an you believe it is 2024? These are the years science fiction writers told us there would be a cure for all diseases, everyone would feel safe, and we would live a utopian existence. Well in many ways, when it comes to our town, they are mostly right. Sarasota is a pretty terrific place to live, and while it may not be a utopia for all, we do have a lot to celebrate. We take up initiatives to improve our environment while building a better place to live. We invest in the arts and broaden our cultural heritage. But with that celebration comes the knowledge that there’s more work we all can do to improve the lives of those in need. In our January Health & Wellness issue, we start the new year with stories of enlightenment, inspiration, hope and appreciation. Our editorial lineup begins with great appreciation and love for one of our town’s most beloved sanctuaries—Selby Gardens—which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The Gardens has undergone an exciting metamorphous over the past few years with much more to come. Phase One, set to open this month, will showcase the first net-positive energy botanical garden complex. Learn more in this issue about the upcoming phases including the much-anticipated Phase Three: A Visionary Leap into Botanical Brilliance. The CDC reports that in the U.S. in 2023, around 1 in 36 children were diagnosed with autism. You may be surprised to learn that Florida leads the nation with the highest percentage of autism diagnosis. Locally, I have had the pleasure of seeing firsthand the wonderful autism programs being offered at Easterseals of Southwest Florida, right here in our town. I encourage you to read “Living with Autism”, an article of hope, which explains what these innovative and therapeutic services mean to the those with this developmental disability, a disability with a wide spectrum of social, communicative, and behavioral challenges for individuals and families. Scene contributing writer Kaileia Suvannamaccha begins her article of enlightenment, “Creating Agents of Change”, with this: “Every single person in the community is going to need a great nurse at some point in their life,” Laura Cochardo, MSN, RN, CHPN, instructional faculty member, and Level 2 Lead of the Nursing program at State College of Florida reminds us. STEVEN REICHBACH

When board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. Steven Reichbach moved to Florida from New York nine years ago, he’d been working for decades at the largest private practice anesthesiology group in the country. Though he enjoyed what he did, he was considering a different focus in medicine—treatment for chronic pain, depression, PTSD, and addiction. Dr. Reichbach was intrigued by research surfacing about long-term pain and mental health treatment with a common anesthetic drug, ketamine. He was very familiar with this drug, as he had been using it in his practice since 1991. “One of my former partners had opened up an office providing IV ketamine infusions for mental health disorders,” he said. “So, I spoke with him and realized I could use my knowledge and experience with ketamine in a different way, outside of the operating room.” Not long after, Dr. Reichbach opened Reichbach Center on University Parkway in Sarasota. Initially, 90% to 95% of Dr. Reichbach’s patients were selfreferred. Many felt their psychiatrist wouldn’t approve of their ketamine treatments. Today, around 70% of his patients are referrals from therapists and psychiatrists. He attributes this change to more knowledge about ketamine in the media, as well as psychiatrists and therapists seeing results from their patients firsthand. Dr. Reichbach has extended his practice by introducing an IV lounge and medical cannabis evaluations. The MedBar IV Lounge offers revitalization for many needs via vitamin IV therapy. In response to patients’ demands

and recognizing their needs, he uses medical cannabis as an option for sleep and anxiety issues and pain disorders not treated with ketamine therapy. In the late 1970s, a small group of women banded together to support a friend whose daughter was sexually assaulted on a Sarasota beach. Soon after, the need for services turned their effort into a non-profit to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Today, that nonprofit is now known as SPARCC (Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, Inc.), and it’s the only state-certified center for domestic violence and sexual assault services within Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, with offices in downtown Sarasota, Venice, North Port, and Arcadia. SPARCC serves and supports survivors of domestic and sexual violence through crisis intervention, emergency shelter (open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year), legal services, safety planning, therapy, hospital and court accompaniment, and support groups. They also provide additional outreach services throughout the region including children’s services, case management, economic empowerment programs, and more. All of SPARCC’s programs and services are free and confidential. In addition to offering immediate care and emergency help to individuals in crisis, SPARCC is committed to ongoing prevention education in the community through presentations at local schools, and community youth programs. Domestic and sexual violence training and education is also provided to law enforcement, healthcare, social services, and company HR departments.

MaryEllen Mancini, Vice President of Philanthropy at SPARCC is passionate about furthering the organization’s mission and connecting with people and philanthropists to raise awareness for a cause she deeply believes in. She is responsible for providing leadership, planning, and guidance for SPARCC’s fundraising efforts and day-today management for all development-related activities. In her role, she provides oversight and support for the volunteer fundraising arm of the agency, the SPARCC Auxiliary. Mary Ellen and her team also lead SPARCC’s communications efforts, coordinate fundraising events, as well as soliciting corporate and private sponsorships. Mancini is quick to point out the ever-growing need for outreach, philanthropy, and awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault—because it touches everyone, and so many require help. “Domestic violence and sexual assault are social problems and they happen in every single community,” Mancini said. “There’s no demographic or socioeconomic status. We have very affluent people who come and seek our services. They may not need to stay in our shelter, but may need legal assistance from one of our attorneys to get a protective order. These issues definitely touch everybody.” To keep all of their support systems running, philanthropic contributions are vital. And that’s where Mancini comes JANUARY 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE

A former freelance writer, her gift with communication comes in handy in many areas, including applying for grants. “We apply all over the place,” Mancini said. “I write the narrative for the grants, but we work as a team with whoever here at the agency has the best knowledge of the program or need that applies to the grant.” As a result of their efforts, SPARCC has received some generous grants to continue doing their vital work. “We recently received a federal grant to extend the funding we need for an additional three years for SPARCC’s new housing stability program, and we apply for local grants, like the one we received through Impact100 SRQ, to start that housing program. We are thankful to receive support from our local foundations as well.” Because the need is ongoing, SPARCC relies on the many volunteers and programs to keep everything not only running, but thriving. SPARCC’s Auxiliary was formed in 1983, and is composed of mostly women volunteer members, but men sometimes join their wives in getting involved. This group of like-minded individuals comes together as a massive fundraising arm of the organization, with 300 volunteer members. Auxiliary members meet regularly for monthly coffees where they plan fundraising events while raising awareness about SPARCC in the community. SPARCC’s annual events include golf tournaments, a holiday luncheon, black-tie gala, card and game party, SPARCC Runway fashion show, social gatherings, and more.

