I am sure there aren’t many other communities around our nation with the compassion and giving spirit of Sarasotans. I am so proud to live among so many people who are grateful for their own blessings and who give so generously during both good and challenging times. And when it comes to deciding where to gift their generosity, I am equally proud that we boast a wealth of charitable organizations that make a tremendous, positive difference across our area. These organizations all serve our community in different ways, and all are vitally important to keeping our community strong, happy, and productive. Within each organization, there is a paramount cause, a mission, a goal, and along with that cause are people with dreams and wishes. In this issue, if you’re looking to make a dream come true, look no further than our NonProfit Wish List. We feature several important organizations with very real yet modest needs. These wish lists will hopefully make it easy for you to help the organization not only fulfill its mission and help those it serves, but you have the peace and happiness of knowing you helped make a dream come true for someone in need. Speaking of dreams, there is one woman in town whose dream we can all get behind— Graci McGillicuddy. Her dream to end the intergenerational cycle of child abuse has brought attention to this important issue which cannot be ignored. “Graci’s Dream” is our Spotlight article this month. Her crusade has spanned nearly 40 years, but as she will tell you, there is still much work to be done. With her All Star Children’s Foundation, Graci has created a happy and peaceful campus that is becoming the gold standard for children who have experienced trauma, and where dedicated foster parents can receive training. I encourage you to take a tour of the campus and help make Graci’s dream come true. Also in this issue, we feature two couples who have given so generously of their time, talent, and treasure. These are the Flanagans, who have helped various organizations through their philanthropy with Community Foundation of Sarasota County, and Jan Sirota and Allison Gardner, who are passionate about the work of The Sarasota Ballet. We also cover the global reach of what is undoubtedly one of our most important nonprofits—Mote Marine. Its work is not only so important to our local living, but its research also has world-wide benefits as well. Another important organization, Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, has had to deal with a lot these days, but this has not stopped them from realizing several dreams. These included the opening of the Larry Greenspon Campus for Jewish Life, Camp Yonnie, a long-awaited day camp for children of all faiths and backgrounds, and the Morganroth Event Center, featuring The Ora, Sarasota’s newest venue with flex space to host up to 1,000 people. Manatee Performing Arts continues to make dreams come true with another season of incredible performances. You can read all about MPACs exciting season in this issue. Our monthly education features another terrific nonprofit—Embracing Our Differences. It’s annual showcase of art that “embraces our differences” will once 12

again grace Bayfront Park from January 21, 2024, through April 14, 2024. The talent on display and statement these works make are incredible. In last month’s issue, we provided a social season calendar of galas and important events. I can personally tell you this season has kicked off with great fanfare. Several organizations have reached new heights and newer organizations are making a splash. Women’s and children’s issues have topped the start of the season with these events covering a myriad of serious topics, yet they were a lot of fun. In the last month or so, I’ve attended the first season events for Children’s First, SPARCC, WBTT, USF Sarasota-Manatee, Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Sarasota Opera, Asolo Rep, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Selby Gardens, Sarasota Orchestra, Easterseals, All-Star Children’s Foundation, Sarasota Art Museum, Ringling Museum, and other receptions. Can you believe this is only the start of season! Throughout its history, Sarasota Scene has always been a stalwart supporter of local nonprofits. Our partnerships include a working relationship with over 100 nonprofits and foundations. We take pride in supporting these organizations and being an advocate. It is no wonder that many local philanthropists, arts and culture enthusiasts, and human service organization champions read Sarasota Scene. We provide much of the content they seek. In turn, I am grateful for the support the community gives Sarasota Scene and encourage our readership to remain active, generous and have a great time this season. I recently attended the inaugural gala of Kind I Am, a relatively new organization. Its focus is on human trafficking and those who are trapped in dangerous relationships. The organization will also add a wearable technology component that provides the wearer a notification outlet of their current level of good or bad stress. The devices can be set to send out a notification to the individuals’ support network allowing for immediate intervention. Lastly, as I wrote about in my September letter, I would like to remind you that tickets are now on sale for Sarasota Opera’s Lucia di Lammermoor. Opening night is February 24, 2024. This is the night we will celebrate Sarasota’s Scottish heritage. Some men will dress in kilts and some women will don the traditional draped earasid as a sash or draped skirt. While it is not required, it is fun to do! Scene will be photographing those in traditional Scottish dress so you may be featured in the magazine! Dig out your best and wildest outfits and make the Scene this year. It is going to be a wild one.

The entertainment featured emcees David and Meredith from WSRZ/iHeart Radio and the Miami-based band Private Stock. In addition to community guests, over Kristiana Serbin & Sheryl Vieira 60 physicians attended and more than 70 SMH and community volunteers were also on hand to help make the event a success. Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center’s annual black-tie gala, SPARCCle in the Garden, was held at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. The weather was perfect, the scenery was spectacular, and the event was overflowing with love and support for the organization and for all it serves. Guests enjoyed an entertaining auctioneer and live music, gourmet food, and an evening that exuded a magical ambiance. The event, which was co-chaired by dedicated supporters Cathy Bachand, JoAnn Heisen, Bonnie McIntyre, Kimberley Pelyk, and Sue Wilson, was a resounding success, contributing significantly to SPARCC’s mission of providing a safe haven and promoting empowerment to end domestic and sexual violence.

The 29th Brunch on the Bay, the marquee fundraising event for the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, raised $465,000 for student scholarships, campus expansion and other initiatives. A sold-out crowd gathered on campus in the shadow of a new $42.3 million, 100,000-square-foot student center and residence hall under construction, and enjoyed fine dining from local restaurants and catering companies. USF President Rhea Law and SarasotaManatee Regional Chancellor Karen Holbrook gave updates on growth and future plans.

