CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

A

warm hello once again to the Scarlets family. You will have seen this week that the Welsh Government has announced a significant financial package for sporting organisations that will go a long way to help us survive the ongoing absence of supporters from our stadium. Without doubt, it is good news for the Scarlets and Welsh rugby as a whole and something that will give the board, players, staff and fans some real assurance as we move forward through this pandemic. Unfortunately, I can’t provide any update on when our supporters will be allowed to return to Parc y Scarlets, but at least we are seeing some progress in the fight against the virus and if infection rates continue to go in the right direction, combined with the vaccination roll-out, it would be great to have some form of crowds back here before the end of the season. We will continue to work closely with the Welsh Government to make this happen when it is safe to do so.

Those Crys16 members who attended the ‘Meet the Management’ evening this week will have heard from our chief operating officer Phil Morgan and general manager of rugby Jon Daniels about the challenges we have had to overcome over the last 12 months or so. Keeping our supporter base engaged and informed is crucial to us and we will continue to try and communicate with you as much as we can. Following a delay due to the emergence of Covid-19, we are looking to officially launch our Scarlets Community Foundation — the charity arm of the Scarlets — in early March so keep an eye out for some great initiatives and events from them, including a bike ride around the region in August. Finally, good luck to our Welsh contingent involved in the Six Nations opener against Ireland next weekend and also to Blade who links up with Scotland. Enjoy the game this evening. Stay safe Simon

COACH’S MESSAGE I

t’s been a while since Leinster were last with us in Llanelli and players, coaches and staff are excited about the prospect of having a crack at the champions this evening. Leinster have long set the gold standard in our competition. They have a huge amount of international talent and also run a great programme where they possess the depth to have players slotting in seamlessly when they do lose those Test players. That is something I also feel we are building here and as I have said many times on this page, it has been fantastic to see so many of our young players coming through and taking their opportunities this season. This evening Sam Costelow is handed his first start in the PRO14, Morgan Jones comes into the second row, while Kemsley Mathias and Carwyn Tuipulotu are named on the bench. For Carwyn it is his first chance in our match-day 23 and congratulations to him and all his family. It is a big night for the young man and reward for the hard work he has put in and his appetite to always look to better himself. That philosophy of aiming to be better every day is what we’re about here and we all came back in on Monday and were pretty honest and straight with ourselves following the defeat to Cardiff Blues. With 11 players heading to the Vale to prepare for the Six Nations with the Wales squad, there are a lot of changes to the side and there has been a great energy and buzz around the place this week. As I said earlier, the boys are looking forward to this opportunity.

I do understand the fans’ frustration at the moment — not quite executing when we have created opportunities is not where we want to be. In the games against Connacht, Ulster and Bath before Christmas we felt we were playing the kind of rugby we want to play and the fans want to see and this week has given us a chance to freshen things up with the group that were largely involved for those matches. If we weren’t creating the chances I would be far more despondent, but we know we need to improve the execution and finishing. It is certainly not for the want of trying and we have a great group of players here who are desperate to perform every time they pull on the Scarlets jersey. Obviously, we would love for you to be with us because as players and coaches we feed off the passion of the crowd here at Parc y Scarlets. Please stay safe and stay connected with us. Diolch Glenn

PLAYER PROFILE

Leading from the Front A

t the ripe old age of 26, Steff Hughes is some way off from being labelled a seasoned veteran.

But there was a wry smile on the face of the Scarlets centre this week when he was asked by the media about his role as a mentor to the exciting batch of young players coming through the system at Parc y Scarlets. It wasn’t long ago that Hughes was helping coach one of the Scarlets age-grade teams, a squad made up of fresh-faced teenagers desperate to make the coveted step to the professional game. Fast forward a few years and Steff finds himself playing alongside some of those boys he used to coach. “It is a bit strange, I think there are about six or seven of them in the senior squad now,” said the man who returns to lead the side for this evening’s Guinness PRO14 clash against defending champions Leinster. “It has been brilliant to see the young boys grasp their opportunity this season; the likes of Jac Morgan, Morgan Jones, Jac Price, Sam Costelow have been outstanding in the group. “The year we won the league, the side that was here during the international window was crucial in putting us in the position to kick on and I think the experience the younger boys had in the

