April 2009 Next General Meeting – Wednesday 1 April All members are invited to attend our next General Meeting to be held on Wednesday 1 April at 8.00pm. This will be an added income source for our Club, come along and find out all about it! Prior to the meeting, from 6.30pm, we will be holding a barbecue tea. $10.00 per person includes all you can eat meat and salad as well as four raffle tickets (Please note that you can purchase more raffle tickets at the normal cost of 4 tickets for $2.00). From the President – Michael Keenan In keeping with the need for a Board to be pro-active, informed and accountable, the last meeting of the Club’s Board agreed to set up an internal audit committee. Not only is such a committee Best Practice it has become legislated requirement of Local Government, and in the US and Britain, in the wake of the recent financial instability, internal audit committees are mandated aspects of not for profit organisations. The internal audit committee has a critical role in extending the work of the Treasurer in managing the finances of the Club and in ensuring that the governance of the Club by reviewing the capacity to control expenses and to manage and fund activities. At the last Section Head forum, several matters were raised that could be addressed by an effective internal audit committee. These issues ranged across the spectrum from the irritating and minor to matters of good practice. They all addressed the way in which work is done. Internal Audit processes examine and evaluate such “ways of work” or the systematic processes of the Club. So whilst some might crudely title an internal audit committee a razor gang, which does convey some of the task, there is a lot more to be done, even in an intimate organization such as the Sporting Car Club. As such the Audit Committee, which is to be chaired by Rodney Gibb, is the fourth part of the Board’s infrastructure. With its peer standing committees – Facilities, Finance and Governance - the committees once staffed by the Board and Club members will enable information to be processed, plans to be developed and, most importantly, both the implementation and monitoring of those plans. One other important undertaking of the Board at its last meeting was to review its connection to the major internal structures of the Club, namely the Sections. It was agreed to follow through with the Section Heads the development of a more formal set of arrangements for getting the section’s input into the Board debates and to have the energies and organizational skills of the sections more effectively tapped. A key proposal is the recognition by the Board of the Section Forum as a stranding committee of the Board. This would ensure that its deliberations would be incorporated into the Board agenda. It may even mean the development of a direct input through a Section Forum delegate addressing the Board in the consideration of the Forum minutes.

Planning is in the final stages for Easter Mallala Historics. As the Falcon GT’s will be holding their National meeting in Adelaide at the same time, the big Fords will be on display on the Sunday at the track, then culminating with a regularity event. Murray Carter and John French will also be doing parade laps in their original Bathurst GTHO Phase 3 Falcons. This is not to be missed by any Ford enthusiast. We would appreciate some help parking the anticipated 250 Fords who are attending on Sunday. Please contact any member of the HRR team. Morgan was the theme on centre stage for the March HRR meeting. Tony Heard had an immaculately restored 1973 Morgan +44 on display which was also featured in a 1980’s Amoco advertising campaign. John Harrigan had an immaculately restored Morgan 1977 + 8 in silver livery. The master of Lobethal, Tony Parkinson showcased a 1936 Morgan 4-4, chassis number 79 which is undergoing a complete ground up rebuild. This car was only the second 4 wheeled Morgan imported into Australia. This car was extensively raced by Jim Boughton of Melbourne, participating in the Australian Grand Prix at Bathurst in 1938 and Lobethal 1939. This car is credited with punting Alan Tomlinson off the track in the 1939 Lobethal race and ending his career. Next Meeting - Tuesday 12 May

News from the Collingrove Committee After very successful Winter Cup and State Titles members of the Committee met with the Contractors responsible for the work on the Return Road. The result was the Contractor would resurface the Return Road at no further cost to the Club. There has also been a hot-mix extension to the Run Off Area at the end of the track to enable cars to stop more easily. The next area being the Entry to the Return Road has also been hot-mixed to keep a ‘clean’ surface where cars can turn off the Track and enter the Return Road. The Track has a number of cracks through the hot-mix. Quotes are being submitted to the Board to gain approval to seal the damaged areas to prevent further water from penetrating into the Track Base. A Tag Heuer system has been selected for our New Timing System. The Supplier has advised the Committee that cables will be the most reliable method of ‘hooking up’ the Timing System. Quotes are being collected for the trenching required. The selected system should enable progress towards allowing two cars on the Track at one time. It is hoped that Stage 1 is operating as soon as possible. Stage 2 will involve an appropriate Timing/Information Display Board with the capacity to feature more than one car in action. This may require some Fundraising to get the units needed. Also the ‘Clipsal Control Room’, a 6m by 12m building will be relocated to Collingrove as soon as a base area is selected and prepared. Future Events of Interest - Collingrove will be included in a round of the National HillClimb Series – more details to follow as they come to hand. Please email speed@collingrove.hillclimb.com.au for further information or suggestions. Michael Bishop, on behalf of the Collingrove HillClimb Committee.

Clipsal 2009 By the time you get this newsletter Clipsal will be over again for another year. On behalf of the Sporting Car Club we would like to congratulate Glenda and Tony Grove on working at their eleventh consecutive Clipsal 500. An article appeared in the Boomer Section of the Advertiser in early March. A copy of that article is on the Club notice board for anyone interested in having a look. Tony and Glenda have been involved with motorsport in many various roles for 50 years. Well done!

We would also like to thank all those who volunteered their time again this year, to help make everything run smoothly. In particular, a great big thank you to our crew who manned the Murray Walker Extreme Machines Museum. This is manned by specially selected volunteers on a voluntary basis and is worked on a roster system. Warren Schirmer was once again instrumental in setting up and assisting these volunteers.

Round 1 SA State Motor Racing Champs Mallala – 28 February Our first event for the year, a twilight race meeting attracted 124 entries and a very reasonable crowd of spectators. The weather was very kind to us and each category had 3 races. There was some very good racing during the day with the open wheelers and when the sun went down, the cars with lights raced, and as always it looks entirely different under the circuit lighting with some very close duals. Many thanks to all officials for their time and special thanks to Bill and Glenda Hackett and their band of helpers for the excellent meals served to the officials during the breaks, also to Peter Green for the apples. The next round of the State Championships is a two day event of 2/3 May.