As far as goals for the future, SPARCC is focused on their endowment fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, working to build what Mancini calls their “forever plan.” This fund is in place to reduce the agency’s reliance on state and federal funding, which can be susceptible to reductions and changes, and build sustainability for programs and services. Legacy Society donors are a huge focus for SPARCC, not only because of the impact they make on the lives of the survivors and the organization, but the feelings of goodwill they give to the donors themselves. These donors give to the SPARCC endowment fund at a level of $10,000 or more, or through a planned gift. What makes it extra meaningful is they get to see the value of their gift during their lifetime, these donors receive regular communication and updates on the agency’s activities and impact. “When you’re a Legacy Society donor, you’re part of the SPARCC family,” Mancini said. “You’re allowing us to plan for the future and to be here for everyone who needs us, forevermore. The more money we can put into that endowment, the more secure the future of SPARCC is.” Legacy donors also receive extra perks like VIP check-ins for SPARCC events, they’re honored by having their name displayed on a Legacy Society Tribute Wall at SPARCC’s main outreach office, and they receive a corsage at the annual gala. “People will often ask Legacy Society members at the gala, “What is this flower about? Why the recognition?” she said. “It’s because, as a Legacy Society member, you

see the value in making sure SPARCC is here forevermore, and you’ve made a special commitment.” Mancini says her number one goal for SPARCC is to fill in all the empty spots on the Legacy Society Tribute Wall. “From the moment we put up the wall, I told everyone that I want to be thinking about how we can expand our design to get as many names up there as we can,” she said. “How gratifying would it be to know that you were a part of saving people’s lives, and you’re a part of something that’s going to live on forever?” As she meets people who want to be involved in a variety of ways, Mancini’s role is to align their passion for giving with a need or program that SPARCC has. “We’re covering a lot of issues. Homelessness and housing security is a huge problem for survivors of domestic violence. Many times, they face obstacles in finding affordable housing. That can a big factor in why someone may return to an abusive relationship.” Mancini says people need help not only moving forward, but in that moment of crisis they’re in when they contact SPARCC. It’s in those times that SPARCC is there to advocate and help survivors feel safe, whether that means meeting them at the hospital any time of day, going through the court system, or helping them navigate whatever difficult choices they need to make. Through the Impact100 SRQ grant, a door has been opened for a housing stability program for survivors in need, with supportive services and rent assistance for those enrolled in the program. “We’ve taken this gift that we received from the community and took it to the federal level and applied for a grant, and now we have sustainability for the program for the next three years.” Mancini says she’s thankful to be involved in a community like Sarasota and the Gulf Coast, with so many generous donors and people willing to volunteer their time to help. She also credits the leadership team at SPARCC, and the CEO for the support and open forum they provide for employees. “Now, we’ve taken what we’ve been given and turned it into something greater,” she said. “That’s what philanthropy does. It makes this whole community great and it makes us strong.”

The city of Sarasota will forever be entwined with the circus. John and Mable Ringling brought life to an entire area of Florida by making Sarasota the winter home of their world-renowned circus. Today, The Circus Ar ts Conser vator y (CAC) works tirelessly to keep that legacy alive, primarily with help from passionate fans and generous donors such as Karen MacDonald-Basile and Ralph Basile. In September 1997, well before Karen and Ralph found Sarasota, The Circus Arts Conservatory was registered as a Florida nonprofit organization, originally known as The National Circus School of Performing Arts. As it s suppor t and programming grew, the name evolved with the organization. Today, in addition to running a premier youth circus arts training program, The Circus Ar ts Conser vator y presents year-round world-class performances in the one-ring, five-star, European-style Ulla Searing Big Top, and other Sarasota venues. Acclaimed around the globe for its ar tistry and entertainment, as well as for preserving Sarasota’s unique circus legacy, The Circus Arts Conservatory also puts 80 percent of its ticket revenue into its community outreach programs.

Karen knew lit tle of this histor y when she entered the world of circus ar ts 15 years ago. Tasked with finding nonprofit organizations to benefit from her then-employer’s fundraising event, Karen remembered being blown away by her first circus experience. When she had attended a Sailor Circus show to see a friend’s daughter perform, she had fallen in love with the spirit of the show and the environment. The Sailor Circus, America’s longest-running youth circus program, is often referred to as “The Greatest ‘Little’ Show on Earth.” Over the years, a million spectators have come to watch children and young adults perform circus arts. Now part of The Circus Arts Conservatory, the Sailor Circus Academy provides a rigorous afterschool circus training program where students develop life management skills, gain self-discipline, bolster confidence and commit to achieving their goals, all in a safe and nurturing circus atmosphere. “I was so impressed by the whole mission behind Sailor Circus. Not only are the performers amazing based on their abilities and their performances, but also what it’s all about in terms of helping them develop self-esteem and camaraderie,” says Karen.

“ULTIMATELY WE WANTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SUCCESS OF THE CIRCUS AND HELP IT GROW.” Karen’s husband Ralph shared a similar story about falling in love with the circus. Ralph explained they visited the Sarasota area in the spring of 2008, immediately falling in love with its famous beaches and warm weather. They purchased a condo that same year and became official part-time residents of Sarasota County. After seeing their first Sailor Circus performance, he also became smitten with the circus and all it does beyond entertainment. “Ultimately we wanted to participate in the success of the circus and help it grow,” says Ralph. “It’s been a good avenue of getting to meet people and making new friends as well as getting to know the area and understanding its history.” Originally both from Michigan, Karen and Ralph initially came to their Sarasota home a few days at a time. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, they started to spend much more time in Sarasota, eventually becoming traditional “snow birds” and living at their condo months at a time. As they spent more and more time in the area, they began spending more and more time at the circus as well. Karen and Ralph wanted to share their newfound circus joy and exuberance with others. Karen flew her father in from Michigan for a visit so he could enjoy the warmth and sunshine of Siesta Key. Her mother had recently passed, and her father was a bit lonely and bored. After seeing his first Sailor Circus performance, he, too, fell in love with the circus. He visited a lot more and attended several performances before his passing.

