love hearing from friends who have been away on summer vacation or who are gone for several months that it is “good to be home.” I’ve been hearing that more and more as the years progress. And why wouldn’t they say that? We do live in a great home—Sarasota— and whether you love the heat of summer or just tolerate it, there’s lots to do in our town both outdoors and inside.

In this issue, the vibrant colors of our environment, the never-ending quest for knowledge, and the excitement of new challenges, are the theme. Maybe you are dodging the oh so predictable five o’clock thunderstorm and marveling at the colors of its aftermath rainbow. Perhaps it’s our incredible sunsets, our inviting blue waterways, or the varied green shades of our lush oasis. You can count on finding things to do in our town that will excite every one of your senses. Being out in the heat not your thing? We’ve got you covered. Take a class, visit some galleries and museums, and catch some indoor performances.

If you’re new to town and need some ideas for summer fun, please read “Color Your World.” In this article you can learn about some adult beginner art classes, colorful exhibitions for all generations, the wonders of the sea, underwater thrills, and top of water freedom. These experiences will keep you cool, warm your imagination, and heat your soul. There are lots of other opportunities to explore—hopefully these recommendations will get your imagination flowing.

In our new “Around Town” monthly feature, Sarasota lover and philanthropist Keith Monda shares tips about his healthy and balanced life, as well the important causes he supports. And speaking of healthy and balanced, the residents of Sarasota Bay Club have plenty of activities that help them do just that. We go behind the scenes with the Club’s activities director to find out how she keeps wide smiles on the faces of Bay Club residents.

It has been said that “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies…The man who never reads lives only one.” If you’re not a reader, what are you waiting for? Live more. Be sure to take a peek at some wonderful book recommendations by your fellow Sarasotans for some good summer reading.

We need to give thanks to the wonderful work of Tidewell Hospice and its fundraising arm, Tidewell Foundation. They have transformed dignified highquality hospice care, while fulfilling physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. You can read all about this much-needed nonprofit in our monthly philanthropy article. They need our support in many ways.

A venerable institution in our town, Pines of Sarasota celebrates 75 years of caring for our seniors regardless of financial ability. We proudly feature this organization in our monthly education article. The organization’s PCA, CAN and LPN programs are first rate, and they are one of the few long-term care facilities that also provides childcare onsite for PCA and CAN students. You can read all about this and so much more about the Pines in this in-depth story.

Our monthly “Spotlight” article features Senior Friendship Centers. The story behind its origin is quite interesting and the activities and vital programs they provide for our seniors are outstanding. The centers bring so much joy and comfort to many, and once inside, to quote the article subhead, you are “Stepping into the Fullness of Life.”

The bottom line is it is never too late to learn. Just look at me. When I arrived in Sarasota in 2018, I had no idea I would have to learn a few new things so I could enjoy the varied activities that Sarasota offers and participate to the fullest. I definitely had to step out of my comfort zone! So many events I attended had great music to dance to from disco to rock and roll, to the classics—and dancing was never my forte! If I wanted to feel more a part of things, I knew I needed some help.

I enrolled at Sara Dance and had a wonderful teacher named Ilona Tiscenko. We decided I would learn the Foxtrot. It would give me a foundation for whatever kind of music was played. Throw in a bit of Rumba and Cha Cha and I was all set, or so I thought. Fortunately, free-form touch dancing seems to be my go-to move. It’s like my golf game, I am not particularly good, but I can get around. But at least now, I always have fun on the dance floor!

My dance lessons bolstered my confidence to participate this past season in Forty Carrots Wine, Women & Shoes event as a “Soleman.” Struggling to learn my dance numbers, I called on Ilona to help me yet again combined with the support of the guys, especially my good friend Carl Troiano. I did a fair job. My reviews were good; honestly, my dance was in the fourth hour of the event so I must question everyone’s judgment by then! We all had a lot of fun and a fundraising record was made that evening.

So put yourself out there. Take chances and learn. Participate in something new. Sarasota is full of opportunity. Just ask the members at Senior Friendship Centers.

Next up for me—maybe it’s hula dancing!

Lifting Our Community

In 2020, Tidewell Hospice announced its intent to create the Tidewell Foundation. This decision was made to help donors better understand the impact of their support for the independent not-for-profit health provider offering end-of-life care for 10,000 patients in the region annually. It was also a necessary step in furthering the reach of Tidewell’s healthcare philanthropy and realizing their mission of “lifting our community.”

It’s no secret that the Tidewell name is associated with a massive amount of impact in the Sarasota region, with more than four decades of caring for thousands of people—regardless of their ability to pay.

When the Foundation’s Interim President Delesa Morris is out in the community and attending local events, she’s often inundated with stories from people sharing how Tidewell’s care has helped them or a loved one.

“Once I say that I work with Tidewell, they start sharing their stories with me,” she said. “They tell me ‘You took care of so many needs I didn’t know I had,’ or ‘the endof-life care you gave to my loved one allowed me to focus on my last hours with them. I can’t thank you enough!’”

This is one of the many reasons Morris is honored to be the new leader of Tidewell Foundation, and she says it is what healthcare philanthropy is all about.

“What we do is life changing,” she said.

Since Tidewell Foundation launched in 2020, it’s connected donors with a variety of valuable and much-needed programs in its four-county coverage area that includes Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto.

According to Morris, this is just the beginning. With a background of over 25 years in healthcare and highereducation not-for-profits, Morris holds an M.S. Degree in Organizational Leadership and a CFRE (Certified FundRaising Executive Exam) credential, which is only given to 7,700 professionals around the world.

She joined the Foundation only a year ago, but she’s thrilled to be part of everything Tidewell Foundation is doing to respond to the many needs that otherwise go unmet.

“I was drawn to Tidewell for multiple reasons. The first was their mission. I love their mission statement; that they’re

• Tidewell Foundation •

brightening the lives of families and residents of communities that Tidewell serves,” she shared. “I also love serving in the community where I live and seeing the impact.”

“I want to lead a foundation team that’s helping transform healthcare through philanthropy,” she added.

Tidewell Hospice recently merged with Tampa Bay area non-profit care provider Empath Health to form the country’s largest non-profit hospice and home care-based health care organization. Empath President and CEO Jonathan Fleece, who led Tidewell Hospice prior to the merger, explains how they can offer more to the community by combining forces.

