Teamwork – an introduction from Gary This month’s Fresh News focuses on teamwork, one of our five ways of working. Teamwork is something that’s really important to me – working together we will achieve more. reat teamwork is about all of us, all with our own strengths, working towards the same goal. We all need to understand what our job is, and how it fits with the jobs that our colleagues do. And it’s about great people, working together to be better shopkeepers. That’s how we’ll succeed in giving our customers the best possible experience – making Morrisons a great place to work and shop.

Getting engaged! It’s important that we work together in everything we do. This year’s survey shows that no matter where you work, you’re feeling more involved and we’re working better together. “We use the survey to measure how you feel about working at Morrisons,” says Paige Cahill, People Specialist – Engagement. “So it was really good to see engagement levels up across every area of the business, and more of you say that you’re proud to work here.”

Making it count As well as 37 closed questions, there were three ‘free text’ questions that let you share your thoughts

and ideas in more detail – and nearly 70,000 of you did. “It was a lot of reading!” says Paige. “But we read every single comment because they’re all important to us. We got a big group of colleagues from across stores, sites and Hilmore to help, to make sure we covered everything. It was a great example of teamwork.”

How we’re responding

From your feedback, four things were clear. You told us:

1

We’re listening hard to our customers and putting them first.

2

We’re getting better at working as a team.

3

We need to create more opportunities for you to have your say.

We’re launching the Your Say Forum, which will be driven by 4 colleagues. It’s a place where we’ll bring We’re teamwork to listening hard life by listening and responding and responding to ideas that quickly wherever will make possible Morrisons a great place to work and shop. The first meeting will be held in July.

High standards We’re striving for great shop standards – and this training will make it happen by encouraging us to look at our stores with a fresh pair of eyes every day, for the benefit of our customers. Our plan to make us successful Jennifer Guy, People Manager, says: “At the heart of the programme is understanding the Store Manager role and the key role we all have to play in delivering our five ways of working.” There will also be some practical activities, such as Store Managers going into the kitchen to see and understand what it means to be a food maker.

Teamwork

Training with a difference Store Managers will also get to know their Regional Managers better – because they’ll be delivering parts of the programme! “We already have lots of knowledge within the business,” says Jennifer. “We have experts who are committed

to sharing what they know so we want to involve them in the training. “That way, our Store Managers are learning from people who truly understand Morrisons, and know what we’re aiming to achieve.”

This is a great way for us to focus on our time in store, and feel motivated about what we can achieve together. It’s about learning, developing and passing that knowledge on.” Gary Mills, Group Retail Director

We’re very excited about it. Store Managers will strengthen their skills to run our stores even more effectively, and that will help us to Serve Customers Better.” Tina Emerton, Head of Support Office Service Operations

n the 27th floor of one of the many skyscrapers that stand to attention along the Hong Kong skyline is a little bit of Morrisons. It’s the home of the Morrisons Global Sourcing Team. Established in 2011, the team of 34 provides a vital link between our customers, buyers and suppliers. Hong Kong is a hub for sourcing products from China, India and other parts of the world as Christine Lo, Sourcing Manager says: “We’re the eyes and ears of the company in the rest of the world. We work closely with the commercial, ethical and quality teams in Bradford, to research trends and find out what customers want. Using our local knowledge we find the right suppliers who deliver fantastic products at competitive prices.”

Keeping standards high… …for our customers

…For our colleagues

Our Hong Kong-based technical team regularly visits supplier factories to advise on manufacturing processes, check quality and standards, and research new products our customers will buy back in the UK. Having these technical experts in the team means that our customers can be confident they’re buying good quality, great value products from us.

Being on the doorstep, the team can make sure suppliers are working to the same technical and ethical codes that we and our customers expect. Twice a year they visit the top 20% of our suppliers, who account for 60% of our business, so that they’re checking workers are treated fairly, the manufacturing process is safe and we’re all putting customers first.

David meets the team David joined Group Commercial Director Darren Blackhurst on a recent visit to Hong Kong. David met the team, visited factories and took part in the first international Supplier Conference, attended by more than 150 people. “Our suppliers are part of our team. This conference helped them to understand our priorities and ways of working,” says Wanita Li, Sourcing Manager.

Working together Our Nutmeg and Global Sourcing teams worked together on the new colleague uniform. Global Sourcing used their Indian and Sri Lankan textile suppliers to get the best prices, while Nutmeg’s technical experts made sure that the cut, colour and fabric quality were just right.

When it comes to getting goods into the UK, Global Sourcing works with our Import team at Hilmore. In a great example of teamwork, the departments are combining orders from different suppliers across China. This fills more space in each container before it’s shipped, saving money and helping us to keep costs lower for customers. Another cost-saving project is also helping Logistics and store colleagues save time. Our Import team, Global Sourcing and suppliers are working on ‘store-ready units’. This means the goods are picked and packed in Asia ready to be placed directly onto our shelves in store.

Sarah’s mother-in-law fell seriously ill and was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. “Because of the partnership, I knew about the nearby Sue Ryder Hospice. They cared for us as a family too when we were all so terrified.” After lots of specialist care, and with help from Sue Ryder, Sarah’s mother-in-law moved in with Sarah, so that she can spend the end of her life surrounded by her family. “She came home in November and in June she’s still with us.
