CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

W

hat a proud moment for everyone associated with our great club to hear the names of four of our players read out as part of the British & Irish Lions squad touring South Africa this summer.

But we once again finished the Guinness PRO14 season as the leading Welsh side, made the knockout stages of the Champions Cup and have qualified for the top tier of Europe again next season.

We have an incredible tradition here of Scarlets wearing the coveted red jersey of the Lions.

This Rainbow Cup competition is offering us the chance to lay the foundations for next season and it has been fantastic to see so many of our young players handed their opportunity. Good luck to Joe Roberts, another of our home-grown talents, who is set to make his PRO14 debut this evening.

Our historian Les Williams, who has kept an incredible archive on all things Scarlet, provided us with a list this week of those who have represented the Lions while part of this club. There are some icons of the game in there, Benny, Delme, JJ, Grav, Ieuan Evans, Scott Quinnell and I am sure you will join me in congratulating Ken, Wyn, Liam and Gareth Davies on their achievement in being selected in the class of 2021. It is just a shame that you, the fans, can’t be here to congratulate the boys in person. In terms of crowds returning to Parc y Scarlets, even though Covid restrictions have eased, it looks increasingly likely that we won’t be welcoming spectators through the turnstiles at the Parc until the start of next season. It is disappointing for all of us, but something, unfortunately, that is beyond our control. It has been a challenging season on many levels and we can’t hide from the fact there have been disappointments.

Once again, a huge thank you to the fans for supporting from afar, the game doesn’t exist without the fans and it’s been tough without you here, Thanks to so many of you for supporting the social media blackout last weekend in the continued fight against online abuse and hate. There is no place for it in sport and society as a whole and hopefully the campaign will help to trigger change. We have three more games remaining. We will be saying goodbye to a number of bois as well as looking forward to welcoming a few new ones into the squad for next season. Enjoy what promises to be another fierce derby battle. COACH’S MESSAGE T

here must be something in the water down west because it is an incredible breeding ground for Lions.

We are immensely proud to be one of the best represented clubs once again and huge congratulations to Ken, Wyn, Sanj and Gareth on being named in Warren’s 37-man squad to be taking on the world champions in South Africa this summer. It is an amazing achievement for them and their families and I couldn’t be prouder of the guys. It was a great day on Thursday, although bittersweet in some ways because we had others who didn’t make it. We are a close group here, everyone is treated as equal and for all the elation for the four that were named, we all really felt for those that were in the hunt and didn’t make it. Yes, they are disappointed, but they are great men who have done wonderful things in the game and ultimately, they will work through that disappointment and make sure they are ready to go if they are required. The guys have responded how you would expect them to and are ready to get back on the horse this evening in a big derby match against the Ospreys. Once again, we will see a couple of more of our talented youngsters getting their opportunity this evening. We need to expose more guys to game time who simply haven’t had it throughout this season. If you look at the season as a whole, we wanted to make sure we made into the knockout stages of Europe and qualify for next season’s Champions Cup, which we have done. This competition is an opportunity to grow the squad in a year where there has been no real rugby for some guys.

It is vital that we increase our strength in depth. We have had 10 of our guys come through from our Academy to make their debuts this season which is always a massive sense of pride. The only way the lads are going to get better is to play and we have to put them in contests and trust them. Each time we have turned to them they have delivered. We have a wonderful pathway and are confident and prepared to expose these boys in these games. A couple of boys have returned after enjoying some game-time in the Championship in readiness for the Rainbow Cup and it is great to see Joe Roberts set to make his PRO14 debut this evening. Hopefully, the weather won’t be as bad as has been forecast this week and we can all enjoy a great game with high calibre players on show. Diolch Glenn

PLAYER PROFILE

A coffee break to remember for Wyn Jones ‘Surreal’ was the apt description Wyn Jones used to sum up the events of Thursday lunchtime.

It is well documented that Wyn didn’t come through the traditional pathway towards international rugby.

Picture the scene: the Scarlets squad have just finished training in preparation for this evening’s Rainbow Cup derby against the Ospreys.

His front-row education was honed at Llandovery RFC with the Drovers; the farmer’s son building a reputation as a powerful scrummager not prepared to take a backward step in an unforgiving environment.

