hen it comes to beauty, it truly is in the eye of the beholder. Whether it’s a person, a place, or a thing, we can find beauty in so much in our glorious world.

In our July Summer Beauty issue, we feature our annual social season recap, and showcase the beautiful and giving people as well as many organizations that help make our community so great. Please look at each featured event and think about picking a cause close to your heart and join the fun, and most importantly, help make a difference.

If you are an avid eventgoer in town, you know how special, exciting, and detailed many of these events are. In our monthly Spotlight piece, we ask some independent event planners, event chairs, and organization administrators about their jobs in making these events so successful.

Summer beauty is also about the latest fashion and accessories, and we’ve got a product showcase from some fabulous local shops.

The month of July is also when we celebrate the birth of our nation. On July 4, there will be lots going on in town, with some of the best fireworks and patriotic events anywhere. Check our calendar listings and join the celebration!

In keeping with patriotism, be sure to read our Philanthropy article featuring an inspirational Veteran and a Southeastern Guide Dogs program to help Veterans with service dogs. Our monthly Education article showcases Sarasota Military Academy, a nonprofit military public charter school which benefits students through character and skills development and academics in a supportive learning environment.

In our new Around Town monthly feature, meet Community Foundation of Sarasota County leader Roxie Jerde, who shares insight on the Foundation as well as some personal tidbits about what she loves to do around town!

To me, there is nothing more beautiful than many of the sights and sounds of living in Sarasota. The restoration of Turtle Beach combined with the repairs on South Siesta Beach enhance our national best beach status. It’s where I paddleboard and I love it!

I also love the beauty of our Bayfront with its stunning marina, parks, and waterfront trails. It’s a terrific spot for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, and just enjoying a vibrant coastal atmosphere. Also on the Bayfront, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is an oasis of more of nature’s beauty. With its vast array of rare and exotic plants, visitors can explore the Gardens, stroll through the stunning Orchid House, and enjoy the various educational exhibits and programs they offer. Jennifer Rominiecki, President and CEO of the Gardens held a presentation which I attended on the completion of Phase I of the Gardens and gave a preview of upcoming revitalization and expansion phases. Environmental sustainability and scientific research, combined with the first in class botanical exhibitions are truly a legacy that will benefit Sarasota for generations to come.

The truth is there are just oodles of beautiful places to explore in Sarasota County. Myakka River State Park is a vast expanse of preserved natural beauty. The park features diverse ecosystems, including wetlands, prairies, and hammocks, and offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, boating, and camping.

At the invitation of local philanthropist and conservationist Elizabeth Moore, I went to Triangle Ranch to hang out with some out of state visitors who were from Louisiana and Mississippi. They were such charming people. The Myakka River was running high, the grass was vibrant green, and we could see an alligator peeking out of the water. It is wonderful to have old Florida right in our backyard.

Sarasota is abundant in wildlife and natural wonders. You can spot dolphins playing in the bay, manatees moving in the warm waters, and a variety of bird species in the nearby preserves. I love to explore all its raw beauty. Sarasota is also a gateway to the beautiful barrier islands, including Casey Key and Turtle Beach, which are havens for marine life and nesting sea turtles. Among my favorite treks include cycling the Legacy Trail and Venetian Waterway Park. I have seen snakes, alligators, possum, racoon, and hundreds of little dogs. I recently tried my hand (foot) at rollerblading on the trail. It’s a great place to roll, but I need a lot more practice!

From historic neighborhoods such as the Rosemary District and Towles Court oozing with charm, to newer neighborhoods such as Southside Village where I live, our town boasts distinctive architecture, quaint shops, and numerous art galleries. I am addicted to Morton’s Gourmet Market in my neighborhood and can’t get enough of the amazing array of food and wine they offer. And while I am thinking of Morton’s, Eddie Morton has been a long-time community supporter and friend of Sarasota Scene. What a great guy! He and his son Todd have proudly carried on the tradition of Eddie’s father Ted, who started in the grocery business in Sarasota in 1951 and purchased Marable’s Market in 1969 which became Morton’s Market in 1976.

Equally as beautiful as our surroundings, is our community spirit. Our residents have a strong sense of community. We are known for our friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and residents actively engage in many events, festivals, and community initiatives that foster a strong sense of togetherness. Now that’s a beautiful thing.

Enjoy summer and all the beauty it brings!

Guiding Light

• Southeastern Guide Dogs •

Dave Caras has always loved danger and high-risk situations. He found what he was looking for in the Caribbean, and in South and Central American jungles, working in search-andrescue and in anti-narcotic operations for the Coast Guard.

Caras was tasked with combing the landscape from the air in a Jayhawk helicopter or C-130 airplane, watching for disguised landing pads and runways, airplanes, and camouflaged openhull canoes used for drug smuggling. On land, he searched for smugglers and drug drops.

He was the “shotgun guy,” carrying a Remington12-gauge riot shotgun, and a Beretta 9 mm pistol. He always had a DEA agent onboard with him, along with foreign strike force agents and other Coasties. Typically, Caras and his anti-narcotics unit were deployed on these missions for two to four weeks and they would go back and do it all over again every six to eight weeks.

“I miss it. It was very exciting, cool stuff,” he said. “If you feared for your life at any time, it wasn’t the job for you. We were so well trained that there was no fear. It was just ‘this is what we do, it’s our job,’” Caras remembers.

After retiring from the Coast Guard, Caras needed something to match the level of intensity he had during his military career. He found that in athletics, and began training for triathlon competitions, often placing in the top for his age group.