CONSERVATION FOUNDATION RECEPTION Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast held its “Annual Conservation Reception” in celebration of its 20th anniversary and honored local philanthropists Richard “Dick” and Cornelia Matson with a Lifetime Impact Award. How To Change Your Money Mindset While it’s true that money can’t buy you happiness, it can definitely help you feel security and power. Not only that, but money can make certain aspects of your life much easier. To get the most out of your money, you need to develop a strong and healthy money mindset. What Is Money Mindset? Your money mindset is your attitude and unique set of beliefs about money. It drives your decisions about handling money, whether it’s saving or spending. If you want to have a healthy money mindset, you should believe that: • You have the freedom to spend, but you can also tell yourself ‘no’ to a purchase. • You don’t have to compare yourself or your financial situation to others. • It’s possible to achieve your money goals. • Finally, you enjoy helping others who are struggling by donating. Your money mindset basically shapes the way you feel about your finances, your attitude towards others who make more or less money than you, your ability to make smart investments, and more. Various factors influence your money mindset. However, you can shift your mindset at any time if you desire to. So let’s review five steps to change your mindset about money and get the most out of your finances. 5 Steps to Change Your Money Mindset 1. Accept Your Starting Point Your money mindset and how you approach your money decisions have been forming all your life long. So it shouldn’t be surprising that if you’ve had positive experiences with your finances, you’re more likely to have healthier money habits. And if you’ve had negative money-related experiences, you’re most likely to have poor financial habits. Either way, you should accept your starting point and focus on strengthening your money mindset. After all, the only thing you can take control of right now is the present. And that, in turn, can shape your future.
2. Focus on Abundance Over Scarcity If you’re like most people, you’re probably focusing on scarcity rather than abundance, and this can add some financial stress. Here’s how to change your money mindset from scarcity to abundance: • First, consistently reframe your everyday thoughts from “I can’t afford it” to find a solution to “how can I afford it.” • Next, while $50 probably won’t help much in a crisis, you could use that money to start an emergency fund and gradually build it up. Having an emergency fund will provide you with the security you need if any unexpected bills hit you. • Instead of thinking, “I can never afford a vacation to the Maldives,” start thinking: “A vacation to the Maldives has been on my bucket list for a long time. Let me start saving money so I can go there next year.” 3. Cut Emotional Spending The next best thing you can do to change your money mindset is to cut emotional spending. We often make money decisions depending on our emotions. For example, you might buy another piece of apparel if you see it on sale, even if you didn’t think of spending any more money on clothing that month. It’s best to self-reflect on why you make the purchases you do. What drives your spending? Is it retail therapy? 4. Educate Yourself About Money Getting financial education can significantly change your mindset and attitude towards money. This doesn’t mean that you must obtain a degree in finances. Instead, you can gain financial literacy by reading more books that teach you how to get the most out of your money. As an example, the popular book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki is an excellent starting point to educating yourself about money. 5. Create a Financial Plan Last but not least, having a financial plan in place can help you control your finances and give your money a reasonable direction. PUTTING THE
“fun” IN FUNDRAISING The Flanagans and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County By Kaileia Suvannamaccha • Photo by Nancy Guth
For these high school sweethearts, their love affair with Sarasota began in 1999. Former Chicago and Silicon Valley residents Tom and Nancy Flanagan visited this charming coastal city for vacation and fell in love with its vibrant arts community. They then discovered dedicated philanthropic allies like the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, which propelled them to make Sarasota their new home within just six months. It all began with a serendipitous encounter with Roxie Jerde, President and CEO of the Community Foundation, during a local event. They were immediately drawn to her enthusiasm and passion for the Foundation and the work it does to strengthen our community. “Roxie was brand new to the area and already had a firm grasp of the local landscape including the demographics, issues, and needs of our diverse community. We could see the goodness in her, and her vision for Sarasota, and the power of partnerships really resonated with us,” says Nancy. “Knowing Roxie was at the helm attracted us to want to work with them.”
Running Towards a Dream In 2017, the Flanagans created a scholarship fund to support high school runners, an endeavor inspired by Tom’s experience as a former high school cross country coach in Chicago. The scholarship program aids high school runners, generally a male and a female, prioritizing those with at least one year of financial need. The Community Foundation’s motto, “Be the One,” aligns with the Flanagans’ commitment to impacting individual lives. Their scholarships make a profound difference to the students who receive them, opening doors to higher education and brighter futures for talented youth who might otherwise not have had access to them. The Flanagans’ initial goal was to provide a one-time scholarship to freshmen. However, the Community Foundation provided valuable guidance that led to a more sustainable approach. They decided to divide the scholarships into four parts, disbursing funds to the students each fall semester to provide ongoing support.

foundation itself. Meetings with the philanthropy team have combined shared interests and hobbies with discussions of their vision for their philanthropic impact.
They learned that for first-generation college students, there isn’t a road map. Put simply, getting to college is one accomplishment; staying in through graduation is a different matter for many students, particularly those who do not have parents with college degrees. Realizing the impact they could have, not just for the scholarship recipients, but for generations that follow, has been a gratifying experience for the Flanagans.
It’s meant sharing coffee and conversations with Community Foundation team members that have allowed the relationship to develop beyond the transactional. One time, a meeting with an advisor was conducted during a run over the Ringling Causeway.
“Every year, usually right around winter break, the Foundation arranges a luncheon for us to meet with our recipients,” says Tom. “It’s one of the highlights of the year for us. We just love the fact that we can sit down and talk with these young people about their aspirations, their educational goals, their life, and what they want to accomplish. That was one of the things we really liked about the Foundation, that we actually get to see the impact we’re having.” From two recipients that first year, the number of students whose lives the Flanagans are touching has grown. “We currently have eight students, and when you sit down and talk to them, you have no doubt,” he adds. “They’re goal oriented. They’re going to stay in school, and they’re going to graduate.” Their scholarships have already borne fruit, with several students graduating and pursuing careers in their chosen fields. One is now in graduate school, an opportunity made possible through the Flanagans’ scholarship fund. One aspect the Flanagans appreciate about the Community Foundation is the connections they make, both with recipients of their philanthropy and with the staff at the

“It was very fun,” Tom says. “It was different, and I think that also bonded us, and continues to tie us to the Community Foundation even more because they are open, willing to be a little flexible, and to do things a little differently.” Opportunity Galore The Flanagans are working to ensure their assets continue to impact the lives of those in need as a part of their legacy. The couple have recently set up another fund called The Nancy and Tom Flanagan Giving Back Fund, which will be administered by the Community Foundation. This endowment will support social services within the community, adapting to the evolving needs of Sarasota over the years. “The sky’s the limit,” Nancy says. “We have such great confidence in the Community Foundation and having them be stewards of our legacy is very comforting.” Both Tom and Nancy are fully engaged in helping groups and individuals in their community. They embrace an active retirement lifestyle and are committed to staying involved through a myriad of philanthropic endeavors. “There’s plenty of opportunity in Sarasota,” Tom says. Tom and Nancy’s engagement with the local community goes beyond their scholarships and donations.

Nancy serves on the Board of Trustees at the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, where her vantage point has enabled her to witness the ways that the Community Foundation partners with local nonprofits. Community Foundation support has been integral in helping WBTT to expand its reach and spotlight its mission within the community.
Sharing Community Spirit The Flanagans emphasize that one doesn’t need to make large donations to have meaningful impact. “You just have to find the right passion or find the right cause that you feel passionate about. The Community Foundation is great at matching people with the right causes,” Nancy says.
Tom’s involvement with Meals on Wheels Sarasota further highlights the couple’s dedication to making a difference in the lives of those in need. He serves on its board of directors and is dedicated to delivering nutritious meals to homebound individuals who have difficulty preparing their own food.
The Flanagans’ story embodies the generosity and community spirit that defines Sarasota. Through partnerships with organizations like the Community Foundation, Tom and Nancy hope to inspire others to join them in building an even more fun and vibrant city, one act of kindness at a time.
Additionally, the Flanagans’ collaborative efforts between Meals on Wheels Sarasota and the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe have been instrumental in creating unique and impactful fundraising opportunities.
Or, to put it as Nancy did: “Sarasota is growing, and its needs are growing as well. If more people can get involved on any level, it can make a huge difference.”
As Nancy recalls, “To help with a fundraising luncheon for Meals on Wheels Sarasota, we reached out to the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe to provide entertainment. It was a huge success and showcased how both organizations could work together to create a fundraising event that was inspiring, entertaining, as well as effective financially.”