The players head different ways, most of the squad make their way to the cafe to watch Jason Leonard announce the 37 names selected for the British & Irish Lions tour this summer. Wyn? He jumps in his car and pops to the Starbucks drive-through for a coffee! “Watching the video and finding out in that manner is quite nerve-racking,” he admitted after returning to Parc y Scarlets. ‘I jumped in the car after training, didn’t have time to have a shower, grabbed a coffee and watched it in the car on my own. That’s all you can do, just wait for your name to be called out. You can’t do any more, it is out of your hands. “It’s just a huge privilege to be named. I am chuffed to bits and can’t wait to get involved. “When you start playing U7s it is probably something you can only dream of. To be named for the Lions is massive and probably will take a bit of time to sink in.”

That caught the eye of the Scarlets and he made his senior debut in an Anglo-Welsh Cup clash against Gloucester in 2014. Seven years on, after a Six Nations campaign where he was the outstanding player in his position, he is being talked about by many as the favourite to wear the No. 1 jersey in what promises to be a sensational Test series against the world champion Springboks. You won’t find Wyn shouting from the rooftops however, his feet are firmly planted on his beloved West Wales turf. In a recent interview during the Six Nations, his good friend and fellow Llandovery product Emyr Phillips was asked about the player popularly known within the squad as ‘Sausage’.

“I still don’t think he realises how good a player he is”, said Phillips, himself a Wales international. “He’s the sort of player that once he has four or five performances, you don’t want to leave him out. He values the scrum, the contact area and everything he does above that is a bonus. It’s only when he’s injured that you realise how much he brings to the team. He was exceptional for Wales in this Six Nations. “He has a bit of a diesel engine on him so he’ll go all day but he’ll always give you a platform. If the bare minimum is parity, a few jackals, 10-15 tackles and a few carries, it’s a good benchmark. It’s funny, because I wouldn’t call him a natural sportsman; he’s terrible at pool, not the best footballer and an average darts player but rugby-wise, you see the passes out of the back, the support play, he’s got it all.”

“His Uni days helped him put on a bit of weight, probably from drinking beer in the pubs”, he added. “Wyn does like to enjoy himself, he’s not a puritan but I still think he’s got the balance just right. He has those oldschool propping values and knows when to switch it on and switch it off. “When Wyn was young, I stepped down from the Scarlets and remember myself, Wyn and Pete the Meat would play for Llandovery. He had a tough couple of afternoons when he was a lot lighter and his technique wasn’t as refined so those learning in those environments have helped him come through.” And come through his has, to the pinnacle of his trade. When four Scarlets were named in Warren Gatland’s squad on Thursday, it equalled the

previous best by the club set in 1974 when Phil Bennett, JJ Williams, Roy Bergiers and Tom David headed to the Rainbow Nation with the squad that were to be known as the Invincibles. Ken Owens joked that Wyn might need a bit of looking after in South Africa when his first official bit of Lions duty - a live media call with Jamie George - was missed because he was taking that shower he put off to head to Starbucks. But you can be certain, Wyn won’t need bodyguarding on the field. And how good will it be to see the boys from Llandovery and Carmarthen packing down together - as they have done for Scarlets and Wales - in the red of the Lions this summer.

“It’s just a huge privilege to be named. I am chuffed to bits and can’t wait to get involved.”

Dragons celebrate Rainbow Cup victory in Rodney Parade try fest

S

carlets were left to rue defensive lapses as they fell to a 52-32 defeat to the Dragons in a freescoring Rainbow Cup clash at Rodney Parade. Twelve tries were scored in an entertaining Sunday lunchtime clash, but despite leading at half-time, the Scarlets came off second best to an inspired Dragons side who were good value for their win. Scrum-half Dane Blacker put in a standout display, scoring one of the Scarlets’ five tries, while captain Ryan Elias led from the front. But it was the Dragons who opened up their account in the new competition with a maximum haul.

Needing to hit back quickly, Scarlets manufactured their way back into the contest on 31 minutes with a well-worked score for Steff Evans. Angus O’Brien, on for Tom Rogers, sliced through, found the impressive Blacker who gave the try-scoring pass to his winger. Blacker then got himself on the scoresheet with a lovely solo try to give the Scarlets the lead for the first time. It could have been more when skipper Elias took a short pass, dummied and crashed over, only for the score to be chalked off for a forward pass. That made the scoreline 22-17 at the interval, a lead that wasn’t to last long.