“We believe in enhancing access to health care by collaborating with other like-minded community organizations to improve patient outcomes and experiences. Empath Health and our affiliates, such as Tidewell Hospice and Empath Home Health, have close relationships with notfor-profit organizations such as Sarasota Memorial Health Care System.”

Empath partners with State College of Florida for Tidewell’s Nurse Residency Program, enhancing and increasing the

quality and quantity of hospice nurses. They also work with regional non-profit Senior Friendship Centers to care for the variety of needs seniors have. Empath also jointly provides primary and specialty care services for the elderly population on Medicaid and Medicare in partnership with MCR Health.

Though many are aware of the Tidewell name through Tidewell’s hospice care, there is so much more to what Tidewell does, made possible through Tidewell Foundation. Morris wants to increase awareness of their many areas of impact, so more people in the community are served.

“We want to educate people and make them aware that we don’t charge for these services. They are all funded by grants and donors.”

In 2022 alone, Tidewell Foundation was able to gift back $4.5 million in grants to Tidewell Hospice. Some of Tidewell’s main impact areas made possible through charitable donations to Tidewell Foundation include:

Wishes Fund

This fund helps to fulfill a last wish before a patient dies.

AUGUST 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE 31 • P hi LA nth R o PY •
Delesa Morris, Interim President of Tidewell Foundation Jonathan Fleece, President and CEO of Empath Health

Morris says they’ve granted wishes such as a 78th wedding anniversary party complete with cake and flowers to a 98-year-old woman and two custom Build-a-Bears with voice recordings for nine and eleven-year-old boys whose mother was in Tidewell’s care. At just 40 years old, their mother wanted to continue being present with her children, even after passing away. The Wishes Fund granted her wish by arranging recordings of herself reciting Jewish prayers in Hebrew that the bears would play back when her children held them, giving them a sense of comfort and connection to their mother.

Blue Butterfly Program

Free and evidence-based children’s grief support counseling is provided to serve children in the region who have lost a loved one. Every year in the Sarasota area alone, more than 8,000 children lose a parent or sibling. Last year, Tidewell provided grief care to 336 children and their families in the program.

End-of-Life Doula

With specialized training from the End-of-Life Doula Association (INELDA), highly trained End-of-Life Doulas provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and families, walking through the final journey with them. Tidewell currently has 40 End-of-Life Doulas that offer support through vigil planning, legacy work, and grief support for both the patients and families they serve.

Grief Support Services

Tidewell offers free grief counseling to anyone in the community who needs it, regardless of whether a family member has been a Tidewell patient.

The list of other impact areas is extensive and shows the massive amount of support Tidewell pours into the community. These range from their end-of-life Cardiac Care Program for heart failure patients, medical services and hospice care for children with advanced illness, an Expressive Arts Program that matches professional artists with patients to experience the healing benefits of art, a Humanitarian Fund to help patients and their families with emergency and non-medical financial relief, massage therapy and music therapy for end-of-life patients, a pet therapy program that provides over 100 trained pet therapists and animals for hospice visitations, and the Tidewell Honors Veterans Program that recognizes the service of veteran patients.

Many in healthcare philanthropy are feeling the effects of the national shortage of nurses in the United States. Tidewell is responding to this through their Nurse Residency Program, which trains and licenses registered nurses with specializations in hospice nursing.

Another program, the annual Linens and Love drive presented in partnership with Dignity Memorial, provides blankets and bedding to Tidewell patients.

“Our clinicians are out in the field. You can imagine what they encounter when they see patients in their homes,” Morris said. “We are seeing a trend where patients don’t have linens or a sheet on their bed. It’s heartbreaking.”

Donors can purchase new bedding for patients or donate money to go toward purchasing sheets, pillowcases, and blankets.

32 SARASOTA SCENE | AUGUST 2023 • P hi LA nth R o PY •
“Healthcare and the community’s needs are changing rapidly, and Tidewell Hospice is a pioneer during today’s transformations.”

“It’s amazing what a new comforter or sheet set will do to lift their spirits.” Morris added.

Morris points out that none of these programs would be possible without the immense amount of financial support from donors.

Volunteers are also integral to keeping all programs successful. Not only are Tidewell volunteers involved in their many programs, but they also keep the Tidewell Treasures resale shops running smoothly, which provides funds to go toward Tidewell Hospice. In 2022, Tidewell volunteers contributed 61,099 total hours in support of Tidewell’s care and programs.

“There are so many ways you can support based on whatever sparks your interest,” Morris said.

As far as goals for Tidewell’s future, Morris says she wants to grow philanthropic funds, and provide more access to care in the community in the highest need areas. Some of those high need areas are music therapy and mental health counseling. Salaries for these positions are paid through donor funds.

Like Morris, Fleece is excited about the direction the Foundation and Tidewell Hospice are headed.

“Healthcare and the community’s needs are changing rapidly, and Tidewell Hospice is a pioneer during today’s transformations,” he said. “Tidewell is constantly innovating to create an extraordinary patient and family experience and enhance its healthcare services, including cardiac programs and others. Tidewell can provide more acute-level care in the home than ever before.”

“We’re here for all stages of care, for all dimensions of wellbeing, and for all aspects dear to one’s life,” Fleece added.

If you are at a fundraiser or gathering, you notice him right away. You can’t help it—he stands out. He is charming, uber smart, and kindhearted. He is a man who cares greatly about the health and wellbeing of others as well as his own health, and it shows. Meet Keith Monda and learn his story, his drivers, his passions, and his advice on how you too can have a more meaningful and healthier life.

Before retiring to Sarasota, you were at Coach, Inc. as its President & COO. What advice do you have for younger executives today with ambitions to rise to the top?

Look ahead at what you want for your future and the skills you are building in your career. I spent time at several companies before the opportunity at Coach came along (Pfizer, J. Crew, Timberland) and the experiences brought me to a place where I could truly add value when I joined the leadership team at Coach.

I also always followed a few personal axioms throughout my career: Always do your best. Continue to raise the bar. Take prudent risks. Recognize that success depends on collaboration and that the customer is always first.

Can you pinpoint any drivers or defining moments in your younger years that led to your career success and your passion to help others?

