Horizon Festival is the signature multi-arts festival for the Sunshine Coast region, bringing together local, national and international artists for 10 arts-fuelled days. The Queensland Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program, as part of the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar, which is worth $800 million to the state’s economy. I’d like to congratulate the event organisers and thank the many volunteers involved in the success of this event. To those visiting the region, I encourage you to make the most of your stay, get out and explore the Sunshine Coast and surrounding regions, from pristine beaches to breathtaking hinterland rainforests.

A Galaxy of Suns is a spectacular 32-part choir performance that ‘sings’ the stars as they rise and set over 360˚ of the horizon. Tracking the Earth’s motions through space, the work documents in real-time the audience’s precise position in relation to the stars, sonifying stellar data in a unique celebration of the majesty and beauty of the cosmos, and the ultimately inaccessible and intangible nature of the stars. Join Michaela Gleave post-show for an in-depth artist talk at 6.30pm. [In]Place draws on the creative output of five visual artists who have worked in collaboration with experienced animator Helena Papageorgiou to transform their work into an animated and interactive experience, supported by the EyeJack app. Exploring the fluid nature of the environment, both individually and collectively, the [In]Place artists search for presence, transition and transformation through Augmented Reality (AR) play. All five works are presented across Nambour, collectively forming an interactive art trail. [In]Place artists are Carley Cornelissen, Claire Matthews, James Muller, Kellie O’Dempsey and Pamela See. Join us for the official opening of [In]Place, with a panel discussion (see p66) and live performance from [In]Place artist Kellie O’Demspey and sound composer Mick Dick. Sydney company Branch Nebula brings their breath-taking, anarchic street-style performance to the Alex Head’s skate park. Branch Nebula’s team will infiltrate the park for a whole week, jamming moves and tricks with the locals and building up for a spectacular improvised performance at the end. With a live drummer driving the action, bodies and wheels collide, race each other and blur into one. Branch Nebula and its team of professional skaters, BMX riders, dancers and parkourists have wowed audiences from Sydney Festival to Hong Kong, Finland and Chile, from Mandurah to the Gold Coast, winning the prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Visual or Physical Theatre Production. Now it’s the Sunshine Coast’s turn! Snake Sessions was commissioned by Bundanon Trust and developed with the support of Critical Path. Contact, transform, loop, reimagine – revolve. Revolve brings together 12 of Queensland’s youngest circus stars, experienced artists and a live DJ to create a show that’s bursting at the seams with energy and fun. Circles, loops, wheels, group bikes, roller skates, unicycles and even a tractor tyre are jammed onto the stage to create a whirling cacophony of wheeling wonder. The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is one of the most dynamic and prestigious visual arts awards in Australia. The diverse range of works by established and emerging artists from across the country will be showcased in an exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery from 25 July-15 September. The 2019 art prize finalists exhibition will be a reflection of outstanding contemporary 2D arts practice in Australia. Let these strangers guide you through their impromptu, unconventional and intense moments of intimacy through virtual reality, as you explore the beautiful, the challenging, the mundane and the surreal aspects of being human. Join leading artists working with technology as they deep dive into how art and tech collide. The panel will be moderated by Sutu aka Stuart Campbell, VR artist + film maker and co-founder of EyeJack. Sutu will be joined by panellists who are paving the way in art and technology. Expect to be challenged, provoked and slightly uncomfortable in your shoes. The panel will be followed by a live performance from [In]Place artist Kellie O’Demspey and sound composer Mick Dick.

Join Australian sound artist Leah Barclay on this guided walk, exploring connection to place through auditory perception and deep listening. The walk will involve exploring our sonic environment and using new technologies to reveal invisible ecosystems we usually cannot hear. This will include sounds beneath the surface of the water, microbats navigating the urban environment at dusk and the acoustic ecology deep beneath our feet. The real-time soundscapes will weave with the voices of traditional owners and sonic art to create an immersive and embodied listening experience.

In partnership with the Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance and The Big Anxiety, Horizon Festival presents The Deconstructed Breakfast. The Big Anxiety brings together artists, scientists and communities to question and re-imagine the state of mental health in the 21st century. With guest speakers Professor Jill Bennett and artist Debra Keenahan, The Deconstructed Breakfast will create a space and conversation that promotes curiosity, awareness and action which facilitates the rich engagements needed for our collective mental health. Embracing the awkwardness of human conversation, Awkward Conversations offers a unique opportunity for intimate one-on-one conversations in experimental formats, tackling anxieties, debilitating habits and hard-to-talkabout subjects like mental health. Awkward Conversations expand the idea of how conversations may work. Conversations can be difficult, so how can we make them easier, different and explore our conversational mode to encourage diverse approaches to meaningful exchange. Presented in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance, The Big Anxiety and SunCentral – delivering the new Maroochydore City Centre.

HORIZON INDUSTRY PROGRAM Our Horizon Industry Program builds capacity in our region by providing professional development opportunities locally and connecting artists and communities with a strong national and international context.

SEEDPOD PILOT
Seedpod Pilot is the first Queensland-based residency program from Victorian Live Arts organisation, Punctum. Hitting the Coast in 2020, the residency program will create a safe space for artists to test ideas, undertake experiments, develop new work and take risks in a collaborative environment. VENUE MENTORSHIP
Arts industry leader Liz Burcham is working with The Old Ambulance Station, Nambour on building the venue’s capacity and sustainability. With the growth of arts and culture on the Sunshine Coast gathering momentum, The Old Ambulance Station is well placed to play a key role and this mentorship brings a resource to assist with capitalising on this opportunity. HORIZON SEEKERS
In partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast, the Horizon Seekers program is a hands-on skills development and internship where promising students are selected to work alongside the management team behind Horizon Festival. FIRST NATIONS ARTIST DEVELOPMENT
Connecting to Country is a pilot artist development program where five Kabi Kabi and Jinabara artists are mentored to develop new works for showcase at Horizon 2019.
