Henry digs rehab
Henry’s green thumb has been out of commission since his stroke last month. He misses sharing his prize-winning tomatoes with neighbors. So, when his occupational therapist brought him to Sarasota Memorial’s Mobility Garden, he perked right up. Tending the garden boxes helps improve his dexterity. Henry can’t wait to dig in his garden again. Neither can his neighbors. The Mobility Garden is a unique healing space where our rehabilitation patients can practice life skills in the real environment. It includes garden boxes, multi-surface walking areas, a putting green and more.

LATE NIGHT DINNER WITH WARHOL AT THE RUSSIAN TEA ROOM. Flying Pavarotti on a private jet to Las Vegas. Congratulating Dolly Parton backstage after her opening night performance. Post-show dinner with Sinatra in Atlantic City. Flying with Buddy Hackett on a private jet from LA to Vegas. Standing next to Ariel Sharon at a museum exhibition opening in Tel Aviv. Sitting in the back seat of a limo with Joe DiMaggio on the way to the Sugar Ray Leonard/Tommy Hearns fight. Meetings with Carl Lindner and Ronald Perelman. Leasing Michael Milken’s office penthouse in Beverly Hills. Meeting Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz, Sr.). Dare I say flying cross country with O.J. and Nicole Simpson. Having cocktails with Pia Zadora. Offices in the old Columbia Pictures building and in Trump Tower in New York, the Riviera Hotel in Vegas and the Drexel Burnham building in Beverly Hills. Enjoying a classical music concert at the home of the great-great-great-great (not sure how many greats) of the Marquis De Sade. Bidding on the Duchess of Windsor’s jewels in Geneva. Flying the Concord. Shopping at Martha on Park Avenue. Wearing Galanos, Lacroix and Kamali. Sipping soup ladled from Catherine the Great’s soup tureen. Having lunch in the board room while facing Claude Monet’s La Barque Rose. Taking the limo, to the Sikorsky, to the Gulfstream. I am not talking about the life of a corporate giant or a Hollywood celebrity, although, I certainly could be. These were just some of my incredible life experiences during my 20s and 30s. And I owe it all to one man taking a chance on me. A man who was brilliant, kind, understanding, patient and giving. His name was Meshulam Riklis (known to those close him as Rik). I served as his executive assistant for nearly 17 years. And no, that title didn’t mean I fetched him coffee, although I never would have thought twice about doing so. I was a facilitator, liaison, and spokesperson for one of the most dynamic and charismatic businessmen who ever lived. Known in the business world as the “father of the leveraged buy-out,” Rik was a Wall Street legend. He lived life to the fullest, was a fearless visionary, displayed calm and control under pressure, helped many achieve things that seemed untouchable in life, and helped me realize I could do and be anyone I wanted to be. He told me years later that he gave me the chance to work for him because he thought I was smart, possessed plenty of common sense, and was honest and loyal. I had also just lost my father, and as he was so accustomed to doing in his life, wanted to help someone who needed a boost. Despite my leaving in 1990 to move to Florida, I remained close with him throughout the years. The last time we talked was in 2006, a few years before he moved back to his homeland, Israel. He passed away on January 25 at the age of 95. A life well lived, a life full of love and giving, a life full of passion. He leaves behind so many people whose lives he so positively touched, who are better for knowing him, and who will always remember him with love and honor. I truly believe that if it wasn’t for him giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, I wouldn’t be publishing a magazine or have accomplished other successes. He helped shape my life like no other person, and for that,

and so much more, I am forever grateful to this great man. I am also thankful to have a platform such as this in which to publicly honor him and share my memories. It is fitting that this is the Design issue given that Rik also loved incredible design. He was a collector of fine art, and used some of the most talented designers of his day for the interiors of his New York townhome, his Malibu Beach home and his Beverly Hills mansion, the former Pickfair (the home of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford). When it came time for me to furnish my New York City apartment, he instilled in me that it was better to buy a few special pieces than a “bunch of junk.” Take your time, he used to say. Build your life. And whatever you do, don’t make it ungapatchka (a Yiddish word that means something ridiculously over decorated). Yes, fear of ungapatchka affected my personal design taste through today. I definitely under decorate. Monochromatic and simple for sure. So just what is new for 2019 home trends? We have some answers for you from some of our best local experts. We also gained access to one of the premier collections of rare 941.924.4481 www.B2END.com 4453 Ashton Road / Unit C / Sarasota, FL / 34233 WCAA & IDS MEMBERS and iconic Art Deco posters in the world, owned by Sarasota residents Bill and Elaine Crouse. To this day, they offer inspiration for graphic designers and are a true art form. Designing a good life is something that takes time, care, love and compassion. I love that my life was touched so greatly by someone who designed one of the best lives anyone could ever have. While the perks I enjoyed during my years of working with Rik were incredible, it was the principles and character of the man that has served as an incredible model of inspiration for me.

One of the most beautiful walking streets in all of Sarasota, Palm Avenue is known for its specialty shops, restaurants and art galleries. You won’t find any chain stores or chain restaurants. Everything is quite unique. But did you know that it also is home to several historic sites? As you stroll along the Avenue, you’ll find several historic gems along the way. Advertised in 1925 by its architect, Thomas Reed Martin, as “Floridian Architecture,” the now historic home located at 1213 N Palm Avenue was purchased L.D. Reagin, owner and editor of the Sarasota Times newspaper. The Reagin house “has a grand entrance pavilion with porches and casement windows that provides cross-ventilation.”

Barbara and Jay Lancer
+
THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SARASOTA COUNTY By Ryan G. Van Cleave | Photo by Nancy Guth For some, participation in sports is pure fun. For some, it’s a way of life. The latter is the case with Sarasota residents Barbara and Jay Lancer, who’ve used sports and celebrity athletes to engage with the community they love. As an expert fisherman, Jay takes underprivileged children out for fishing expeditions, and he’s offered similar top-level fishing experiences as auction prizes for charity fundraisers. Barbara uses one of her great loves—tennis— as a fundraising vehicle to help nonprofits, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. She’s served on their board for 10 years, and she’s been involved with them in some capacity for nearly two decades. “I was heavily involved in the Make-a-Wish Foundation for about ten years,” Barbara says. Then one day, some friends invited her to become involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. She loved it. “I quickly realized I could cast a wider net. 7,000 kids use the services in the six Clubs in our area. That’s impact.” While she still works with Make-a-Wish, she’s awed by the great work happening at the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota County. Jay’s a big fan, too, saying, “They do such a wonderful job for at-risk children.” That’s why the biggest beneficiary of Jay and Barbara’s philanthropic efforts is without a doubt the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota County. And sports play a big part in how that happens. Over the past seven years, the annual Joey Gratton Tennis Championship has raised more than $1 million to support career
readiness and vocational training programs. The event honors the late Joey Gratton—a champion motorcross and powerboat racer as well as a nationally-ranked tennis player. The 2018 tournament at the Longboat Key Club Tennis Gardens was co-chaired by Barbara and Christina Bonilla, the wife of World Series Champion Bobby Bonilla. Bill Sadlo, President/CEO at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, adds that “Barbara Lancer’s dedication to this event means that the youth we serve will have access to life-changing programs to help them achieve a great future.” But Barbara does more than just run a sports fundraising event. When she first got involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, she realized that the Lee Wetherington Club tennis courts were in sad shape—they had potholes! So Barbara went about getting the money to fix those. Then she brought in an IMG tennis pro to give lessons to the kids on those new courts. Before long, she started bringing in professional athletes to Clubs to help them learn about sports, health, and education. “I take these athletes there, and they get hooked. They keep coming back.” That list of pros includes celebrities such as Australian Open winner Petr Korda and Martina Navratilova, considered by many to be the world’s greatest female tennis player from 1975-2005. Barbara adds, “There’s also Jimmy Arias—at one point, he was ranked #5 in the world in tennis—who’s really done the most for us. We now give the Jimmy Arias Cup in his honor to a deserving athlete in our community.” MARCH 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