In a philanthropic landscape teeming with charitable endeavors, The Sarasota Ballet continues to take hold of the hearts of its generous donors, including Jan Sirota and Alison Gardner. A World Class Performance Jan Sirota, originally from New York, had attended performances at prestigious institutions like the American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet, and therefore, held high standards for ballet. It wasn’t until he met Alison that he even considered attending one of The Sarasota Ballet’s world-class performances. “I was shockingly surprised at how great they were,” he recalls. The surprise he felt at the exceptional quality of its performances challenged every preconceived notion he had about ballet in smaller cities. “If I were to imagine who danced in Sarasota when I lived in New York, it wouldn’t be the caliber of dancers we find here. But they are every bit as good, with every bit as rich a teaching history.” Alison Gardner, also from New York, brought her own deep-rooted connection to ballet. She fondly remembered her early experiences with the art form, saying “What little girl doesn’t love The Nutcracker?”
A childhood fascination with ballet led her to take Cecchetti lessons, providing her with a unique perspective on the intricate nature of each step and movement, including their difficulties. Alison’s early exposure to the world of ballet cultivated a deep appreciation for the dance. A Partnership in the Making Jan’s personal mission to become the support system he wished he had during his youth has been a driving force in his life. Little did he know, his involvement with an organization called Take Stock in Children would play a pivotal role in his path to The Sarasota Ballet. Through Take Stock, Jan provided mentorship to underprivileged high school students through weekly visits. At the time, two of his mentees were participants in The Sarasota Ballet’s “Dance - The Next Generation” (DNG) program. DNG is a youth education program offered by The Sarasota Ballet, catering to underserved children in grades 3-12. The program provides a comprehensive, tuition-free dance education and includes personal and professional guidance and support for young talents. “They really give them a lot of poise, and discipline—all the kinds of things I wish I had when I was that age,” he says. Jan saw the potential for these aspiring dancers to benefit not only from DNG but also from Take Stock in DECEMBER 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE

“THE BALLET IS A PRESENCE, BUT IT IS ALSO AN EDUCATOR, AND A MENTOR.” Children, which offered pre-paid scholarships to in-state colleges. His innovative idea to unite the two programs was met with enthusiasm by Iain Webb, the director of The Sarasota Ballet, who immediately set up an event at Asolo Repertory Theatre, where they introduced others to the important work these organizations were doing. “Since that night, I have really been indebted to Iain Webb and his view on underprivileged kids,” Jan emphasizes. “He is beyond willing. That was probably the most instrumental thing that sold me on The Sarasota Ballet—not just the dance, but the whole organization— the people.” Alison adds, “The ballet is a presence, but it is also an educator, and a mentor. Even in a large arena like the Van Wezel, the distance between the audience and the dancers is never very great.” Diversity and Distinction The couple take great pride in discussing The Sarasota Ballet’s ever-expanding repertoire. They appreciate its versatility, with offerings ranging from classical pieces like “Giselle” to more contemporary and innovative performances, such as those choreographed by Ricardo Graziano. Jan and Alison also acknowledge the Ballet’s impressive international presence and recognition. including invitations to prestigious venues like Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, and Jacob’s Pillow. They’re particularly thrilled about the company’s upcoming performance at the Royal Ballet in London next year. “Iain and Margaret’s choice to make Sir Frederick Ashton’s choreography Sarasota’s niche has resulted in loans of costumes, sets, and scores from around the world, as well as cooperation from the Balanchine Trust,” says Alison.

Margaret is Margaret Barbieri, a world-renowned Prima Ballerina with The Royal Ballet, and Assistant Director of The Sarasota Ballet. “It appeals to many more in the audience than you would ever think,” Jan adds. “And they’re doing a really good job in coming up with a diversity of programs that keep you interested.” Both Jan and Alison speak fondly about the various events at The Sarasota Ballet where they can interact with the dancers, form personal connections, and gain a deeper understanding of the Ballet’s mission. Alison notes that the organization not only takes care of the dancers but also the staff, donors, and local community. “It’s a wonderful model for a philanthropy in Sarasota that is rife with non-profit organizations vying for dollars.” A Shared Passion for Enrichment Jan and Alison’s journey with The Sarasota Ballet is shaped by their passion for supporting a cultural institution that ultimately brings more joy into their lives. For Jan, it’s the artistic synergy of music and movement that makes ballet truly unique. He views ballet as a blend of athleticism and storytelling, offering a diverse range of experiences, from traditional story ballets to contemporary works. The opportunity for dancers to also choreograph is something Jan deeply admires and believes sets The Sarasota Ballet apart from other studios. Alison’s connection to ballet has been nurtured by the ballet’s commitment to extending dancers’ careers beyond their time on the stage. She admires the dedication and skill of dancers who continue to pass on their knowledge and talent to the next generation, even after their own dancing careers have ended. The

mentorship and the focus on the legacy of dance deeply resonate with her. “To watch both Iain and Margaret, passing their skills on to the next generation, and the generations after that, is extraordinary,” she says. Jan and Alison’s vision and aspirations for the future are aligned with their passions. Serving on the Ballet Board, Jan is determined to expand the relationship between DNG and local schools, enhancing the lives of children who may not have yet had the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultural experiences such as dance. His legacy is one of empowerment and mentorship, creating a brighter future for the young talents he supports. Alison, on the other hand, finds her passion in contributing to the growth of the ballet’s finances. As a member of the Investment Committee, she brings her financial expertise to help the ballet’s funds grow, ensuring its long-term sustainability and expansion. Financial support from donors like Jan and Alison is what allows the ballet to continue thriving and making positive impact on the community. “I truly love supporting the things that give me joy,” says Alison. “I have about as much creative energy in my entire body as some of them have in their little fingers. So I feel like I’m an official appreciator, and I am more than glad to support such talented people.” Dancing for the Next Generation Jan Sirota and Alison Gardner have joined the Ballet’s Legacy Society, signifying their enduring dedication to the organization through their inclusion of the ballet in their estate plan. In the philanthropic hub that is Sarasota, The Sarasota Ballet stands out as a multifaceted cultural organization. Its commitment to community engagement, mentorship, and human development creates an environment that nurtures talent and brings people together in a way that only art can. Since he discovered the joys of theater in high school, Randell Johnson has become an active advocate of the arts. He believes strongly that philanthropy and handson involvement in an arts organization can combine to become a powerful force. Whether he is helping guide Asolo Rep to continued artistic and financial success as the chairman of its board or guiding tours to exotic destinations through his company, Randell’s Travel, he is making a difference around town and around the world.
You clearly have a passion for the arts. When did you first become interested and how has that driven your life and career choices? I have heard the old adage that “you don’t choose the arts – the arts choose you.” As a patron of the arts, I believe that we should choose those things in life that make us happy, and the arts make me happy, especially the performing arts. I grew up in a small town east of Nashville, Tennessee, and my exposure to art was mostly magazines and exhibitions at the local college.
In high school, I found the drama club and enjoyed working on the plays, usually behind the scenes. I had a minor acting role in my senior play and experienced the “bright lights” for the first time, and it changed how I saw myself, resulting in my joining the debate team. On my first visit to Manhattan, I saw my first Broadway show (a revival of No, No, Nannette, with Ruby Keeler, Hellen Gallagher and Patsy Kelly), and I was enthralled. On that same trip, I got a standing-room-only ticket for eight dollars to see a production that had just opened at Joseph Papp’s Public Theatre called A Chorus Line, with Priscilla Lopez and Robert Lupone, and I knew that theater would be a big part of my life — forever. Once I focused on my life through the theater lens, it was impossible to ignore its influence on my career decisions
because my college concentrations were in language and the arts. The theater is where I go to escape reality, to be filled with laughter, to be entertained with music and dance, and to learn more about my world through the story line in the plays. Some of the best psychologists in history have been playwrights. How do you see your role as board president in helping to guide and ensure the future of Asolo Rep? My role as president of the Asolo Rep board of directors plays out in many ways. I am a spokesperson, a meeting leader, a cheerleader, and sometimes a clerk. Most importantly, I am one person on a leadership team of board officers and committee chairs who collectively contribute to the growth and advancement of the organization.
Although the future is impossible to predict, we have set strategies to address the theater’s current and future needs. The Asolo is very lucky to have had great leaders and many patrons in the past who have brought the theater and the board of directors to the place it is today. The current successes of Asolo Rep are the result of their vision, planning and hard work. I hope that our work this year can continue that progress.