I was an economics major at The Ohio State University and stopped short of getting my doctorate. I left with an understanding that it was important to have a world view, and that to be successful, I needed to start in a big city at a big company and learn from the ground up.

Regarding philanthropy, there are many defining moments for me, but here is an early one: When I was in grad school, a neighbor left a note on the door asking if she could borrow a few dollars to feed her children who were hungry. I keep that note in our kitchen cabinet as a reminder that there are people in need, and I can make a difference.

We are so fortunate to have you living in our community. You are a person who cares deeply about children, education, and conservation. Let us first talk about children. Why children and which children’s programs do you support?

I believe our best long-term investment is in children. You can change their lives today and give them the opportunity

to create their own successful future. For me, it starts with making sure they are fed—so I served on the local All Faiths Food Bank board and chaired the Feeding America board. V (partner Veronica Brady) and I helped start All Faith’s annual Campaign Against Summer Hunger which raises funds to feed kids when school is not in session. Children First, Boys and Girls Clubs, Child Protection Center and Girls Inc are also some of the local organizations we support.

Education is so important to society. It is our “passport to the future.” You have been very generous with your time and treasure to various educational programs. Tell us more. V and I helped get a literacy intervention program (Reading Recovery) started in the Sarasota district and we continue to provide support. At Ohio State, I funded a scholarship program that enables deserving students to travel abroad for a semester—over 600 students have now had an opportunity to expand their world view!

We know that for the future of our world we must be better environmental stewards. Please share your thoughts on this and give us some examples of your environmental contributions. We agree, and education is a key part of that. I am a proud member of the Selby Gardens board and am excited about the education and conservation work being done there. V and I also fund a program at Mote Marine that provides summer internships for 10 college students to work with Mote researchers and pursue their interests. I have also been active with The Nature Conservancy and helped fund a cleanup of the Gulf area which employed homeless veterans in the effort.

In addition, I have been the primary investor in a start-up energy business.

We have developed a technology that reduces the level of CO2 emissions in fossil fuels. I am not sure what our ultimate outcome will be, but we must keep trying.

You love to swim, and you have helped children learn to swim as well. First, please share your passion for the sport and tell us about your teaching children to swim. I do love to swim—at least half a mile every day. I have been doing it for nearly 20 years. It’s great exercise and gives me a lot of time to think.

In 2012 when a local nonprofit that provided swimming lessons to children closed, we started a program that provides a week’s worth of water safety lessons during the school day to every second grader in Sarasota County public schools. The program is called Monda Kids SWIM (Safe Water Instruction Matters) and over 20,000 kids have now participated.

Swimming is one way you keep in shape. Please share your personal routine for better health and nutrition. In addition to my daily swim, I alternate lifting weights and doing 5-10 miles on an elliptical daily. We take a yoga class once a week which has really added to my flexibility and balance skills. Diet is key: I eat fish, but no meat. No gluten, no dairy, and I limit the amount of processed food I eat.

For someone struggling with motivation and a plan for a healthier and more balanced life, what advice can you offer?

My guidance is to develop a plan and stick to it. Measure performance. I keep a notebook with me when I work out and record all my activity. It just becomes habit.

As a man about town, please tell our readers some of the places you love the best.

Sarasota Art Museum and The Ringling are high on the list. I also like going to Selby Gardens and The Bay, and even though I might complain to V, any event where we can support the causes that make this community so special.

What are some of your favorite restaurants?

State Street Eating House, Michael’s on East, Jack Dusty, The Ringling Grillroom, Roessler’s and Azul are my go to’s!

If you can select any place in the world to visit, where would you go and why?

Japan. Over the years with Coach, I travelled to Japan many times and was impressed with its beauty. Hoping to get back there in the next year or so!

How to start investing using Monorail

Investing is the process of purchasing something or putting your money towards something with the hopes of gaining a profit. While investing involves risk, for many, investing can offer significant rewards.

There are various ways to invest your money. Investing can present an opportunity to grow your wealth and set yourself up for a more secure financial future. If you're brand new to investing, you may be wondering how to get started. This beginner's guide will help better explain some popular investing options and teach you what you need to know to get started with your investment goals.

Why Is Investing Important?

Investing is important because it can help you achieve financial security. It can be difficult for your income and wealth to grow substantially without investing. A regular savings account, for example, is best for your short-term savings goals. You may earn interest but will only earn so much, resulting in much smaller growth.

Investing, on the other hand, is a great way to achieve your long-term financial goals. It involves risk and takes a longer time to reach your goals, but it can usually provide a higher rate of return than regular savings. If you're hoping to feel comfortable financially in the future, you should consider making investing a priority.

If you never save or invest money, it can be nearly impossible to comfortably afford to live without having to work for the rest of your life. Many people choose to invest during their working years to reach their retirement goals without worrying about finances.

What to Consider Before You Invest Your Money

It's essential to outline your goals before investing your money. Your goals may include deciding how much you plan to have by a specific time frame and what investment methods you want to pursue. Those decisions will depend on your life plans and personal situation.

Additionally, be sure to think through your investment choices before taking action. Investing comes with risk, and there are never any guarantees. You should thoroughly research all of your investment options to learn as much as possible. With more knowledge, you can make financial choices that align with your needs and goals.

How to Start Investing in Stocks

Investing in stocks is a popular option to consider. You can buy shares of stock or equities. When you invest in a stock, you become a part-owner of the company. You can be rewarded by investing in that company.

If the company does well, the value of its stocks may increase. That can be a big benefit to you. If you sell the stocks while they're worth more than you paid, you can make a profit. Additionally, you can earn money from shareholder dividends. These are usually paid out every quarter and are paid out as additional stock shares instead of cash. Not all companies choose to pay dividends, but many do.

The stock market is volatile, and returns are not guaranteed, but typically, investors can make good long-term returns when investing in the stock market. You can buy stocks through an exchange. When choosing which stocks to purchase, it's smart to invest in companies you like and trust. You can also easily start by learning how to invest small amounts of money rather than risking a good chunk of change. Start where you're comfortable.

The Bottom Line

Yes, even beginners can invest! Investing can be a smart financial choice, and it could help you increase your wealth and feel more financially secure. While there are risks to investing, it's an idea that is worth exploring if you have financial goals that you want to achieve. Be sure to do thorough research, and don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone, or increase your financial literacy, to explore the many ways to invest your hard-earned money. And if you're not ready to start investing quite yet, challenging yourself to build your savings can also be a great place to begin.