Why are Jay and Barbara so committed to giving? “Both of us came from nothing,” Barbara says. “We worked ourselves through college and into successful careers.” The first in her family to ever go to college, she knows what effect education and support can have on someone’s future. Jay, too, has understood the value of helping others from a young age. His father—a self-made man who ran a downtown Sarasota music store—was asked by people from a newlybuilt Newtown church for help finding a great deal on an organ. Barbara adds that “he went out of his way to not only find one, but purchase it for them and have it delivered. That’s the type of man he was.” And though Jay’s father passed away 25 years back, that same church recently honored him for that early generosity that helped put them on the path to success. Jay adds, “We’ve been so blessed in life that we knew we had to give back.”
There’s no limit to the BARGAI
One of the biggest lessons Barbara learned happened when she moved her pharmacy career to part time so she and Jay could travel. That gave her a lot of extra time, so she sought out opportunities to help with a friend who worked with a nonprofit. That friend essentially said, “Hey, you and your husband are doing well, so we really just need you to write a check.” “I learned a big lesson from that,” says Barbara. “Some people have time, some have money, and some have both. It’s a group effort.” And she feels this level of understanding helps make her successful in her charity endeavors. “I’m open to any way that someone wants to help. And if it’s money, a $10 gift can be extremely meaningful.” Whether it’s an old Tony Robbins quote or not, Barbara says that “the best thing about living is giving.” And the young people who frequent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County are always so grateful. “You do a little thing, and the way they respond, you’d think it’s so much more,” Barbara says. “It’s an amazing experience to be part of all this.”

of Generosity By Sylvia Whitman | Photo by Nancy Guth
Grateful patients often leave flowers or chocolates at the nurses’ station, but philanthropist Gloria Flanzer had the means to think big. In the early 2000s, she asked her personal physician, Dr. Raymond Dean Hautamaki, what she could do for Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) to make a meaningful impact on direct patient care. Then co-medical director of critical care at SMH, Hautamaki offered some suggestions, and Flanzer donated nearly $1 million for new hardware in the ICU, from advanced dialysis equipment to thermo-cooling machines that lower brain temperatures in comatose cardiac-arrest patients for 24 hours and improve neurological outcomes.
Scarsdale, NY, and Longboat Key. In 2005, they created the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Philanthropic Trust, now one of the largest private donors in Florida.
A year later, SMH hosted a survivors’ day. “Gloria was able to meet over 100 individuals who were saved by her equipment and walked out of the hospital,” Hautamaki recalls. “It came full circle for her that she really had the ability to have an impact on people.”
“My long-term knowledge of the hospital and its needs, and Eric’s understanding of the foundation and the management of its assets—we work well together,” Hautamaki says.
Née Milstein, Gloria benefitted from her family’s successful New York business. Her father, a Russian immigrant, laid floors at Rockefeller Center, Madison Square Garden, and the city’s airports, and Gloria’s brothers branched out into property development. Lou Flanzer, Gloria’s husband, also invested in real estate. The couple split their time between homes in 60
SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2019
Hautamaki cared for the Flanzers through Lou’s death in 2013 and Gloria’s in 2015. “I knew Gloria and Lou for two decades—just wonderful human beings,” he says. The favorable assessment was mutual. Because local health care ranked high in Gloria Flanzer’s priorities, Hautamaki now serves as co-trustee of the Flanzer’s philanthropy, alongside longtime Milstein family attorney and CPA Eric Kaplan.
Hautamaki’s connections to Sarasota Memorial Hospital run deep and long—all the way back to the delivery room, where he and his sister were born. As a student at Riverview High School and later UF, he spent summers drawing blood as a hospital phlebotomist. After training as an internist and pulmonary care specialist in Gainesville and St. Louis, he returned to Sarasota in 1996. Over the years, he’s held a spectrum of leadership positions at SMH.
philanthropy
“Gloria knew the landscape here. She knew I had a strong working relationship with the hospital. She also knew I was going to be in Sarasota forever,” Hautamaki says. Dean and his wife, Lizzie, a parenting educator, will soon send the youngest of their four children to college, but their folks still live in town. And the Hautamakis’ “Old Florida” retirement dream lies just down the road, a small ranch near Myakka City big enough for their four dogs, two cats, and Lizzie’s organic garden. (Hence the doctor’s cowboy boots.) “I’m not going anywhere,” Hautamaki says. As a private physician, Hautamaki helps paying and pro-bono patients navigate complex health care—lung transplants, cancer, advanced cardiac lung issues, stints in the ICU. “I’m usually in the hospital three to four hours every day,” he says—and longer during emergencies or on call. He and his partners hold office hours every day, make morning and evening rounds at SMH, and visit patients in their private homes as well as in skilled nursing and rehab facilities. Now, on top of the “day job,” trustee Hautamaki spends about 15 hours a week on philanthropy-related email, phone calls, and meetings. “I shouldn’t say it’s my hobby; it’s my passion.”
Although still chief of internal medicine, Dr. Hautamaki has resigned from SMH’s medical executive committee—a transparency move. However, his partner, Todd Ken Horiuchi, has taken on that role, and Hautamaki’s long friendships and working relationships allow him to collaborate to determine the region’s most pressing medical needs. “Memorial is a safety net hospital,” serving not only Sarasota but Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties with its Level II trauma center, Hautamaki explains. “We’re probably going to do 3,000 major traumas this year.” Third- and fourth-year FSU medical students rotate through the hospital, which has a three-year internal medicine residency program and is about to launch another residency in emergency medicine. In the works are a regional cancer center and a building with simulation labs, classroom s for graduate medical education, and an auditorium. Hautamaki, also an FSU clinical associate professor of internal medicine, says with a bit of understatement, “There’s a lot going on.” To date, trustee Hautamaki has collaborated with SMH colleagues on funding requests. “We’ve developed a list of what is needed to keep this hospital a top hospital. love to have,” he says. The Flanzer Trust undertakes a cost analysis, then gives the money to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Foundation, which makes grants directly to departments. Last year alone, the trust provided about $750,000 for ICU and $500,000 for cardiac-care equipment upgrades. Another $800,000 will help launch the new ER residency program. “And we will most likely be instrumental in the building of the medical education building,” Hautamaki says. But first, the trust honored one of Gloria’s main wishes—“to endow the department of cardiology at Columbia University.” That $35 million donation, the trust’s first major gift, opens the way for funding larger projects on the Gulf Coast, says Hautamaki. The trust is also developing a website to allow Gulf Coast nonprofits to make requests. Hautamaki points out that the Flanzers already have made substantial contributions to “long-term organizations that truly touch people in need,” such as Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS), which has a Gloria & Louis Flanzer Campus.