autumn will really stand us in good stead for the next block of matches.” For those matches Hughes accepts that the backto-back defeats to Cardiff Blues have suddenly brought a lot more jeopardy to Champions Cup qualification in what is a truncated PRO14 campaign. “Nobody was happy with how we played last weekend, it was a tough review on Monday, but we move on, learn the lessons and the boys are excited about taking on Leinster,” he adds. “We know they are a very, very good team, we have spoken about that. We are going to have to execute far better, our discipline has to improve and we need to be braver with the ball; it is also an opportunity for us to show people what we can do as a group. You want to play against the best teams to see where you are.” With so many young players involved this evening, Hughes’s experience and calming midfield influence will be crucial. He is now in his eighth season with his home-town side and closing in on a century of appearances — a milestone that would have already been reached had it not been for a career-threatening knee injury.

Thankfully, that is long behind the former Wales U20s captain, a player who Scarlets head coach Glenn Delaney readily acknowledges to be a key component in the squad, both on and off the field. “He has been an absolute champion right the way through my time here,” said the New Zealander. “In fact, we have a support group around him off the field because his natural instinct is to take it all on. “We are really lucky we have him and Ken (Owens) at the top of our leadership tree and they are very well supported by the group of guys around them.” So long operating in the shadows of Jonathan Davies, Hadleigh Parkes and Scott Williams, the last two seasons

have seen Hughes come to the fore in this Scarlets set-up. As well as his organisational skills and defensive nous, his kicking game has been a potent weapon — highlighted by the inch-perfect cross-field kick for Ryan Conbeer’s try in Belfast and the clever chip over the top that broke down the Blues’ defensive system for Blade Thomson so score last weekend. “He is effectively playing in oldfashioned terms like a second five-eighth, like having two 10s on the field,” added Delaney. “You saw that with Steff’s kick for Blade’s try, he sees space and has the skills to execute. As for the kick for Ryan Conbeer’s try against Ulster, it could not have been anywhere else.

“Defensively he has also been outstanding. We have changed the defensive system here and Steff understands it beautifully and always makes the right reads. He is a great player and a great Scarlet and I would love him to be here for the rest of his career. “He embodies what we are about as a club, we play for our village, our town, our region, that is our tribe and he represents that.”

“We are really lucky we have him and Ken (Owens) at the top of our leadership tree and they are very well supported by the group of guys around them.”

After consulting with key PRO14 stakeholders, the Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup was chosen as the best pathway to finish up the current campaign and introduce South Africa’s four ‘Super’ teams: the Vodacom Bulls; Emirates Lions; Cell C Sharks and DHL Stormers. This decision also allows our European-based sides to earn qualification for European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) tournaments in 2021/22 in a fair and equitable manner. Ahead of the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa, the Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup will provide a groundbreaking spectacle for fans who will see international star players from north and south establish new rivalries in their bid for the ultimate Test selection. Cardiff Blues secure double on disappointing night at Parc y Scarlets

C

ardiff Blues completed the double over the Scarlets in a tight Guinness PRO14 contest at Parc y Scarlets. The home side threatened a second-half comeback when Scotland international Blade Thomson crossed with 12 minutes remaining. But for the second successive game, Blues finished the match the stronger to secure the spoils. The Scarlets will rue not turning pressure into points after enjoying the better of territory and possession stakes. But they found a resolute Blues defensive wall tough to break down. The Scarlets brought back Wales internationals Wyn Jones, Jake Ball, Ryan Elias and Johnny McNicholl into their starting line-up, while there was the welcome sight of Ken Owens back in the match-day 23; the hooker having recovered from shoulder surgery. The home side started the match with plenty of endeavour and were on the front foot early. No. 8 Sione Kalamafoni went close from a short-range line-out catch and drive, but the Scarlets couldn’t secure another line-out and the Blues were able to clear their lines. In contrast, the visitors capitalised on their first period of pressure inside the Scarlets 22. Fly-half Jarrod Evans - the tormentor in chief two weeks ago - produced a lovely off-load to send full-back Matthew Morgan through the gap for a try that Evans himself converted. As the Scarlets looked for a response, a deft kick through from Dan Jones found Johnny McNicholl, but his pass couldn’t find Steff Evans

