TO SEE HOW MUCH SARASOTA LOVES FOOD, just try getting a 6:30 p.m. same-day reservation at many of our popular restaurants. Expect to be asked for a second and third and even fourth choice of times before securing your seating. What a luxury to live in a beautiful setting where fine weather also accommodates outdoor dining. Speaking of outdoor dining, I was fortunate to sponsor the Conservation Foundation’s Feast Upon the Fields last month. Despite having lived in Sarasota for several years now, this was my first visit to Myakka. Event organizers had sent detailed directions to the location and suggested we allow 30 minutes travel time from UTC. Like many, I entered the address into my GPS and got on the phone. Then I chatted and cruised along, directed by GPS. A half hour later, it announced: “You have arrived.” But I was on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere and clearly had not arrived! After an attempt to backtrack and find my way, I connected with one of my guests only to discover the same thing happened to him. We met up at the same dirt road, where upon I called another guest who had arrived by now. She asked, “Did you see the blue signs everywhere?” I had to admit to being so reliant on GPS that I did not notice. Trying again, I drove up to a couple of gated compounds along the dirt road where some genuinely nice people said I was on private property and they had no idea about Feast on the Field. Finally, on my third attempt, I was directed to another dirt road about 2 miles away with a blue sign that I must have passed. Bottom line: I finally made it to the event—nearly an hour late—and discovered that the wonderful people in Myakka live in an absolutely beautiful part of our area that is in sharp contrast to our Gulf side communities and inland developments. Feast Upon the Fields was catered by Paul Mattison and all locally sourced – including the poultry, vegetables, and strawberries. It was a great time, in wonderful surroundings. Mattison’s and all the caterers in our community – including Morton’s, Michael’s on East, and others—all deserve a special shout out. They have not had an easy time of it during the last year yet continued to support our organizations and make special accommodations for virtual events. They have fed front line workers, seen dining rooms open and close and common areas squeezed. But they continue to contribute to the lifeblood of this community, regardless of the challenge. Our organizations have worked valiantly to maintain a presence over the last year. I was very pleased to get the call from Andy Sandberg of the Hermitage Arts Retreat asking for Sarasota Scene’s support for Safe Art Sarasota. This

initiative is setting a standard of keeping audiences safe through wearing of masks and maintaining social distancing at performances. I agreed immediately. Nine of the most prominent arts organizations have banded together to give voice to this effort. Now that we are being vaccinated, managing our interactions, and practicing safe protocols, it is time to support the arts through measured attendance, outdoor events, and purchasing tickets for future events. On a personal note, you may recall that I ordered a paddleboard to accommodate my high center of gravity, lack of experience, and penchant for tipping. It looks as big as a cruise ship. Recently, I scouted out a launch location and settled on Siesta Drive before the bridge. I was fortunate to run into Dan Stein of Siesta Key Paddleboards, who gave me valuable suggestions for my maiden voyage. He recommended that I follow the sand bar, avoid sharp oyster shells, and about 11:00 a.m. the next day, catch the slack tide when there is little water movement and before the winds pick up. He suggested starting on my knees to get a feel for the board and just enjoy the paddle. He also named a few other places to try, including Turtle Beach, Bird Key, Lido Beach, and Ken Thompson Park. Thank you, Dan! It’s time to band together in whatever way we can— whether it’s simply fun on the water, or supporting the arts, restaurants, and the community. Stay safe, but make the Scene! PHILANTHROPY Deb Kabinoff and the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation

When Deb Kabinoff sold her second healthcare business to a conglomerate, she decided to retire. Where else does a 40-something retire other than Florida, right? She knew exactly one person in the Sunshine State, and after visiting here, Deb just fell in love with the area. So, in 1991, Deb moved to Sarasota. “I feel so lucky to have discovered Sarasota,” she says. “To me, there could be no better place to live. We have a small, beautiful city, and a very caring, philanthropic population that is committed to supporting all of the extras that make life even better. The arts. Great healthcare. A nice environment.” It impressed her so much, in fact, that she soon convinced her entire family to move here, too. For many, that’d be the saccharine end to a sweet story of success. “But I wasn’t good at retiring,” admits Deb, who has an MBA from Cornell with a specialty in 48

operations management and is known for having a cando, on-the-go way of life. A Match.com lunch with future husband Larry Kabinoff—a contractor and real estate broker—led to the two marrying and launching North Port-based GulfStar Homes, which creates high-amenity, affordable housing. “My husband and I were both concerned about the lack of affordable housing so we could have a balanced community with nice homes where teachers, police, and grocery store clerks had a place to live along with the wealthy retirees.” To that end, GulfStar built and sold hundreds of homes under $200,000 each over the next few years. “There was always something else we wanted to accomplish,” Deb says about that period before Larry passed in 2018. “To me, it was very important to be involved in the not-for-profit organizations in town, and

to volunteer and help those organizations as much as I could.”

For Deb, that meant working with the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, where she currently serves as an at-large member of the executive committee and chair of the grants committee. In that capacity, she helps the group of board members analyze opportunities to give award grants to support Sarasota Memorial Hospital initiatives that benefit the healthcare of the community.

When asked about the appeal of working with the Healthcare Foundation, Deb says, “The Foundation brings the power of philanthropy to the hospital, and provides the hospital with that extra boost to go from great care to extraordinary care. So, for me, that’s why it’s a critical organization. Whatever challenge comes up—whether it’s building a comprehensive cancer center, or buying new beds for preemie babies to give them the best possible start, or dealing with something like a pandemic—the Healthcare Foundation is very good at targeting those areas of need, and providing immediate help. That’s certainly what we’ve done with COVID-19.”

