Lobethal News A big crowd turned out for the second staging of the Lobethal Grand Carnival over the October Long Weekend. Highlights were many but perhaps first ranked was the attendance of the event Patron, and 1939 AGP winner, Allan Tomlinson, who endeared himself to all he encountered. The US-based cars made a huge splash and for that we acknowledge the commitment of Jon Shirley, Peter Giddings and Jim Stranberg in bringing the cars to Australia. Weather forced some last minute re-jigging but after a massive effort by all concerned - officials and volunteers especially, the clouds parted on cue and the event proceeded safely as planned. Major sponsorship by Clipsal 500 Adelaide and SA Tourism Commission with the backing of many quality sponsors and a raft of media coverage by Channel 7, "The Advertiser", "Mount Barker Courier" and the "Hills Weekender" ensured the event high awareness. The organisers wish to sincerely thank all those who gave selflessly to the staging of Lobethal 2009. Without your help, the task of staging this challenging event would have been impossible, a scenario we are sure was the case 70 years ago.

Classic News Coming Meetings Friday 6 November It's 50 years this year since the release of the Mini and we plan to celebrate this occasion with 4 different Minis. Firstly, the meeting is proudly sponsored by Adelaide BMW and Mini Garage and they will have on display the latest Mini, ie the Mini diesel, reputed to be Australia's most fuel efficient car @ 3.9l/100km. Next to the new Mini will be two gorgeous original Cooper "S’s and to fill the stage an original Morris 850, the way it all started. All Mini lovers should be in attendance, please feel free to bring a friend. Goss Bar open for small drinks from 6pm, meeting proper from 8pm in the Reg Spark's Room. Supper will be served after the meeting. Friday 4 December This will be the last Classic meeting for 2009 and traditionally belongs to BEA. Peter Kay promises another delicious pair of Mercedes Benz, one brand new offering from the showroom, the other a beautiful classic Benz from his or Ray's collection. There will be lovely raffle prizes on offer; supper will have a Christmas flavour. Do come and enjoy our last meeting and soak up the Mercedes Benz brand. Goss Bar opens at 6pm and meeting proper from 8pm. Do bring a guest or friend. Coming Events Sunday 15 November We have put together a beautiful Garden Run and plan to visit the historic Playford family garden at Norton Summit, where we will have BYO morning tea. Then we proceed onto the DayLily Garden at Lenswood where we will have our BYO lunch. The cost is a small $5pp and a $2 run fee per car is payable on the day. Booking can be done via the club office/info also available on our website. Entry forms will be available at the November 6 meeting. Entries close Friday 13 November. Friday 1 January 2010 This is an event and meeting combined. Our traditional Meeting on the Move will start from the carpark on Fullarton Road outside the old Victoria Park Racecourse from 5.45pm for a 6.30pm start. We will cruise through the hills in the evening sunshine and arrive at the Belair Country Club for complimentary pre dinner drinks, followed by a delicious meal and drinks can be purchased from the bar. The raffle is usually huge and Tim Carrig normally mortgage's himself to one lucky raffle ticket holder. This event is always well patronised and has a limit of 140 people. Book early to avoid disappointment and remember the club closes over Christmas. Cost will be very reasonable, entry forms available from the club office and at both November and December Classic meetings. Encourage your friends, get your soft top down and enjoy the warm summer air in your hair. Andy Morgan

Lobethal News – continued from front page To Dee and Leah McLean, Sarina Waterman and the crew at SCCSA - Penny, Julian, Neville, Sandra and Janet in particular, big, big thanks for working so hard. Special mention to our great Club stalwart, Ray Pank who competed at Lobethal in 1938-39. Quite remarkable that Ray ran his Hudson Special around the old circuit with alacrity, earning himself the event's "Aggregate Trophy" for the highest combined entrant and car age. Ray enjoyed his time with Allan Tomlinson who he has known for many years, both through motor sport and business. They took valuable time out, especially at Vintage Collingrove, to

