arasota is a city that perfectly balances luxury living, cultural richness, and a strong sense of community. It is the perfect blend of vibrant culture, stunning natural beauty, and a relaxed, upscale lifestyle. From world-class golf courses to impactful social initiatives, Sarasota offers something for everyone.
Sarasota most definitely offers a very “good life”, which is the theme of this month’s issue.
I am sure everyone’s definition of a good life is different. For me, it is filling my days with learning new things, outdoor activities, culinary delights, and collaborations with people and organizations that help our community thrive.
The past few days are evidence of my good life. I had an extraordinary meal at Michael’s on East. On my way to Carousel to pick up a delicious home-style breakfast. I had a chat with my friend Megan Howell, Executive Director of Second Heart Homes on Main Street, who is helping the homeless. I went that evening to opening night of Twelve Angry Men at Asolo Rep, which I thoroughly enjoyed. In the Jack Dusty lounge, the fun night spot at the Ritz-Carlton, I gathered with friends, and someone else I knew at the bar took our group photo. Everyone was smiling and having a great time. I enjoyed a walk on Siesta Key Beach, went pontoon boating with friends on Sarasota Bay, cycled the Legacy Trail, chatted with visitors, and recommended they experience Sarasota Art Museum, and shopped at Morton’s Market for some epicurean delicacies.
And this is supposed to be off season…hmm.
For our Good Life issue editorial, we proudly feature The Concession Golf Club and Country Club—a jewel in Sarasota’s crown. Designed by golfing legends Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin, this private golf club offers an unparalleled golfing experience. The course is renowned for its challenging layout, pristine conditions, and stunning natural surroundings.
But what is even more special about The Concession, was its hosting this past December of the inaugural World Champions Cup, a three-team, three-day stroke play tournament sanctioned by the PGA Tour. Major golf champions, hall of famers and legends of the game over the age of 50 formed Team USA, Team International and Team Europe. The tournament is scheduled to return to The Concession in December 2024, and again in 2025 and 2028. For the many golf enthusiasts in our town, this is so exciting!
When it comes to international travel, the good life is very much alive and well. In fact, luxe travel is the one segment of the travel industry skyrocketing in popularity. Scene writer Christy Pessemier explores four fabulous resorts from around the world. My personal favorite is the Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como. Its elegance, the lake, the vibe, and its many amenities puts it number one on my travel wish list.
In furtherance of our good life travel content, we also feature local luxury travel guru Malaka Hilton, whose agency, Admiral Travel, is part of Virtuoso Travel’s prestigious invitation-only network. Hilton grants her clients access to exclusive, unparalleled experiences otherwise unavailable to the public. Now that’s the good life!
For performing arts enthusiasts, the good life abounds in Sarasota. Sarasota Opera, The Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Orchestra, Florida Studio Theatre and Asolo Repertory Theatre offer world-class performances year-round. Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall hosts an array of concerts, Broadway shows, and other events, ensuring there’s always something captivating to enjoy.

In our monthly Around Town article, we feature the new visionary leader of the Sarasota Performing Arts Center Foundation—Tania Castroverde Moskalenko. This foundation supports the arts education programming at the Van Wezel and advances the development of a new performing arts center.
After a national search, the board of Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation selected Moskalenko to champion arts education for the Foundation and lead the vision for the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center in The Bay. Her goal is to elevate the Center’s profile and make it a premier destination for world-class performances.
In the spotlight this month are the contemporary art exhibitions this summer at The Ringling. You can experience four different thought-provoking contemporary art exhibitions featuring unique pieces made by artists from all over the world, including some from right here in the Tampa Bay region. Check these exciting exhibitions out in this issue!
It is an exciting time indeed for the future of performing arts in our town, and I can’t state enough how important the impact of the arts is on a community’s success.
When it comes to the health and well-being of our community, Sarasota’s many philanthropists, stellar non-profit organizations, and top foundations are leading the way for a good life for all. There is no doubt that the programs and services provided and supported by many, enable a good and better life for those who need a hand.
I encourage you to read in this issue about Sarasota’s Streets of Paradise. This organization’s initiatives and grassroots efforts are aimed at addressing homelessness in the city. It is a volunteer-driven organization that provides essential services such as clothing, food, and hygiene supplies to those in need. They also work to connect individuals with housing resources and support services, helping them transition off the streets and into stable living situations.
Our community also greatly values education and The Florida Center’s Starfish Academy is a shining example of this commitment. The academy provides early childhood education and therapeutic services to children with developmental delays and disabilities. Its holistic approach supports both children and families, fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment. Please read more in this issue in our Education Matters article.

Building Bridges
The Transformative Impact of the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee’s Capital Campaign
By Hallie Peilet Young
From Community Unity to Holocaust Education, how a Visionary Campus Is Shaping a Brighter Future
If you’ve driven down McIntosh Road past the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, you know from the construction that there is always something new and exciting in the works.
Much of the Jewish Federation buzz lately is about The Ora at the Joel and Gail Morganroth Event Center. While it is an elegant new event venue on the Jewish Federation Sarasota-Manatee campus, it’s is really about community.
“The Ora is essential to our mission”, says Jewish Federation Sarasota-Manatee CEO Shep Englander. “We chose to convene the Jewish community, welcome newcomers, and help people make friends and find their own unique path into the community.”
That’s the work he says the Federation has been doing for all these years without a venue like The Ora.
“For over 15 years we’ve been presenting programs such as the Mort Skirboll Jewish Film Festival, the People of the Book series, and welcoming important thought leaders to connect people, which is at the forefront of our mission,” Englander said.
This mission of connection has always been important, but even more so after the heightened terrorism Israel has been facing since October 7.
“Now, we have a more inviting, more appropriate place, where people can come together, feel safe and make memories,” Englander said.
That’s what you support when you book an event at The Ora.
“Everyone was very excited about it before the pandemic, and then everything paused during the pandemic,” Englander said, but the organization’s fundraising efforts never truly stopped.
When they began the capital campaign in 2019, they hit the ground running, raising about $19 million in a mere eight months. Englander came aboard in 2021 and shortly thereafter hired Chief Development Officer Hermione Gilpin so they wouldn’t lose momentum on raising the funds to grow Federation’s campus and deepen the organization’s impact.
“The campus vision was to respond to not just the Jewish community’s needs, but the entire community’s needs,” Englander said.
To date, the capital campaign has raised more than $31 million, which includes funding to build the Chaifetz Holocaust Memorial and Education Center, Camp Yonnie, a brand-new Jewish day camp, and The Ora. Englander and Gilpin give much credit to previous Federation community leaders—Tommy and Karen Bernstein, Stacy and Ben Hanan, and Patti and David Wertheimer as initial chairs of the capital campaign who raised the first $19 million, as well as Federation professionals — Howard Tevlowitz as CEO and Rich Bergman, Ilene Fox, and Gisele Pintchuck