This impulse to help was instilled in Deb from her earliest years. “My father died when I was young. And money was very tight for my mother, my sisters, and myself. Yet my mother was always involved in volunteer activities. So, while she didn’t have much money to donate, we volunteered our time.” From working at a food bank to tutoring children to delivering meals to people who

In the past, when it came to creating public service announcements, podcasts, video news releases, health/wellness videos, and similar messaging, it was handled piecemeal, and it all got outsourced. With this studio opening in March 2021, that’s no longer the case. “It’s important to be able to use technology to communicate to a wide audience in an effective way,” she says. “And this will give them the dedicated space and the technology they need to put out the most effective communications to meet the widest audience. The ability to communicate critical information is in the forefront of medical care.” For those considering getting into philanthropy, Deb recommends to “first focus on areas that are of great interest to you, whether that be healthcare, opera, theater, or animal rescue, and then find the organizations that you think are doing a great job in that area. Then help them in whatever way you can.” Deb also fosters a legacy of giving with her grandchildren. This past September, she gave the 9- and 11-year-old each 1,000 charity dollars, and said they could decide where to give those dollars—it could be $1 to 1,000 charities or $1,000 to one charity. “Over the next several months, we investigated different charities together, and they made their decisions, ending up giving money to 50

everything from a scholarship to a children’s camp to a rabbit rescue organization called Everybunny Counts—a name that I think is hilarious.” To help her make decisions and shape her life, Deb has a guiding principle. “I’m Jewish, and we have a term, tikkun olam, which means to ‘heal the earth.’ My mother really emphasized that point with us. You are fortunate to be here. It is your responsibility to leave the earth a better place for having been here.” And that’s what Deb and the Healthcare Foundation try to do—every single day.

Drum Circle Distilling/ Siesta Key Rum Prior to 2007, Troy Roberts worked as Director of Product Management at a software company and then he ran automotive websites. While those experiences developed a lot of useful workplace skills, he laughs and says it’s his “background in drinking” that best prepared him for his current job as CEO and Head Distiller for Drum Circle Distilling, the first craft distillery in Florida to make rum. Drum Circle Distilling is found in a curious location—they’re in an industrial park east of Washington Boulevard and just a bit south of DeSoto Road. But Troy says, “The moment people walk inside, it’s like Willy Wonka for adults.” I can confirm that. I went there for a rum tasting a few years back, and the ambiance was as sweet as the handcrafted drinks. If a tasting room isn’t your thing, no worries. Nearly 2,000 locations carry Siesta Key Rum—their only product— with most of those being right here in Florida. “Siesta Spirits [out on Siesta Key] was the very first store to carry the rum, but now pretty much all the local guys carry it,” Troy says. And don’t look for anything else but rum on their menu. “If I see a 50-page menu at a restaurant, nothing’s going to be good,” he says. “Yet if I go to a falafel shop and they only make falafels, it’s going to be great—it’s what they live and breathe. That’s the mindset we have here. We live and breathe rum.”

What makes Siesta Key Rum special, he says, is that they don’t cut corners in any part of the process. More to the point, they’re not dumping in chemicals to flavor their rum. If they’re making toasted coconut rum (they do!), there’s a small mountain of actual coconut in the back. “People really love our beer-barrel spiced rum,” Troy adds. “It only comes out three or four times a year, and it usually sells out right away.” Their premium distiller’s reserve—which only arrives once per year—is a fan favorite, too, along with their delicious coffee rum. Plus, Troy’s son and colleague, Wyatt, has been working on a mango rum for some time now, but like anything else they offer, it’s not being released to the public until they get it exactly right, no matter how long that takes. Troy invites you to come by and taste the difference for yourself. The behind-the-scenes tour is free, though register online in advance since groups need to stay small so long as COVID-19 remains an issue. Don’t worry, though—they’ve got a fun and safe way to show you why Siesta Key Rum is perhaps the best rum on the planet.

Loaded Cannon Distillery Steve Milligan worked for Dow Chemicals for 35 years around the world. His last assignment was in Saudi Arabia, where there’s no alcohol, so for three years, he created it himself. He enjoyed the process so much that when he returned to the US, he decided to start a distillery. “You’re a loose cannon!” laughed his brother, which Steve loved. While Loose Cannon was already taken as a beer name, Steve embraced the pirate angle and created Loaded Cannon Distillery, which set sail in Lakewood Ranch in 2019. To ensure he got the pirate theme accurate, Steve and his marketing director, Michelle Russell, worked with a historian from the Bradenton Library. “Some of these pirate stories she sent me were real, and some weren’t,” Steve admits. “But those stories need to be retold. And we decided to tell them through our alcohol.” Pirates and piracy run through this company, from the distillery itself (the Loaded Cannon “ship”) to their Anney’s Blade vodkas (named after the ferocious female pirate Anne Bonny) to Carlota’s Revenge Whiskey, named after a woman who was kidnapped by pirates and then got her revenge by sinking the pirate’s ship before taking her own life. While rumor has it that her ghost still plays dirges on a harp on the shores of the Manatee River, the whiskeys Steve’s team creates are designed to make her—or rather her restless spirit—proud. “Our best sellers are jalapeño vodka and strawberry vodka,” Steve says.

But he points out that their dark rum has a lot of people-pleasing Yo Ho Ho, too. The reason he stands behind the quality of all of their liquor is that they use Florida materials almost exclusively. Corn, rye, sugar, rice, molasses, and more—they search long and hard to find the best-quality products here in the Sunshine State, because, as Steve says, “having the right ingredients makes a real difference in terms of taste and quality.” That’s why their liquor is “copper-kissed,” as he says. All of their stills are fully copper— the preferred material for distilling because it distributes heat so well and creates even distillation. Another benefit of using copper is that it’s a great antimicrobial. It also improves the quality and aroma of the final product.

“If enough people ask for a specific new flavor, I’ll make it,” Steve says. “I enjoy the challenge. For example, one time someone asked for a chocolate vodka. I went to my office for about thirty minutes, then came back out with chocolate vodka. Normally, blending up the right flavor can take six months.” But that’s where his three decades as a chemical engineer help out— he knows what happens with you mix this with that, as well as how to utilize temperature and pressure to good effect. Loaded Cannon is getting ready to launch a whiskey-blending experience, where customers can sign up to come in and learn about blending, and then actually blend their own whiskey. It’s a rare hands-on experience for local thirsty pirates.

