NEW Beginnings We at SCENE look at 2017 as a chance to rejuvenate and reinvent. Hence a new design for our regular monthly reads as well as a new website – all for you, our loyal and most appreciated readers! Lots new for a magazine celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2017 – that’s 720 editions plus 14 special issues and counting. For most of us, a new year is also the time for personal restarts. Whether it’s your health, your personal or professional life, a new year always seems like the perfect time to start over and try new things. Every issue of SCENE has its own personality and theme and the January issue theme is no exception. It is of course Health & Wellness that kicks things off. In this issue we’re excited to bring you stories on new medical breakthroughs happening right here in Sarasota. When we learned that the revolutionary GPS Cancer testing is now being offered locally, we immediately set out to interview the notable cancer doctor who is the first to bring this testing to our community – Dr. Steve Mamus. PULITZER PRIZE-WINNER WOWS RINGLING COLLEGE WITH A READING FROM HIS NEW VIETNAM NOVEL

by Robert Olen Butler On Thursday, November 17, Robert Olen Butler closed out the fall Visiting Writers Forum by reading from his new novel, Perfume River, in the auditorium of Ringling College of Art + Design’s Larry R. Thompson Academic Center. And close it out to rave reviews he did. Perfume River is the story of two brothers, Robert and Jimmy Quinlan, who are both victims of their father’s profound and ongoing disappointment. Robert tried to earn their tough WWII veteran father’s respect by serving as a soldier in the Vietnam War. Jimmy preferred rebellion, heading off to exile in Canada where he lived for the next few decades, refusing to speak to his father or brother. In typical Butler fashion, the book moves seamlessly through time and location, but a good deal of the story centers around Robert’s later life as a 70-year-old history professor at Florida State University. He’s married to another professor,

Darla, though perhaps “married” isn’t the right word since their existence is largely solitary and isolated — they have separate meals, separate offices, and separate lives. Maybe the better explanation is that they’re living lives of quiet desperation. Robert’s relationship with the men in his family is equally broken, only more noticeably so. With his father and brother, it’s all on the surface, glaringly so. With his father now on his deathbed, Robert is dutifully by his side. But Jimmy still chooses rebellion — he doesn’t want to appear at his father’s bedside. It turns out that an unstable homeless man that Robert wrongly assumes is another Vietnam veteran is poised to play a large role in the happenings, serving as a mirror to Robert. His name? Bob, of course. Perfume River is a fairly quiet book considering that war is a part of it in a variety of ways, yet quietness is appropriate since the story is largely told in memories and characters’ reflections as they enter the later stages of their lives. There’s irony in how constrained the dialogue is because they all need to speak so desperately, yet no one knows how to do exactly that, and that’s part of the tense undercurrent throughout this book. Robert has a secret about the war. His father has his own secret. They all need to talk but communication isn’t something they excel at or even seem capable of doing. The plot is smooth and elegant, which helps keep the focus on the instances of self-delusion, unvoiced feelings, and crucial truths about marriage, life, and war that always lurk just beneath the surface. About the book, Butler said, “I hope that this book somehow speaks for my boomer generation. I hope it addresses the ways in which our families

are profoundly intertwined.” Butler knows his settings well. He served as an intelligence officer in Vietnam from 1969-1971, and he speaks fluent Vietnamese. Plus he’s the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, which is a Vietnam-themed short story collection. And he’s also been a professor of English at Florida State University since 2000. But it’s more than just evocative settings that makes this book work. “In some ways,” said Butler, “Perfume River is a book that synthesizes the essence of what I’ve learned about the human experience.” If you know anything about Butler’s work or his teaching of writing, you know that one key element of his idea on stories is the concept of yearning. “It’s at the heart of what fiction as an art form is all about,” said Butler. “Any Buddhist will tell you that as a human being on this planet, you can’t exist for even thirty seconds without desiring something. My favorite word is yearning because it suggests the deepest level of desire.” And he went on to explain that the ultimate yearning is one’s struggle with identity, the act of having one’s life matter and mean something. That’s what the ill-fated characters in Perfume River struggle with. And that’s why this book resonates so profoundly with readers. What do we owe each other? Ourselves? The dead? Our country? And ultimately, it asks: what makes us who we are? In sum, Perfume River is a first-rate, thought-inspiring book from one of the finest American writers we have. Butler is at the top of his literary game here once again. Rating:

The couple moved here in 2010 because a friend of theirs had moved to Sarasota in 2008 and loved it. The Bartners wanted warm winter weather, quality local medical facilities, convenient travel to New York and London, and a robust theater scene. Small wonder that Sarasota fit the bill and has been their home since then. “We love it here!” Beverly says more than once during our conversation.

