from the executive editor

S

SUMMER IS ALWAYS A GREAT TIME TO REGROUP, REASSESS, RECHARGE AND REJUVENATE. Why summer, you ask? I have no idea, but if I had to guess, it stems from when we were children and summer was when we had more downtime, and time to explore. For me, summer is my time to take a real, hard look at where I am at in my life relative to how I look and feel. While I realize I can’t fight father time, I take time to consider where I’m at physically and mentally, and what internal and external factors may be affecting my well-being. I call summer my “fix-it” time. There’s no doubt I am not very successful, but at least I try! My summer mindset seems to steer me toward making Scene’s July issue our annual Beauty issue. On the cover, we proudly feature four incredibly smart, talented and stunning women who graciously agreed to share their “beauty secrets.” These women are truly beautiful inside and out.

CALLING ALL BOOMERS Next month’s issue of Sarasota Scene is all

They are high-net-worth wealth manager Aimee Cogan from the Bellwether Group at Morgan Stanley, real estate investor Kimberley Pelyk, cosmetic dentist and facial esthetics specialist Dr. Jill Morris from World Class Dentistry, and philanthropist and community supporter Ariane Dart. I want to thank them for their willingness to shed their professional clothes, let their hair down and allow us a glimpse into their daily routines. In our annual “Beauty Notes,” you’ll find tips and advice, plus new health and beauty products and procedures to consider. Already miss our social season? Check out our social season wrap-up—a last glimpse at some of this past season’s best events showcasing the people who and the sights that made them so memorable. Love travel? Take a look at two European escapes sure to make you decompress. There are also two beautiful couples featured in our quarterly wedding department, Scene Together. But let’s get back to the “fix-it” time. What have you done lately to change the not-so-great

about BOOMERS! If you’re a Boomer (born between 1946 and 1965) and have lived in Sarasota/Bradenton a long time, email us your yesteryear photos of yourself or friends with near something that’s either not here anymore or has significantly changed. What did you love best about our town back then? What do you miss that isn’t here now? What did you do for fun? What are your best memories? We can’t wait to hear from you! from the executive editor habits you’ve gained over time? What’s your new recipe for a better you? Let me know. Mine is a morning smoothie, which is my own concoction. Are you ready? Here it is:

Morton’s Gourmet Market, circa 1970s.

• One half filtered water; One half unsweetened almond milk (8 oz glass) • Two tablespoons of raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar • Liquid Omega 3s • Tablespoon of tart cherry juice • Liquid collagen • Vitamin C powder • Raw, organic green food powder • Organic beet powder • Plant-based protein powder • Fiber powder • Liquid magnesium, potassium and zinc • Inositol and glutamine powder • Fresh, organic berries I know that sounds like a lot of stuff—and you’re right, it is! But I have to tell you, it makes me feel good and it keeps me satisfied until lunchtime.

Ted & Pauline Morton, pictured here with son Eddie, opened their independent grocery in 1969.

Four generations of Mortons have contributed to the store’s success.

Thank You Sarasota!

We are grateful to all our customers for allowing us to serve them over the past five decades. It is truly an honor to reach this milestone, and we couldn’t have done it without you! Stop by our store for delicious prepared meals, gourmet goodies, and custom meats and seafood. Enjoy a sweet treat from our bakery or pick up some fine wine or fresh produce. We hope to see you soon!

Why, you may ask, inositol and glutamine? I went to a local lab called Any Lab Test Now because I wanted to get my Vitamin D tested. While sitting in the waiting room, I read a pamphlet about their 34-micronutrient test. No, it wasn’t cheap, but when I thought of the cost of the one test versus the cost of that test, it was a no-brainer. I tried it. I learned I was deficient in inositol and glutamine and borderline in biotin and folate. At least now I take the vitamins and nutrients I need, not ones I don’t need. When it comes to outer beauty, it truly is in the eye of the beholder. When it comes to inner beauty, that’s up to all of us individually. When it comes to good health, now that’s one of the most beautiful things we can have in life. Happy 4th of July! Make it a beautiful month!

The LIST JULY 2019 EVENTS CALENDAR

Yes, it’s hot—but so is our town! We start July by celebrating the independence of our nation with the sights and sounds of July 4. Afterwards, how about volunteering to clean up after all the celebrating? A few days later, you can watch the powerboat racing on Lido. Mid-month, consider heading over to Mote to learn about the importance of Lionfish. At month’s end, catch rowing fever and enjoy the World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park. Plus, there’s even more fun things to do in between!

inspiring health from the sole up Water and Sole aims to inspire well-being from the ground up–very literally–through an intensely pampering experience in a soothing oasis. And it promises to do it in less time than it takes to grab a quick lunch. The new business, which opened in late April, counters the stresses, or excesses, of modern life with a rejuvenating massage focused on the feet. Water and Sole is across the street from Whole Foods Market in downtown Sarasota. The spa’s environment is so ethereal that it seems otherworldly, while the talented therapist staff delivers an experience that imparts a true sense of well-being for clients. “We’ve gotten great feedback from clients. What we do is very different from anything else they’ve experienced. The space is designed to help you drift and be in the moment. You can stop rushing, working the to-do list and let us pamper you,” says Water and Sole’s founder Doug King. “But it’s more than just a sophisticated spa experience with upscale customer service. People feel the difference, and we become an important part of a person’s health and wellness routine.”

(A) quality foot massage and reflexology . . . helps blood circulation, fights depression, promotes better sleep, relieves headaches and body pain, eases PMS and menopause symptoms and helps with arthritis.