Domaine Chaudet Wines Through family and close friends, Sarasota has been a very important location for the Chaudet-Briaux family for many years. Plus, the family appreciates the strong sense of similarity between Sarasota and Switzerland, where the Chaudet-Briaux vineyards are located in the French-speaking town of Rivaz, on the shores of Lake Geneva (a.k.a. Lac Léman) next to the town of Vevey (home to the famous “tramp” Charlie Chaplin for the last 25 years of his life). The estate’s General Manager, fifth-generation family owner Titouan Chaudet-Briaux, was born and raised in the wine culture and hasn’t missed a single harvest since his earliest days. After completing his Swiss compulsory military service, Titouan attended a national winemaking institute where he obtained a

Federal Certificate and went on to study economics at the University of Fribourg before joining the family business. Erich Imhof, a head of international sales for Domaine Chaudet, reports that two things account for this wine’s exceptional existence. “First, there’s the variety of grapes which are indigenous to Switzerland— Chasselas for the white wine, and Gamaret-Garanoir for the reds,” he says. “For over a thousand years, only the Swiss have grown Chasselas, which must be worked by hand due to the extreme steepness of the terraces that were built by monks in the 13th century.” A good Chasselas is dry and refreshing with a slight floral expression and lots of minerality. Imhof points out that a Chasselas is low in alcohol (11.5-12% ABV)

and can easily be “enjoyed from the aperitif all the way to the cheese, with all kinds of dishes. It’s a very good all-around white wine that carries the imprint of its terroir beautifully.” While Chasselas are traditionally drunk young—often before three years old—more and more are aging them, which gives them a golden robe that’s rich with the smell of honey and beeswax, and in the mouth, it can resemble a fine dry sherry. Domaine Chaudet wine will only be available in select restaurants and wine boutiques in Sarasota this summer—for exact locations, watch for announcements on their website. They’ll also host a series of key wine-tasting events as well at some of the area hotels and restaurants.

Without a doubt, this is the type of wine that area enophiles will appreciate. Keep an eye out for Titouan’s delicious Chaudet-Briaux at your favorite wine venues toward the end of 2021.

A Day in the Life of Walsh & Associates By Carol Brzozowski

At 4:30 a.m., Walsh & Associates CEO Joe Walsh Jr. gets his day off to a strong start at the gym. A l t h o u g h h e ’s o f f t h e clock, Joe can’t help but talk through financial challenges his gym buddies and their loved ones are facing. Helping them makes Joe feel like a hero. By 9 a.m., Joe arrives at work with two tumblers of home-brewed coffee, which he nurses until he leaves the office at 6 or 7 p.m. Long days don’t burn him out because he’s never bored. “The more complex a client’s circumstances, the more interesting,” he says. “I enjoy combing through someone’s financial life looking for ways to save them money, time or strife. Whether they are a small business owner, in a second or third marriage, getting divorced or planning for a special needs heir, each situation has its unique challenges.”

Joe grabs a legal pad, draws a pie chart and labels it: Retirement, Estate, Investments, Taxes, Health or Education, Insurance. “These are the components of a comprehensive financial plan,” he says. “The goal is to help grow and protect your assets from now to retirement to death. Our job isn’t finished until your heirs get their inheritance along with a lecture on financial responsibility.” Every day in a financial advisor’s life is as different as the needs of each client. The daily goal is helping clients avoid the hundreds of possible financial mistakes they could make. Case in point: Joe recently spoke with a client redoing her trust. “I read the draft. There aren’t any protections for her special needs child if the client also becomes disabled,” he says. Joe plans to call the woman’s attorney, but first he returns a call regarding someone’s Social Security collection strategy.

Joe’s cheerful greeting and subsequent laughter on the phone makes it hard to ascertain whether he’s talking to a client or old friend. It’s easy to see why Joe was recognized as a 2021 Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisor. Advisor Michael Walsh, Joe’s middle son, watches a webinar summarizing the latest stimulus bill, a hot topic for clients wanting to know how government legislation might impact their finances. “I remind them to defer to their brains and not their stomachs when making investment decisions,” he says. “If you can’t stomach the market, you’ll always have heartburn!” Big Joe insists that being a financial advisor doesn’t feel like ‘work.’ “The job is stimulating,” he says. “I get to work alongside my three sons and a great group of employees. To top it off, I spend my days meeting clients or potential clients, which feels like I’m talking to friends or potential new friends. “I didn’t go into Finance to be a product salesman, but to help others navigate this difficult subject. Transforming Foster Care with the All Star Children’s Foundation By WIlliam Bradford Nichols

All Star Children’s Foundation and its members are on a mission to transform foster care in Florida—and maybe even across the country—from right here in Sarasota. The organization broke ground on a five-acre campus on 17th Street in November of 2017. That milestone was the fruit of over a decade’s worth of hard work. For ASCF’s founder, Graci McGillicuddy, the journey started back in 1986 when she read about a horrible case of child abuse. McGillicuddy had already raised two children of her own and until she’d read the article, didn’t even know that child abuse existed. She recalls her own childhood as idyllic. Her parents, she said, were extremely loving and wonderfully protective. “When I read it, I couldn’t stop crying,” she said. McGillicuddy turned to her husband and, remembering that it was almost her birthday, said, “Dennis, I’ve got to find a place that helps kids like this. So instead of

buying me a piece of jewelry this year, please give me money and I’ll find a place to give where they help these kids.” That is how she first came to work with the Child Protection Center, or CPC, which also operates here in Sarasota. From that moment on, she had found her calling. McGillicuddy became a member of the CPC’s Board of Directors and remains one to this day. ASCF was originally founded as a fundraising group, back in 2005, with the goal of giving grants to organizations working to treat and prevent child abuse. The group was forced to shut down for a short time in 2008 following the financial crisis, but when they restarted, McGillicuddy wanted to do more than just raise funds. She wanted to change the foster care system as a whole, starting with individual children. “We have 1,500 children in foster care in this beautiful community of Sarasota, Manatee, and DeSoto counties,” she says. “and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.”

“ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS TO KEEP CHILDREN SAFE AND MAKE THEM FEEL NURTURED AND LOVED” —GRACI MCGILLICUDDY ASCF’s campus has a pediatric mental health treatment and research facility as well as six independently licensed foster homes. The campus also includes a clubhouse and a playground. ASFC helps children between the ages of 0-18 and their biological families. The goal is reunification with the parents when possible and permanent placement with a loving relative or a loving family for adoption when reunification is not possible. Foster parents are housed within the six large homes on the campus and those houses become the foster families’ homes. This is one of things that sets ASFC apart from normal residential facilities. There are no shift workers in these homes. Rather, the foster families rent the houses from the foundation and in return, receive evidence-based and trauma-informed services and support. Dr. Kristin Hoffman, ASCF’s Chief Program Officer, explains that resident families are expected to house up to five foster children at time. A key benefit of this setup is that they can take whole sibling groups and keep

families together. Each foster family agrees to stay in the home for two years, so they can offer stability to the children who live there for an extended time. ASCF focuses on helping children who are entering the foster care system for the first time. Once in the home, children receive “trauma-informed care.” This care centers on understanding the history and specific needs of each individual child to drive intervention. Research focuses on how to best implement proven treatment and counseling for each child. Hoffman said, “We are not creating brand new treatments for trauma. Instead, we’re trying to figure out how to package and deliver existing best practices in unique and innovative ways.” Foster parents are part of this as well. Every resident foster family agrees to be a part of the research and to the mission of ASCF, which is “to build brighter futures for children in foster care through innovation, science, and compassion.” Moreover, All Star clinicians help educate foster parents in the community using existing research and evidence-based curriculum as well.