The home side were on the scoreboard after just four minutes with the outstanding Jonah Holmes making full use of the wide channels to fend off Jonathan Davies to cross.

Dragons pivot Davies landed a penalty three minutes after the restart then flying wing Rio Dyer finished off a flowing move for the bonuspoint score.

The response from the Scarlets was immediate, though.

The half got worse for the visitors as centre Aneurin Owen and player of the match Holmes added further tries, leaving the West Walians with a mountain to climb in the final quarter.. Steff Evans darted over for his second and when Johnny McNicholl intercepted and raced 50 metres with 10 minutes remaining, hope was rekindled.

From the kick-off Holmes lost the ball in contact, Steff Evans pounced and back-rower Iestyn Rees was on hand to take the spring pass on his Scarlets debut. Sam Costelow converted. It was frantic stuff in the early exchanges with the Dragons enjoying the better of territory and possession. The home side’s reward was a score by former Scarlet Jordan Williams, converted off the upright by Sam Davies. Costelow reduced the advantage with a penalty from straight in front, but the Dragons were soon celebrating a third try courtesy of rampaging Wales flanker Aaron Wainwright.

But that was snuffed out by the Dragons in the closing exchanges. Wainwright claimed his second from a line-out drive then Davies added two further penalties to secure the victory.

SCARLETS 40 OSPREYS 17 - 6 May 2017 - PRO12 Aaron Shingler pumps the air as he runs in Scarlets’ third try in a thumping 40-17 victory over the Ospreys to wrap up the 2016-17 regular season. Scarlets went on to beat Leinster in the semi-final in Dublin and then Munster in a memorable final a week later at the Aviva Stadium.

LIONS SQUAD ANNOUNCED

Fantastic four get Lions call to South Africa Scarlets will provide a club recordequalling four players to the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa this summer. Captain Ken Owens, loose-head prop Wyn Jones, scrum-half Gareth Davies and full-back Liam Williams have been named in Warren Gatland’s 36-man squad heading to the Rainbow Nation. The class of 2021 are following in the footsteps of some of the greats of the game who have worn the Scarlets jersey and red of the Lions. Those include Delme Thomas, who toured in 1966, 1968 and 1971, current club president and Lions icon Phil Bennett, part of the Invincibles squad that conquered South Africa in 1974 and who skippered the tourists to New Zealand in 1977; the legendary Ray Gravell, a Test Lion against the Boks in 1980 and more recently Ieuan Evans, Dafydd James, Scott Quinnell, Dwayne Peel, Stephen Jones, Simon Easterby, Matthew Rees and George North. The Scarlets also had four Lions on the allconquering tour to South Africa in 1974 - Phil

Bennett, JJ Williams, Derek Quinnell and Roy Bergiers. In all, 29 Scarlets have represented the cream of Britain and Ireland, dating back to Ivor Jones, who played five Tests and made a remarkable 20 appearances on the five-month long tour of New Zealand and Australia in 1930. RH Williams has played the most Lions Tests - 10 in 1955 and 1959 - Delme Thomas has the most appearances in a Lions jersey, playing 44 times across his three tours, while Phil Bennett boasts the most points for a Scarlet with 228 to his name. Seven players, WH Clement (1938), Alun Thomas (1955), Terry Price (1966), Roy Bergiers (1974), Tom David (1974), Peter Morgan (1980) and Robin McBryde (2001), played on tour but were not capped in Tests, while Gareth Davies was called up as part of Warren Gatland’s infamous ‘Geography Six’ four years ago, but didn’t get on the field, twice being an unused replacement. “It’s been a nerve-wracking couple of days, I tried noy to think about it too much, but chuffed ot be named in the squad.

“We are all local boys, played junior rugby at NEwcastle Emlyn, back in those days the Lions was the ultimate goal and now I get a chance to go to South Africa and represent the British & Irish Lions. It is a massive honour for myself and my family,” said Gareth Davies.