Amid his training and competitions, Caras realized he wanted to do something to connect with and help other Veterans. Having lost a dog recently, he wanted to find a way to combine dogs and Veteran outreach. Caras searched on Google, and that’s when he ran across the website for Southeastern Guide Dogs. He immediately recognized a friend, Mike Jernigan, a blind Veteran, posing with his guide dog on their website.

It wasn’t long before Caras began volunteering for Southeastern Guide Dogs, becoming a “puppy raiser,” and training dogs into adulthood until they could be matched with their perfect Veteran owner. Though he raised four puppies and prepared them for their new homes, he was forced to give up this labor of love after getting a new job.

His new job involved working as a contractor consulting with U.S. and foreign military, in avionics and C-130 instruction. This meant Caras was traveling a lot more.

To keep himself busy and challenged, he weaved his triathlon training around his work schedule.

While in Utah, one afternoon Caras did some training for an Ironman Triathlon after doing some consulting work at Hill Air Force Base. He returned to his hotel to shower post-run and was looking forward to meeting a friend for dinner.

He was about 400-feet from his hotel and that’s the last thing he remembers before the accident.

A truck going 60 to 65 miles per hour in a 30-mph speed zone hit him from behind, slamming his body into the windshield. When the driver attempted to get back on the road, Caras rolled off the hood and underneath the vehicle. The driver then dragged him under the vehicle nearly 200 feet.

“The next thing I knew, I was in the hospital. I didn’t remember anything from the accident on,” Caras said. He recalls opening his eyes in the hospital and not knowing what happened or why he was there.

“My dad and brother were there, and my dad told me I was in the hospital and had been run over by a truck. He said I had severe injuries, and they had to amputate my left leg.’”

JULY 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE 29

Caras’ response was not what everyone expected. He reached down to feel both of his legs, grasping the reality of the situation.

“Oh good, they amputated the bad one,” he said.

Caras had issues with his Achilles tendon in that leg, and clearly still had his sense of humor, despite a major, lifealtering accident.

Initially, doctors had amputated only up to his knee, but because he was losing so much blood, they had to remove the knee as well.

Despite his humorous outlook, Caras knew he had a lot to contend with. According to Caras, above-the-knee amputations are much more challenging in comparison to below-the-knee amputations, because there’s much less mobility.

In addition to his amputation, Caras also had some other major adjustments to get accustomed to—four titanium ribs, two spinal column rods, the fusion of five lower spinal vertebrae, recovery from both his lungs collapsing, and a bolt in his head to relieve pressure. He’d also been diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI.

Caras says he’s thankful that at the time of the accident, there was a life flight helicopter training going on nearby, and he was flown to the University of Utah Hospital, a top medical center for trauma.

“If you’re ever going to get run over, do it in Salt Lake,” Caras said.

Despite the tough outlook ahead of him and warnings from his physical therapist that recovery from above-theknee amputations take a year and a half, Caras knew he couldn’t wait that long to get back into action.

“I told myself—now I have a new challenge. I want to be faster than other people who have both legs,” he said, and he threw himself into training after getting his prosthetic leg.

When he was raising puppies for Veterans in need with Southeastern Guide Dogs, he never imagined he would be in a situation to become a recipient of a Veteran’s Service Dog himself.

On November 19, 2015, Caras was matched with Bobb, who was 2 years old at the time. He describes the black lab as dependable and fearless, but not much of a snuggler. He says Bobb is protective and loyal, yet also has a stubborn streak, like his own.

On top of competing in triathlons and Nordic biathlons, and winning against athletes without prosthetics, Caras also competes in sailing competitions. He trains Veterans to sail and participates in the Green Beret Scuba Dive school for testing prosthetics in the military.

Caras qualified for the USA Precision Rifle Team and will be in the nationals next month and is on the USA Paralympic team. He climbs mountains, bikes, and keeps up his travel schedule. Bobb goes with him, helping Caras with balance in any situation that might make his prosthetic leg wobbly or unsteady—like stairs, trekking glaciers, or hiking.

“When I’m stepping over rough terrain, he’s like a walking cane. I can lose my balance, and he sees it and recognizes it without me even giving him a command. It saves a lot of time.”

“When I’m stepping over rough terrain, he’s like a walking cane,” Caras said. “I can lose my balance, and he sees it and recognizes it without me even giving him a command. It saves a lot of time.”

But Bobb also helps with invisible things others may not notice. Some symptoms of a TBI are impulse control challenges, irritability, and anxiety, which Caras sometimes struggles with.

“When I was living in Dallas, I was denied access to a restaurant,” he said. “I asked for the manager, and this big, tall guy kept getting closer and closer until he was right in my face. I was ready to fight the guy when Bobb pressed into me—hard—with all 80 pounds of his body weight, and it woke me up. It got my attention, and I got out of the situation.”

In his experience as a former Southeastern Guide dog trainer himself, Caras knows that these guide dogs can tell by their owner’s scent when serotonin levels change, and adrenaline increases. He says they pick up on that change, and that’s when they do something about it.

“They are trained to be still and quiet with their eyes fixed on you. If my adrenaline increases, he nudges me,” Caras says.

Though Caras says he’s not an alpha dog, Bobb will make his presence known when he needs to. Not long after Caras got him, Bobb caused two aggressive dogs near them to cower behind their owner after he let out a single bark that was so loud even Caras was surprised it came from his own dog. He’s also barked at coyotes, scaring them away.

“He keeps me from sitting on the couch, watching TV, and getting distracted,” Caras said. “Since the day he was born, he’s been on a regular schedule, and if I’m not ready to go at 6 a.m., I can hear him moving around downstairs and he’s standing there, just staring at me.”