All Star offers a 16-hour group Resource Parenting Curriculum that is taught over eight weeks. The foster parents learn that what worked with children they may have raised in the past is not necessarily going to work with kids in foster care who may have experienced complex trauma. The foster parents are educated in trauma-informed parenting and given the help and support they need to apply it in their home. ASCF has felt the effects of the pandemic this year. Foster care trainings had to be curtailed, and the organization still needs to recruit two new foster families for their program. They have recruited four of the six families needed to fill the homes. McGillicuddy says that one unanticipated effect of COVID is that they have been able to get greater participation from caregivers in children’s therapeutic services than usual. During normal times they might have had “no shows” in a given week, but by offering remote options for sessions they have noticed a rise in participation. McGillicuddy believes that it is tremendously important to engage the biological parents in their children’s services

and supports. “Chances are that they’re only doing to their children what was done to them,” she said. “And the only way we’re going to break the cycle is to treat all of the children that have been abused.” Now that they have found that they can do these counselings, therapies, and treatments remotely with greater success, they can continue to offer them remotely even after COVID is long gone. Since ASCF is an organization dedicated to changing the outcomes for children and families in the child welfare system and to helping the community understand some of the challenges these families face, they are open to collaboration with local communities. “All I wanted to do was to keep children safe and make them feel nurtured and loved,” says McGillicuddy. For her, the building of ASCF’s campus was the fruition of that dream. When they broke ground on their facility, it was November 15, her birthday—almost 35 years to the day since she read that life-altering article. The child’s story that changed this woman’s life is now changing the lives of others. McGillicuddy is adamant that anyone can make a difference in the life of a child. For those reasons, Tucci’s Big Night will always be my best and last supper when it comes to fulfilling my cinematic taste buds and savoring satisfying memories. Big Night is a film that’s aged well—like a fine wine over time. But there are others. Here’s my baker’s dozen of great food films that gave me great pleasure and satisfied my appetite at the movies.

Ratatouille (2007) A completely original animated film about a Parisian rat with a passion for great food. A delight in every way. One of the great films about cooking ever made, Ratatouille’s protagonist Remy has attitude and is obsessed with fine food. When he teams up with an awkward kitchen assistant, they—as the French say— ”cook with gas.” The great takeaway? Anyone can cook—if you’re passionate about what you’re cooking and put in hard work to make it art. This rat named Remy is forever ready for his close-up. Cheese!

Waitress (2007) A heartwarming story about a small-town waitress who creates incredible desserts. Kerri Russell as Jenna will steal your heart as she serves you coffee and dreams of escaping a bad marriage. The way out? Following her heart and baking her way to happiness. A tale that’s not half-baked but perfectly served—not too sweet or tart— like a good pie with lessons to boot. A whimsical film with profound lessons: even when you think you’re baked into a corner or bad situation, there’s a way out.

Chef (2014) Lighthearted. Passionate. A cooking odyssey that takes Jon Favreau from a 4-star restaurant to cooking on the road. Chef is a charming- tale of famous chef disillusioned by the restaurant business. Lacking the freedom to be all he can be in his kitchen, a road trip is the recipe that brings him and his son into a food truck, selling Cuban sandwiches and other regional dishes while bonding over the menu that comprises their lives. The food shines and Favreau’s real love for cooking shines through the most. A fun movie ride – and the best food you’ll ever be served out of a food truck.

Soul Food (1997) The dining room table at “Big Mama’s” house is where the food and stories are served. Soul food is a way to bring a family together around a table, overcoming souls who have been ripped apart due to tragedy or betrayal. Layered, comedic yet served with just a smidge of pathos, makes this a film that will stay with you—and make you feel good in your soul.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2012) A stunning documentary capturing one man’s absolute devotion to food. In each frame you’ll see the passion on display by famed sushi chef Jiro Ono, who was 85 years old when the movie was shot. A lifetime of dedication earned him the title of the greatest sushi chef alive and revolutionized this culinary art with new techniques. Even if you don’t love sushi – you’ll love this film about the man who is a master craftsman.

Babette’s Feast (1987) A film beyond being about food. It’s about how a great meal can bring people together to overcome anything. The meal in question, while nearly impossible to recreate, adds to the magic of Babette’s Feast. Here at the table past mistakes, beliefs, and grudges are forgotten as the incredible meal lifts everyone’s spirits. This is the first film from Denmark to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Tampopo (1985) A Japanese comedy, Tampopo tells the tale of two milkmen who help a struggling noodle house make a better ramen. Amusing. Original. A tip of its noodle to the spaghetti westerns of the 1960s, which greatly influenced this delightful light comedy.

Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) Master filmmaker Ang Lee’s simple yet sublime story of family dedicated to dining together. Once a week, a father and his three daughters in Taiwan get together to enjoy a wonderful meal. Masterfully crafted, the carefully orchestrated cooking sequences showcase signature dishes and cooking techniques. Yet in the end, Eat Drink Man Woman’s greatest lesson? Lunchbox (2014) Ritesh Batra’s film will leave many salivating for Indian food. The late Bollywood star Irffan Khan shines in this story that’s a little spicy, a little sweet, and a lot of fun. For those seeking a romantic drama with some zip, it’s the perfect treat to take in at home or in a lunchbox on the road.

Diner (1982) Barry Levinson’s masterpiece set in Baltimore shines when lifelong buddies meet at the local diner to discuss everything from who is the better crooner “Sinatra or Mathis” to what makes a perfect wife. Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, Steven Guttenberg, Paul Reiser, and Tim Daily shine in their passage to adulthood—where there’s always time to stop at the diner for one more cup of coffee.

Julie & Julia (2009) To say that Meryl Streep, a three-time Oscar winner and 20-time nominee, knows her way around the movie set is to state the obvious. It’s like saying Julia Child knows where the pots and pans are in her kitchen. In Julie and Julia, Streep uses the finest ingredients in her actor’s pantry to play the famous chef and cookbook writer Julia Child. Charming with a pinch of romance. Amy Adams as an enthusiastic devotee adds extra spice to this tribute to the joys of cooking. 72

Like Water for Chocolate (1992) A beautiful Mexican romance: the story of a young woman, Tita, whose food has power to affect whoever consumes it with her particular mood at the time. Passions rise as rose petals are added. A tale of forbidden love, class differences, and how magical recipes can keep two people close. Just as it’s hard to resist fine chocolate—viewers will find it hard to resist this rich feast.