COLOR your WORLD

Whether it’s our lush gardens and calming greenspace, the bonny blue of the Gulf, or the many other happy colors of the summer we love, there’s plenty of experiences to enjoy even during our hottest days. Here are just a few cool things you may want to explore during our dog days of summer*.

(*Did you know the ancient Greeks and Romans believed extreme heat and humidity caused men and dogs to be driven mad? Since the sweltering weather coincided with the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star, they believed that this star, the brightest of all stars, contributed to the extreme heat and they called this hottest time of year the Dog Days. The name Sirius stems from the Ancient Greek seirios, meaning scorching.)

Seeing the Invisible — An Immersive Exhibition

There’s so much to see at Selby Garden’s Historic Spanish Point campus, but something that’s really cool to experience is Seeing the Invisible, HSP’s most ambitious and expansive exhibition to date. It features contemporary artworks by dozens of international artists created by augmented reality (AR) technology which you view on your tablet or smartphone as you walk among the beautiful greenspaces of HSP.

Initiated by the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens and Outset

Contemporary Art Fund, the exhibition is the first of its kind to be developed as a collaboration among botanical gardens around the world.

You engage with this exhibition via an app designed for Seeing the Invisible which is downloadable on smartphones and tablets. Download the app in advance of going and be sure to arrive with a fully charged device and compatible headphones (several works in the exhibition include sound).

And if you can’t figure out how to do these things, bring your children or grandchildren along. They’ll have you all set in a flash, and they will love you even more for it. Selby.org

PARADISE IN

At Sarasota Bay Club, an array of activities from fun to educational help make retirement living some of the best years of your life.

“We’ll see you tomorrow for more fun.”

That’s what Joan McGarry, Lifestyle Director of Sarasota Bay Club (SBC), says to the smiling SBC residents at the end of each day before she heads home around 6 p.m.

A few years ago, while living in Pennsylvania and dreaming of moving to a warmer climate, McGarry would never have imagined she’d be planning events and activities for a vibrant and active luxury retirement community in beautiful Sarasota. Her background was in art museum education.

But when she saw the job opportunity for Lifestyle Director at Sarasota Bay Club come through her email, and the title read “Do You Want to Work in Paradise?”, it stopped her in her tracks. She thought, “Yes, I do.”

AUGUST 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE 53

But McGarry wasn’t sure if it made sense for her to take such a big leap. It took two more emails in her inbox, and she finally asked herself, “What have I got to lose?” McGarry wrote a detailed cover letter, polished up her resume, and applied for the position. She got a call the next day, interviewed soon after, and it wasn’t long before she was moving to Sarasota.

Today, she says there’s nothing else she would rather do.

McGarry starts each day the same way, with a peaceful four and a half-mile walk through her neighborhood, taking in the fresh morning air and sorting out all the plans she’s developing at Sarasota Bay Club in her mind. This has been her routine since she moved to Sarasota.

Once she starts her workday at 9:00 a.m., McGarry says she’s busy all day—but it’s a good kind of busy. With two buildings each 11 floors high and about 300 residents, McGarry is always working on finding a wide variety of activities, entertainment, and educational opportunities to engage everyone.

Keeping a close eye on what gets the most attendance and positive feedback, she spends a lot of time carefully planning the upcoming weeks and months at SBC.

54 SARASOTA SCENE | AUGUST 2023

“The calendar is completely full,” she says. “I can hardly fit anything else in, even if I tried.”

Some of the most popular events are Saturday Happy Hour, Superbowl Sunday, Earth Day, Afternoon Tea, Bastille Day, and the Kentucky Derby Party, which was a tradition before McGarry started working at Sarasota Bay Club.

There are also many one-time events that are a hit with the residents, like the Sunset on the Beach party, which was McGarry’s first planned event. Residents went all out with beach hats and gear, and a live band played beachthemed music.

“Whenever we have a special event planned, we build up the excitement by having other events that build up to it, like our hat making workshop for the Kentucky Derby,” she said.

McGarry and her colleague Kathleen Rhem introduced an Earth Day celebration two years ago. The festivities lasted an entire day and included a drum circle, healthy eats, arts and crafts, terrarium building workshops, music with steel drums, yoga, meditation, and animal presentations. It was such a “roaring success” that Earth Day is now scheduled as a recurring annual event. McGarry is playing with more themed, daylong, immersive experiences, and she says a spa and wellness day will be the next introduction.

Between all the themed festivities, McGarry knows the residents also look forward to the endless enrichment opportunities she schedules. These include education, special speakers, a science and tech club, and other enrichment activities.

She’s also responsible for scheduling live music bands for entertainment, which happens twice a week.

Recently, after Hurricane Ian, she began writing on different topics that are sent out in the weekly SBC schedule and newsletter. She often provides background information on upcoming programs and writes about different topics she thinks will be useful or entertaining.

“Residents tell me they appreciate what I’m writing about, and they’re learning that it’s important to be active, or spend time in nature.”

“Even though the newsletter writing is a lot of extra work, I have really come to love it. It’s fun for me to hear from folks that have read what I’ve written about,” she added.

AUGUST 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE 55

During her day, McGarry keeps tabs on all the programs, making sure they’re running smoothly. Exercise classes are in the mornings, so she makes sure all instructors are there. She checks on the speaker programs for the morning along with the afternoon enrichments. These usually include a variety of topics like art appreciation, and science and technology. There’s also an afternoon tea at 3 p.m. with live music.

McGarry splits her time between planning and overseeing events. Mondays are heavy administrative days. That’s when she primes everything for the week ahead. But most days, she’s on the go.

“I get a lot of exercise and I’m walking around the building a lot. It’s easy to get 10,000 steps in each day.”

Things start to wind down around 4:00 p.m. which is when McGarry heads back to her desk to catch up on things before the 5:30 dinner seating begins. She usually stays once a week for the live entertainment that goes on until around 9 p.m.

Although there are plenty of things to do at SBC, many residents head outside the campus to take advantage

of Sarasota’s vibrant arts, music, and entertainment scene. Some residents choose to drive themselves or use SBC’s provided transportation to get them to and from the orchestra, theater, the opera house, and other local venues.

