From the New CEO I was delighted to be appointed General Manager of the Sporting Car Club of SA. It will be a privilege to become a member of your organisation as a part of the administration and management team. The professional management experiences I have gained during my career have been predominately as the Chief Executive of agribusiness membership organisations. More recently I have had the great honour of leading the restructure of the business that manages South Australia’s tall ship the One and All and the One and All Youth Development Program. Generally, my career in membership based organisations has focused on developing membership services, promoting the organisations, enhancing the role of members, generating additional revenue whilst retaining core functions and services, and developing best practice policies. I am looking forward with anticipation to commencing with the SCCSA on 3rd February and in due course meeting many of you. Philip Marshall

Vintage News Past Events The Armstrong Siddeley night (January meeting) was a successful start to the New Year. On stage were my 1933 20 hp and visitors John and Allison Colebrook’s 1929 20 hp – this was purchased new by Johns grandfather. Thanks to Garth and Barbara Pennington for an entertaining power point presentation on the history and workings of the preselector gearbox, which was the Vintage Section’s first TechTorque of the year. The number and depth of questions from the audience confirmed a high level of interest. This year the Vintage section will be incorporating some more TechTorque sessions to ensure the baton of knowledge is passed on! T Party – About 40 SCCSA members in a wide variety of cars supported this joint event –it was most successful –thanks to the Model T club for organising the event. Coming Meeting Friday 13 February – The meeting will be a bit different - this will be a Trike night! No, not the type we had as children but the Volkswagen powered machines that we see from time to time on the road. Members of the Trike Club will provide full details of these interesting machines! Coming events Sunday 15 February - Early Bird Run – meet at the clubrooms at 7 am for a 7.30 am start. Last year’s lucky winners, Arthur and Nola Clisby have arranged an interesting and flat run, suitable for cars of all ages. For catering purposes please let Sandra at the front office or Ruth Day (0423 096 563) know who you are and the number of people you are bringing on or before Thursday 12 February. “Burra Bash” weekend trip 23/24 May 2009 – Bookings open at the February meeting at which time full costs will be advised. This will be a fun, inexpensive weekend which will include a visit to Goode’s Restorations business at Clare. Numbers are limited so don’t miss out! Andrew Christophersen

Competition News There have been a few changes in the Competition Section. Lyn Punshon has retired from the Chairman’s position and Vince Ciccerallo has taken on the role. This was brought about because of Lyn’s recent appointment as Acting Chairman of the CAMS Australian Motor Racing Commission and the increased workload this involves. We also now have a new person in the Special Events area looking after all our competition events. Penny Gordon has joined and she will be taking on the event management role vacated by Julian. Penny has a huge amount of experience in this area that extends from her role in the Media Centre area of the Clipsal 500 Adelaide to The Fink Desert Rally and the Hidden Valley V8 Supercar round. In the past Penny was also involved in hotel management (some would say she still keeps her hand in this area by visiting various bars). We are all set for the start of the Circuit racing season with the first State round at Mallala being a Twilight meeting Saturday February 28.

HRR News Please note the next HRR Section meeting will be held on Tuesday 10 March. Hope to see as many HRR members as possible there! February 2009

HQ News Being between seasons, there is not a lot to report on the racing side. The presentation dinner held on the 22nd of November was a huge success and everyone enjoyed the company of our special guest Phil Brock "On the Couch". Alison has sent out HQRA membership renewals and the dates of our race meetings in SA. The hill climb "points round" will again be on the weekend of the South Australian Hillclimb Championship. The committee is in the process of organising a SA vs VIC Challenge which will be run over two meetings, one being our Enduro and the other hopefully at Sandown. Early stages, but watch this space. The Hurricane Wheel venture has been completed with one set (4) remaining in stock. These are available at $540.00 for a short time. If they are not sold by the end of February they will be advertised on the open market. Our monthly meetings will continue to be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the SCC Clubrooms.

Lobethal News Lobethal Grand Carnival 2009 Entries for the 2009 event are close to closing (January 30th) for competition/sports cars and bikes in the following categories: 1. Genuine Lobethal, 2. pre-1948, 3. pre 1962. The 2009 event will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the AGP meeting at Lobethal won by an MG TA special driven by Allan Tomlinson of WA. Now 93, Allan will return (and drive) at Lobethal this year. Featured marques are MG and Alfa Romeo and the exciting news thus far is that P3 Grand Prix Alfas from the US have confirmed entry. One is the ex-Nuvolari 1935 German-GP winning car. For more information, check the event website: www.lobethalgrandcarnival.com.au.

“LEGEND OF LOBETHAL” Copies of the 48-page history of bike and car races at Lobethal over the 1937-48 period are now available at the SCCSA front office at $25 each. This book is a “must have” for students of the State’s motor racing heritage. It features results detail and over 100 period photographs.

New Website The new site is finally up and running. Have a look at www.sportingcarclubsa.org.au. The section editors are getting as much info in as they can and it will become more informative as the information is entered. We are still working on the Gallery area and should have that operational in the next few weeks. Once that is operating, you will be able to look in there for event pictures, etc. Any Members who would like to comment or see something different on the website, speak to your Section Chairperson or contact the office. It will then be discussed and decided whether applicable. Happy browsing!

Club Merchandise Alan Caire is currently looking at a range of new merchandise. A Club business shirt has been ordered and we are hoping to have samples available at the Club General Meeting on Wednesday 4 February. We are hoping to have further samples of apparel available soon. Also on the list of possibilities is a 75th Anniversary Club Medallion. Don’t forget the Numberplate surrounds which are already available from the Club. Watch this space for more details as they arrive.