You and Bobby Jensen, your husband and business partner in Randell’s Travel, are longtime Asolo Rep supporters, helping to form OUT@AsoloRep, which connects LGBTQIA+ communities with great theater. Why do you believe that connection is important? Asolo Rep’s connection to any community population is to help it to be seen and understood. Whether it be the LGBTQIA+ community, a religious group or another minority population, it is important for all of us to come together at the Asolo and see that we have common interests and are more similar than we are different. Asolo Rep opens its doors to everyone who wants to enjoy good theater. Additionally, it is important to include new audiences to fulfill the theater’s belief in access, diversity and equality.
In 2009, Michael Donald Edwards, then Asolo Rep’s producing artistic director, started OUT@AsoloREP to encourage the LGBTQIA+ community’s continued involvement in the theater. OUT, as we now refer to it, is one of the most successful subscription series at the theater. It sells out early each year and has a waiting list for new subscriptions. Asolo Rep now has an IllumiNations Committee, made up of members of the Asolo board of directors and community volunteers, whose mission is to reach other disparate populations and invite them to be a part of the Asolo family. In 2021 you both pledged a gift to Asolo Rep’s Staging Our Future Capital Campaign, which was recognized with the naming of the Dr. Randell Johnson and Bobby Jensen Education Hallway at the Robert and Beverly Koski Center. Why did you choose to focus on the arts, and particularly Asolo Rep, for the focus of your philanthropy? Sarasota is a mecca for the performing arts. In addition to the opera, ballet, and symphony, there are many theater organizations which provide a wide variety of entertainment and productions. We enjoy them all. Asolo Rep is special to us for many reasons, but I will mention two of the major reasons.
First, we enjoy attending theater productions on Broadway in New York and the West End in London. Asolo Rep brings Broadway-quality productions to Sarasota by hiring award winning directors; set, costume and lighting designers; and accomplished Broadway actors. The result is Broadway-quality theater. The Asolo owns the Robert and Beverly Koski Production Center, which houses a super rehearsal hall named for Warren and Margo Coville. This state-of-the-art facility was designed so that the sets for productions are ready for the directors and actors on day one of rehearsals — which is unique to Asolo Rep. The Koski Center has future plans to include an expanded costume shop, offices, and education center. Bobby and I made our contribution to support this expansion.

Secondly, education is important to both of us. Although we both hold graduate degrees from Emory University, Bobby’s first two degrees are from Florida State University. So, it was natural for us to be drawn to the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, one of the top ten conservatories in the United States. This Master of Fine Arts Program is housed on the Asolo Campus and gives its graduate students the opportunity to work in all levels of theater, including acting in productions. At the end of the student’s second year in the program, the Asolo sends them to London for six weeks to be immersed in theater. This year, Bobby and I are helping to sponsor the classes and are contributing to the cost of the London Program. We get to know the graduate students, visit some of their classes, and encourage them when we attend their plays. We cherish the friendships we have made with students in this program, and we are still friends with many graduates. What are some of your other philanthropic interests? We have added to our giving list over the years and now give to several organizations. Some of these are educational programs, children’s physical and mental health programs, national health research, and human rights programs (which work to give all populations access to health care, equality, human dignity and quality of life). We monitor and modify our giving based upon the annual needs of the programs. What we give may be small in comparison to many, but like the “widow’s mite,” we give from the heart and give what we can.

Finally, what would you tell someone who wants to support the arts, but has limited funds, or perhaps doesn’t know where to start? Can anyone be a philanthropist? Anyone can be a philanthropist, and it doesn’t always require money. One of the most precious gifts we can give is our time. This is not a cliché, because every organization has a need for volunteers to make their programs and events run smoothly. Like most theaters, Asolo Rep has volunteers to usher at performances, to build theater patronage, and to sponsor special events in support of the theater.

Sarasota Garden Club (SGC) Preserving our gardens and our historic landmarks while promoting the environment, conservation, and civic beautification through education and programs. The history of the Sarasota Garden Club began on May 6, 1927 with Mrs. John Ringling as first President. After many years of planning and saving, the Garden center was built in 1959 on land leased from the City of Sarasota referred to as the Civic Center (Cultural District). It is now on The Bay Park on the corner of Blvd. of the Arts and 41. In 1937, SGC members work alongside Works Progress Administration to develop Bayfront Park and the Municipal Auditorium. In 1939 Japanese Lantern, gifted by Ralph and Ellen Caples in 1939. (Restored in 2014). In 1955, the City of Sarasota approved plans by Architect John Crowell, for SGC to build on City owned land between 10th Street and Boulevard of the Arts, 1131 Blvd. of the Arts

FULFILLING A The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is the hub of one of the fastest-growing Jewish communities in the United States and one of 146 members of The Jewish Federations of North America. The organization offers programming and events where Jews of all ages can connect and engage with their culture in a safe, secure environment, and it is focused on building the foundation of a strong and vibrant Jewish future in Sarasota-Manatee. After years of fundraising and careful planning, the Federation recently announced the opening of the Larry Greenspon Campus for Jewish Life and the first summer of Camp Yonnie, a long-awaited day camp for children of all faiths and backgrounds.

What is Camp Yonnie? About 15 years ago, the Jewish Community Center was not able to remain operational had to close its doors, and when it did, its popular summer camp closed along with it. Since then, committed board members have been carefully planning and crafting its return alongside the redevelopment of its 32-acre campus. With the help of very generous donors, the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is poised to host the inaugural summer of Camp Yonnie in 2024. “This has been a long-time goal, even before I came along,” says Shepard Englander, CEO. “When the plans for the entire campus were envisioned in 2019, bringing the camp back was a top priority. With a new pavilion and athletic fields, Camp Yonnie will be the proper day camp that the community needs.”
VISION Ron and Geri Yonover and their family stepped forward with a leadership donation to launch Camp Yonnie. “Ron and Geri asked a simple question: ‘What do you need most?’” says Hermione Gilpin, Chief Development Officer. “Shep and I looked at each other and immediately said ‘We need a day camp.’ The community has been asking for this since the Jewish Community Center closed. And that started a series of deep conversations about creating a place where kids of all faiths can get to know and understand each other’s differences, because that leads to a more civil society.” Marcy and Michael Klein, as well as the Stone Family Foundation, also made a significant contribution to fund the camp pavilion.
JEWISH FEDERATION OF SARASOTA-MANATEE BY TOM REESE “The Klein and Stone families knew from their personal histories of having gone to camp themselves, along with their children and grandchildren, that there needed to be a central gathering space,” says Gilpin. “The pavilion will set the tone for the camp and serve as the hub for the start and end of days, for plays and performances, activities for when it’s rainy outside, and so much more.” In its inaugural year, Camp Yonnie will be an abbreviated camp, with spaces for up to 100 children. Camp Yonnie 2024 will be open to kindergarten through 3rd-grade students for four weeks, broken down into two two-week sessions from July 8-19 and July 22-August 2, 2024. Camp hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with before and after-care options available, extending the potential camp day from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. In 2025, the plan is to extend Camp Yonnie to eight weeks to create a full-fledged summer camp.