on his outside and the chance was gone. More Blues pressure led to three points from the boot of Evans to extend the visitors’ lead to 10-0 and that was how it stayed until the break. The Scarlets started the second-half in determined fashion, again enjoying the bulk of the play with ball in hand. But for all their chances close to the line, they had to be content with a penalty from the boot of Leigh Halfpenny. Club captain Owens entered the fray on 48 minutes, but the Scarlets then lost Wyn Jones and Kalamafoni to injury - Sione taking a blow to the head attempting to tackle the Blues’ Moldovan prop Dmitri Arhip. Scarlets thought they had scored when Angus O’Brien pounced on a cross-field kick on 61 minutes, but the try was ruled out following consultation with the television match official, who adjudged there had been an illegal push in the build-up. The Scarlets finally opened their try account when replacement Steff Hughes put in a lovely chip over the corner into the path of Thomson and when Halfpenny converted from the touchline only three points were in the game. But that was the Scarlets’ last chance. Kieran Hardy was yellow carded in the closing moments and Blues saw out the match close to the Scarlets line. The result sees the Blues leapfrog the Scarlets in the Conference B standings, having played a match more.

FROM THE PRESS ROOM

Glenn Delaney previews LEINSTER Glenn Delaney spoke to the media ahead of Saturday’s rescheduled Guinness PRO14 clash with defending champions Leinster. Here are the highlights from his press conference: Glenn, what is the latest injury update from the squad? GD: “Obviously, Sione took a big knock; look it was reviewed many times and there have been a number of different opinions about it. The only thing I am concerned about is that Sione got knocked out and we are looking after him. The big fella is on concussion protocol and will go through that, but has been up and around and smiling and his normal self which is a good sign. “Morgan Jones is back fit and Dan Davis is back in the mix which is helpful after four opensides being out last weekend with injury. Tyler Morgan is also back fit which is great. Lewis Rawlins is probably; a month and a half away-ish from being back after his neck surgery. He is a guy we would love to have back as soon as possible. “The other boys we spoke about last week are still going through their concussion protocols.” What has the response been in training this week? GD: “The response has been everything we expected it would be. It has been an objective review, what you also have to look at is that the group has changed a bit so what we have done is take the things we could have done better and worked on those. We have had a couple of good days. “What was frustrating was that we created seven chances to score and didn’t take one of them, When you look at the space we create on the edge, they (Blues) are a tight defensive line, all it took was one bit of communication and one pass and we would have been pretty much running down 30-metre edges with three-on-ones and four-on-twos. That is everything we are trying to create in attack. We have to look at the reasoning why we weren’t getting the ball to that part of the field. “We also had some pretty clear chances to drive from five metres out when our drive had been pretty good. To not execute in those big moments is very frustrating because all the lead up to it had been done. I said after the game I thought tee to green

was pretty good, but our putting was atrocious. I would be far more despondent if we weren’t creating.” Is your form a concern going into a game against the champions? GD: “You look at games against Connacht, Ulster and then into Bath, we were in a purple patch and playing the rugby we wanted to. The derbies have been a little disjointed. This gives us a chance to refresh, reset and get back to where we were. “Leinster defend differently to Cardiff; we have got a plan to create and there will be opportunity for guys who haven’t been playing these last few weeks. That is bringing new energy and excitement to the group. Our job is to make sure they are free and are able to express themselves. “When you play Leinster you have to make sure you remain in the contest to give yourself a chance to execute. We know they are the form horse, they have been for a number of years and they have plenty of depth. It is an opportunity to have a crack at them and we are excited by it.” Are you feeling the pressure to deliver a performance? GD: “There is always pressure, every day you do the job. I understand the frustration, I get that, it goes with the territory. We all want to be playing the rugby that anyone who supports us wants to see and we will work hard towards delivering that. I do know if we had managed to execute one or two passes last weekend, that game would have looked very different. We will keep being objective, being straight and being honest and I welcome all the opinions. The hardest thing we are dealing with is not having people in the stadium. I keep coming back to it, but the fact is we are a club built with a wonderful emotional footprint and its passion and that is what we want back in the stadium. The disconnect between us and the fans at the moment, we are really feeling it and they are feeling it. Our boys feed off the crowd and that is what I love about this place and as coaches we feed off it too.”