as Development Officers at the time the campaign was taking shape. Englander also credits Kim Adler, Chief Operating Officer, as being ‘instrumental’ to the success of the campus project from the start.
Not knowing at the time how rampant antisemitism would become globally in 2024, JFSM had the foresight to build out their campus with several educational and commemorative pieces like this one.
“The Chaifetz Holocaust Memorial and Education Center certainly speaks to that issue and serves as a resource for not only school age children, but for teachers, and for people trying to make sense of what happened since October 7,” Englander said.
“It’s going to be a memorial to the Holocaust and the survivors, but it will also be an immersive outdoor exhibition space with sculpture and space to reflect. We hope people leave asking, ‘How do I become an upstander?’” Gilpin said. “How do I respond in the face of intense hate and prejudice and show up for my fellow humans?”
The Education Center will complement the extensive Holocaust education and teacher training that the Federation has been doing for 65 years because of its longstanding relationships with Sarasota and Manatee County schools. Not only will it serve as a hub for educational field trips, but it will provide opportunities for community groups, locally and regionally, to visit and learn.
Hadassah Strobel and her husband, Marty, donated to support the Chaifetz Holocaust Memorial.
“Marty’s mother lost her whole family in the Holocaust; she was the only survivor of her big family,” Strobel said. “My stepmother and her sister survived Auschwitz after enduring heartbreaking loss of children, siblings, and parents. To honor their memory, we want to be sure to educate the next generations.”
Another project in the Federation’s capital campaign, opening this summer, is Camp Yonnie, made possible because of the incredible support of Ron and Geri Yonover and their family. The Jewish day camp will welcome campers entering grades K thru 5 from all faiths and backgrounds,

while emphasizing traditional Jewish values, like giving back (Tzedakah), community (Kehillah), and diversity (Givun).
Federation donors Marcy and Michael Klein believed in the need for Camp Yonnie and supported the development of the primary indoor gathering space, The Lodge.
“When the campus vision was first shared with us, the Jewish day camp immediately spoke to us because our families have beautiful memories of camp,” Klein said. “For us, it was bashert (Yiddish for ‘meant to be’) that not only could we support a project we care about, but that we could do so alongside some of our close friends.”
The Ora, Camp Yonnie and the Chaifetz Holocaust Memorial may seem like they round out the campus, but the Federation is just getting started.
“Everything we just described is the front 16 acres,” Gilpin said. “Before we start planning for the back 16 acres, we need to evaluate community needs. We know for sure that a pool is in our future and will not only serve the kids at Camp Yonnie, but will also help us to welcome the broader community to campus through swim lessons, water fitness, birthday parties and more”
Larry Greenspon, the donor who made the lead gift to kickstart the capital campaign, not only named the campus, but also has provided seed funding for the Greenspon Sports & Tennis Complex.
Englander and Gilpin emphasize that these buildings and campus infrastructure aren’t the Federation’s mission.
They are all vehicles to continue spreading and fulfilling the mission. The Federation is a place where people can come together to have important conversations, a place where they feel both physically and emotionally safe.
“Next, our focus is to make sure that the programs, speakers, and conversations we present are at the same premier level as the campus that we’ve been able to build,” Englander said. “We’ve always had high quality speakers, films, and events. Now that we have a beautiful campus to have them on, we want to fine tune and upgrade what we offer, so that the whole experience will be inspiring.”
Personal relationships and connections within the community made the campus expansion possible. Judy Fox, Federation Board member, is one of those donors who has been a pillar of support over the years.
“My father, Jack Weintraub, was the Executive Director of the Federation during the first Capital Campaign to build the campus on McIntosh Road,” Fox said. “Through our campaign gift to the Greenspon Campus for Jewish Life, my husband Eric and I are able to continue the groundbreaking impact that my father started.”
“We’re grateful so many community supporters and donors shared in our vision for the Federation. While everyone has been anxious since 2019 to see progress, they never lost faith in our work and where we were going,” Englander said.
Amid antisemitic activity on college campuses around the country, many Jews fear for their safety and security.
48 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024 • phi L anth R opy •
Englander says it makes the Federation’s work that much more important right now.
“We are grateful for the support we’ve received from civic leaders and the interfaith community. Our job is to continue to bring our community together and recognize that the past few months have been some of the most difficult of our lives. Now is the time to honor and celebrate our Jewish identity and stand strong in the face of those who would rather we remain silent,” Englander said.
Amid the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and so much other hatred in the world, Englander feels proud to be at the helm of a place of unity in our community. The new campus, still a work in progress, will allow the Federation to be an even better partner, he says, in all its pursuits.
“We have the opportunity to be a safe place for the general community to deal with the problems that we’re all dealing with, Jewish or non-Jewish, the toxic politics, the divisiveness,” Englander said. “We don’t take for granted the partnerships that allow us to help keep this region so special.”

