I
IF YOU’RE A BOOMER, YOU PROBABLY KNOW PEOPLE LIKE THIS: they bought their home in the early 70s for $60,000 in an area of town that wasn’t widely known at the time. They would tell you that the home needed some care, but it had a lot of character. They would tell you it was their start in life in “an up-and-coming community.” They stayed in their home for decades, taking pride in lovingly restoring and updating it. The neighborhood grew steadily in popularity and as their town grew into a small booming city, their neighborhood eventually became “the place to live.” That $60,000 in the early 1970s became an investment for their retirement and when they recently put it on the market they received more than the asking price and walked away with $1.2 million. Come on. I know you know someone (or maybe more than just someone) who had this good fortune. I was not one of those people. In fact, I stupidly sold a 2/2, 1750 square foot apartment in New York City on 57th Street and 3rd Avenue with no mortgage in 1990 for $475,000. Today, it is worth close to $2 million. Now $475,000 certainly was no chump change, but $2 million sounds a whole lot better. I know they say never look back, but that’s one that still gives me agita (Italian for heartburn). When I think of these real estate success stories that became a long-term investment for retirement, I can’t help but think of the children of the fortunate baby boomers who were able to cash out on their real estate investments. They’re finding themselves having to spend a lot more for their home, or they are priced out of the market, or they are buying houses they struggle to stay in just because they hope the value will continue to rise in perpetuity. The fact is, our city is growing and at a good clip. Inventory is dropping. The last report from the Sarasota-Manatee Association of Realtors stated: “combined inventory in the two-county area decreased by 14 percent from March 2017.” Plus, savvy people are remodeling and getting more for their homes and then opting to downsize. Where does that leave our

young professionals? Will they have the same opportunity for real estate investment as their boomer parents or grandparents? I don’t have the answers, but I do know there is a drive to build more affordable housing in our area. To my knowledge, they are mostly rentals. Here is an answer I do have for young professionals. Work with a local Realtor who really knows the market and our town. Tell the Realtor you want to find the best priced house per square foot in an up-and-coming area that has held or increased in value. Make sure the house doesn’t have any big money problems. If it only needs updating and minor repairs, don’t shy away. Buy it. Do updates and repairs as you go along in your life. Live in it. Enjoy it. And while the property value might not rise like it did for your boomer parents, it will rise, and you’ll have a nice nest egg when you’re done.