*Scott Quinnell was picked for the 1997 tour while at Richmond, Stephen Jones in 2005 while at Clermont Auvergne and George North in 2017 while at Northampton Saints. Gareth Davies was called up for the 2017 tour but was an unused replacement twice. Stats courtesy of Scarlets historian Les Williams

OSPREYS RUGBY

TODAY’S OPPOSITION O

spreys kicked off their Rainbow Cup campaign with a comfortable 36-14 victory over Cardiff Blues, but the Liberty Stadium victory was marred by a serious knee injury to Wales international George North which has ruled him out of this summer’s British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa. North, who began his professional career at Parc y Scarlets, has enjoyed an impressive campaign, having enjoyed the switch to outside centre at Test level. But having ruptured an ACL against the Blues, he has undergone surgery and is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines. It is a huge blow to club and country, but in the short term head coach Toby Booth will have plenty of youthful options in midfield as he looks to maintain his side’s momentum.

Among those to stand out at the Liberty was full-back Mat Protheroe, who has caught the eye since his move from Bristol Bears last summer.

Reflecting on the bonus-point win over their capital city rivals, Booth said: “It wasn’t perfect, we didn’t get everything right there so there’s improvement in us, but when we did, I thought we looked a potent side, especially in the back three. We put our best foot forward and tried to be positive and we got some reward from that.”

Ospreys finished the regular season with a shock victory over champions Leinster at the RDS, which secured third spot in Conference A and their place in next season’s Heineken Champions Cup alongside the Scarlets. They were eliminated in the round of 16 of the 202021 Challenge Cup following a loss to Newcastle Falcons in Swansea.

The law trials were proposed by the PRO14’s Sports & Regulatory Committee and will present teams with new dynamics that allow for positive play and enhanced decisionmaking outcomes. These law variations are already in use across Super Rugby Aotearoa and Super Rugby AU and their use has been encouraged by World Rugby to improve the game.

Law variation trials explained Replacement for Red Card player after 20 minutes For red cards the offending player will be removed from the field for 20 minutes. After this time the team can replace this player with one of their nominated substitutes. The player who is given the red card will not be able to return to the pitch. Just like the awarding of a yellow card, the 20 minutes will be measured in ‘game time’ meaning that the clock will not run during stoppages in play. The Red Card Replacement law will also apply to players who receive two yellow cards (which results in an automatic red). Players who have been substituted for tactical reasons may be used to replace a player who has received a red card. The usual replacement laws continue to apply in that a replaced player may return for an injured front rower, injury due to foul play, HIA or blood. Captain’s Challenge The Captain’s Challenge is aimed at enhancing the accuracy of decisions already under the remit of the match officials. Each team is allowed one captain’s challenge in the match. These can be used for try-scoring and foul play incidents, or to challenge any refereeing decision in the last five minutes of a match. The challenge will be referred to the TMO who will review the footage with the match referee making the final decision. If a challenge is

successful, then the team keeps their challenge but if it is unsuccessful then the team loses the challenge. Challenges can only be made up to 20 seconds after the referee has blown his whistle for a stoppage in play and only incidents from the last passage of play can be challenged. Prior to the 75-minute mark, the Captain’s Challenge can only be used to check for an infringement in the lead up to a try or to review foul play. The Captain’s Challenge will be applied more broadly from the 75-minute mark in any match at which point the captain, provided they have not already lost their Challenge, can use it to check any whistled decision regardless of whether a try has been scored. Injury time is included in the post 75-minute period. For the avoidance of doubt, there is no extra challenge available after 75 minutes. Teams receive one challenge per match and will only retain it if they are successful in a previous challenge. Goal-line drop-out For held-up over the line, knock-ons that occur in goal or when the ball is grounded by a defending player in the in-goal area after a kick through, the defending team will take a drop-out from anywhere on the goal line. The drop-out must be taken on or behind the defending team’s goal line and it must occur without delay. The ball must cut across the goal line and travel 5 metres. If this does not occur a sanction will apply and the non-kicking team may request the kick to be retaken or receive a 5m scrum in line with where the kick was taken. For the avoidance of doubt, a missed penalty kick at goal or a missed drop-goal attempt will still result in a 22m drop-out for the defending team.