And as any serious theater backer does, they travel like their frequent flier miles are about to expire. Bob points out that they’re heading to London on Saturday to prepare for the opening of a new production of Dream Girls, a show that — he carefully explains — originated here in the 1980s, was made into a movie twice, but has never been in London. The Bartners are producing a lot of shows in London these days, simply because it costs far less to produce shows there than elsewhere. Not long after they relocated to Sarasota, the Bartners partnered with Gulf Coast Community Foundation because Gulf Coast is a major sponsor of Asolo Rep. Bob notes that it’s not just financial support either — it’s offering the kind of wisdom, advice, and council any not-forprofit needs, such as the best way to structure and organize things. Bob says, “While Teri Hansen was in charge when we first started working with Gulf Coast Community Foundation, it’s great that Mark [Pritchett] and Veronica [Brady] have provided continuing quality

They continue to keep Gulf Coast a major player in developing the important things we need here in Sarasota and Venice.” One of those things that the Bartners want to see happen is the development of a new generation of arts and culture fans. “Look at Sarasota,” Bob explains. “In order for all of these wonderful arts organizations to survive, we need to get young people to try it all out. The arts are part of what we all need to lead productive lives.” One of the ways that happens is by making the arts familyfriendly. Last May, the Bartners discovered a very familyfriendly play in London, Hetty Feather, about a young girl who escapes the Foundling Hospital and has adventures with such people as Matron “Stinking” Bottomly and places such as a squirrel house and Tanglefields Travelling Circus. They enhanced the production and brought the entire cast to Asolo Rep to perform it. Asolo Rep was so pleased with their first family-oriented production that they have now committed to doing a family production every year. This season’s performance — a June/July production billed as “recommended for everyone ages 8+” — is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, which is based on the 1870 book of the same name by French author Jules Verne. Bob and Beverly have a wonderful banter between them. While they don’t fully agree on the specific dates of events or how everything exactly happened, they do have a mutual love for the theater, an appreciation for the art world, a love for Sarasota, and a genuine desire to help make our community a better place (including, as Bob put it, his desire to control the amount of concrete going up and increase the number of trees that we have). “It’s absolutely critical that we get kids into theater, ballet, and music,” says Bob. Bev adds that just the other day, she saw maybe 50 school buses at the Van Wezel. That’s the sort of thing that the Bartners — and Gulf Coast Community Foundation — get excited about. Positive experiences with the arts have a huge impact on the lives of kids and help build those future audiences that the arts of tomorrow require.

“I’ve loved the ballet for as long as I can remember,” Goldstein said. “I started attending the ballet here in 2001. After a few years, I started supporting it financially. Then I was invited to be on the board of directors, which I served on for several years. Then I was elected president of the board.” Originally from Buffalo, N.Y., the Goldsteins moved to Sarasota permanently in 2004 after visiting as snowbirds for decades. “Friends were living here and when my husband retired we decided to move here to be near all of Sarasota’s cultural attractions,” she said. Once she was ensconced as president of the Sarasota

“It would be so lovely to have a theater we could call our own. That would be wonderful. We are so cramped for space, because we have a very large school, the Margaret Barbieri Conservatory, which is a pre-professional school for ballet dancers. We also have our Dance — The Next Generation, which is a scholarship program designed to help disadvantaged children do better in life. It would be nice to have all of that under one roof. Ballet’s board, Goldstein made it her goal to do two things: get the ballet out of debt and find a new artistic director for the company, who turned out to be Iain Webb. “When I was president of the board, I and several other board members felt the ballet was going in the wrong direction,” she said. “We needed to make a change and it was up to me as president to make that happen. Iain was by far the best candidate for the job. He had danced with The Royal Ballet in London and was assistant director of the K-Ballet in Japan, one of that country’s leading ballet companies. He was the right age and it was the right time to bring him here to be our artistic director.” Goldstein added what clinched her decision to hire Webb in 2007 was when she took him on a tour of the ballet and then of Sarasota, but he insisted on returning to watch the dancers work. “He was the only candidate who did that,” she said. “It was just totally obvious that he had to be the one for us.” By 2010 the ballet carried a $700,000 deficit, but under the direction of Webb and his wife and assistant director, Margaret Barbieri — along with support from donors such as the Goldsteins and