Because there is no need to undress or shower afterward, Water and Sole foot massages fit into everyday routines without having to schedule special “spa days.” Clients can go back to work or play in half an hour to an hour, depending on whether they choose a 25- or 50-minute massage. In addition to the profound relaxation they experience, many value the rejuvenating benefits of this modern-age foot and calf massage by licensed massage therapists, which incorporates reflexology techniques. Regular therapeutic foot massage becomes part of a person’s healthy lifestyle, King says. “Feet are so important to overall wellness, and people come out feeling like they are walking on a cloud. It’s so much more than a massage. A lot of people don’t know the benefits of quality foot massage and reflexology, which helps blood circulation, fights depression, promotes better sleep, relieves headaches and body pain, eases PMS and menopause symptoms and helps with arthritis,” King says. “Foot massage releases endorphins, dopamine and serotonin to improve sleep and mood. It also improves posture and can increase range of motion.” While wellness benefits motivate many regular clients, others see the Water and Sole technique as an affordable

indulgence for themselves or as a fun outing with friends. They enjoy the feeling of being cared for and pampered. Massages begin with a detoxifying Himalayan sea salt foot soak–with optional fragrant organic essential oils from France–and an acupressure massage of the shoulders, neck and arms. Clients lay back in comfortable reclining chairs, covered by a warm blanket with a soft cloth over their eyes, while their feet and calves are massaged. For the 50-minute option, therapists also spend more time massaging the arms and hands. Water and Sole makes the whole experience as convenient as possible. Appointments can easily be made ahead of time with a few clicks online or anyone can grab his or her phone to check availability for a spur of the moment relaxation break. The menu is simple. Clients choose between the 25- or 50-minute massage and can book with a favorite massage therapist if they prefer. King has an expansive plan for the future as well. When he saw the space at 1425 Second St., right across from Whole Foods Market, King knew it would be perfect for his flagship location. He envisioned it as a showcase for the type of experience he wanted to create for future Water and Sole locations across Florida. King also plans to expand nationally through franchising. “People tend to ignore their feet until they start having problems. We invite clients to experience our difference and begin the process of having healthy feet for life. Our goal is to perfect a therapeutic experience through foot massage by creating a theater of relaxation in a transportive environment,” he says. “Our services are centered on wellbeing and inspiring a vision for a healthier lifestyle from the sole up. “

acelifts come in many varieties. Mini-lifts generally create a pulled appearance. The next level, fascia facelifts, help reposition the fascia (a layer of tissue within the cheek area that helps support areas of the face). Fascia facelifts provide decent support, longevity and look relatively natural, yet lack the ability to fully restore the aging face. Certain adjuvant techniques such as fat grafting can fill in the shortcomings. So, is that all we have to offer? The answer is NO! The rare, deep plane facelift not only supports fascia, but helps recontour the entire face, lift fat pads, restoring natural volume in areas where it has fallen, recreating

the natural, youthful face you once had (perhaps 20 years ago). Using only the natural tissue without overly stretching skin or overly plumping with fat or fillers, a deep plane facelift creates a very natural, rested and youthful appearance. Other techniques certainly have merit, just not when performed to the extreme. This facelift provides a dramatic appearance change with very subtle results. Patients look refreshed, typically 15-20 years younger. Friends and family have no clue they even had a facelift. Is that not the holy grail of facial rejuvenation? This facelift is extremely complex to perform and cannot be performed in one hour. It’s

not a drive-thru. In order to achieve our true goals we have to be diligent, methodical, focused,

perseverant and have an unwavering mission to follow a true artistic vision to its pinnacle.

Do non-surgical fillers or fat grafting work in place of facelifts?

A

bsolutely not! In this world of instant fixes, missing is the understanding of the proper proportions of youth and how it changes with age, and perspective on how non-surgical techniques distort this delicate balance of volume in the face resulting in “the look.” Fillers can be used judiciously, especially in the 4th and 5th decade, but when we over compensate for the changing proportions of youth with more advanced aging, we unintentionally create a very

unnatural look. We fix the valleys and smooth the rough skin, but we miss the forest for the trees. Consult with a facial plastic surgeon to develop short- and long-term goals, including non-surgical and surgical options with set limits on how far to go to create a work of art with a singular vision and purpose as opposed to having anyone and everyone slap some paint on the canvas and call it good.

O

ur non-habit-forming CBD pain relief cream delivers safe relief from minor aches, pains, and muscle stiffness—great for backaches, arthritis, strains, bruises and sprains. In addition to the benefits of the calming and relaxing hemp-derived, non-psychoactive CBD, Trolamine Salicylate alleviates minor muscle and joint pain, and MSM reduces

muscle stiffness. CBD cream is able to offer a safer path to pain relief. Its naturally derived ingredients, like Rose Hip Seed Oil, Coconut Amino Acids and Vitamin E, soothe and replenish skin while fighting free radical damage. The heat-activating formula enhances product results. Other benefits include potent antioxidant results and soothing of inflamed skin.

C

BD treatment can be added to a variety of services including: facials to aid in stiffness in neck, shoulders, and arms; manicure/pedicures for arthritis, pain relief from

texting, typing, etc.; and all types of massage. The therapist will use 1-1.5 grams, the size of a nickel or quarter, per application, depending on the size of the treatment area.

How long does the treatment last and how often can I receive it?

T

as it is administered topically, any drug interactions are unlikely, although we always recommend speaking with your doctor prior to treatment or use.

What Exactly is Pilates?

P

ilates is a system of lowimpact exercises that focuses on your body’s core—the abdomen, back, thighs, glutes and pelvic floor. Pilates develops what most people want and need: core strength, flexibility, coordination, and improved posture. It emphasizes balance and creates long, lean muscle throughout the entire body. The main studio apparatus is called the Reformer. This specialized equipment is designed to provide resistance training and support while you lie, kneel, stand and sit to perform various exercises. Inspired by the classical Greek ideal of a balanced body, mind and spirit, Joseph Pilates studied various forms of fitness for his method to create the best possible group of exercises. Developed in the early 20th century to rehabilitate

bedridden patients in WWI, Pilates was then introduced among the dance community and gained popularity in New York by the early 1960s due to the lengthening and strengthening quality of the exercises. No matter your age or fitness level, whether you’re a beginner or advanced athlete, Pilates will create a strong foundation for daily movement—it’s for everyone across all walks of life. Not only is the exercise low-impact, there are also countless modifications for each movement, ensuring that everybody can participate. It’s a proven way to a healthier lifestyle and better mind-body balance. Pilates truly is a lifelong fitness regime.

C

lub Pilates is not an impersonal and intimidating big-box gym and you don’t need a private trainer to experience the benefits of Pilates. Each of our instructors has 500+ hours of certification training, so you are always in good hands. Using state-of-the-art equipment, we offer highquality, life-changing group training with a maximum

class size of 12 that allows you the benefits of private instruction without the cost. We are a “boutique fitness club” with monthly membership plans to fit everyone’s needs. We empower our members to make positive changes to their health and to their lives. We believe the benefits of Pilates should be available to everyone. And best of all, we believe that you can start anytime.