“I’ve canvassed to see what the residents prefer when it comes to music,” McGarry said. “Far and away, it’s classical.”

So, classical is what she mostly plans for many of SBC’s music events. McGarry says they also enjoy jazz, so she incorporates that as well and she’s thankful there’s such a robust jazz scene from here to Tampa, making it easy to find entertainers.

It doesn’t take long to see that both staff and residents at Sarasota Bay Club love spending their days there.

“I can’t really speak to other luxury retirement communities because I’ve only experienced this one, but I think what makes us unique is our location. While SBC is on the water, residents don’t have to worry about getting on and off the Ringling Bridge,” she said. “The other is our diversity of programs.”

56 SARASOTA SCENE | AUGUST 2023

The residents appreciate what McGarry and the rest of the staff are doing to make things engaging and enjoyable for them.

“The most stunning thing about moving to SBC was the opportunity to connect with other residents and the staff,” resident Fern Jaffe said. “Imagine leaving your home, leaving family and friends, and walking into a new home, with no family and no friends there. Thanks to the lifestyle department, headed by Joan and assisted by Kathleen Rhem, this newbie felt welcome. Their exciting programs opened new doors for me and allowed me to contribute ideas.”

Resident Carole Scutt agrees.

“My life at SBC has been like living in a friendly, caring neighborhood. Added to that is the satisfaction and joy of having access to opportunities to enjoy a wide variety of entertainment.”

Residents Betty and Marvin Morse are also thrilled.

“As older retirees, relocating to SBC from Longboat Key was the perfect move for us to maintain an active social life…enhanced beyond expectations by the dynamic, enthusiastic, and imaginative leadership of the lifestyle department.”

Resident and retired science professor Tony Salatto is thankful for the stimulation and entertainment the programs provide.

“I have enjoyed the presentations in our Science and Technology Group,” he said. “The programs put on by the Lifestyle Department are addressed at enhancing cultural enjoyment so typical of the Sarasota area. Ranging from jazz and Broadway songs to symphonic and chamber music, SBC residents have regular high-quality concerts right here in our SBC auditorium.”

Despite her popularity at SBC, McGarry doesn’t take this appreciation for granted. She’s always working on the next big thing.

So, what’s next on her list of plans?

“I’m gearing up to start working on our 25th anniversary event,” she said. “It’s three years away, but it will be here before we know it. It’s in the back of my mind constantly, the color scheme, what to do for the entertainment, and everything else.”

And like everything else at Sarasota Bay Club, we’re sure honoring 25 years of great living, loving, and learning will be quite a spectacular celebration!

WHAT READING? ARE you

“Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it’s a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it’s a way of making contact with someone else’s imagination after a day that’s all too real.” —Nora

There’s no better time than summer vacation to pick up a good book. Your mind is clearer, you want to escape and wipe out thoughts of work and other challenges. With so many books to choose from, we asked Sarasotans to share some of their picks to make your choice a bit easier.

The Maid

“Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-yearold Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

A Clue -like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.”

The Covenant of Water

“A stunning and magisterial new epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala and following three generations of a family seeking the answers to a strange secret. Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. The family is part of a Christian community that traces itself to the time of the apostles, but times are shifting, and the matriarch of this family, known as Big Ammachi—literally “Big Mother”—will witness unthinkable changes at home and at large over the span of her extraordinary life. All of Verghese’s great gifts are on display in this new work: there are astonishing scenes of medical ingenuity, fantastic moments of humor, a surprising and deeply moving story, and characters imbued with the essence of life.

A shimmering evocation of a lost India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the hardships undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. It is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.”

Someone Else’s Shoes

“Nisha Cantor lives the globetrotting life of the seriously wealthy, until her husband announces a divorce and cuts her off. Nisha is determined to hang onto her glamorous life. But in the meantime, she must scramble to cope--she doesn’t even have the shoes she was, until a moment ago, standing in.

That’s because Sam Kemp – in the bleakest point of her life – has accidentally taken Nisha’s gym bag. But Sam hardly has time to worry about a lost gym bag--she’s struggling to keep herself and her family afloat. When she tries on Nisha’s six-inch high Christian Louboutin red crocodile shoes, the resulting jolt of confidence that makes her realize something must change—and that thing is herself.

Full of Jojo Moyes’ signature humor, brilliant storytelling, and warmth, Someone Else’s Shoes is a story about how just one little thing can suddenly change everything.”

The Food Explorer

In the nineteenth century, American meals were about subsistence, not enjoyment. But as a new century approached, appetites broadened, and David Fairchild, a young botanist with an insatiable lust to explore and experience the world, set out in search of foods that would enrich the American farmer and enchant the American eater.

Kale from Croatia, mangoes from India, and hops from Bavaria. Peaches from China, avocados from Chile, and pomegranates from Malta. Fairchild’s finds weren’t just limited to food: From Egypt he sent back a variety of cotton that revolutionized an industry, and via Japan he introduced the cherry blossom tree, forever brightening America’s capital. Along the way, he was arrested, caught diseases, and bargained with island tribes. But his culinary ambition came during a formative era, and through him, America transformed into the most diverse food system ever created.

Twice a Daughter

Julie is adopted. She is also a twin. Because their adoption was closed, she and her sister lack both a health history and their adoption papers—which becomes an issue for Julie when, at forty-eight years old, she finds herself facing several serious health issues.

To launch the probe into her closed adoption, Julie first needs the support of her sister. The twins talk things over, and make a pact: Julie will approach their adoptive parents for the adoption paperwork and investigate search options, and the sisters will split the costs involved in locating their birth relatives. But their adoptive parents aren’t happy that their daughters want to locate their birth parents—and that is only the first of many obstacles Julie will come up against as she digs into her background.

Julie’s search for her birth relatives spans years and involves a search agency, a PI, a confidential intermediary, a judge, an adoption agency, a social worker, and a genealogist. By journey’s end, what began as a simple desire for a family medical history has evolved into a complicated question that unearths secrets, lies, and family members that are literally right next door.