CHAMPIONING Hope & Humanity
Greg Cruz & Streets of Paradise
By Joshua Thomas Bray
Beneath the sunlit allure of Sarasota lies a hidden crisis: homelessness. Streets of Paradise (SOP) is at the forefront, tackling this urgent issue head-on with innovative solutions and heartfelt dedication. Greg Cruz, a man of compassion, formed from hard life experiences and whose journey from adversity to advocacy has touched countless lives, founded Streets of Paradise in 2018. This grassroots organization, fueled by love and determination, fights homelessness with unwavering commitment. His rough beginning led Cruz to choose facing hardships head-on and created a path that led him to rise as one of Sarasota’s silent champions to help others in our community.
Growing up homeless and navigating the complexities of the foster care system in New York, Cruz faced abandonment, isolation, and the gnawing uncertainty of his next meal. It was this lived experience that would later ignite a fire within him—a resolve to change lives. Cruz’s mission was clear: fight homelessness in Sarasota and Manatee, where the struggle has intensified over the years.
“I wanted to create something tangible,” Cruz reflects. “A place where compassion meets action. Whenever I am asked about how SOP came about, I feel like people
want this to be a feel-good story, tying my not-sopleasant childhood into this beautiful thing that’s been created. The truth is, I spent most of my childhood and adult life in survival mode with little room to dream. I never forgot feeling alone when I was homeless; I never forgot people not making eye contact when they spoke to me. I remember feeling like I was the only person in the world experiencing what I was going through. Ironically, I suppressed those memories so deeply that I didn’t start to remember them until I began healing, which is when my heart and actions aligned in a way that I had never felt before. Streets of Paradise was born because of that healing.
Cruz’s vision for Streets of Paradise extended beyond mere survival; it embraced dignity, love, and community. The organization’s humble beginnings as an informal weekend outreach soon blossomed into a lifeline for those in need. When the pandemic forced many homeless shelters to close their doors, Cruz and his team stepped up. Armed with compassion and determination, they scoured the region, reaching out to people in need. SOP provided 15,000 meals for 79 consecutive days, ensuring that hunger didn’t compound the crisis. But it didn’t stop there.
50 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024
“We needed to address immediate needs. Hygiene matters. Dignity matters.” SOP acquired a $52,000 custom trailer to offer mobile showers—a simple yet important way to restore dignity. Cruz and SOP continue to combat homelessness in Sarasota with an array of innovative and compassionate programs. Their response to the COVID-19 pandemic exemplified this, as they ensured that the vulnerable homeless population received meals for over two months straight. Beyond immediate needs, SOP has also been instrumental in longer-term solutions. They have implemented a comprehensive system that not only finds housing for homeless individuals but also supports them in making these places homes. This holistic approach includes providing furniture, essential household items, and ongoing emotional support to help new residents settle in and maintain their new living situations.
The vision of Greg Cruz and SOP doesn’t stop at just providing immediate relief or housing solutions. Cruz, drawing on his personal experiences, has steered the organization towards addressing systemic issues that contribute to homelessness. This includes advocating for affordable housing and challenging discriminatory practices that affect marginalized communities. Under his leadership, SOP has become more than just a service provider; it is a pivotal force for community mobilization and social change. The organization has engaged local businesses, community leaders, and volunteers to inspire a collective effort to

address homelessness. But Cruz’s vision extended further. SOP became the go-to organization for those being rehoused. Furniture and household goods transformed empty spaces into homes. “Without furniture,” Cruz explains, “only 15 percent stay in housing.” Each step forward reflects Cruz’s belief in the power of community and his commitment to ensuring no one is left behind on Sarasota’s streets.
SOP’s office, nestled in the Rosemary District, isn’t just an administrative hub. It’s an art gallery called Love-ArtRepeat—a space for community building, fundraising, and operations. The Love-Art-Repeat gallery is a creative initiative of SOP and is designed to be more than a visual showcase. It serves as a vital communal nexus where art intersects with social advocacy. This gallery spotlights the works of local artists, providing them not only a platform for exhibition but also integrating their creations into broader community dialogues and events. Here, art does more than adorn walls—it sparks conversations and actions toward social change.
Under the guidance of Greg Cruz, Love-Art-Repeat has transformed its space into a dynamic venue that hosts a variety of events—from art classes and workshops to community gatherings—all aimed at strengthening community bonds and enhancing the visibility of local talents. These events support Streets of Paradise’s primary mission: to address and alleviate homelessness in Sarasota by involving the community in meaningful ways. The gallery is not just a passive space but an active participant in the cultural and humanitarian upliftment of the community. Its operations and fundraising events
52 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024
are geared towards using art as a tool for social change, reflecting Cruz’s vision of intertwining artistic expression with community service.
“This is about relationships,” Cruz insists. “The physical needs are no more important than love and dignity.”
SOP’s success rests on a foundation of small, private donations and the tireless efforts of volunteers such as Cathy Bryant. “Cathy was part of the magic from the beginning. Serendipitously, our paths crossed in our shared mission, creating an amazing partnership and friendship that has lasted almost a decade,” says Cruz.
Bryant injected fresh energy and perspective into the SOP’s efforts. Her enthusiasm was contagious, drawing in new volunteers and fostering a sense of unity among them. Together, Cruz and Bryant navigated challenges and celebrated successes, buoyed by her unwavering commitment and innovative ideas. Bryant’s expertise in community engagement and her genuine passion for making a difference have been instrumental in shaping the vision for Streets of Paradise. Together with their dedicated team and supporters including Cruz’s children, Brooklyn, Asia, and Nya Cruz, SOP aims
to expand its impact by establishing a comprehensive program that not only provides housing but also addresses the underlying issues affecting our community’s most vulnerable individuals.
Cruz, who didn’t draw a salary until recently, remains committed. “We’re leveling the playing field,” he declares. “No one should feel forgotten.” As Sarasota and Manatee grapple with rising housing costs, SOP’s grassroots approach continues to make an impact.
Cruz, reflecting on his journey from hardship to leadership, shares, “My own journey through homelessness and the foster care system gave me a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those on the streets.” This empathy is the cornerstone of SOP’s approach, which is not just about providing services but creating a sense of family and community.
“We see the people we help not just as beneficiaries of our services but as members of our street family.” This philosophy extends to every aspect of SOP’s operations, from food distribution to innovative housing projects. The impact of these efforts is palpable in the community. This ethos is imbued in every interaction—whether SOP
JUNE 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE 53
volunteers are distributing meals, providing hygiene kits, or helping someone move into their new home, they do so with the care and respect one might offer a family member.
Such a familial approach fosters a sense of belonging and dignity among those served, which is crucial for individuals often marginalized by society. It also encourages a more profound community connection, as those who have been helped often feel a sense of loyalty and gratitude that motivates them to give back to others facing similar challenges. This cycle of support strengthens the community fabric, making it more resilient against the social strains of homelessness. By treating each person as a ‘family member’ rather than a ‘case’ or a ‘client,’ SOP not only changes individual lives but also helps shift societal perceptions about homelessness.
A key element of SOP’s success is its comprehensive support system for those being rehoused. Cruz points out the critical importance of creating a home: “We provide everything needed to turn a new house into a home, including furniture, household goods, and emotional support.” This approach has not only helped individuals and families transition out of homelessness but has also significantly improved their chances of remaining housed.
“We want to expand,” says Cruz. “To reach more hearts, more homes. Anywhere we can help, we’ll be on the front lines. No questions asked. We have always been clear about our ultimate goal, which is a transitional housing therapeutic community with a focus on mental health and substance abuse. We believe that to heal properly, core issues need to be addressed. What better way to accomplish that than in a trauma-informed community setting?”
Greg Cruz and Streets of Paradise remind us that compassion transforms lives when translated into action. As the sun dips below the horizon, SOP’s light continues to shine—an organization of love and unwavering commitment to our community.