reminisce on times and events most of us have only ever read about. As for the future of Lobethal, post mortems will be held over the next 2-4 weeks to decide the event's future - and to identify all the bugs that need ironing out. However, for our gratification, in a letter from Peter Rayner (AJS 7R) who was awarded "Best Sounding Motor Bike", he stated that in more than 50 years of motor racing, the three days at Lobethal were the "most enjoyable he has ever experienced." Let's hope we can all feel that, not just about Lobethal, but about every event we get to run in or be part of. Please note: DVD covering original footage, Lobethal 2008, interview with Allan Tomlinson and more is available on the Lobethal website: www.lobethalgrandcarnival.com.au (ON LINE SHOP), or at the Club.

Library News For a top experience on ‘drivers roads’ you can’t do much better than Tasmania. Time out recently was an extended weekend in Tasmania and nearly 1000kms of rural driving. You don’t have to speed to enjoy the countryside or take in its history and see so many of its colonial buildings. “Almost every corner has a surprise vista around it” a friend of mine from Sydney once said. Sadly, there is hardly anything left of the famous old Longford Motor Racing Circuit, which used to be the longest and fastest course in Australia. It was also looked forward to by the visiting Internationals in the Tasman Series. The main book we have on it is “FAST TRACK BACK” by Barry Green, which tells of its brief but unforgettable 14 race meeting era from 1953 to 1968. It also contains plenty of antics and anecdotes. We have a lot of Tasman Series history, race information and even programmes for perusal in the Library. Collingrove history compilation is well under way with valuable assistance from Ron Johnson. Collingrove is an important asset of the Club, so it is important that all available information is kept together. If any member has, or knows someone who has any photographs etc which we should include, please bring them in to the Library. All material used can be returned to you. Now that the V8 Supercar series with its traditional Holden / Ford rivalry is drawing to a close we can think of some of the other famous motorsport rivalries. One of the most famous was that between Maserati and Ferrari in ‘The Golden Era’. We have a book in the Library, RED HOT RIVALS by prolific author Karl Ludvigsen who was there at the time and witnessed some of the epic battles, and mixed with some of the designers and engineers. The book details model by model battles in sports cars and racing cars, and tells of some thrilling racing at the time when rear engined racing cars were replacing the traditional front engined racers. Veteran News Coming Meetings Friday November 20 – Vintage Racing cars on stage – their owners Rory Hope, Phillip Bradey & Ian Motley will speak about their vehicles. The Vintage Section will join our meeting on this night. Friday December 11 – Veteran Section will join the Vintage Christmas meeting. See Vintage notes for the theme of the evening. There will not be a Veteran Section meeting on December 18. Coming Events Saturday November 21 – RAA Trophy Day – this year our hillclimb will be in the Seacliff area. Start from John Miller Reserve, cnr Whyte St & Esplanade, Somerton Park at 9.30am for BYO morning tea. BYO lunch too. Sunday December 6 – Club Picnic at Fullarton Park, corner of Fullarton Rd & Fisher St, Fullarton. 11am-4pm. All welcome. January 1, 2010 – New Year’s Day Breakfast – this year it will be a BYO breakfast at Waterfall Gully Reserve at Burnside from 9.30am. All club members and friends are welcome.

Vintage News Previous events/meetings October 9 was our metal /plastic polishing night. Far from being a ‘dull’ occasion, Jim Joseph and Kay Pilkington from Josco Products provided a fascinating demonstration and sparkling explanation of Josco’s products. Their polished presentation gave us plenty to reflect on! October 5 was our Collingrove Canter. Nature provided a delightful, if slightly cool day for a drive through the Barossa to Collingrove where we enjoyed some great Vintage motorsport. Nothing better than sitting with friends and watching such an enthusiastic display. Thanks to Bob Congdon, the Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb Committee and the volunteers for all of their hard work. Coming Meeting Friday November 20 As advised earlier our November meeting will be held in conjunction with the Veteran section – no doubt this will be a great night with the MG K3 and Singer Lemans on the stage along with their enthusiastic owners! Coming events Sunday November 8 is our Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Meet at 9 am for a 9.30 start at the club rooms. We will have a short drive through the southern hills, stopping for a BYO morning tea and then travelling on for a BYO picnic lunch. Dress up as a “Mad March Hare” or a “Mad Hatter” – prizes for the maddest hat or bunny ears! Dressing up is optional, dressing is compulsory! November 14. Please note that due to lack of support the Hangar Dance has had to be cancelled. Those people who have booked will receive a refund. Andrew Christophersen