“In Sarasota, we’re very fortunate to have specialty camps, like theater and arts camps, but there are very few generalpurpose camps that welcome kids of any background and are focused on general interests,” says Englander. “Those specialty camps are also often not over the course of a full day. So, our goal is to be a safe and educational solution with early drop-offs and late pickups for all kinds of busy families.” Attendees can expect traditional recreational day camp activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, outdoor play, and educational lessons, all inspired by traditional Jeiwsh values and Israeli culture while focusing on fostering lifelong skills through a different lens. The specific camp activities will be planned by a staff led by Youth & Family Engagement Coordinator, Shelly DeCesare. Shelly has a long history in youth education as a former principal of a middle school, as well as previous summer camps in the Sarasota area. “Because this is a full-range camp, kids will be able to find their passion and try things they’ve never done before,” says Englander. “They will build new lifelong friendships and meet kids from all different cultures and backgrounds.” The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee will be hiring and training counselors and staff for the camp of all ages,

including high school students and adults. Training will focus on areas of safety and the specific programs and activities that will be held throughout the duration of Camp Yonnie. Campus Redevelopment Beginning in 2019, the expansion to the campus, the Larry Greenspon Campus for Jewish Life, is nearing completion on McIntosh Road. The campus will fulfill a vital community need while aligning with one of the Federation’s primary goals: connecting Jews to Jewish life. The focus of the redevelopment project will be the front 16 acres of the 32-acre property. One of the major features of the new campus will be the Morganroth Event Center, featuring The Ora, Sarasota’s newest and most versatile event venue. The facility features state-of-the-art technology, acoustics, and lighting, with flexible spaces to host up to 1,000 people. The multi-use complex will also have nearly 400 well-lit parking spaces for ease of access and on-site security. The venue will welcome all members of the Sarasota community. Drs. Joel and Gail Morganroth have made a leadership contribution that ensured the successful completion of the campus. The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee Capital Campaign has now surpassed $27.5 million in total contributions since 2019.
David and Edie Chaifetz also made a leadership gift to establish the Chaifetz Holocaust Education Center and Memorial Path. Through experiential learning and evocative art installations, the memorial promotes awareness of the evils of hatred, antisemitism, and prejudice, and seeks to inspire understanding, compassion, and ethical behavior. Leading the Way in International Marine Science Diplomacy By Hallie Peilet Young Nestled along the tranquil shores of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Mote Marine Laboratory stands as a beacon of hope and innovation in the realm of marine science diplomacy. Beyond its idyllic coastal setting, Mote has taken on a mission of global significance, fostering international collaborations that cross the world’s oceans. Mote’s pioneering initiatives span nations like China, Chile, Korea, and Japan, each focused on diverse research endeavors. Their collective efforts have not only expanded our understanding of marine ecosystems but also led to groundbreaking developments in marine conservation.

MOTE’S EXPANSIVE REACH: A GLOBAL ODYSSEY Many think of Mote as just local to the Suncoast, but Mote has embarked on an extraordinary journey of global proportions. The laboratory’s reach extends far beyond its surroundings, encompassing an extensive network of research and educational partnerships worldwide. This commitment to global engagement has made Mote a cornerstone of international marine science diplomacy. Kevin Claridge, Vice President for Sponsored Research & Coastal Policy Programs at Mote, elaborates on the multifaceted nature of these collaborations. He highlights that international cooperation is not confined solely to research endeavors but is integral to all aspects of Mote’s operations, including research, education, and even their renowned aquarium. “You know it’s not just the research side of the house, but also, if you had to divide Mote into research, education, and maybe an aquarium, all three of those components have a strong international collaboration component,” Claridge said. He illustrates how the aquarium serves as a platform for showcasing international collaborations. Exhibits featuring Pacific marine life, for example, are designed in partnership with experts from Taiwan, emphasizing the holistic approach to cooperation that defines Mote’s mission. Most recent is his work on harmful algae blooms around the globe. On the Suncoast, we know Karenia brevis, also known as ‘Red Tide,’ all too well. We know it’s here when we get the stench of dead fish and a scratchy throat. For other countries, like Korea or Japan, it may look different. “It’s really a collaborative nature,” Claridge explains. “Science is not done in a vacuum. Some are a little further ahead on a topic; some are a little further behind. Some people are implementing different things in applied fashion.”

A GLOBAL TAPESTRY OF RESEARCH Along with Claridge’s U.S. Harmful Algal Bloom Control Technologies Incubator, an extensive tapestry of research collaborations contribute to our understanding of diverse marine ecosystems and their conservation. These collaborative efforts often transcend borders, uniting scientists from across the world to tackle shared challenges. One such initiative, led by Dr. Demian Chapman, Senior Scientist & Director at Mote’s Center for Shark Research, has made waves in the realm of shark conservation. Dr. Chapman heads the “Global FinPrint” project, which is the world’s largest shark survey, spanning 58 nations. The project has achieved significant milestones, including the establishment of new international trade regulations for these remarkable species.
Chapman explains, “The project was first funded in 2015 by Paul G. Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, through his family foundation. The inspiration came from a study with elephants, where planes were flown over different countries to tally the elephant population.” However, counting sharks from the air is not feasible. Instead, the project focuses on coral reef sharks, acting as a vital indicator for ocean health. By placing cameras with bait in front of them on coral reefs, the team counts the sharks that come into view. This approach provides valuable data, allowing researchers to compare shark populations in various regions and assess the impact of different management measures. The survey has revealed significant insights into the state of global shark populations. It found that the main reef shark species worldwide have declined by an average of 63% over three decades, classifying them as threatened with extinction. Some regions even showed an absence of sharks due to unregulated fishing practices. The project is now shifting its focus toward shark conservation, working with local researchers and fishers to improve management measures and stabilize shark populations. Chapman emphasizes the importance of these efforts. “It’s really about local grassroots conservation at the end of the day,” he said. “We want sharks to be robust and present species in these countries.”

CORAL CONSERVATION ON A GLOBAL SCALE Dr. Erinn Muller leads another groundbreaking initiative at Mote, namely the “International Coral Gene Bank” within the Global Coral Biobank Alliance. This alliance involves partnerships with countries such as the Philippines, Australia, Monaco, Indonesia, and French Polynesia. Together, they strive to preserve and restore coral reefs, vital to marine ecosystems. Muller recognizes the invaluable nature of international cooperation. “For me, personally, and for the research in our initiative, the connection across countries helps give you a global perspective on nature issues everyone’s trying to tackle all at once,” Muller said. She acknowledges the diversity of approaches and solutions that different countries bring to the table, enabling collaborative learning. Muller further underscores the importance of technology integration, with some countries excelling in automation and AI, thereby pushing the boundaries of coral restoration. She emphasizes, “A lot of the necessary technology that’s going to allow us to upscale reproduction is getting developed in other countries but is getting developed in a way that people around the world will be able to utilize it.” The power of international collaboration lies in its ability to create a robust network of experts who can share successes, innovations, and inspiration. Muller says it often brings a perspective many American scientists never would’ve considered. “Sometimes you get so entrenched in your own issues that it’s really therapeutic to talk to people globally,” Muller said. “Everyone’s facing slightly different challenges but we’re all working toward the same goal. It’s amazing to have to that type of network to lean on each other scientifically, technologically and emotionally.”