Trish Roberts, Lead Instructor, has been a fitness professional for over 18 years. Trish’s combined experience as a Comprehensive Pilates Instructor (Peak Pilates), Personal Trainer (NASM) and Group Exercise Instructor (TRX, AFAA, Schwinn) ensures members will receive an effective, safe and challenging workout experience. espite recent media attention and concerns regarding breast implants, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maintains that silicone breast implants are safe devices. A significant amount of research is ongoing related to a very rare medical condition associated with textured surface implants (ALCL). In addition, there have been no studies demonstrating a link between breast implants and any systemic diseases or illnesses (Breast Implant

Illness, BII). In my practice, I use an overwhelming majority of smooth cohesive, or “Gummy Bear” silicone implants. These implants create a fuller, more natural appearance with less chance of rippling, and no potential for leaking. In fact, many women are changing their old saline implants for silicone. Techniques continue to improve in breast lifts, which can often be performed with smaller scars, or the use of absorbable meshes for longer lasting support.

When do you use fat grafting?

T

he techniques for fat grafting, where fat is removed from one area of a patient’s body and moved to other areas to improve volume, have definitely advanced. I perform fat grafting

for facial rejuvenation, hand rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and Brazilian Buttock Lifts. In this procedure, a fuller buttock can be obtained without the use of an implant.

Sarasota Plastic Surgery 2255 S Tamiami Tr Sarasota, FL 34239 941.203.1303

What other contouring procedures are gaining in popularity?

T

he labiaplasty procedure has become much more popular, as women are frequently requesting a labiaplasty to re-contour or reduce the size of enlarged or uneven labia minora. This condition can occur naturally with hormonal changes, or after stretching from multiple childbirths or sexual intercourse. It can cause difficulty with hygiene, irritation, and discomfort with activities such as biking, jogging, sexual intercourse, or lack of intimate self-confidence. This simple outpatient procedure can correct these concerns with little downtime. Intensive weight loss programs, exercise routines, and bariatric surgeries are producing an increase in body contouring procedures, such as tummy tucks and liposuction. While not new procedures, different techniques have evolved to hide scars and sculpt the body back to a youthful form. Arm lifts have also increased in popularity especially in warm climates like Sarasota.

A

s a plastic surgeon, most would presume I would only recommend surgery. Quite the contrary. I always encourage my patients to do as much non-surgically as they can before they invest in a surgical procedure. Many non-surgical skintightening and fat-reducing programs work to some degree. I have Coolsculpt at my office; it works best on smaller bulges, not larger ones. Many skin tightening devices also work but with subtle results. Hydration

(both inside and out) helps skin look healthier and younger. And while tan skin can make you look youthful, actual tanning will age you. Stick with spray tan! Exercise helps you feel fit but tightening the muscles doesn’t tighten skin. Weight lifting will add bulk to specific muscle groups and help support sagging skin. The most challenging and rewarding area is the gluteal muscle group. Finally, there is always “optical illusion”

and “camouflage”. Play up your best features! Great legs and fuller midsection (apple body)? Wear leggings and tunics! Curvy shape? Play up waist and shoulders! Never

expect to look like the magazine models. Learn to love YOUR shape. Beauty DOES come in all shapes and sizes. Learn to make the most of yours.

Non-surgical options not enough? There’s always surgery. What about scarring?

Y

ounger breasts are generally smaller, high and tight. Depending on what you are starting with, this requires a lift (mastopexy) or reduction, which includes a lift. Abdomens are referred to as “flat”, I aim for smooth and shapely. The best results are created by a combination of abdominoplasty and liposuction. By decreasing

the amount of skin and fat over the abdominal muscles, all your exercise and toned muscle will be quite evident. Arms and legs are a bit of a different story. This is when we talk about the value of skin reduction balanced by a very visible scar. Hanging skin needs to be removed, but “loose” skin can be “filled” with shapely muscle attained through lifting weights.

SCENES FROM AN INTERVIEW

Bishop Frank J. Dewane On the Catholic Church, its challenges, and seeing the beauty in the beauty of the world

BY GUS MOLLASIS

K

EEPING THE FAITH. It’s something that has challenged people of all religions throughout time. For the Catholic Church, the challenges it has faced in recent years have certainly tested its mettle and shaken its foundation. Its members are trying to keep the faith, especially the waning younger congregation, who see themselves as more spiritual than religious. To help its followers keep the faith, the Catholic Church is standing up to confront its recent scandals with a zero-tolerance policy regarding the sexual abuse that has left many in its flock weary. Priests and bishops are also reaching out to better relate with the youth of its parishes and dioceses. The Catholic Church considers its bishops to be the successors to Jesus’s apostles. Recently, I had the honor to visit with one of them—Bishop Frank J. Dewane of the Diocese of Venice. We discussed some of the Church’s challenges, how he keeps faith and helps others do the same, as we took a look at some scenes from an interview of his life.

Tell me about your childhood. I grew up in a traditional Irish Catholic family on a farm near Denmark, Wisconsin. Small town, rural farming America. You got up early. There were always chores to do in the barn before school. For us, the church was where you went to worship, but also to socialize. How did you come into the faith? I was 33-years old and living in New York City when I entered the seminary. I went to Notre Dame for a year because you were supposed to have a degree in philosophy before you started theology. I did a year of philosophy at Notre Dame. Great experience. I’m still a bit of a Notre Dame fan to this day. It was the best year of my life. I just didn’t know it then. Because all I had to do was eat, sleep, pray and study. What is your definition of faith? Faith is believing God. Faith in something bigger than we can understand. Faith means that at some point you arrive and you turn yourself over to something that’s more than you can know, comprehend and be. Then you have to set about to live your life within that context. People express it in different ways. Some do it by praying. Some might sing. Some do it by their actions—how they treat people. What advice do you give those who lose or question their faith? Have you ever lost your faith? Lose my faith, no. I think we have to be honest when we go to prayer to the Lord. “Come on Jesus. Cut me a break on this one. I’m trying.” We have to be who we are with our heart. With our joy and our sorrow. With our challenges and what we are grateful for. Other times things turn out great. That’s when we have to remind ourselves, “I didn’t yet thank the Lord. This turned out really well.” Faith is bigger than ourselves. But living it is when the real rubber hits the road. You got to live it. I sometimes ask people, “Who here wants Jesus as a friend?” And their hands will go up. And I ask, “How often are you talking to your friend Jesus?” How are you addressing the needs of the youth in the Catholic Church? The youth are a real priority for me. They’re not our future. They’re our present. Each year we organize a youth rally. The Holy Father has World Youth Days. One year I came