the late philanthropist Ted Weiller — it has been in the black for six years. Goldstein is proud of that, how far the ballet has come, and what a bright future it has. “Our repertoire is unbelievable,” she said. “We have over 100 ballets in the repertoire. It is now on a fine financial footing. It was tough going in Iain’s first three years, but we made it. We also have the advantage of having Margaret Barbieri, who was a former star of The Royal Ballet, come here with Iain to be his assistant director. When we hired Iain, he told us he was married with a son, but he never told us who Maggie was. She was a big bonus and she has done wonders with all of the girls in the company.” Now Board Chair Emerita, Goldstein-added future goals for the ballet include continued financial success and stability in the company’s leadership. “We would also like to do more touring,” she said. “Because the more you tour, the more other people see your company and the better it is. We’ve also have a special fund for hiring orchestras, because there is nothing like having live music when one goes to the ballet. We do seven productions a year and four of them are covered by live music. That means that whenever we’re at the Van Wezel or the Opera House, we can have an orchestra, because both of those venues have a pit. Asolo Rep doesn’t have one.” Goldstein’s ultimate goal is for the ballet to have its own theater, rather than bouncing between the three venues it shares with other cultural events in Sarasota. “It would be so lovely to have a theater we could call our own,” she said. “That would be wonderful. Dr. Culp received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Vermont. He completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, and Interventional Cardiology at Duke University. He then joined the faculty, working as an Assistant Professor, with a clinical practice at the Duke Private Diagnostic Clinic. Dr. Culp also served as Chief of Cardiology for Sarasota Memorial Hospital and has been honored by his peers as a Castle-Connelly Top Doctor for 12 consecutive years. At Culp-Henson, multiple tests can be done in one day so patients don’t have to wait for results. “We streamline care, avoid duplication, and give patients back the gift of time,” Dr. Culp said. This combination of primary and cardiac care is especially beneficial for older patients, or patients dealing with several different medical issues, who like the idea of streamlining their care. For these patients, multiple health issues can be addressed in one office by physicians who know them well. They benefit from working with physicians who share their goal of maintaining an independent lifestyle. As the practice has evolved over the past several years, it has attracted increasing numbers of younger patients. These patients are interested in preventive care and benefit from flexible scheduling and convenience. Many of these patients have hectic work schedules. counseling them with regard to travel immunizations, disease prevention, and the management of their health conditions while abroad,” said Dr. Culp. “We offer the ability to communicate with us while out of the country, and may even prescribe medications with guidance on appropriate use for travel related illness.” Many patients are seasonal residents, and their care is coordinated by CulpHenson year-round. Both physicians have been in practice for more than 20 years and have developed connections through their academic and training activities. Therefore, they have an extensive network of physicians to whom they can refer when patients are out of this area. If we do cosmetic injections for the skin and face, we don’t want red blood cells because they increase bruising. As a young woman with a diverse range of interests in arts and literature as well as science, Dr. Laura Kunberger had an equally wide selection of careers she could have chosen. Rechelle “Chelle” Phillips and Marc Wolfe first met each other twelve years ago when she was cutting his son Joshua’s hair at Ana Molinari Hair Salon on Palm Avenue. Despite developing a crush on Marc from the time she first met him, Chelle and Marc would remain just acquaintances for several years. Little did she realize during these “secret crush” years that good things would come to those who wait. A few years ago while Marc was out on a date with his then girlfriend enjoying the food and music at downtown’s Blue Rooster, Ana Molinari was also there with Chelle. Without Chelle’s knowledge, Ana approached Marc and told him of Chelle’s longtime crush. When a mortified Chelle found out what Ana did after she returned to their table, Chelle immediately bolted from the restaurant. But Ana succeeded in her mission. Marc was intrigued and eventually, when both he and Chelle became unattached, Marc connected via Facebook, started dating Chelle, and never looked back. The engagement came as a total surprise. Chelle didn’t have a clue! Marc surprised her during a private wine tasting at the Hourglass Vineyards in Napa Valley inside one of its very romantic wine caves created by fractured bedrock under the Vaca mountain range. To add even more surprise, Marc secretly hired a musician who drove from Oakland to Napa to perform the couple’s favorite song before the proposal. The story on how he pulled this off is what makes this proposal so special.

While the couple enjoyed their wine tasting in the cave with Todd, one of the vineyard’s winemakers, the silhouette of someone else appeared at the entrance to the long cave. As this person got closer, he appeared to be a drifter holding a guitar. He then told Chelle and Marc he heard the wine was great at this vineyard,

that he was in-between gigs, and would they mind if he tasted some wine with them. How odd, Chelle thought! People don’t just pop up at this special place! Winemaker Todd immediately told the man he had to leave, but Marc immediately told the man to stay, telling him the more the merrier. So the musician, Peter, shared wine and chatted with the couple for a bit. Marc then told Peter that since he was drinking their wine, it would only be fair that he play a song for them. “Any song,” the couple told him. Peter starts playing and singing “their song,” which is not very well known – James Blunt’s “Postcards.” Chelle is shocked by this amazing coincidence and keeps saying during the song, “What are the odds?” After Peter finishes playing, Marc confesses he arranged for Peter to be there, got down on one knee and proposed, much to Chelle’s joy and disbelief. During peak fall foliage on Sunday, October 9th, the couple married among family and close friends at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, with its

The weekend festivities started with a wine tasting at the Trapp Lodge on Friday night, followed by a house party at the couple’s second home in Hyde Park on Saturday night featuring an ice luge and music by the band “The Last Kid Picked.” The wedding and reception on Sunday capped off the couple’s dream wedding. Chelle and Marc honeymooned through Northern New England and into the Maritime Provinces in Canada stating that

the pinnacle of their trip was staying at the Fogo Island Inn on Fogo Island, with its 420-million-year-old geologic history that includes stunning and fascinating contortions of rock formed by ice, fire, and sea. Since she was a little girl growing up in Dayton, Ohio, Cara Marie Convery vacationed on Longboat Key while visiting family members living on the Key. So when her mother also moved to Longboat Key, Cara knew there was no better place with so many great memories to return to and marry her love, Matthew Ryan Miller.