At around that time, Karen and Ralph were given the opportunity to sponsor a portion of the floor of the newly renovated Sailor Circus Arena, in addition to their general support of the The Circus Arts Conservatory and the Sailor Circus Academy. “After being approached with this sponsor opportunity, I immediately thought of my dad. It had only been about a month since he passed away, and it just made sense knowing how much he loved it. It was the perfect way to remember him and honor him. That was the first major contribution we made to the organization,” says Karen. In 2022, Karen was invited to become part of The Circus Ar ts Conser vator y’s Board of Direc tors. The board members gather monthly to review financial reports and help with the decision-making and planning of future initiatives and events. Recently, board members were involved in planning the renovations to the circus arena and its entranceway to make it more accessible and modern. Karen and Ralph also strongly support the Arts-Integrated (STEAM) Education program at The CAC, which uses the circus arts to teach STEAM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. The Arts-Integrated Education program has worked with area schools since 2012, reaching more than 30,000 local students in elementary and middle schools. By first capturing students’ enthusiasm through circus acts, the program can then introduce a new perspective on key

academic subjects while meeting Florida standards for curriculum. Through the circus arts, all types of students can truly engage with otherwise daunting material. One popular program, The Marvelous, Miraculous Circus Machine, brings the principles of Newtonian physics to fifth graders across Sarasota and Manatee counties. Circus artists introduce the program with an interactive, circus-based assembly at the schools, ending with a real-life cause-and-effect machine. Over the next weeks, the students work in groups to create their own “circus machines” based on Force, Motion, Fric tion, Gravity, and Acceleration. The program culminates in a trip to the Sailor Circus Arena to see a larger-than-life circus machine that fills the entire space and features live circus performances. As more donors like Karen and Ralph step forward to support The Circus Arts Conservatory, the more The CAC can share its powerful impact throughout the local community. Steady growth has been something to brag about for the organization, as they work toward the goal of getting more people involved and educating the community on its history and significance. “It’s amazing to us how many people don’t know the general role of the circus in Sarasota. For us, it was one of the first things we’ve learned. We’ve been introducing it to our neighbors in Siesta Key and always shocked at how many of them have never been. We just want to continue to promote the circus, and the efforts of The Circus Arts Conservatory, which is really leading the way as a vital part of Sarasota,” says Ralph.

With just over a year in her current position as president of the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Stacey is leading an organization whose critically important mission is to help Sarasota Memorial Health Care System bring world-class healthcare to our community. How is she doing you ask? Just look around. There’s the new Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute. The expanding Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice. The Cornell Behavioral Health Pavilion, future Research and Education Institute… and more. We would say Stacey Corley is doing a great job for and with our community. Working with her team and a board of directors that reads like a who’s who in Sarasota, she is wasting no time building on the organization’s past achievements and current initiatives. So how will this philanthropic dynamo further the impact of the Healthcare Foundation and Sarasota Memorial Health Care System? Let’s find out!

You’ve been in your role as president of the Foundation since September 2022. Tell us about your focus and accomplishments during this time. From a fundraising perspective, major initiatives include the recently opened Cornell Behavioral Health Pavilion, the Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute and the expansion of SMH-Venice. The latter two are currently under construction. Also, SMH recently celebrated the groundbreaking for the outpatient Cancer Pavilion on the SMH-Sarasota Campus. We have a lot of momentum with those projects where donor support has been instrumental in their creation.

We’ve been growing and are also planning for future growth. We’ve already begun adding new staff so we can continue providing our donors with our superior level of service.

Describe your and the Foundation’s partnership and collaboration with David Verinder, the president of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, who is also a Foundation board member? The Healthcare Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. Our partnership is strong and successful largely due to our collaboration with David Verinder and many other SMH leaders. We work together to identify areas of greatest need, many that are not funded by Medicare and private insurers. That includes programs, services and clinical research that are critically important to maintaining the level of healthcare excellence we’ve all grown to expect from SMH.

The Foundation has helped bring world-class healthcare to our community in several aspects of healthcare for over four and a half decades. What have been its most important research and technology funding accomplishments? SMH’s research and graduate medical education programs have tripled in size in recent years. It is with donor support that we were able to break ground last June on the new Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute. On the tech side, we are perpetually funding everything from the most advanced surgical equipment and cath lab upgrades, to high tech Giraffe beds for NICU babies. In the area of patient care, how does the Foundation assist the SMH Health Care System in achieving top scores? Some of the most important areas where donor support makes a significant impact are staff education, residency programs, clinical research and nursing. What does the opening of the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Center mean to the community? The Jellison Institute has innumerable benefits to the community. The vision for the institute was to provide comprehensive, patient-centered cancer care so that no one has to leave home to get the best cancer care. It is a state-of-the-art facility, with some of the nation’s top oncologists, highly trained oncology nurse navigators, nurses, and the latest technology. We love hearing patients share what a difference it has made for them.

Please address the concern about nursing shortages and how the Foundation assists in the SMH Health Care System to ensure proper staffing. The Healthcare Foundation assists SMH by funding areas such as continuing education and scholarships for nurses, and resiliency programs that help retain its nursing workforce. Mental illness is front and center nationwide and depression is on the rise. Please tell our readers about the Cornell Behavioral Health Pavilion and how it will help. The need for more behavioral health services was great and our health system, with philanthropic support, was able to create the state-of-the-art Cornell Pavilion for people struggling with mental health issues. Philanthropy played a critical role by supporting new programs such as in- and outpatient programs that were unavailable as well as enhancing previous services. The new facility puts everything under one roof and now serves patients of all ages. Now for the fun side of the Foundation’s work—the fundraising events. The Foundation hosts several signature events each year and recently wowed over 750 people when it brought back Rock the Roof. This month The Hospital Gala will be a sell-out event. Then there’s Women & Medicine and the golf tournament. Tell us about the work behind the scenes, and what these events mean for the Foundation. Hosting four major, sold-out events is only possible through the close collaboration of the entire Foundation

team, hospital leadership, staff and vendors who understand and are committed to our mission. Everything behind-the-scenes and front-facing focuses on creating an exceptional guest experience that promotes SMH initiatives and garners community support for critical needs at the health system. Events are also “friend raisers” which connect us to new prospective donors who want to learn more about our work. In a growing community like ours, what are the longterm Foundation goals? We are truly at a remarkable time in history. Unlike some places around the country, people are moving here rather than moving away. Many are interested in supporting their new community and often share that one of the factors in moving to our area was our excellent health system. Fortunately, SMH is growing to keep up with the population’s healthcare needs. Our goal is to continue connecting donors and prospective donors with the opportunities that positively impact healthcare at SMH and in our community. What does Stacey Corley do to unwind and what are some of your favorite places around town? Going on a walk or bike ride after work —especially on the weekend— is lots of fun. As the institution gears up to open Phase One of its three-phase Master Plan on January 11, 2024, the world is about to witness the birth of the first netpositive energy botanical garden complex. With over $57 million raised, this ambitious endeavor is not just transforming the physical landscape of Selby Gardens but also setting a new global standard for sustainable horticulture. Imagine a botanical haven where every leaf, every bloom, and every breeze contribute to a net-positive energy ecosystem. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is turning this dream into reality with Phase One, a visionary expansion that adds 188,030 square feet of innovation to the iconic Sarasota Bay campus.