Big Night (1996) Directorial debut of Stanley Tucci, who also stars with Tony Shalhoub as Italian brothers who open a restaurant in New Jersey. To boost their struggling business, they hatch the idea to bring musical star Louis Prima to the restaurant to promote the authentic and sublime food. The brothers pull out all stops, including baking an incredibly ambitious dish.. A film about the art of food, family and relationships. Homemade entertainment served in one generous helping over one memorable and big night.

We feel it is essential to celebrate life’s special moments, even if the celebration looks different than what our brides had originally envisioned. Brides should still have the gown of their dreams. Wedding photos will outlast the current environment, and you can celebrate the memory of wearing that most special dress that made you feel beautiful and confident. Each bride’s vision is as unique as the gown she selects. One popular trend in bridal fashion is crepe, which is a wonderful fabric as it is comfortable, yet still has structure. It hugs the bride’s curves in all the right places and still allows the bride to dance the night away feeling her best.

Event Planning I see 2021 as a year that many of my clients are steering away from tradition. This year is all about personalization, making the day unique, and anything but expected. I am seeing color … lots of it … and bold theatrical statements as one of the biggest trends. Couples are opting to ditch the traditional palettes. Instead, they are expressing their personal style by incorporating rich, bold colors in their design with their flowers and table linens. They also prefer a stylish and glamourous vibe. Designer gowns, crystal candelabrum, custom tuxes, crystal chandeliers, and elegant venues transformed with masses of colorful flowers. And in many areas … the bigger the better! The ‘wow factor’ is an important element this year not only in décor, but also in cakes, entertainment, and food. A recent bride requested a bold bridal bouquet that would trail on the floor. Her love of flowers continued to the reception where the trees were wrapped to match her bouquet. Crystal candelabrum, on the tabletops, complimented the crystal canopy that was draped over the 32foot head table.

Floral Design This season we’re definitely seeing a cleaner, more ethereal look for bouquets and centerpieces. Brides are choosing to focus more on key statement pieces and floral installations and keeping their table centerpieces more elegant and refined. For example, in February at Selby Gardens our bride wanted something to highlight the beauty of the gardens. For her ceremony décor, we wanted to complement the setting, so we chose to create a climbing floral installation directly on the tree. Using bursts of coral peonies, ranunculus, hellebores, garden roses, and pops of King Protea, we drew everyone’s attention to the ceremony tree without it looking forced or out of place.

Wedding Rings We are seeing brides today choosing larger diamonds and more understated or simpler mountings, and then pairing those with substantial eternity bands. One bride-to-be picked a beautiful round diamond solitaire with a “hidden halo”, which is also trending right now, and she chose a wedding band with a floating diamonds band. She said that the hidden halo reminded her of the support her future husband gives her to succeed behind the scenes, and the floating diamonds represent their everchanging love as they set sail across the ocean of life. We hear so many incredible romantic love stories, but this one left us speechless!

Fine Art Cakes 2021 is the year to start celebrating again! From micro cakes for weddings of 2-10 guests to a towering 7+ tier castle cake for a bride with fairytale dreams, this is the year of attention to detail. Fine art cakes are what’s in. or a favorite pattern. Forget the typical, traditional draping you used to see on a wedding cake. I’m talking about leafy layers and embroidery inspired by a Galia Lahav couture dress; ruffles from the latest Hayley Paige gown; and drapes, swags, petals and leaves made with the thinnest pieces of gum paste to mimic the sheerness of silk and tulle. This year I’ve started to add lighting elements and it really brings another dimension to the design. I recently made a 6-foot tall castle cake for a bride, and this cake had it all! Seven tiers of architectural details in white and gold, including a petal-shaped tier with floral swags, an arched tier with hand painted gold cherub cameos (lit up with tiny little lights), a double-height tier with dual cascading stairways, and topped by a fairytale castle floating in sugar flower clouds.

The pair flew to Denver with two layers of masks, face shields, and as much hand sanitizer as allowed on the plane. Then they headed to a cabin in Evergreen, Colorado. That evening, Kelly assembled a bouquet of flowers from the local grocery store. The next morning, she awoke to find deer in the front yard and a light snow falling. After FaceTiming with family and friends, the pair drove out to Sapphire Point. “When I bought my wedding dress, I still had the idea that we were going to get married in the springtime,” says Kelly. “My dress was not ideal for the 3 feet of snow and icy mountain terrain!” With an assist from the photographer, layers of skintoned thermals, and hidden handwarmers amid the 20 degree weather, Kelly still managed to surprise Andrew by appearing in her wedding dress against a gorgeous backdrop of snowy Evergreens. “I will forever remember this moment, walking up to him when it finally clicked that this moment was finally here after the long year,” says Kelly. “It was one of the most jaw dropping moments of beauty, being between 88

GET CREDENTIALED—FAST!—AT STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA, MANATEE-SARASOTA Employers in our community need workers—right now! And State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is addressing this need through a rapid credentialing opportunity called “Get Credentialed. Get Noticed!” that helps unemployed and underemployed people find new careers or advance in existing ones. This new initiative—which is part of a Florida Department of Education statewide workforce campaign—delivers vital education ranging from one-day programs all the way through two-year degrees. Terri Clark, dean of Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development, says, “We want employers to think of us first when they need skill training or retraining for their employees. We already have the content experts here, and we’re teaching the students of today who are their workers of tomorrow.”

Laptop Distribution Day

SCF has a long history of finding community partners, and that’s the case with “Get Credentialed. Get Noticed!” Florida Power and Light (FPL), for example, is helping out. Because the pandemic has forced so much education online, having quality laptops is a must, and FPL is providing free laptops for those who need it.

One success story is Kate Kinney, who already earned a two-year Associate in Arts degree from SCF and is well on her way to a Bachelor of Applied Science in the Public Safety and Emergency Management program with a focus in Administration. Through SCF programs, she’s also already obtained her insurance adjuster license and attended trainings on community response and leadership.