Matthew, a product manager for NCR in Atlanta, met his bride Cara, who is Senior Assistant District Attorney working in the sex crimes department in downtown Atlanta, with the help of his college buddy, Matthew Huckeba. Matt’s wife, Blair, has been Cara’s Realtor since she moved to Atlanta after law school. Blair not only has a great eye for picking out great homes for her clients, but it seems she also thought Matthew and Cara would make a well-suited and beautiful couple. Blair arranged a blind date for Cara and Matthew; a date on which the two couples would go out together. But at the last minute, the Huckeba’s cancelled, leaving Cara and Matthew to meet solo. The rest, as they say, is history. Blair not only found Cara her new home, but her husband as well!

That evening at the rehearsal dinner, Cara and Matthew, along with family and their wedding attendants, savored both the wonderful dinner upstairs at Marina Jacks, and the magnificent sunset views during the rehearsal dinner. Cara got ready for her special day in the Ritz-Carlton bridal suite. Despite this being the weekend of threats from the destructive Hurricane Matthew, the weather was perfect for Cara and Matthew’s wedding ceremony on the Ritz-Carlton lawn followed by a magnificent dinner reception in the Ritz ballroom, with both events designed with incredible props and furniture by local company So Staged. The band, Power House, kept every dancing all evening and DJ Joey took over for the after party with more delicious late night snacks and a donut bar. Immediately after the wedding, Cara and Matthew flew to Los Angeles and stayed at the fabulous Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for two nights before flying off to Bora Bora in French Polynesia for a week stay also at a Four Seasons. The meeting and wooing of Emily Anne Notaro by David Wheaton Berg gives true meaning to the slogan of the company they both work for. That company is J.P. Morgan and its slogan is “So You Can.” Emily is a Client Portfolio Manager for Global Fixed Income and David is the CFO of Global Investment Management Marketing, and while they work on the same floor, they did not interact during their normal business day. David would walk by Emily’s workspace and chat, trying out his charm, but Emily showed zero interest. According to David, a mutual friend from work, Faryn, took pity on David’s efforts and invited him to join a spin class where Emily would be to see if he could woo Emily outside the workplace. It would take months. During those months in waiting, in true millennial fashion, they talked more and more via instant messages, discussing a trip to Paris by Emily and Faryn, and Emily’s love of literature, and in particular, Ulysses, by James Joyce. While he had never read this book, thanks to Google, he was able to discuss the book at length. David then dragged his friend Jerry to a coworker’s birthday party, so he could distract Emily’s friends while he flirted with Emily. According to David, “Even though Jerry is an appalling wingman, I managed to get a date with Emily. Emily then cancelled on me and I did the logical thing and got blind drunk. To my absolute shock, I was awakened the next day by a text message from her asking if we could get brunch. For anyone else, I would have rolled back over and slept off the hangover, but I knew that Emily was different, and so out to brunch I went. We went on three dates in one week and became inseparable.” Since David’s parents, Kristina and Jonathan Berg reside on Longboat Key, the couple visits Sarasota many times each year. They wanted their wedding to be glamorous and formal, yet relaxed and comfortable, so they chose The Ringling. One of their guests said she felt as if she was at a beautiful event in a private home, which is just what Emily and David wanted. Having a meaningful ceremony was also quite important to Emily and David, and their rabbi, a family friend, not only illuminated what made their relationship special, but also helped guests, many of whom were not Jewish, understand key dimensions of the religious ceremony, as well as Emily’s decision to convert. A string quartet learned some of their favorite contemporary songs for the ceremony. Being foodies, they spent a lot of time on custom cocktails, inspired by their favorite New York restaurants, as well as a menu that would give their guests lots of options and flexibility. A sufferer of food allergies, Emily chose gluten and dairy free cupcakes, gluten free crepes, and ice cream sandwiches served from an ice cream cart. Emily and David both love Sarasota, and have been inspired by the warmth of the community, and thrilled by the support they received to make their wedding weekend exceptional, especially the generosity of Arthur Lopes at Pomona, who rented out his restaurant for the rehearsal party; the creativity of the welcome bags made by Sarasota Chocolate Bark Company; and, the vision of So Staged, which built a birch tree Chuppah with an ombré hydrangea crown from the ground up. And they credit their seamless and extraordinary weekend filled with love to Maria Brady, who made planning a wedding from afar, a dream. The couple honeymooned in South Africa, where they went on a safari, visited wine country and went diving with the sharks.