Charlie Murphy: The Iconoclastic Showman behind the Chicago Cubs

You don’t know the history of the Chicago Cubs until you know the story of Charles Webb Murphy, the ebullient and mercurial owner of this historic franchise from 1905 through 1914. Originally a sportswriter in Cincinnati, he joined the New York Giants front office as a press agent—the game’s first—in 1905. That season, hearing the Cubs were for sale, he secured a loan from Charles Taft, the older half-brother of the future president of the United States, to buy a majority share and become the team’s new owner. In his second full season, the Cubs won their first World Series. They won again in 1908, but soon thereafter Murphy’s unconventional style invited ill will from the owners, his own players, and the press, even while leading the team through their most successful period in team history.

In Charlie Murphy: The Iconoclastic Showman behind the Chicago Cubs , Jason Cannon explores Murphy’s life both on and off the field, painting a picture of his meteoric rise and precipitous downfall. Readers will get to know the real Murphy, not the simplified caricature created by his contemporaries that has too frequently been perpetuated through the years, but the whirling dervish who sent the sport of baseball spinning and elevated Chicago to the center of the baseball universe.

Going There

For more than forty years, Katie Couric has been an iconic presence in the media world. In her brutally honest, hilarious, heartbreaking memoir, she reveals what was going on behind the scenes of her sometimes tumultuous personal and professional life—a story she’s never shared, until now. Of the medium she loves, the one that made her a household name, she says, “Television can put you in a box; the flat-screen can flatten. On TV, you are larger than life but smaller, too. It is not the whole story, and it is not the whole me. This book is.”

Beginning in early childhood, Couric was inspired by her journalist father to pursue the career he loved but couldn’t afford to stay in. Balancing her vivacious, outgoing personality with her desire to be taken seriously, she overcame every obstacle in her way. Couric talks candidly about adjusting to sudden fame after her astonishing rise to co-anchor of the TODAY show, and guides us through the most momentous events and news stories of the era, to which she had a front-row seat.

Couric’s position as one of the leading lights of her profession was shadowed by the shock and trauma of losing her husband to stage 4 colon cancer when he was just 42, closely followed by the death of her sister Emily, just three years later. If you thought you knew Katie Couric, think again. Going There is the fast-paced, emotional, riveting story of a thoroughly modern woman, whose journey took her from humble origins to superstardom. In these pages, you will find a friend, a confidante, a role model, a survivor whose lessons about life will enrich your own.

In 1972, when Brother William Geneen was visiting Sarasota, he found something that didn’t sit well with him. In fact, it bothered him so much, he couldn’t stop thinking about it on his plane ride back home.

Geneen was a Holy Cross brother, and a headmaster at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio, a private boys’ school operated by the Brothers of the Holy Cross Order. He was in Sarasota on a recruiting trip for students, and while here, he met many retirees.

Geneen asked them how they were enjoying retirement and they all shared very similar stories. They had moved here to retire, but after a serious illness or losing their spouse, they felt lonely and isolated.

Geneen wrote the words “lonely” and “isolated” on a notepad and circled them as he was on his journey back

home. His awareness that older people were struggling with a heavy burden made him determined to do something about it.

He went to the head of his order, got permission to move forward with his plan, loaded a typewriter, and drove back to Sarasota in his station wagon with his ideas to stop loneliness in seniors and give them purpose again.

Geneen’s idea was to provide a central gathering place where seniors could enjoy social connections, experience brain stimulating activities, get healthy meals and nutrition, and take part in exercise classes and fun entertainment events.

The response from the senior community in Sarasota was overwhelmingly positive. At their first gathering, before

66 SARASOTA SCENE | AUGUST 2023

the center was even formed, about 450 people showed up. This both surprised and confirmed to Geneen how many of the elderly in the community were starved for connection and friendship.

With just $79 in available funds, Geneen joined forces with Sarasota retiree Molleen Pust, who was instrumental in the success of the organization, and became its co-founder and first volunteer. A Board of Governors was formed, and in 1973, the first Senior Friendship Center opened in Sarasota.

Because Geneen envisioned more than one senior center, he insisted that an “s” be put on the end of the name, making the organization’s official name Senior Friendship Centers.

Though he’s no longer with us, Erin McLeod, President and CEO of Senior Friendship Centers, knew Brother Geneen well and remembers him fondly. She worked with him when she started at the Senior Friendship Centers in 2004 and stayed in contact with him until he passed away in 2011.

“He was a very quiet person. He loved building and planning—he probably loved Monopoly,” she remembers, holding up a picture of him. “I asked him once what his secret sauce was, and he said every day, he gave his job away. If someone offered to make the coffee one day, he asked them if they could do it every day at 9 a.m. That’s how he recruited volunteers. He coined the motto for our organization: People helping People.”

After taking on the torch from Bob Carter, the CEO that preceded her, McLeod says she learns something new every day. As she talks, there’s a sparkle in her eye and a beaming, natural smile. Her joy and energy are contagious, and she shares a special connection with the many members that come in and out the door of Senior Friendship Centers each day.

“We’ve had four-star generals here, a woman with both a medical degree and a law degree and she practiced both, and a man who was in the Enola Gay B-29 bomber plane

Brother William Geneen Molleen Pust

in World War II,” McLeod said. “And there are multimillionaires sitting across the table from borderline homeless seniors. No one cares what your background is, they just enjoy each other’s company.”

The NIH (National Institutes of Health) reported in 2019 that 28 percent of older adults live alone, and it’s even more today as the 55 and older population increases with each year. That equates to about 13.8 million seniors, many of whom struggle with loneliness after the death of a spouse or partner. Limited mobility, no access to transportation, and separation from family often exacerbate the situation.

Social isolation and loneliness are also strong contributors to declining health, with recent data from the National Library of Medicine showing decreased cognitive function in older adults after four years of social isolation and prolonged feelings of loneliness. In addition, a leading researcher recently found that loneliness can be deadly, raising the potential risk of mortality by 50 percent.

Added to this alarming data is the general attitude toward aging adults in the United States. McLeod says

ageism is one of the “isms” that’s often allowed and ignored. She is working to change that.

“We live in a culture that is so youth-obsessed,” McLeod said. “And we’re constantly being told that if we aren’t young, we don’t matter. That’s the total opposite of what we preach around here. You step into the fullness of life as you age, and you become more yourself.”

She’s thankful the Senior Friendship Centers are a voice for the often-discarded aging community.