“The completion of Phase One aligns well with Selby Gardens’ 50th anniversary,” Jennifer O. Rominiecki, President and CEO of Selby Gardens, said. “What better way to celebrate the last 50 years than by putting in the necessary infrastructure for the next 50?” Central to Phase One is the Morganroth Family Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF). This cutting-edge facility provides parking, a garden-to-plate restaurant, as well as a new gift shop, vertical gardens, and a nearly 50,000 square-foot solar array. “This project really is an international model in sustainability, helping us preserve our history, sustain our future, and safeguard our research collections,” Rominiecki said, emphasizing the significance of the LEAF. The LEAF doesn’t just mark a leap in sustainable technology; it embodies a shift towards a greener future. It’s a place where parking lots transform into solar fields, where a restaurant, named The Green Orchid, is not just a culinary delight but the world’s first net-positive energy restaurant, entirely powered by solar energy.

“One day the team called me and said, ‘We just realized that if we add this many more solar panels, we’re going to be in a realm all by ourselves,’” Rominiecki said. Another part of Phase One, the Steinwachs Family Plant Research Center, stands tall and resilient against hurricanes and is rich with scientific treasures. Housing the Elaine Nicpon Marieb Herbarium and Laboratory, the research library, and a rooftop garden with its own solar array, this facility is a testament to Selby Gardens’ commitment to preserving botanical history and to the vital intersection of science and sustainability. “All of it really came out of the design process in an organic way. The instruction that I gave the design team was, ‘Just make the project as green as possible, as sustainable as possible,’” says Rominiecki, underscoring the integral role that sustainability played in shaping every facet of Phase One. Phase One also dons the Jean Goldstein Welcome Center, with its ticketing pavilion, welcome gallery, and theater, beckoning visitors into the heart of Selby Gardens. It’s a place designed not just to accommodate but to immerse, to orient, and to welcome with open arms. Can you feel the overarching theme here? What really sets Phase One apart is its commitment to sustainability. Going beyond traditional benchmarks, Selby Gardens aims for “Petal” certification through The Living Building Challenge of the International Living Future Institute. This certification isn’t just about constructing buildings, it’s a testament to Selby Gardens’ commitment to be a living example of environmental stewardship. Selby Gardens Board Chair Dr. Joel Morganroth recognizes none of this would be possible without the unwavering support of the community. “On behalf of Selby Gardens’ Board of Trustees, we want to thank the more than 3,500 contributors who have made this vital undertaking possible,” Dr. Morganroth said. Private contributions to “Innovating A Greener Future: The Campaign for Selby Gardens” were the driving force behind Phase One. Jean Weidner Goldstein, Cornelia Matson, and Pauline L. The institution is already looking ahead, envisioning a second and third phase that include a hurricane-resilient greenhouse complex, a learning pavilion, the restoration of the Payne Mansion, unification of walking paths, and enhancements to sea walls and docks. “This project really is an international model in sustainability, helping us preserve our history, sustain our future, and safeguard all of our research collections,” says Rominiecki, underscoring the project’s multifaceted impact on the community and beyond. And as you may remember, it was quite the road to get to this point. This decision finally came about in a 4-1 vote on February 16, 2021, when the Sarasota City Commission gave final approval for Selby Gardens’ Master Plan to become a reality. When it’s all said and done, the opening of Phase One will mark just under three years since that decision. “This project is really a game-changer for our community,” adds Rominiecki, reflecting on the resilience that brought this ambitious vision to life. “I’m just glad that we didn’t waver, and we kept going.”

THROUGH A 2GEN APPROACH By Tom Reese • 2Gen Family Photos by Nancy Guth Mireya Morales has many convictions, but one stands above all: “I don’t want my children to be statistics,” she says. “I want more for them.” A child of Mexican immigrants whose educational journeys ended after primary school, Morales herself ended up dropping out of high school and starting a family of her own as a teenager. “That’s what was expected of me: have kids, get married, take care of my husband.” If that’s what was expected, Morales has surpassed expectations. Over the past 19 years she has propelled herself forward, earning her GED and associate’s degree all while taking care of two daughters, now nine and 17, and working.

She now works as an executive assistant at a local organization, a position that, combined with her husband’s income, has afforded the family stability—they are homeowners and have achieved a comfortable lifestyle. But she’s not done yet. She intends to return to school to earn her bachelor’s degree, a goal that she has set for herself, in part to show her children what a commitment to education and continual self-development looks like. Morales is one of nearly 300 parents who have enrolled in college programs as a part of the 2Gen (two-generation) approach to Parent Pathways supported by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, that creates prospects for children in part by providing opportunities to their parents. A philosophy as old as the family unit itself, the 2Gen approach operates on an understanding that a simultaneous, intentional focus is on both children and the adults in their lives delivers powerful and transformative outcomes. Although it is common to see a focus on just