CLUB LEGEND RETURNS

Dwayne Peel appointed head coach ahead of 2021-2022 season

S

carlets great Dwayne Peel is to rejoin his home club as head coach ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Peel is regarded as one of the finest players to have pulled on the Scarlets jersey having played 151 matches during nine seasons at Stradey Park.

“Dwayne understands what the Scarlets is all about, he knows the ‘Scarlets Way’ and he is hugely excited about coming back to West Wales to take up this role in the coaching team.

Hailing from Tumble in the Gwendraeth Valley, Peel was capped 76 times at scrum-half for Wales and was a Test starter with the British & Irish Lions in New Zealand in 2005.

“Dwayne’s appointment is part of our long-term planning to further strengthen our team off the field and I am sure everyone associated with the Scarlets will be excited by what he will bring. We wish Dwayne well for his final couple of months with Ulster and look forward to welcoming him back to the Scarlets in the summer.”

Following spells with Sale Sharks and Bristol, Peel hung up his playing boots to become part of Bristol’s coaching team before taking up a role as assistant coach with Ulster in 2017.

Dwayne Peel said: “The Scarlets has always meant a massive amount to me and my family and I’m thrilled to be returning to my home club as head coach.

Peel’s appointment will see current head coach Glenn Delaney take up the position of director of rugby.

“I have been part of some incredible occasions with the Scarlets during my time at Stradey and I know everyone involved with the club has ambitions to be challenging regularly for silverware and competing with the top sides in Europe.

Scarlets executive chairman Simon Muderack said: “It is fantastic news for Scarlets fans that a legend of the club like Dwayne is coming home. His outstanding playing career speaks for itself, but he has also become a widely-respected coach during spells with Bristol and more recently Ulster.

“As a player, I have experienced first hand the passion of the Scarlets fans, there is a special bond between the supporters and the club and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone back at Parc y Scarlets next season.”

PLAYER SIGNING

Blade signs new Scarlets contract

B

lade Thomson has signed a new contract to stay at Parc y Scarlets. The versatile back-rower, capped 10 times by Scotland, arrived in Llanelli from Super Rugby side the Hurricanes in 2018. He has made 31 appearances, earning himself an international call-up to Gregor Townsend’s Scotland squad. Blade appeared for the Scots at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and has delivered some impressive displays in a Scarlets jersey this season. “It is fantastic that Blade has signed a new deal with the Scarlets,” said head coach Glenn Delaney. “Blade is a real athlete, a player who can produce game-changing moments as he showed in our derby win over the Ospreys over Christmas. “He has proven himself at international level, is a player who has a lot of experience in Super Rugby and has grown into an important and influential member of our squad”

Commenting on the new deal, Blade, 30, said: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract with the Scarlets. “Ever since myself and my family have arrived here, we have been made to feel welcome by everyone at the Scarlets, team-mates, staff and supporters. “It has been a tough season for a number of reasons, but there is a huge amount of quality in the squad - experienced internationals and talented young players who have stepped up and made their mark. “I am excited by what this group can produce in the coming years.” Blade becomes the latest international to have re-signed for the Scarlets, following Wyn Jones, Aaron Shingler and Ryan Elias. Highly-rated youngsters Carwyn Tuipulotu and Morgan Jones have also agreed to new deals, along with prop Javan Sebastian. Further renewals will be announced in the coming weeks.

Shape into burgers and chill for 15 minutes. 4. These can be cooked on the solid plate of a BBQ, oven or grill – approximately 15-20 minutes depending on thickness. Top with cheese during last minute of cooking. Ensure thoroughly cooked in the centre.

Scarlets 28 Ospreys 15 (Magners League, Stradey Park, January 2, 2004)

