Building Bridges within the Community Education in Sarasota extends beyond the classroom, permeating every aspect of community life. Collaborative efforts between schools, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations have created a dynamic ecosystem where learning knows no bounds.

Celebrating 20 years of conservation, Conservation Foundation of Gulf Coast’s Board Chair Rob Brown, and Board Member and Land Protection Committee Chair Pat Carlton, share why conserving land in Florida’s unique environment is so important. We are so blessed to have this impactful and vital organization working for the good of all.

Our Around Town feature is a conversation with the inspirational leader and champion of victims of domestic and sexual abuse—Jessica Hays, President and CEO of SPARCC. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Jessica answers questions about what the agency provides to the community as well as educating us on what goes on in our town. She gives us some insight into her personal views and some of the other organizations she supports.

Sarasota Art Museum highlights contemporary artists in a new exhibition. The latest exhibition is the first major collaboration between SAM and the Hermitage Artist Retreat. They highlight 10 extraordinary visual artists to capture the rich environment of the Retreat.

Our Education Matters article talks about fostering future visual artists through innovative partnerships. The Creative Empowerment Project’s collaboration with Booker High School and the help of Charities for Children is revolutionizing the approach to educating young individuals in film production and digital arts.

The 30 Day Rule For Saving Money

Figuring out how much you should save a month and the best method for you to save money can be a tricky business. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all method that will work for everyone. Several common methods are available to follow, so it can be overwhelming to determine the best place to start. But, if you find yourself overspending, consistently going over budget or not saving as much money as you’d like due to impulse purchases, you may want to consider giving the 30-day savings rule for saving money a try.

What Is the 30 Day Savings Rule?

To determine whether this method is right for you, it’s important to understand exactly what it is. The concept of the rule is simple: If you find yourself wanting to make an impulse purchase, you, instead, place that amount of money into your savings account and wait a 30-day period. If you still want to make that purchase at the end of the 30 days, you can go ahead and do so. But, if you end up deciding that purchase is not needed, now you have that money stashed away in your savings!

Every day it seems like advertisements plague us, whether in person, on television, or our smartphones, sometimes in extremely subtle ways. A 2021 poll facilitated by OnePoll showed that the average American makes 12 impulse purchases totaling about $276 each month; that is over $3,000 per year spent on impulse buys that individuals may not need instead of putting that money away toward future goals. The goal of the 30-day savings rule is to help mitigate some of those purchases, grow your savings, and help create healthier, long-term financial habits.

How to Use the 30 Day Savings Rule

Identify Wants vs. Needs

The first step in implementing this rule is figuring out what your needs and wants are. Needs typically fall under the categories of living expenses (rent, groceries, insurance, utilities, etc.), items that will affect your health (prescriptions, health insurance, medical appointments, etc.), and things necessary for employment. Alternatively, wants are the items you can live without, and they will ultimately not affect your livelihood (morning coffee, eating out, excessive clothing purchases, etc.).

Take a look at the monthly purchases you’ve made and determine which category each one falls under. Once you’ve identified your usual purchases and what they qualify as, it will be easier to determine what type of purchase you’re making during the 30 days. Is it a need, or is it impulsive?

Have a Dedicated Savings Account

You’ll need a place to put your funds, so you must open up a savings account if you don’t already have one. Oftentimes a savings account is included in a checking account opening, meaning you may already have one! Check with your financial institution to see if there is already one under your account if you’re unsure of your options for opening up a new one.

The benefit of using a savings account connected to your checking account is that you can easily transfer funds over when you feel the itch for an impulse buy. However, this is also the downfall; if it’s easy to transfer from your checking to your savings, it’s also easy to transfer funds back.

If you feel like this may be an issue, and you would be too tempted to transfer it back to make an impulse buy, set up another blockade for yourself by opening up a dedicated savings account at a different bank that offers electronic transfers from bank to bank. That way, it takes several steps to get the funds back to your checking!

Create a Fun Budget

Just because you’re trying to increase your savings for a 30-day period, it doesn’t mean you need to cut out fun altogether. Set up a designated fun budget based on some of your wants. It’s important, however, to stick to this budget each month and not impulsively go over. This way, you can still enjoy activities and save without restricting yourself too much.

For example, the Monorail app has a dedicated spot just for your Wishlist Fund. Add all the items you’d love to buy, prioritize, and add money to your Wishlist Fund. This way you have a dedicated spending account to make sure you’re really buying those items that will add value to your life.

Record Impulse Purchases in One Place

Pick a spot and record all of your almost-impulse buys there. It could be your Notes app, a post-it note, or a list on your fridge. There are a few benefits to this; first, you’ll be able to establish good habits and figure out what you typically want to impulse buy. Next, you won’t need to look through your search history to determine what you wanted to buy on that one day a few weeks ago. Lastly, it’ll help you identify what items are essential to you from that list. And maybe you record those things in your Monorail Wishlist. This could be a great way to visualize what items are most attractive to you.

Over the past 17 years, golf clubs nationwide have formed impactful partnerships with Folds of Honor, contributing to the transformative work of providing educational opportunities for the families of our brave military and first responders. SARASOTA OPERA LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR OPENING NIGHT

Opera fans celebrated the tradition of donning kilts to the second opening night of the Sarasota Opera season. Based on Sir Walter Scott’s The Bride of Lammermoor, deceit leads to murder and madness in Lucia di Lammermoor. The ensuing drama is excitingly captured in Donizetti’s beautifully romantic music, with many well-known operatic highlights including Lucia’s famous mad scene.

