f r o m t h e • p ubl i s h e r e live in a truly amazing place full of all different kinds of beauty. The seascapes are amazing, and our community features, both natural and manmade, are a wonder to behold. Even the people are beautiful! One of our most treasured amenities of this sort is Selby Gardens. I am very fortunate to live not only close, but walking distance to these botanical gardens. Whether I’m simply taking in the vegetative beauty, or attending an event, it’s always a charming experience. One recent event I attended at Selby was the performance by global icon Patti Smith back in April. Not only is she an amazing performer, but during the on-stage interview I found her stories captivating as well. She claims that her voice has changed over the years, and although that may be, I still found it to be spellbinding. The exciting announcement that Smith will be the first artist in residence at Selby is both wonderful and innovative, which is in line with their progressive trajectory. Selby has been on a roll, blending mixed media to its exhibitions, partnering with art organizations (visual and performance), while at the same time reinforcing its botanical heritage. They’ve truly been building up their campus inside and out. Even their new parking lot, once complete, will complement the facility nicely. And they’re not the only ones building UP in Sarasota. I would like to congratulate Caldwell Trust Company on their new offices. A few years ago, the company purchased the 86-year-old Cain-Wilson Building on Orange Avenue and decided to renovate. I think we were all surprised at the length of time it took to complete the building, but the result is spectacular. Well worth the wait, the handsome pre-World War II property has truly been made state-of-art. There are many changes and growths like this happening in the Downtown area, some more controversial than others. In June, the Historic Preservation Board refused to allow a developer to tear down the Mira Mar buildings on Palm Avenue, with many residents feeling the loss would be just another alteration to Sarasota’s character. While we don’t want our gorgeous city to look like a concrete highrise patch near the Gulf, we also need a broader view on development on both sides of this question. As the city gets 8

younger neighborhoods, it needs to continue to be more conducive to work, recreation, and personal life balance; a livable city with a variety of amenities and gathering places while maintaining its charm. In many ways, that’s what Sarasota already is! A wealth of kindness, community, and events.Throughout the past season, we saw many great performances, and enjoyed the festivities at many successful fundraisers. We as a community persevered and traversed the many hurdles we faced during this past social season. We became more innovative and flexible, all the while maintaining our enthusiasm as we inched our way back to in-person gatherings. I recall one week during the height of the season in which I attended multiple events, rotating out of three different tuxedos – I haven’t done that in a few years! Uncertainty seems to be finally behind us now. Truly we had to be a community. To me, that is beautiful. For this, I salute all of you, and thank you for your participation, leadership, and generosity. After what was the busiest season we have had in years, I will be traveling this summer to the Northeast and the Northwest. Among my lengthier stops will be to British Columbia to welcome a new grandson. I am very much looking forward seeing family, and enjoying some time to just wade at the beach and enjoy each other’s company (although I do find the north Pacific Ocean very cold—I guess I am becoming a true Floridian!). My older grandson, Swift, now 19 months old, has started soccer, plays hockey with his dad, is comfortable on a paddle board, and swims quite well for his age. In hopes of getting him engrained in my favorite game as well, I am bringing with me a couple of lefty baseball mitts for Swift and his dad. If you go by parentage and measurements at one year old, Swift will likely be 6’5”, 220 lb when he is done growing. Tampa Bay Rays, take notice! You may have a powerful lefthander on his way. Once home, I’m looking forward to being rested and recharged for what the next season brings. It is so wonderful to take part in the Scene with everyone one of you.

“I Really Like Everything About The Place!” “I remember when we were looking at Sarasota Bay Club, I said to my son and daughter-in-law, I want you to visit retirement communities and tell me what you think, honestly, with no thought to what the finances are. When I asked for their conclusions they said, it's a no brainer – Sarasota Bay Club. And I asked, why? They said, it’s the energy – you can just feel it. And I think it was the smartest thing I ever did when I decided to move here.” To experience the SBC energy for yourself, please schedule a private sales appointment and showing of available luxury residences.

The Exchange Turns Second-Hand Goods into First-Class Arts By Sylvia Whitman

Many know the fun of treasure hunting in The Exchange, the sprawling consignment shop at 539 S. Orange Avenue in Sarasota. But less well known, according to CEO Karen Koblenz, is the nonprofit’s role in supporting the arts of the local community.

Sarasota Opera (Sarasota Youth Opera, The Secret World of Og), and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (2022-23 main stage season). The scholarship portion is supporting four high school and 11 college students.

“With our ever-changing and growing population, I am always delighted to share the history, mission, and impact of The Exchange,” says Koblenz. “The organization does so much good in so many ways. Our primary purpose is to support the arts of our community. We give away grants as well as scholarships, grants to local art organizations and scholarships to students who are pursuing higher education in the arts.”

Unlike many nonprofits, The Exchange raises less than 10% of its funding through gifts. With the help of about 265 volunteers and a staff of 21, the consignment operation generates the money, creating a ripple effect. “We pay our consignors a higher percentage than most consignment stores—60 percent,” says Koblenz. “And with over 5,000 active consignors to whom we pay more than $2 million annually, as that money is spent it further benefits the community.”

Since the organization’s founding in 1962, those awards have totaled more than $9 million. No capital campaigns, no endowments—The Exchange“gives money toward programming that the community can enjoy,” says Koblenz. This year’s disbursement of $310,500 is funding organizations ranging from the Arts and Culture Alliance (for the Inspire Sarasota! family festival) and Circus Arts Conservatory (Sailor Circus Academy Holiday Show 2022) to the Manatee Concert Band (2022-23 Neel Concerts),

A NOT-FOR-PROFIT BIG BUSINESS In 2016, the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce named The Exchange its “retail business of the year.” The nonprofit’s commercial model is no happenstance. Led by Elizabeth “Liz” Lindsay, a trio of women were looking in 1962 for a sustainable way to support the Florida West Coast Symphony Orchestra. A daughter of an engineering professor, Lindsay had earned a B.S. degree in construction before marrying into the family that owned

BARBARA COLWELL

“When I moved to Sarasota, I was looking for a way to be involved in a program aligned with my passions. I was attracted to The Exchange for its mission to give to the arts. Our family’s lives revolved around the arts since the children were very small—dance, theater, singing—they have been performing since the age of three. Of my four children, two of my daughters became professional dancers. The next best thing to watching my daughters perform is volunteering at The Exchange. Knowing my efforts at The Exchange work toward the success of other aspiring performers and my work assists in supporting the arts is rewarding. I am happy to be a part of this wonderful organization!”