“Instead of letting a society tell us that we don’t matter, we actually step up and say ‘Oh, excuse me, but we actually believe that seniors do matter.’”

Today, with 450 active volunteers, the Senior Friendship Centers serves approximately 10,000 seniors in four counties of Southwest Florida: Sarasota, Charlotte, DeSoto, and Lee. This includes programs, services, outreach, and lifelong learning. In addition, meals are delivered to homes through Friendship at Home, a program McLeod calls a crisis intervention program that matches volunteers to someone who’s isolated or homebound. Many are also struggling financially, and

68 SARASOTA SCENE | AUGUST 2023 • insi D e R •

this program helps with food costs by providing tasty and nutritious meals for free.

Seniors with available transportation who are struggling with financial strain can also come to the Senior Friendship Center and get nourishing meals at no cost.

The Senior Friendship Centers Adult Day programs are also a huge benefit to family members who are caregivers for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, or anyone struggling with the frailties of aging. They provide a welcome break during the day and the peace of mind of knowing Mom, Dad, or a loved one is getting the care they need.

McLeod gets positive feedback from members on a regular basis. Many tell her they don’t know how they managed before they started coming to Senior Friendship Centers. She says volunteering is often the first step to introduce them to the centers, and then over time they become members.

“As many other people who have lived in Sarasota for many years, I knew this senior center existed, but did not know how valuable it is to so many people in our community,” said volunteer Howard Scheckner.

1973

According to Scheckner, “I thought the older people who came here just wanted to pass some time away from home or give a family member a break from supporting their needs. Wow was I wrong. I feel that the warm, welcoming, and optimistic energy Erin McLeod projected in that first contact was exactly what I find exists every minute of the day at the center. You immediately feel this welcoming energy when you enter through the front door.”

Cathy Lenglois is a volunteer who became a staff member. She and her husband are both active retired seniors and Sarasota residents.

“This organization is one of the best-kept secrets in Sarasota County. What I like most is there is something for everyone here from playing cards to lunch, to language classes and social engaging activities like dancing and pickleball.”

Ed, a Senior Friendship Centers member, shares how the centers have helped him.

“When my wife passed away, I didn’t do anything. I hated the world,” he said. “After joining Senior Friendship Centers, my health got ten times better. I come five days a week and the people here helped me recover from my double knee surgery.”

Brother Geneen and Molleen,

McLeod says some of the most popular programs are pickleball, as well as live music with dancing. Pet therapy is also incorporated into their programs. A recent scene of a well-attended balance class included many happy faces and a giant live fluffy white llama on the floor, right in the middle of it all. “Yes, that’s a llama you see on the floor amongst the balance class!” McLeod remarked.

According to McLeod, many of their most active and vibrant members today had once walked in reluctantly holding the hand of an adult daughter or son.

“Within a month, the men have shaved, and women walk in with a haircut and lipstick on. They’ve got a new lease on life.”

As volunteer Howard Scheckner shared, paraphrasing a quote from Woody Allen: “99% of success is showing up.”

Membership at Senior Friendship Centers is just $125 a year, and scholarships are available for those in need. McLeod says the center is always looking for more volunteers and donors.

PINES OF SARASOTA: INVESTING IN CARE GIVING

Pines of Sarasota will hit a major milestone this year when it celebrates 75 years of providing care for seniors in need of assisted living, long-term care, and rehabilitation services. And as it honors its important past, it looks to exceptional care-giver training and community support as vital keys to its future success.

As one of the oldest established not-for-profit rehabilitation and senior care communities in the Sarasota-Bradenton region, Pines of Sarasota is known in the community for quality care, its strong emphasis on educational outreach, and for helping the elderly who are in poor health and have limited income.

Though Pines of Sarasota has changed a lot since its early beginnings in 1948, the Pines mission is still the same. They offer individuals a fulfilling life in a rehabilitation and senior care community that satisfies their health and lifestyle needs, all with the confidence of knowing they will always be secure, well-cared for, and welcomed.

This is something Pines of Sarasota CEO Mike Ward is proud of. He grew up in a family that was involved in long-term care; his mother was a nurse director, and his father was a long-term care administrator.

“I’ve always had a passion for working with seniors,” Ward said. “It was something we always did in our family.”

Not only did Ward’s parents work in long-term care until they retired, but his brother is also a retired administrator, and his son is a licensed nursing home administrator. “The person who trained me when I got out of college was the same person my dad trained,” Ward added.

“My parents felt that caregiver training was an important part of long-term care. My mother started a CNA (certified Nursing Assistant) education program back in the ‘70s and my father was right there by her side. They helped each other, and together they had a strong work ethic, commitment to quality, and recognized the importance of taking care of seniors.”

That’s why Ward, along with the Board of Directors and staff at Pines believe their Education Institute for CNAs is so vital. This not only gives them the ability to continually meet the needs of the residents at Pines, but it also provides career opportunities for those in the community who want to get into the field of nursing.

With an ever-increasing population of seniors moving into assisted living, memory care, and rehabilitation

centers, CNAs have become the lifeblood of long-term care facilities.

“I really enjoyed my time in the CNA training program,” Taneisha Mosley, a CNA and Training Mentor at Pines said. “I appreciate that Pines gives us that step-up to help us further our careers. There’s no other skilled nursing program that invests in their colleagues the way that Pines of Sarasota does.”

Zena Hillabrand, a PCA (Personal Care Attendant) agrees.

“I love that the program trains you in the facility you’ll actually be working in. It helps to build your confidence because you become part of the team,” she said. “The teachers and mentors are great resources along the way, helping to guide us and set us up to be great CNAs.”

The PCA position was created during the pandemic in response to nationwide staffing shortages in healthcare. Though it was intended to be temporary, the position has continued even after the pandemic. Ward says it’s been a great opportunity for those in the community to find out what it’s like working in healthcare at Pines, despite having no prior experience.

“Many have worked in retail or a non-medical environment, and this is a way for them to get their foot in the door,” Ward said. “We’ve been very successful in recruiting people into our PCA program. Right now, we have six students, and we turn that classroom over every three weeks.”

While training to be a PCA, students are also training to be a CNA at the same time, since the PCA position is only meant to be a transitory role. One of the most exciting things about these training sessions is that they’re offered by Pines of Sarasota for free. The prep course, student manual, state exam, as well as background checks are all covered by Pines. PCAs also have a CNA mentor working with them while they’re training to be a CNA.