one component, like implementing pedagogical supports for children who struggle at school, the 2Gen approach takes the holistic view, recognizing that two major predictors of children’s academic success are parental educational attainment and parental income. While the term “2Gen” was coined in the 1980s, the concept became more popular through the work of Ascend at the Aspen Institute, which has been a partner of the Community Foundation since their team introduced the foundation to the concept more than a decade ago. SEEDING STABILITY The philosophy rests on the assumption that when both parents and their children receive opportunities for growth, it leads to positive family outcomes. The disruption of intergenerational cycles of poverty transforms individuals and families, and over time it also strengthens entire communities, says the foundation’s Vice President of Community Impact, Kirsten Russell. 2024 2Gen Summit Community Foundation of Sarasota County is set to host the region’s third educational summit on the 2Gen approach in February 2024, at Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota. The last summit occurred in 2018, with plans to host one bi-annually being derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This invitation-only summit is designed primarily for families whose lives are impacted by the work of nonprofit organizations and those professionals and experts in the field of health and human services whose work is connected to the 2Gen approach. Additionally, the program will discuss and evaluate the national and local trends regarding families and the systems they work within. Keynote speaker Anne Mosle, head of Ascend at the Aspen Institute, returns to Sarasota to open a dialogue between these families and service providers and help inform a community conversation about areas of focus to address in the coming years. “We very much believe that we should not come up with the ideas and solutions, we bring the people and families benefiting from the services to the conversation and ask them what they need to fulfill their hopes and dreams for themselves, and for their children,” says Russell. “Opening the conversation to the families is truly transformative for a community, a family, and for any kind of system.” Attendees will also hear stories from families directly impacted by Community Foundation of Sarasota County and the 2Gen approach.

“The return on investment when we provide families with pathways to prosperity is remarkable,” Russell says. “In our society, most families have a goal of social mobility, but what is necessary for that mobility is economic security.” Family prosperity is one of the main goals of the 2Gen approach, and a metric that is easier to track. Since the Community Foundation began to focus on this philosophy, 80 percent of the nearly 300 parents enrolling in college or post-secondary programs funded in part by the Community Foundation have completed their credentials, leading to an average family wage increase of $17,550 a year. “We want to help a family reach their full potential. That’s really what the 2Gen approach is all about,” Russell says. “No matter how much time kids spend in the classroom, they’re going to go home at the end of the day. A holistic approach says we’re going to take a look at the family as a unit and determine their needs and how we can help all individuals succeed and provide a positive impact to their community.” Providing pathways to education entails many things, but one primary support is scholarships that allow parents to focus directly on their studies, rather than worrying about juggling school with long working hours. While the Community Foundation provides grants and stipends to enroll in these learning programs, financial investment alone is not enough to ensure success. That’s where a parent education navigator comes in. At Alta Vista Elementary in Sarasota, a key school employee named Mary Tucker is the linchpin to parent success. Tucker provides parents with information about adult career and education opportunities, helping them complete applications, and ensuring that barriers that

This can mean helping coordinate car repairs, childcare, or in one recent case, calling a plumber out to a family’s house. Oftentimes, hers is the first number dialed when parents encounter any impediment, and sometimes, all it takes is her caring and reassuring presence to remind parents that they are not alone. Tucker’s position was funded for many years by the Community Foundation and recently was formally adopted as an official position by the school; it is a model that could prove instrumental at other schools across the Sarasota County School District, Russell says. MAPPING A NEW FUTURE While 2Gen often revolves around parent educational pathways, many times, when children witness their parents hard at work to improve the family’s situation, it motivates the children to study hard and find their own success. Russell often thinks back to a conversation with a mother and daughter that really resonated with her. The child had just won an award at school and was given the opportunity to choose a prize from the classroom “treasure chest.” Options included toys, jewelry, candy, and other items young children might be excited to receive. Instead of picking out something for herself, the child selected a sealed package of index cards. She explained that she would give the cards to her mother to use for flashcards and notes. “Here you have a child who is being directly impacted by watching her mom go back to school. out a gift for her mom, because that is what she needs to study,” says Russell. “It goes to show that one of the best indicators of the potential success of a child is where the parents are, along with their educational pursuits.” Education is a foundational component of the 2Gen approach for both parents and children, but it is based on centering parents’ voices, which often means creating innovative approaches to education. An example is Summer Learning Academies conducted at Sarasota County elementary schools and other area youth-serving nonprofit organizations. These programs have many advantages for families: they help mitigate “summer slide,” which disproportionately impacts lowerincome students, while also providing free or affordable childcare and longer hours, so parents can continue working through the summer and not be saddled with large summer camp tuition fees. Innovations ushered forth through 2Gen strategies extend beyond learning opportunities to include providing access to anything and everything in a community that improves quality of life now and for generations to come. In the case of Mireya Morales, she knows the hard journey she’s traveled will make it easier for her children.

Every single person in the community is going to need a great nurse at some point in their life,” Laura Cochardo, MSN, RN, CHPN, instructional faculty member, and Level 2 Lead of the Nursing program at State College of Florida (SCF) reminds us. With a rigorous curriculum and robust support system, the SCF Nursing program remains a critical contributor to mitigating the national shortage of healthcare professionals by supplying the local community with highly skilled and dedicated nurses.

A CULTURE OF COMPETENCY AND COMPASSION SCF Nursing graduates achieve some of the highest pass rates of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in the country. The program aims to nurture competent and compassionate professionals, who not only excel in an academic setting, but also adapt and persevere in the face of a complex and ever-changing healthcare landscape. “When the ultimate goal is to become a competent registered nurse, I wanted to find a program that would provide me with an education that was not only going to guarantee my success at passing the NCLEX exam, but also a program that was cost-effective,” says Chelsea Ritchie, a passionate soon-to-be graduate of SCF’s RN-BSN program, and former President of the Student Nurses Association (SNA), attesting to the program’s efficacy. Chelsea, who graduated from the ASN-RN program in May, is already working as a registered nurse in an emergency room (ER) department. She takes immense pride in her SCF education, expressing how wellprepared she feels to make a meaningful impact in her chosen field. She claims her confidence in navigating the fast-paced environment of the ER is a direct result of the program’s emphasis on real-world preparedness.