Bishop visits Our Mother’s House Catholic Charities, Venice back from that event and said we can’t afford to take everyone there, so we have to do something where the youth can come here. We started with about 100 children and now, in the last two years at the community center in Punta Gorda, we take in 2,000 children. I’m cognizant when I go to parishes and don’t see a lot of young people, and that concerns and bothers me. I talk to some kids and they tell me they pray and that they’re spiritual. That usually means they don’t go to church. I’m older. I get it. I don’t judge. We’re trying to think what could be done. It’s important to ask them what more we can do. Youth is definitely a challenge. We do alright with high school kids. It’s the young adults we just don’t see. The 30-year-olds. In some cases, it’s the children who bring the parents back to church. It’s there in scripture: “The least among us…” I don’t pretend to understand the love a parent has for a child. I’m not a parent. But what I observe is tremendous—the joy you see in a parent’s face when the child says, “Let’s go to church like the others.”

74

SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2019

Do you see that as your biggest challenge? Reaching the youth in the Church? Call it the NONES. What faith are you? None. You can check this off on job applications. But the number of nones, not nuns, has gone way up and is climbing. They don’t claim their faith per say. They’re not atheists, which is another thing. They pray. Today, two young fellows who are active in a faith group and want a group to go to Rome next summer, asked me if I would go along with the group. And I said, “Wow, a whole group of kids. How big?” My answer was yes. The excitement that they have. They are alive with their faith. I have to go. I know the kids and the dad, who is half my age. I told them okay, I’ll do it. How do you compete with technology and social media? Sometimes we put our messages on social media and it resonates, and we say, “Wow!” But I don’t think we want to look to compete. We’re going to lose. We can’t go 24/7 as social media does. Some people might say that my meeting with a dad and two kids today wasn’t the best use in terms of the economy of my time and the number of people, but we have to have that interaction because we are social animals. We sit down. We talk. We engage. What most concerns you with our world today? We have to concern ourselves with immigration issues worldwide. Here and in Europe. Everywhere. The environment. The Holy Father wrote on this. What are we doing to address the whole carbon issue and rising sea levels? For an area like Florida, that’s pretty serious. That’s nothing when you consider what will happen to countries like Bangladesh where the people have little or no means to adjust and there is no one there to help them with the issue.

on the town In terms of the culture of life, I must confess I was for the death penalty, but I have changed. There’s also been much recent discussion and legislation about late-term abortion. Good. I’m glad you changed regarding the death penalty. Regarding some recent legislation on abortion, it’s pretty scary. If we value life, we have to stick with it the whole way. I have some very good friends who are very much pro-life in the traditional definition regarding the life of the baby. They’re not so pro-life on the other end of the spectrum— capital punishment. A human being has dignity. It’s not something you grant somebody. It’s something you’re born with—an innate dignity. Every person is made in the image and likeness of God. You might meet somebody and shake your head no, but even they are made in the likeness of God. When we hear of someone who kills three people, it is definitely a heinous crime, but if you keep killing people it’s never going to end. John Paul II spoke out on it and said that capital punishment was put in place when there was no better way to protect society. We now know we can do a lot more. What are your thoughts on the recent abortion legislation in Virginia and in the state of New York? That has troubled me greatly—to literally be able, an hour before delivery, to take the life of the baby. To me that’s horrible. That’s not abortion. That’s infanticide. And we condemn other countries where that is practiced for one reason or another. We have to be careful. We’re becoming that. I don’t like this thing called cosmetic engineering. That’s dangerous also. Yes, every parent would like the perfect child, I get that. They all want their child to go to Harvard. They all want a genius or the perfect athlete. I see the legislation in New York, Virginia, Alabama and Mississippi as a way to move this issue into the courts, and to take a look at “who are we?” I remember when I was in Europe in the 1980s talking to a French priest. He said to me, “You Americans are obsessed on that whole pro-life issue. It’s lost. Nothing will change.” I’m pleased to see many years later that it’s not lost. I think the Americans have a different kind of culture. I think that there is a respect for the human being. I just feel strongly about that in my life. Okay, wars can break out, but it’s a different phenomenon when we are killing our own people. What’s missing today in terms of the moral compass in people? That moral compass was taught in a day-to-day life in society at a time when things weren’t moving so fast. I don’t know if there is time today. Everyone is worried if Alice or Joey has Math and Science as part of STEM. And we teach STREAM in our school, the added letters R being Religion, because that’s who we are, and the A being Arts. There is a beauty in nature. The church has for a long time

been the conservers of beauty. Pope Francis is often saying beautiful things about beauty. John Paul II spoke about it. Pope Benedict did. We need to speak about the beauty of beauty in the world. You just returned from the Holy Land. Please describe that feeling to a believer who has not been there. I don’t want to complicate it and use a lot of words, but this is the land where Jesus walked. The footsteps. To walk near the sea of Galilee or go on boat into the sea. There are some tourist things, sure, but you have to stay focused and within yourself and say, “They put their nets out here.” Then you go down to the Jordan River. The baptism. Is it the exact spot? I’m not one who has to know exactly where John the Baptist stood and where Jesus was in the water, but this is the Jordan River. Then you see where the monuments have been put up over time. It’s a meeting place of all the faith groups. The Orthodox Church is there and it’s beautiful. You go down to the garden, which is supposedly the Garden of Gethsemane, and there are all these old olive trees there. I don’t know the geography of that whole area well enough. But for me it’s enough just to go to this area, sit down and pray there a little while. You imagine the scene with Jesus in the Garden and Judas comes along, and you pray never to be that. You imagine Peter pulling out the sword and chopping off the ear of the guard and Christ putting it back on him. And Peter becoming the first Pope. It tells me to check yourself once in a while. Yes, we have to listen to the Lord, but I can’t do my own interpretation. Sit with it for a while. Take whatever emotion that comes over you at the time and take it to prayer. Not just at the moment, but later, when no one is around and it’s quiet. I let it hit me as I bring it back. What spoke to me? What was Christ saying? What is it that I need to do differently in my life to be more Christ-like? When am I Peter? We are all capable of sin. We see that in Jesus’ reaction to Judas. Sometimes when we read scripture, try to be one of the characters in the scene. You don’t want to be Judas. Sometimes we need to play all those characters in the scene because that’s when we learn a great deal about ourselves. Regarding Catholic Charities, and all the good it does, tell us something about this philanthropic arm that especially makes you proud. I’m proud of what it does. We have to learn in this day and age that we do it in partnership. Nobody can do it all. You reach out and find partners. I’m a big one on housing. It’s hard for a family to stay cohesive and together when they don’t have a place to live. Cars are not so great to live in. How do we address this and what do we do? We always have to look at where’s the need, what can we contribute, and how do we partner with somebody to make the most of that.