Challenging tasks are something Tania Castroverde Moskalenko thrives on. In her twenty plus years leading arts and cultural nonprofits, she has a proven track record of success across many organizational facets including philanthropy, exceptional programming, and positive social impact.
After a national search, the board of Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation selected Moskalenko to champion arts education for the Foundation and lead the vision for the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center in The Bay. Her results driven career includes many impressive arts and cultural leadership positions with her most recent post as ED of the Miami City Ballet.
We are delighted that Moskalenko agreed to answer our questions and share her thoughts on how she will lead Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation into its next phase and ensure Sarasota’s continued future as a culturally vibrant place.
Welcome to Sarasota! It’s been a few months since you assumed your new role at SPAF. What will be different about your approach to leading this important foundation? Thank you for the warm welcome! I’m thrilled to be joining the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation at such an exciting time. My foremost objective is to infuse our organization with a renewed sense of vision and purpose. I’ll be focusing on strategic alignment and maximizing our impact. By identifying key priorities and initiatives that align with our mission and values, we can ensure that our efforts create meaningful and sustainable change. I’m committed to working closely with our staff, board, and partners to leverage our resources effectively and make a lasting difference in the community.
For those new to our area, please share the mission and goals of SPAF. Our mission is to create and sustain a vibrant performing arts center, advance education, and enrich communities by inspiring minds through the power of the arts.
Our strategic goals include: to create a state-of-the-art Sarasota performing arts center that will be a cultural
icon and civic asset; to bolster communication of the vision for the new performing arts center to engender broad support; and, to deepen and broaden the current work in arts education and explore new platforms that enhance quality of life for children and adults through the arts.
Please tell our readers why it is so important for the city of Sarasota to have a new performing arts hall and what do you say to those who are opposed to tearing down our current performing arts hall due to its representation as a landmark example of Sarasota’s Mid-Century Modern architectural heritage. There are two very distinct questions here.
A new Sarasota Performing Arts Center will celebrate community, culture, and nature. Our goals are to surprise and delight audiences, empower learners of every age, nurture innovative artists, and create extraordinary experiences. The Center will be a modern, technologically advanced home for arts and culture, that will celebrate the legacy of the Van Wezel while meeting the needs of contemporary audiences and performers. It will be flood

resilient and sustainable, more regionally competitive, and designed to be inviting and inclusive. Our aim is to break down barriers to arts access and to be an arts center for all.
I appreciate your second question, and I want to share from the heart. Having had the privilege of leading Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre, a 4,000-seat national historic landmark built in 1889, I’ve developed a profound admiration for our architectural legacies. Personally, I hold a deep respect for our heritage and believe in safeguarding it for future generations, provided it doesn’t jeopardize the safety and well-being of our citizens. When it comes to decisions regarding Van Wezel Hall, the Purple Ribbon Committee is studying and evaluating financially sustainable options, as well as the use, purpose, and lease of the facilities. Their thoughtful and meticulous analysis will result in recommendations to the City Commission.
Building a new performing arts hall will be expensive. What is the current funding status and how important is local philanthropy to this project? Local philanthropy will play a crucial role in funding the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center. Traditionally, local philanthropists, foundations, and businesses contribute significant funds to support the construction and ongoing operations of arts and cultural facilities. Their contributions not only provide financial support but also demonstrate community commitment to the arts, which will help attract additional funding from other sources.
We recognize we have an arduous task ahead, but we are preparing for it. Our focus right now is on strengthening our team, management, and planning efforts, bolstering our governance and board, and enhancing our fundraising capacity.
What are your plans to garner more local support? Can we expect more fundraising events like the annual Transformation Gala? To garner more local support, we’re expanding our outreach efforts through multiple channels. We’re planning to host a series of fundraising events throughout the year, including events similar to the recent Transformation Gala. These events will not only raise funds but also serve as opportunities for the community to come together, engage, celebrate, and envision a new performing arts center.
In addition, we’re organizing informational sessions across the city and county. These sessions will provide a platform for community members to ask questions, share their own vision for a new performing arts center, and understand how their support can make a difference. We believe that by fostering transparency and dialogue, we can cultivate stronger relationships with our local community and garner their ongoing support.
Bringing performing arts to local children has been a Foundation mission since its inception. So many schoolchildren are inspired on many levels from the programs offered by SPAF. Please tell our readers more about this. We were founded in 1987 with a mission to support arts education programs at the Van Wezel Hall.

Since that time, our support has reached $17M to ensure that children have access to arts programming. Over the last few years arts education and community engagement/empowerment programs have increased significantly. Not only does the VWH continue to provide schooltime performances for students, but they have also expanded programming outside of the hall. Likewise, the SPAF has created new programs that reach under resourced students and differently abled students. Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, we offer workshops, performances, and mentorship opportunities, fostering creativity, cultural appreciation, and lifelong learning among youth.
You served as executive director of the Miami City Ballet. Have you had the chance to attend a performance by The Sarasota Ballet or any other arts organizations in town? Absolutely! I had the privilege of attending The Sarasota Ballet’s performance in April, which included Las Hermanas , a fabulous work I had never seen by Kenneth MacMillan. The piece is based on Federico Garcia Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba and it’s quite dark and tragic. The complexities of the story, the movement, and the music, kept me engaged the entire time.
I also had the opportunity to attend Circus Sarasota and Cirque des Voix, a partnership between the Circus Arts Conservatory, Key Chorale, and the Cirque Orchestra. Both performances were fantastic!
Finally, I’ve attended a number of performances at Van Wezel Hall. The most memorable was Hamilton because it was the first time my 15-year-old twins saw the show, and I had never seen them so excited about American history!
Exploring a new town is always fun. Once your daily work is done, where can we see you around town? What are some of your new favorite places? Let’s be clear, my daily work is never done!
There are many options depending upon the current state of your breasts.

