended up a part of Euros Evans’ side couldn’t have been more different. Born and bred in Llandovery to farming stock, Jones has been a part of the town’s community his entire life. Irishman Beirne, meanwhile, had just embarked on a new chapter with the Scarlets and spent a short spell on loan at Church Bank to try and make an early impression in Welsh rugby.

“The support of the whole town of Llandovery and the rugby club especially has been massive for me,” said Jones. “I’m grateful to everyone that supports me and it spurs me on when I get messages of support before games. I got them at the World Cup and I’m sure it will be the same for the Lions. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I look back and realise five years ago I was playing for Llandovery. Now I’ve been selected for the Lions and can’t wait to get into it. “Tadhg was always going to be a class player and he was very much liked at Llandovery for his attitude and the way he played the game in his few appearances. “He was a firm favourite and hasn’t made it the easy way. It’s been the same with myself and it just shows how good a player and man Tadhg is. “I popped him a message saying ‘The Drovers made you!’ after the announcement and he replied laughing. It’s a bit of banter between us.”

The man who guided Jones and Beirne through their development at Llandovery was the club’s senior head coach Evans, a man who has helped produce countless Wales internationals. “It’s nice to see them representing Llandovery in the Lions. Wyn hasn’t come through the traditional pathway and from the regional age grade teams to the senior squad,” Evans said. “He didn’t make the regional Under-18 team at the Scarlets and wasn’t part of the academy. He was a junior Drover, played for the youth team, and then the second team. He was a tighthead at the time, but probably wasn’t strong enough at the scrum to stay there. “He was really good in the loose though so we transferred him to loosehead at 19 and sent him down to Ammanford for a year to cut his teeth. He propped with Samson Lee at Ammanford and he never looked back. As for Beirne, Evans explained: “We were desperate for a second row at Llandovery and I remember having a conversation with Jon Daniels at the Scarlets. “I said to him ‘Give us the second row who is the last one on your pecking order’ because I hoped we’d see a lot of him whoever he was. Jon said ‘There is a boy coming over from Ireland, we

don’t know much about him so you can have him!’ It was perfect for us, but Tadhg only played two games! “One was against Cardiff away who were fully loaded with players who had dropped down from regional level. We only had Tadhg from the Scarlets, but he was absolutely immense and man of the match by a mile. He turned the ball over all over the park and I knew from that moment we wouldn’t be seeing much of him and he’d soon be playing senior rugby. “He never played for us again after that! He is a genuine nice guy and enjoyed being part of the group. “He stayed in the Llandovery WhatsApp group for a long time until he left the Scarlets and things like that go a long way. The move to the Scarlets changed Tadhg’s career. He was a big part of their team which won the league. We gave him an opportunity to show what he could do and the rest is history. “We only played a small part in his career, but we’re proud nonetheless.”

CARDIFF BLUES

TODAY’S OPPOSITION C

ardiff Blues arrive in Llanelli after opening their account in the Rainbow Cup thanks to an 11th straight win over the Dragons.

The men from the capital had to do it the hard way after losing centre Owen Lane to a red card and wing Jason Harries to a yellow. However, inspired by skipper Josh Turnbull they managed to turn things around thanks to a late converted score by replacement lock Teddy Williams. Director of rugby Dai Young said: “You have to be pleased with the character and it was certainly a game of two halves. The first 35 minutes, I thought we were excellent but going into half-time I was disappointed we didn’t have a bigger lead. “Then, when you get a red card its backs against the wall. I thought some of our character was outstanding, we had something like six to seven minutes in our 22 defending but we had a couple of important turnovers because if they got another score it may have been a mountain too high to climb.

back-rower Turnbull, Young added: “He’s had a fantastic season and his minutes are right up there so he’s played a big part and a lot of games. He’s robust as well as consistent and good both sides of the ball. He carries strongly, always leads the line in defence and gets the important turnovers. He’s also a leader so I’m really pleased with Josh but also the way we as a team found a way to win.”

“I’m really pleased with the character and the way we found a way to win but disappointed with some of the discipline, which brought the Dragons into the game.” Commenting on the performance of former Scarlets

Blues will be targeting a third win over the Scarlets this season after claiming a 29-20 victory at the Cardiff City Stadium in early January, then following that up by edging a tight contest 13-10 in Llanelli.