But more than anything, Bobb keeps Caras steady and charging forward. He’s a training partner at the gym, and on runs, a family member, and best of all, a friend.

jerde

She’s the dynamic leader of Community Foundation of Sarasota County with a smile that lights up every room she enters. In her 12 years as President & CEO, she has made a significant impact on the foundation she leads, on many local nonprofits, and on our community. Meet Roxie Jerde— a good listener, a change-maker, a great visionary, and all-around great person!

You are leading a new standard for philanthropic giving in our region. To what do you attribute the success of the foundation?

For a community foundation to be successful, it must embrace a few key priorities. The first is listening—a foundation can’t create impact if it doesn’t know what the community it serves needs, and there’s no better way than listening. When I first interviewed for this position and met the transition team, I was deeply impressed at the work they had done with the community to understand how, as a foundation, we could best achieve impact. The transition team had sought feedback from the community for more than a year, between surveys and focus groups. They thoughtfully collected input from our community about the direction those living here envisioned for our community foundation. Listening is the bedrock of assessing needs and aspirations, and it is key for community foundation success.

The second is for an organization to have a strong set of shared values and vision. I was fortunate in that there was a consistency of leadership prior to my arrival. I am only the second CEO in the 44 years of the foundation’s existence. Stewart Stearns, the founding CEO, laid the foundation and, with a terrific board, the team developed strategic drivers and a framework for what they wanted to accomplish. The blueprint that had been established was one that I believed in.

True success for any organization relies on a terrific team of people who all bring unique talents and ideas to shared goals. I often say all of us are smarter than one of us, and this is evident in the impact this team can achieve. When you’ve got great direction, you’re grounded in your values, and when you work with great people, amazing things happen!

You have built upon a well-established tradition to empower donors to ignite change through causes they care about. How do you support the work of nonprofit partners?

Our support for nonprofit organizations all starts with our donors. We have more than 1,600 funds that generous people have started with us to fulfill their vision of doing good in our community. Since many of our funds come from donors who have passed away, we take their wishes very seriously. They have spent their lifetime building wealth and we are overseeing the legacy of their intentions. With that in mind, we support nonprofits with grants that align with donors’ intentions, whether that’s supporting educational opportunities, environmental protection, the arts, or welfare, to name a few sectors donors are passionate about.

Along with granting critical dollars to nonprofits, we also offer training opportunities. It’s important for nonprofits to build capacity to be able to fulfill their missions. Our nonprofit partners receive a monthly newsletter that is full of opportunities, upcoming trainings, and key information for strengthening nonprofit organizations.

Finally, we host an uplifting and empowering event—the Giving Challenge—roughly every other year. The next one is April 9-10, 2024. The Giving Challenge is a 24-hour

JULY 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE 33

giving event that nonprofits can participate in to receive a surge in funding. It’s truly a community event, rooted in the notion that everybody can be a philanthropist. We partner with The Patterson Foundation, which offers a 1:1 match on all dollars given, up to $100. The match really inspires giving. Through the challenge, donors give directly to their favorite nonprofits, so the match is very empowering to donors. Our last Giving Challenge in 2022 raised $16 million in unrestricted funds, which really gives nonprofits a boost. Since its inception, the Giving Challenge has raised $75 million.

How are you focused on how the foundation can evolve to better serve the community?

One strategic driver in our framework is what we call Excel. It’s how we can excel to be the best that we can be, so we set annual goals that allow us to aspire to new levels of donor engagement and donation stewardship. Excelling for us means recruiting talented people and building a great culture so that we can do the work we’ve been entrusted to do. Do we have the best technology? How are we getting more efficient? Do we have the financial stability that is needed to sustain this organization? We’re constantly evaluating and looking at all these indicators of success.

We also consistently monitor how we can evolve our initiatives to achieve as much impact as possible. One initiative we have that directly serves the community, personally serving those in need, is Season of Sharing, which we do in collaboration with the Herald-Tribune Media Group. For 23 years, Season of Sharing has been a vital community safety net to our most vulnerable

neighbors—people facing acute financial difficulties. Those in need can receive Season of Sharing funds with no red tape, so it’s efficient. These funds assist with rent or mortgage payments, childcare, utilities, and car repairs. Season of Sharing supports basic needs that allow people to stay in their homes. In its 23-year history, it has evolved to become more direct and efficient, so it can be a safety net in its truest sense, helping people rebound from crisis.

The Community Foundation is dedicated to work being grounded in data. How are you doing this? It’s all about perception and reality. We want to understand where there are disparities in our community, where the needs are, and what is preventing people from thriving here. We can know anecdotally some of this information, but to truly target help to where it’s most needed, we must rely on objective data. With this in mind, we are getting ready to launch a community indicator dashboard based on what are called the social determinates of health: education, economics, housing, and health. We have partnered with an outside company that has access to data from the U.S. Census, Centers for Disease Control, Florida Department of Education, and other reliable data collection agencies. The dashboard gives us insights that will help us address the disparities in our communities, and as importantly, it is a useful tool for donors seeking ways to amplify their philanthropic dollars as well as nonprofits that want to ensure their missions are aligned with current needs and community desires. Since the beginning, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County has been a trusted source of knowledge about our community, and this tool allows us to level up in that arena.

What are the key volunteer leadership roles you have held?

I’ve been fortunate to serve on many boards. Since coming to Sarasota in 2011, my board service includes the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, International Women’s Forum Suncoast, and Philanthropy Southeast (an association of 350 foundations across the Southeastern US). I currently serve as an Ex Officio Board member of the Community Foundation, of course, and I am on the Lee Wetherington Foundation Board.

