O

n behalf of our entire

arts

and

cultural commu-

nity, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Sarasota County, a true cultural paradise. With its magnificent beaches and wealth of ecological assets, Sarasota County is one of the most beautiful communities in the country. However, what is inarguably Sarasota County’s greatest treasure is our abundance of world-renowned arts and cultural organizations, which sets us apart from many of the other beautiful counties in Florida. There are few other areas in the country that can match the quality and quantity of artistic offerings available here. From North Port and Englewood to Venice and Sarasota, we are blessed with wonderful performing arts halls, galleries, museums, botanical gardens and universities, as well as our own opera house, ballet, symphony orchestra, multiple theaters and circus. This comprehensive season guide will hopefully help you find and enjoy the collective energy of Sarasota’s arts and cultural community. If you need additional information, please contact our staff at the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. We will be happy to help you in every way possible. sarasotaarts.org | 941.365.5118, ext. 304

T

he work of local artist and Venice resident was selected out of many wonderful submissions for the cover of this guide by community arts leaders assembled by the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County.

“I started my artistic journey studying realistic oil painting for five years at the Stevenson Academy of Traditional Painting in Sea Cliff, New York and afterward at the New York School of Visual Arts (design) and New York Institute of Technology (photography). I then started illustrating book covers for most of the major publishing houses, and now work digitally, traditionally or a combination of both. The past few years I have started to develop an interest in patterns, design and a more contemporary feeling. I like to combine all the areas I have explored into each and every piece.” – Karen Chandler Ms. Chandler is affiliated with the NASA Space Art Program and the United States Airforce Art Program. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Kennedy Space Center and the Air Force Art Collection, and several of her paintings are on display in the Pentagon. Ms. Chandler’s illustrations have appeared in books published by Simon & Schuster, Bantam Books, and Random House, as well as on the covers of books written by Agatha Christie, R.L. Stein, and Victoria Thompson. karenchandlerfineart.com