There’s also scholarship money available to ensure people who are interested in the rapid credentialing initiative have the opportunity to complete it. SCF brings additional support, too, via Jennifer Boris, their Workforce Education Outreach Specialist. The program also offers a one-stop career-finding resource through a partnership with Career Source Suncoast. They meet with students to ensure they know about relevant job openings within our community, then guide them through applying for the job, which includes helping with resume and interview skills.

Once Kinney learned about the rapid credentialing initiative, she knew it was a great fit and is now earning a Business Specialist certificate. Best of all, SCF provided her with both a scholarship and a laptop. “This means everything to me,” she says about that generosity. “I work full time to support myself and my mother who became permanently disabled about two years ago. A scholarship means I’m able to afford books and other things when previously I would’ve had to make a choice between getting them and making sure I had enough money for other essentials.”

“What we offer is truly what I like to call wraparound services,” says Clark. “It represents the commitment of SCF and our external partners to empower our students with the credentials they need to create a career pathway for themselves and their family though self-sustaining jobs.”

Prior to receiving the new laptop provided by FPL, Kinney was using a six-year-old laptop that struggled to load programs. Having an up-to-date machine makes all the difference in helping her get classwork done and keeping her career plans on track. APRIL 2021 | SARASOTA SCENE

Homeland Security certificate Program

The “Get Credentialed. Get Noticed!” initiative runs through the end of summer 2021, and there’s a chance it might be funded beyond that. Clark recommends that people with any interest in the certificates and degrees available through this initiative—which range from digital publishing to homeland security specialist, business entrepreneurship to database administrator, and network infrastructure to preschool teacher specialization—should check out the specifics today.

Another rapid-credentialing student who received a laptop was so overcome that she broke into tears—she was sharing a laptop with her child who needed it for their own distance learning. Once this mom received her own laptop from FPL, it freed her to do her schoolwork when she needed to versus waiting until the child went to bed. For her, a free laptop was a technological—and career—lifeline. “I’m fairly new to the industry I work in and it’s my first corporate job,” Kinney admits. “I don’t have a ton of experience with businesses and the operations behind them, so the rapid credentialing program has made gaining valuable insight very easy. By obtaining additional certificates, I can potentially move up within the organization or expand out into the community to find next-level jobs.” That’s the outcome Clark and SCF want. “We listen to the needs of industry,” Clark says. “We try to make sure that we have training or programs that align to those needs so that we’re properly educating the students. It’s all about career readiness—we want them to be truly ready to find a job and then be successful at keeping it.”

People often say, “Oh, I don’t have time to do this. I can’t make that kind of long-term educational investment.” But Clark points out that a certificate program could be a mere 12 months, or less. And she adds that “They also might think the modality would be instructor-led in the classroom, 8 am to noon, three days a week. While that might be one delivery option, SCF also has courses that are completely online, as well as hybrid models.” For those who have more challenging schedules or needs, SCF is open to working with them to truly customize delivery options to meet the needs of the individual. Kinney echoes this, saying that “SCF and their faculty have been endlessly accommodating, flexible, and helpful. The professors, the financial aid staff, and the program directors are always available and quick to respond. They make education easy, accessible, and affordable.” One of the main goals of SCF president Dr. Probstfeld is to be a workforce driver within our area. With the efforts of SCF’s Workforce division being so well supported by “Get Credentialed. Get Noticed!”, they’re on their way to doing exactly that.

InHEALTH SHOULD I HAVE MY HERNIA REPAIRED? By Jonathan Yunis, MD, FACS

WHAT IS A HERNIA? A hernia is a defect or hole in the muscular abdominal wall that allows internal organs or fat to pass through it toward the overlying skin. The most common hernias occur in the groin (inguinal and femoral hernia) and in the belly button (umbilical hernia). Others (ventral incisional hernias) occur in areas of previous surgical incisions in the abdominal wall.

Incarceration of a hernia is when the intestine is trapped in the hernia defect. This can result in obstruction of the intestine causing abdominal pain and vomiting. After a hernia incarcerates, it can strangle the intestine contained within the hernia. This compromises the blood flow to the intestine and if surgery is not performed to relieve this, overwhelming sepsis and even death is a possibility.

When a hernia occurs, one may notice a protrusion or bulge under the skin of the abdomen. The swelling or bulge can be painless, uncomfortable, or very painful. In some cases, the obvious bulge develops slowly over time.

HOW CAN I GET THE BEST OUTCOME FOR HERNIA REPAIR? Seek treatment by an experienced hernia specialist whose practice is solely dedicated to hernia repair. If you have a hernia, you have options. Surgical options include conventional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic surgery. Most repairs utilize mesh in order to reduce the risk of hernia recurrence. Some repairs can be performed without the use of mesh. There are many different types of mesh and it is generally safe when implanted by an experienced surgeon.

WHO GETS A HERNIA? Most hernias occur because of a genetic predisposition. Repetitive heavy lifting or other forms of exertion are likely to cause the hernia to occur earlier in your life. Ventral hernias from an abdominal surgical incision will occur in 20% of all abdominal operations. The risk for ventral incisional hernia development Is Increased by smoking, diabetes, obesity, and surgical wound infections. WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER HERNIA REPAIR? While most hernias are painless, if your hernia is causing intermittent discomfort or pain, then surgical repair is the solution to eradicate these symptoms. Hernias are often disfiguring and an experienced hernia specialist often offers an enhanced cosmetic outcome. While many hernias can remain unchanged over time, most hernias tend to get larger. Hernia enlargement over time can lead to a much bigger operation with a more difficult recovery. Smaller hernias are often amenable to outpatient surgery and with recovery that usually will not require prescription pain medicine. In some cases, hernia repair is necessary to prevent a medical emergency known as incarceration or strangulation. 94