PER RASMUSSEN “Volunteering at The Exchange introduces you to so many people, both fellow volunteers and customers. Every day is a joy!”

GRACE RIKER “The Exchange has been a Sarasota landmark for

the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. As the fledgling nonprofit grew, it moved six times before buying its present site in 1969. The bank asked the women for guarantees from their husbands—common practice in those days. But as Lindsay told Scene in a 2012 interview, she refused. Look at the worth of the business, she said.

opportunity; for the arts, education, shopping, and volunteerism. There is goodness in everything it stands for.”

DIANE PAGE This volunteer at The Exchange toured with The Cars in the 80s and sang background vocals for The Lace, the only solo studio album by American rock and roll singer Benjamin Orr of The Cars.

JANET ZINNER Another volunteer at The Exchange, Janet is the mother of Nick Zinner, a record producer and guitarist

Lindsay, who died earlier this year at age 96, served on The Exchange’s board for 60 years. Her love of theater, particularly Asolo Rep, showed up in the expansion of grant making. So, too, did her belief in education. In the late ‘70s, The Exchange began underwriting local students who aspired to careers in the arts. Lindsay herself returned to school in her fifties, in the inaugural Executive MBA class at USF. In honor of her six decades of devotion to local arts, this year The Exchange is awarding a special $60,000 grant to Asolo Rep for its 2022-2023 season. Although details have not been finalized, says Koblenz, the board is planning to establish an “Elizabeth Lindsay Arts in Education Grant Program” focused on instilling and fostering love of the arts in grades K-12.

ROWAN MARSH “’Do what you love!’ This is a great exhortation of parents to their children and to hopefully to themselves about their own lives especially once their children are leading their own lives. Lucky parents enjoy fulfilling careers. Even luckier ones enjoy watching their children bloom in their careers. The ‘love/luck’ duo has blessed me all my life. As an entrepreneur, I was lucky enough to retire at the age of 47 from a career I loved. What a gift! Rowan Marsh & Son and Actor Patrick J. Adams

Multiple volunteer gigs in the last 25 years have opened so many new worlds of interest and kinship for me. A drop into The Exchange on a visit to Sarasota, we knew this was the town for us! The Exchange is a very fun, well-run place in support of artistic venues and people. My world! Within weeks we had bought a house and I had signed up as a volunteer at The Exchange...To know that one’s, albeit small, participation helps to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to Sarasota’s arts community is a

to accommodate its growth. They started building a cash reserve to launch the expansion effort, and in 2017, the organization purchased an adjacent Short Stop convenience store and another parcel, converting the space into a furniture department and a volunteer/ staff parking lot. That store expansion, plus a store remodel, required an investment of approximately $3 million, which was funded by its reserves and a five-year business loan. Despite the 2020 pandemic mandatory shut down, The Exchange paid off the loan three months early. It was a testament to its many loyal shoppers, consignors, and volunteers who understood the mission of The Exchange and its impact, that the organization was able to weather the economic hardship many businesses suffered during the pandemic and stay ahead of its expenses. It is because of this expansion growth that The Exchange is now aiming to award a total of $500,000 annually in arts-related grants and scholarships. The Exchange sells close to 13,000 items per month, from zippered red Angel Steps Shoes boots ($13.49) to paired bronze Singha Temple guardian foo dogs ($413.95) to a handmade wool Pakistani Serapi rug ($11,663.99). Prices drop at regular intervals, an automatic tiered markdown reflected on the tag. Most consignments sell within the first month, but Items that remain unpurchased in the store for more than 60 days are donated to The Exchange, which in turn donates these items to Pines of Sarasota or the Salvation Army.

joy. Not to mention the great pleasure it is to meet so many other very accomplished people busy volunteering here too!” Rowan’s children are entrenched in the arts. Her son is actor Patrick J. Adams, who had the lead role on the TV series Suits, and is currently on Broadway in the multiple Tony award nominated revival of Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out. Her youngest daughter, Ariel Adams, has been featured in multiple publications as one of Canada’s top chefs. She has been invited to audition for Canada’s Top Chef competition. Her eldest daughter, Meredith Adams, is a happy blend of entrepreneurial and save-the-world spirit. Her company is busy installing windmills and solar panels all over Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands). According to Rowan, “My “love/luck” cup runneth over!” JULY 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE

—Karen Koblenz The highly experienced and discerning team at The Exchange accepts items Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, and on any given morning, 200 consignors may show up. High-end art, jewelry, and furniture require preview photos and an expert going-over. One-of-a-kind treasures even make news sometimes. “We once had a painting from the Elvis estate, and that hit all of the media,” says Koblenz. Shoppers lined up outside the store. “It sold within minutes.” A fun moment, she recalls. On another occasion, a young man saved the money to purchase a $20,000 championship ring. It took a bit of time for the young man to save the money, so the consignor pulled it back until the young man could afford it. After he bought it, he donated it to another nonprofit. True kindness all the way around! The eclectic inventory has put The Exchange on the map even as a tourist attraction. And its mission draws celebrity shoppers, says Koblenz, as well as arts-loving volunteers and consignors. Some of them have children “who have accomplished great things and have big names” in music, drama, and fine arts. “There’s just a lot of kindness and generosity in this world,” says Koblenz.

THE

BEAUTY OF LIVING ART art & nature converge at Selby Gardens

by ryan g. van cleave Every travel guide offering Things To Do in Sarasota includes Marie Selby Botanical Gardens—for good reason, notes Jennifer Rominiecki, who’s served as Selby Gardens’ President and CEO since 2015. “We offer 45 acres of bayfront sanctuaries that connect our community and visitors with air plants of the world, native nature, and our regional history,” she says. For those of you—like myself!—who are slightly baffled by the idea of “air plants,” Rominiecki explains what they are as opposed to terrestrial plants, meaning plants that grow out of the ground. “So, air plants thrive in the air and get their nutrients from the air, and they grow on other plants in the tree canopy,” she says. “Like orchids, for instance.” Selby Gardens has the world’s best scientifically documented collection of orchids, which makes sense since orchids are one of the key air plants that they focus on. Prior to coming to Sarasota seven years ago, Rominiecki had a series of interesting jobs. She started out in visual art at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, which is where she’s from. Then she moved on to performing art at the Metropolitan Opera. And then, finally, she ended up in what JULY 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE

she calls “living art” at the New York Botanical Garden. After that, she was recruited for her current position at Selby Gardens, and she has since been fully committed to a career focused on living art. One of the things Rominiecki likes most about her Selby Gardens team is how willing everyone is to cross disciplines. “Taking our living art and crossing it with visual and performing art is what we’re really excited about here,” she says, “and it’s resonated with our program of changing exhibitions.” One example of this is the justconcluded show Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith: Flowers, Poetry, and Light, which put Mapplethorpe’s iconic photography in dialogue with Smith’s legendary lyrics and poetry. Coupled with original horticultural installations created by the Selby Gardens staff, the indoor/outdoor show was the first time these creative soulmates had their work showcased in a botanical garden setting. Smith performed twice on-site during the show’s run, which she enjoyed so much that she agreed to return for performances in fall 2023 and spring 2024 as an Artist in Residence. “Since we kicked off the year with Robert Mapplethorpe,” Rominiecki explains, “we decided to focus all of the exhibitions for the year on photography, which is an important tool not only for creating art but also for documenting the plant world.” Indeed, the next exhibition, Flora Imaginaria: The Flower in Contemporary Photography, celebrates the decorative potential and symbolic elements of flowers via 70+ works produced by more than 50 contemporary artists from around the world. Photo by Nancy Guth. 36

Perhaps the most dynamic exhibition, however, takes place at Selby Gardens newly acquired Historic Spanish Point campus, which Rominiecki calls “30 spectacular acres of Old Florida that does a wonderful job of highlighting Florida plants.” The show, which launched in September 2021 and has been extended through August 2023, is called Seeing the Invisible: An Augmented Reality Contemporary Art Exhibition, and it features work by such international luminaries as Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui, and Refik Anadol. Using a custom app downloaded to a smartphone or tablet, visitors can interact with more than a dozen augmented reality (AR) works in carefully curated locations throughout the campus’ 30-acre preserve. Rominiecki explains that by using your phone or tablet as a digital lens, “you’re able to see thirteen international contemporary artworks set into the beautiful landscape of Historic Spanish Point. And when you’re seeing these artworks, they’re on view at 12 other botanical gardens around the world at the same time. It’s what I like to call ‘botanical diplomacy.’” What’s so thrilling is that the exact same art is concurrently viewable in a dozen outdoor garden settings located in different biomes throughout the world, which allows the art to engage with existing features of the natural landscape beyond the limitations of what is possible with physical art. Rominiecki notes that much of the art in Seeing the Invisible addresses timely themes such as nature, environment, and sustainability.

“The reason that Seeing the Invisible works so well in a botanical garden setting is that it’s outdoors,” says Rominiecki, “so it doesn’t disrupt nature as far as large-scale sculptures typically would. It’s a completely outdoor experience where you’re interacting with nature—it’s very unexpected and dynamic. And we’re seeing that it really appeals to all age groups.” Selby Gardens is interested in more than just creating impressive, audience-pleasing exhibitions and conducting world-class

They also want to provide the best visitor experience they can and connect more people to the science behind the plants they feature, and that’s why construction is happening on the main downtown campus. “It’s Phase One of the master plan to preserve our history, protect our world-renowned research collections, and sustain our future,” says Rominiecki. “The first phase, which will be complete in August 2023, includes a new welcome center and a new plant research center that will house all of our research activities and collections, including a new herbarium, a new laboratory, and a new library. Phase One also includes what we’re calling the Living Energy Access Facility, or LEAF. It will house our parking, a one-story garden-to-plate restaurant, and a new gift shop.” It’ll also boast a nearly 50,000-squarefoot solar array on the roof that will make Selby Gardens the first net-positive botanical garden complex in the world, which means it will generate more energy than it consumes. Other exciting aspects of Phase One include new garden features, increased garden space, a multi-use recreational trail around the campus perimeter, and even off-site traffic improvements on the surrounding roadways. Selby Gardens is also preserving the wonderful Augusta

block of historic Palm Avenue—one of the first streets in Sarasota to be laid with brick—and turning that into a pedestrian-only promenade. In short, it’s going to be even more of a world-class destination than it already is now. As for what parts of Selby Gardens Rominiecki personally loves most, she’s hard-pressed to choose, but admits to having two favorite “wow” spaces. “At the Downtown Sarasota campus, I love standing in front of the Moreton Bay fig tree, which is one of the supersize banyans we have that was planted when Marie Selby actually lived on the property. It’s just magical. It’s so iconic,” she says. “At the Historic Spanish Point campus, I love to stand at the Sunken Garden and look outward to the bay because the location is so elevated. You have this sweeping vista of Little Sarasota Bay. It’s just wonderful.” Whether you come for the exhibitions or the everyday beauty at one or both campuses, Selby Gardens is the perfect place to escape into a beautiful, wondrous refuge—the living art that is the natural world. “Nature is alive,” Rominiecki says, “and public gardens give us a chance to renew and reconnect with what makes us human.”

What is filler? Dermal fillers are minimally invasive injectable cosmetic treatments that help rejuvenate your appearance and enhance your natural facial features. Made of a gel-like substance, hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to treat lines and wrinkles, replace volume loss and contour the face. The results last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used and the area being treated. With many different types of hyaluronic acid filler available on the market, 90% of the results from filler has to do with the technique and only 10% has to do with the product itself.

What is Glow Dermspa’s specialty? At Glow, the goal we have for our clients is “we want everyone to notice, but no one to know.” Our specialty is natural-looking results. We want you to look like the best version of yourself. It is so satisfying as providers to help someone feel beautiful and confident. To some, it’s life changing. Staying up-to-date with all the latest treatments and techniques ensures we are providing our clients with the highest level of quality aesthetic in their filler treatments. We find a lot of clients come to us apprehensive about getting filler, based on a past experience they weren’t satisfied with or seeing others around them with undesirable outcomes. We love to show clients something different. Our approach builds the trust and confidence in our skills and expertise, which translates into delivering the best aesthetic outcomes. They are excited to come back!

Describe the Glow Experience. At Glow, we are patient focused. From the moment you walk in the door, you will be greeted with a warm smile and a luxury feel. Why do I look so old? Defining the aging face seems deceptively simple yet it’s true manifestations elude the best of us because we hang on to oversimplified, one dimensional catch phrases of wrinkles and volume loss. The grand design of our face starts with a deep bony skeleton and interwoven mesh of various types of soft tissue (fat, muscle, fascia and skin) all of which are tethered to the bone by cutaneous ligaments. Youth is defined by the shape and volume distribution of the face, the ideal being more fullness in the upper cheeks, hollows in the lower cheeks and a crisp jawline. With aging, the soft tissue falls, especially fat, reversing this facial proportion. As the volume falls, it creates the perceived volume loss of the upper face, and the bunching of this tissue around the mouth creates laugh lines and accordions the lips filling them with wrinkles.