BILL AND ELAINE CROUSES’ INCREDIBLE ART DECO POSTER COLLECTION BY LAUREN ANTOINE Visitors flock to Siesta Key for white sand, gulf breezes, and—thanks to Bill and Elaine Crouse— time travel. The Crouses own one of the most important collections of Art Deco posters in the world. Art Deco, also called style modern, was a movement in Europe during the 1920s that then made its way to the United States. Art Deco took its name from the “Exposition Internationale des Art Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” held in Paris in 1925. With geometric shapes and streamlines, it embraced modernity and the promise of the Industrial Revolution.

Bill and Elaine’s joy is collecting, displaying, appreciating, and sharing the history and provenance behind posters, sculptures, cocktail shakers, and other artifacts created between 1919 and 1939. The couple owns thousands of Art Deco posters, most of which they have carefully catalogued and stored. As Bill puts it, “This is a museum collection. It just happens to be in our home.” Other museums acknowledge that. The Guggenheim, the Victoria and Albert, and a host of U.S. and international

galleries knock on the Crouses’ door whenever they’re mounting an Art Deco exhibit. At any one moment, a number of artifacts will be on loan. In the heyday of building the collection, Bill bought about a hundred posters a year, but in the last five years, he’s acquired less than a dozen. “It would be impossible to duplicate even a small part of this collection today because the posters are no longer available on the market,” says Elaine. “They’re all in museums or in other collectors’ hands.” “When you go to an auction, you don’t win unless you’re the highest bidder. You don’t like it when the object goes for 10 times what the high estimate is,” Bill says with a laugh. Roughly half of the Crouses’ poster collection was created by extremely influential poster artists A.M Cassandre, Jean Carlu, Paul Colin and Charles Loupot. Cassandre, for example, was a well-known French painter, commercial poster artist, and typeface designer. Cassandre created a poster for a furniture store, Au Bucheron, that won first prize at the 1925 Exposition. Some of Cassandre’s best works—Grand-Sport, L’Intransigeant, Dubonnet, and Triplex—are hung proudly in different parts of Bill and Elaine’s home.

These and other Art Deco posters have been preserved for almost 80 to 100 years since their printing. “It’s an art form that never should have survived,” says Elaine. “It was done on very inexpensive paper. It was displayed on the side of a wall or a kiosk to be ripped down in a month or two.” “Or destroyed by the elements,” adds Bill. Yet the posters form only a part of the couple’s collection from that expressive time period. Bill has given Elaine broaches created by J.D. Rockefeller’s personal jeweler, Raymond Yard. Fifteen years ago, she presented him at Christmas a Zeppelin-shaped Art Deco martini shaker. From that one piece has grown an exquisite collection of martini shakers, many crafted during Prohibition, and barware that they still use to entertain at dinner parties. Their treasures include “the Holy Grail” of figural cocktail shakers, a model of the first lighthouse in the United States, built in 1716 on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor. Bill and Elaine had been fans of Art Deco even before meeting and marrying. Elaine, who had a career in corporate communications, collected furniture and textiles because of the period’s sustainable and clean design. Bill, a healthcare venture capitalist and pharmaceutical executive, took up collecting to “broaden” himself beyond business. He owned a small collection of Cubist art but turned to Art Deco posters because of its greater potential. “I was looking to build the best collection on Earth. I wasn’t interested in collecting unless it was at the very highest level,” he says. 70
SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2019
Both Crouses enjoy the thrill of the hunt in collecting. But longerterm satisfaction comes from living alongside splendid artifacts and understanding the history behind the Art Deco shapes and lines. Images of trains, planes, ships, cars, dance, Dubonnet—Bill can’t pick a single favorite. “What’s so great about Art Deco posters is that even though they were made so long ago, it feels like they could have been made today,” he says. The heart of the collection, which started in Manhattan, moved with the couple to Sarasota. Another part resides in Elaine’s hometown of Pittsburgh. Florida had been far from their first choice for relocation, but Elaine says the natural beauty of Sarasota sold them on the Gulf Coast. “We also knew the arts were very strong in Sarasota,” she says, “and we were hoping to find persons of like mind. It has turned out to be that way.” They landed on Casey Key in 2004. After much searching, they bought their current home on Siesta Key. The one-of-a-kind Guy Peterson house was a perfect fit; however, in order to best showcase their collections, they completely remodeled the interior, exterior, and even the landscaping. The Crouses welcome others into their private museum. They host fundraisers and invite visits from the arts and education communities. Christopher Wilson, an instructor at Ringling College of Art and Design, teaches a class in Art Deco and regularly brings students to tour the Crouses’ home. After a first-hand experience of Art Deco posters, students create their own version. Bill and Elaine judge how

closely these posters capture the aesthetic of the ones made during that period. With the collection nearing its peak, Bill and Elaine are minding its legacy. Bill has committed much of his knowledge about the creation and provenance of the posters to two books: The Art Deco Posters and Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco Posters, The Complete Collection: The Art, The Artists and the Competition, 1929-2009. The Crouses have also set up a foundation. Although museums would love to have the posters and other art (along with an endowment), keeping the Art Deco collection private allows more flexibility and public access. The Crouses have no desire for their beloved artifacts to spend years in a vault. “We want to make the art available to any place that wants to exhibit it,” says Bill. Writer Lauren Antoine is one of the awestruck Ringling College students who visited the Crouses on Christopher Wilson’s class field trip.

DESIGN TRENDS By Jacqueline Miller
Tired of your kitchen, living room, fixtures or appliances? You’re not the only one. Perhaps it’s time for a refresh. To find out what looks are trending, we spoke with local experts to discuss what’s hot and what’s not.

