The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism and Major Events

WELCOME TO THE SECOND HORIZON FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND CULTURE HERE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST Last year almost 35,000 people enjoyed our inaugural festival and with more than 200 events on the program this year I’m sure we’ll welcome even more.

For those of you visiting the Coast, I encourage you to take the time to see everything we have on offer from our beautiful hinterland to our pristine beaches.

Through Horizon, we are celebrating our artistic community who will share their talents with the audience, alongside a number of well-known national and international guests.

Thank you to our festival partners for your support and for sharing our love of arts and culture. Finally, to all of our producers, artists,

performers and volunteers - without you, this festival would not be possible so I thank you for being a part of what will be an outstanding celebration of arts and culture across the region.

Mark Jamieson Mayor

Explore our program of events that are just waiting to be experienced with family, friends and visitors.

FROM THE HORIZON TEAM Hundreds of dedicated artists, producers, organisers, event managers, committees, curators, workers and volunteers have come together to bring you Horizon - a true reflection of arts and culture in the region. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and collaborated. To complement the program's local flavour, we're excited to welcome a number of national and international guests who will be broadening our horizons and collaborating with local artists.

William Close and the Earth Harp Collective will perform for the first time in Australia at Horizon on opening night - this is one spectacle not to be missed. INTERNATIONAL INSTALLATION ARTIST, MUSICIAN AND VISIONARY, WILLIAM CLOSE, BRINGS HIS FAMED EARTH HARP TO AUSTRALIA FOR THE FIRST TIME TO IGNITE HORIZON. For one night only, the Los Angeles based artist will deliver two concert spectacles collaborating with local Sunshine Coast musicians and performers. Close creates musical installations that use the architecture as part of the instrument. During the concert, the body of the Earth Harp will rest on the stage and 24 harp strings will travel across the length of Kings Beach Amphitheatre, over the audience, transforming the venue into a colossal musical instrument. The audience will be pulled into the performance and will experience the music from the inside. The Earth Harp has been installed in some of the most iconic destinations in the world including The Colosseum in Rome, the temples of Vietnam, Grand Theatre of Shanghai and major US festivals such as Coachella and Burning Man. A permanent Earth Harp installation is also currently a part of Cirque du Soleil’s show “Ka” in Las Vegas. This Australian premiere and opening night spectacle should not be missed.

The immersive and interactive sculptures of Architects of Air, designed by Alan Parkinson, have delighted audiences across the globe for 25 years. Architects of Air have toured the luminaria since 1992 in 43 countries welcoming over 3 million visitors at more than 600 exhibitions across 5 continents. Each luminarium is a monument to the beauty of light and colour, offering a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes inspired by Islamic and Gothic architecture. It’s an experience which awakens all the senses, creating a sense of wonder and enchantment for all ages as visitors are immersed in a unique sensory experience. In Arboria, visitors start by removing their shoes and entering an airlock. Once inside they can explore freely, follow their map through the maze or just lay back and enjoy the unique experience. Upon entering, a visitor’s first reaction is often one of delight at the unexpected beauty of the light.