Taj Lake Palace
Over Lake Pichola, Udaipur, India
The former summer retreat of the royal dynasty of Mewar, this elegant white marble palace has hosted famous poets and writers throughout history. Queen Elizabeth II and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy have also been guests, and the hotel was featured in the 1983 James Bond movie, Octopussy. The recipient of many awards, the Taj Lake Palace is known as one of the most romantic hotels in the world.
Accessible only by boat, Taj Lake Palace is more than a hotel, it’s a testimony to the extensive engineering and imagination of the man who conceived plans for this massive haven—Maharana Jagat Singh II—the 62nd custodian of the House of Mewar. Given the fact that those plans were completed in 1746, it’s no wonder so many guests are enchanted by this priceless treasure. Not only is it fascinating that this lavish work of art is still standing, but the Taj Lake Palace actually floats on the waters of Lake Pichola; a stunning architectural feat considering the size and age of the structure.
While you’re here, you’ll live like a true noble in painstakingly restored chambers furnished with silk and velvet, intricately designed rugs, and elegantly painted walls. The experience is about as authentically regal as it gets because many of the 65 rooms and 18 grand suites actually hosted royalty.
You’ll stay entertained and sufficiently pampered with authentic cuisine and private dining experiences created by master chefs, multiple restaurants including Jharokha, Neel Kamal (Blue Lotus), and the stunning rooftop Bhairo, surrounded by fire-lit torches and the starry night sky. There’s also a bar where you can unwind while enjoying a cocktail and tapas between meals. Don’t miss the luxurious J Wellness Circle spa—housed on a boat that includes a relaxation lounge, steam room, shower, and soaking pool.
Palace amenities also include an outdoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, a 24-hour fitness center, and 24-hour in-room dining options.
Experiences to try: Indulge in a romantic candlelit dinner cruise on the Gangaur, a 150-year-old royal barge, also featured in Octopussy or take a tour from a historian and learn about the centuries of rulers who once resided at the Taj Lake Palace. TajHotels.com

Rosewood Hotel
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico’s Central Highlands

Nestled in the Bajio mountains, and 6,400 feet above sea level, this city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adding to the cultural richness of the location. With its colorful mix of dwellings in every shade of fire—terracotta, clay, golden yellow, and white, San Miguel de Allende has been called the most charming small town in Mexico and “the world’s best small city.”
Word has been spreading about the appeal of San Miguel de Allende, so of course it made sense to build a 5-star luxury hotel with upscale amenities and authentic Spanish style architecture here. The Rosewood was built in 2011 by local artisans and since then it has been recognized as one of the most sought after hotels in Mexico, and the world. This captivating resort is even more interesting and enjoyable because it honors the history of the region, elevating the entire experience.
Each of the 67 rooms and suites include hand-carved artisan furniture, exposed wood beam ceilings, and

Choose from a balcony room with doors that open to look out into the surrounding city, or splurge on a rooftop colonial room with a furnished terrace and breathtaking views. World-Class Course Celebrates Historic Ryder Cup Concession
gracious golf
By Scott Ferguson • photos courtesy of concession golf club
The year was 1969, the course was Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Competition was fierce in the Ryder Cup, a competition of two 12-member teams made up of top golfers in the United States and Europe, played in odd-numbered years since 1927.
The match was deadlocked with two putts remaining on the last hole — the first from Jack Nicklaus of the American team and the last from British player Tony Jacklin. Nicklaus, playing in his first Ryder Cup, made his four-foot putt. Jacklin was left with a two-foot putt. Impulsively, Nicklaus turned to his opponent and conceded the final putt before Jacklin had a chance to make it, ending the match in a 16-16 draw between the two teams.
Later Nicklaus told him (as recalled by Jacklin), “I don’t believe you would have missed that, but I’d never give you the opportunity in these circumstances.” Known ever after as “the concession,” it’s o ne of the most famous acts of sportsmanship in the history of athletic competition — and remains one of only two ties in almost a century of Ryder Cup play (the second was in 1989).
Fast-forward to 2006, when The Concession Golf Club opened in Bradenton, Florida. Nicklaus and Jacklin teamed up to design and create the 520-acre course, dedicated to the spirit of sportsmanship displayed at the historic 1969 Ryder Cup match.
Although there is a stunning residential development near The Concession Golf Club, there are no houses
72 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024
lining the course. As the club’s website describes it, “the setting is the star.”
“This place is natural Florida,” says Brian Weimann, the club’s general manager. “Everything you see here, grows here, but it has a different feel to it than many Florida courses — a lot of pine trees, pine straw, ponds, all natural elements.”
The private club has a non-refundable initiation fee, annual dues and a waiting list. There are roughly 320 members; all of whom are serious about the game.
“We’re about golf, golf, golf… and really good food,” Weimann explains. “Our mantra from day one was that we were going to be a golf club, not a country club. The people who play here are all like-minded. They’re here for high-end golf in Florida, with the relaxed elegance we have here at the club.”
Weimann describes the course as one “where a really good golfer will be challenged, but a more casual player else can still have a good time.” He says the pace of play at The Concession is brisk.
“Out here, most everybody plays fast. You can expect a round of golf to last three hours and 45 minutes or four hours here, where at another course it may take four and a half to five hours, or five hours plus on a busy Saturday
in season. So you get more of an intimate feel; it’s not overcrowded. You don’t have to enter a lottery for tee times. This is very much a traditional golf course, a traditional membership of people who really are here for the enjoyment of the game.”
Two 10-foot Rolex clocks are featured on the course — a rare honor for a club. The prestigious Swiss company, the official timekeeper for major sporting events around the world, chooses the courses where it will place its clocks and selects the clocks’ locations on each course. The Concession is in good company; clubs with Rolex clocks include St Andrews Old Course in Scotland, Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina and Pebble Beach in California.
In addition to the 18-hole main course, players can hone their skills on a nine-hole par three course and a lighted one-acre putting course.
Just south of the club is the 1,200-acre home of The Concession Residences, a gated community with 236 home sites. All of the lots are sold and many already