“ Sin and evil, which is not talked about enough. No one uses that word. Evil. There is evil out there. We have to acknowledge it. “

How do you think the Catholic Church is handling its sexual abuse scandal on the local level and in Rome? I think it’s sad that we have had to do it. Here in the Diocese when things come up, we try to address it immediately. Sometimes somebody knows one side of the story and they hadn’t heard the other, and they’re absolutely livid about this and that. Sometimes you know a greater story. Locally, we do move quickly. If we have to take someone out, if somebody comes in and says this happened or that happened, maybe with a priest or with an educator, boom, it has to be moved on. Recently, there was a child from one of our programs, and they needed a ride home. The person in charge of the program was here after hours and he could not give him a ride home. We can’t do that anymore. You have to call somebody and make sure there are two adults in the car. We don’t have that luxury. And this is maybe a very grass roots example of what we have to do now. We have to take those precautions because abuse has crept in. We now see action being the responsibility of the bishop when he learns something. We’ve seen the Conference of Bishops try to act in certain way and Rome said don’t vote on that. Being in America is different from the universal church. It teaches a different vision. I spent time in Rome, and it’s agreed that this has to be a world-wide vision. In America, we have many lay people who are highly educated, and in some other countries they don’t have many lay people who are educated to the point of being a specialist, therapist, psychiatrist or psychologist to look at some of these issues. I can put a board together in no time. There are challenges out there in getting on the same page and gaining the trust back. In June, (Note: The Conference of Catholic Bishops was held in June after this interview) there will be a much clearer vision going forward. It’s a trust issue. And we want to regain that trust of the faithful, of the goodness. My going out after all that happened,

76

listening to people in all of the parishes, I barely could get up to speak without knowing I had to say something on this. People can’t think that I’m in la-la land or that I don’t realize that we have a problem. We do have a problem and it needs to be addressed. It needs to be dealt with. When there are offenses they need to be addressed. Some of the priests get upset when I have to go and confront someone and say, “Father I heard this. This person has said this.” Those are not pleasant conversations. And I think they think that I am supposed to help them. And that’s true. But I’m supposed to help everybody. The Catholic faithful, everybody included. This more recent wave that we saw, where bishops weren’t acting properly, and were not reporting sufficiently on inappropriate actions, whether it was priests or lay people, they knew them and wanted the best for them. Parishioners are livid when we remove a priest and say, “Father would never do this. We know our priest.” And I want to say, “Hang on. We’ve got a problem.” I can’t say that to the person at the time that they don’t know them. They may in fact have given a great deal, but there is that difficulty that they have. In speaking of Judas earlier, I think that the other side of it is we have to all know that we are human and there are times when we sin. Sin and evil, which is not talked about enough. No one uses that word. Evil. There is evil out there. We have to acknowledge it. We have to seek the protection of God from that evil. Do you feel that America is still a Christian country? Yes and no. I do think it’s Christian in that I go out and see people loving God and their neighbor. I see an even broader group who do good works and deeds. As a country, we are doers, and we judge our self by those visible deeds. Then I think how many countries have the death penalty. Very few. I think we have to respect other faiths and each year we do something with the Jewish community. We have the same roots. I get nervous about some of the

on the town legislation we spoke of earlier, when we look at the number of abortions that occur in this country. When I look at the amount of addiction to things like opioids. Well what does that have to do with Christianity? It’s a reflection of our moral compass. Those things bother me. There is no conscience in an economy. It’s the individuals who run the economy. That’s where the moral dimension enters in and sometimes, I don’t feel they leave enough room to hear that moral voice. Finish the following sentences… A good Christian is one who… Prays. To me prayer is essential because… You’re talking to God. A good priest is one who… Has a good prayer life. Does it ever surprise you just how forgiving The Lord is? No. Mercy is a tremendous component. And I’m grateful that he’s so forgiving. Is there a favorite parable, verse or story from the Bible that especially inspires you? There is phrase in scripture that says, “When I was young, I went where I wanted to go and did what I wanted to do. When I’m older, another will lead me to where I do not wish to go.” God has been so good to me. What’s the biggest thing missing today in our society? Respect. What gives you hope? Young people. Hope is a gift from the Lord. But really people, especially the young people of God, give me hope. What’s the single thing you would eliminate in the world today? Weapons of all kind. What’s the one thing you hope everyone has in abundance? My initial response is grace. But I would probably say food. What do you think heaven is like? I think heaven is joy. The Lord has put us on the earth to live and there are trying things here. Following this life, we will have one filled with joy, and we’ll see people who have passed away, like parents and children. I think it is joy.

HASPEL + HOOKS Who ever knew studying tort law could be so uniting? For mega-smart and beautiful Erica and the charming and brilliant Dan, their decision to study together for their tort law final would result not in a conflict (as tort law does), but in the start of a perfect, uncontested union. After Erica attended the University of Colorado Boulder for her undergraduate studies, she then went to Northwestern University School of Law. Dan attended Mississippi State University, also followed by Northwestern University School of Law. They met during their first year in law school and agreed to study together for that life-altering tort final. They would find out that night just how much they had in common. JACOBS + MALLOCH He’s tall, dark and handsome. She’s blonde, beautiful and strong. When they met a few years ago, it was through an unusual introduction. Sabrina, an incredibly gifted massage therapist, works magic on her clients’ health needs, many of whom see her on a regular basis. One of these clients decided Sabrina just may be a good match for his son. She never dreamed that introduction by a father of his son would change their lives forever. No, this isn’t the start of a Nora Roberts romance novel, although it could be. It’s the real-life romance of Cameron and Sabrina and their happily ever after. But let’s start at the beginning. Cameron is the son of long-time Sarasota residents Dina and Graeme Malloch. He attended Out-of-Door Academy and graduated Auburn University. Now, he works in business development for Stabil Concrete Pavers in Sarasota. Sabrina is the daughter of Sarasotans Chris Jacobs and Bonnie Brown. 82