Kitchen & Bath Fixtures For the latest kitchen and bath products and trends, the best source is The Plumbing Place (5678 Fruitville Rd. | theplumbingplace.com). Its interactive 6,000 square foot designer showroom carries the finest selection of kitchen and bath fixtures, fittings and hardware in our area. Their designers create beautiful and practical kitchens and baths.
John Smithman, Owner “Touch and hands-free faucets are still very popular for 2019. Oversized kitchen sinks are hot and there’s also more variety in colors and materials for both kitchen and bath. Good examples are composite granite kitchen sinks in colors to coordinate with any countertop and appliance color scheme. The trends in faucet finishes include satin gold, warm brass and matte black. For improved functionality, there are special sprays for rinsing dishes, and settings that give you pre-set right water volume on demand. In the bathroom, advancements in toilets are improving performance and bidet features include anti-bacterial germ fighting capabilities. Free-standing tubs remain very popular, so manufacturers are offering tubs that appear to be freestanding, but can be installed against a back wall to save space while preserving the look of a freestanding tub. Wellness is also huge for today’s bathrooms. The warm air bath with microbubbles activates the lymphatic system while billions of oxygenrich microbubbles release energy, stimulate and detoxify your skin, and relax the body and mind. These are only a few of the exciting product trends. You can see many other beautiful designs in our showroom.”

Wall Coverings According to top designers Stan Writesel and Alan Gravley at Beginning to End Interiors (941.924.4481 | b2end.com), wallpaper with interesting patterns and textures bring the pop that you want and provide a sense of cohesiveness to the best designed rooms. Stan Writesel and Alan Gravley: “Some of the hottest looks we are recommending include Soho Hemp, a paper of hand-woven hemp that weaves two to three hues together for a variegated effect. The ground is then sliced into strips to create a sharp chevron pattern. It’s available in eight colorations. We also like Fuji Weave. This paper is dyed prior to weaving by artisans then it is expertly
laminated for a virtually seamless effect. It’s inspired by the beauty of handwoven baskets nestled at the basin of Mt. Fuji and is available in 14 new colors from deep blues to misty greys for a crisp, natural texture for the walls. Fretwork makes quite the statement. It’s available in eight colorations and was inspired by Pagoda archways of a Zen Garden. It has an intricate wood pattern with a unique ornamental design. Authentic wood veneer is given a color wash, dye-cut and hand laid by artisans into a geometric pattern atop a silver or gold ground creating a glamorous 3-dimensional effect. We love working with these and other incredible wall coverings and helping our clients create perfectly cohesive interiors.” MARCH 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

Custom Organization
Who doesn’t love a well-planned organized closet, garage, or cabinet? A perfect custom solution that totally suits your needs gives you an uncluttered and more efficient life – less stress for sure! When it comes to custom organization, we asked the professional designers at California Closets (941.366.1315 | californiaclosets.com/locations/sarasota) what’s trending in custom organization. Lora Van Balen, Marketing Manager: “One trend that will continue in 2019 is contrasting light and dark finishes, which really gives a space dimension. The shadow boxes in this entertainment center are simplistic, yet catch the eyes to create a well-balanced focal point. Our designers really enjoy collaborating with their clients on creative design aspects such as this. Getting the right lighting is also another trend we anticipate seeing this year. Optimally designed lighting in your space can change everything.
80
SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2019
When our designers collaborate with their clients they find excitement through highlighting sentimental and personal possessions. Puck lights in a custom storage solution can illuminate handbags, shoes or even highlight unique pieces of artwork as seen here in this well-styled living room. Last June, California Closets incorporated a gold hardware line into our wide range of products. It has been a huge hit with our designers and clients alike. This particular gold finish used in the laundry room bridges traditional to contemporary styles which makes even the smallest space more elegant.”
Modern beach-style living is really not a 2019 trend, but it’s always the perfect vibe for our year-round beach town. Classy yet comfortable, stunning modern beach interiors are easily achieved with the help of one of the expert designers at Robb & Stucky (941.702.8400 | robbstucky.com). Robin Azevedo, Interior Designer: “Our clients are loving the Modern Beach House trend – washed creamy grey coastal furnishings
with subtle finishes coupled with bright pops of bold contemporary fabrics. Unexpected and fresh! The living room in this photo is a great example. A Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams deepseated Franco sectional with extraordinary sinkin comfort in a calming neutral cover is paired with the pale pink elder chairs, and accented with the strong, bright, vibrant and unexpected pillows. It’s a Coastal twist, turning the corner toward a modern beach chic living style. This style is so enjoyable and will work for many years to come.”

Hardwood Furniture
Furniture that endures for generations is always trending and you can be sure it is always made of solid hardwood. And when it comes to beautiful made-to-order hardwood furniture made in the USA, there’s no better source than Miller’s Dutch Haus Furniture (941.952.5646 and 941.960.2942 | dutchhausfurniture.com). Abby Schlabach, Marketing Director: “Clean, straight lines and elegant, simple designs are always trending as are the popular mid-century modern style-furnishings popularized in the 1950s. It is simple and timeless, defined by organic influences and high functionality. Also becoming more and more popular are traditional woods stained in modern colors; example: cherry wood with a medium brown stain instead of a traditional red color. Dining tables become ‘edgy’ with live edge tops and look great paired with metal bases. They are modern yet rustic at the same time. We’ve also seen big demand for walnut wood, natural finishes, and warm, medium brown tones.”

There’s nothing more important than having a wow kitchen. It is the heart of the home, and next to your bedroom, it’s probably the most important room in your house. To find out what’s trending, we talked to Dan Patton at PDR Kitchen & Bath (941.357.2236 | pdrfl.com).
Kitchen Design
Dan Patton: “Sleek lines with whites, greys and blacks are still very popular. New is that we’re seeing refreshing bursts of color and 2019 seems to be the year of the “color splash.” The splash can be in wall paint accents or tile. Also very popular are navy blue and black cabinetry accented by champagne or gold hardware creating a wow factor. Coastal farmhouse with its warmth, comfort and serenity also continues to be very popular.”