INTERNATIONAL MARINE SCIENCE DIPLOMACY: A UNIFIED VISION The global collaborations initiated by Mote Marine Laboratory transcend mere research endeavors. They reflect a commitment to international marine science diplomacy, transcending political borders and fostering partnerships with shared objectives. “The culture of sharing among scientists is a powerful force, transcending political differences and uniting experts from diverse nations,” Claridge said. “The camaraderie among scientists fosters a collaborative spirit, allowing for the exchange of knowledge and solutions.” That seems to be the sentiment all three agree upon: Without collaboration, this type of work can feel very lonely, and the pearls they’ve found from international colleagues are invaluable. “Sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes in the coffee or the beer together before or after the actual conference,” Claridge said. From coral, to sharks, to algal blooms, these collaborations not only expand our scientific understanding but also hold immense promise for the conservation of marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities. In an era where the health of our oceans is of paramount importance, Mote Marine Laboratory’s global initiatives stand as a beacon of hope, reminding us that when it comes to the oceans, we are all in the same boat.
Muller said that in having the opportunity to work in countries like Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, where resources may look different, everyone’s pursuit of scientific breakthrough puts them on an even playing field. “Hearing other people’s successes gives you that hope and inspiration to keep moving through and be that next story of hope,” Muller said.

“I feel so blessed every morning when I wake up that I have this amazing calling. It gives me joyful purpose.” – Graci McGillicuddy There are battles in life well worth fighting for, and in our town, there is no better fighter than Graci McGillicuddy. For decades, she has fought the good fight for those without the voice or power to protect themselves—our precious children. It all started in 1986 when Graci read about the death of 18-month-old Shannon Nicole Cook, who was savagely abused and brutally beaten to death by her mother and stepfather. Their heinous acts and the grief 96
SARASOTA SCENE | DECEMBER 2023
Graci felt imagining the terror, pain, and helplessness this poor baby must have felt, greatly affected Graci both physically and emotionally. She knew she must do something. That “something” turned into a 37-year and counting crusade of ending the intergenerational cycle of child abuse and preventing what happed to Shannon Nicole from happening to another child. THE EARLY YEARS In 1980, the Child Protection Center of Sarasota was formed to address child abuse intervention. When the horrors of the Shannon Nicole story rocked our state in 1986, the ways in which child abuse were handled then were not fully understood or necessarily handled as effectively as it could have been. In addition to physical abuse, sexual abuse of children was also on the rise.

There was a lot to learn and a lot to do. One thing was certain. The Child Protection Center’s goals were in alignment with Graci’s mission to become a child advocate for children like Shannon Nicole. Graci met with Dr. Hal Hedley who was CEO at Child Protection Center at the time. He explained what CPC did and she knew she wanted to help. Graci would become a major force behind this organization and ultimately become its biggest champion. Now, several decades later, with the financial and leadership help of Graci, along with a team of top experts, the Child Protection Center (CPC) serves not only as a refuge for abused children, but as a center that addresses the prevention, intervention, and treatment healing needed for the children and families it serves. TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE In 2008, with a large lead gift, Graci led a $6 million capital campaign to build a new CPC campus that would become a complete, larger, and more effective center for CPC. In May 2010, the new CPC Child Advocacy Center on Orange Avenue was realized. During the dedication ceremony for the Center, Graci gave an emotional speech and dedicated the new Center in memory of Shannon Nicole. She then released 60 butterflies into the air—a symbol of the transformation a survivor goes through. One of the butterflies landed on Graci’s cheek as a photo was taken. She called it “a kiss from Shannon Nicole.” It was a moment those in attendance would never forget.
CPC’s Child Advocacy Center, which could not have happened without the dreams, dedication, and vision of Graci McGillicuddy, now has centers in Sarasota, North Port, and Arcadia. CPC is a true beacon of hope for our most vulnerable children. The current CEO of CPC, Doug Staley says it best: “I have been blessed to work with Graci for almost 29 years,” Staley said. “She is the architect that strengthened the CPC and her voice brought attention to an issue that could no longer be ignored.” CPC Vice President of Philanthropy Sheila Miller is also so grateful for Graci. “Graci not only lights up the room when she enters it, but she has brightened the world of hundreds of children and adults. Her mind is always running on how we can make life better for vulnerable children, and how we can stop child abuse,” she said. Graci is a big believer in if you see something, say something. She would love to transform how people feel and care about their children and for people to know reports can be anonymous. She points out that people are quick to call out

She knew from her decades long first-hand experience of working with CPC, with other nonprofits and children’s shelters, and with local, state, and federal officials that foster care was ineffective and potentially harmful to children. Graci understood all too well why Dr. Block would make this statement. Once a child is abused, foster care agencies struggle to find homes in an already overcrowded system. Siblings are often separated which deepens the trauma, and extended family and foster parents are not properly trained nor do they have the tools or support to help heal the children. The child’s trauma manifests in various ways and they may be moved from foster home to foster home. They never heal and many turn to criminal behavior, drug abuse and violence. Graci’s dream was to create a safe place for children who have experienced early childhood trauma, to be loved, nurtured and healed. A happy place where children could benefit from sciencebased, trauma-informed care in a safe and a secure environment. She understood that dedicated foster parents are the heart and soul of a child’s recovery. She wanted to create the gold standard for trauma informed care through innovation, science and compassion and her dream was about to become a reality. In 2005, Graci with a group of committed child advocates, created the All Star Children’s Foundation (ASCF) to raise money for organizations

that worked to prevent and treat child abuse. With the economy in a downturn in 2008 and after all funds raised through the Foundation were distributed, Graci kept this 501c3 active with the notion of using it as a pathway to her foster care dream. In 2015, with another FSTgift, Summer huge she Camp launched a $22 million capital campaign for All Star Children’s Foundation. With Graci’s lead gift, passion, and hard work, and with the support of other generous donors and partners, the All Star Children’s Foundation Campus of Hope and Healing opened in November 2021. The 5-acre state-of-the-art campus provides children with a place designed to heal, empower, and inspire. Children from birth through age 18 receive traumainformed treatment in a setting where they can thrive, where they can experience unconditional love and where the course of their lives will be forever changed. The Campus includes a 13,000 sq ft. pediatric mental health treatment & research center, six licensed foster homes as well as a clubhouse, playgrounds and more. A BRIGHTER FUTURE From dream to fruition, Graci was hands on from day one. “Graci designed every square inch of this campus,” ASCF CEO Denise Marzullo said. “Coming here, you just feel this place is special.”
According to Marzullo, the impact of ASCF’s building and the feeling the staff provides is immense. “What’s so great about this campus is that everyone who walks through the door feels special, especially the children. At one of the lowest times of their lives, when they’ve just been removed from their parents, they get to come to a place that’s beautiful, that feels warm and comforting. It makes one of the worst days of their life just a little bit better.” Graci is thrilled to have Marzullo on board as All Star CEO noting that her love of children, along with her expertise, education, and vision from a variety of perspectives will help take All Star to new levels. As an executive and leader, Marzullo most recently served as the President and CEO of the Early Learning Coalition of Duval in Jacksonville. Prior to that role, she served as an adjunct psychology professor at Barry University and was President & CEO of Mental Health America of Northeast Florida where she led a statewide mental health advocacy initiative. “What brought me to All Star was knowing the mission of the organization is to not only impact the children here locally, but to share best practices in trauma-informed care that can transform the child welfare system,” Marzullo said. “We work closely with our elected officials to identify how the system can be improved and how extra funding could directly change the life of a child.” DECEMBER 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE

In 2018, Dr. Kristen Hoffman joined the psychology department at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital as Director of Trauma Psychology. As part of this role, she collaborated with All Star on program innovation, evidence-based practice, and research, and worked closely with the All Star team to identify, develop, and implement cutting-edge approaches to foster parent training and development, biological family engagement, clinical services, and trauma-informed care. Dr. Hoffman was so inspired by the All Star mission and vision, she joined All Star as its Chief of Programs in 2020. Dr. Hoffman oversees six core programs for All Star. These include Trauma Screening & Assessment, Evidence-Based Mental Health Interventions, Foster Parent Support, Birth Family Engagement, Trauma Training, Trauma-Informed Systems, and Enrichment Programs. All Star’s internal research team examines the impact of each of these six core programs and how they affect child development over time. Their approach to the research models allows All Star to draw conclusions about how innovative programs and multidisciplinary components provide meaningful impact for children and families served by the child welfare system and to share that information in a meaningful way. These programs are where they are today because Graci insisted on finding a way, despite many roadblocks and dead ends over many years. Initially, she tried to fix the foster care system, but realized she wasn’t getting anywhere. As Graci points out, “If you can’t fix it, create a new one!” All Star is becoming the face of model foster care and Graci hopes to replicate its treatment model throughout the country and ultimately transform the child welfare system. The Foundation supports these efforts by creating a national policy council that will take what is learned on the All Star campus and advocate at the federal and state level to infuse trauma-informed care into foster care systems across the country. The ripple effect of the work being done at All Star has already made a significant impact on mental health practices, on how we work with law enforcement and the criminal justice system, and even our school system. Teachers are now notified when a child is removed from a home, enabling them to understand what a child is going through. 10 0

Musicals in Paradise Manatee Performing Arts Center’s 2023-2024 Season of Performances
By Tom Reese The exciting winter season of performances at Manatee Performing Arts Center, also known as MPAC, is in full swing, with the current musical production of “She Loves Me” taking place on the mainstage, and the recent conclusion of “The Rocky Horror Show” on the Bradenton Kiwanis stage.

MPAC has a long and storied history in Bradenton and Manatee County, beginning as a traveling band of artists and writers in 1947. Today, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, The Manatee Players, Inc. is a year round professionally staffed corporation of 10 full-time employees, 3 part-time employees and more than 70 contracted directors, musicians, and designers. There are two different stages for performances at MPAC, the mainstage where famous and beloved musicals are performed to large audiences, and the Bradenton Kiwanis Theater, where a mix of musicals and plays are performed to a smaller, more intimate audience. The Kiwanis performances typically feature performances more edgy in nature that may be intended for niche audiences. MPAC really is a hidden gem in Bradenton. The state of the art facility hosts much more for the community than just musicals and drama. They are constantly lending the use of the building to other non-profit organizations and arts and cultural events. You can even sign up to take a tour of the facility and see how the performances are produced and walk through backstage areas.

“I can’t tell you how many people walk through our doors for the first time and can’t believe that this is here and they didn’t know about it,” says Rick Kerby, Producing Artistic Director. “We’re always improving and making adaptations to our building. I think once you realize how easy it is to get to the facility and how beautiful it is, you’ll fall in love and really enjoy yourself. While the season of performances at MPAC is currently underway, there is still plenty of time to see seven different shows yet to debut.
She Loves Me (Mainstage) “She Loves Me” is widely considered as one of the most charming musicals ever written. Based on the 1937 play, “Parfumerie,” it is a family friendly performance described by MPAC as “a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance.” The musical follows Amalia and Georg, two parfumerie clerks who are always getting on each other’s nerves. Despite the troubles in the workplace, they both dive deeply into an anonymous pen-pal style relationship with each other without realizing it. The story follows what happens when it is revealed the two have inadvertently fallen in love with each other without even realizing it. “She Loves Me” will conclude its performances on Sunday, December 10 at 2 p.m. at the MPAC. Oklahoma! (Mainstage) “Oklahoma!” opens on Thursday, January 18, 2024 and concludes on Sunday, January 28, 2024. This classic is one of the most globally acclaimed musicals ever written. It made its Broadway debut in 1941 and ran for a record 2,212 performances before eventually being made into an Oscar winning film in 1955. “Oklahoma!” is a romantic comedy set in 1906 outside the town of Claremore in the farm country of Indian Territory. The story follows two men, cowboy Curly and farm hand Jud, as they quarrel for the love of a local farm girl, Laurey. The tensions rise between the two men and their antics capture the interest of the whole town as the love story progresses. Parade (Mainstage) “Parade” opens on Thursday, March 7, 2024 and concludes on Sunday, March 17, 2024. The daring and bold musical features a heart wrenching story about the 1913 trial and imprisonment, and 1915 lynching, of Jewish American Leo Frank in Georgia. The overall nature and theme of this performance is geared more toward adults than family. Following its Broadway debut in 1998 and subsequent US tour, “Parade” got a major revival in February 2023. The modern adaptation of the musical went on to be nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Revival of a Musical.

nominations. This play features adult themes and is not suitable for younger children. This performance will take place at MPAC from Thursday, January 11, 2024 until Sunday, January 21, 2024.
Kiss Me Kate (Mainstage) “Kiss Me Kate” opens on Thursday, April 25, 2024 and concludes on Sunday, May 11, 2024. This Tony Award winning musical made its Broadway debut in 1948, with two more revivals in 1999, and 2019. “Kiss Me Kate” is a comedic musical about a divorced couple, who finds themselves working together as the leads in a production of “The Taming of the Shrew.” The backstage banter between the two mirrors what is happening onstage. The unique play-within-a-play storyline shines on topics such as love, marriage, gender, politics, and the joyful world of theatre people. This funny and whimsical performance is fun for the whole family to see. Crimes of the Heart (Kiwanis Theater) “Crimes of the Heart” is a dark comedy play that premiered in 1979 and went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1981 while on Broadway. The play was later adapted to a feature film that received three Academy Award 10 6

Set in Mississippi during the mid-20th century, the main plot follows three sisters that grew up in a dysfunctional family and were prone to causing incidents. Babe, one of the sisters, shoots her abusive husband, bringing the sisters back together to deal with all of their past drama and work things out for the future. The Glass Menagerie (Kiwanis Theater) “The Glass Menagerie’’ is a memory play written by Tennessee Williams that premiered in 1944 in Chicago. The play later moved on to Broadway and won the 1945 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for excellence in theater. This play will take place from Thursday, February 29, 2024 until Sunday, March 10, 2024. The plot follows the main character and narrator, Tom, as he recalls stories from his past in St. Louis, Missouri during the 1930s. The story focuses on Tom’s mother and sister as they navigate how to adapt to the changing world around them. The play tackles themes of gender roles, desire, responsibility, and struggling to fit in. Working (Kiwanis Theater) “Working” is a musical that premiered in Chicago during 1977, and moved to Broadway a year later. It was nominated for several Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards. Since