om and Sherry Koski moved to Sarasota nine years ago from Connecticut. The move was more of a homecoming than a retirement plan for Tom, who graduated from Sarasota High School in 1978 before heading to New York. Tom met Sherry through a mutual friend and lovingly explains, “She was the woman of my dreams.” The couple has been inseparable since and recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Now retired, Tom and Sherry spend much of their time and resources on local philanthropic causes focused on health, children and education. The couple recently co-chaired The Bash, a fundraising event for the Education Foundation of Sarasota County, where Tom is completing his two-year term as board chair. He is also president of the Koski Family Foundation and serves on the board of the Sarasota Orchestra. Sherry is on the Board of Directors of The Pines of Sarasota and together they will chair the organization’s 70th anniversary luncheon, the Wit & Wisdom of Aging this November at Michael’s On East. The Koski family has historical ties to the Education Foundation of Sarasota County. Tom’s mother, Beverly Koski, served as board chair twenty years prior and was part of the group that founded the organization’s signature grants program. It wouldn’t have always seemed like a natural transition for Tom to follow in his mother’s footsteps. Ironically, Tom hated school when he was young, a surprise to many in Sarasota who have heard Tom speak passionately about the value of education. He subscribes to the “time bandit theory” explaining, “We all have pursuits we enjoy so much that, in the act, time disappears. For me, it was music.” Tom feels that if we can help students identify their “time bandits,” we can uncover their natural talents and help feed them. Tom proudly describes many of the initiatives supported by the Education Foundation of Sarasota County, whose mission is to “enhance the potential of students, promote excellence in teaching, and inspire innovation in education, guided by strategic philanthropy.” In addition to awarding almost $250,000 annually for classroom and school-wide grants, the organization is investing close to $500,000 in college and career readiness. Starting as early as middle school, the primary objective of the foundation is to prepare students to graduate with postsecondary plan. In August 2018, Student Success Centers will open at North Port and Riverview high schools as an extension of the Education Foundation. These centers will serve as a hub for students to develop well-defined college and career plans and includes online resources, test prep and career chats. The Education Foundation also underwrites and produces Ignite Education, the teacher of the year awards celebration. What makes a good teacher? Tom feels it goes beyond simply classroom teaching. A great teacher connects with their students, creates trust and offers inspiration. He adds that “Usually, when the bus arrives at a school to surprise a teacher of the year, the students are happier than the teacher. The care and passion for teaching is evident.” It takes parents to enhance their child’s success in school. Tom encourages parents to get involved, help with their children’s homework, and talk to teachers to understand the goals of the classroom.
The learning process does not stop when school is over. Tom strongly believes in after-school programs that provide students with an explanation to why their education is so important and how it will apply after they graduate. Tom shared that as a student, he couldn’t see a connection between what he was learning and how it applied to a potential career. Internships, volunteer opportunities and community mentors help create this connection. Then there are programs that hold students accountable that award scholarships based on goals and achievements, such as Take Stock in Children. To Tom, incentives and reasons are not the same thing. “Tom and Sherry are genuine and humble,” noted Jennifer Vigne, President of the Education Foundation. “They give because they truly care about the mission of the organization and want to make a difference in the lives of our children. For them, it is never about recognition.” Tom and Sherry think often about the future of the Education Foundation and the need to raise awareness. The organization has transformed during the six years Tom has served on the board; the mission has been revised and a strategic plan put in motion. Serving 43,000 students and 2,500 teachers in Sarasota County without much fanfare, the Education Foundation is one of the most impactful youth organizations in Sarasota. For Tom and Sherry, there’s still more work to be done. “When the Education Foundation becomes the ‘go-to’ for work related to K-12 education, we will know we’ve made it.”

Part of that office will be a presentation center for specific projects, including The Collection, his other new Sarasota projects, and an island development, Sailrock Resort, on South Caicos in the Turks and Caicos that includes resorts, a marina, a golf course and private estates and villas. Interested individuals will be able to come to the presentation center to have a private review of the projects. “I’m extremely excited about The Collection and the initial interest that we have received. SEVEN-TIME STANLEY CUP WINNER

I
N THE 1967 STANLEY CUP FINALS, the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Montreal Canadiens, capturing their thirteenth Stanley Cup – the last time they would do so. When they won, a 24-yearold lifelong Maple Leafs fan Jimmy Devellano was on his way to forging what was an unlikely lifelong career in hockey starting as a scout for a 1967 expansion team, the St. Louis Blues. Today, 51 years later, Detroit Red Wings Vice President Jimmy Devellano knows more than ever just how hard it is to win a Stanley Cup and he should. Jimmy D, as he is known in the hockey world, has been responsible for helping build seven teams that have won the coveted trophy, arguably the toughest championship to win in any sport. As I sat in his downtown Sarasota condo, the sun shone and palm trees swayed on our picturesque Bayfront, but Jimmy D hardly noticed. The TV was on and it was tuned to a hockey game.