Last December, Gov. Rick Scott put forth his “Ready, Set, Work” initiative, which challenges all state-funded universities to have 100% of their graduates — save those moving on to graduate school — to have full-time employment within one year of receiving a degree in either of a school’s two most popular areas of study. The University of South Florida SarasotaManatee has accepted that challenge. Since then, the campus has studied how it prepares its students for future success by examining academic advising models at other Florida schools and exploring the latest research in college advising practices. The result is a new career-centric model that utilizes advisors taken from various industries who know the real-world opportunities, needs and challenges. Regional Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Terry Osborn explained, “As the university has moved toward ensuring that our graduates are ready for the careers they will enter, it was clear that

we needed to think about academic advising in a new light. Traditionally, academic advising has been centered on a student development model. Though this model serves well in some ways, it became clear that a paradigm shift was in order. In short, to best serve our students today, career planning needs to begin much earlier in the academic experiences of a student.” Osborn pointed out that the new career advising model incorporates career planning from before college admission through life after graduation. The intent is to ensure that each school experience builds upon and complements the others with the goal of creating career success for each graduate.

It’s more than just making sure that students sign up for the right classes and then apply to the right jobs. It’s an opportunity for industry experts who’ve become USFSM career advisors like Karin Weichlein, who held top sales positions at US and European companies, to inform students about what a specific job looks like five, ten, twenty years out. Weichlein strives to make sure that students know the importance of follow-through, the power of networking, and the impact of first impressions. “I hold them accountable to be timely, have good eye contact and not text during our advising sessions,” she explained. “I explore whether they are currently working and if they’ve started to think about their next professional career step. I work very closely with the local business community, and I’m always looking for outstanding, unique students who could benefit from a business mentoring relationship or from shadowing entrepreneurs to understand how hard it is to run a business successfully and why employers are looking for very specific soft skills as part of a student’s job preparedness.” It’s easy to see how this kind of informed guidance and support is far better than the typical academic advising that most schools practice, and it helps the school meet Gov. Scott’s challenge. Osborn added that all the new career advisors are on the lookout for student internship opportunities. He explained, “Internships are opportunities for students to build upon the facets of the career success

These elements are critical to career success for anyone.” Why would someone with a successful business background like Weichlein choose to work with college students versus remain solely within the workforce? She said that she was curious about millennials, their value system, their definition of success and their aspirations as it pertains to a professional career. She also said, “If we want to attract millennials to the workforce, we need to understand what gets them excited, what they are looking for from a future employer. I own my own company and I face the same issues as my fellow business owners in terms of effective communication, retention, aligning expectations and exciting millennials to take ownership of their professional responsibilities. By joining USFSM on a part-time basis, I work directly with millennials and benefit from their

insights. As an example, here’s my most recent insight: millennials obtain information from different sources than we (baby boomers) traditionally use (i.e. Instagram/Snapchat versus local newspapers/TV channels). It’s quite hard to reach somebody if you don’t use the same messaging system. I now have a millennial write job/internship postings for our company to make sure they’re in a language that resonates with the target audience.” Along with what the career advisors do, there are specialist advisors who can step in as needed to help with financial aid, wellness counseling, tutoring, and other issues students run across. USFSM’s Director of Student Success, Lauren Kurnov, said this is all part of what it takes to be a career-centric school. It means that “we are committed to ensuring that our students not only graduate with a high-quality education, but that they also enter the workforce with a clear understanding of the knowledge, skills and experiences that are essential for career success. RENNAISSANCE MIME He’s a promoter, a producer, a publicist, a public relations guru and an effective connector of people in support of their passions. But first, in his heart, he’s an artist, having mastered the art of mime from the master himself – Marcel Marceau. While building an eclectic career that’s included some dance, some acting and a lot of fun along the way, he’s worked with everyone from “The Boss” – Bruce Springsteen – to Oprah Winfrey. So what is Kenney DeCamp’s secret behind his mime mask? It’s definitely his caring attitude, love for his fellow man, and his tremendous energy harnessed from many of his life experiences, which include his early days on the South Side of Chicago; his young adult years serving as a physician’s assistant during the Vietnam War; and, the life he is living

today, in the city he calls paradise, Sarasota. Forever seeking to learn techniques and philosophies that lead to better health, he shares his passion for healthy living and the importance of growth through education with everyone from children to seniors. This Renaissance man also finds time to brush up on his epicurean skills, taking culinary classes to better serve his business of catering healthy meals. This month, you’ll find

him producing an annual fundraiser he’s very proud of – Looking into the Crystal Ball at the Selby Library – benefitting various youth groups through the Friends of the Library. Where were you born? On the South Side of Chicago. That’s where I got my soul.