Deep Plane Lifts vs the Rest? Ascribing to the one-dimensional analysis, we pull with mini-lifts and plump with fillers and fat. Why not just move the fallen volume? Hmmm. Science pur por t s tremendous innovative progress with shiny expensive energy machines and eloquently named products that just hollow out the areas that need fullness and overly plump others. Look around you – do you like what you see? We are slaves to a system of simple solutions for a quick buck, where we are selling the idea of beauty with smoke and mirrors rather than creating it. To create beauty, we evoke the grand design with the deep plane facelift.

We release the deep tethers that foil the other facelift techniques and lift the deep tissue that had fallen to its youthful origin. This recreates the original proportions of facial volume. While the concept is simple the technique is intimidatingly complex. Mini lifts do little more than pull, and the SMAS facelifts struggle with shifting volume, of ten augmented with fat injections to camouflage the limitations. Non-surgical fillers and threads are great for subtle improvement, but create disastrous results when pushed to the max, an all-too-common theme in celebrity plastic surgery gone wrong. To realize our dreams is to face reality, embrace vanity and ignore hype. Choose wisely and enjoy life!

At what childhood age is interceptive orthodontics recommended? We recommend an evaluation for interceptive orthodontics by age 7. During this stage of a child’s growth, the airway, tongue posture and jaw development can be evaluated and corrected. Does the child have a tongue tie, retruded chin, open mouth breathing, crooked teeth, or narrow arches? Does the child wet the bed or have trouble concentrating in school with ADD or ADHD? These can be a few of the signs that early orthodontic treatment is needed. The child’s dental arches can be stimulated through appliance therapy to create a better airway and facial attractiveness. We specifically design each treatment plan with the goal of managing the care at the appropriate time for an ideal outcome. These issues if left untreated can cause difficulties later in life such as temporomandibular disorder (TMD), facial asymmetries, airway issues, jaw pain, spaces, and crooked teeth. The earlier the care is given, the easier it is to achieve the desired and healthy outcome.

Cameron Johnson DMD Dr. Cameron Johnson is the son of Dr. Jill Morris, founder of World Class Dentistry in beautiful Sarasota, FL. Dr. Johnson graduated from LECOM School of Dentistry and now focuses his skills in providing world class orthodontics to this area. He focuses his training in early or thodontic interception for adolescents. His memberships include North American Association of Facial Or thotropic s, American Or thodontic Society, International Association of Orthodontics, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.

How can it be helped? Early interception is my goal to any form of childhood orthodontics. I create beautiful, broad smiles with an orthopedic focus allowing accommodation for the permanent teeth, the tongue, and healthy joint position. Myofunctional treatment is important to instill proper function of the tongue and facial muscles, leading to correct breathing, swallowing and function. Specific appliances are employed to aid and benefit the patterns of natural bone growth and remodeling that is occurring in the developing child. I apply a unique system of self-ligating braces that allows the patient’s own physiology to help treat their dental issues while achieving the desired cosmetic and functional outcome for the child and parents. 4 2 42

What is Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP)? Scalp micro pigmentation (SMP) is a specialized cosmetic technique that deposits natural pigment into the upper layers of the skin to replicate natural hair follicles. SMP can add the appearance of density to naturally thinning areas of the scalp as well as help camouflage post-procedural scarring or other focal areas of alopecia. Overall SMP creates an undetectable illusion of thicker, fuller hair as the color-matched natural pigment blends with existing hairs. Typically, a client needs 2 - 3 treatment sessions spaced 14 days apart.

What is Scar Camouflage? Scar and Stretch Mark Camouflage blends hypopigmented or pale scars and stretch marks into the surrounding skin, dramatically improving their appearance. Sc ar s and s tretch marks become less perceptible and noticeable with color and depth res tored to the tis sue. A color palette of natural pigment is used to precisely approximate skin tone to the surrounding area. In cases where even skin tone already exists, inkless stretch mark camouflage is a great option to restore depth and texture. Typically, a client needs 2 to 3 treatment sessions spaced 30 – 45 days apart. Results for Scalp Micro Pigmentation and Scar Camouflage are of ten permanent with occasional touchups performed 2–5 years after the initial sessions. JULY 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE

What Is Digital Smile Design? The smile design process all starts with a photograph, taken in the Smile Studio equipped with a photo booth to capture each individual’s natural facial features. That first photo begins a start-to-finish digital process in which the photos serve as “blueprints.” After a close study of facial structure, Dr. Scala, Dr. Rubinski, and their team of engineers design the smile to blend with each individual’s unique facial features, guiding patients from a 2D design to a customized 3D digital smile. The team follows a digital process that involves photos, scanning, and smile simulation to not only correct both form and function, but will bring out the very best in your facial features. In some cases, facial aesthetics are used to create a non-surgical, natural “Smile Lift,” which emulates a more youthful appearance. This process sets Dr. Scala and her team apart from other dental offices. In addition to a customized state-of-the-art Smile Studio, the practice is continually updating the technology and keeping current with the best materials and lab services.

How can Digital Smile Design change my smile? The digital design process can help with every type of smile and consists of several services used to enhance one’s look. Your streamlined treatment plan can consist of one or more of the menu of services which includes but is not limited to: custom crowns, veneers, invisalign, implants, bite correction, whitening and botox. Each customized treatment plan is followed with a series of photos from start to finish to maximize the best possible outcome for “Smile Rejuvenation,” helping you feel and look your very best. The team’s complementary skills, superior techniques, passion for beauty, and state-ofthe-art equipment make them the ultimate dental choice in cosmetic dentistry for the Lakewood Ranch and surrounding areas. Dr. Scala, Dr. Rubinski, and their team are eager to welcome patients to the “New Age of Dentistry.”

My breast implants are getting close to ten years old, what should I do? The long accepted “rule” of changing breast implants is really more of a suggestion (quite honestly, a selfserving one for plastic surgeons).