LEINSTER RUGBY

TODAY’S OPPOSITION S

tunned at the RDS by an inspired Connacht over the festive season, normal service has resumed for the champions in recent weeks.

Leo Cullen’s side saw off the challenge of in-form Conference A rivals Ulster in Dublin in round 11 before edging a typically physical clash with Munster in Limerick last Saturday. Leinster trailed 10-0 at one stage, but the boot of Johnny Sexton coupled with a superbly-crafted try for Jordan Larmour sealed the points to install the Dubliners as favourites to secure a place in a fourth successive PRO14 final. “We did make hard work of it,” reflected Cullen (pictured) on the 13-10 victory at Thomond Park. “It took us a while to settle into the game. We had a slow start. We didn’t deal well with some of the aerial challenges and gave Munster a lot of access and territory. “We only kicked into gear when we were 10 points down. I thought the players held their nerve well and

the bench came on and added some good energy as well. We are pleased to get the win but it was far from a perfect performance, we need to be a lot better.” This rearranged clash was due to be played in November but became one of a number of Covidenforced postponements. It will be Leinster’s first visit to Llanelli since September 2018 when the Scarlets edged a thriller, winning 23-21. Like the Scarlets, the visitors will be without a number of their international stars, with 17 Leinster players named in Andy Farrell’s Ireland Six Nations squad this week.

RE-SIGNING

Javan Sebastian signs new Scarlets deal Prop Javan Sebastian has become the latest home-grown player to re-sign with the Scarlets.

T

he 26-year-old tight-head has featured in every Guinness PRO14 match this season and also came off the bench to make his mark in the Heineken Champions Cup victory over Bath in December.

Sebastian made his Scarlets bow in an LV=Cup match against Cardiff Blues seven years ago. He had to wait until 2019 to make his PRO14 debut against Toyota Cheetahs and hasn’t looked back since.

Having come through the Scarlets Academy system, Sebastian was capped by Wales at U18s level and has played for Carmarthen Quins in the Welsh Premiership.

“I am enjoying the run of rugby I have been having so I am delighted to have signed a new deal,” he said. “It is a great environment to be part of, you are always being pushed to get better every day and that is what I have been trying to do.

Following a brief stint with Glasgow Warriors, he is now in his second spell with the Scarlets and his perseverance and hard work around the group has seen him rewarded with a fresh deal for 2021-22 and beyond. “Javan has worked really hard on his game and the fact that he has played in all of our matches this season emphasises the effort he has put in. He is an example to young players of what can be achieved when you are willing to put the work in,” said head coach Glenn Delaney. “We are fortunate to have a scrum coach in Ben Franks who has been around a few performance environments and understands what it takes to prepare and prepare well. Having someone to pass those lessons on to Javan has been invaluable. Then what do you do with that information? Do you grasp the nettle and look to make the best of yourself? That is what you have seen from Javan this season.”

“There is great competition across the front row. Samson (Lee) and Werner (Kruger) are experienced Test props and working closely with someone of the international experience of Ben Franks has also been a big help for my game. I’m only 26 and feel there is a lot more to come from me and I’m looking forward to continuing my development in the coming years.” Sebastian’s re-signing follows that of fellow front-rower, Wales international loose-head Wyn Jones, last week. PIC OF THE WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY: Huw Evans Picture Agency