Sitting in his slice of paradise, he watches with keen interest as a goalie the Wings recently traded away is gunning for a win. “If Mrazek wins another game that improves our draft pick.” For Jimmy D, it’s always been about the draft, and in his opinion, NHL draft picks are the life’s blood of building a good team. His talent for team building has earned him a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame. It’s no accident that Jimmy D’s likeness in the Hall is in the builders category for crafting not one, but two dynasties in the National Hockey League – first with the New York Islanders, who won four straight Stanley Cups with Jimmy D being a part of three of them. “A great hockey team. Four straight Stanley Cups. A team that won 19 straight series before we got beat by the Oilers in 1984. I’ll tell you something, that will never happen again, a team winning 19 straight best of 4-out-of-7 series.” With success coming relatively quickly for the Islanders, from expansion team to Stanley Cup champion in eight years, a confident Devellano headed to Motown with a chance to help a “pizza man” named Mike Ilitch (founder of Little Caesar’s Pizza) build a winner. “I thought I could do the same thing when I arrived in Detroit and I promised that we could do it—win it all in about eight years.”
It didn’t quite go according to plan. As early playoff exits mounted, everybody in the organization felt the heat and pressure to win, especially general manager Devellano. Even with the legendary Scotty Bowman at the helm, the Wings couldn’t get past the hump and win the Cup. They were ousted in the first round by upstart San Jose in 1994, followed by a Stanley Cup sweep to the New Jersey Devils in 1995; and finally, a stinging defeat to the Colorado Avalanche in the 1996 Conference Finals that saw the Red Wings, a team that won a record 62 games, once again fall short. In 1997, a good part of the Stanley Cup solution came via a bold trade that landed Brendan Shanahan. But as the Red Wings were poised to win their first Stanley Cup in 42 years, the man who helped build the team into a perennial winner felt little joy. “That first Cup in Detroit was a sense of relief for me. When I went to Detroit from the Islanders, I promised everyone—the owner, fans and the media—that we would win a Cup in eight years. I felt we could duplicate the plan I used in New York to have an expansion team drinking from the Cup in eight years. My commitment, and one of the things I insisted on, was building the team through the draft, and I took heat for it at times when I wasn’t trading any draft picks.”

Mike Ilitch & Jim Devellano 1982 “For you, a fan, winning the Cup was a great joy. For me, I was a happy, but more than anything I was relieved because I made a lot of promises and I wanted to keep my word.” Sadly, the celebration was short-lived, as six days after the Cup win, a limousine accident ended the career of Vladimir Konstantinov and severely injured Sergei Mnatsakanov, while another player, Viacheslav Fetisov, sustained minor injuries. Jimmy D remembers, “The joy was sucked out of the city, but fortunately we had five days to celebrate without knowing what would happen.” “In 1998 we rallied as a team and repeated as champions while dedicating the season to both our fallen Wings, as we wanted to win it for both Sergei and Vladdie.” I asked Jimmy D about Vladdie’s condition some 21 years after the accident. “It’s relatively good news considering everything he went through. He’s alive, not in wheelchair, and he’s able to use a walker. You’re able to have short conversations with him and his memory is good. Vladdie is living with a wonderful family in Ann Arbor. I just saw him a couple of weeks ago at the premier of the film The Russian Five, which was phenomenal.” Jimmy D loves the game; that much is obvious. His place in it is legendary. When his mother was asked why Jimmy never married, she would smile and say because he is married to hockey. The love affair started rather innocently and by accident. “How did I get to my first hockey game? My dad won tickets to the first hockey game I ever attended in 1956. I fell in love with the sport. It’s surreal. How the hell did you get to be general manager in the best hockey league 86

in the world? I was a ninth-grade dropout and had a blue-collar upbringing with no sports background. How did I get here?” He wears his love of the game on his sleeve. “I loved going to the infamous Maple Leafs Garden. The white ice, the speed, the beautiful blue sweaters with the iconic Maple Leafs crest. And who would be there that night playing at my first game? Gordie Howe and the Detroit Red Wings. Who would know that at age 13, while I’m seeing my first live game, that someday I was going to manage that team? It was beautiful, just beautiful.” The story of how he got into hockey is just as improbable as winning seven Stanley Cups. “My parents ended up buying season tickets through my teen years. As I entered my twenties, I was working for the federal government and coaching minor hockey at night, going to Maple Leafs games and OHL junior games. I was a hockey nut. Then, in 1965, with an expansion announcement, the NHL doubled from 6 to 12 teams with teams in LA, San Francisco, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.” “I don’t know why I decided I would only write to one general manager—Lynn Patrick of the St Louis Blues. Why did I pick him and St. Louis? If you’re looking to get into the game, wouldn’t you write all six? I can’t look you in the eye and tell you why I picked Mr. Patrick.” “Mr. Patrick, I go to all the games. I would like to scout for you for free in the Toronto area.”
“Looking back, it was really no cost to me. I was going to these games anyway. He took me up on it and I started filing reports for him on junior players and NHL players. My own scouting reports. Scouting is the least glamorous job, but to me it was glamorous. He liked my reports, and after that year he put me on the staff and paid me. That was 51 years ago. And now, here I sit in Florida, 75 years old and still on the Red Wings payroll.” “You know what I’ve said in life. Generally, when you come out of nowhere, you need an angel and somebody to take a chance on you. I’ve tried to help a lot of people like that. But more often than not they are dreamers who don’t have the passion and the work ethic. They want it to be easy and you can pick that out real quick.” “How did I get here? I don’t know; I guess it’s in my DNA. But what’s funny is that if you knew my parents, grandparents and my background, there was nothing that would indicate that Jimmy Devellano would become a hockey guy. They were not even close to being hockey fans. Not even close.” As the sun continues to set on our talk, another playoff season begins and teams steady themselves for a run at the Cup. Jimmy D speaks from experience balanced by knowledge and is a bit haunted by the pressure of just how hard it is to win a Stanley Cup. His Sarasota perch would be a good spot take in one of those Stanley Cup parades that often take place in the winning team’s city. Just over the bridge on St. Armands, the owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning is building a mansion which could