If you’re looking to shop for lighting, furniture and accessories all in one location, the best local source is Lyteworks (941.745.2900 | lyteworks.com). With constantly changing inventory, they have the latest home trends throughout the expansive showroom. Owner and Interior Design Society member JoJo Bradshaw shared two interiors perfect for our beach town and the trend toward sleek, minimalist design. JoJo Bradshaw: “This sleek round table (right) comes in navy or black, colors that work so well with today’s modern designs. Soft grey leather chairs with nail heads a light wood from 4-Hands complement the dark table. The beautiful yet beachy Cyan chandelier is the perfect lighting accent, and when you add a beautiful piece of art, especially one that incorporates water, you now have the perfect coastal beach look. The office features 4-Hands Southcrest desk and chair, and rather than use a cabinet to store things we don’t need, we removed the traditional option and used open, airy shelving and added books, accessories and a painting. The black ceiling and animal print accent rug complete this trending look.” 84

Coastal Interiors
Timeless Pieces Incorporating unique furnishings that work in both classic or contemporary homes and selecting the perfect paint color, window treatments, rugs and accent pieces are most easily achieved when working with an experienced interior designer. Barbara Vanderkolk Gardner, President of Collins Interiors (941.383.0131 | colllinsinteriordesign.com), shares a recent design featured at the Jewels on the Bay Designer Showhouse in which she did just that. Barbara Vanderkolk Gardner, IDS, IIDA, IFDA: “We used this gorgeous and elegant Caracole credenza in the living room of the Jewels on the Bay Designer Showhouse because brass is back in a big way. The credenza has two agate printed acrylic doors, a brushed gold finished top and brushed gold conical legs. The lovely buffet lamps from Circa Lighting, while typically used in traditional settings, create a modern vibe when paired with the credenza. It’s a sharp look with nice storage inside that works well in a classic or contemporary home. Look at how well the contemporary curtains, sofa and geometric cocktail table work with the traditional fireplace screen and mirror over the mantle. Adding to the wow factor in this room is the rich Gabbeh silky wool rug — a contemporary take on an ancient Persian tribal rug from International Design Source in Sarasota.”

Kitchen Appliances
The 2019 kitchen appliance trends offer new ways to keep your home smart and provide ways to simplify kitchen tasks. To see the latest kitchen appliance trends, Mullet’s Appliances Showroom (941.921.5531 | mullets.com) showcases the latest offerings from the top brands. Scott Mullet: “There’s no doubt that topping the 2019 trend list for kitchen appliances is the rise of steam ovens. Steam is a versatile form of heat that both powers and sanitizes. It provides a healthy method of cooking that saves time, retains the vitamins, minerals and nutrients in food, preserves the color, texture and flavor and keeps food moist. Wolf’s Convection Steam oven has a unique digital technology that senses the amount and size of the food being prepared and automatically adjusts all the details of cooking to achieve results never before accomplished at home. The top appliance brands are partnering with a growing number of home automation service providers allowing you to monitor, manage and control your appliances from any room in your home, or even outside your home.” 86

Rug Rage When you have Rugs as Art, the number one rug store in the entire USA* located right here in Sarasota with over 4,000 rugs in stock, 20,000 square feet of showroom, customized sizing and the best prices anywhere, why look anywhere else? (941.921.1900 | rugsasart.com) Owner John Murse shares what’s trending and what’s always in vogue. * Voted best rug store in America by AmericasMart and the Oriental Rug Importers Association)
John Murse: “Area rugs continue to be a key component of interior design and designers are always looking to be inventive and create new looks. We are collaborating with a small weaving family in India to produce rugs unlike those seen in the current marketplace – old world meets new. These works of art are hand knotted of 100% wool and take nontraditional and trending fresh colors and place them in old world traditional patterns. In the rug featured at the top, three different rug patterns were combined into one modern yet traditional design. The rug to the bright is based on an antique design that has been updated with custom colorations. The more traditional burgundy, navy and hunter green colors are replaced with coral, chartreuse, blues and pinks to create rich rug designs that are perfect for Florida homes.” MARCH 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

There’s a new trend in wall art that is becoming a fast favorite of the top interior designers. To learn more about this trend, we reached out to Asli Gunsel, owner of 301 Granite & Marble (3800 N Washington Blvd. | 941.360.0301), who has imported and installed several of these impressive works of art.

Asli Grunsel:

“There’s a new frontier in art for the interior design world. Unique, decorative art panels by Italian designer Alex Turco are a perfectly balanced mix of photography and multimedia graphics. These panels are being used in homes and businesses in place of traditional art pieces. Made of epoxy resin, the panels are all incredible works of art. They can also be custom designed.
SARASOTA SCENE | MARCH 2019
Designers are using them to create dramatic living, dining and bedroom walls and ceilings. The panels are also perfect artistic replacements for traditional kitchen backsplashes. They are also UV resistant and waterproof so they can be used to create dynamic backdrops behind bath tubs and outdoor garden and pool areas. Commercially they are in high demand as well. Using a Turco panel in a trendy boutique or salon gives it a look that sets the shop apart from the rest. Corporations are using them to make dramatic lobby entrances and boardroom walls. Discriminating yacht owners are also choosing panels featuring wonders of the sea.”

Jewels of the Imagi By Ryan G. Van Cleave
My grandmother had a flowered globe Tiffany lamp hanging in the living room of her Iowa farmhouse. Every time we visited, I stood on a chair and ran my fingers across the colored glass that always gleamed like jewels in the afternoon sunlight. To me, the word “Tiffany” meant beauty, wonder, and exquisite elegance. (Imagine my surprise, years later, to learn that Tiffany and Co. made jewelry as well!) Indeed, jewelry is the focus of this month’s article. Here’s why. Only four designers have ever been allowed to sign their work for Tiffany and Co., and the most famous of these is French designer Jean Schlumberger, whose jewelry was a Must-Have for every highfashion, jet-setting woman in the 1960s and 70s. If you want to see the brightly-colored wonders that made Schlumberger the epitome of midcentury elegance, you’re in luck.

This glittery exhibition brings together the vast Schlumberger collection of Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon, which was donated to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts between 1985 and 2015. From Dec 15, 2018 to March 31, 2019, visitors will be able to see jewelry, cigarette cases, salt cellars, and so much more. To be clear, this is the most complete and comprehensive collection of Schlumberger’s work in the world. If you want to know why style icons such as Diana Vreeland, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jacqueline Kennedy sported Schlumberger jewelry on their necks, wrists, and lapels, you’ll just have to come and see the lively experimental designs and dazzling styling for yourself. He made the necklace Audrey Hepburn wore in the promotion of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Mellon was Schlumberger’s most supportive patron and a close, close friend. So close, in fact, that Schlumberger used Mellon’s love for the natural world as the inspiration for many pieces. That resulted in pieces such as the Breath of Spring necklace (1966)—which has multishaded sapphires set

among diamond-encrusted 18-karat gold spikes—and a pair of butterfly bracelets made of amethysts, sapphires, turquoise, peridot, yellow diamonds, and many other colored stones. Most impressive is how small hidden springs allow the butterflies to appear to flutter as the wearer moves. A well-reported quote by Schlumberger that appeared in many of his obituaries explains his vision for nature-themed work: “I try to make everything look as if it were growing, uneven, at random, organic, in motion.” The MFA paired this exhibition with one of their own making, “Drawn to Beauty: The Art and Atelier of Jean Schlumberger,” which explores his process as artist and designer while giving a strong sense of his relationship with his world-famous clientele. MFA Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Stanton Thomas, explains that part of Schlumberger’s genius is how he brought a much different vision of color to his designs. While everyone else was focused on classic combinations—typically yellow gold and white diamonds—along came Schlumberger who shocked the world with his use of rubies, amethysts, and sapphires, pairing reds and blues and exploring the power of contrast.