If you choose hernia repair, the risk should be significantly lower than the risk of leaving it untreated. While this seems obvious, historically 1 in 4 people who undergo hernia surgery are unhappy due to problems with chronic pain, infection, or recurrence. These complications are clearly avoidable. All hernias and the people that develop them are unique. There is no standard approach to hernia repair. Careful analysis of each person’s lifestyle and needs along with the location and size of the hernia are necessary to formulate a proper solution. The buzz over deep plane facelifts is growing louder due to a Real Housewife of NYC recently having one: What makes it special? To understand this, we must first understand the architecture of the face. Anatomically, the face consists of a bony skeleton that provides structure to soft tissues made up of deep fat, fascia, and superficial skin penetrated by supporting cutaneous ligaments. Aging is the disharmonious descent of the soft tissue elements relative to their ligamentous anchors. For example, the deep fat, which provides volume in the face, descends and settles in the lower cheek and jowl area. This shift hollows out the upper cheek and lower eyelid area and changes the shape of the face, leading to a heavy lower face and a gaunt upper face. Because aging is a multidimensional problem involving volume shift, loose fascia, and sagging skin, a simple solution is unlikely to correct it. The most common fixes offered today are the nonsurgical facelift, the mini-lift, the traditional facelift, and the comprehensive deep plane facelift. Typically, nonsurgical solutions fill the upper facial voids with volume. If this is done judiciously or on the young who have limited facial descent, the illusion helps. Unfortunately, this approach retains the lower heaviness while adding upper heaviness to match, and can result in a cherub-like, distorted appearance. The mini-lift, another unidimensional approach, fails miserably because it just stretches the skin and leaves the bulk of aging untouched, creating a wind-swept appearance. The traditional facelift addresses the neck and jowl, however fails to reposition the mid facial volume. Some doctors remedy this with fat injection to hide the volume descent. I used to perform this facelift myself, but I was frustrated with the limitations of the results.

My philosophy now is to tackle the problem at the source with a very rare comprehensive deep plane facelift. In this approach, we release the anchors and reposition facial volume globally in a vertical lift. When the fascia is repositioned in the traditional facelift it is limited by the anchors. The deep plane not only improves the fascial repositioning by releasing the anchors, it adds the dimension of volume repositioning by moving the fat pads. This addresses the root cause by repositioning all elements of soft tissue that descended with age. To the best of our ability, this restores the natural harmonious proportions of the youthful face, without the limitation of the other techniques. In essence, patients actually look decades younger and yet natural, with soft fullness in the upper face and less heaviness in the lower face. This is simply because we are moving more of the facial structures and volume back to their original locations and not compensating by overfilling or overly stretching the skin. I invite you to look at the results yourself and you will notice that they require no explanation or qualifications; they just look right. Many of my patients report that their family and friends did not realize they had a facelift, only that they look fabulous! The state of the art is not how easily, quickly, or cheaply a problem can be fixed. Rather it is a methodical, measured, artistically crafted, comprehensive technique that creates natural youthful beauty. The deep plane facelift is performed in the operating room with an anesthesiologist and light anesthesia just like the other facelifts with similar recovery, yet the results are dramatically different. InHEALTH THRIVING DURING STRESSFUL TIMES By Nancy E Dring, EdD, LMHC, CHT, CBN IS ALL STRESS BAD? Stress is often viewed as negative; but not all stress is bad. In the short term, stress can be beneficial when it propels us into positive action or stimulates a physical response that helps us to perform better. However, long-term stress and acute stress can have detrimental effects on us mentally, emotionally, and physically. Prolonged stress can contribute to the increased use of substances, compromise the body’s immune system, create relationship conflicts, or worsen chronic health problems or mental health conditions. HOW CAN I TELL IF STRESS IS BECOMING A PROBLEM? Warning signs may include feeling out of control or helpless, excessive worry, and low interest or motivation. Some people experience changes in appetite, such as compulsive eating, along with sadness, anger, frustration, or irritability. Others have difficulty sleeping and concentrating, or experience increased physical fatigue or discomfort such as headaches, body aches, and pains. DO YOU RECOMMEND ANY SELF-HELP STRATEGIES? Yes. Get plenty of sleep, participate in regular physical activity, spend time out of doors, and eat healthy food. Also, avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, limit screen time, and maintain a regular schedule and routine. It helps to limit news exposure and stay busy with distractions such as hobbies or organizations. Additionally, focus on positive thoughts, set goals and priorities, and make connections spiritually and personally, while considering recommended restrictions. WHAT RESEARCH-BASED STRATEGIES ARE BENEFICIAL FOR ACUTE ANXIETY AND OTHER MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS? Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps individuals to recognize and challenge beliefs that are negatively influencing behaviors and feelings.This in turn can influence thoughts, reactions, behavior, attitude, and physical responses.

A CBT therapist helps the patient to see a situation more clearly and therefore react to it in a more positive way to reduce emotional distress and psychologic symptoms. CBT can also include breathing retraining, progressive muscle relaxation, and other techniques. Exercise, yoga, and meditation are also supported by research. Exercise therapy, specifically resistance exercise/strength training, evokes repeated muscle action against resistance. Yoga, an ancient mind/body practice involves different techniques in physical postures, controlled breathing, and deep relaxation. Meditation also involves a variety of techniques for calming and quieting the mind. It is also important to seek professional assistance when we are on stress overload or our mental health is compromised. HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP? Many people do not recognize when they are struggling or do not have the skills to remedy a stressful life. Recognizing when we are experiencing more than a “typical” amount of stress and need support is critical. To begin, do frequent check-ins with yourself while asking important questions. Are you finding day-to-day life overwhelming? Are you experiencing a consistent low mood or anxiety? Is your emotional state affecting your personal life, your professional work and productiveness, health, or mental well-being? Are your usual selfcare strategies working? We need strategies to strengthen our inner resources and boost our inner reserve, move us into a positive mind frame, and reinforce our resilience for today’s crises and future ones. Meet Artist

NICK DAHILL Sarasota-based artist Nick Dahill is originally from Long Island, New York. After studying a blend of video game art and fine art at Ringling College of Art and Design, he decided to stay in the beachside city and make furniture at Wood Street Studio. In 2019, Dahill was awarded a fellowship by the Halo Arts Project. Dahill’s work is often labeled “Pop Surrealism” and incorporates imagery inspired by the artist’s childhood experiences with digital media such as cartoons and video games. He then combines that imagery with the intuitive world of abstraction and landscape painting to create his loud, gregarious, and surreal style. Dahill may be best known for his “Dream Large” mural on the Boulevard of the Arts in Sarasota. Previously, his multimedia art show “All My Friends” brought together local artists and viewers for a one-night special showing of film, painting, and sculpture. In addition to these community focused projects, Dahill has a vast canon of original animations, paintings, and illustrations.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: A TRIO OF SPECULATIVE FICTION NOVELS

HUMMINGBIRD SALAMANDER BY JEFF VANDERMEER

Jeff VanderMeer’s latest novel starts with the type of hook all readers want—excitement + mystery. Assume I’m dead by the time you read this. Assume you’re being told all of this by a flicker, a wisp, a thing you can’t quite get out of your head now that you’ve found me. And in the beginning, it’s you, not me, being handed an envelope with a key inside…on a street, on a winter day so cold that breathing hurts and your lungs creak. One of the things VanderMeer does well in general is showcase his love for nature, and here in Hummingbird Salamander, that’s the case, as well. Our

protagonist is Jane Smith, a security consultant who risks a lot to embark on a quest that feels at times like a wild goose chase. But that’s just VanderMeer keeping you in the dark for as long as he can, teasing out the mysteries until the near-breaking point. Did I mention that Jane promised to tell readers how the world ends? If you’re into eco-thrillers and a triple helping of weird, this is your book. VanderMeer’s a fine writer with serious worldbuilding skills, as he proves once again with Hummingbird Salamander.