In Kansas City, I was Chair of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation affiliate, Chair of the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault, Chair of the Greater KC Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association, Chair of Hand-in-Hand Folk Art Collection and served on the board of the Junior League.

When you have free time, how do you spend it?

I spend a lot of time cycling—it’s one of my favorite hobbies. My husband Mike and I have been doing the Register’s Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa for 25 years. I also enjoy doing yoga.

Do you have summer travel plans?

Other than our bike ride across Iowa at the end of July, I’ll be traveling to Ireland with some of my college friends. We have a few days in Dublin and then we’ll stay at a charming house in the quaint town of Dingle. It’s a peaceful place for walking and just enjoying my dear friends, and, oh my, the people in Ireland could not be any nicer.

FASHION,

Meet Darci Jacob, Owner of Downtown’s Darci Boutique

Darci Jacob can’t remember a time when she wasn’t obsessed with dressing others.

She managed the very popular women’s store Cache from 1997 until it closed in 2015. Her talent to assist clients to look their best and her passion for high-style fashion did not stop when Cache closed. She opened her own boutique, Darci, eight years ago. Now, Darci is known for her trendy, sparkling, and eye-catching ensembles.

Jackie O’Brien (her right hand), whom she has worked with for 20 years, followed Jacob to Darci, and together along with Debbie Greb (left hand) provide some of the finest couture guidance and customer service anywhere. They are engaging, fun, and positive, and the shop totally reflects their enthusiasm.

Top Brands & Impeccable Taste

“I want you to be able to come into the store and be wardrobed from head to toe,” Jacob says. She addresses

every aspect of an outfit, including diverse styles of elegant shoes as well as imaginative jewelry and purses.

She has impeccable taste and carries top brands such as Frank Lyman—worn by women who are “daring, confident and unforgettable.” Other favorites include the edgy, urbane, and bright clothes of David Cline, and brands of similar types that are equal expressions of unique style: AZI, Tribal, Clara Sun Woo, Jess and Jane, Last Tango, Elliot Lauren, Eva Varro, Liverpool, Jeff Lieb, Onyx and much more. Many of Darci’s brands are available in sizes from 0 to 20, but with exclusivity in mind, Jacob selects a limited number of sizes of each.

“As a boutique, I don’t want you to see yourself coming and going, but I can always special order something for you in your size,” says Jacob.

It’s All About The Customer

“You know it’s all about the customer. You go into these big stores now and you can’t even find people to help you. But from the moment you walk into our store, I want you to feel special, like you are number one.”

Jacob, it seems, is always working. Even though the shop has set hours, it is pretty much open whenever you need her. Recently, a client’s future daughter-in-law ruined her wedding dress the week of the wedding. The family met with Jacob after hours to find the perfect wedding dress just in time.

In the rear of the store, Jacob created a fancy Shangri-La where those waiting for their friend, spouse, or partner can relax and imbibe. Wine, beer, champagne, and munchies are served as they wait for the inevitable fashion

show from whoever they came with. Jacob shared that a new cigar bar just opened on the corner±—a great addition to the block and another great place to wait while your friend shops!

“We want our clients to feel good when they leave the store. Sometimes they don’t buy anything because it might not be the exact right thing. I will recommend another store that might be better for them. As I said before, it’s all about the customer.”

Giving Back

Jacob finds little precious time for herself, but when she is not working, she tries to go to the beach once a week. “I like to go from 9 to 11 or 12 in the morning when it less crowded and I can get a parking spot. I take my book, or listen to a movie on my phone, and just veg out. I also love to go see my son. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and lives in Virginia. He’s my baby. My husband and I are very, very lucky.”

Jacob is also committed to the community she serves. She is an auxiliary board member at SPARCC (Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center), and she has served as fashion chair since 2017. This past season’s event at the Ritz-Carlton was sold-out with 650 of Sarasota’s most fashionable fashionistas!

From 2016 through 2019, Jacob assisted in the fashion shows for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Suncoast “Live, Laugh & Love” event at the Ritz-Carlton.

At Sarasota Military Academy, where her son attended high school, Jacob was the rifle team president for four years and served as PTCC Treasurer.

She is the currently the president of the Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association, the organization that puts on the tree lightning at the Plaza at Five Points and the New Year’s Eve Pineapple Drop.

“Yes, I’m lucky. I’m very blessed. You need to give back to the people who have made you. You need to give thanks.” And give back she does to many charities.

You can explore some of Darci’s fabulous styles online at darcishop.com, or better yet, stop into Darci at 1441 Main Street, Downtown Sarasota (941.330.2800), and see for yourself. Jacob and her team would love to style you from head to toe!

advice from a plastic surgeon

40 SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2023
40 SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2023

Board-certified plastic surgeon and lifelong artist and sculptor Dr. Alissa Shulman, M.D., F.A.C.S, is known for being a great listener who gets to know each patient and assess what’s important to them and what is realistic. She promotes healthy lifestyles and patient education to ensure the results she achieves will last.

Dr. Shulman has served as Section Chief of Plastic Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital since 2011 and was the first woman to be named Chief of Surgery from 2015 to 2016. She was Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s 2017 Physician of the Year, Chief of Staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in 2020, and President of the Florida State Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2020.

We asked Dr. Shulman to share a few of the questions and concerns she hears from her patients and she kindly obliged!

My implants are getting close to 10 years old. What should I do? Are you having a problem with the implants? Do you still like, or even need them? Specifically, how have you and your breasts aged?