“It is a rigorous program,” she says. “It breaks you down and builds you up all at the same time. It’s a tough career choice, but it’s beyond rewarding.” From a faculty point of view, Laura adds, “We try to role model flexibility and resilience. In healthcare, everything changes all the time, so we need our nurses to be flexible in order to take care of patients exactly where they’re at. Not where we expect them to be, not where they should be, but where they actually are.” MULTIPLE PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS Diverse as they are inclusive, the range of trajectories at SCF ensure that everyone, regardless of their starting point, has an opportunity to pursue a fulfilling and successful nursing career. From the Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) Program, which equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to pass the NCLEX and become registered nurses, to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) JANUARY 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE

Fast Track Program, for students aspiring to attain a higher level of education at an accelerated rate, SCF sets a high standard for academic excellence. “Through our ASN Program, 100% of graduates have been employed within six months after graduation,” Laura recalls reading on the Nursing page of the SCF website. “You get asked on the floors while you’re still in school, ‘Do you want to sign right now? Here’s a contract. Let’s go,’” Chelsea remarks, reflecting on her experience as an intern. “Employers are waiting, and they love hearing that you graduated from SCF,” affirms Laura. Specialized programs like the Student Nurses Association (SNA) and the Clinical Internship Program (CIP) offer additional avenues for students to excel and specialize in their chosen areas. SCF also provides a seamless transition for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) through its LPN to RN Program. By providing multiple pathways to success, SCF demonstrates its commitment to fostering a healthcare workforce that is not only well-trained but also reflective of the diverse backgrounds and aspirations of its student body.

A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH The symbiotic relationship between SCF Nursing and the greater Sarasota community plays a key part in its ongoing success. Generous donor contributions underscore the community’s recognition of the program’s importance. “Our nurses go into the healthcare facilities, hospitals, doctor’s offices, etc. and serve as interns where they’re getting experiential learning. And it’s cost-saving to the healthcare practice. Money comes in, people go out,” says Cassandra Holmes, Executive Director of the SCF Foundation. Financial support consists of three key segments: individuals, organizations, and foundations. The Nursing program at SCF receives extensive support from individual donors, numbering in the hundreds, who regularly contribute to scholarships and programmatic needs, forming a solid financial foundation. On top of that, organizational donors, including hospitals, healthcare businesses, and community enterprises, form a collaborative front that further bolsters resources. The impact of a donor’s contribution to a scholarship at SCF exceeds that of typical universities, given the program’s commitment to affordable education. “We haven’t raised tuition in 13 years,” Cassandra notes. “For the same amount of money that you can pay for one class for a student at another school, you can pay for an entire semester or an entire year of classes here at the State College of Florida.” Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Manatee Community Foundation, and Bishop Parker Foundation, to name only a few, play a pivotal role in providing essential financial backing. Their contributions, along with many others, sustain various aspects of the program, ranging from scholarships to acquiring state-of-the-art educational tools like AI mannequins for the simulation center. “The AI mannequins are one of a kind. They have entire conversations with students without requiring someone behind the scenes speaking through a microphone. Having them is educationally life-changing in the sense that you can communicate with them as you would an actual patient,” Chelsea remarks.

“Being a full scholarship recipient, I am appreciative to the local hospitals and individual donors for their generosity, not only for myself, but for the Nursing program as well. Without their support, many students would not be able to attain the level of education and clinical experiences that SCF provides.” The Nursing program is actively seeking volunteers to act as loved ones for an additional kind of support. Volunteers are crucial for enhancing experiential learning during clinical shifts. “What we need are people that would act like family members so that our nurses know how to deal with a distraught mother when their child has been in a bus accident,” says Robyn Bell, DMA, Director of Advancement, emphasizing the importance of this fourth segment of community support, to further elevate the quality of Nursing education at SCF. COMING FULL CIRCLE Community support not only ensures the program’s financial health but also emphasizes the sustainable relationship between the Nursing program and the community it serves. A significant portion of the Nursing workforce in the Sarasota County area is comprised of proud SCF graduates, making apparent the program’s enduring impact, both on the local healthcare landscape as well as on the individuals who choose to use their acquired skills to give back to the community. “SCF sits at the intersection of quality and affordability,” says Laura. “Everybody’s there because they want to

serve other people and help them through the most difficult parts of their life.” “There’s a culture that’s been established here through the faculty and staff, then that goes to the students, who go out into the workforce, and take that culture with them in the ways that they care for their patients,” adds Robyn. “We’re really trying to change the way that future nurses view nursing,” Chelsea emphasizes. “This program has changed me as a person, and I now live everyday thinking ‘How can I change just one person’s perspective on nursing?’ Because it’s needed, and I want to be that change agent.” “It’s truly a calling,” adds Laura, who left her leadership position at a healthcare organization to teach Nursing education. “You are selflessly giving to others. It’s long shifts, it’s critical thinking, and it’s a lot of emotional investment in other people.” More than an educational institution, the SCF Nursing program is a family of compassionate and qualified individuals who contribute to the evolution and elevation of healthcare standards in Sarasota and beyond. mental health dr. rebecca cohen, MD by christy pessemier When Interventional Psychiatrist, Medical Educator, and Psychopharmacologist Dr. Rebecca Cohen talks about her work, her entire face lights up. Though she’s been practicing as a psychiatrist for over 20 years, Dr. Cohen’s passion for brain health is tireless. Knowing she’s applying her years of experience, research, and education to bring hope and relief to those suffering from a wide range of mental health struggles is deeply meaningful to her. Cohen manages a full-time adult psychiatry practice here in Sarasota, she’s an independent contractor for a consulting group—a private practice in Massachusetts, 84

and she’s on the Board of Directors of the International Clinical TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Therapy) Society. In addition, she’s a regular lecturer for interventional psychiatry residents at Massachusetts General Hospital, and she just added a precision TMS Center to her office. But that’s not all. She’s also the ABC7 Suncoast View’s Brain Health Expert, and she’s featured in regular segments on mental health awareness airing to the public in the Tampa Bay Area every other week. Some recent topics include postpartum depression, the effects of quality sleep on mental health, as well as suicide risk and prevention, among many others.