FROM THE VAULT T

he Llanelli side proved too strong for the revitalised Ospreys at Stradey Park in a vibrant first West Wales derby between the sides. The game was on a knife edge at 18-15 with 10 minutes to go when a moment of magic from Matthew Watkins sent Barry Davies in for his second try. First-half tries from Davies and Watkins and a late effort from replacement Scott Quinnell ensured a bonus point for the home side. All the Ospreys points came from the boot of Shaun Connor. Kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes to give a huge crowd of 10,195 time to pack into Stradey Park and build a bubbling big-game atmosphere. The players caught the mood and after a sustained Ospreys attack a Connor penalty opened the scoring for the visitors. The furious, end-to-end exchanges continued, and with the Scarlets testing both flanks of the Neath-Swansea team a kind bounce fell to Davies who crossed for the home side’s opening score. Three Connor penalties allowed the Ospreys to edge back ahead with half-time approaching, but the home side gained heart when Andy Williams was sin-binned for killing attacking Scarlets ball underneath his own posts. The Llanelli side opted for a scrum but blew their chance with a knock on, then when Connor missed touch with his clearance kick Davies went for a drop goal. His effort was sliced badly wide, but another fortunate bounce fell to man-of-the-match Watkins who had a clear run in for the second try.

The visitors’ 14 men held out under Scarlet pressure early in the second half, and when a Shane Williams break relieved the onslaught home flanker Simon Easterby was sin binned for killing the ball on the floor. Connor slotted his fifth penalty to bring the scores level, but the advantage was back with the Scarlets after a 64th-minute Bowen goal. With the game poised on a knife edge, a moment of magic from Watkins effectively settled the outcome. He made a superb midfield break, drew the cover, then threw a wide pass to Davies who hit the line at speed to sprint in for his second try. With the Ospreys’ spirits starting to sag, Quinnell began to make some major inroads and was rewarded with the bonus-point try after spinning off a dynamic rolling maul. Williams tried his best to break down the stubborn Scarlet defence with some fantastic one-on-one skills, but there was to be no denying the professional home outfit as the Ospreys slipped to their seventh successive defeat. “We had no ball in the first half, but defended well,” said Scarlets captain Vernon Cooper. “We knew that if we could get more possession in the second half the result would come, and that’s how it worked out.”

Women’s RUGBY ROUND UP

WOMEN’S SIX NATIONS H

is side may have finished the Six Nations without a win to their name, but Wales Women’s head coach Warren Abrahams is confident the foundations are there to build on ahead of next year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

But it was a great competitive fixture as we expected it to be.” Abrahams and his staff now have time to dissect the Women’s Six Nations campaign before looking ahead at next year’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Following heavy defeats at the hands of France and Ireland, Wales produced a much-improved display in a 27-20 defeat to Scotland at Scotstoun. Captained by Scarlets Ladies centre Hannah Jones, Wales fought throughout and were rewarded with tries by wings Lisa Neumann and Caitlin Lewis, another Scarlets product. “I’m really proud of them, we asked for a performance and that was the key thing today,” said Abrahams. “We saw some really good stuff and some real fight. That finish at the end showed that considering where we were in the game and I’m really pleased with the way we showed how we want to play.

“It was a tough start to the Six Nations, but the biggest thing for me and the coaching team is that we’ve learned some incredible lessons,” he added. “We’ve got some confirmation of where we are as a group and what we need to do. If we want to compete at this level we just have to iron out the details behind the scene. We can take a lot of positives from this performance to continue to build.

“We went through 19 phases at the end there so there are some really great things we can take away from this game. If we want to compete at this level, we have to sort the set-piece out and we’ve learned some tough lessons there.

“If we want to play the way we want to play then we have to solve our set-piece problems. We’ll tidy them up. Our strength lies in the unstructured part of the game, but if you can’t get the setpiece go forward then you won’t have the freedom to play the game.”

APRIL PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Dane claims April player of the month award

Scrum-half Dane Blacker has been voted your Oil 4 Wales Supporters Player of the Month for April. It was a disappointing few weeks for the Scarlets with a heavy Heineken Champions Cup defeat to Sale Sharks followed by a loss in the opening round of the Rainbow Cup to the Dragons at Rodney Parade. But Blacker stood out, particularly in Newport, where he scored an outstanding solo try - his seventh of the campaign - and looked lively throughout. The No. 9 polled more than 70% of the online votes to take the award comfortably from hooker Ryan Elias and second row Jake Ball. He follows Sione Kalamfoni (January), Jac Morgan (February) and Steff Hughes (March) as the monthly winners so far in 2021.