State College of Florida Foundation hosted over 230 guests on its Bradenton campus for the annual “Avenues to the Future” fundraising event. This year’s “Bourbon, Brews & BBQ” theme showcased bourbons, craft beers, and succulent barbecued chicken and ribs from Pier 22 and 99 Bottles. The featured student speaker was SCF Music major Kevin Aguirre, who shared with the audience how important SCF has been to his education and his entire family’s future. The event netted the SCF Foundation over $90,000. When it comes to this community, our love and caring for those less fortunate manifests in beautiful ways, especially when organizations get together in support of each other. While this fashion fundraiser took place six months ago, we believe it is never too late to share a feel-good story of those who were down on their luck and who are now on a positive path.

Sarasota Bay Club, the beautiful retirement living community, hosted this heartwarming fashion fundraiser benefiting the local nonprofit, Second Heart Homes. The models included several formerly homeless clients from Second Heart Homes as well as Sarasota Bay Club residents showcasing outfits provided by The Exchange, the fabulous local nonprofit consignment store. According to Joan McGarry, Lifestyle Director at Sarasota Bay Club, Second Heart Home models “stood taller, exuded confidence, and radiated joy as they relished their moment in the spotlight and the sound of applause, just for them.”

Local volunteers who helped make this event successful were Lathrop Ford, stylist and photographer Eneida Hatch, as well as professional hair and make-up artists including Coraline Blue, owner of Painted Lady Salon and professional make-up artist Lera Juno. make-up artist Lera Juno.

Second Heart Homes helps to revive the dignity of the homeless and mental health community through housing and support. The Weiller Legacy

Transforming Lives at Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and Desoto Counties

At Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, the Weiller family name is everywhere you turn.

There’s a Weiller park, a Weiller playground, and there’s the Babe Weiller hallway that goes all the way through the middle part of the building.

In 2021, Sarasota philanthropist Jean Weiller made a transformational $1 million gift to the Club. She says the connection to BGCSDC started with her mother-in-law, Kathryn “Babe” Weiller in the 1970’s.

“She went around to all her friends, my mother-in-law, and said, ‘You know, you must have books in your house that your kids have grown out of, and we could use them to start a library at the Boys &Girls Club,’” She said. “And that’s how it started.”

It didn’t take much. Jean was hooked.

“I found right away that the people were very happy people,” Weiller said. “We just sort of got into it and got involved in it, and we liked the kids. I had one little girl who thought she was my child. We still have a friendship,” Weiller said, referring to Ghita, who is now a high school senior applying to college. Her two sisters are and were Club members, too.

It’s easy to tell from her kind heart that Weiller comes from humble beginnings. She was raised in an underserved neighborhood, and art became her outlet.

“I was just a kid growing up on the wrong side of the track and enjoyed all the things that I could get from art,” Weiller said. “I didn’t think of myself as an artist.”

She may not have thought so, but she’s never been one to brag. Together with her late husband, Edwin “Ted” Weller, they and a business partner created Weilwood Industries, a textile converting business based in Manhattan from 1960-1990.

“I was the textile designer,” Weiller said.

And she traveled all over the world doing what she loved.

“I never was the kind of person that got out of bed and said, ‘Ugh, I have to go to work,’” she said. “I was always happy to go.”

When asked how many women were in her college class at the time, her answer was short.

“Me,” she said, with a laugh.

“I’ve never been around so many kids that are so polite and so appreciative, and they always have a smile on their face.”

She was inspired by her love for art and her own extensive art collection to start volunteering in the Club’s art program.

“That was the part that I concentrated on. We did paintings that weren’t so difficult for the kids to do,” Weiller said. “I remember one year it was Valentine’s Day, so I told every kid they could make a valentine for their mother and their grandmother. So, each one would get two valentines to fill in. So, I got around to this little boy, and he said to me, ‘I need 14.’ I said, ‘Why do you need 14?’ He said, ‘Well, I have a lot of women in my family.’ Luckily we found the 14 cards. And from there on, I knew that he was the kid that was going to need more than anyone else.”

She says she had a big drawer full of candy, and the kids got a piece every time they did something good, which she says was often.

Weiller also has spent time with the kids at the Club’s monthly dinner series, Opening Doors to Great Futures, where the kids get to work with a guest chef.

“I’ve never been around so many kids that are so polite and so appreciative, and they always have a smile on their face,” Weiller said.

Inspired by her own extensive art collection, Weiller would find a project she wanted to do with the kids, plan it out and get supplies.

“I bought it all myself. I didn’t ask for money,” Weiller said. “I would try to figure out something, a purpose that the kids could do. I found it to be quite the pleasure. “

I asked her why she thinks art is so important for these kids.

“Because I think it comes directly from them,” she said.

She says she’s always enjoyed seeing the sense of pride from a child with his or her finished art.

“It made you feel good. They would be so proud of what they did,” Weiller said. She even judged the Club’s art competitions, which she says required a lot of patience.

“They mostly taught me to be a little more understanding because I seem to have a quick temper. Excuse me. I do have a quick temper,” Weiller joked.

She gave immeasurably with her time. And her monetary donations have completely changed the trajectory of the Club.

In 2016, Weiller was honored at the signature gala as a “Champion for Children” of Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties. It’s an award presented to those whose leadership and philanthropy have enhanced and saved the lives of Club members. That same year, Weiller

and her family committed to giving the organization a $500,000 match if BGCSDC could raise $1 million in new or increased funds by 2020. They met their goal, and $1 million of that “Matching Challenge” gift was put toward the Club’s endowment fund. $500,000 was used to support operations and new initiatives like the Teen Program and Tom and Debbie Shapiro Career Resource Center.