Give one of Leigh’s favourite festive dishes a go! Roast leg of Welsh Lamb with gin and cranberry Ingredients 1 PGI Welsh Lamb leg joint, allow 175-350g per person 450g PGI Welsh Lamb or PGI Welsh Beef sausages, slit skins and remove meat 6 tbsp gin 3 tbsp cranberry sauce 4 small red onions 1 tsp butter 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 160°C fan / Gas 4-5. Weigh the joint and calculate the cooking time: medium – 25 minutes per 450g / 500g plus 25 minutes or well done – 30 minutes per 450g / 500g plus 30 minutes. 2. Line a roasting pan with two sheets of foil and place the lamb leg onto the foil. Mix together the gin and cranberry sauce and spoon this over the lamb. 3. Scrunch the foil around the joint, but leave the top exposed. Place the joint in the preheated oven to roast and baste occasionally during cooking. 4. Add the onions 45 minutes before the end of the final cooking time for the lamb.

5. Meanwhile, cut the onions in half horizontally (stalk at top) and using a spoon scoop out some of the layers leaving 2-3 in the shell. 6. Roughly chop the removed onion. In a pan heat butter and lightly fry the onion. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Add the rosemary and sausage meat and combine together. 7. Take a handful of mixture and stuff into onion shells. Prop up around the joint, drizzle with a little olive oil and cook for 40-50 minutes until onion soft and fully golden. Rest the joint for about 15 minutes. 8.Serve with roasted potatoes, baked onions, seasonal vegetables and cranberry gin meat juices.

Scarlets 45 Leinster 20 (RaboDirect PRO12, SEPTEMBER 1 2012, Parc y scarlets)

FROM THE VAULT T

he Scarlets kicked off their Pro12 campaign with a comfortable bonus-point win over last season’s runners up Leinster at Parc y Scarlets. The hosts were 14-6 ahead at the break with Scott Williams and Liam Williams going over. Wings George North and Andy Fenby led the way in the second period. Devin Toner went over for Leinster before Kieran Murphy, North and Fenby underlined the Scarlets’ superiority ahead of Ian Madigan’s late try.Victory gave new head coach Simon Easterby a winning start at competitive level following his appointment in June. The Welsh region had not beaten European champions Leinster in their last seven encounters in all competitions. But while experienced flanker Shane Jennings led Leinster, their match 22 included six players from the province’s Academy on the bench and they were without 11 internationals and another seven injured players. Scarlets’ had last beaten the Irish side in the opening game of the 2009-10 season. That set the contest up for the hosts to continue a recent trend that had seen them start league seasons with victory in three of the previous four terms. And a side including new locks George Earle and Richard Kelly was not to be denied. Centre Scott Williams went over in the 15th minute after good approach work by the home pack. Williams provided a fine cut-out pass for fullback namesake Liam to go over 10 minutes later.

Madigan kicked penalties at either end of the opening period, but when North went over for his side’s third try soon after the restart, having initially launched the move, Leinster’s hopes were fading. When Fenby profited from a move begun by Liam Williams and continued by powerful backrower Aaron Shingler, the outcome was certain. Toner crossed to offer his side a brief respite but the onslaught continued with Murphy’s response. North was next to cross, powering away on the right after replacement scrum-half Gareth Davies’s burst. Fenby was one of several potential try-scorers after centre Gareth Maule broke free on the left. There was time for Madigan to add a consolation try to his two penalties and conversion of Toner’s try. But Scarlets kickers Aled Thomas and Rhys Priestland landed five conversions between them on a night that belonged to the hosts.

SIX NATIONS 2021

SCARLETS WITH WALES

Wales coach Wayne Pivac has issued a positive injury update on Scarlets duo Wyn Jones and Josh Macleod ahead of next week’s Guinness Six Nations opener against Ireland. Jones picked up a neck issue in the Scarlets’ PRO14 defeat to Cardiff Blues, while Macleod sat out the match because of an ankle niggle. Both have been in training at the Vale of Glamorgan this week in readiness for the Celtic clash at the Principality Stadium a week on Sunday. Scarlets skipper Ken Owens has also shown no ill effects following his return to action from shoulder surgery. Scarlets provide 11 of Pivac’s 36-man squad for the Championship. Asked about what areas he was looking to improve following a mixed Autumn Cup campaign, the former Scarlets head coach said: “During that campaign there was a lot talked about defensively and we made a change there. But after that change, there were other areas of our game that didn’t function as well as we’d have liked. “Clearly the set piece affected us in the Ireland and Scotland game. We did get better as the tournament went on but that is something that is a concern for us. We’re doing a lot of work on that to make sure we have a platform to operate from.