Sabrina went to Bayshore High and graduated Keiser University. She is self-employed as one of the top massage therapists in town (Massage Therapy by Sabrina). When they started dating, the pair became inseparable from the start. The connection was instant—their chemistry and compatibility apparent to all who know them. Never ones to want anyone to fuss over them, Cameron and Sabrina chose to elope. When they learned of the three-day waiting period for a marriage license in Florida, they decided to plan a very intimate ceremony 20 days later at the beautiful home of Cameron’s parents on the water in St. Armands Key. The weather was absolutely perfect. A magnificent sunset and a full moon created the perfect backdrop on their special night for their family and closest friends to enjoy. A violinist played their chosen song—Eric Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight. Given Cameron’s Scottish heritage, there was a surprise bagpipe serenade by the talented Cassandra Calo. The evening was deliciously catered by Café L’Europe on St. Armands. It was a beautiful night that Cameron and Sabrina will never forget. In fact, they had such a good time that they decided to do it all over again. This time, family and friends who were not available to attend the quickly gathered November ceremony, got to celebrate with the couple at an exquisite brunch at the Sarasota Yacht Club on April 20, 2019. There was lots of dancing, laughter and good times for the oldest down to the tiniest in attendance. The very next day, the dashing Cameron and the stunning Sabrina left for an exciting three-week honeymoon. They traveled through Italy, Switzerland and France—taking a romantic Vespa tour through Rome, paragliding over Interlaken and savoring some of the finest cuisine in Paris. Education MATTERS By Ryan G. Van Cleave

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT AT FORTY CARROTS In 1993, Forty Carrots was created through the shared vision of Betsy Kane-Hartnett and Diane Weiss, who wanted to strengthen and enrich the lives of local families through education, outreach and support. Today, Forty Carrots is doing exactly that by providing one of the best preschool experiences in our community. But Forty Carrots does much more than just deliver first-rate education to some 90 preschoolers. They also impact the lives of 4,500+ more people per year through their parenting education programs and mental health services. Why don’t more people, then, know about these other vital ways in which Forty Carrots helps the community? That’s largely due to the stigma around mental health, it seems. Chief Executive Officer Michelle Kapreilian notes that “while many people find no problem in having a once-a-year physical, they’re far more resistant to taking care of their mental health in the same manner. Many wrongly believe that having any mental health concern is a sign of weakness.” Nothing could be further from the truth, and that’s part of the message Forty Carrots is committed to delivering. Though Forty Carrots is primarily focused on serving the needs of children 8 and under, their mental health services are for the entire family since healthy familial relationships are vital to a child’s well-being. Kapreilian notes that their goal is to help these children become adults who are responsible, capable, caring people who are able to effectively navigate the complex world ahead of them. That happens by not looking at a negative

84

SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2019

behavior and trying to fix it, but by uncovering WHY it happens and then working together on overcoming the root cause. Carla Figueiredo-Johanns, the Clinical Supervisor of the Child & Family Therapy Services, says that the majority of the mental health work with children is preventative. While they have a busy clinic on Tuttle Avenue, they send out their seven full-time therapists to title 1 schools—Tuttle, Brentwood, and Fruitville Elementaries. At the first two sites, at-risk students receive individual counseling sessions. At Fruitville, they hold small group session of similarly-aged at-risk kids and offer support while helping the students work on developing their own coping skills. “Whether we meet at our clinic or at schools,” says Figueiredo-Johanns, “our main focus is to bring families together. Strong parental and family support are key for making a difference. The children have to hear the same messages at home that they do from us.” One of the most common misconceptions about mental health and children, she reports, is that people think “Oh, they’re just kids—they’ll get over it.” Yes, they can get past early childhood trauma—and studies show that at least 1 in 5 kids are exposed to serious trauma in childhood—but that only happens with supportive adults who can help them process it in a manner that makes them feel safe and secure. “If you don’t have that ability to process it in healthy ways, then it tends to emerge in really negative ways when they’re older,” she explains. “The latest research in mental health shows that emergency room visits for children ages 5 to 18 who attempted suicide or had thoughts of suicide nearly doubled over a nine-year period in the US.” In 2015 alone,

on the town

that translated into 1.12 million visits. Add in that nearly 50% of these involved kids ages 5-10 and you start to realize the scope of this issue that every community—including a supportive, affluent one like Sarasota—is facing. Kapreilian adds that those numbers aren’t strongly correlated to a child’s socioeconomic situation. Families of all types can run into mental health challenges, and that’s why Forty Carrots does all it can to help educate people. 93% of their clients receive free services, thanks to support from donors and organizational partners. Others receive services on a sliding scale, according to their ability to pay. Something Figueiredo-Johanns is proud of is when she receives phone calls from families who took part in Partners in Play baby classes, and now their child is eight or ten and has an issue. “It feels good that they’re reaching out to us so many years later, because we’ve been there for them in the past. They’re putting their faith in us.” Another indicator of the many successes Forty Carrots demonstrates is through those who work there. Take Kapreilian, for example. She’s been Chief Executive Officer for seven years, but prior to that, she was a longtime volunteer and a mom there. “There are tons of us who’ve been around since the start,” she notes. “This is a very special, inclusive place. I love it here.” If that weren’t the

case, the turnover rate of employees and volunteers would be dramatically higher since there are so many other local social service organizations to choose from. As a result, the demand for their services is so high—and climbing—that they’re planning major expansions in the near future. Kapreilian hopes they’re able to double the mental health and parenting education services they offer over the next five years. While Forty Carrots currently utilizes 30 different area locations to deliver their services, they need more vans to get between them, and they’re looking for an additional building to house more of these, as well. Forty Carrots gets it—they believe that every single child deserves the right to a childhood that’s emotionally and physically safe, and that’s filled with nurturing relationships and positive learning experiences. Thanks to the efforts of the dedicated people at Forty Carrots, more and more of our children will grow up this way, and that will lead to our community being rich with capable, caring, and respectful young people. Meet Artist