Alissa Shulman M.D., F.A.C.S D r. S h u l m a n w a s n a m e d Physician of the Year for 2016 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. She was previously the Chief of Staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the President of the Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons. Sovereign Plastic Surgery Medical Arts Building 1950 Arlington St., Suite 112 Sarasota, Florida 34239 941.366.5476 sovereignps.com

The concern over having the most up-todate implant design is reasonable, but the last time the silicone material was updated, was around 2006 and saline implant design hasn’t changed since 1999. What is more important is how your breasts/implants look and feel. For the most part, if your breasts look and feel as good as you would like, leave them alone. We all age, and breasts age and change, too. They can become larger, smaller, and more droopy (ptotic). Your implants, however, don’t change (other than the implant shell breaking or leaking). Even hard breasts are soft silicone covered in hard scar tissue (the saline in implants is simply absorbed into the surrounding tissue). If your breasts have changed after augmentation, it is a good time for an evaluation with your plastic surgeon. If you are not ready for removal, then replacement is an option. Usually, slightly larger implants are needed just to maintain your shape. If you are done with your implants, then it is just a matter of how you would like your breasts to look and what true breast volume and skin you have. Simple removal may be acceptable if you are okay with your amount of tissue and shape. If you are not pleased with the droop, then a breast lift (mastopexy) may achieve your desired shape. If the size is a little smaller than you wish,

AND you have some spare fat, then fat grafting is a nice option (liposuction, filtration, and injection of the fat into the breasts). This can be combined with simple removal or a mastopexy. For the most part, breasts look better than the patient expects after implant removal. And, by the time someone has decided to have their implants removed, the breast size is fairly consistent with their body’s physical and imagined proportions.

hen it comes to dental care, not all dental professionals are equal. Today, we’re going to discover how and why that’s the case by speaking with Dr. Jill Morris of World Class Dentistry (3951 Swift Road, Sarasota), a lifelong Floridian who’s been in private dental practice for 30+ years in our area. What does the term “smile beauty” mean to you? Definitely healthy gums and teeth. But when it comes to defining beauty, the standards change all the time. I’ve been in practice for 37 years now, yet throughout that time, people want whiter and whiter teeth. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, when it comes to smile beauty, people like broad smiles.

In all your experience as a dentist, what has most surprised you? How long results can last. In the 1990s, I started teaching cosmetic dentistry and was lecturing for some of the biggest companies in the world. I also became accredited with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. During that time, patients would always ask, “How long do restorations last?” We didn’t really know because it was brand-new technology and brand-new cements. We were hoping 10 years, though nobody really knew. As it turns out, I have smiles that I’ve done that have been in people’s mouths 25 years now and they still look good. What type of people are seeking to improve their smiles? It used to just be the older crowd who’d ground down their teeth or simply wanted to improve their smiles which can really reverse time for somebody. When someone has their smile done, their whole face lights up—it rejuvenates them. It sets the spirit free because they can smile without being embarrassed or feeling like they have to hide anything. It really changes the personality of the person. Photo by Matt Holler 66

“ It’s a mor e e xqu isite, fin e-

tu n in g typ e of de n tistr y . . ”. Because of movies and TV shows, we’re seeing younger and younger people who now want perfect smiles. Thank God that for the younger crowd, we can usually accommodate them with little tooth preparation—we keep the grinding to a minimum. That way, if they later decide to change their mind, they can have the veneers removed without much damage to their teeth. Your website says that one of your popular services is a “Smile Makeover.” A Smile Makeover is giving someone ten top veneers and eight on the bottom—that’s about average. I also do major reconstruction. For seven years, I taught fullmouth rehabilitation which could correct the bite and get rid of TMJ pain. Plus, patients ended up with an incredible-looking smile. But if we’re solely focusing on the smile, it’s just veneers that go on the front and the edges of the teeth. We’re not changing the bite or anything else with a smile makeover. What are some of the current trends in dentistry? One new thing is that we’re addressing the airway because so many people have sleep apnea. That’s often caused by collapsed airways. So, a lot of times when I do my smile makeovers, or I make a full-mouth reconstruction, I can position the jaw where I open the airway. Instead of someone being on a CPAP for the rest of their life, I can correct their bite with beautiful porcelain, and then put them in an oral bite guard [at night] that keeps the airway from collapsing. Wow! I also have eight lasers in my office, each of which do different things. One actually creates tighter collagen for the airways, which is a very easy procedure that’s painless. With it, I can go inside the mouth and even build collagen in the face for women who want that. I can rejuvenate the collagen in the lips and the face, but unlike how plastic surgeons do it, I do it from inside the mouth instead

of outside. It penetrates pretty deeply, so we get nice collagen regeneration. What’s the most difficult aspect of your work? I’m a perfectionist, so I spend a lot of time troubleshooting everything and rechecking details. Working with smiles isn’t easy dentistry like giving someone a filling. This type of work is psychological. It changes their lives. It’s a more exquisite, fine-tuning type of dentistry that’s important since a smile is one of the first things you see on a person. You’re a Floridian? I grew up about an hour from here. And my grandparents retired here. I did a one-year residency in Virginia, but then I came back and bought my practice from a retiring dentist. I believe I was the first female to own a dental practice in Bradenton. Around the mid-2000s, I moved my practice to the Quay [by the Ritz-Carlton] so it’d be easier for Sarasota residents to reach me but still be close enough for my existing Bradenton clients, too. That area got torn down right before the real estate bubble hit, so that’s when I moved into my present building, though my practice is the same practice I’ve always had. Many of my patients have been with me since I started in 1987. It’s a family business, right? My husband specializes in implants—he joined my practice in 2004. My son is the other dentist here, and he does orthodontics as well as general dentistry. My other son is our laboratory technician so he runs our lab, and my daughter is in dental school, so yes, you could certainly say it’s a family affair. Anything else you’d like to share? I try to live by the words of my father, a frugal, Depressionera person who said, “Always do your best and be fair to people.” I also feel a connection to the Divine with my work. I see what I do as my way of being a servant of humanity and helping improve lives.