The giving didn’t end there. Through the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Weiller’s $1 million donation in 2021 is now being put toward building and furnishing a new Art Studio and Technology & Robotics Lab at the Roy McBean Club on the Irving and Marilyn Naiditch Campus, and has already renovated the Lee Wetherington Club’s Art Room as well as the renovation and expansion of the Club’s Administrative Building.

This transformational gift will lead to increased impact and capacity from BGCSDC with the creation of stateof-the-art learning spaces for Club members and capacity-building space for staff.

In her time as a donor and volunteer at the Club, Weiller has impacted thousands of young lives.

It’s clear after spending an hour with Jean that she prefers to stay in the background. She’s certainly not motivated by the recognition.

“It’s nice to see your name on the wall,” she said, “but it’s really good to be with an 8-year-old when you’re almost 300 years old.”

As President and CEO of Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC), she has successfully led the only state certified center that provides vital services to victims in Sarasota and DeSoto counties. SPARCC serves as a haven to promote empowerment, awareness, and social change to end domestic and sexual violence.

She works tirelessly to inspire others to be the best they can be and strives to help others realize their potential and value, while learning to love and respect themselves—all powerful ways to enable their path forward and help form a better community.

Jessica graciously agreed to answer our questions about this sensitive topic and tell us what we need to know and ways we can help.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and our town is not immune from violence or sexual assault. Please educate us on our local stats on sexual assault and please tell us how SPARCC helps raise visibility about domestic and sexual violence within Sarasota and DeSoto counties.Sexual assault is far more prevalent than most realize, partly due to the fact that is often goes un-reported with as few as 20% estimated to be reported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Statistics from the CDC also state that approximately 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of sexual violence in their lifetime.

SPARCC works to address this issue through a variety of programs and services that focus on both intervention, helping those who are in crisis or those who have

experienced the trauma of abuse, and also through prevention strategies to create awareness that will lead to social change.

Unfortunately, sexual violence is quite prevalent, and it impacts many people in the community on different levels. What practical things can you tell us on how we can become agents of change to help others recognize and prevent sexual assault? While it’s disheartening to acknowledge the prevalence of sexual violence, change often begins at the community level. There are practical things we can all do to create a safer and more supportive environment. It starts with supporting survivors. Once someone comes to SPARCC for help, what can they expect? When someone comes to SPARCC, they can expect a supportive and confidential environment where trained professionals are available to assist them through the healing process. Our services are tailored to meet the individual needs and choices of survivors. SPARCC’s advocates and attorneys are committed to providing compassionate, survivor-centered care and empowering individuals on their journey toward healing. They can also expect to encounter our caring, compassionate team. The staff at SPARCC are my heroes, they come to this work with their whole hearts and I think it shows in the work they do and how they interact with our survivors and supporters.

What are some other local agencies or organizations that are important partners to the services provided by SPARCC? We are so fortunate to have many incredible partners. With it being sexual assault awareness month, I will focus on those we partner closely with through the Sexual Assault Response Team. This team brings together professionals from various fields to enhance the

coordinated response to sexual assault cases, provides comprehensive support to survivors and works towards the prevention of sexual violence. Key partners include law enforcement, the State Attorney’s Office, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, The Child Protection Center, and other community based agencies.

Fundraisers are a great way to engage the community, introduce new people to SPARCC, and raise awareness for its mission. Please tell our readers about your important fundraisers. SPARCC has several fundraisers throughout the year, we are fortunate to have wonderful supporters who continue to build support for our mission. Our large fundraising events consist of an annual Gala (save the date, this year’s gala will be held on November 16 at Selby Gardens and is always a sold-out event) and a Fashion Show in March, which is planned by the SPARCC Auxiliary. Additionally, the Auxiliary hosts two annual golf tournaments, in January and April. These events are crucial in raising funds that support SPARCC’s free and confidential services.

What are some other local organizations that hold a special place in your heart? The Junior League of Sarasota will always be special to me, because it’s where I first got involved with the community on a greater scale and where I first became acquainted with SPARCC. The Junior League is where I met my mentor and SPARCC’s former CEO, Olivia Thomas. Her mentorship and the experience I gained while serving as the President of Junior League in 2013 ultimately helped prepare me the role I have today. Additionally, my daughters and I are members of a fairly new organization here in Sarasota called National Charity League. This has been special to me because it allows me to spend time with my daughters, while also volunteering with many of our local nonprofits. Voluntarism is a core value for me and its fun to share it with people I love.

When you are not at SPARCC, what are some other things Jessica Hays likes to do? With such heavy topics surrounding me all of the time at work, spending time with the people I love (friends and family) is both grounding and re-energizing. I also love traveling, reading, enjoying the sunshine. My husband and I have two teenage daughter and we spend time with them whenever we have the opportunity.

The State College of Florida Foundation (SCFF) was founded in 1978 by a small group of community leaders who wanted to aid the State College of Florida, ManateeSarasota (SCF) by raising funds to provide scholarships, better equip the institution’s classrooms, and support the faculty and staff.

Today, that group remains small with its mighty 15 community leaders, plus three members from the college, including the Foundation’s Executive Director Cassandra Holmes, SCF President Dr. Carol F. Probstfeld and Michael Fuller, who serves as an SCF Trustee Liaison.