“We talk about the attack and how we want to do things there but no matter what you do in attack, if you don’t have the platform to launch from then it makes things very difficult. “We got ourselves into some good positions in those games but we weren’t able to capitalise because of a malfunctioning set piece. “That’s clearly a big drive for us, to improve in that area, as well as across the board to be honest.”

OWAIN BADGER

THOUGHTS FROM THE HALFWAY “Good sides never die, they only fade away.” It seems odd to adapt a quote from General MacArthur, a legendary American soldier of the Second World War in the context of the Scarlets. The 1951 quote was from a soldier fading away as he retired from active duty. The good sides quote could well sum up the present position of the Scarlets. Of course, a run of disappointing results has happened before and with the quality in the side we will bounce back. You look at the squad and there are key players who are now in their thirties, but also an exciting batch of youngsters coming through. It is ten years since the great Clive Rowlands was praising the play and speed of a young Scarlets back-line that included Jonathan Davies, George North and Rhys Priestland. The future of Wales he claimed. Indeed, they were. When you add in players like Ken Owens and Aaron Shingler in the pack he was right. A few have gone to other clubs but many of that side have served the Scarlets well. The side peaked when winning the then PRO12 a few seasons ago and there has been plenty of change since. The Scarlets have gone through many transformational times before. Owen Badger was the legendary captain during the club’s first Golden Era in the 1890s particularly in the 1896-1897 season when they lost only one game. But that side was torn apart when Badger and many other players were lured north by professional rugby and others retired at the same time. There was a marked decline in the performance of the club prompting a local newspaper to comment that performances were so bad that the number of supporters had dwindled considerably, adding: “Where we boasted of being the strongest a few seasons ago, at three-quarter, is now our weakest department.”

The Scarlets inevitably bounced back as there was always new young talent coming through and within three seasons the same newspaper columnist was hailing the Scarlets as “brilliant, the best since the days of Badger.” Let’ s turn to another Golden Era, that of Albert Jenkins in the 1920s. After nearly ten successful years of playing attractive open rugby the great man and many others retired in 1929. They did indeed fade away. Again, this was followed by an unsuccessful season. The newspapers were quick to comment: “there is something radically wrong. The decline of Scarlets rugby is very marked.” Yet within two seasons they were the unofficial Welsh club champions with the legendary Ivor Jones as top point scorer. Ivor Jones, of course, is a relative of Gwyn Jones, the former Llanelli, Cardiff and Wales captain who was commentating for S4C during the last two defeats to Cardiff. He remarked at one stage that the Scarlets seemed to have lost their way. This present squad contains too much talent not to have further good performances in them. As with some of the great Scarlet teams of the past, age will eventually tell and they will inevitably fade away. But as we have seen in the past the Scarlets have this great ability to recover and new talent will inevitably come along. The cycle continues. MacArthur, by the way, is still recognised as a great general. Time does not wither but perhaps that’s enough of the quotes for now.

huge thanks to Scarlets fan Rory McInnesGibbons who has raised nearly £300 for the Scarlets Community Foundation by taking part in our ‘Scarlets Kicks’ campaign. The Foundation is the charity arm of the Scarlets and is raising funds to continue their work within our community. At the start of the pandemic the Foundation, with the help of our grassroots clubs, co-ordinated the delivery of food parcels to those in need. Over Christmas, they hit the road again to deliver Christmas hampers across the region. Anyone can take part in the kicks campaign, there is even a video on our social channels from Scarlets star Leigh Halfpenny to give you some tips. ALBERT TANNER CEFNogwr