Describe your childhood: In my first seven years on the South Side, I was the mascot of the football team because I was so small, wiry and energetic. One day I remember being carried home by this large 7th grade black kid, who was on the football team, and with whom I became good friends. Sadly, when he was 18, he was killed by a gang member. It was a mixed neighborhood, and a tough one.

Tell me about your parents. I’m more like my mother, but I look like my father. Out of all the women I’ve ever met, my mother is probably the happiest person I’ve ever known. Even during her last days battling leukemia, she just smiled and always had a joke. She was a gift from God. My dad was a hardworking guy – an “I bring home the bread and you obey the law” kind of guy. That was my dad. I am a balance of the two of them.

When did you first realize the importance of good health? In high school, I was with junior Red Cross and they sent me to leadership training camp. I learned a lot there. Then I went into the military. I was in pre-med and signed up to be a medic. Because of my scores and luck, I became one of the first physician’s assistants the army began training in order to create a

on the town physician’s assistant program. This was 1967. The actual physician’s assistant program wasn’t sanctioned until 1972. From 1970 – 1972 after getting out of the Army, I worked in New Jersey and New York. From 1972 to 1975, I became the first physician’s assistant to ever practice neurosurgery.

I recently went back to Vietnam to close the door and instead I opened more doors because the country is so amazingly unique. If people want to say who won and who lost the War, America truly won. I mean, we tragically lost 58,000 of our people, including my brother. We won because today, it’s a capitalistic country run by the Communists. It’s very open. It’s easier to get a visa into that country than it is to many other countries. You feel that most of the country is being run by 22 to 35-year-olds who had no idea of “The American War,” the name given this war by people who live there.

I wanted to see how it had changed. I had only been in Vietnam for short periods of time picking up patients. As a PA, I escorted patients from the battlefield back to Japan to the clinic that I was in charge of. I was stationed in an Army hospital 40 minutes out of Tokyo. It was the largest orthopedic hospital during the War for American casualties. During the almost-year that I was stationed there, 5,800 patients came through our facility. We did whatever we could do for them to get them back to Vietnam and maybe 20% of the soldiers went back to Nam. The majority went back to the states or sadly passed away.

What did serving in that war teach you? It taught me that we should have a Department of Peace as opposed to a Department of Defense. It taught me that diplomacy is so important. The

on the town concept of love is thrown around so much, but it is the road we should strive to be on. We are all one people on this one planet and we should try to figure out how we can make it better and happier for all of us. As JFK said, “we all breathe the same air.”

What does being a performer mean to you? Performance means a release of my positive creative energy that helps me to grow, while I see people’s faces communicate with me just by watching what I’m doing. As a mime, there are people who don’t like mime characters, so I have to read their bodies and still try and be nonoffensive to them, which usually means turning my attention towards somebody else, or mimicking someone else, or creating a wall around somebody else.

Tell me about the time you worked with the Bruce Springsteen before he became “The Boss”? When I was in the Army, I was stationed in a hospital near Asbury Park, New Jersey. I was 19 and Bruce was 18 and he was playing a 12-string guitar in a coffee house. I met him through my friend. I just fell in love with the guy because of his poetry and imagery. I always wanted to be a dancer and my father always wanted me to be a doctor, which is why I ended up in medicine. So, when Bruce would sing a song, I would act out the words of the song. One time they flashed my silhouette on the screen while I was acting out the song. You could easily see someone running down the backstreets. The song that I really liked that I acted out had these lyrics - “I had skin like leather. And a diamond hard look of a cobra. I was born blue and weathered, burst like a super nova.” You could see the imagery there and I was able to dance and mime that out. A girlfriend of mine at the time came up to me and said, “Kenney, you’re like a mime. You should be a mime. Have you ever taken mime classes?” I had a friend who was a mime and I talked with him and it turned out that his teacher had moved to New York City. So, I ended up taking some classes with them and helped manage the mime school while I was working in a hospital.

Eventually, you spent some time with the man whose name is synonymous with mime. Tell me what you learned from Marcel Marceau? I took a six-week workshop with Marcel Marceau at Hunter College. The essence of what he taught me was this: “If you know that you can control, then you can become a mime.” It’s all based on control, which is what I teach children, and why I am so interested in human growth education. We have the ability from a young age to learn about our body and how to control it. I didn’t learn how to control my body until I started with my mime classes. And with Marcel I understood the magnificence of it because he was truly a master. We ended up not having good relationship because of my mustache (laughs). He thought I should be my own self and not base my character on three people who I loved and admired.

on the town And those three people are Marcel Marceau, Gene Kelly and Charlie Chaplin. So, I had this mustache, and I knew how to dance, and I could tap myself around. And Marcel gave me the opportunity to control those two other characters and then create my dance form. My dance form ended up taking 15 to 20 songs and editing out pieces and running them together so that they ended up telling a story. In a typical show you could hear Bobby Womack to Springsteen, to Sinatra, to Stevie Wonder. I was opening act for a wide array of acts ranging from Phil Collins at the Park West, to Uri Geller, to Divine.