then it has been adapted into a book and revived as a musical all over the country. It will premiere at MPAC on Thursday, March 28, 2024 and run until Sunday, April 7, 2024. The witty musical follows events based on true stories of various types of people working various types of jobs. It spans a 24 hour period and shows the audience what it’s like for these workers as they balance their jobs and personal lives. educationmatters 20 Years of Embracing Our Differences By Tom Reese If you’ve ever been to Marina Jack or walked through Bayfront Park in Sarasota, you’ve probably observed several large displays of unique and thought provoking art scattered throughout. You might not realize the organization behind the exhibit has been around for two decades and does a lot more than what meets the eye. In February 2004, a traveling art exhibit from Jerusalem, Israel was put on display throughout Bayfront Park in partnership with the Florida Holocaust Museum. The exhibit, coined “Coexistence,” featured nearly 40 billboard-sized displays of photography, illustrations, paintings and other styles of art that included quotations on the importance of crossing social boundaries and inspiring social change. “Coexistence” originally premiered in St. Petersburg, Florida in December, 2003. Nearly every single piece of art was vandalized with cutting or spray painting, some of which included racial slurs and designated as hate crimes by local police. Despite the disappointing start, promoters were not discouraged. In fact, it pushed them to continue the work and stress the glaring need for more tolerance in our local communities. The exhibit fared well in Sarasota with over 100,000 visitors, resulting in several community leaders joining 10 8

together to make it an annual event with new pieces made by regional artists. In 2005, they obtained nonprofit status and established the organization: Embracing Our Differences. In addition to the annual display of art, the organization began focusing on educational aspects to reach children and schools in the greater Sarasota area. EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES Since 2004, Embracing Our Differences has impacted over 587,000 students through its educational initiatives. The largest program in effect is its school field trips, with the goal to get as many children as possible to visit the annual exhibit. Embracing Our Differences pays for every single penny it takes to make these field trips happen. “Field trips really are the best part about being down in the park,” says Sarah Wertheimer, Executive Director of Embracing Our Differences. “You have these younger students that really get to discuss the artwork with each other and look at it from their own perspective.” The field trips include a guided tour hosted by high school students specially trained in visual thinking strategies. The tour guides are not there to tell the kids what each piece means or intends to convey, but

to ask a series of questions to get them to think about it on their own. Each answer is unique by the viewer and neither right or wrong. It’s meant to be a critical thinking assignment to inspire children to react to art in their own way. In an effort to expand upon the field trip to see the art exhibits in Bayfront Park, Embracing Our Differences has created the “Make-A-Day Of It!” program. This allows the school to send the students to another arts and cultural organization in Sarasota to make it a full day of diversity education. Participating organizations include Florida Studio Theatre, Mote Marine Laboratory, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Van Wezel Schooltime Performances, and the Sarasota Art Museum. Another educational program hosted by Embracing Our Differences is called the Bucket Fillers Reading Day. This program offers a unique classroom reading opportunity to promote kindness in pre-kindergarten through third grade classrooms. The books each child will read use the concept of an invisible bucket to encourage positive behavior and warm hearts. The children will then fill up each other’s buckets by writing compliments and messages of encouragement to their peers.

In addition to being beneficial to early child development, teachers are offered workshops that provide ideas to expand upon the meaning of “filling buckets” throughout the year. Embracing Our Differences also hosts various unrelated workshops throughout the year to offer teachers ways to get Professional Development credits and expand their own education. Another event hosted annually in schools by Embracing Our Differences is called “Unity Day.” This initiative promotes empathy and respect among high school students through a full-day workshop of team-building activities that encourage cooperation and communication, while providing opportunities for students to embrace their similarities and respect their differences.
“The simple metaphor of a bucket helps all age-levels understand the importance of consideration and love, particularly towards those who bully,” says Wertheimer.
Unity Day takes place over the course of a full school day and includes interactive workshops and lessons as students gather in small groups. An example of one activity is called “If You Really Knew Me,” where students demonstrate the importance of being your authentic self and being able to recognize that there is more to your peers than what is apparent on the surface.
This year, Bucket Fillers Reading Day took place on November 14, and reached approximately 9,000 young children in over 500 classrooms throughout Sarasota

Meaningful change in eliminating bullying occurs when students feel empowered to make a difference on their school’s campus with peer-driven initiatives that encourage students of all ages and backgrounds to learn from each other.”

Other programs hosted by Embracing Our Differences include coexistence clubs in local high schools and middle schools, professional development workshops, and bully prevention workshops for educators. 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Embracing Our Differences is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary with the theme of “Embracing Kindness.” For the first time ever, they recently hosted a unique exhibit at the Sarasota Art Museum. The exhibit took place from October 21 to November 26, and featured enlarged images of 14 original works of art and quotations from the past 20 years, created by local, national and international artists, writers and students. “This is a blast from the past kind of exhibit,” says Wertheimer. “It features full sized pieces of art from the last 20 years. This really helps us celebrate all that we have done, and all that we plan to do. It is also a big thank you to our community for really trying to embrace kindness during these divisive and polarizing times.”

The main 2024 exhibition will debut in Bayfront Park on January 21, 2024, with a grand opening celebration at 12 p.m. This year, Embracing Our Differences received 16,604 submissions of art from 125 countries and 584 different schools from around the world. This includes submissions from all kinds of artists, including students, adults, professionals, and amateurs. The submissions are categorized into two separate categories: visual arts and creative writings. They are judged by two separate committees, then matched together at the end to display 50 pieces of art and 50 quotations. To highlight the growth of the exhibit, Embracing Our Differences only took a total of 124 submissions the first year of judging. It is clearly being noticed and admired all across the world. The exhibit will be in place at Bayfront Park from January 21 until April 14, 2024. They are also bringing it back to St. Petersburg from March 2 to March 31, 2024 in Poynter Park.

Guided Care takes Care Management to the next level. This revolutionary program designed by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing aims to improve health outcomes and reduce spending by better managing care for the growing number of aging Americans with multiple chronic conditions. Each program is “Guided” around the basic principles of nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, and socialization. Our Guided Care Guides also apply the latest research on improving cognitive function and brain health. Guided Care creates a structured process for registered nurses to assess patients’ needs, create care plans, and teach patients and their caregivers to manage health conditions. Youthful Aging Home Health, founded in Sarasota in 1993, is a pioneer in creating the model for concierge home care and implementing new programs to optimize client health. After review of multiple Johns Hopkins Guided Care research studies and awards, I decided to join forces with Johns Hopkins Guided Care. Another reason for our Johns Hopkins Guided Care program commitment, was the results of a 32-month randomized controlled trial of Guided Care patients which found there were 29% fewer home care visits because of Guided Care. This is significant. At Youthful Aging Home Health, we proactively guide our clients in the self-care of their chronic conditions while integrating life-style interventions and facilitating home adaptations and maintenance services supporting of aging in place. 122

In addition, we know that 90% of people over the age of 65 want to age in place yet many lack the know-how. We also know that lifestyle interventions can have a profoundly positive effect on chronic disease by preventing, treating and in many cases, reversing chronic conditions. To remain at home, access to basic support services which are customized to fit a client’s needs may be necessary. These include meal preparation, handyman services, personal assistant, caregivers, handicap home modification to name few. The program is administered at Youthful Aging by nurses specially trained and certified by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing. Using evidence-based standards of care, our team of guides, physical therapists, nutritionists, and others work in conjunction with family physicians to maximize health and lifestyle. Additionally, Youthful Aging’s exclusive support team continues to be accessible and responsive to client needs as they successfully age-inplace.