STU BOY D

Becca Jennings and Stu Boyd both came to Sarasota from elsewhere in the States. Becca is from Philadelphia, PA where she earned her BFA from Moore College of Art & Design. Now, you may recognize her as the Director of Marketing for Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota. Stu, from Buffalo, Michigan, is currently the Supplier Quality Engineer for Sun Hydraulics Corp. Both energetic and enthusiastic professionals, the couple met at a networking event hosted by the Young Professionals Group here in Sarasota. Stu, with his playful sense of humor, jokes that he heard “YPG” stood for “Young Pretty Girls,” and so he thought he’d check it out. The two hit it off, and the rest was history. In September of 2019, the pair traveled to Philadelphia, PA. Becca was eager to show Stu around her old stomping grounds. Thanks to a video game from Stu’s childhood, Tony Hawk, Stu knew one thing about The City of Brotherly Love: it was home to Love Park and the famous Love Park Statue. He decided that’s where he would get down on one knee and pop the question, using Becca’s grandmother’s ring, given to him by Becca’s parents. In April 2022, the couple wed at the Powel Crosley Estate. Becca wore the same necklace that her mother wore for her own wedding. The couple’s two corgis, Winston and Watson, served as ring bearers on the big day. Becca JULY 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE

created little pillows that the dogs wore on their backs as they walked down the aisle with the rings tied to them. Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed delicious hors devours, plated meals, and late-night bites by Milan Catering. To make their wedding cake truly one of a kind, the bride crafted two custom sculptures of their pups that were arranged to look like they were digging into the wedding cake frosting ahead of the guests. Becca plans to transform those sculptures into Christmas ornaments, so that every year when the Boyd family decorates their tree, they will be reminded of their magical day in April when they said, “I do.” The couple dreamed of honeymooning in Europe, but due to the pandemic, those plans were put on hold. Instead, they decided on a “mini-moon” a little closer to home in one of the most European cities in the Nation: New Orleans. There, they enjoyed wonderful eats, abundant music, took a class at the New Orleans School of Cooking, and travelled down the mighty Mississippi on a jazz dinner cruise aboard the Steamboat Natchez. Cassie McElroy and Justin Sharp attended the same high school, and even shared friend groups. Yet it wasn’t until later that they officially met, introduced by a mutual friend. Cassie says with a laugh, “Then he wouldn’t leave me alone!” Eventually, the couple began going out and what started as a close friendship bloomed into a loving relationship. In November 2020, Justin took Cassie to the St. Pete Pier for her birthday and surprised her with a proposal, followed by brunch with both of their families. In January 2022, surrounded by nature, friends, and family, the couple tied the knot at the Barn at Lone Oak Acres in Parrish. techniques. The result was breathtaking, with hanging lights twinkling throughout the venue and along the trees, with floating candles leading the wedding party down the aisle. Once the couple finalized their vows, the reception began. “Music was really important to us,” notes Cassie. “Chris Craze was the DJ, and we had a genre/song picked out for every stage of the event. Getting all our guests to dance was our goal, and we did pretty well!” After a long night of dancing, eating, drinking, and more dancing, the newlyweds enjoyed a honeymoon cruise to the Virgin Islands. For the next couple weeks, they enjoyed the sun and sea, and even had their own butler service. The Sharps came home to their two pups, Kona and Winston, to revel in a lifetime of love and laughs. The next step of their adventure begins December 2022, when the couple will welcome their first baby.

theSTRAY By Grier Ferguson

He was older than he should have been. Maybe it was the beard. Or the summer he had spent in Haiti. Or the fact that as a philosophy major in college he had spent four years studying the thoughts of men who had been dead for centuries. But it was what it was. Neal was an old 23. And that, he thought, was part of the reason why he was here this morning. Part of the reason why he was not sleeping in after a night out with friends like other guys his age. Being an old 23 was part of the reason why instead he was out on the streets of Detroit on a Saturday morning in late August, counting the number of stray dogs he spotted as they limped by or scurried from one overgrown lawn to another. Neal had moved to the city three months ago, and already he was in love. He loved the abandoned factories—relics of an age when cars were king and The Motor City was a capital of industry. He loved the old clapboard houses he could tell used to be the pride of the neighborhood, now abandoned and marked by rotting wood and peeling paint. He even loved the medians, with grass grown high because the city had run out of money to pay a maintenance crew to mow them. Sad sights, but Neal loved them all because he was sad, too. After college graduation, he drifted from small job to small job, not knowing what he wanted to do with his degree in philosophy, and employers not knowing what to do with someone who had majored in something that everyone, including his parents, had warned him was impractical.

It was all too cliché, really. The philosophy grad who couldn’t find a real job, a real career, a real path, a real future. But knowing it was a tried-and-true cliché didn’t help Neal feel any better. It just made things worse. He thought about moving to New York or Boston and trying to get a job with a think tank or a non-profit. Something that would at least vaguely use his philosophy degree. But those glistening cities with their glistening people and lit-up nights and shiny black sedans seemed too much to bear. Detroit matched his mood. So, he moved into a small apartment overlooking a rundown public park and got a job as a waiter at a restaurant downtown. He liked talking to the customers, liked taking their orders and bringing them food on a big circular tray he had learned to carry above his head. He loved their faces when he placed a steaming plate of bacon and eggs or spaghetti and meatballs in front of them, loved how they smiled, loved how much they seemed to enjoy eating something so simple. In his free time, Neal had started volunteering with the Detroit branch of the Michigan Humane Society. He had seen an advertisement in the newspaper calling for people to help them count stray dogs on the street, and he had answered the call. He threw himself into his work at the restaurant and the humane society, hoping a life plan would rise to the surface as he tallied dogs, as he sweated through his flannel shirt, as the sun beat down on him, as he brought breakfast to the people at table six, as he went to bed at night dreaming about philosophy. “There’s one!” shouted a middle-aged woman in a floral caftan that was much too nice to be worn on the occasion of counting strays.

JULY 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE

77

Neal looked up, spotted the dog, and then marked it down on the piece of paper on his clipboard. There was such a strange sense of success each time they spotted a stray. A sense of accomplishment, like a skilled birder seeing for the first time a bird he had been searching for his entire life, lowering the binoculars from his eyes, and nodding to himself in silent admiration of his most breathtaking discovery yet. Yes, there were the minutes that dragged on when they didn’t see any dogs and there was nothing to tally, moments of searching, of scanning the skyline for anything that was moving. But those minutes were worth it if they were able to mark down just one dog. The more experienced Neal became in counting strays, the more he knew what to look for. Sometimes it was just a flash, a moment of movement near the edge of his line of sight. The first day, he had ignored those flashes, let other people call them out and mark down the dogs, but now when he saw one, he whipped his head around and tried to catch the dog in his sight before it ran with all its starving might behind another house. He had learned to trust his peripheral vision. “There!” the caftaned woman yelled. Neal turned to where she was pointing, but too late. He did not see a dog, but he knew the woman was never wrong. She was the best volunteer stray dog spotter the Detroit branch of the Michigan Humane Society had, so when she said “there!” you knew a dog was lurking somewhere in the distance where her cherry red fingernail was pointing. But to mark down a dog on the tally sheet, Neal had to see the dog himself. Each dog spotter worked in a pair—one caller and one marker. For a dog to be counted, it had to be seen by both spotters to prevent mislabeling of feral cats and raccoons as stray dogs. 78

SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2022

So, Neal started walking in the direction she indicated. He looked back. The woman held her hand over her eyes, shielding them from the sun and watching as Neal moved closer to where she had seen the dog. The house in front of him looked abandoned. They were not allowed to trespass; they were supposed to stay on public property. But Neal could tell no one had lived there for years. A front window had been smashed open and glass was scattered on the porch beneath it. A trash can was knocked sideways next to the front door. Neal stepped off the sidewalk and into the yard. “It’s okay,” the caftaned woman yelled to Neal. “Come back!” But Neal was already in the side yard, hugging the edge of the house so the dog would not see him approaching. Neal wondered why stray dogs were so scared, why they ran every time they saw a person near them. Like they were being hunted. The strays were not like the dogs Neal had grown up around. When he was little, the dogs that belonged to his neighbors would run up to him as soon as they saw him and rub against his legs, begging for a scratch behind the ears or for Neal to throw a tennis ball down the street for them to retrieve. The strays were different. As Neal rounded the corner, he saw the dog. In Neal’s three months of dog spotting, this was the mangiest dog he had ever seen. Brown with patches of black and even bigger patches of no fur at all. Skinnier than any dog Neal had ever seen, with each of the dog’s ribs visible down its side. The dog had not noticed Neal yet. Its head rested on the ground, on a patch of dirt as bare as the bald patch on top of the dog’s head.

• b e ac h r e a d s •

And Neal knew in this moment why the dogs ran. He knew they were running from a life they did not want to live, as if being tallied on a piece of paper would mean they were locked into this life forever. They ran in the hopes that someday they would be able to stop running. They ran in the hopes that someday they would nestle into the arms of a little boy who would pat them on the back and scratch them behind the ears and lead them inside a white clapboard house to a bowl of food and a soft blanket arranged on the floor of the living room as a bed. They ran in the hopes that someday they would not be strays. Neal inched closer to the dog, forgetting for the moment the very real threat of a dog bite and rabies. He had the urge to reach out to the dog and stroke it on top of its head, right where the bald spot was, and tell the dog everything was going to be okay. Neal was three feet from the dog now, and just as he inched one step closer, the dog lifted its head from the dirt and looked straight into Neal’s eyes. Neal stood still. For half a minute, the two looked at each other in silence. With all of the sad things Neal had seen in the last three months, the look on this dog’s face was the saddest. And as the dog blinked its heavy eyelids and opened them again, Neal knew at this moment this dog understood him better than anyone else. “It’s okay,” Neal whispered. “It will be okay.” It took great effort for the dog to lift its scrawny limbs from the ground and stand up. Once it had, it met Neal’s eyes again and then the dog’s eyes closed—one more slowly than the other—so it looked like the dog was winking. Then the dog limped away into the brush behind the house and was out of sight.

Dr. April Glasco

educationmatters SECOND CHANCE LAST OPPORTUNITY’S NEW WOMEN’S CENTER By Ryan G. Van Cleave

One of the biggest challenges in helping the poor and disenfranchised is first gaining their trust. Yet that’s something Dr. April Glasco has earned because she’s been there for them for more than 25 years, having established Second Chance Last Opportunity decades ago to provide crisis prevention, intervention, referral, and life skills training for at-risk teens and their low income and/or homeless families. But her success stems from more than just that—people have come to trust Dr. Glasco because she’s walked a path similar to theirs, having been a single mother of four daughters who once lived in a car to escape an abusive husband. In her work as a corrections officer with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and a case worker for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Dr. Glasco witnessed how our community— how every community—is challenged by issues of violence, drugs, addiction, and generational cycles of government dependence. She decided to do something about it. In 1995, Second Chance Last Opportunity, a communitybased 501(c)(3) organization, began helping the community’s isolated, underserved population from a purple house on 1933 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. That has since become the hub for emergency food and clothing distribution. The organization’s second site opened years later at 14. S. Lime Avenue, and it serves as an education, counseling, and training center as well as Dr. Glasco’s office. Since demand has increased beyond capacity for those two sites, Dr. Glasco opened a third site in May 2022—the new Women’s Center at 1032 – 1034 Colleton Drive. “Six months ago,” she says, “someone asked us if we were interested in the building, and I said Sure! It was a hair salon. It needed fixing up and new walls, but many people helped and supported the necessary renovations.” Today, this impressive new facility is ready to empower women in 80

our community. About ten women participate in each week’s Tuesday Zoom classes, while a dozen or more meet face-to-face on Thursdays at the new site to take empowerment classes to help give women a much-needed second chance at life. Dr. Glasco admits, “In my 33 years of doing this, I never thought I’d be able to reach the goal I set for myself in the beginning when I started Second Chance—having the services that were desperately needed to help these individuals become effective and change their lives one at a time. But that’s where we are now.” The Women’s Center offers a boutique for women that has goods such as clothes and baby supplies that are free. Those who shop there can take what they need and in return donate a few dollars. Most, however, pay for the goods they need through donating volunteer hours there or at the other Second Chance facilities. Dr. Glasco welcomes the help because volunteers are the engine that make her organization go. “When we give out emergency food or clothing, the majority of clients we assist come and help. They want to volunteer. They want to make a difference, and they feel good about doing it.” It’s also a way for them to learn skills that can help later in a job, such as how to deal with people without getting overly emotional. One of Second Chance’s many success stories is how it helped a recently widowed woman of color who was depressed, and

then came the pandemic. She didn’t leave her house for three years. But she agreed to join one of Second Chance’s Zoom classes. When it was time for the class’ graduation, the woman had to decide—could she let go of fear and sadness, and release what she was going through? She did. And now she shares her struggles with other women to help them through their own challenges. One of the surprising things is that Second Chance isn’t just serving Newtown or the population of Sarasota. People are coming up from Parrish, Englewood, and North Port because they know there’s hope here. It’s not about free food or emergency Pampers. It’s that Dr. Glasco cares. People have come to realize what an organization like Second Chance can do for a community as a whole. “You have to adapt to change and not give up, not feel that you will never make it,” Dr. Glasco explains. “Second Chance is there to let them know that there IS a way out. We teach them how to become what they need to become.” For her, every moment is a teachable moment where she can mentor people to be successful in the next phase of their lives. Giving them the skills and opportunities is key to giving them back the responsibility for turning their own lives around. When asked how Second Chance can make a difference when other organizations that have similar goals of helping them still have people falling through the cracks, Dr. Glasco had a simple answer: “Because we’re right there where they’re falling.” For 33 years, Dr. Glasco has been right there where they’re falling. And she and her team of volunteers aren’t going anywhere.