CAROL WHITMORE, 1982 MJC ALUM - 15

Carol is a longtime Manatee County resident. She attended MJC (now known as State College of Florida), earning her RN degree in 1982. While working in Healthcare, Carol was elected Holmes Beach City Commissioner in 1991 and became Mayor of Holmes Beach in 1998. In 2006, she was elected as Manatee County Commissioner, At Large, representing 420,000 residents until Nov. 2022. Throughout her political career, Carol worked in the medical profession until 2020.

The Board contributes its expertise and generously gives its time and resources. Providing external oversight of the Foundation’s operations, the Board also has an active committee structure that includes an Asset Management Committee, an Audit and Risk Management Committee, a Finance and Resource Development Committee, a Governance Committee, and a Scholarship Committee.

From Cincinnati to the Suncoast—A New Leader Redefining Philanthropy in Southwest Florida

In June 2023, Gulf Coast Community Foundation welcomed a new captain to steer its philanthropic ship. Phillip Lanham, originally from Cincinnati, OH, assumed the role of president | CEO, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a fervent passion for community impact. It all came as a big surprise to him.

“I wasn’t in the mindset of leaving Cincinnati. I thought my whole career would be there. But I took the phone call, and it was really intriguing,” Lanham reveals. His introduction to Gulf Coast Community Foundation came through a former colleague, Kirstin Fulkerson, who spoke highly of the organization. Lanham’s fascination with community foundations began in 2011 when he joined the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. “I fell in love with the community foundation sector,” he shares, highlighting the sector’s unique ability to unite donors, nonprofits, and elected officials to address community issues.

His decision to lead a community foundation was deliberate, fueled by a desire to create meaningful impact. While many are drawn to the Suncoast by its beaches and weather, Lanham’s attraction was rooted in the region’s rich philanthropic community. “The people are what make a community special, and that is definitely the case here,” he emphasizes.

Lanham believes the area’s distinctiveness in philanthropy is deeply connected to its arts scene, which attracts a generous and determined crowd. “Folks come with money and moxie,” he likes to say, pointing out the financial resources and determination brought by philanthropists from cities like Chicago, Detroit, Boston, and New York. Their big ideas, according to Lanham, contribute to making the region truly special.

With a smile, Lanham acknowledged the saying in the community foundation sector: “If you’ve seen one community foundation, you’ve seen one community foundation.” He compares community foundations

to ice cream, all fundamentally the same but with different flavors, alluding to the unique challenges and opportunities at all community foundations.

Already confident in his knowledge of community foundation mechanics, Lanham, upon his Florida arrival, intentionally focused on understanding the culture of the Suncoast region and connecting with key players in the nonprofit community. “I spent more energy on the relationship side, the softer side of the Foundation,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of understanding the people, nonprofits, and donors that make Gulf Coast special.

When asked about what makes Gulf Coast special, Lanham highlights the Foundation’s community leadership model. Gulf Coast Community Foundation was created in 1995 with proceeds from the sale of the Venice Hospital, a community hospital that was founded by local citizens more than four decades earlier. The visionary decision to create a community foundation from the hospital proceeds provided the Foundation with a significant unrestricted endowment, giving the Board flexibility to make impactful investments and resources to focus on policy and advocacy work.

“To give you some perspective, the foundation from where I came is more than double the size of Gulf Coast, from an asset perspective,” Lanham said. “Yet Gulf Coast’s unrestricted endowment is larger than Cincinnati’s, and it speaks to the ability of our Board and team to take a position on certain initiatives because we have that flexibility.”

He credits this flexibility to Gulf Coast’s decision to focus on three primary areas: affordable housing, green space and water quality, and mental health.

Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s impact is substantial, having granted over $550 million to nonprofits since 1995, and giving out about $40 million in grants each year. Lanham recognizes the power of community foundations to create a lasting impact, describing their role as bringing donors and nonprofits together to address the region’s needs. He says the annual $40 million in grantmaking reflects the dynamic nature of community needs and the Foundation’s agile responsiveness.

As Lanham reflects on his role and impact on the Foundation, he articulates his intentional approach to leadership.

“I wake up and think about what type of leader I want to be and how I want to show up, and I always want to be authentic, growth-minded, and collaborative,” Lanham said. He places a particular emphasis on authenticity, sharing his true self, flaws and all, with donors, nonprofits, and the Board of Directors.

“I think you can be authentic if you’re vulnerable, so I am often vulnerable and share my shortcomings or something I’m struggling with,” Lanham explains, highlighting the importance of building meaningful relationships through vulnerability. “So I am proud of that. But you know, to some of your readers that may come across as soft.”

Lanham also expresses pride in the deep connections he has already built in just under a year with our community. We know he’s not afraid of vulnerability, and you can add ‘difficult conversations’ to the list of things he doesn’t shy away from. “I don’t think ‘conflict’ is a dirty word. I think if handled correctly, it can be healthy because, together with the other person, if you’re vulnerable, you can address the conflict as a third party,” Lanham said. “The conflict is not between two people. It’s this thing over to the side that the two people can come together and solve, and you get to know the other person in a more powerful way.”

Another impact of Lanham’s leadership is the strategic direction he has set for Gulf Coast Community Foundation. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive strategy, he initiated the process to provide clarity and alignment for the organization. Comparing strategy to an actual roadmap, Lanham envisions everyone at the Foundation understanding the direction, even if detours are inevitable due to external factors.