Fleurieu News This is the last call for anyone interested in the run to the Coonawarra on Friday 13 – Sunday 15 November (with Sunday night optional). If I can have confirmation (jrainsford@msn.com) or 0417 227 846 that you are attending this run by Wednesday 4 November with your numbers and if you have any other queries (room rates, etc), then I can confirm with Chardonnay Lodge. Look forward to seeing you then for another fun run. Judy Rainsford

HRR News For our final 2009 HRR meeting 10th November we have a delicious record breaking high performance vehicle on stage to tempt your taste buds, Trevor Lambert’s 1922 Willy’s Overlander. It once held the fastest time between Melbourne and Adelaide in a resounding time of 14hrs and 51 minutes. The Lobethal Grand Carnival was held on the October long weekend 3rd-4th which celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the Australian TT and Grand Prix meetings held on the famous 8.65 mile circuit. Strong involvement by the HRR fraternity helped make the weekend a great success. The sight and sounds of yesteryear were once again brought to life on this hallowed circuit once haled as one of the best in the world. Official’s day is 19th December at Mallala Motorsport Park; The HRR would like to acknowledge the sterling job, always done with a passion and devotion by Officials who donate their time. The HRR committee has begun planning for next years’ Mallala Easter Historic’s, the event next year will also be the opening round of the Australian Historic Touring Car Association, a full field is expected. Historic Sandown is scheduled for 6th thru 8th November; we can expect a strong local field attending. The date for the VHRR Phillip Island Classic has been set for March 19-21st 2010. th Next HRR meeting November 10

November 13-15 Weekend of Fun Fleurieu

In 2006 and 2007 we organised runs to the Lake Goldsmith Steam Rallies in Victoria. These were enjoyable events and were attended by Club Members who showed interest in attending the next Steam Rally at Booleroo in South Australia. The Booleroo Steam & Traction Preservation Society has been contacted and have welcomed the Club to attend the Rally. We will be able to park on the Booleroo Oval and participate in the Parade of vehicles. We have been advised that the cost of entry at Booleroo is $7 for adults (we will attempt to negotiate this!) The Booleroo Society’s next event will be held on the 28th of March, 2010. As a result we have worked out an itinerary for a Rally to the Booleroo event which is as follows: Thursday 25 March: Adelaide to Burra (156 km) Friday 26 March: Burra to Wilmington (171 km) Saturday 27 March: Wilmington Sunday 18 March: Wilmington to Booleroo Steam Rally then Clare (153 km) Monday 29 March; Clare to Adelaide (92 km) The event is open to all Club Members and will be suitable for (larger) Veteran, Vintage or Classic vehicles. If you are unable to attend every day you are welcome to attend part of the event. Accommodation suggestions are: Burra- Paxton Cottages or the Burra Caravan Park (1300 668400) Wilmington – Beautiful Valley Caravan Park (08 8667 5197) Clare – Clare Caravan Park (08 8842 3447) All three Caravan Parks have cabins or on site van/camping sites. Jaguar Owners When requiring parts for most model Jaguar cars, try Welsh Enterprises in the USA, website address www.welshent.com or for requests by email info@welshent.com. They have a large range of spares and accessories at very reasonable prices, provide excellent fast service / delivery and in one case where an incorrect part was sent, the manner in which it was handled by this company was very satisfactory. Highly recommended