“Once Tiffany hired him in 1956, he had access to the finest materials, the largest and brightest stones,” Thomas says. “But one of the biggest surprises we found when assembling ‘Drawn to Beauty’ was in his early work from the 1930s. While it was made out of relatively inexpensive materials, we were shocked at the design. They were just as innovative and impressive as his later Tiffany work.” Another thing that Schlumberger’s sketches reveal is that while he was never formally trained in art or design, he demonstrated a striking technical precision in all of his work. One other thing to note — “Drawn to Beauty” features pieces on loan from personal lenders as well as the Tiffany and Co. archive. Some of these were worn by the jet-set crowd, and some are never-before-seen pieces. For many, the chance to view these rare pieces holds as much appeal as the Mellon collection. Taken together, “Jewels of the Imagination” and “Drawn to Beauty” combine into one enormous once-in-a-lifetime presentation that reveals why Schlumberger was a master whose whimsical sense of color, design, and movement make him a permanent fixture in the history of 20th century jewelry design. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Tiffany item up close, so I’ll be in St. Petersburg again soon to remind myself why they deserve the reputation they’ve rightly enjoyed for decades. And don’t worry, MFA employees who might be worried that I’ll run my fingers across the Schlumberger pieces, I won’t! Probably not, anyway. BALTIMORE ORIOLES BUILD A YEAR-ROUND NEST IN SARASOTA by Gus Mollasis
A ball, A glove. Two people who care about each other. A father. A son. A daughter. A couple of friends. We each have our own cherished memory of a game of catch. Tossing a baseball to each other. That’s how it usually starts. This love affair with the game. That’s passed on as time goes by.

on the town
More than any other sport, baseball is passed on from generation to generation.
“Do you ever take this for granted?” I asked the man who is fact from Baltimore, and who as a kid was an Orioles fan.
Memories build that special bond between parents and their children, and grandparents and grandchildren.
Smiling widely he said, “No I never get tired of this. I never take it for granted. Isn’t it beautiful?”
Children of yesteryear listening to the game with the radio tucked under their pillow. Listening to a spring training broadcast from sunny Florida as you stare at your car covered with four inches of snow in your driveway up North. Catching a game on the tube with friends and family as your team finally clinches the pennant. Going to the ballpark as a family, counting the moments before you eat your first hot dog at the park.
“This has to be your dream job,” I asked – me, the guy from Detroit who grew up worshipping another kid from Baltimore, the great Detroit Tiger Al Kaline.
It is a rite of passage that feels so darn right. This passing of the torch of our national pastime to people we care about. Nostalgic. Heartfelt. And always thoughts of home. Baseball has always been about home, and baseball has always been about family. Maybe that’s why baseball has a home plate.
Rovine shares that the building is 200,000 square feet on a 36-acre campus, including five baseball fields and a baseball operations center. The players practice on the back fields and one is a synthetic field. The minor leaguers practice at Twin Lakes, which Orioles Sarasota also runs.
Those were the thoughts that danced through my mind as I stared at the pristine home plate on our “Field of Dreams” – Ed Smith Stadium, spring training home to the Baltimore Orioles.
My generous tour continues around the ballpark and includes a stop into a luxury suite adorned with significant Orioles memorabilia and historic moments captured in photographs. The view is stunning. To me, there are few things in life that are as beautiful as a wellcared-for baseball field. And this field is immaculate. I stare at it again. Lost in its splendor. Its majesty.
Standing next to me as I got lost in my thoughts looking out at the luscious green of the field was Vice President of OriolesSarasota, David Rovine. 1 06

over the years.” Rovine smiles and finishes the rest of the list.
I smile like a kid who was just promised World Series tickets.
They are magical numbers. Revered numbers. Numbers that represent history, and the Orioles family. But they are only part of the story here in Sarasota.
No tour would be complete without viewing the acknowledgments of the retired Oriole numbers that adorn a special place behind home plate next to Jackie Robinson’s revered number 42, which is retired and hangs in every Major League ballpark. These hallowed numbers represent the rich history of the Baltimore Orioles family throughout the years – 20, 5, 4, 22, 33 and 8. Together we rattle off the Hall of Fame names starting with Frank Robinson’s number 20 representing the powerful Oriole slugger who recently passed away. “The great Frank Robinson. Still the only player to win the MVP in both leagues,” says Rovine. “He was something else. He and Brooks (Robinson; #5), the two Robinsons, wrecked many days for my dad and me
“Number 4 is Earl Weaver, number 22 is Jim Palmer, number 33 is Eddie Murray, and of course number 8 is Cal Ripken.”
The numbers David Rovine wants to turn to now represent the future. There were other major league teams that have called Sarasota home. The Chicago White Sox was one of these teams, and they were here when Michael Jordan made his attempt to play in the Majors. A media circus followed the superstar basketball player’s pursuit of his baseball dreams. The Cincinnati Reds played here from 1998-2009. The Baltimore Orioles are in their second stint here, having first played spring training games in 1991. Now, they are dedicated to making Sarasota home, not only as their winter and spring training nest, but most importantly, as a place that serves the community year-round. “This is our tenth year of Major League Baseball in Sarasota and this season we will welcome our one millionth fan to Ed Smith Stadium,” Rovine shares with great pride.
On that special day, the Baltimore Orioles will select a fan at random to receive a $5,000 shopping experience at Diamond Vault, two Spring Training season tickets for five years, as well as many other goodies. With the first-class renovation complete, and a solid commitment that will assure that Sarasota will be home to the Orioles for at least another 19 years, our conversation turns to the Orioles’ place in our community. “We are committed to Sarasota and to supporting our community all year long,” Rovine states. “People have accepted the Orioles and I’m proud of that. Other teams played here and we asked ourselves what was going to make us part of the community. I think it is being a good business partner as well as a good neighbor, and you become a good neighbor by giving back to the community in your support of nonprofits and charities. The fact that we partner with the Sarasota Orchestra to do a performance, as well as the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe, is proof of our commitment. And we also do a lot of free family-friendly activities that include Spring Fest.” Rovine shared that the goal from day one was to have the Baltimore Orioles become synonymous with Sarasota. It is very much a desire of ownership to keep this a year-round operation. Many spring training clubs tend to leave at the end of spring training and

on the town they let the county or municipality manage the facility. Not here. There is Oriole staff here year-round driving all the activities occurring throughout the year. These activities include the Gulf Coast League and Instructional League Baseball that are free to the public. Emphasizing their presence in Sarasota County goes well beyond baseball and Spring Training. Rovine points out a commitment that includes year-round philanthropic “OriolesREACH” initiatives that embrace youth activities, charitable causes and civic priorities. During a typical spring training game, the Orioles honor members of the extended Orioles community who have distinguished themselves by selflessly working or volunteering in fields that care for, serve, teach, protect, and improve the lives of others. But it is outside the base paths and into the schools where the Orioles go to reach the children and provide important mentoring to middle schoolers in Sarasota County. To talk about how the Orioles impact kids and healthy lifestyles, Jennifer Grondahl, the Orioles Sarasota Director of Corporate and Community Partnerships, joins in the conversation. “Our partnership with Sarasota County Schools teaches students about the importance of physical fitness, healthy eating, and tobacco-free living,” says Grondahl. The Orioles Health and Fitness Challenge is a five-week program that exposes more than 4,500 students in grades six through eight to join in a variety of health and fitness activities led by Sarasota County Physical Education teachers. “The Challenge focuses and emphasizes healthy tobacco-free living that includes better nutrition. We’re really proud of this program, which is part of the school curriculum, that helps children make the proper food choice, such as choosing an apple over chips.” Each participating student is eligible for two free tickets to the Orioles Spring Training game and receives a voucher for $20 in food and beverage from the Orioles Healthy Fit Grill.