“Say we’re going to California, right? I want everyone— our Board, our staff, and everyone in the community—to be aligned so that Gulf Coast can get to California,” Lanham explains. “We might end up in Napa, or we might end up in San Diego. We’re not sure yet, but we know the direction we’re heading. We might stop, and there will be instances like a hurricane or pandemic that will cause us to pause and take a detour,” Lanham continues. The intentional strategy aims to cultivate clarity and alignment among all stakeholders.

As Gulf Coast Community Foundation refines its strategy in the coming months, Lanham is excited about the direction they’ve charted. His goal is to continue growing

impact in the community, with a spotlight on the Foundation’s three primary focuses. Lanham believes that aligning the Board, staff, and community through a well-defined strategy enables effective decision-making.

As Lanham looks ahead, he outlines his plan for the next eight months. With pending staff changes and retirements, his focus is on building a fully-staffed and dynamic leadership team.

“It’s not a ‘cleaning the house’ situation,” he said. “It’s that people went on to new opportunities or new chapters in their careers, and it’s our opportunity to recruit the best and brightest to serve this community.”

His refined strategy, centered around growth in impact, partnerships with nonprofits and donors, and organizational development, is set to launch in July.

Something he not only leads his personal life with, but what he has now brought to his work at Gulf Coast.

Lanham believes that by embracing vulnerability, challenging oneself to think big, and growing existing and new partnerships, we can expect Gulf Coast Community Foundation to soar to new heights in the years ahead.

Celebrating of conservation 20 years

THE IMPACT OF CONSERVATION FOUNDATION OF THE GULF COAST

In the heart of Florida’s ever-expanding landscape, Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast stands as a beacon of environmental stewardship, celebrating two decades of unwavering commitment to land conservation. The tangible strides made by the Foundation do not come without daily challenges faced and the collaborative spirit that defines their mission.

Board Chair Rob Brown says the mission is, and always has been, simple.

“It’s about conserving land forever and there’s a myriad of ways we do that,” Brown said. “But that’s the bottom line. It’s what we’re here for.”

Board Member and Land Protection Committee Chair, Pat Carlton, says their job is to find the pieces of land that are environmentally sensitive and/or vulnerable that need to be saved from development.

Carlton says with a thousand people moving to Florida every day, that gets more and more challenging.

“It’s like there’s a time clock that’s ticking. There’s a lot of things that are going on. We’ve got a lot of pressures,” Carlton said. “Agribusiness is struggling in a lot of areas. And people are making some generational decisions about their property. We hope to be able to help them make a decision to conserve their property.”

Fundraising plays a major role in how well they’re able to conserve land, with help from events like their annual Feast Upon the Fields. But there’s a lot more that goes into land conservation than raising money.

“We’re bringing buyers and sellers and funding sources together and educating landowners and future conservation buyers on opportunities available to them - it takes a fair amount of time to go through that process,” Brown said.

It can sometimes be a decade-long process, but Carlton feels lucky to have the bandwidth to tackle it all. He says their staff, supportive volunteers, and monetary reserves

all set them apart as a land conservation agency.

“There’s a lot of organizations that aren’t fully staffed that don’t have the ability to do things quickly. We can move if we need to. We can move pretty quickly,” Carlton said. “We also have a dedicated Land Fund available to step in immediately in some of these projects. And that’s one thing that gives us the flexibility to move and navigate some of these very complex projects.”

And the foundation has grown to a point where external environmental agencies, like state parks, are reaching out to them for help.

“Because they recognized a project needed to be handled quicker than they could do it,” Brown said. “So they trust us to do it, and we provide the speed aspect.”

So, why is conserving this land so important? Carlton says it’s because of how unique Florida’s environment is.

“It’s about conserving land forever...that’s the bottom line. It’s what we’re here for.”

“We have estuaries, we have the Gulf of Mexico. We have rivers, we have some very sensitive lands inland. We have swamps, we have a lot of areas and environmental topography that’s really, really unusual,” Carlton said.

Not to mention the animals all around the state that depend on a safe and stable environment.

“The creatures that live out there need to continue to have the same type of environment,” Carlton said. “And we can’t just shovel the environment around with bulldozers and then move it from one spot to the other. It needs to be kept in place and needs to be kept in the current state.”

Brown also points out the importance of connecting conserved parcels of land to create corridors throughout the state. A critical factor in keeping native species like our state animal, the Florida panther, safe.

“Our dream is to create a corridor connecting Duette Preserve in Northeast Manatee County, all the way down

through the Myakka Island and state park, then down to Babcock Webb, and from there down into the Everglades,” Brown said. “With that connectivity, an animal with a range as large as a male panther would hopefully have less chance to get run over, and there are benefits for other animals too.”

Brown says Conservation Foundation’s efforts also directly affect water quality, citing examples like the 2018 bout of red tide and the infamous Piney Point incident.

“It’s top of mind when people can’t go to the beach, or you can’t have your wedding at sunset on the bay or the hotel downtown,” Brown said.

But for Conservation Foundation, it’s always top of mind.

“It’s not just the eco-tourism that you would expect, like the kayak guides and the fishing guides and the tourism operators. It has deeper economic roots there as well,” Brown said.

When asked what he thinks the biggest accomplishment of the foundation is thus far, Brown didn’t think twice.

“It’s conserving Orange Hammock, which is one particular parcel that’s over 5,000 acres. And it was pretty much the largest parcel available in Sarasota,” he said.

And it took about 20 years of fundraising and collaboration with other agencies to make it happen.

“It went all the way up to the cabinet-level with the governor willing to be flexible and agreeing to let us fundraise to backfill,” Brown said.