You mentioned Charlie Chaplin. Tell me about your affinity for him. When I was younger and I first saw Charlie perform his magic in his silent films on our black and white TV in the 1950s, I was mesmerized. When

I first saw his “Tramp” I thought I was the little kid following this guy along. I guess subconsciously there was this control. You saw this guy in control. As I got older, I read a lot about Chaplin and became intrigued with who he was as an artist and an activist. I, too, consider myself an artist and an activist. Still, Chaplin’s universal appeal is love. He’s the gentle guy, the outsider who wants to be accepted and not only get love, but give love. Even in his Great Dictator film, the mockery was to help the world see what was going on and bring love to the world.

Tell me about the classes and lectures where you portray and convey the virtues of Charlie Chaplin. I plan on resurrecting that Charlie character for children, which I haven’t done for a while. I used to go into colleges and perform a dance program, and at the end of the dance, a group of kids would come out with canes and

mustaches and perform as Charlie with me. In the routine, they end up laughing at me. Then we reversed it, showing the kids laughing with me and not at me in a wonderful ending in which all of us are laughing and hugging each other on stage. Chaplin’s message is inclusive – let’s laugh with each other and not at each other. A few years back at Southside Elementary in Sarasota, we did a great event for the Sarasota Film Festival for about 700 kids in which we performed the beauty of Chaplin’s City Lights.

One of your main interests in life involves helping people live healthy lives. Tell me one or two things that would help most people lead a healthier life. The first thing is for them to realize they have control. After that, they can learn human growth education. We don’t get enough education about our bodies. How it grows. Once we’re grown, we’re in a pattern, and we should be learning about that pattern. It’s really a shame that we

on the town don’t try to educate ourselves more about our bodies as we grow older. I learned the power and potential of our bodies through the works of Alexander Lowen and Bioenergetics, which is something I practice daily.

What is the one thing you would incorporate into our schools, regarding health education? I want to help teachers become more involved with human growth education so that it can be taught in schools. I plan to focus on teaching this over the next decade. I find it’s especially pertinent right now, especially at my age. People look at me and say ‘my God, he’s nearly 70 and he’s doing this. He’s helping these kids and he’s as healthy as he can be.’

Name two things that you do for yourself every day. Bioenergetics movement and sex, if I can (laughs). And my diet. I make sure that each day at least one of my meals is handmade by me.

Tell me a little more about Human Growth Education. It started out years ago as MEE (Movement Entertainment Education). I wanted everyone to learn about MEE. That’s what I did with the Kids Dance Company group. I’ve been in over 250 grade schools, high schools and universities doing my class. For the kids, it’s called Body Language – The Art of Mime. For the older ones, it’s called The Head Has a Body. It’s based on human growth education and it’s important, and should be taught in schools.

What does dancing do for you? Dancing is great. It puts the body in motion and lifts the spirit. With dance mime, you are literally acting out the song. You are falling in love, having your heart broken and you’re running down the back street.

With the reality of stretching, which also starts in the womb, I tell everybody, before you get out of bed, stretch like a dog or cat does. They stretch and then go on their day. The last reality is movement, and that’s based on walking. Most people walk like ducks, and just like Charlie Chaplin, that causes rigidity in the back. But to walk correctly, turn your toes in, slightly bend your knees, and walk on the balls of your feet.

What is the greatest thing we should teach our children? How to keep your body healthy. Imagine how much more brain power we would have had if we were educated from the get-go on how our body grows, on what we need to put in it and what we don’t need to put in it.

You encountered Oprah Winfrey during her rise to fame. What was it that you noticed about Oprah that made her special? I encountered her twice. I didn’t notice that she had “it.” The first time I met her, we were put in a St. Patrick’s Day

parade together during her first year on TV. She wasn’t even the parade marshal. I was the parade marshal’s mime sidekick. Two years later she’s a big star, and I’m doing a mall grand reopening for which we hired Oprah for $300 to sign autographs as I led a marching band of 76 Trombones into the mall for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Tell us what comes to mind when I name some of the people with whom you’ve worked. Vickie Sue Robinson: I was her first stage choreographer. Her record “Turn the Beat Around” turned the whole disco era around.

Gloria Gaynor: A fun lady who got mad at me and threw a pie in my face when I told her she wasn’t supposed to be eating the pie.

Donna Summer: Love to love you baby. A big talent. One night after a show in Albany, New York, over cocktails, she told me about her dream of producing a rock musical about Cleopatra, who she believed she was related to.

How did you find your way to Sarasota? A friend a mine asked if I would help improve the health of his aging mother at Venice Country Club.