If you still like your implants and how they look, honestly, just leave them alone for now. The ten-year timeframe was created somewhat arbitrarily. Recent recommendations by the FDA include routine evaluations—all paid for by the patient. If implants were put in for cosmetic reasons, an insurance company is very unlikely to cover removal.

If there is a clinical problem, then it is unlikely that a radiologic exam is going to change the recommendation for implant removal. If there is no clinical problem, and you are happy, I recommend leaving them until you are unhappy or there is a problem.

Fortunately, as we age, our breast tissue usually expands as the density decreases. There is often more tissue than you remember, and more skin droop. Another issue with aging is image. The larger and curvy breasts of youth turn into the matronly breasts of maturity. Sorry ladies!

Whenever possible, I often recommend implant removal and mastopexy (breast lift). If we still need a little more upper breast volume, I can usually find some unnecessary fat to transfer to the breast.

The one surgery I usually try to avoid these days is implant replacement in the mature breast. Patients are rarely as happy with the replacement as they were with their original implants.

Patients cannot help but remember what their breasts originally looked like, and do not fully accept the natural change of aging—skin support, tissue density, and more. I believe as we age, our chance of developing breast cancer increases, and examination of the breast should be made simpler.

This is a very good conversation to have with your plastic surgeon.

My pants don’t fit, but my weight is still the same. What’s going on and what can be done?

If you are in your menopausal years and have likely lost an inch or two of height, this is a natural byproduct of aging and “shrinkage”. When one loses height, it is lost in the lower torso. However, the same intra-abdominal contents exist and take up the same volume as it always did. Your internal organs need somewhere to go, so decreased length becomes increased width. There is no actual “fix” for this, there is no option to re-lengthen the spine.

An abdominoplasty may tighten the abdominal skin, but the resulting appearance would be both tighter and rounder (not smaller) and ultimately worse. If there is any significant external pinchable fat, liposuction may result in a smaller waistline. This is best done as a circumferential liposuction—removing a little bit of fat at the waistline and flank. This may also create the illusion of a longer torso.

My breasts are droopy, and I have lost my upper pole fullness. Do I need implants?

Most likely you only “need” a mastopexy (breast lift). Implants only make the breasts larger and don’t truly lift anything. Ultimately, implants used to lift ultimately result in more droop and more skin. Often, implants commit you to more surgery. An aggressive breast lift can be combined with a little fat grafting (injecting drops of fat in the hollow areas) to achieve a youthful appearance. If there is ample native volume, then an aggressive lift is the best option, and it’s all still you.

When I wave, my upper arms wave back.

Unless there is a true “wing deformity” (so much excess skin that it looks like a bird wing), there is likely just a small amount of excess skin superimposed on a relaxed triceps muscle. When you wave, you are partially flexing your biceps muscles, but your triceps are fully relaxed and “floppy” (giving the appearance of a loose upper arm). A good test for this is to flex your triceps muscles while strongly extending your arm, and check for any extra hanging skin. If there is none, or a minimal amount, then it is best to add weightlifting to your exercise routine. This will increase your muscle volume and help shape this upper arm area. If there is still true excess skin, then a brachioplasty might be a good option. Please understand that this procedure leaves a very visible scar.

GALA st AR s

e vent Directors, p lanners & c hairs

We’ve all planned a few parties in our day. But how about a party for 300 or more? Now that’s a lot of work! From fun themes to passionate speakers to enticing auction items, great food, and more, we go behind the scene with some of our most talented event directors, planners, and chairs.

You can’t think of event planning in Sarasota without Mary Kenealy Events coming to mind. With over 25 years of national experience, Mary Kenealy is widely recognized as the preeminent wedding and event planning and management firm and DMC in the market.

You have been planning some of the biggest events in our town for years. Which has been the most memorable? There have been so many events that have been memorable in different ways. They all have something very special and meaningful that touches each audience. The Dick Vitale Gala is such a unique fundraiser

tied to a larger-than-life personality like Dick Vitale and the national reach of our sponsors, celebrities, donors, and guests. This weekend event has a tremendous impact on the local economy with hotels, restaurants, private airports, transportation, and other services. But most importantly, the funds raised each year for pediatric cancer research are record-breaking with over $68.1 million raised over the past 18 years.

Have there been any events where something unusual happened that you had to deal with unexpectedly? In the event business and in Florida, you expect the unexpected to

happen when it comes to hurricanes, red tide, major storms, illness, and other unavoidable conditions. COVID was truly the unexpected for the entire industry. The projections and daily reports were changing constantly making it very difficult to assess and advise your clients. We were doing our best to find solutions, alternatives and walk our clients through everything. Like most, we entered the world of the Virtual Event and had to get very creative, very fast to make these events as interactive, engaging and enjoyable as possible. It was unprecedented in our time.

You planned the Sarasota Arts Performing Arts Hall Gala this year. Tell us about it. The Sarasota Performing Arts Center/Van Wezel Foundation Inspiration Gala is always a very beautiful, glamourous, and greatly anticipated event. There is an excitement in the crowd as they arrive and are greeted with champagne and pose on the red carpet for photos. It is such a lovely location on the bayfront where guests wearing their finest mix and mingle during the sunset. As guests walk into the dinner tent, the decor is always a showstopper. After dinner and the program for this past Gala,

guests enjoyed Kenny Loggins in concert—his last tour. An After Party came next in the Grand Foyer and Terrace with music and dancing. Among the guests, a Tom Cruise impersonator took photos with guests and danced. It’s a full night and a memorable one that guests return to each year.