Past St. Armands on Longboat Key is where Jimmy D was first introduced to the area by his friend and coach of his Islanders – an eight-time Stanley Cup champion, the late, great Al Arbor. Knowing what this man knows, I had to ask Jimmy an obvious question. “Jimmy D, how hard is it to win the Stanley Cup?” He smiles, actually winces a bit, as if he had one of those undisclosed injuries hockey players tend to hide during a Stanley Cup Playoff run. “Pretty #@#@ing hard,” he says. “Really damn hard. There are 31 teams, and each year there is only one parade. If life was fair, then in a 31 or 32-team league, you’d win the Cup three times in a century. Look at Buffalo and St. Louis—never won a Stanley Cup yet.” He doesn’t have to tell me that life isn’t fair; I’m a Detroit Lions fan. When Jimmy D arrived as the Red Wings’ general manager back in 1982, Little Caesar’s Pizza founder Mike Ilitch was hungry for a Stanley Cup and eager to fill his half-empty seats. He was giving away K-Cars at hockey games to boost attendance. Jimmy delivered big, and the Red Wings won four Cups under his watch. And while Jimmy is content winning seven Cups in his career, there was one chance to win the Cup in 2009 that got away - a stinging game seven loss to Pittsburgh that bothers him to this day. “Yeah, that’s painful. There’s probably not a day that goes by that I don’t think about that series. But I had to let it go. There a lot of good hockey people who’ve never won a Cup. The best example is Emile Francis, a great hockey man, and it just didn’t happen. So, I’m super blessed.”

The hockey game on the tube is almost over. “We got eleven kicks at the can in the draft. Eleven picks that may help us get back to competing for a Stanley Cup. There are no guarantees. And it’s not easy. The fans have to be patient. Look at Toronto. They’re building, they’ve got some good players, but they’ve got no guarantees to get past Boston.” Who does he like to win this year’s Stanley Cup? He says that Tampa, under the guidance of General Manager Steve Yzerman, the Red Wings hero Jimmy D chose way back in the 1983 NHL draft, has a good shot at winning the Cup this year.
“Let me ask you as a fan. Can you imagine if we hadn’t won the Cup in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008 how bad not winning that one in 2009 would have felt then? For me personally, if I hadn’t been involved in those three Islanders Cups and the four Cups with the Wings, losing in 2009 would have been a terrible pain the rest of my career. I’ve been in hockey 51 years and to not have won a Cup would have been devastating.”
As I get ready to leave, I see that the hockey game has ended, and the ex-Red Wings goalie has notched another win, improving the Wings’ position in the June draft. As of this writing, the playoffs will be starting, and it is the second straight year that the Detroit Red Wings have missed the playoffs after making them for an incredible 25 years in a row.
The words hung there. I could not imagine that. His thought made us both pause. Me, the fan, asking the questions to the greatest

In a lot of ways I’m most proud of that.” As I head out the door and into the fading sunlight, I am left with just one more question—one that I am afraid to ask after a couple of cloudy hockey years on The Road to Hockeytown (a shout-out to the 2008 book on Devellano’s life with the NHL). “Jimmy D. When do you think the Wings will win their next Stanley Cup?” Jimmy D smiles, and, after a brief pause, shoots back a slap shot. “Maybe never,” he says. Forever the scout and sensing his words wounded this Wings fan, he adds, “Red Wings fans just have to be a little patient. In time, we’ll get there. The goal is to build a team that can compete for the Cup.” Who would know this better than the man with seven Stanley Cups? JUNE 2018 | SARASOTA SCENE