SCARLETS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

With restrictions now easing in Wales, the Scarlets Community Foundation are looking forward to welcoming back new and familiar faces across the region as rugby players, young and old are lacing up their boots again. At the start of the pandemic all community activities were paused with restrictions in place for the majority of 2020, but following the green light from the Welsh Government the Scarlets Community have been able to plan for rugby’s gradual return. After a difficult year for families across the country, the WRU’s Return to Rugby announcement has been warmly welcomed with the prospect of training restarting once again and it has been great to see so many of our junior sides already back out there on the field. Up until the start of May sessions have been focused on fitness and skills development, while since the start of this month players at all levels of community rugby have been able to re-introduce a level of contact training. U18s are currently able to play tag and touch matches against other clubs.

Scarlets Community Foundation officer Rhodri Jones said: “In line with the recent relaxation of Covid restrictions, the Scarlets Community Foundation are pleased that we are now able to offer a range of different sporting opportunities to schools, clubs and the wider Scarlets community”. There are plenty of exciting new opportunities in the pipeline such as the Scarlets Panathlon partnership within SEN schools, skill development and CAIS programs in primary schools, club visits and rugby camps giving a range of opportunities to boys and girls to get involved.

TODAY’S VIRTUAL MASCOT NAME: Morgan Williams AGE: 12 years old School: Ysgol Caer Elen Club: Haverfordwest u12s Favourite player: Rob Evans because he inspires me and my teammates as he played for the same club as us. Scarlets isn’t a team, it’s a family.

THOUGHTS FROM THE HALFWAY H

ave you ever thought that rugby union is getting more like rugby league. Certainly, since the advent of the professional game in union players have swapped between both codes quite freely like Andy Farrell or the legendary Scarlet Scott Quinnell. Today’s game is being played under new experimental rules including a drop out from under the defending team’s posts if the ball has been minored or held up,over the line. It’s argued that it will speed up the game. It is also a copy of what is already happening in rugby league. The times when league was a forbidden word in South Wales. Many Scarlets went north to seek their fortune.Usually, they were not welcomed back and forbidden from playing union ever again. Some Scarlets became legends in the land of rugby league. None more so than Lewis Jones who celebrated his 90th birthday last month. He was one of those players that Scarlet supporters would turn up to see his own unique exciting brand of rugby. An attacking centre, he came from lineage of charismatic backs stretching back to Owen Badger and Albert Jenkins. From Gorseinon he joined the Navy as part of National Service on leave he played for the Scarlets over Christmas 1949. We lost to Maesteg who were enjoying a golden era after the War, but he stood out in a poor Scarlets performance. The Llanelli Star reporter was impressed. “If Lewis Jones had not been playing, most of the crowd would have gone home at half-time. He is the sort of centre that the Scarlets have been looking for.” The reporter wasn’t the only spectator who was impressed. The Welsh selectors immediately picked Lewis for the game against England as

a full-back. He didn’t disappoint, playing an important part in the victory at Twickenham with a trademark spectacular run and kicking two goals. He played in all the Welsh internationals that season, two as a full-back and two as a centre, as Wales won their first Triple Crown for 39 years. He then went on to star for the British & Irish Lions who toured Australia and New Zealand that summer. In only his first season of rugby, he had been called up as a replacement when the Irish full-back broke his arm. Jones then spent two unforgettable years with the Scarlets making spectacular runs and pinpoint kicking. One try against Cardiff was described as “one of the most amazing ever seen at Stradey.” But it wasn’t just the Scarlets fans who were purring at the feats of the Gorseinon Golden Boy. The scouts with the chequebooks were even more impressed. The Scarlets and all Welsh clubs had lost dozens of players to rugby league since the second world war. In November 1952 Leeds signed him for £6,000, a record fee and equivalent to more than £400,000 now. He became a rugby league great, scoring nearly 3,000 points in 305 games for Leeds and starring for the Great Britain side. The Scarlets supporters remembered him with fondness. In three short seasons he had won their admiration. A local reporter summed up their feelings, “while at the Scarlets, Lewis Jones gave unforgettable pleasure to those that recognise greatness.” Seventy years later, the old animosity between league and union has gone. Today Lewis Jones would have been welcomed back to play for the Scarlets after his career in league. Who knows, if today’s experimental rule of a drop out under the posts works there might not be a difference between both codes anyway.