NANCY HIELSCHER Originally from Chicago, Nancy Hielscher relocated to Sarasota in 1979. Having graduated from the American Academy of Art-Chicago, she has continued her artistic studies at Ringling Collage of Art and Design in workshops taught by Tim Jaeger, Jean Blackburn and at WildAcres with Cassandra James. While painting is her first love, she continues to work full-time as the Creative and Marketing Director for John Cannon Homes. The visual images of locally sourced fruit, vegetables and greenery have always intrigued her, and over the years she has accomplished a portfolio of the often-overlooked beauty that can be found in neighboring parks, markets and gardens. The striking, simple subject matter that often goes unnoticed in their original setting is captured and richly rendered by her strong brushstrokes on a brightly colored underpainting. Nancy works in both acrylic and oils and applies them to either square canvas or wood panels. Her paintings work well alone or in a grouping. She continues to satisfy her visual appetite by painting the beauty of locally sourced fruits and vegetables. Recently, her paintings were featured at GAZE Modern gallery in Sarasota with fellow artist, Linda Driggs. She was also a featured artist in a group exhibition at The Studio of Gulf and Pine in Anna Maria. Her work can be found in many private collections in the Midwest and the Tampa Bay area. You can view additional paintings at nhielscher.myportfolio.com, or contact Nancy Hielscher at goodart13@msn.com for pricing and additional information. JULY 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

SCARE UP SOME SUMMER FUN WITH THESE THREE THRILLERS

Lyle manages a straightforward plot with a real sense of humor that doesn’t feel out of place.

SUNSHINE STATE: A JAKE LONGLY THRILLER by D.P. Lyle

“ Ferencik does a fine job of making the landscape, terrain, and creatures Lily encounters feel National-Geographic authentic.

SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2019

Author D.P. Lyle’s latest from local press Oceanview Publishing, a thriller entitled Sunshine State, is built on an engaging premise. An anonymous benefactor has hired Jack Longly, an ex-big league baseball player (and reluctant PI, working for his dad’s firm), and Nicole Jamison to investigate the seven murders attributed to serial killer Billy Wayne Baker, who claims he only committed five of them. When asked which ones, he refuses to say. “If I did, they’d say your investigation was biased. That rush to judgment crap. When this is all done, I want folks to know the truth. I want them to believe it. In my experience, knowing and believing don’t always go together.”

The problem is, Baker had the motive, means, and opportunity for each murder. Worse, his DNA was found at each scene, as well. Can his claim of only being responsible for five be true? Is he simply trying to game the system or grab a few more fleeting minutes of fame? Longly might be more interested in the beach bar he owns than in being a PI who works for his dad, but he’s not about to leave any job half-done. Trust Longly to dig deep enough to find the truth, no matter what it is. And it all starts in Pine Key, Florida, where three of the murders occurred. Lyle manages a straightforward plot with a real sense of humor that doesn’t feel out of place. It’s a good, solid read. If this sounds like your kind of murder and mayhem, you might also enjoy Lyle’s Dub Walker series, his Samantha Cody series, and the other two titles featuring PI Jake Longly. Rating:

INTO THE JUNGLE by Erica Ferencik Author Erica Ferencik’s second novel, Into the Jungle, shows that her debut, The River at Night, was no fluke. In this new story, Lily Bushwold wants to escape her life in America’s foster care system by taking a job as a teacher in Cochabamba,

arts&culture Bolivia. It took a while, but she finally steals enough cash to pay for the trip and off she goes.

him, and along the way, she encounters ruthless poachers, pythons and a menacing indigenous tribe, among a host of other dangers.

As most too-good-to-be-true things are, it WAS too good to be true. The opportunity falls through. But Lily stays in Bolivia and finds the day-to-day hustling to be as unpleasant there as it was in the states. What now? She then finds love in Omar, the handsome local who’s forgone his life as a hunter in a remote jungle village to try out city life.

Unlike most thrillers where there’s a murderer on the loose or an MIA person, this is the thrilling life of one person’s journey through some of the most inhospitable places and situations on the planet. Ferencik does a fine job of making the landscape, terrain, and creatures Lily encounters feel National-Geographic authentic. This is a compelling, exciting read.

But Omar learns that his four-year-old nephew was killed by a jaguar. When he decides to head back into the jungle to seek vengeance, Lily chooses to go along with

. . . thick with menace and ambiance . . . if you like the feel and style of the British TV show Sherlock and/or Victorian crime dramas, you’ll quite likely appreciate this story, too.

British writer John Matthews’ new historical thriller takes the Jack the Ripper lore to a new place—in this case, across the pond, as they say. It’s 1891 in New York City, and a prostitute has been brutally murdered. What else can the authorities do but pair up one of their new “untouchable” detectives (Joseph Argenti) with one of the original English Ripper criminologists (Finley Jameson) to try to solve this disturbing case?

This odd pairing of lawmen works well. Neither can be bought or strong-armed by the city’s #1 gangster, Michael Tierney, and both also seem to have a soft spot in their hearts for the downtrodden (waifs, strays, etc.). Jameson is a bit clueless at times and engages in some bizarre behavior, but he remains likable, nonetheless. One of the strengths of this novel is the vivid sense of setting. Readers will get

a good feel for the melting pot that is America during this vibrant time in history, where the barriers between the rich and the poor parts of the city were so clearly delineated. Add in the open sewers and essentially nonexistent sanitation, and you’ve got a gritty, smelly environment that matches well with the growing body count and taunting letters. But are they by the real Ripper or a copycat? Some readers could find things a bit slow at times, but the book’s still thick with menace and ambiance. In short, if you like the feel and style of the British TV show Sherlock and/or Victorian crime dramas, you’ll quite likely appreciate this story, too.

Healthy Summer Dining By Rick Dakan

Downtown Sarasota continues to bloom with new restaurants, but it has also seen some established eateries undergo significant shifts. Many of the changes lean into the current trend of healthier eating, with more plant-based dishes for those of us who want to cut back on the cholesterol and do our part for the environment by consuming less meat. More and more of my own diet veers vegan these days, so I’m excited to have some tasty new options.