OUTREACH AND EDUCATION AT THE MANATEE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Here’s my challenge/invitation to you. If you haven’t been to the Manatee Performing Arts Center, try it out. You won’t be disappointed. If you HAVE been there, go again. Things keep getting better and better and better. Whether you’re in Stone Hall or the smaller Bradenton Kiwanis Theater, there’s a sense of Old Broadway charm to this venue on the Riverwalk in Bradenton that makes every event there enjoyable. Plus, the 2018-19 lineup — the 70th season! — is sure to please, including popular shows such as Elf The Musical, Newsies, and A Christmas Carol. But they’re also hosting the world premiere of Into the Night, as well as a remake of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic Pirates of Penzance though this version will be about . . . wait for it . . . the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. Beyond putting on a great lineup of shows, a key thing to know about Manatee Performing Arts Center is all the work that the Manatee Players do to connect with and educate the community. For example, their Action Through Acting program pairs social issues with organizations that highlight that issue. The theme of each production highlights a crucial issue affecting our community and, hopefully, serves as an impetus for important conversations. One example of this is a recent show they put on with an affiliate partner, the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg. 2.5 Minute Ride is a one-woman play (the first time they’ve ever done that, Producing Artistic Director Rick Kerby points out) that tells the story of her father taking the journey back to Auschwitz and the roller coaster ride that trip became for the entire family. Kerby explains that performances like this are “a great way for us to put a spotlight on fellow nonprofits — those that serve our community.”

DraMature, the resident 55+ theater troupe which just celebrated its five-year anniversary, has a core group of about 25, though the ranks understandably swell during snowbird season. The group has a full range of members, ranging from first-time performers to an actress in her 90s who’s been on stage for most of her life. Kerby explains that “we welcome everybody, so long as you’re willing to get on stage and take a chance.” In return for weekly acting classes, they serve as ambassadors for the Manatee Players, doing performances at senior centers, community events, and nursing homes. And several times per year, the group puts on their own shows at Manatee Performing Arts Center, including musicals. This past January, they did an abbreviated version of Guys and Dolls to fine reviews.
Recently, Kerby brought improv to DraMature. While the idea initially received a lot of groans, many came to watch and before long, everyone jumped in. Pretty much the whole group is now involved with improv and enjoying it tremendously, he reports. There’s also a Manatee Performing Arts Center collaboration with the Early Learning Coalition where, during the school year, area preschoolers are brought in to experience theater — often for the first time. “We do three or four shows in a day, and the house is packed,” Kerby says. “One group goes out to meet and greet with the actors, take photos, and talk about what happened as the next group heads right in. We have as many as 1,000 students come

Photography by Diane Broda through in a single day, and we do this two to three times per year.” The Early Learning Coalition provides the busses to bring the students in, and they also send them out the door with books that connect with the show they just saw. The kids sing and laugh and have a great time. Manatee Performing Arts Center also has a theater summer camp program where they hope to foster the actors and audiences of tomorrow. Students in the two-week Kidz Camp do junior versions (shorter scripts) of actual shows. This year, it’s The Lion King Jr. In July, there’s a 3-week Broadway Boot Camp for older and/or more theatrically experienced kids where they perform an entire show, such as this July’s The Little Mermaid. It’s the full version, too — not an abbreviated or shortened one. The show takes place on the main stage and the kids fully produce it, from set to lights to props to everything else that goes into a quality production.

“Theater teaches us so many things,” notes Kerby, who’s starting his 15th season at Manatee Performing Arts Center after a career in acting, directing, and teaching in New York City and elsewhere. “It gives you perspective by seeing through another person’s eyes. It helps you understand the world in other ways. It teaches us empathy. Nothing like theater connects you as powerfully with other people.” Kerby admits that he’d never worked in community theater before, so his expectations were “exceptionally low” when he came for the job interview so many years ago. But he quickly fell in love with it. “There’s NOTHING like people doing something because they love to do it. They have one motivation — get on stage for an artistic outlet. They’re doing it for passion, not a paycheck.” Kerby is quick to point out that the talent level here, too, is amazing. “I feel lucky that so many community members want to be a part of all that’s going on here.” So, I invite you again: go to Manatee Performing Arts Center this summer or during the 2018-19 season. Or get involved in one of their many outreach efforts. There’s a lot going on here and they’re doing it for me, for you, and for all of us.