“To be able to bring kids and teach them that even in a ballpark setting you can make healthy choices like grilled chicken sandwiches, yogurt and a salad is rewarding. Our philosophy is to eat, live and train like the pros,” says Grondahl. But don’t worry, there are still hot dogs. “When Sarasota Orchestra was here for a concert, we fretted what to serve these folks. Wine and Cheese? No. They all wanted hot dogs,” Rovine adds with a grin. Just as their many healthy choices of things to eat and drink at the ballpark, there are just as many things to do at the ballpark all throughout the year. Other noteworthy events include “Arts in the Ballpark,” a variety of family-friendly arts and entertainment events for the public at Ed Smith Stadium, and “Athletes & Artists Play for Kids,” a weekend of song and sport to support arts education and girls’ empowerment. The weekend features the fourth annual “Nashville’s Music Row Comes to the Ballpark” charity benefit, two Orioles home games, artist workshops and health and wellness sessions for local youth, and an onfield performance from Country music rising superstar and 11-time number one singer/songwriter, Cole Swindell. The benefit is Saturday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m. Since its inception, “Nashville Comes to the Ballpark” has raised more than $250,000 for Nashville and Sarasota Charities including Music Health Alliance, Girls Inc., Library Foundation of Sarasota County, Sarasota Academy of the Arts and the YMCA Foundation of Sarasota. These are just some of the many examples of how the Baltimore Orioles family is committed to helping Sarasota families and organizations. “We’re extremely proud that we are a year-round organization,” Grondahl shared. “People know us for spring training, but we’re doing things all summer long. Once the ballplayers are up in Baltimore, we have clinics with hundreds and hundreds of children with our major league players who are in rehab or minor leaguers teaching them the fundamentals of baseball.” MARCH 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

“We bring the kids here and they get a tee-shirt and hat and they spilt up in groups on the back fields. Our players are teaching them how to hit, throw, catch and run the bases. And of course the Oriole Bird mascot is out there. It’s really cool.” Grondahl says that the Orioles hope to be here and call Sarasota home forever. Everyone that works there is from the Sarasota area. To Grondahl, that demonstrates the organization’s commitment to the community. “We all want to be here and we love the Orioles and we love Sarasota.” Owner John Angelos comes to Sarasota regularly and was integral to the Orioles moving to Sarasota from Fort Lauderdale. “You can see him around Sarasota having dinner and interacting with the community,” says Rovine. For Rovine, his personal feelings about baseball are the same as so many have expressed to him. “As a Baltimore kid, I watched them growing up. One of the things that baseball is, is a family experience. Almost everybody that loves baseball was taken by a parent or grandparent. There’s this communal feeling when you’re sitting there.” “When my brother and I would get into battles growing up, my mother would say, David, you go to the ballpark with your father so you can work this out. There is something about looking at the grass, just like you talked about, that gives you a peaceful feeling and allows you to relax and put things in perspective. To come to this stage of my career after having traveled all around and to work for my boyhood baseball team is really a dream come true.” Rovine finds the opportunity to partner with groups in the community unique given the iconic Baltimore Orioles brand. “We have stars in the clubhouse who want to go out on those fields. When I see them interact with these kids, not only are they introducing something that is simple, nice and wholesome such as baseball to these kids, but they are also reinvigorating the love that they have for the game.”

Orioles Youth Clinic 2018 For Grondahl, who has experienced her share of special moments with local kids and the players, she has a favorite moment. “We had kids from Oak Park school here for our health and fitness program and for our clinic. It’s a school attended by children who are physically and developmentally disabled. One of our players, Pedro Araujo, who had already made his major league debut, was there rehabbing. While he was here, this little boy with Down syndrome was playing catcher and Pedro was the catcher for the pitcher. The little boy went right next to Pedro and got down next to Pedro. And to just see them together was so special. I sent Pedro the picture and he said that’s what it’s all about.” That is what it is all about. This game called baseball. A ball. A bat. A glove. A kid. A hero. And a simple game of catch. As simple and sublime as a perfectly manicured baseball diamond in the heart of Sarasota on a spring day. A place the Orioles call home for a couple of months a year while making a difference year-round. By reaching out. Making a pitch. And by providing a field of dreams for the whole community to enjoy.

Education MATTERS By Ryan G. Van Cleave
THE JFCS LEGACY OF BETTY SCHOENBAUM The purpose of this monthly column is to place a spotlight on difference-making people, places, events, programs, and organizations in our community that have a strong educational focus. One name that has come up time and time again is the late Betty Schoenbaum, whose philanthropic and personal commitment to education touched the lives of more people than anyone could possibly count. For someone with the well-known motto “the joy of giving is the joy of living,” it’s no surprise that the number of beneficiaries of that joy is vast. The Schoenbaum Family Enrichment Center in Charleston, West Virginia. The Schoenbaum Family Foundation. The Alex and Betty Schoenbaum Science, Education, Cultural and Sports Campus in Kiryat Yam, Israel. And many local charities, as well, including the Women’s Resource Center, the Glasser-Schoenbaum Human Services Center, and the Salvation Army. But a local organization that was always dear to Betty’s heart is JFCS of the Suncoast, a multi-function family agency that serves residents of Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, Lee, and Collier Counties. Throughout the years, Betty funded a host of initiatives through them to promote education, help children, and support cancer survivors. I’ve written about her support in these areas before, and I can’t tell you how many times people call her a champion, a hero, and a Godsend. Though Betty passed away at age 100 on July 31, 2018, her name is once again appearing in this column thanks to a surprise gift to JFCS. The unexpected $150,000 endowment she left them was designed to help students attend college with a focus on a career in family services. But it’s more than that. The recipients will be those who have been served by the JFCS’ mental health and social services programming in some manner, such as through the Eluna Foundation and JFCS’ Camp Mariposa, which offers free counseling and support to youth ages 9-17 who are coping with the substance abuse of a loved one.
Like others at JFCS, Betty knew that children who live in a home with addiction are often deeply committed to helping others because they know how great the pain can be—and they don’t want others to ever experience it. Turning tragedy into strength is the sort of thing Betty appreciated. JFCS’ Chief Development Officer, Laura McManus-Mesia, notes that the impact of Betty’s gift is twofold. One—Betty led by example, and her generosity encourages others to give. Plus she thought creatively about her investment and how to make it go far versus simply being a one-off. Setting up a fund where the interest can be drawn without touching the principal will create a long-term ripple effect that can touch many, many lives. Two—it furthers education efforts, which was one of Betty’s top goals. By helping people who’ve been through trauma, those MARCH 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