In addition to their land conservation efforts, Conservation Foundation is also a champion in nonprofit collaboration. They work with several local youth-serving nonprofits, such as Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, ALSO Youth, and Tidewell Hospice Blue Butterflies, to get kids outside and provide special moments in nature.

Additionally, for more than 15 years, Conservation Foundation and Sarasota Audubon Society have partnered for the protection of Snowy Plovers on Siesta Key. They are also fundraising together to Re-Wild the Quad Parcels – 33 acres adjacent to the internationally known Celery Fields – to diversify the habitat, add additional opportunities for passive recreation, and create a destination to be enjoyed by all.

That collaboration is something they plan to continue over the next 20 years, as well as continuing to grow their donor and volunteer base.

“The number of people attending our programs has dramatically increased,” Brown said. “ The number that have joined our legacy society and made major gifts over their lives has increased, and as that becomes a more stable platform, it allows us to do more on the land conservation side.”

Carlton says he also hopes the foundation can become even more skilled in their communication with other state agencies to make the conservation race a faster one before that time clock is up.

“It’s very confusing and very complicated to try to get cooperation. We’ve started to get a little bit more adept and having some upper-level conversations and discussions with the people that make these decisions,” Carlton said. “We’re able to guide these agencies and help them understand what’s happening on the ground. We bring kind of a different perspective. And that sometimes is helpful.”

Brown and Carlton say Conservation Foundation is always looking to grow its volunteer base as well.

Asolo Rep stages

‘electrifying’ musical take on

Angry Men Twelve

The most common question people ask when they hear that Asolo Rep is staging a musical version of the classic jury room drama Twelve Angry Men is “Why a musical?” Peter Rothstein, in his first season as Asolo Rep’s producing artistic director, is also directing the show. He understands the question, but adds some historical perspective.

“I think when we step back from a lot of musicals, they probably sounded a bit like crazy ideas,” he says. “I’m guessing when someone pitched West Side Story and said, ‘I want to do Romeo and Juliet about modern-day gangs in New York,’ people probably thought, ‘Hmm, that doesn’t sound like Oklahoma! or My Fair Lady.’ But I think when you have the right team of people and the right impulses, or you find the rules around why people sing and why music exists in the world, then lots of outstanding stories can be set to music. A musical demands heightened emotions, and we certainly have that in Twelve Angry Men.”

The story began in 1954 as a live television drama written by Reginald Rose, about a jury deliberating the fate of a young man accused of murdering his father. Although the teen’s racial identity is never specifically mentioned, it’s clear from the jurors’ comments that he is a member of a minority.

In 1957, actor Henry Fonda collaborated with Rose and director Sidney Lumet to produce a theatrical movie version featuring Fonda, Lee J. Cobb and E.G. Marshall in the cast. Rose also adapted it as a play for the theater which has been staged throughout the world, including a Broadway run in 2004. Showtime aired a production in 1997, directed by William Friedkin with a multi-racial cast; Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Ossie Davis and Courtney B. Vance were among the players, with an updated script by Rose.

The newest version, with music and lyrics by Michael Holland and book by David Simpatico, is adapted from Rose’s play, with permission from his estate (with the stipulation that the angry jurors had to remain male, since Rose intended the story to reflect the toxic masculinity of many of the characters). The musical premiered in 2022 at Theater Latté Da in Minneapolis, with Rothstein as director. The

Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s review proclaimed that “…this Twelve Angry Men is as close to flawless as it could be. The electrifying cast creates a true ensemble. Director Peter Rothstein gives it shape, nuance and a propulsive energy.”

Most of the actors from that production are also in Asolo Rep’s staging, including Sasha Andreev as Juror 4 and Curtis Bannister as Juror 8 (the jurors are known only by their numbers in the show).

Bannister says, “Twelve Angry Men is an amazing play. The music, lyrics and script remain faithful to Rose’s original vision, but they transform it into a contemporary-musicalmeets-heightened-stage-play. It’s presented in an amazing way, because it all takes place in one space and essentially nobody leaves the stage.”

Like many of the actors in the Asolo Rep production, Andreev was involved as an actor in the workshop process as the play was being developed in Minneapolis. He says the musical adds a new dimension to the Twelve Angry Men canon of productions and variations on television, stage and film over the past seven decades.

“I think the musical medium allows you to expand or unpack a narrative in a way that straight theater can’t always do,” Andreev says. “The challenge with this piece is that the music has to maintain the tension and the rhythm of the spoken text because the play is such a well-crafted piece of writing. So the goal was to keep the tension of the original script, while still being able to expand certain moments to advance the story through music. It was also important to retain the 1950s atmosphere of the original, while observing the story through a modern lens. And one of those ways it does that is through color-conscious casting, placing the actors of color in that room in that time period — and to show how all those men would relate to each other then.”

In the Asolo Rep production, audiences will get to experience the perspective of each of the jurors — quite literally. Through the magic of stagecraft, the set revolves throughout the show to afford different views of the men as they argue and rebut their theories of the defendant’s guilt or innocence. This effect also gives the audience a sense that time is passing, emphasizing that the story is unfolding in real time in the tense hours of the jury’s deliberations.

Unlike many musicals, there is no dancing, but there is a choreographer – Kelli Foster Warder. As Rothstein explains, “The blocking of the actors is marked to music. It doesn’t look like footwork or traditional dance, but we do use heightened movement, including slow motion and freezes. The piece was written originally for television, so it’s rooted in realism. But a musical propels you to a more expressionistic place.”