have houses. Close to the clubhouse, lodges and cottages are available for temporary stays by members and guests.
Since it opened, The Concession has regularly received national and regional accolades. Golf Digest named it “Best New Private Course in America” in 2006, its first year, and ranked it #6 in “Best Courses in Florida” in 2021. In 2014 it was listed in the “Top 100 Golf Communities” by Travel & Leisure Golf Magazine called it one of the “Best Golf Courses in the Southeast” for 2022-23. And every year since 2013, the Tampa Bay Business Journal has named The Concession “the toughest course in the Tampa Bay area.”
Golfers of all ages and backgrounds — including players ages 12-19 in American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) play, senior golfers age 50 and up, and racially diverse players — compete in major tournaments at The Concession. In May 2024, the Nelly Invitational for girls, named for LPGA tour champion Nelly Korda, was held at the club. The winner was 14-year-old Aphrodite Deng.
JUNE 2024 | SARASOTA SCENE 75
The Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA), with a mission of bringing greater diversity and more minorities to the game, held the Billy Horschel APGA Invitational at The Concession in October 2023. Eighteen of the top APGA Tour players competed; Gabriel Lench of Lake Mary, Florida, took home the trophy.
In December 2023, The Concession hosted the inaugural World Champions Cup, a three-team, three-day stroke play tournament sanctioned by the PGA Tour. Major golf champions, Hall of Famers and legends of the game over the age of 50 came together to form Team USA, Team International and Team Europe. The team with the highest point total — Team USA in 2023 — wins the World Champions Cup. The tournament is scheduled to return to The Concession in December 2024, and again in 2025 and 2028.
Weimann notes that “for the World Champions Cup, the teams are made up of Ryder Cup players who are
76 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024
major winners, or golfers who play their way onto the team via their point standing for the year. In the inaugural tournament, we saw golfers playing on our course who were the best in the game over the last 20 years. It’s exciting. The Concession showed itself well and it came down to the last hole on the last day. It was a great event.”
Weimann thinks the World Champions Cup will grow in stature over the years. “I think as players start to get into the 50-year-old-and-up mark, we’ll see some of the names that have been dominating golf in the last 10 years become eligible for this tournament.”
Summing up the theme of The Concession, Weimann says, “Our logo tells a story. It shows Jack Nicklaus walking off the 18th green at Royal Birkdale in 1969 with his arm around Tony Jacklin after he had just conceded the putt to him, which went down as one of the most gracious moments in the history
of the game. And we play off that theme here, with the camaraderie and the sportsmanship of healthy competition. Jack and Tony came together years after that event to design a place that captured what the moment meant to them, and that spirit is alive and well here at The Concession.”

SHINIQUE SMITH: PARADE
Through January 5, 2025
Spanning across six of the Museum’s original galleries, the exhibition creates a series of stories that form an abstract narrative of the “parade” as a metaphor for life.
Smith, originally from Baltimore, now calls Los Angeles home. Through her participation in prestigious biennials and group exhibitions, her impressive portfolio has caught the eye of art enthusiasts. She has been honored with awards from renowned entities like Joan Mitchell, the Tiffany Foundation, Anonymous Was a Woman, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her works have been displayed and collected by reputable institutions such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, California African American Museum, Denver Art Museum, and others.
Well known for her monumental sculptures created from an array of materials including luxurious textiles, personal clothing, dyed fabrics, ribbon, and wood, and for her abstract paintings of calligraphy and collage, Smith’s work in this exhibition speaks to various facets of the European artistic tradition, such as classical drapery and religious iconography, while foregrounding notions of Black femininity and the history of the circus.
The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is widely known for its extensive European collection of art, but what many people are surprised to learn is that it also has dynamic and expansive exhibitions of contemporary art.
Contemporary art, specifically art created by living artists, can feature any medium, but typically pushes the boundaries of existing material and generally focuses on themes such as personal and cultural identity, family, community, and nationality.
This summer at The Ringling, you can experience four different thought-provoking contemporary art exhibitions featuring unique pieces made by artists from all over the world, including some from right here in the Tampa Bay region.
78 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024
“My hope for this show is to create a bridge between differing depictions of people and the art histories that inform my hand, while celebrating the beauty found in our belongings and honoring the resilience and magnanimity of Black women,” says Smith.
Smith’s pieces showcased in the exhibition focus on the essence of femininity through the perspective of a female artist. Through her creations like Inflamed by Golden Hues of Love and Mitumba Deity II, Smith delves into her admiration for the well-defined curves and unwavering strength of Black women, depicted through elegantly shaped figures adorned and covered in gold.
The Ringling’s Chief Curator and Ulla R. Searing Curator of Collections Sarah Cartwright says, “We are so thrilled that Shinique Smith has chosen to present her work to Sarasota audiences within our European galleries, where it will provoke conversation and inspire new ways of seeing and understanding both historic and contemporary art. Shinique chose the works on view in response to The Ringling’s magnificent gallery spaces. The synergy between her work and our collections is palpable, and the Museum is full of unexpected moments of beauty and emotion.”

EMBODIED: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE RINGLING’S COLLECTION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART
Through September 21, 2025
EMBODIED highlights representations of the human figure by some of the most exciting artists of the 20th and 21st centuries featured in The Ringling Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art.
The representation of the human form through art is one of the eldest forms of expression, offering a glimpse into our early history and its storytellers. In artistic works, the human body has long been a prevalent and enduring subject. EMBODIED expands on the definition of the human figure by bringing together diverse representations in painting, sculpture, fiber, video, and mixed media.

“We filter the world through our bodily experiences. We are very diverse, but we share so many similarities as human beings,” says Ola Wlusek, the Keith D. Monda Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and curator of EMBODIED. “The opening line in EMBODIED talks about the figure being one of the oldest parts of iconography recorded. Bodies are, in a literal sense, very much rooted in identity politics throughout time and in the present moment.”
Standouts from the exhibition include mixed media work Still Life with Quilt and Drinking Gourds by William Villalongo, who merges tropes from the European still life painting tradition with elements from Black histories, pop culture, and mass media, and Time and Place: Egmont Key – Indian Territory – LA – Oklahoma, the first abstract painting by a contemporary Native American artist acquired by The Ringling.
“We are excited to have several newly acquired works on display together with other pieces in the museum’s contemporary collection,” Executive Director Steven High says. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the collection through this fresh lens.”

