24 AUG - 2 SEP 2018
Welcome IN PROGRESS WELCOME TO QUEENSLAND’S BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE COAST FOR THIS YEAR’S HORIZON FESTIVAL – THE REGION’S SIGNATURE MULTI-ARTS FESTIVAL. This festival is part of Queensland’s vibrant events calendar, where visitors can immerse themselves in 10-days of arts-fuelled entertainment, including performance, visual art, music, street art, comedy, theatre and more. The Horizon Festival 2018 celebrates local artists alongside Australian and international guests, showcasing local creative talent and exposing the audience to unique arts experiences. The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism Industry Development
The Palaszczuk Government recognises the importance of events to drive tourism, boost the state’s economy and support local communities. We are proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program. Congratulations to the event organisers, volunteers and all those involved in delivering the Horizon Festival. I encourage all visitors to explore the diverse tourism offerings throughout the Sunshine Coast region and come away with some amazing Queensland memories.
WELCOME TO THE THIRD HORIZON FESTIVAL HERE ON OUR HEALTHY, SMART, CREATIVE SUNSHINE COAST. Each year, Horizon provides a great opportunity for our local artists, alongside specially invited national and international guests, to come together and showcase their talents to the community and the many visitors to our region. And what it has already achieved in promoting our arts and culture sector is quite remarkable. In its first two years, close to 90,000 people attended Horizon events – an amazing illustration of how quickly it has been embraced by both locals and those from outside our region. Mayor Mark Jamieson Sunshine Coast Council
My thanks go to our festival partners for your support and for sharing our love of arts and culture. Thankyou also to the hundreds of dedicated artists, producers, organisers, event managers, committees, curators, workers and volunteers who have come together to bring you a wonderfully diverse Horizon 2018. I’m sure everyone who puts Horizon on their schedule will take away some wonderful memories and a deeper appreciation of arts and culture here on our Sunshine Coast.
Acknowledgment of Country Sunshine Coast Council and Horizon Festival acknowledge the traditional Country of the Kabi Kabi and the Jinibara Peoples of the coastal plains and hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast. We recognise that these have always been places of cultural, spiritual, social and economic significance. We wish to pay respect to their Elders – past, present and emerging and acknowledge the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within our creative community.

Songs of Emzara IT WAS EMZARA WHO PROPHESIED THE GREAT FLOOD AND SAW THE NEED FOR AN ARK THAT COULD CARRY AS MANY SPECIES AS POSSIBLE, SAVING THEM FROM CERTAIN EXTINCTION. SHE WAS OFTEN HEARD COMMUNICATING WITH ANIMALS THROUGH SONGS, WHICH WERE PASSED ON TO HER DAUGHTERS, GRANDDAUGHTERS AND SO ON. THESE WERE THE ‘SONGS OF EMZARA’. Songs of Emzara is a tribute to the species who, at this moment ,struggle for their survival – the Indri indri, Black Crested Gibbon, Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, Blakiston’s Fish Owl, Booroolong Frog, Blue-throated Macaw… and many more. Performed by Dangerous Song, a collaboration between Lizzie O’Keefe and Linsey Pollak, Songs of Emzara combines the human voice with the sounds of endangered animals. This sonic world is mirrored by the projection of images of our endangered planet onto the performers themselves and lighting the natural world around them, creating a multi-dimensional experience for the audience.

From award-winning NZ company Trick of the Light Theatre, Moffat Creative presents a story of mystery, magic and mayhem. An old man sits down to read the tale of an erstwhile bookbinding apprentice. As he speaks, the story spills from the pages and into the bindery – from pop-up book to puppetry, story-telling to live action – weaving an original, dark fairy tale in the vein of Neil Gaiman.

TERROR NULLIUS SODA_JERK’S TERROR NULLIUS IS A POLITICAL REVENGE FABLE WHICH OFFERS AN UN-WRITING OF AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL MYTHOLOGY. The epic remix works entirely within and against the official archive, in order to achieve a queering and othering of Australian cinema. Part political satire, eco-horror and road movie, TERROR NULLIUS is a world in which minorities and animals conspire, and notso-nice white guys finish last. Where idyllic beaches host race-riots, governments poll love-rights, and the perils of hypermasculinity are overshadowed only by the enduring horror of Australia’s colonising myth of terra nullius. Join Soda_Jerk for a Q&A after the screening. DATE TUE 28 AUG TIME 7PM, Q&A TO FOLLOW AT 8PM LOCATION MAJESTIC CINEMAS AND EVENT CENTRE, NAMBOUR PRICE $11.50 – $17