Tell me about your involvement with Friends of the Library? I’m very proud and excited about this because it helps raise money for the children’s programs at the library. The wonderful philanthropist Nat McCulloch got me involved by saying, “Kenney, we need your energy on the Friends of the Library board.” After being vetted by the FBI (laughs), I was on the board.

One of your signature productions, Looking into the Crystal Ball, aka The People’s Gala, takes place every January at the Selby Library. Tell me about that. I was producing events that were similar to this in Chicago in various venues back in the 1980s and 1990s. When I got on the Friends board, they needed a fundraiser, so I suggested we throw a similar event inside the library. They were renovating the library then, so we were all wondering what the event would look like while under those conditions. We came up with Looking into the Crystal Ball. The event has raised a lot of money for the library, which directly helps kids through many programs. This year will be our seventh annual event. Over 340 people attended our first event and last year over 900 people attended. It’s the People’s Gala because everyone can afford to attend. We have an array of acts that donate their time and energy; artists, musicians, palm readers, you name it. People know it’s a great function, and they know they’re going to have good time. This year’s event takes place on January 11.

What are you most proud of in your eclectic and interesting life? I think that I’m most proud of my mom. She was the last of 13 children. She came from Poland and her family left when Hitler came into power. Still, there was business that had to be taken care of, and my mom’s mother had to go back to Poland during the week that the Nazis captured Poland. She went back and they were not going to let her out. The Chicago Tribune and the Polish community put up such a big protest, and congressmen got involved, so finally they gave her a visa to return to America. I have a copy of that visa with two Nazi swastika stamps on it. It gives me chills. I think of my dear mother and my grandmother.

Schedule and document an achievable goal – striving to “balance” your Career, Relationships, a Healthy Diet, Fitness, Your Faith, Family and Friends. The simple step of taking-action automatically initiates this “healing transition”. Namaste! ON BEING A GENTLEMAN They say that chivalry is dead, but we choose not to accept this unfortunate urban myth. So just what does it mean to be a gentleman in today’s complex society? Given its definition – a civilized, educated, sensitive, well-mannered man – you would think that most men would aspire to be a gentleman. Take the simple practice of holding a door open for a lady. More than likely, we believe this behavior might be taught through example by a Dad, and also through the loving guidance of a Mom! Thankfully, we both have observed mannerly men in action on many occasions so we know these

rare creatures still do exist. However, we’ve also seen the opposite too many times. So men, if you missed the manners lesson along the way, it’s not too late for you to develop the gallant behavior us ladies love. We have faith that our men will embrace chivalry once again, just as we’ve once again embraced 80s fashion!

HONORING PHILANTHROPY Her heart is big, warm and giving. Giving back to her community is something that was instilled in Tammy Karp by her parents, who were always donating, contributing, participating and making a difference – a practice she hopes to continue for generations to come. Tammy and her husband, Richard, moved to Sarasota in 1993 from Atlanta, Georgia following her parents here. Tammy believes it is Sarasota that has the big, loving heart, and she is simply amazed at the outpouring of kindness and the response by the community to people in need. Tammy first started giving back when she got involved with Southeastern Guide Dogs. Aside from the great joy it brought to her and her family, she was able to assist others by raising three puppies. Her first puppy, Cookie, was bestowed the highest honor of becoming a breeder. She whelped 21 puppies over three years and is now retired, living a muchdeserved life of luxury in her home. Her second puppy, Nala, is a guide dog for a blind and deaf woman. Her third, appropriately named Karma, is a canine companion for a 10-yearold-boy who is blind. What a

She has co-chaired the Blue Ties and Butterflies Gala benefiting Child Protection Center, and is co-chairing the upcoming From

Darkness to Light Luncheon benefiting Selah Freedom. Both of these organizations deal with very troubling subject matters that many want to turn away from because of the uncomfortable issues at their core. Her personal mission is to bring these important issues out into the open because only then can these problems be solved.

Her grace, passion, stamina and wit are just some of the amazing qualities that make us all proud to know her. We think EVERYONE in Sarasota attended the annual AJC 2016 Civic Achievement Award Dinner honoring Emily Walsh, Publisher of The Observer Media Group.

AJC, the leading, global Jewish agency organization, is currently celebrating its 110th year, with offices in the US and abroad and partnerships with Jewish communities worldwide. They work to enhance the wellbeing of all people and also work to advance human rights and democratic values for all. Executive Director Brian Lipton has been with AJC since 2007 and graciously shared an enduring quote he heard twelve days earlier from David Harris, AJC’s CEO. “We aspire to live in a society which doesn’t simply tolerate diversity but welcomes it, seeing it as a vital component of who we are as a nation.” Very pertinent with today’s on-going riots and killings, which now seem to be an everyday normalcy. After she was presented with her award, Emily thanked those in attendance and shared how she aligns with AJC, standing up and fighting for human rights and freedoms, and that it is our guiding voice for a more peaceful future, especially for the hopes of her child.