The law trials were proposed by the PRO14’s Sports & Regulatory Committee and will present teams with new dynamics that allow for positive play and enhanced decisionmaking outcomes. These law variations are already in use across Super Rugby Aotearoa and Super Rugby AU and their use has been encouraged by World Rugby to improve the game.

Law variation trials explained Replacement for Red Card player after 20 minutes For red cards the offending player will be removed from the field for 20 minutes. After this time the team can replace this player with one of their nominated substitutes. The player who is given the red card will not be able to return to the pitch. Just like the awarding of a yellow card, the 20 minutes will be measured in ‘game time’ meaning that the clock will not run during stoppages in play. The Red Card Replacement law will also apply to players who receive two yellow cards (which results in an automatic red). Players who have been substituted for tactical reasons may be used to replace a player who has received a red card. The usual replacement laws continue to apply in that a replaced player may return for an injured front rower, injury due to foul play, HIA or blood. Captain’s Challenge The Captain’s Challenge is aimed at enhancing the accuracy of decisions already under the remit of the match officials. Each team is allowed one captain’s challenge in the match. These can be used for try-scoring and foul play incidents, or to challenge any refereeing decision in the last five minutes of a match. The challenge will be referred to the TMO who will review the footage with the match referee making the final decision. If a challenge is

successful, then the team keeps their challenge but if it is unsuccessful then the team loses the challenge. Challenges can only be made up to 20 seconds after the referee has blown his whistle for a stoppage in play and only incidents from the last passage of play can be challenged. Prior to the 75-minute mark, the Captain’s Challenge can only be used to check for an infringement in the lead up to a try or to review foul play. The Captain’s Challenge will be applied more broadly from the 75-minute mark in any match at which point the captain, provided they have not already lost their Challenge, can use it to check any whistled decision regardless of whether a try has been scored. Injury time is included in the post 75-minute period. For the avoidance of doubt, there is no extra challenge available after 75 minutes. Teams receive one challenge per match and will only retain it if they are successful in a previous challenge. Goal-line drop-out For held-up over the line, knock-ons that occur in goal or when the ball is grounded by a defending player in the in-goal area after a kick through, the defending team will take a drop-out from anywhere on the goal line. The drop-out must be taken on or behind the defending team’s goal line and it must occur without delay. The ball must cut across the goal line and travel 5 metres. If this does not occur a sanction will apply and the non-kicking team may request the kick to be retaken or receive a 5m scrum in line with where the kick was taken. For the avoidance of doubt, a missed penalty kick at goal or a missed drop-goal attempt will still result in a 22m drop-out for the defending team.

carlets have signed Argentina international Tomas Lezana from Western Force for next season.

The 27-year-old can play across the back row and has 39 Test caps for the Pumas to his name. A dynamic carrier with an outstanding workrate, Lezana made his international debut against France in Paris in 2014 and came off the bench in Argentina’s historic victory over the All Blacks last year. He has played for the Jaguares in Super Rugby and has this season been playing for the Force in Super Rugby AU. Lezana, who stands at 6ft 1in and weighs in at 104kg, will provide further options to the Scarlets back row and is equally comfortable at blindside and openside flanker. “We are delighted to have secured the signing of Tomas for next season,” said general manager of rugby Jon Daniels. “Tomas has played at the top level with the Pumas and also has a huge amount of experience in Super Rugby. “He is someone who will give us an extra carrying threat and he is renowned for his high defensive stats and workrate. “With Josh Macleod still recovering from his Achilles injury and James Davies also working his way back to fitness, we feel we needed to bolster our back-row resources ahead of next season and are looking

forward to welcoming Tomas to Parc y Scarlets.” Lezana said: “It is an honour for me to be joining a side with the great history and traditions of the Scarlets. Having played in Super Rugby with the Jaguares and Force I am looking forward to testing myself in northern hemisphere rugby and playing at the top level of European competition. “Scarlets have some great players in the squad, players who I have come up against at Test level and I can’t wait to meet up with the boys and get started.” Lezana becomes the Scarlets second signing following the capture of tight-head prop WillGriff John from Sale Sharks. Scarlets have also announced the re-signing of internationals Wyn Jones, Blade Thomson, Ryan Elias and Aaron Shingler as well as Carwyn Tuipulotu, Morgan Jones and Javan Sebastian.