“People often ask me, ’Are you going to slow down? You’re working around the clock!’” Cohen says. “But really, I can’t get enough of this. It’s so fun to see people get better. It’s the best part of my day.” Cohen is also passionate about finding effective medication alternatives and using the latest innovations in technology for treatment-resistant mental health issues. With her TMS program launching this month at Cohen & Associates, she’s thrilled to be bringing precision TMS therapy to the Sarasota and Tampa Bay area and the state of Florida. Cohen calls precision TMS a game changer, because of its ability to better target and resolve treatment resistant depression without the common life altering side effects like low libido, weight gain, and sedation that come with many antidepressant medications. “I believe in doing the best thing that you can offer, and I think that’s always been my mentality,” she said. “I’m very excited to help more people get access to this innovative treatment option.” As a physician who was involved in national outcome studies for TMS, a Board member of the International Clinical TMS Society, along with her experience as a lecturer for Interventional Psychiatry Residents at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Cohen is uniquely qualified to provide these treatments. “Accelerated and precision TMS is very hard to find here,” she said. “There are places that provide TMS, but it’s what we call one-size-fits-all, which means it doesn’t matter the size of your head, or the anatomy of your brain, they’re all treated with the same numbers.” During this TMS procedure, Cohen uses an MRI-assisted and MRI-informed

precision neuronavigational device (neurosurgeons use it for taking measurements) that gives her a 3D picture of the patient’s individual brain so she knows the location they’re treating is in exactly the correct spot. In this way, each TMS treatment is highly individualized. She says these targeted treatments can make an important difference in patient outcomes. “What’s really nice is I’m not just a doctor running TMS, and then sending them out the door,” she said. “I also manage a busy private practice and have patients under my care. I know their families, their spouses, and their kids. And I regularly have siblings, spouses, and parents come in and say, ‘all of us are better.’” She adds, “It’s endlessly rewarding. When one person gets better, everybody feels better—because when one person in the house is depressed, you don’t realize everyone is absorbing that pain and that tension.” Though no one else in her family went to medical school, Cohen says her interest in medicine stemmed from her own lifelong curiosity about science and helping others. “We give them the very best of what neuroscience technology can offer.” “I loved learning about the brain and behavior during medical school rotations,” she said. “Psychiatry allowed me to combine my interest in neuroscience and form meaningful connections with patients to improve their lives.” Initially from Boston, Cohen attended Tufts University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biopsychology. She went on to also receive a Master of Arts in Medical Sciences from the Boston University Graduate School of Science, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Boston University School of Medicine with a specialty in Psychiatry. Cohen has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Hugh H. Hussey Teaching Award for Excellence in medical student teaching two years in a row from Georgetown University School of Medicine, the Psychiatry Resident Award of Excellence from the Janssen Pharmaceutical Foundation, and the Boston University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry Malamud Award in 1997. In addition, Cohen has been recognized as a Doctor of Distinction for multiple years by Sarasota Scene magazine. On top of the patients she sees in Sarasota, Dr. Cohen travels every 4 to 6 weeks to see patients at her Massachusetts adult psychiatry practice. Despite the many accolades she gets for her groundbreaking work, what Dr. Cohen is most excited about is educating the public about mental health and actively working to make a dent in today’s grim statistics on mental health. In the past few years, Americans’ mental health has taken a toll. The American Psychological Association reports 45% of adults ages 35 to 44 are experiencing

a mental illness, and 50% of those ages 18 to 34 suffer from mental distress. With statistics like these, it’s clear there’s an ever-increasing demand for mental health experts like Dr. Cohen. “I love what I do, and I keep driving myself and my colleagues to do better and be better,” she says. “And I think the environment here in this office speaks to that. We energize each other, we’re always reading, and we’re always improving what we offer.” In addition to precision TMS, and her tailored approach to each patient’s psychiatric needs, another new technology Cohen is excited to offer is pharmacogenetic testing. Dr. Cohen says offering these options for her patients goes along with her commitment to continually staying on top of the latest improvements in interventional psychiatry and pharmacology. “We give them the very best of what neuroscience technology can offer,” she said. According to Cohen, pharmacogenetic studies are genetics-based tests that give information in two major areas: how your body will tolerate medicine, and whether a medicine is most likely to benefit you. She says it provides helpful information about medication efficacy and about better medication choices for each person. “Medicine in general is geared toward what’s called precision medicine, which is leveraging the science we have now, as it continues to evolve and improve, to deliver the best possible evidence-based care.” So much of what Dr. Cohen offers, though, is due to her specialized training and education.

“It’s tricky in different parts of the country to find physicians who can offer that,” she added. “But it just fuels me and inspires me to see people get better because of these alternative options and because we did these tests.” Dr. Cohen regularly sees patients virtually—through telemedicine visits, something she says started during the pandemic that provided improved access to care for patients who would not have been able to do inperson visits. She’s been told government regulations for prescribing through virtual care will change this year, mandating that patients show up in the office to be treated. Given how vital mental health care is in today’s times, she’s hoping there will be some leniency in the requirements for mental health and telemedicine prescribing practices. Patients needing TMS treatments do require in-person visits, though the treatment period is usually short, and treatments themselves can be as quick as three minutes. After TMS treatment is completed, follow-up visits can be done through telemedicine. Even though precision TMS therapy isn’t covered by insurance, Cohen says most patients are willing to pay for it because they desperately want to feel better, and they value their health and improved treatment options. Though paying out-of-pocket isn’t always easy, she says that many who invest in precision TMS treatments are not just wealthy patients—but the people that value remission and who are investing in themselves. “What I’ve found is once people have failed other treatments, their chances at getting better from TMS are vastly better than chasing more medication options,” she said. “And most patients know that. They don’t want to take more meds.” “It’s about making quality decisions about not just what gets someone well, but what keeps someone well.”

LIVING WITH AUTISM Easterseals

Southwest Florida Autism Spectrum Disorder, a developmental disability that touches the lives of many across the globe, presents a wide spectrum of social, communicative, and behavioral challenges for individuals and families. Nationally, Easterseals, Inc., has been dedicated to empowering individuals of all ages with disabilities since 1934. The nation’s largest nonprofit health care organization now serves over 1.5 million people across 69 locations. In Sarasota, Easterseals Southwest Florida has become a local lifeline and cornerstone in the community, renowned for its comprehensive care and diverse support services, tailored to meet the unique needs of those navigating the complex challenges of living with autism. Innovative and Therapeutic Services Easterseals Southwest Florida offers a wide range of therapeutic services, including both traditional and innovative approaches. One of their most unexpected yet rewarding collaborations involves working with horses. “At our Easterseals Ranch location in Nokomis, we offer Hippotherapy, which is speech, occupational, and physical therapy using horses in our therapy treatment,” says Nicole Murby, Vice President of Therapy Services at Easterseals Southwest Florida.