Meet Artist
JUDY DEMPSEY
Judy Dempsey, owner of Art Explosion of South Florida, finds much of her inspiration below the waters of the Gulf, especially in the tropical reef fish, coral, and game fish. Above the waves, she’s inspired by the beauty in the flowers and animals that inhabit the shoreline. Dempsey began to exercise her artistic talents painting on canvas before being commissioned to paint her first mural for a large hotel chain, for which she received rave reviews, prompting her to start her company, Art Explosion of South Florida. Since opening Art Explosion, Dempsey has painted countless residential and commercial murals – including for the Miami Seaquarium, libraries, hotels, and even the tv show Tanked on Animal Planet – as well as on virtually every type of surface, from canvas to tables to stools and even rugs. Dempsey’s work has been covered by the Palm Beach Post, the Sun-Sentinel, Marlin Magazine, and Florida Design (and now, Sarasota Scene!). She’s worked in conjunction with the cities of South Florida, as well as taught art appreciation to children in low-income communities. Dempsey recently relocated to Sarasota, where she’s already left her mark with murals at Amoré Restaurant as well as a handful of residential works. InHEALTH WHEN SHOULD I SEE A DOCTOR ABOUT THE FROG IN MY THROAT? By John Paul (J.P.) Gniady, MD, FACS
Nearly all of us have been there before: The phone rings. You lift it to your ear and go to say a simple “hello.” What comes out, however, is a sound more closely akin to that of a small green amphibian than your normal voice. The person on the other end of the line double-checks to confirm they have the right number. Then they ask if you’re sick. Maybe you had been. Or maybe you were just fanatically cheering your team to victory the night before. Then again, maybe you weren’t. And maybe you’re getting tired of friends and family not recognizing your voice. The question is: When does an annoying change in the voice represent a genuine health concern? When is it time to see a doctor? And what type of doctor do you see? The answers may differ based on the person and the situation. The threshold is likely to be lower for a Principal artist with the Sarasota Opera than an aspiring author working in isolation at their beach house. The health risk is likely higher for someone who’s been smoking for decades than for an eleven-year-old on the cheer squad. The short answer is that persistent changes in or loss of voice is never normal. It may or may not represent a serious health concern, but either way the problem is almost always fixable. The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery gives us guidance on this matter with their Clinical Practice Guideline on
Hoarseness published in March. In this evidence-based document, it is recommended that anyone with hoarseness persisting for more than four weeks be evaluated by a physician who can perform direct visualization of the vocal cords. Ideally, this would be by a laryngologist––an ear, nose, and throat doctor who has undergone further subspecialty training in voice and swallowing disorders. The Guideline further advocates for earlier evaluation in certain scenarios. These include patients who have had recent surgery (particularly of the head, neck, or chest), those who rely on their voice for their livelihood (over 30% of all workers), those with a history of tobacco use, or anytime there is associated difficulty breathing or a palpable lump in the neck. The hardest part for many patients is making that first decision to come in for an evaluation. Some are genuinely afraid of what we may find. Others think their problem isn’t serious enough to warrant “wasting the doctor’s time.” Still many others think that voice loss is just a normal part of aging and that there’s nothing that can be done. As I mentioned above, whether we find something concerning like a cancer or something as mundane as vocal abuse, there is almost always something that can be done to alleviate the situation. The voice evaluation includes a detailed history of the problem and background including other medical conditions, medications

Your doctor will then perform a thorough examination of the vocal cords and should be able to review that examination with you to help you understand the problem. Together, you can decide on an appropriate course of treatment, but the first step is picking up the phone and saying “hello.”