SKYWAY 2024: A CONTEMPORARY COLLABORATION
Through January 26, 2025
The highly anticipated Skyway 2024 exhibition is set to be showcased at five leading art institutions across the Tampa Bay area including: The Ringling; the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg; Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design; the Tampa Museum of Art; and the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum.
While the dates of the exhibition at these locations vary throughout the summer, The Ringling debuts it first, and it’s available to view now until January 26, 2025. Each exhibition at each location is unique and features different artists and pieces. This is the third iteration of Skyway, with the last installment occurring in 2020/2021.
Curatorial teams from multiple museums joined forces to select the artworks featured in Skyway 2024, demonstrating a united effort to present the diverse talents within the region. In response to an open artist call from Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, and Sarasota counties, museum curators carefully assessed more than 300 submissions. Through this initiative, the creativity of local artists is highlighted, fostering a deeper bond between the community and contemporary art.
Christopher Jones, the Stanton B. and Nancy W. Kaplan Curator of Photography and Media Arts at The Ringling, joined forces with Ola Wlusek to co-curate The Ringling’s installment of Skyway 2024.
“There was a call to action that went out to artists in our region to submit proposals. We reviewed and ranked the applications and chose 63 artists or artist groups to include in the exhibition. This is an important project to bring together contemporary artists in our region and show how much the contemporary scene is thriving in our backyard,” said Christopher.
Skyway 2024: A Contemporary Collaboration goes beyond being just an exhibition—it serves as a tribute to artistic ingenuity and the collaborative nature within the Tampa Bay art community. This project promises to leave a lasting impact on the region by shining a spotlight on the artistic voices of the Florida Gulf Coast West Central Region and inspiring future generations of artists and art enthusiasts.

From July 27 through May 11, 2025
Radical Clay, an exhibition of 40 ceramic sculptures by 36 contemporary Japanese artists, all of whom happen to be women, will be on display in the Pavilion Gallery of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Center for Asian Art at The Ringling. The exhibition comes to The Ringling from the Art Institute of Chicago, where it was curated by Dr. Janice Katz, Roger L. Weston Associate Curator of Japanese Art.
“As in other parts of the world, the ability of women in Japan to pursue artistic careers has historically been impeded by the burden of family responsibilities, access to training, notions of respectability, and lack of financial independence,” says Rhiannon Paget, Curator of Asian Art at The Ringling. “While they still face challenges, shifts in social norms and expectations following the Second World War have allowed women to participate more fully in and make significant contributions to ceramic art. This exhibition celebrates their achievements.”
Radical Clay spans veterans of the field such as Tsuji Kyō,, Mishima Kimiyo, and Tsuboi Asuka, to emerging younger artists such as Mori Aya and Kawaura Saki. Their artworks encompass a breathtaking range of styles, conceptual approaches, and techniques. These women have routinely confronted expectations about their practice and often refuse gender-imposed constraints in their work, approaching subjects in unconventional ways.
“There are so many strong contemporary women artists from Japan that are truly pushing the limits in ceramics and clay beyond what we’ve ever seen traditionally,” said Dr. Katz. “This show brings together artists on the cutting edge of invention in terms of materials, glaze, and technique, and we are thrilled to recognize their contributions to the global ceramics field.”
There is so much to enjoy at The Ringling. From its varied exhibitions, classes and programs to its circus museum, beautiful gardens, and dining outlets, please spend some time at The Ringling this summer. Starfish Academy’s Inclusive Model for Early Childhood Excellence at The Florida Center
By Kaileia Suvannamaccha
Located in Sarasota and North Port, The Florida Center’s nationally accredited Starfish Academy serves children aged six weeks to five years with a diverse range of needs. At Starfish Academy, children who are typically developing and those who face disabilities, delays, or vulnerabilities, are equally embraced, and encouraged to learn together.
“Research shows that inclusive models like ours are better for all kids,” says Chief Program Officer, Kimberly Treharne. “Those considered to be developing ‘typically’ gain empathy and compassion. Their social-emotional development really thrives. Those who are struggling in some areas learn from seeing their peers, and that’s powerful. We’ve seen the power of early intervention. Many children who receive therapeutic services during their preschool years can transition to kindergarten without the need for continued support.”
“I get this question all the time,” adds Starfish Academy Director of Early Childhood Education, Amy Robinson. “Why would a parent of typically developing children want to put their child in an inclusion center? Well, our curriculum is top-notch. Our teachers are top-notch.
And the curriculum is open-ended, they’re going to get what they need no matter what developmental level they’re at.”
An Innovative Model for Early Childhood Education
Starfish Academy’s creative staffing approach marries traditional preschool educators with a multidisciplinary team of early childhood professionals, including speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and mental health clinicians, ensuring each child’s holistic needs are met.
“They’re co-located in the same part of the building. Their offices are just a few steps away from the classrooms,” says Treharne.
By integrating formal therapy services into the school day, families are spared the hassle of shuttling their child to and from various appointments and there are fewer disruptions to the child’s routine.
Additionally, consulting and collaborating with professionals enables teachers to adjust their curriculum to suit the needs of each individual child. “It’s really
84 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024

helpful to have professionals trained in how to help that child feel more comfortable, and help the teacher know exactly what to do,” she adds.
A Collaborative Approach to Nurturing the Next Generation
“We don’t just deal with academics, we deal with the child and the family as a whole,” says Robinson, who regularly facilitates monthly parent education workshops. At weekly team meetings, all members of the child’s care team are present. Holistic discussions allow each member to share insights into the child’s strengths and challenges from their respective perspectives, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Treharne shares a heartwarming story of a child who overcame challenges from prenatal alcohol exposure through early identification and intervention. “One in 20 kids are exposed to alcohol during pregnancy, making it more prevalent than autism. Our center has the state’s only fetal alcohol spectrum disorders clinic. Had this child not been identified early, and not received services early on, he would have probably been very dysregulated in a kindergarten classroom,” she says, underscoring the importance of early childhood services in mitigating developmental challenges.
Robinson recalls a wholesome interaction between two young children at Starfish Academy. A typically developing girl with advanced language skills approached a nonverbal classmate to assist with cleaning up after snack time. When the nonverbal child did not respond verbally, Robinson observed the girl switch to sign language, facilitating effective communication between them that led to them cleaning up together. “In August, I will have been in this field for 31 years, and that brought me to tears,” Robinson says. “I just love this program. I love what we do here.”
Exciting Changes and Enhanced Leadership
“We’ve invested in the number one preschool curriculum in the country, called Creative Curriculum. It’s a play-based, hands-on curriculum that incorporates language literacy, mathematics, science, and social-emotional development,” says Robinson.
This year, Starfish Academy introduced the Reggio Emilia method, where the environment is considered the “third teacher,” promoting creativity and environmental awareness. Research has shown that children, especially those with exceptionalities, may become overstimulated by bright colors. In response, the center has opted for a more natural color palette, incorporating earth tones and textures into the environment to create a calming and sensoryrich atmosphere.
They are also renovating the playground at Starfish Academy. Updates include new equipment that follow a nature-inspired theme. A sensory garden has been introduced in Sarasota, where