Your company has been the exclusive planner of the Dick Vitale Gala since its inception. What is is like working with Dickie V on this spectacular event? Dickie V is the most energetic, dedicated and inspiring person you will ever meet. He expects much but he gives so much 24/7/365. He is amazing and sets high goals that all of us always meet and exceed. To have consistently raised the bar repeatedly and have guests say each year “this was the best,” is so gratifying and spurs us on to higher goals.

Which events are you involved in next season? This season, we are already well under way with the 19 th Annual Dick Vitale Gala on Friday, May 3, 2024. We are also thrilled to be working again on events with Sarasota Opera and the Van Wezel Foundation as well as Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s. There are so many worthy non-profit organizations in Sarasota and they are filled with such generous, kind-hearted people. Additionally, we plan and manage corporate events and weddings which are both going strong in our industry. For these clients, we have both local and out of state and international bookings.

This lady has been known in town for years for her impeccable taste, attention to detail, and keen vision. So it is no wonder that former SAKS 5th Avenue general manager Sally Schuile was six years ago as Community Engagement Director at Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation. She plans four signature events and two stewardship events for the Foundation ever year, which not only deliver a great experience, but most importantly, deliver record-breaking funds in support of Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

What changes have you seen in your events since joining SMHF relative to attendance and fundraising? We have four very different signature events each serving a different target audience. Attendance for all has grown year-overyear and each sells out quickly. We have incredible support from our donors and our ability to raise funds at the events continues to increase.

By now, we are known to be mission-focused on each event. Our guests know that by providing our health system with critical resources, they are making an impact on the health and well-being of the entire community—today and for the future.

Which is the most fun event you do each year? That’s hard to say! Isn’t every event “fun” in its own way? I love the Gala because it is such an elegant evening. I love Rock the Roof because it is a very out of the box event. I love

Women & Medicine because it is so educational. I love our golf tournament because it is the end of the season and I get to spend time with all the SMH vendors and staff that come out to play!

Which one is the hardest and why? I would say Rock the Roof is the most challenging event we host.

Executing a party for 1,000 guests on a rooftop is quite an undertaking! I tracked walking close to 20 miles that weekend between set up, event, and take down. The logistics involved in getting all the food, beverages, furniture, and equipment to the top of a parking garage is challenging not only for us, but every vendor involved. There is only 7-foot clearance on the garage ramps. We are so grateful for some of our best vendors and the SMH team for helping to make it happen.

Do you have any new plans for any of the Foundations’ events for the upcoming season? We are looking at South County. The new SMH-Venice Hospital is up and running and already expanding so the time is right to bring our brand of events to Nokomis, Venice, North Port, Englewood, and Boca Grande. Folks in our county are so very grateful to now have two excellent hospitals to serve us. And if anyone hasn’t seen SMH-Venice, it’s worth the trip. The hospital is truly stunning. I have been delighted to co-chair the Selby Gardens Orchid Ball for the past seven years.

In addition to its fabulous theater productions, Asolo Rep has so many different events during the year. From donor thank you events to season announcements to opening night dinners, educational events, and signature events. We asked Tori Layton, Special Events Manager at Asolo Rep, for a peek behind the curtain of planning these events.

What is the process of planning these behind the scene? The first step is right now! I’m currently looking at the calendar and scheduling events around our show schedule, securing venue contracts, and sponsorships. Once we get closer to our event dates, I start to look at the design images for each show itself. What era is it set in, what textures stand out, what details are most eye catching. Working closely with great sponsors like Flowers by Fudgie makes it easy. They have such an eye for color and always make the most luxurious and beautiful arrangements to complete the table settings.

The Starry Night Dinner Series is a hit year after year. Please tell our readers about these very special dinners. What makes our Starry Night dinners so amazing is the intimacy. We host these dinners in beautiful homes thanks to the hospitality of our donors. Each dinner is accompanied by a private performance from the show that the event is inspired by. Guests can get the

chance to speak one on one with the directors, actors, and leaders of the theatre.

Who selects the theme for the Gala each year? Can you share any news of the 2024 Gala? The Gala theme is decided in collaboration with our Gala co-chairs. The goal is to choose a theme that reflects our current season. With the variety of shows in our upcoming season, we have a big decision to make. Whichever theme we choose its sure to come with the glitz and glamor the Asolo Reps Gala has always been known for.

With a new Producing Artistic Director and with the search for a new Executive Director underway, will there be any changes or additional events this coming season? There will be some new faces around for sure. As for now we are on track with Opening Nights, Starry Nights, the Annual Gala, and all events in between. There are sure to be a few surprises along the way, but they are still in the works now.

How does one get involved with Asolo Rep?

There are so many ways to be involved with Asolo Rep! We are always looking for corporate sponsorships, event sponsors, and donations at all levels. Please reach out to us at development@asolo.org to learn more.

While planning and directing events is a job in itself, to chair and co-chair an event comes with its own unique set of responsibilities. Ashley Kozel gives us some insight on chairing one of Selby’s more well known and sought after events, the Orchid Ball.

Tell us a little bit about your lengthy experience cochairing the Selby Orchid Ball. I have been delighted to co-chair the Selby Gardens Orchid Ball for the past seven years. The event happens seamlessly. The creative decisions belong to Selby President & CEO Jennifer Rominiecki and the design team at Selby, who are amazing! The core gala team consists of the Selby team, Nicole Kaney of NK Productions, Flowers by Fudgie, and Micheal’s On East, who have all been working together for years on Orchid Ball. Because of this, and perhaps more than other events, the Orchid Ball co-chairs take a less active role in shaping and executing the event. We do offer some creative input, but primarily we help promote the event to attendees and secure sponsors. The Orchid Ball is so beautiful, people want to attend and it often sells out ahead of time without our efforts.