Eat &Drink A Tale of Two Main Streets By Rick Dakan A main street expresses its town’s character, offering visitors a sampling of the whole community, a walking tour of what makes it unique. Above a certain size, cities don’t have them - they have shopping districts or main drags or waterfronts. But Sarasota County has two exemplary versions of the Main Street: one in downtown that’s busier than ever, and the other in Lakewood Ranch, which offers a carefully curated version of the classic form. Downtown Sarasota’s Main Street is booming, and only longtime locals will remember when it was a moribund collection of empty storefronts and plentiful free parking. With apartment buildings and hotels springing up on every corner, new restaurants and bars continue to crowd in with enticing offerings, while old favorites keep on doing what’s made them great for decades. Lakewood Ranch was once the epicenter of growth in the area, a place that didn’t even exist until the end of the last century. Its Main Street was built from whole cloth, a unified, manicured few blocks of wide sidewalks and piped-in background music. Both are anchored by movie theaters at one end, both get insanely crowded during big events, and both offer some great options for eating before, after, or during the show.
BREAKFAST
For kickstarting your day, Sarasota’s Main street has Pastry Art (1512 Main St) for a quick morning meal, which is several cuts above the chain cafe experience, and Lakewood Ranch has a Starbucks (8155 Lakewood Main St) for those on the go. But the real Lakewood treat is Station 400 (8215 Lakewood Main St). A sister location to the original restaurant in downtown (a third location is opening in the Landings Plaza on South Tamiami Trail), Station 400 is one of the best breakfasts in town, whichever one you choose. The truffle eggs benedict is the way to go, but there are plenty of pancake, egg, and other choices. For Sarasota, there are a lot of options, including the venerable First Watch, but when I have time for leisurely service and great food, I pick C’est la Vie (1553 Main St). The long-running patisserie’s crepes and omelettes are always great, but I’m a sucker for a good Croque Madame and an extra croissant on the side.

Almost everything’s open for lunch on both Main Streets, so there’s maximum choice here. Each downtown has Nancy’s Bar-B-Q (8141 Lakewood Main St and 301 S Pineapple Ave) which is always a good choice, but I often go for Italian when I can’t choose between so many options. Sarasota’s Cafe Epicure (298 N Palm Ave, at the corner of Main Street) has been serving authentic, stylish Italian food since 2000, and has an impressive array of charcuterie options, but I always come back for the Spaghetti Carbonara, which few other places do right. Lakewood Ranch’s Italian offering is just as strong and stylish; Main Street Trattoria (8131 Lakewood Main St) makes a good carbonara too, but I like the pizza and sandwich offerings there for lunch.
DINNER
Lakewood Ranch’s restaurants offer about one of every basic cuisine for dinner: Italian, Japanese, Mexican, seafood, and classic Americana all have good options, but Paris Bistrot (8131 Lakewood Main St) captures the essence of this main street’s experience. It’s cozy, classy, and welcoming, with classic french fare that’s both familiar and special. The cassoulet and bouillabaisse are the ultimate fine dining comfort food for me. Sarasota, on the other hand, is rich in fine dining options from one end of Main Street to the other, with at least a dozen delicious options. One of my favorite local gems is Melange (1568 Main St), which features an inspired and creative menu. Treat yourselves to one of their monthly Crafted Dinners, 5-course dinners with paired wines and spirits to match the unique themes.

I realize that’s not super helpful, so let me offer this. I respond well to: • Books that have heart. • Books that resonate. • Books that are skillfully written. • Books that matter. In short, a book that doesn’t in some way excite me—or my reader friends, or my Ringling College students, or my wife, or my writer pals, or my own family—is unlikely to be included.

cover 3 per issue, so 36 books per year. This means that 75% or more of the books that are sent to me will NOT be included in “Literary Scene,” and that (sadly) has included books written by my friends, colleagues, and neighbors. THE RHINO IN RIGHT FIELD by Stacy DeKeyser Stacy DeKeyser is the accomplished writer of books for young readers such as The Brixen Witch, One Witch at a Time, and Jump the Cracks. Her latest, a historical fiction tale titled The Rhino in Right Field, has a far more robust sense of humor than her other books while still deftly tackling themes/issues reader will appreciate, such as kid rivalries and the age-old parents vs. kids dynamic. Set in the Midwest in the late 1940s, this novel follows the story of Nick Spirakis, a 12-year-old kid who’s on a first-name basis with a 2,580-pound rhino named Tank. This rhino—a Diceros bicornis, we learn— lives in the city zoo, just beyond the fence where Nick plays right field. Maybe “plays” is the wrong word. As Nick admits: “To be perfectly honest, I couldn’t catch a fly ball to save my life.”