“It is an honour for me to be joining a side with the great history and traditions of the Scarlets. Having played in Super Rugby with the Jaguares and Force I am looking forward to testing myself in northern hemisphere rugby and playing at the top level of European competition.”

Scarlets 35 Cardiff Blues 17 Magners League; March 21, 2008 (Stradey Park)

FROM THE VAULT L

lanelli Scarlets kept their slim Magners League title hopes alive with a crushing bonus point victory over rivals Cardiff Blues at Stradey Park.

Ben Blair’s second conversion, like his first, was good but the Scarlets proved how desperate they want to succeed domestically as another great break set up their second try.

The Scarlets scored 20 unanswered points in an emphatic second-half display with Wales fly-half Stephen Jones kicking 15 points.

Morgan Stoddart showed Grand Slam-winner Lee Byrne there is a rival to his Wales full-back throne as he broke free to allow centre Gavin Evans score his first try of the season.

Jamie Roberts and Scott Morgan scored to give the Blues a half-time lead, but Dwayne Peel and Dafydd James scored after the break to add to tries from Iestyn Thomas and Gavin Evans. The Blues, whose number one target is Europe this season, have not won on the road in the Magners League since their victory at the Dragons six months ago. And this defeat seriously dents their title chances while the Scarlets leapfrog the Arms Park side into second place in the table behind runaway leaders Leinster, who also secured a bonus victory on Friday against Glasgow. Dai Young rested his Welsh Grand Slam stars for their visit to Stradey as the Blues coach has one eye on their crucial Heineken Cup quarter-final clash in Toulouse on April 6. But while Tom Shanklin, Martyn Williams and Gethin Jenkins put their feet up, another Welsh international took his chance and actually gave the Blues an early breakthrough in Llanelli. Rookie winger Jamie Roberts collected former Wales captain Gareth Thomas’ deft off-load five yards from the line to dive over in the corner. But a break from centre sensation Regan King gave the Scarlets a quick riposte. And some trademark quick thinking from Peel at a ruck, laid it on a plate for prop Iestyn Thomas to bulldozer his way over in the 11th minute for his second score in three games. The Blues were clearly not affected by the hosts’ quick response as lock Scott Morgan almost immediately crashed over for his first try of the campaign.

A Stephen Jones conversion was followed up by a superb penalty from the veteran Wales fly-half who dragged the Scarlets back into a thrilling encounter, despite being down to 14 men as lock Adam Eustace was in the sin bin. Kiwi Blair’s penalty ensured Cardiff an interval lead but the Scarlets’ international half-back combination sought to it that the visitors’ lead did not last long. A routine penalty from Stephen Jones was quickly followed up by an interception try from his long-time partner in crime Peel. The Lions star capitalised on a loose Blair pass to gallop from inside the 10 metre line for his first try since he revealed he would leaving his beloved Stradey for Sale Sharks at the end of the season. Stephen Jones, as he has done for so long for both club and country, complimented his good friend with an immaculate conversion. Experienced winger Dafydd James rounded off the Scarlets’ success as he finished a flowing move started by the excellent Stephen Jones. Stoddart and King could have made the victory more comprehensive, nevertheless the win sets up an enthralling top-of-the-table showdown with Leinster at Stradey.

THOUGHTS FROM THE HALFWAY H

ow unusual, a three o’clock kick off on a Saturday. How usual, it will be played in an empty Parc y Scarlets stadium because of ongoing Covid rules. Today’s derby against old rivals Cardiff will still be very competitive, it’s just the teams will have to conjure up their own atmosphere because of the lack of fans. A game due scheduled to be played against the two teams 60 years ago can top that. In November 1960 several groups of fans travelled up to Cardiff to support the Scarlets against the Blue and Blacks. The two sides were playing on the same day that Swansea were to meet the Springboks at St.Helen’s. To avoid the clash the Scarlets tried to rearrange the game for the Friday evening, but Cardiff disagreed. On the Saturday the team and their supporters turned up at the Arms Park to be greeted by a “match off” sign on the gates. Cardiff never apologised. That Cardiff game in 1960 was something of a grudge match anyway. As was the pattern that the Scarlets had lost one of their star players, centre Brian Davies to Cardiff at the start of the season. The lure of the capital city has attracted many Scarlets players over the years. A few seasons later there was even greater uproar when two of the outstanding Scarlets three-quarters D.Ken Jones and Robert Morgan joined Cardiff. Later in the sixties another Scarlets hero, a young Barry John went East and became a rugby legend. Luckily for the Scarlets he was replaced by another mercurial outside-half, Phil Bennett. A few players did come west from Cardiff over the years but the traffic was invariably one way. These days with the advent of professionalism the transfer of players between the rivals continues. Rhys Patchell came to the Scarlets from Cardiff