Nicole explains how the transformative sessions not only provide therapeutic benefits, but also create a rare and motivating experience for the children involved. “Our children and adult riders are able to create a special bond with the horses while improving their strength and mobility.” Other transformative therapeutic activities that allow individuals to express their thoughts and emotions nonverbally is Art Therapy and Music Therapy. They are integral components of Easterseals’ comprehensive therapy services, and both leverage a universal language to promote emotional expression and potentially increase social interaction among disabled children. Early Education and Beyond Lily Preschool is an accredited program for children up to 5 years of age comprised of a specialized support team of teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, as well as registered behavior technicians, specially trained to recognize and nurture each child’s unique strengths and challenges. By presuming competence and identifying strengths, Easterseals cultivates an environment where children can learn to advocate for themselves. “One of the first things they teach in the preschool program, even though it’s not specific to children with the diagnosis of autism, is boundaries, and how to self-advocate through saying no or asking for help. All of the children learn these skills together, which helps build their self-confidence and self-esteem,” says clinical psychologist, Dr. Jena Lieb. The Easterseals Academy, a private school and outpatient clinic for K-12 students with developmental, physical, learning, and/or behavioral disabilities, boasts small class sizes and individualized attention as part of the holistic educational experience they nurture. For those aged 22 and above, Easterseals offers adult programs that focus on employment services, instilling individuals with a sense of purpose and independence. The PLAY Project Easterseals’ PLAY Project (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) is an evidence-based, intensive early intervention program that recognizes the vital role parents play in the growth and progress of autistic children ages 2-6.

The innovative program equips families with necessary skills to become active participants in their child’s development journey, encouraging a safe, supportive learning environment centered around play. PLAY Project has proven to be conducive to refining social skills, improving language abilities, and enhancing overall development in autistic children, as well as those highly suspected to be on the spectrum. The Importance of Early Intervention Diagnostic services are used to first identify, then understand the needs of every individual at Easterseals. Early intervention plays a pivotal role in shaping the longterm psychological well-being of individuals with autism. Dr. Jena, who is actively involved in conducting

comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, highlights the significance of connecting children to necessary support to reduce the long-term costs of treatment and risk of comorbid diagnoses from years of remaining undiagnosed, and ultimately alleviate stress for individuals and their families. “By taking the stress off the family, it helps allow the parents to be a bigger support for their child,” she says. “Families come into evaluations with different levels of knowledge about autism. When parents hear that their child has a diagnosis of autism, some families worry what this means for their child’s future, for example, if they will be able to develop close relationships or function independently as adults.” Melissa Holderbach, the Director of Behavior Therapy, offers insights into the challenges and rewards of implementing behavior therapy programs. “Our biggest challenge right now is getting insurance to cover the cost of services, especially for children. The earlier we can get those services started, the better outcomes we’ll have,” she urges.

Melissa highlights the individualized nature of interventions, emphasizing the importance of tailoring strategies to the unique strengths and needs of each child. “We use the strengths that the child comes in with. We really focus on that area to make sure we are building on the skills that they have, and we work collaboratively with our team members to hone those skills.” Combating Challenges Through Collaboration Central to Easterseals Southwest Florida’s empowerment approach is collaboration—with families, agencies, and the community. The face of disabilities has significantly changed over the past decade, expanding from primarily physical disabilities to a more diverse range of challenges, including ADHD and sensory processing disorders. “To the person coming in who is not familiar with disabilities, it just looks like a classroom of kids running around. But once you’re there for a little bit, you’ll see there are a lot of kids with different behavioral things that they need to work on,” says Nicole. Melissa emphasizes the role of parent consultation, working together to provide strategies within the home environment. “For example, we’ll begin toilet training in the school setting and then transition the interventions to the parents to implement in the home setting. We check in daily to assist with any challenges and work together for consistency of programming and increased outcomes,” she adds.

Nicole shares, “My daughter has a genetic disorder called Noonan Syndrome and my son has autism. They both participate in multiple programs at Easterseals Southwest Florida and flourished in their therapeutic and educational goals. Having two children with disabilities has helped me know what families need and we have built programs based on that knowledge.” As much as the organization promotes family collaboration, it also understands the importance of family respite, offering in-home and on-site programs to ensure parents receive crucial breaks. “It’s really hard, for families that have children that really no one else is able to watch, but our staff are experienced in working with them, and it really is important for parents to be able to have a break,” she says. A Lifelong Impact Dr. Jena emphasizes, “We can’t predict the future of what a child’s life will look like. But we can help connect the families to resources and appropriate services to help build on their child’s strengths and become the most independent adults that they can be.”

Judy Pfaff As residents along Florida’s coast endure the busiest months of hurricane season, a New York-based artist has transformed Sarasota Art Museum’s galleries with a site-specific installation inspired by one of the state’s costliest natural disasters. In Picking up the Pieces, Judy Pfaff explores the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian that battered southern Florida as a Category 4 storm in September 2022. In her largest solo show since 2017, Pfaff is presenting paintings, assemblages, and sculptures that celebrate Florida’s beauty and acknowledge its vulnerability to environmental threats. “Seeing with my own eyes the major impact Ian had on the land and homes completely shook me,” said Pfaff. Exploring the area was reminiscent of her childhood in post-World War II London and her experiences living in New York during 9/11 when white dust blanketed the area following the collapse of the World Trade Center. “In Picking up the Pieces, I use ordinary materials and natural detritus to distill what I saw during my visit to Florida.” Judy Pfaff routinely uses elements from her garden, hand-painted images, welded steel, Plexiglas, wood, photographs, melted plastic, blown glass, neon, and LED lights to build captivating, large-scale installations that invite viewers on a fantastic and unexpected journey. She’s also created a plethora of new objects for this exhibition, including several translucent fiberglass boats made from a mold at her studio. Judy Pfaff, whose artistic practice spans more than five decades, made her museum debut in Sarasota over 40 years ago. She advocated for a contemporary art museum to be brought to the region when there were talks of renovating the former high school, and was among the first to foster awareness for what would become the region’s newest and only contemporary art museum. Pfaff has held more than 100 solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad, and has received numerous awards, including an International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2014), a MacArthur Fellowship (2004), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1983). She represented the United States in the 1998 São Paulo Biennial, and her works are in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Whitney American Museum of Art (New York), and Tate Britain (London), among others. “Judy Pfaff: Picking up the Pieces” is on view at Sarasota Art Museum November 19 - March 24, 2024. 10 6