In addition to the CNA program, Pines also offers an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) program in conjunction with Suncoast Technical Institute and the clinical aspect is performed at the Pines campus. Participants must already be working as CNAs at Pines to enroll. LPN students take part in rounds with unit managers and wound care social services, floor nurses, and admissions, as well as gaining valuable experience through clinical rotations.

Clinical Educator Kim Cuavers DNP/RN is the instructor of the PCA, CNA, and LPN programs.

“I am privileged to work for Pines of Sarasota and have been given an opportunity to spread my knowledge of nursing to the students here,” she said.

Having just added a state-of-the-art building in February of 2022, Pines is also able to offer many unique benefits to both employees and residents. They are one of the few long-term care facilities that also supplies childcare onsite for PCA and CNA students. Currently, they care for about 50 kids, including children from the community, as well as children of Pines employees. This brings an added benefit for intergenerational activities enjoyed with residents.

“I think when you do everything you can to take care of your employees, they turn around and take great care of the residents,” Ward said.

Another unique offering is their memory-care facility, which houses 20 private rooms. The indoor atrium is climate controlled and designed to look and feel like a peaceful,

AUGUST 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE 73
• insi D e R •

outdoor, park-like setting. Residents are comforted with surroundings that include trees, hanging flower baskets, and a ceiling of glass that reveals a blue sky. A sidewalk path with lamp posts meanders past sensory carts designed specifically for the residents. Though it gives a feeling of being outdoors, the memory care facility is a secured and safe environment. Residents have the freedom to safely explore and enjoy their surroundings.

This is all part of Pines honoring the dignity of their residents while providing for their needs.

“When it comes to dignity, I think we do a pretty good job with that,” Ward said. “It’s not just something we should do; we see it as a right for both our residents and our staff. It’s about being treated the way you want to be treated.”

Many may not be aware that more than half of the residents at Pines of Sarasota are on Medicaid assistance, and their long-term care isn’t completely covered. Each year, costs of care come up short. That’s where donors to the Pines of Sarasota Mission Fund come in. Donations go to help seniors in skilled nursing who have outlived their financial resources.

As far as goals for the future, Ward says he is thankful that their new building provides options to the Sarasota community for a safe and welcoming home for seniors who need rehabilitation, long-term care, assisted living, and memory care. With private suites, including full baths, a unique memory care unit, two floors of therapy gyms, and plenty of outdoor space to enjoy in the courtyard, there is much to offer at Pines of Sarasota.

And although having such a wonderful new space for residents is exciting, Pines leadership recognizes the important role their caregivers play in quality resident care. That’s why the education program is so vital to continuing Pines’ legacy of exceptional care for seniors in our community.

meet the artist Janet miShner

Janet Mishner, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, taught art in elementary school until she had the first of three children. When they all had entered school, she expanded her education in fine art in two unconventional ways. First, she became a docent for the Baltimore Museum of Art, where she went to learn her “heritage as an artist.” This experience included meeting many international artists including Cindy Sherman and Richard Serra who visited the museum when their work was exhibited and spoke to the docents. After four years of what she has called the “equivalent of a Master’s Degree in Art History,” she felt it was time to begin her own career as an artist. Mishner’s mother, a painter, recommended the wellknown abstract artist and teacher Gladys Goldstein who will “teach you about color,” when she was asked by her daughter to recommend the best in depth fine art instruction.

Upon moving to Sarasota in 2002, Mishner became active at Art Center Sarasota and eventually in the Women Contemporary Artists. Several years later she was invited to join the prestigious and historical professional women painters’ group Petticoat Painters. She continues to be active in both organizations. Six years ago, she rented a studio in the Northgate Business Park, where she works today, sharing a spacious, high ceiling, light filled studio with artist Linda Richichi.

Her work is in private and public collections including Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Florida Cancer Specialists, and the United States Embassy in Manilla. She has participated in many group shows and solo exhibitions, most recently at her Sarasota gallery, Art Uptown. She works in both figurative and abstract modes. Her most recent series of abstract paintings, “Connection v. Isolation/Grids” was inspired by her experiences during the pandemic.

“I have often thought about the conflict between the human need for socialization and intimacy and the imperative for isolating and distancing during Covid. I found the way to express this idea was through use of a grid, and that’s how I began the series.” Her paintings range in size 30 inches square to 5 feet square. More of her work can be found at her website, www.janetmishner.com.

SCENES FROM THE PAST

Louise Harrison passed away at 91 in January of this year at a Sarasota nursing home. She lived in in our area for several years. Just knowing that the sister of rock royalty was living in our midst made Scene contributing writer Gus Mollasis want to know more. Gus had the pleasure of interviewing Louise for our April 2014 issue and she shared some scenes from her life with her famous bro.

Not surprisingly, many people today think that her kid brother’s band was the biggest and best band ever in the history of pop music. Many yesterdays ago, she had a hunch that their sound truly was different. Long before most anyone else ever heard of the Beatles, she did what any good sister would do for a kid brother who had big talent and a bigger dream. She tried to get him a break. She called, visited and pleaded with American radio stations to give her brother George, and his mates, John, Paul and Ringo, some air play. Even while their singles were climbing the charts in England, their fame had not yet arrived in America. Soon that would change. Today, most everyone old enough to remember knows exactly where they were when the Beatles per formed on The Ed Sullivan Show. Louise Harrison remembers it well recalling the night she played Florence Nightingale to her ailing little brother George as he gutted his way through some tunes before 73 million viewers and made music history. Her long and winding road hasn’t always been easy, but it has been filled with much joy and for that she is grateful. Even at 82, there’s something in her eyes that still reminds you of a young lass from Liverpool, and something in her spirit that soothes you when you talk with her. Today she’s as busy as ever with a new book coming out titled, My Kid Brother’s Band: AKA-The Beatles, while she manages the Legends of Liverpool, a Beatles tribute band, currently playing in Branson, Missouri. Recently, as I sat down with Louise Harrison, I heard George’s voice over what I thought was the sound of a faint guitar not gently weeping, but instead smiling and laughing with joy, as we took a look at some scenes from an interview of her life.