and players like Josh Turnbull went the other way. Turnbull is a product of the very successful Scarlet youth and Academy system. It has produced so many talented players over the last ten years that all the Welsh regions and some teams in the English Premiership have stars from the Scarlets Academy. Supporters might complain about releasing young players, but the truth is the Scarlets can’t keep everybody happy so some very talented people have to be released to other clubs. The downside of success. So today’s Cardiff squad for the game will include Josh Turnbull, Kirby Myhill and Josh Adams all former Scarlet Academy players. They will be joined next season by one of the most successful Academy players of all Rhys Priestland. As a youngster Rhys played the first ever game played at Parc y Scarlets. It was on November 15, 2008. Llanelli RFC, the town team not the Scarlets, beat Cardiff, not the Blues, 32-3. For a Welsh Premiership game there was a huge attendance of 4,800. A young centre by the name of Jonathan Davies, who was also to go on the greater things, scored a try. After the game he was quoted as saying that win as a “perfect performance for a perfect stadium.” Let’s hope that the stadium will see another perfect performance today even though we can’t be there to see it. Cardiff, I am sure, will turn up this time.

FROM THE PRESS ROOM

Interim head coach Dai Flanagan speaks to the media INTERIM HEAD COACH DAI FLANAGAN SAT DOWN TO SPEAK TO THE MEDIA AHEAD OF SATURDAY’S RAINBOW CUP CLASH WITH CARDIFF BLUES. Dai, has it been a strange position to find yourself in this week? DF: “It is a little bit different, a bit busier than my normal schedule! The players have been excellent, the senior players have really gathered around me. They lead the group, which is important. We got told after the game and to be fair the club spoke to me about the end of the season and the plan for the next six weeks for myself. We are all disappointed, Glenn is a top human being and has been excellent to me. When he and Brad came in, I learned loads off both of them; they are good people and they have been excellent to me so it is disappointing on that front.” How are you approaching the next six weeks? DF: “It is derby week this week, a big week and we are planning to give some youngsters some rugby, players who have been in the squad and who will be important to us next year and haven’t played much. Someone like Ioan Nicholas, who is pumped about playing this weekend. He is champing at the bit and has been outstanding since returning from injury.” What have you had to say to the players? DF: “As I said, we’ve got a great group of senior players. They have been excellent, they have gathered round and I have leant on them to lead on the messages. They are all disappointed, Glenn is a great guy and they are going to look to put on a show this weekend to recognise that.”

Are you looking forward to Dwayne Peel coming in? DF: “I have got a relationship with Dwayne from previous because of my relationship with Steve (Jones). Everything I have spoken to Dwayne on he has been outstanding. He is a Scarlets guy through and through and you can see by speaking to him how passionate he is about the place.” What do you expect from Cardiff Blues? DF: Cardiff have some quality players, you look at their half-backs and then talent on the edge with Josh Adams, Matthew Morgan and Hallam Amos. They are going to front up, which they always do. They are well coached by Richard Hodges and they buy into the defence and structure. It is important we match that, which we probably didn’t do in January, they won that battle. We have to play smart but also match the physicality they are going to bring.” How has Jon Davies reacted to his Lions disappointment? DF: “There’s no harder worker in the club than Jon. He’s been brewing along and his performances have been getting better and better. He also helps the younger boys, the likes of Joe Roberts, Tyler Morgan. He was disappointed, you could see it in his face, but he was the first guy to congratulate his team-mates and that’s the mark of the man. The boys have also been excellent with him. There’s a lot of empathy with what he’s had to go through in the past few years with his injury and the effort he’s put in to try and get on that flight to South Africa. It’s not over for Foxy, an injury or a niggle and he can play his way back in and he knows that. There’s no better 13 in the world when he’s on form and he’s excited to go prove some people wrong.”