I
t finally happened. The other day I was comparison shopping for cereal in the Winn-Dixie on Fruitville Road (Cap’n Crunch or Cocoa Pebbles? Raisin Bran or Cookie Crisp?) when a woman rolled her cart next to mine and just kind of stood there. Her demeanor fluctuated between stalker-y lingering and loiter-y bystandering.
in the pre-dawn haze of some Saturday morning at Ralph’s (it’s a Publix-like grocery chain in CA—keep up!)? Pshaw! You have to understand— writers generally aren’t recognizably famous. Sure, you know the names of the Really Big Ones. But do you know them from their faces or their book titles?
She stared.
If you had a lineup consisting of, say, E.L. James (the Fifty Shades author whose net worth exceeds $80 million) alongside an avocado, two pounds of WD brand boneless chuck roast, a 32 oz. jar of Claussen dill pickles, and a 4 lb. package of Dixie Crystals sugar, I’d bet dollars to Entenmann’s donuts that you’d have a hard time picking out the celebrity writer. Unless she was sporting velvet-lined handcuffs, of course, but then again, pickles can get pretty zesty too, so maybe that clue wouldn’t be enough.
I stared. She stared back. Then she said those magic words I’d been waiting my entire life to hear: “You’re the one who writes the thing for that thing.” Cue celestial trumpets. Bring on the Entenmann’s party cake. Release the Mylar “Congrats 2018 grad!” balloons from behind the Winn-Dixie service desk.
Why aren’t more writers spotted-inWinn-Dixie famous? I think it’s clearly due to three reasons.
Humor columnist Ryan G. Van Cleave has been Spotted in the Wild. “So, this is fame?” I mused to myself in that moment, suddenly deciding that heck yes, I’d skip the Buy-One-Get-One deal on Cap’n Crunch and get the non-BOGO item I really wanted: Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Celebrities don’t bother with BOGOs. They probably also refer to Cinnamon Toast Crunch by its far fancier-sounding French name: “Croque-Cannelle.” I suddenly wondered how much a personal shopper charged. Buying one’s own cereal didn’t seem exactly celebrity-ish. I mean, do you REALLY think Jennifer Lawrence—or even Martin Lawrence, for that matter—might be caught pricing corn flakes
Reason 1—People simply don’t bother glancing at author photos on dust jackets. And if we’re being totally honest, most people don’t even know what a dust jacket is. (It’s the detachable outer cover on a hardcover book—it has folded flaps that hold it to the front and back book cover. Don’t say that increasinglymore-famous-by-the-day humor writer Ryan G. insider The woman had more to say on the matter, though. “I’ve been wanting to ask you . . .” I confess: I grew a bit nervous at her pregnant pause. What huge celebrity-worthy question was to follow? And what if TMZ caught me sputtering some dumb response to her and the story got splashed all over the Yahoo headlines and turned into a media frenzy? Yikes! I suddenly realized I needed serious media training. Some world-class interview-handling coaching. Was I wearing a striped shirt, too? Were the lines vertical or horizontal? Which shows up worse on camera and makes you look more Seth Rogen than Ryan Reynolds? I realized in that terrifying moment that my media-savvy IQ was precariously low. I needed to buckle down and be the celebrity my public demanded of me. Wow—this was going to take work. And fast! The future president of my fan club, standing there before me in Winn-Dixie, repeated: “I’ve been meaning to ask you . . . where do your ideas come from?” Crap. All that came to mind in that moment were what other famous people had already said in response to that. I realized that it’d been an uncomfortably long period of quiet, so I choked this out: “I’ve got three monkeys locked up in my basement and they bang away on typewriters nonstop. That’s where my best stuff comes from.” She seemed nonplussed, but she responded with an: “I see.” Me to myself: “What on EARTH did I just say? Were cameras rolling? Is Perez Hilton lurking behind the deli counter with a parabolic mic and a camera with a telephoto lens? After a moment, she said, “Nice to meet you, Phil.” Phil? PHIL? Umm. Errr.
