From the President President December 2008 to September 2009. I would like to thank all the members for making my time as President eventful and challenging. I especially thank the staff of the Club and their volunteer helper. With General Managers coming and going they kept calm, got on with the business and did more than could be reasonably expected of them. The Club is very fortunate to have them, the Board is even more fortunate and the President is highly grateful. The Club is also fortunate in having a wide choice of candidates for the upcoming election. It shows real interest in Club affairs by the membership and a willingness to contribute that will be a motivator for all. The great pity is that only three of the candidates can get a place at the table. I would like to pay tribute to the contribution made by the retiring members Mark Goldsmith, Lyn Punshon and Colin Bourner. Each is a different personality and talent but each was able and very willing to blend their skills and capacities for the benefit of the Club. I have a host of people to thank for making me welcome and making my job easier; I can single out many but I will point to Graham Boulter who made my task of presiding over the general meetings both easier and more enjoyable. As he has been around the world finding other Graham Boulters, we know that there is a supply of them should he not be available. John Burt and Warren Schirmer were also quietly helping in the background. John in particular has done unsung but inestimable work with Penny in the Events Office. I congratulate Colin on becoming Secretary Manager of the Club. His job is different to that of the General Manager’s to date and reflects the Boards desire to have a different focus. There are many challenges on the horizon; Tailem Bend, events at Mallala, New Timing Systems, Burn Out Pads, CAMS restructuring, balancing the budget, attracting younger members, Car launches, ensuring succession, keeping alive the history (finding more space for the best car library in Australasia) maintaining the Club building (including making sure Dads’ Army lives forever), finding income, creating involvement, developing volunteers and the list goes on. I wish my successor, who will be determined at the Presidential elections, all fortitude in dealing with these demanding, often subtle and always complex issues. As a last thank you - to the section heads and committees who make the stuff on the ground work, be it a Hill Climb or a rally. They were there at the start of the Club and th they are still making things happen at the 75 birthday. Michael Keenan President

Library News Motor Cycles are making a comeback, but have they really gone away? This was brought home to me during a recent ‘time out’ period when I visited a Motor Cycle Museum in a converted church in Peterborough. Ian and Belinda Spooner’s collection of very rare European bikes includes some with a good history and others which are very rare. This caused me to look up what we have on motor cycles in our extensive Library. There are almost 200 titles which include everything from biographies to workshop manuals to magazines to technical articles and service bulletins. Then there is famous Australian engine designer (Vincent HRD, Velocette, Repco Brabham and others) Phil Irving’s autobiography and his other famous books like TUNING FOR SPEED. (I remember Phil telling us that a multi cylinder engine could be designed using the principle that it was just a collection of single cylinders.) We also have Phil Read’s book, John Surtees’ book, Barry Sheene’s book, Mick Doohan’s book along with others and several on Speedway and also some videos all available for borrowing. Incidentally if you go to Peterborough you should go to Eldon Zimmerman’s “Meldonfield” and see how he constructs wooden coach wheels in miniature, using age old methods and engineering principles. He is just so knowledgeable and entertaining that he should be classified as a “Living Treasure” We have two volumes of the very fine book ZAGATO, SEVENTY YEARS IN THE FAST LANE, by Michele Marchiano which are together in a slip cover. They detail the transformation of this company from a coachbuilder of fine motor cars to providing comprehensive styling, engineering and prototype services not just to major automotive manufactures, but also to a wide variety of other design activities including heavy equipment, railway transport systems and agricultural vehicles. These are a very good read and available now for borrowing. Michael Gasking

HRR News No formal general meeting was held this month, instead Peter Hall, South Australia’s historic racing commission representative and Adam Willis, state manager for CAMS conducted a forum as a way of canvassing the ideas and interests of South Australia’s historic racing fraternity. The idea is to hold at least two of these meetings every year prior to the national CAMS meetings to raise awareness of issues facing our sport. It was a very positive meeting with great involvement from all interested parties. Some of the major discussions focused on the fabulous historic race cars hidden away in peoples garages and the way to get these cars back out in the public spotlight to ensure our sport remains strong. The 130% rule was also hotly debated as it is applied in some situations to the detriment of the sport. Alistair Turnbull is now officially one of the Dodge brothers as he now campaigns the 1937 and 1939 ex Hardwick/Woodberry Dodges. Where are the Ford boys when you need them! Scheduled for the October long weekend 3-4 is the Lobethal Grand Carnival which will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Australian TT and Grand Prix meetings held on the famous 8.65 mile circuit. 1939 AGP winner Allan Tomlinson, the event patron is expected to make the trip from New York where, aged 93, he now resides with his daughter. Featured marques for 2009 are MG and Alfa Romeo. Vintage aircraft will also be a feature at Lobethal in 2009. In the Pipe line for 2010 is a return to Speed Week, encompassing Mallala Easter, a Historic Hill climb, and a yet to be announced new event featuring a sprint and vintage aircraft somewhere south. The Historic Racing Register would like to formally acknowledge Ann Ozgo for her commitment to the HRR, her ongoing contribution to the club and all things historic and welcome our new committee members, Troy Ryan and Trevor Lambert. Next meeting Tuesday September 8. If you would like more information regarding the HRR section please contact Phil Carter 0417876484.

celebration of the 2009 Bay to Birdwood Classic Run. The Classic Section of the SCC has put together a run to the Normanville Hotel for lunch, will involve a lovely run through the Fleurieu Peninsula and a chance for us to befriend some of the interstate visitors and show off our classic cars and our classic country roads. Entry forms can be obtained from the SCC office or from the Cruising Classic office at Glandore. We recommend this event to any classic car owner and it supports our club in the process. Cost will be approx $30pp. Sunday 18 October Put this date in your diary, we are planning a run to the SA Hillclimb Championships held at Collingrove. We will stop somewhere for morning tea, then proceed to Collingrove to watch the hillclimb antics. Some of you will be inspired to compete in the future! Dear CAMS Affiliated Club, Re: CAMS National Historic Motor Sport forum The CAMS National Historic Commission is mostly made up of nominated representatives from the various state-based historic panels across the nation. However, SA currently does not have such a panel and our interests on the commission are well-represented by Peter Hall. Peter has suggested that a historic motor sport forum be conducted to examine ways to improve communication between the Commission and the clubs and members in SA that have an interest in historic motorsport activities. The forum would also serve as an excellent opportunity for members and clubs to also receive an update on such issues from the Commission. Accordingly the forum will be held on Tuesday August 11th at 8pm at the Sporting Car Club of SA, 51 King William Road, Unley. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any queries and I look forward to seeing you there.