I’d only eaten at Louie’s Modern a few times, an expensive fine dining restaurant with lovely modern decor but which never topped my list of special occasion dining. Then I recently drove by the Palm Avenue location and noticed that, seemingly overnight, Louie’s was gone and Lemon Tree Kitchen had taken its place. I was confused, sure that I’d just walked by Louie’s a few weeks earlier. Was I seeing things? How could a whole new restaurant open so quickly? I needed answers. “We closed Louie’s on a Sunday, brought in the whole team, and eight days later we opened Lemon Tree Kitchen,” Joe Seidensticker, CEO of Tableside Restaurant Group, explained to me. The company had been looking for somewhere to open a healthy dining concept for a while. “It’s a part of my lifestyle and what our group stands for. Eat well, eat right, know what you’re eating. Know your food sources. We love what’s happening in downtown and we didn’t want to

Lemon Tree Kitchen have to search when it was right there for us.” The Lemon Tree crew only started on the menu a few weeks before the remodel, and were developing dishes in the kitchen at the same time the restaurant was getting its miraculously fast facelift. “It’s all built around what we like and what we like to eat,” Seidensticker explains. “A restaurant that addresses the needs of all our guests and their diet restrictions: gluten, different diets, vegan, vegetarian, paleo. We built a menu that made everyone feel comfortable to come in to eat.” The healthy, plant-based menu at Lemon Tree Kitchen isn’t just accommodating to different diets, it’s inventive and fun. bedeviled eggs are a visually playful twist on devilled eggs, substituting turnips for the egg white and tofu for the yolk. My favorite vegan dish was the vegan pizza, which I had with a cauliflower crust (wheat is also available of course). I was skeptical, but the cashew cream, shaved pear, balsamic vinegar and truffle toppings were as rich and delicious as any pizza, and the crust perfectly crispy. It’s not all vegan, and there’s something here for everyone, just as Seidensticker promised. Louie’s lives on with Louie’s Tribute Burger (Brasstown grass-fed beef, fontina/manchego, onion crisps, beef booster sauce, toasted brioche bun, and french fries). There’s Steak Frites for the carnivore and Wood-Grilled Cauliflower Steak with chimichurri sauce for the vegetarians. There’s a small brunch menu and a delicious-looking dessert list. Open for lunch and dinner, and still evolving, I look forward to trying many more of this new restaurant’s intriguing dishes.

STATE STREET 1533 State St, Sarasota (941) 951-1533 Tuesday – Saturday: Lunch 11:30 am to 2:30 pm Dinner 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday & Sunday Brunch: 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. State Street has undergone a constant evolution since it opened several years ago, and I’ve always enjoyed my meals there. Their latest menu embraces a host of healthy options, and the kind of mix and match featured bowls that are a bit trendy right now. The State Street menu’s graphic design isn’t doing their delicious food any favors, as it’s not clear at all that diners are meant to combine a “Protein Preference” (fresh catch, salmon, steak, pork belly, chicken, octopus, mushrooms, or tofu) with one of more than a dozen interesting “Chef’s Special Garden Selections.” Half of the garden selections are vegan, and include inventive combinations like curried calabaza squash with sticky rice, and brussels sprouts hash with Japanese mayo and duck egg. The “create your own bowls” aren’t the only option, and old State Street favorites, like the burger of the week and the decadent baked lobster mac n’ cheese, are still on the menu. And of course there’s the added appeal of the delicious and finely wrought craft cocktails, which are always a treat. After all, not everything needs to be healthy!

Laughing MATTERS THE ONE ABOUT BEING FUNNY By Ryan G. Van Cleave | Illustrations by Darcy Kelly-Laviolette

T

he strangest thing happened to me the other day. I was invited to teach a humor writing class at Ringling College of Art and Design for spring 2020. The first thing that came to mind? Did I leave the stove on? The second thing that came to mind? Huh?

Richard “Tricky Dick” Nixon once proclaimed: I am not a crook. In that same spirit of important bumper-sticker-worthy proclamations, let me add my own non-political 2 cents: I am not a comedian. How do I know? Three reasons:

It eventually came to me that the reason people think I might have the yuktastic DNA required to successfully run a humor writing class is because of this monthly column. (I was going to insert a snarky, self-demeaning comment here—and I had a good one, I promise—but I nearly choked on a Triscuit a few moments ago, and in the ensuing hubbub, I misplaced that zinger.) But I’ll let you in on a secret. 131.5% of the things that I write about in this column actually happened. From my perspective, this isn’t a humor column. It’s far more like exposé writing. Or some kind of whack-a-doodle biography. Or the result of channeling one of those voices I hear in my head.

1) I get fan mail from Sarasota Scene readers all the time— read “all the time” as “once”—that comes out and says it plainly. “Hey. I’ve got a Barack Obama Chia Pet that’s more loads of laughs than you.” 2) I continue to try to revive the expression “Rock on!” to no lasting effect. 3) My family is my humor litmus test and either they’re broken, or I’m really good at failing to create snickers (the ha ha stuff, not the candy).

insider Exhibit A from this past Tuesday. Daughter: My teacher said we had to create our own family crest and motto. Me: Try “I intend to live forever. So far, so good.” Pair that with crossed fingers. Daughter: What is your major malfunction?

Exhibit B from this morning. Me: (Sitting on the couch, wearing socks on my hands.) Wife: What are you doing? Me: My toes are protesting. Wife: Oh, for Pete’s sake.

Exhibit C, right this very moment. Me: (At my computer desk, guffawing at the sudden realization that my car is powered by dinosaurs.) I have yet more evidence, but honestly, do you need it? After this overwhelming onslaught of reasons to say “Nope!” do you still really think that I’m the right choice to teach other people—kids, no less!—how to tickle the world’s funny bone? If you’re committed to this course of action, then here’s what you need to do pronto. Step 1: Buy 500 copies of Sarasota Scene. Step 2: Arrange them in your backyard to form the words “HELP ME!” Step 3: Await further instructions from your toaster. Me? I’ll be trying to convince my pastor pal to change the sign out front to “Hipster Jesus Loved You Before You Were Cool.” Watch for it. PS—I remembered that zinger from before! The Triscuit-blocked one? In retrospect, it’s actually not that funny. (See what I mean?) Are you ALSO exactly the wrong person to teach a humor writing class next spring? Want to share with me what your own humor major malfunction is? Do you have a hankering to confess the twenty-six reasons why you’re not the class clown, you were never the class clown, and you’ll never be the class clown? (Or do you secretly want to get on the waiting list to take this class which I’m not going to teach? I can maybe swing that, if you care to try to bribe me with one of those muchballyhooed Barack Obama Chia Pets!) That’s it for now. As always, I’m not at ryan@sarasotascene.com.