The actors in the cast praise how music that reflects the play’s era and mood is used throughout the show — ranging from 1950s cool jazz to a singing style known as vocalese, to blues, swing and other genres.

“Nearly every note that’s sung has a purpose to propel the drama forward,” Bannister explains. “It never feels like ‘We need to add a song here because it’s a musical and music should be here.’ ”

Andreev adds that “sometimes music accompanies action and spoken words that lead into a song. Although music is used in different ways, what’s consistent is that at the end of most musical sequences a mind is changed.”

Rothstein believes one of the main lessons of the show is that — at a time when people’s opinions often tend to be fixed and reinforced by what they choose to watch, listen to and read — minds can be changed.

“Ultimately I think what the piece is saying is that the point of discourse and debate isn’t necessarily clinging to one political agenda or another. It’s often seen as a sign of weakness in modern culture that your political convictions are unwavering, but this piece contends that changing your mind can be the most heroic of choices.”

Another aspect of the criminal justice system Twelve Angry Men illuminates is that, as imperfect as the quest for justice may be in the show and in the system, it is up to ordinary citizens to decide whether to find a defendant is “guilty” or “not guilty.”

“The musical illustrates the incredible promise and privilege that comes with our American judicial system,” says Rothstein. “It’s not a dictatorship, it’s not a monarchy. The people are the jurors, justice is in the hands of the people; that’s not true even in every civilized nation.”

The heated arguments that eventually give way to the jury’s final unanimous decision are amplified in the musical.

“In a musical you get to expand moments,” says Rothstein. “As we’re leading into the final jurors — the hold-outs — changing their minds, there’s an epic ballad called “Hopefully Not Too Late.” Musicals often include an anthem that makes the theme of the show palpable, inspirational, and that song is the perfect example. While it’s a very intense drama, I find the musical ultimately hopeful.”

When Sarasota Art Museum opened its doors in 2019 in conjunction with Ringling College of Art and Design, it embarked on its mission of being a catalyst for appreciation and understanding of the art of our time.

Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design is a kunsthalle—a contemporary art museum without a permanent collection that regularly features a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. This allows the museum to insert an endless rotation of transformative, relevant, and pioneering exhibitions and programs designed to elevate and empower all by cultivating discerning visual thinkers and ethical citizens.

Its latest exhibition, Impact: Contemporary Artists at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, is now open and available to the public until July 7, 2024. This exhibition hopes to expand upon conventional ideas of art’s impact on our daily lives through the presentation of recent works made by 10 different United States based artists: Diana Al-Hadid, Sanford Biggers, Chitra Ganesh, Todd Gray, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Michelle Lopez, Ted Riederer, John Sims, Kukuli Velarde, and William Villalongo. This is the first major collaboration between Sarasota Art Museum and Hermitage Artist Retreat—multi-disciplinary artist retreat serving artists, the creative process, and the community.

The retreat takes place on the Hermitage nine-acre campus in Manasota Key at the southern tip of Sarasota County. Accomplished and diverse artists are provided with multiweek residences to create new works of theater, music, visual art, literature, and more. Guest curator and former Hermitage Curatorial Council member Dan Cameron led the way for this exhibition to take place.

“When we were thinking about the exhibitions that we would be featuring this year, we got to talking with the Hermitage Artist Retreat,” says Virginia Shearer, Executive Director of Sarasota Art Museum. “We came up with the idea of an exhibition that would highlight 10 extraordinary visual artists to capture the rich environment of the retreat. This project supports contemporary artists to develop their practice and create new work.”

Each artist in Impact is represented by examples of their work that address established social, cultural, and philosophical boundaries of creative expression within the visual arts. The pieces on display feature a broad range of materials and techniques, including sculpture, painting, installation, video, photography, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and social practice.

Many of the participating artists have focused their work on issues of history and identity. Examples of this include the case of Sanford Biggers’ loving appropriation of vintage African-American quilts, John Sims’ intense exploration of Confederate ideology, and Kukuli Velarde’s intricate fusion of Catholicism with indigenous religion.

History of Sarasota Art Museum

While the primary building itself is nearly 100 years old, Sarasota Art Museum is still a relatively new addition to the ever-growing arts and culture scene in Sarasota. The vision for the museum began in 2003, when a group formed with the goal of creating the first contemporary art museum in the region. A partnership was formed with Ringling College of Art and Design to transform the old Sarasota High School site into a museum and visual arts educational center.

Sarasota High School opened in 1927 and served as the main high school in Sarasota for quite some time. A second building parallel to the primary spot was added in 1960 and designed by architect Paul Rudolph. The high school eventually closed its doors to students in 1996. The buildings lay dormant for several years and needed significant work for the historic site to be used again.

“I was so excited and inspired when I got the call and joined the team here. It’s stunning to see how the community and Ringling College came together to save these two historic buildings and transform them into elevated, elegant, and beautiful spaces,” says Shearer.

Today the facility serves as a resource for learning about global art discourse and deepening appreciation for 20th and 21st century art and artists through exhibition gallery spaces, an auditorium, an outdoor sculpture garden, a bistro, retail store, and extensive grounds space for outdoor gatherings.

One of the most important values to Sarasota Art museum is education. The team is always adding new and exciting ways to teach people of all ages the beauty of art. There are several different weekly programs and camps available for children to attend and expand their artistic skills. The Studios at SAM is a dedicated classroom space that typically provides all materials with classes led by professional teaching artists.