children can engage with flower-shaped musical instruments that produce different tones when activated by a hanging wand. In addition, there are animal-shaped structures for climbing. Teachers can utilize the garden for walks, picnics, and much more.
“Coming out of COVID, we shifted our leadership infrastructure. We now have a site director at each location, and a Director of Early Childhood Education that trains, supports, and mentors the site directors, ensuring the quality is where we want it to be. We’ve also invested a huge amount into teacher training,” says Treharne.
“Parents can now log in to the online curriculum and learn what their child is learning in the classroom that week, and they can access activities that supplement the classroom work. It’s called a school-home-crossover curriculum,” she adds.
Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Community Support
Philanthropic dollars play a vital role in the continuation and enhancement of Starfish Academy. “This is a very expensive model,” Treharne admits. “It’s impossible to cover everything through tuition alone. To provide the quality that
86 SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2024
we want, we must raise money. That’s currently our biggest challenge at Starfish.”
Another way people can contribute is by spreading awareness about The Florida Center. “People don’t really know we’re here. We hired a VPK teacher last summer who said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve lived across the street for 20 years and I didn’t even know you guys were here.’ And she’s an early childhood educator! So, for me, as the director of the program, I’m thinking to myself, how many other people don’t know we’re here?”
Starfish Parent Testimonials
“This school has been such a blessing to me and my family. Our daughter is neurotypical and has benefitted in so many ways from having classmates with a variety of learning styles and engagement preferences. Kynslee recently recognized that a friend really enjoys books and that it helps him to feel better if he’s upset, so when she noticed he was crying, she grabbed his favorite book, ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear’ and brought it over to him. We are beyond thankful that, not only are the children learning developmental academics, but more importantly, life-skills, including empathy, kindness, inclusion, and unity,” says Melissa Cox. Her daughter, Kynslee has attended Starfish since she was 7 weeks old.

“The therapists at The Florida Center have helped my son Jackson be able to speak. He was mostly nonverbal when we started. They also have helped him with everyday tasks to make his life easier. I owe them everything for all they’ve done for us. My son loves it there and absolutely adores his teachers, and my daughter will be attending Starfish this year,” shares Sara Bosse, expressing her deep trust in Starfish Academy with both of her children.
“When Gracie was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, I didn’t have much knowledge on what to do or how to help her. Gracie was not doing so well with new environments and transitions. She was easily overstimulated and always getting frustrated when not being able to communicate what she wanted or needed. Gracie now loves going to school every morning. Her classmates/teacher/therapists became her biggest cheerleaders and celebrated her victories with us as a family. Without Starfish, I am not sure I would have known how best to navigate what she needed to thrive,” says Kristina Rich, reflecting on her family’s Starfish experience.
Starfish Academy’s approach to early childhood education aims to give every child the best chance at maximizing their full potential during the most foundational years of their life.

Dramatically lit sculptures, galactic paintings, and thousands of vibrant ribbons set against an orchestral composition escort you beyond Earth’s atmosphere in The Truth of the Night Sky: Anne Patterson and Patrick Harlin . Organized in collaboration with the Hermitage Artist Retreat, artist Anne Patterson and composer Patrick Harlin invite visitors to the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design on an immersive journey of wonderment, possibility, and unity through space inspired by the iconic 1968 photograph of Earth taken from Apollo 8.
Patterson, a multimedia artist, is a synesthete who visualizes color and shape when she hears music. Harlin, a composer, combines classical, jazz, and electronic traditions to create music that displays his respect for the great outdoors. When the two met and began collaborating in 2014 while in residence at the Hermitage Artist Retreat on Manasota Key, Florida, they discovered a shared affinity for drawing their inspiration from nature.
Transcending the traditional boundaries of art, The Truth of the Night Sky invites visitors to embark on a multisensory journey through the interplay of music, light, and visual arts. Patterson’s Weeping Tree, a majestic piece of driftwood weeping gold leaves, anchors the gallery with approximately 30 paintings of iridescent gold from We Are All Stardust forming a horizon beneath the tree. Celestial Orbs , sculptures made of steel piano wire, resin, and gold leaf, gently revolve in the gallery, symbolizing constellations in the night sky.

“Making these sculptures was pure joy for me. I manipulated and shaped the wire, actually dancing to the music and with my materials as my partner in rhythm to Patrick’s music,” Patterson said.
As visitors explore her works, excerpts and elaborations from Harlin’s orchestral composition Earthrise engage the auditory senses. Harlin recorded Earthrise in 2024 in Poland with the Beethoven Academy Orchestra specifically for The Truth of the Night Sky. “This is truly a global project, meant to connect each other through art and music,” said Harlin. The music has its origins in 2021 when Harlin applied to be among eight artists who would join Space X’s inaugural tourist flight around the moon. He imagined the trip would prompt him to compose a new soundtrack for space travel. When he wasn’t chosen he turned his attention to the Apollo 8 photograph. With the revered image from space in mind, he composed Earthrise, which coincidentally competed on Earth Day.
“There is a sense of awe in looking at the night sky, the vastness of the universe, and the improbability of reaching the moon, let alone our closest stars,” said Harlin. “To date, 24 humans have taken the 240,000mile trip and experienced the excitement of skyward travel accompanied by the violence of exiting Earth’s atmosphere and gravitational pull. I hope visitors to Sarasota Art Museum might vicariously experience the feeling that astronauts who have taken the trip beyond the moon have.”
On view from April 21–September 29, visitors can see Anne Patterson’s and Patrick Harlin’s exhibition in-person at The Truth of the Night Sky: Anne Patterson and Patrick Harlin at Sarasota Art Museum