Nick Martell’s latest—book 2 in The Legacy of the Mercenary Kings series— is a BIG book (592 pages), so that’s George R.R. Martin territory. But readers will be rewarded with a rich fantasy world that reminds me a little of the imaginative environments created by Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson. There’s a “Story so Far” intro to get you up to speed, if you’re worried about dropping into a series and being lost. But make no mistake, this book works quite well as a standalone. It might even be better that way, in fact, since Martell likes uncertainty of both narrative and character, so not reading book 1 (The Kingdom of Liars) keeps the fog of war much thicker throughout. Others might disagree, however. The Two-Faced Queen continues the story of Michael Kingsman, who’s a mercenary for the mysterious figure called Dark. While the two of them

arts&culture work to solve murders committed by an assassin who people thought was long-gone, Michael also seeks to restore his family’s lost honor. Let’s be clear—it’s pretty hard to get much done when your reputation is so in the sewers that no one wants to trust you. Of particular interest to me are the fight scenes—Martell likes things fast, raw, and bloody. Keep an eye on the Trey and Naomi storylines, too, which are quite satisfying. Martell’s doing a fine job of weaving some interesting threads to keep us moving through the pages. Similar to book 1 in this series, the

second half of this novel really finds its lane and picks up serious narrative momentum. Ultimately, Martell has delivered a solid sequel here that sets the way for a lot of tumultuousness in future books. And he warns that Michael is a tragic figure, so keep that in mind when taking the plunge into this series that’s just getting underway.

ODIN’S CHILD

BY SIRI PETTERSEN

The first book in a YA epic fantasy trilogy, Odin’s Child, features Hirka, a resourceful female protagonist who learns at age 15 that she’s the child of Odin. But she’s despised and hunted because unlike the others, she doesn’t have a tail. And she’s the only one who can access the Might. Yes, the Might is essentially magic, but you won’t find that word here. And you won’t find a lot of other standard fantasy conventions in these pages, either. Pettersen skips the dragons, magic weapons, and prophecies as well. This reader thanks her for that! Now, the frequent internal monologues might be a bit much for some readers, as could be the circular storytelling more common to European novels than American ones. But there’s a dry humor I appreciate, and a sense of deep worldbuilding that’s well suited for the morally gray characters (there are quite a few!). Still, this is a big book (519 pages!) and it takes a bit to get rolling along.

So, if you’re yearning for a differently flavored fantasy, this might do the trick. Its original release in Norway in 2013—the home country of the author—did amazingly well. Perhaps after reading it you’ll join Pettersen’s legions of fans, too.

’m not supposed to say anything about this, but you’ll keep it hush-hush, right? Because we’re Sarasota Scene buddies and all?

Fantastic. With that pinkie-swearing promise of silence, I’ll dish. It’s official. As of this month, I’m a millionaire. It’s #8 of the “Twelf Live Golz” that six-year-old Ryan wrote on the wall of his closet with a purple crayon, and, to be honest, I’m a little surprised I got here so soon! From my litany of college majors (undeclared, music, music performance, philosophy, English, etc.), I wasn’t exactly chasing the Almighty Dollar in the most strategic or efficient way possible. So, imagine my surprise when the money magic finally happened! I mean, I just opened up Gmail and BOOM! there it was—a note from Mr. L.X. Hemsfelder, Esq., saying “Congrarulations. Youre email account has won you £5,800,000 from the National Lottery UK.” I have no idea how much money that is in American buckeroonies, but with that many zeros, one has to assume it’s like lots of millions, right? And to think—I don’t recall ever purchasing a lottery ticket from the National Lottery UK. I haven’t even been to Europe since 1994! Here’s the really surprising part, though. I won the National Lottery UK not once, not twice, but THREE MORE TIMES this week. I have all four emails proving

it. Now, they’re not all from Mr. Hemsfelder, but one assumes that with that much money being dealt with, he has colleagues and minions to help get all that prize cash to where it rightly belongs. All I need to do is “reply to this email for more detale and clame” and supply them with “mild” banking information. So, I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to do with all that cashola. I suspect the first things that came to my mind are the same ones that come to yours, too. 1. Hire 80s super-band The Scorpions to follow me everywhere I go and kick into my theme song, “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” upon demand. 2. Order a custom suit of 24k gold chainmail armor for Harvey, my guinea pig. (He’s a very enthusiastic D&D player.) 3.Host a 24-vehicle ATV demolition derby in my backyard. (Self-explanatory.) 4. Purchase a jet-powered hovercraft. (In case I ever want to take up golf again. Or in case I want to give those early-morningchattering squirrels in my backyard a little payback.) 5. Get a pink Chanel No. 5 fire extinguisher for my pantry. (Just because.) 6. Purchase lunch with Warren Buffet via an eBay auction. (He does this 1x/ year, and in 2020, it went for $2.6 million.) 7. Buy my parents a sizable gift card for the Glace Luxury Ice Company, a California-based company that produces hand-carved, zero-taste ice designed for minimum dilution and maximum cooling. Most people will never need a guardian. If you plan well, talk to family about your wishes, and prepare legal documents to designate someone to take care of your affairs when you are no longer able, a guardian would generally not be necessary. Unfortunately, unexpected events can occur, and not everyone plans well.

LSF Guardianship program focuses on three areas:

Protection - stepping in to protect the individual from potential abuse neglect or exploitation by completing an initial assessment to determine care needs and protect the person, property and assets

Coordination - promptly applying for benefits, coordinating services, overseeing card plans, medical appointments and any necessary treatment plans. All efforts are made to adhere to the ward’s wishes and support the least restrictive safe environment.

Advocacy - Educate the ward, their family and the community about guardianship and the alternatives. This includes facilitating the Family Guardianship Course in partnership with SCF twice a year, and providing community education to individuals and groups.