Now I know I said the Orchid Ball happens seamlessly, but we haven’t been without our bit of drama! Luckily some of ours came during the day the event took place— not during it. This year, one of the other co-chairs was bitten by a snake while we were doing morning set-up. A few years back, the sprinklers were not turned off and the water doused some of the tables and chairs inside the tent. I am very much looking forward to the 2024 Orchid Ball. Get your seats early! And while I co-chair the Orchid Ball, I have other favorite events in town that I attend. We are so lucky to have so many great ones to choose from and so many worthy causes to support.

Elizabeth Moore, another prominent chair and sponsor in the Sarasota area, shares some behind the scenes stories of her many events.

You have chaired so many events throughout the past several years. Which ones are nearest and dearest to your heart and why? I only chair events that are nearest and dearest to my heart! Mainly institutions that have to do with our environment—Conservation Foundation’s Palm Ball, Brunch on the Bay, the Climate Adaptation Center Climate Champion Awards, and this year I actually co-chaired two events that are more arts and cultural related: The Hermitage Artful Lobster, and Sarasota Art Museum Art Bash. When I sat down with Virginia Shearer and Laura Woods of Sarasota Art Museum, I initially hesitated as I tend to focus on events that have a direct impact on the environment. However, we talked about the importance of art and how it can project meaning on the world. The museum has many installations and exhibits that are about nature and community, and I realized the impact of that art had everything to do with climate change and our natural world which struck my heart. Nature informs art and art projects issues onto the world. I realized I could be a part of that.

Your name is on the biggest tennis tournament in this town—the Elizabeth Moore Sarasota Open. How has this event grown throughout the years? I started being the title sponsor years ago, under different management and a different location than what we have now. When we moved the event to Laurel Oaks, it was a very successful event, but the latest tournament, hosted at Payne Park, I feel was the best yet. I’m very proud of last year. The tournament came under new ownership, Remington and Steve G. They not only took it to a new level, but allowed me to be very much involved—to find sponsors, to navigate the VIP hospitality aspect, to get wonderful volunteers and unique prizes. We had trophies that were created by local artist Jorge Blanco, which added the extra touch of Sarasota. The whole tournament was elevated to a huge, successful sporting event!

What are some general thoughts or advice you might have on being a co-chair? One of the things I worry about is giving a really thoughtful, relevant speech. It always pays off when people come up to me after and tell me I speak from my heart, or that my words touched them. That’s the best kind of feeling ever—to feel like you’ve made an impact.

I also advise not to worry about going to an event alone! It’s so easy to slip into the concern of not having a date, but I find it’s much more important not to miss the event. You always end up having a blast either way. When I am a chair and I like to host a table. One thing I do that’s a bit unique is to have very differing groups of folks at my table. A gala is for fundraising—and of course I always contribute!—but often I bring people who can’t afford the cost of a seat, such as

70 SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2023 • insi D e R •

artists, students, musicians, or regular nonprofit people. I want their community represented, and to introduce them to the cause.

I think one of the hardest parts of being a chair is being so busy leading up to the event. I recall this past year leading up to the Elizabeth Moore Sarasota Open, I was so entranced with coordinating the players, the sponsors, the hospitalities, etc., that the day of the event I looked in the mirror and realized I hadn’t been taking care of myself! I was so lucky to have friends, and local beauty services and boutiques to help me pull it together.

What events can we expect to see your name attached to in the upcoming season? As I mentioned earlier, I give careful give thought to the events that I decide to chair, and whether it gives meaning to me or to the community. One event coming up is the Science and Environment Council Green Living Expo and Environmental Summit, which takes place December 2,3, 5, and 6 at the Van Wezel. We already had the kick off party last Friday!

The other albeit more controversial event is the New College Clam Bake. New College has been a hot topic lately, so this was a big decision. To really understand the whole situation, I did a little soul searching, and looked to many people for advice; some friends on the board, as well as some of the professors, the foundation, and my co-chair Don Patterson. There’s so much to save about New College—the people, the students, the honors

college. The Clam Bake raises funds to support the graduate programs in economics, education, marine science, and I think that’s more than worth working towards. The event will be on Thursday, November 2, and I hope to see many faces there.

SARASOTA MILITARY ACADEMY: DEVELOPING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Stepping onto the campus as a Sarasota Military Academy (SMA) class of 2013 graduate, Jessiah Straw’s heart swelled with memories of pressed uniforms, early morning formations, and the camaraderie shared among his fellow cadets.

Reflecting on his time at SMA, Straw remembers his thoughts and expectations when he first began as a student at the school.

“By the end of my freshman year, I will have overcome my hesitation for public speaking, practiced conflict resolution, learned the basics of first aid, and built disciplined habits for attention to detail and the pursuit of excellence that will serve me for life.”

“By the time I finish my junior year, I will have more practical leadership, team building, and project management experience than many of my peers at other schools will have over the first 10 years of their careers.”

“When I finally graduate from the Academy four years after that first day in formation, I will feel a great sense of accomplishment for the transformation I have undergone as a cadet, and I will also feel a great sense of loss for leaving behind an organization that empowered me along the way.”

Expectations achieved!

Sarasota Military Academy’s unique environment provides a value-rich education and strong character development that focuses on college and career preparation. SMA instills leadership skills and fosters personal growth, enabling each cadet to excel and make positive contributions to society.

“Our mission at Sarasota Military Academy is to provide a safe and structured environment where every student is a cadet and every cadet is a leader,” said SMA-COL Christina Bowman.

“Through our JROTC program (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corp.) and the cultivation of values-based leadership skills, we empower our cadets to become leaders in their own right and equip them with the tools necessary for future success,” said Bowman.