Favourite Scarlets player? Does it count if we say any player showing us a cheeky OPRO grin? But if we were to choose it’d be Liam Williams aka Sanjay, good runner, fantastic defender and notorious bomb defuser. What are you looking forward to this season? Looking forward to seeing Ken Owens, Liam Williams, Gareth Davies and Wyn Jones playing for the British & Irish Lions.

awr bod miri’r 6 Gwlad drosodd m dymor arall, un o’r pethe sydd wedi bod yn llenwi colofnau rygbi’r papure newydd – papure Lloeger gan fwya’ wrth gwrs – yw dyfodol yr Eidal fel aelod llawn o’r gystadleuaeth. Ar un olwg, gallwch chi ddeall hynny. Wedi’r cyfan dyw tîm sydd wedi ennill dim ond 12 mâs o’r 110 gêm ers ymuno ‘da’r gystadleuaeth yn 2000 ddim ar yr un lefel â’r gweddill odyn nhw? Mae’n wir eu bod nhw wedi ennill dwy gêm yn yr un tymor ar ddau achlysur. Ond ma’ wyth mlynedd ers iddyn nhw wneud hynny. Ma’ 6 mlynedd ers eu buddugoliaeth ola’ sy’n golygu bod yr Eidal wedi colli 30 gêm o’r bron rhwng 2016 a 2021. ‘Falle bod y ffaith i 7 o’r deuddeg buddugoliaeth ddod yn erbyn yr Alban yn dweud rhywbeth am gryfder tîm rhyngwladol y wlad honno yn yr unfed ganrif ar hugain hefyd. Ond stori arall yw honno. Mewn gwirionedd, sa’ i’n gwbod pam bod pobol yn codi cwestiwn am ddyfodol yr Eidal nawr. Ar wahân i’r ffaith nad oes gwlad arall yn hemisffer y gogledd sydd lan i safon y 6 Gwlad – a chofiwch nad yw Georgia erioed wedi curo’r Eidal – ma’ penderfyniad y 6 Gwlad i werthu 14.3% o’u heiddo i gwmni ecwiti preifat CVC Capital Partners yn mynd i gadw’r Eidal yn rhan o’r gystadleuaeth tan o leiaf 2026. A bydd tua £30 miliwn yn help mawr Undeb Rygbi’r Eidal i ddatblygu cenhedlaeth newydd o wharaewyr fydd yn gallu dal eu tir yn erbyn y gweddill. Os taw methu ennill gemau yw’r esgus dros gael gwared ar yr Eidal mae’n bosib na

fydde ni wedi cael cystadleuaeth y 5 Gwlad yn y lle cynta’. Pan ymunodd Ffrainc yn ffurfiol i greu’r 5 Gwlad yn 1910 dim ond un gêm – yn erbyn yr Alban yn 1911 – enillon nhw tan i’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf rhoi stop ar bethe. Mâs o’r 48 gêm rhwng 1920, pan ailgydiwyd yn y gystadleuaeth, a 1931 dim ond 10 gwaith llwyddodd Ffrainc i ennill. Tybed a oedd y papure’r cyfnod ‘ny yn llawn erthygle yn galw am gael gwared o Ffrainc o’r gystadleuaeth? Dychmygwch faint o rygbi gwefreiddiol fydden ni wedi colli petai hynny wedi digwydd. Onid Les Bleus wharaeodd y rygbi perta’ yn ystod y tymor eleni? Ond y gwir yw bod Ffrainc wedi cael eu towlu mâs o bencampwriaeth y 5 Gwlad yn 1932. Nid am eu bod nhw methu ennill – er cyn waethed oedd eu record rhyngwladol (heblaw am ennill y fedal arian yng Ngemau Olympaidd 1924) – ond o achos sawl ffactor. Yn gyntaf, roedd y gystadleuaeth rhwng y clybie’n bwysicach iddyn nhw na llwyddiant y tîm rhyngwladol. Yn ail, roedd y whare brwnt yn y gystadleuaeth honno i’w weld hefyd ar y maes rhyngwladol yn enwedig yn erbyn Cymru yn 1930. Ond yr hyn ddaeth â’r cyfan i ben oedd y drosedd waetha’ un yn y cyfnod sef bod wharaewyr yn cael eu talu am whare. Roedd hi’n 1947 cyn i Ffrainc gael ail fynediad i’r 5 Gwlad. Ma’ lot y gallwn i ddweud am rygbi yn Ffrainc yn union cyn yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Falle cewch chi’r hanes y tymor nesa’.