Y GAIR OLAF D

oes dim amheuaeth bod talaith Leinster wedi cynhyrchu llwyth o wharaewyr neilltuol o dda dros y blynyddoedd – yn flaenwyr fel Sean Lynch, Fergus Slattery, Phil Orr a Jamie Heaslip, a chefnwyr fel Tony O’Reilly, Ollie Campbell, Brian O’Driscoll a Johnny Sexton. Pob un ohonyn nhw yn Llewod, wrth gwrs. Os oedd rhain yn “arwyr” o rhyw fath, wnes i erioed gwrdd ‘da unrhyw un ohonyn nhw. Yr un o feibion Leinster y cwrddes i ‘dag e sawl gwaith oedd un adnabyddus am fod yn wharaewr “gor-frwdfrydig”. Mewn geirie eraill, wharaewr brwnt a threisgar. Yn draddodiadol ma’ llawer o wharaewyr rhyngwladol Iwerddon wedi mynychu ysgolion gramadeg a’r rhai sy’n codi ffi am eu mynychu nhw. Un o gefndir tra gwahanol yw Trevor Brennan. Crwt o gefndir dosbarth gweithiol yn Leixslip a ddechreuodd ei yrfa gyda clwb rygbi Barnhall, Kildare cyn gweithio’i ffordd lan trwy’r lefelau tan iddo gyrraedd tîm Leinster. A dweud y gwir, fedra i ddim cofio’i weld e’n cynrychioli’r dalaith yn erbyn y Scarlets. Dês i ar ei draws e ar ôl iddo symud i Toulouse – fy hoff glwb (ar ôl y Scarlets, wrth gwrs). Ma’ gofyn eich bod chi’n wharaewr eitha’ da os gallwch chi ymddangos mewn tair ffeinal Ewropeaidd mewn tair blynedd – ac ennill dwy ohonyn nhw. Yn y cyfnod rhwng 2003 a 2005 roedd y mewnlifiad o wharaewyr tramor i glybie Ffrainc heb ddechrau o ddifri a roedd tîm Toulouse yn Ffrancod gan fwya’. Mewn gwirionedd, Trevor oedd yr unig tramorwr i ddechrau yn ffeinal 2003.

Ond, medde chi, shwt alli di edmygu rhywun a oedd yn fwy adnabyddus am dreulio mwy na’i shâr yn y cell cosb, ac a orffennodd ei yrfa gyda dirwy o £30,000 a gwaharddiad am oes? A dyw’r ffaith i’r gwaharddiad gael ei ostwng i bum mlynedd ddim yn gwneud pethe’n OK chwaith. Wel, wedi i wrthoch chi. Achos mod i wedi cwrdd â Trevor sawl gwaith yn y bar y mae’n berchen yn Ffrainc yn y cyfnod pan oedd y Scarlets fel petaen ni’n wynebu Toulouse yn yr Heineken bob tymor bron. Doedd dim ffrils yno; dim ond cwrw da, bwyd deche a chroeso twymgalon fel byddech chi’n dishgwl gan Wyddel. Bydde chi ddim am ddechre trwbwl yn y bar achos ar waetha’i groeso a’i hiwmor Trevor oedd y boi i roi stop ar unrhyw nonsens. A dweud y gwir, ar un achlysur nid yn unig dreulion ni oriau yn ei gwmni ond pwy gerddodd mewn ond Dr Who ei hunan (wel, Tom Baker beth bynnag). Ma’ unrhyw dafarn sy’n cynnig cawr o ddyn hynaws mor wahanol i’w ddelwedd ar y cae rygbi a time traveller mewn un prynhawn yn werth ymweld ag e. Erbyn hyn, ma dau o feibion y teulu Brennan yn ddigon da i gynrychioli Ffrainc dan 18 yn achos Joshua a dan 20 yn achos Daniel. Mae’r llinach yn parhau. Gallai Trevor fod yn ddihiryn ar y cae rygbi ond fel dywedodd Guy Noves amdano “Fe wnes i ail-ddarganfod yn whare Trevor y math o ysbryd amatur sy’n rhoi popeth dros y crys, ei gyd-wharaewyr a’i glwb”. Pa well teyrnged sydd ei angen ar wharaewr rygbi?