This year’s summer camp runs from June 3 to July 26 and is available for children ages 7-13. Campers will use design-thinking processes to explore contemporary art through a variety of materials and concepts. The goal is to evoke curiosity and hone in on critical thinking skills while encouraging individual creativity and self-expression. Attendees will spend time in the museum galleries looking and learning about art and artmaking, then create their own masterpieces to show off at their own art show.

Sarasota Art Museum is the only art museum in the country to host OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of the Ringling College Continuing Studies Program, within the museum itself. OLLI provides mature adults aged 50+ with a community where they can engage in learning for the joy of learning. The program at Sarasota Art Museum offers classes related to all forms of visual and liberal arts specifically geared toward these lifelong learners.

Another exciting aspect of the campus are the stunningly beautiful event spaces that are available for rent. The Thomas McGuire Hall is a vibrant space adorned with a stunning mural that can host 140-170 people for many different types of events. The Marcy & Michael Klein Plaza is an outdoor paved space located directly between both buildings that can host events for 160-300 people. The Wendy G. Surkis & Peppi Elona Lobby can host 70110 people as a gorgeous space where historic meets modern side-by-side. The Jan Schmidt Loggia is a smaller space that can host 20-30 people with an eye-catching backdrop. Weddings for approximately 100 people can take place at the Tom & Sherry Koski Tower. There is also an auditorium available that seats 100.

“I want people to feel very comfortable and welcomed here. I want them to build memories with us. Events like weddings, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and more, means that this place will always live on as a legacy and really mean something to people,”’ says Shearer.

For those wishing to make a day of it, the Bistro at Sarasota Art Museum features a farm-to-table menu inspired by Florida’s regional fruit stands and farmer’s markets and curated by Executive Chef Kaytlin Dangaran. The Bistro is located in the Paul Rudolph building along with a gift shop and boutique store of clothing and jewelry called SHOP.

The Creative Empowerment Project: Fostering Future Visual Artists Through Innovative Partnerships

The Creative Empowerment Project (CEP)’s collaboration with Booker High School in Sarasota is revolutionizing the approach to educating young individuals in film production and digital arts by offering them real-world experience and teaching them unique skills vital for the industry’s future. The initiative aims to create an affordable, industry-driven curriculum and professional training to support a creative community amidst the growing trend of on-shoring. The project was initiated by Adam Armbruster, Senior Partner at ESA, and an advisor to Caring for Children Charities, who was inspired by the potential of combining Semkhor’s apprenticeship model for film and content education with CCS’s longstanding support for student scholarships, which has contributed over $9 million in donations to various charities aiding children:

“I got my foot in the door in the TV business at age 16, giving me a dramatic competitive edge because by the time I graduated college, I had six years of professional

TV experience, while my peers were trying to secure internships. The creative empowerment program provides every student with this opportunity. It’s a dream I’ve had for years.”

Since November, the CEP has been collaborating with Booker High School’s Visual and Performing Arts Program (VPA), which for over five decades has been a beacon of excellence and launched numerous successful careers, underscoring the potential of dedicated arts education. By building on this legacy, the CEP aims to enhance the VPA’s impact through specialized learning and growth opportunities. Over the last five months, the CEP has offered master classes to VPA students at Booker, providing direct access to a wide range of information to support their creative development.

The first guest was Golden Globe winner Dylan McDermott, followed by acclaimed producer Paul Schiff. The most recent guest was Adam Hendricks, co-founder

of Divide/Conquer, a top production company for genre film closely working with Blumhouse Production and who is in discussions with the CEP to bring some of his films to Sarasota. Intensive classes, that covered key topics such as integrating VFX into independent filming and developing a successful post-production strategy, were also provided, and taught by experts in their fields.

David Shapiro, owner of Semkhor, emphasizes the program’s commitment to an adaptable and accessible education model: “Our goal is to demystify the industry by providing a solid educational foundation while ensuring the program’s flexibility and affordability. We are actively engaging with the Sarasota School system to integrate this initiative, broadening its reach to foster diverse talents and ensure that every talented student, regardless of their situation, has a pathway to a successful career in the entertainment and media industries.”

The next master class with Chris Jericho on April 13th at Booker High will discuss his cutting-edge blockchain graphic novel based on an original character he created, The Painmaker. Students will learn about Chris’s creative process and the unique aspects of the Painmaker interactive comic. Some students will also have the

opportunity to work on animating segments of the story. The event will include a signing of the first edition in collaboration with Darkside Comics of Sarasota.

The CEP is also collaborating with Booker to integrate a documentary on Scott “Stonebreaker” Ross, produced by renowned actor Andy Garcia and his production partner Bruce Burchmore, into an extended course. This will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of documentary development and organization.

The initiative is rapidly developing thanks to strong community support, with many more guest speakers and unique classes and opportunities forthcoming.

“My paintings are about beauty, complexity, mystery and scalelessness. They most often beckon the ethereal and atmospheric qualities of infinity. Celestial vibrations of color created with paint and thread. First I paint the canvas, then I wrap the canvas with as many as 50 layers of thread, string, yarn, wire and/or monofilament, says Balut.

Each layer has a unique color, materiality and sheen that reflects light differently depending on its depth and contrast or resonance with the paint behind. Viewed perpendicular to the piece the paint typically dominates the reflected light and combines with the thread to create a deep and rich composition. Thread shadows on the canvas and recessive layers of thread contribute to the depth and complexity.

Viewed at an angle the paint is subdued, the reflection of light from the threads dominate and the uppermost layers create a lenticular, fuzzy glow. The pieces resonate with simplicity and a faint reckoning of our place in the firmament. “A beautiful moment, somewhere.”