KATRINA COOMBS

Katrina Coombs was born in St Andrew, Jamaica, and she lives and works there today. In 2013, through the University of Plymouth, she earned an MFA in Creative Practice from Transart Institute. Coombs has a passion for fiber and an understanding of the sensitivity of threads and fabric, which she uses to bring unique designs and sculptural forms into being. Her practice employs the use of fiber and the body as she engages the role and existence of women, the M(0)ther and I. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, locally and internationally. Of special note is her first USA solo exhibition: “I M(O)ther: Threads of the Maternal Figure” currently on view at the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College. Through her art initiative, Blaqmango, Coombs engages the Jamaican and international art scene not only as an artist, but also as a mentor and independent curator. She organizes local exhibitions and residencies as stepping stones and for artist development. She believes that all artists should be true to their creative vision as they pursue their artistic projects and encourages and guides artists on the best ways to follow their dreams while providing them with opportunities to advance their careers. “I M(O)ther: Threads of the Maternal Figure” is on view at the Sarasota Art Museum through October 2, 2022. 88

LITERARYScene By Ryan G. Van Cleave THREE NEW MYSTERIES FOR JUNE

BAYOU BOOK THIEF • by Ellen Byron (Berkeley, June 2022) Cozy mysteries aren’t typically my thing, but my cozyloving reader friends have been talking about Ellen Byron for years. Given that, when I heard she was launching a new series, I gave Bayou Book Thief a shot. From the start, the richly rendered environment of New Orleans holds a lot of flavorful appeal. It’s easy to see why Byron has earned so many fans—her ability to create ambiance is impressive. In this story, late 20s widow Ricki James leaves LA because her actor husband died in a dumb internet stunt. She’s from New Orleans, so home she goes as anyone might do in the face of such a tragedy. Ricki’s got a love for collecting vintage cookbooks. This translates into her joining the fun-but-weird staff of Bon Vee Culinary House Museum, where she launches a new gift shop that sells vintage cookbooks and cookware. Things go wrong when she discovers a box of donated cookbooks that also contains the body of a Bon Vee tour guide who’d been killed with a vintage cookware item—a can opener. Worse, Ricki is sure she’ll be the prime suspect, so she takes it upon herself to find the real killer. While Ricki’s not a professional sleuth, she’s got great skills for sleuthing out hard-to-find things thanks to years

of chasing down vintage cookbooks. She’s also a friendly, likable character who has good on-page chemistry with Detective Rodriguez. The mystery itself is interesting throughout with just enough twists and red herrings to keep readers moving ahead without feeling cheated when all is revealed. The ending cliffhanger promises more mystery goodness to come with book two. If you’re looking for a new series that doesn’t include a lot of sex or foul language but has interesting Southern characters without the exaggerated dialect or cliches, this might be the one for you. Plus, there are several recipes in the back of the book from actual vintage cookbooks— the author’s introduction explains how she came across these rare titles.

THE TUESDAY NIGHT SURVIVORS’ CLUB • by Lynn Cahoon (Lyrical Underground, June 2022) Since I had such good luck with Ellen Byron’s new series, I gave another new cozy series a shot with New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lynn Cahoon’s The Tuesday Night Survivors’ Club. Breast cancer survivor Rarity Cole has recently moved from St. Louis to Sedona, Arizona where she has devoted her life to helping others find their way to health and healing. To this end, she launched Next Chapter Bookstore which brings together Eastern and Western medicine, but she also started a book group that serves as a support

community—yep, that’s where the book title comes from. When one of their members goes MIA and her car is found abandoned on a trail, Rarity is sure something terrible has happened to poor Martha. Rarity helps by taking in Martha’s teensy Yorkie named “Killer,” and that hilariously cute dog becomes her constant companion in the story. When Martha is found to have been murdered, the book group pools their collective powers to sleuth out JULY 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE

FOREVER PAST • by Marty Ambrose (Severn House, June 2022) I’ve always been reluctant to jump into a series without having read the previous books, but that’s exactly what I did with Marty Ambrose’s Forever Past, which is book three in the historical mystery trilogy that’s centered on the Byron/ Shelley “Haunted Summer of 1816” group. The book follows Claire Clairmont—the stepsister of writer Mary Shelley—in Italy 1873 as she works to discover the fate of her daughter, Allegra, who was believed to have died of typhus years before in a Capuchin convent in Bagnacavallo, Italy. Even though she’s now in her 70s and still aching over her spurning by Lord Byron, Claire learns that Allegra might be alive. At this news, she heads to the convent to confront an abbess who might know far more than anyone suspects about betrayals both old and new. Claire’s enemies will stop at nothing to keep long-buried secrets from coming to light. And readers soon begin to wonder—is one or more of Claire’s companions working against her, too?

whodunnit and why. Along the way, a budding romance is in the air for Rarity and a hiking tour guide, as well as a Sedona detective (Drew Anderson) and Sam, Rarity’s high school best friend, who owns a crystal shop. Cahoon manages to keep cancer front and center throughout the book in a way that feels authentic and appropriate, yet without melodrama, even as we run across doctors with “miracle cures” and those who push their wares on people at their most vulnerable time. Even better, it’s not a cancer book—it’s a book that’s far more about community and friendship. This fast-paced story features a group of quirky characters that are the type of women most people would very much want to know if not be like. As a bonus, Cahoon’s book includes a recipe for chocolate cake with a chocolate glaze. I haven’t tried it yet, but I probably will—it looks good. This series starts strong and looks to be worth following.

I read the story in one sitting because the narrative tension was coupled with enough action to keep the pages turning as I romped through Italy alongside Claire as she refused to give up. And while I’m no Italian historian, the setting feels rich and well-researched—a quick Internet search gives me confidence that the author made good use of historical people, places, and situations beyond what Wikipedia offers. If this book sounds like your cup of romantic historical mystery tea, you’ll want to seek out the previous two books in the series, Claire’s Last Secret and A Shadowed Fate (the latter earned a starred review at Publisher’s Weekly). Even if this book is your only foray into the trilogy, it’s rewarding enough to merit a read, even if you’re not overly familiar with the Byron/ Shelley quartet (George Gordon, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Mary Shelley, who is Claire’s stepsister).