SMA is a public charter school serving grades six through twelve on two campuses. Now, with a waiting list for its middle and high schools, SMA attendance is in high demand. Parents are seeing how SMA provides students a quality education paired with structure focusing on

72 SARASOTA SCENE | JULY 2023
• insi D e R •

Army core values, and they want that for their children. The demand is coming both from established local families, and new families moving into the area from out-of-state.

SMA-COL Christina Bowman, who serves as Head of High School and CEO, knew that accepting a position at the academy in 2009 was the right decision. She loves that a student will often see her at the beginning of the day and beat her to the punch to wish her good morning.

“The values, the structure that it provides to the students, it’s small and very family-oriented,” she said. “Seeing how respectful the students were, the ‘yes ma’am,’ ‘no ma’am,’ ‘please,’ and ‘thank you,’ I knew it was right for me and I never looked back.”

SMA is regularly involved with outreach as good citizenship is part of character development. This includes partnerships throughout the community that add value to the experiences and education the cadets receive. Selfless Service is instilled from day one and the cadets learn how to make an impact in their local area and beyond. Some examples are SMA’s partnership with Newtown Connection for mentorship and tutoring of younger students at the Boys and Girls Club of Newtown.

Other values such as respect, honor and integrity are also included in character building of cadets. These character traits are often rewarded with great opportunities in the community. It’s no wonder Bowman says that Publix calls the administration to tell them they’re hiring locally.

“They like that our cadets will have an intelligent conversation with adults,” she said. “They’ll look you in the eye and shake your hand. These are the soft skills we teach and that’s the expectation we have.”

Though it’s common for some to assume that as a military school, SMA is a reform school, these misconceptions are quickly disproved. SMA can only provide a structured and nurturing environment within a small class size. At times, that becomes the remedy in resolving challenges students may have had at other schools. There are many stories of cadets who are now successful and happy, yet they started out not wanting to attend the school initially. Being in SMA’s structured environment allowed them to thrive.

Another misconception is that a large percentage of graduates at SMA end up going into the military. While they do have a strong military emphasis, SMA’s main focus is developing leaders who will make the world a better place and be successful after graduation. These opportunities often include

continuing ROTC through Service Academies, paying for college through ROTC scholarships, getting college acceptances in and out of state, enrolling and gaining certifications and diplomas in trade schools, and joining the workforce through a career in the local community.

Still, Bowman says about 20% to 23% end up enlisting in the military on their own motivation. For 2023 graduates, two were accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Another two were accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy, one to the U.S. Naval Academy Prep School, and another to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

In addition, $2.5 million in scholarships were awarded for the 2023 small class of 149 cadets, including 8 ROTC scholarships. SMA cadets were also commended for their commitment to community service with over 14,000 hours, averaging about 100 hours per cadet.

Currently SMA’s graduation rate is about 95%, while the national average varies from 84% to 87%.

Bowman emphasizes that they don’t use the word “discipline” to describe the school but prefer to use the word “structure” because it reflects what daily life is like at SMA. This structure provides a positive and predictable environment where both students and staff know what to expect, and what’s expected of them.

It’s something Bowman appreciates herself.

She loves the mornings at SMA, starting her day with a cup of coffee, checking her emails, and then with the cadets leading in formation. The uniforms are inspected, and the flag is ready for the pledge, and after a moment of silence, “the head and the heart are ready for the day,” she says.

“You have a battalion, and you have the leaders in charge of those companies, and they are leading to make sure everything is in place.”

Most high school JROTC programs only have one battalion, while SMA has an entire regiment, with five battalions, which is also unique.

Bowman says they plan to grow the campus to 700 students, but they don’t want to get too large. The smaller class size and building capacity fosters better learning and that family-feel everyone at the school appreciates.

SCENES FROM THE PAST

You’ve heard the catch phrases and you certainly know the voice that echoes from the man they call Dickie V. And while that’s “Awesome Baby,” that’s not all there is to this man. Here’s a look back at a few questions from Gus Mollasis’ interview with Dick Vitale in Scene’s May 2012 issue.

Describe your childhood and what the greatest thing that your parents taught you about living a good life. My childhood was epitomized by my parents who were uneducated but had a doctorate in love. My dad pressed coats and through my mom and dad I learned about love, family and respecting people. They never went to high school but they had within them every element that makes a great American. They had pride and a great work ethic and they knew how to do things the right way. My mom would say, “Richie (she never called me Dick) never ever believe in can’t. Don’t let can’t be part of your life.” When I was growing up, I wanted to be a coach. I had people telling me you can’t do this, you’re not a great player. Be realistic. When I got rejection letters from colleges where I wanted to coach, my mom would say, “You are going to make it someday. You have something special within you and that is your spirit for life which will help you get to the top.” My parents were my heroes and my role models. So I thought long and hard over decisions that I would make because I never wanted to disappoint them and break their hearts. Life is simple. Make good decisions and good things happen. Make bad decisions and bad things happen.

When you were a child, you lost an eye in a tragic accident. How did this impact your attitude in life?

I hardly remember it. But I do remember my mom saying, “Don’t use that as a crutch or an excuse for being successful in life. You can do anything that anyone else does.” Those words really motivated me. I have my Master’s Degree but I learned more at my dinner table than any class I ever took. My dad would come home from the sweat factory and put the money on the table and say Mea, here is some money for insurance and food and we always had that little extra for Friday night pizza at Barcelona’s. Looking back, I remember telling my daughters that we didn’t have money, pizzazz and a lot of the things we have today, but we had so much love and we lived like millionaires.