difficult situations will be transformed through education into a great good. “It’s a fine example of high philanthropy at this time,” notes McManus-Mesia. “She’s created an immediate solution that also has long-term benefits.” McManus notes that the Schoenbaum family is taking great interest in this scholarship and will be consulted about recipient selections. Who better to help ensure that Betty’s legacy of good work is carried on by a deserving young person with a goal to give back? At JFCS, says McManus-Mesia, “each child is catered for in their own way. We work to help children make great strides in the classroom and in their lives.” Add in a warm, loving family environment and all the pieces begin to come together. A scholarship like this one—and the thousands of others that Betty and her family made available to a variety schools, such as Ohio State, West Virginia, and the University of Charleston—is what’s making a difference. Betty understood that education is a fundamental part of every strategy for success. Roxie Jerde, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County—a frequent partner of Betty’s endeavors—adds

that “Betty believed wholeheartedly in helping children and teens expand their opportunities through education. It is heartwarming to know that the gift she left for JFCS will forever provide learning scholarships in her name and honor her giving spirit.” McManus-Mesia has worked in the development side of nonprofits in Ireland, Australia, and the UK for two decades. What’s different about Sarasota, she explains, is that “the diversity of giving here surprises me, and the generosity inspires me.” With philanthropic leaders like Betty leading the way in both word and deed, our community’s commitment to support is contagious. “There are no luggage racks on the hearse,” Betty once said. And this latest gift to JFCS says all of that. And more. F O R M O R E IN F O R M AT IO N

Meet Artist
KAREN CHANDLER
Karen Chandler’s work today can be defined by one word: eclectic.
She started her artistic journey studying realistic oil painting for five years at the Stevenson Academy of Traditional Painting in Sea Cliff, New York and afterward at the New York School of Visual Arts (design) and New York Institute of Technology (photography). She then started illustrating book covers for most of the major publishing houses including Simon & Schuster, Random House and Bantam Books. Today, Karen has turned to fine arts painting in oils and acrylics with an emphasis on what she calls Vintage Pop. Her “fashionista” women and “beach babes” series capture the essence of the fun and lighthearted pleasure that is Suncoast life. Also an accomplished photographer, she traveled to Ghana in 2013 to document the work of a visiting health team. The trip resulted in two dozen stunning images that capture the soul of her subjects and of the nation itself. She has also had exhibitions throughout the country and her work is in several private collections. A participant in the NASA and Air Force Art Programs, several of her paintings hang in the Pentagon and at the Kennedy Space Center. With all of her stunning work, it’s not hard to see why the word eclectic perfectly defines her work. Find more of Karen’s work at karenchandlerfineart.com.

InHEALTH COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT DEPRESSION By Dr. Rebecca Cohen Dr. Cohen is a psychiatrist specializing in psychopharmacology for mood and anxiety disorders as well as TMS therapy.
MY LIFE IS GOOD, SO WHY DO I FEEL SO DEPRESSED? AND WHY CAN’T I SNAP MYSELF OUT OF IT? The most important thing to know is that depression is a medical condition with effective medical solutions. You wouldn’t blame yourself for not overcoming a thyroid condition on your own, and you also should not blame yourself for not being able to “snap yourself out” of depression. With major depression, the brain becomes entrenched in negative, worried and distorted thinking, which makes it hard to be aware of the positive aspects of your life or even to remember how you felt before you were depressed. That can lead to hopelessness, despair and anxiety. HOW CAN YOU KNOW IF SOMEONE IS DEPRESSED? The changes from depression can be subtle at first, and they develop over time so we may not even be aware of them. The symptoms usually go beyond feelings of sadness. Everyone gets down sometimes, but those with major depression struggle with symptoms every day. As depression progresses, cognitive function is affected, including lack of confidence and ability to make decisions, even small ones. One client told me, “I go to the grocery store and can’t put anything into the cart. I don’t know what I want any more.” Sleep is often
disrupted, and people can lose interest in things that once gave them joy, including food, which can also lead to weight loss. Severe fatigue may drive people to see their family doctor. Staying in bed, lack of grooming, and becoming withdrawn are commonly described symptoms. WHAT ARE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR DEPRESSION? The first step is finding a mental health professional who will discuss your symptoms and create an individualized treatment plan. For patients with mild depression, this may mean adjusting stress levels, improving sleep routines and making behavioral adjustments. For major depression, medications are the first line of treatment. Today’s medications are highly effective, much easier to tolerate, and a psychiatrist can nuance medications for best results. These could include antidepressants along with medications to relieve anxiety or help reestablish normal sleep patterns. Proper dosing strategies can improve outcomes and minimize side effects. It also is important for people to reestablish their usual routine, which should include exercise, good nutrition and social engagement. The support of friends and family is crucial.
WILL I NEED THERAPY, TOO? Individuals with moderate or severe depression demonstrate significantly better outcomes by combining medication and psychotherapy. Many options for therapy are effective including cognitive behavioral therapy and those emphasizing mindfulness. I’VE BEEN ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS, BUT THEY DON’T SEEM TO BE WORKING. WHAT NOW? Keep in mind that it takes time for medications to work–often a month or more. So if you’re just starting treatment, you can be hopeful that you will be feeling much better soon. Some individuals are identified with treatment resistant depression (TRD) and newer treatments offer them real hope for improvement as well. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive, well-tolerated treatment that focuses MRI-level magnetic energy on the brain’s mood center. Patients have little or no discomfort, and many show an exciting amount of improvement. I always want to offer my patients hope, and with the current treatments that are available, people can feel better and find the joy in life again. Rebecca S. Cohen M.D. 1217 S. LITERARY Scene
4 BOOKISH QUESTIONS WITH 4 BOOK LOVERS This month, Literary Scene goes rogue—no book reviews from Ryan. Instead, we asked Ryan and three other local book lovers “bookish” questions we hope you’ll enjoy.
RYAN G. VAN CLEAVE Head of the Ringling College creative writing program
What are you reading now?
Two books. The first is the first novel in a new series by Karen Rose—Say You’re Sorry. There’s a killer on the loose in Sacramento but a girl finally escapes with a much-needed bit of evidence. What’s cool is that the book is told from the perspectives of an FBI agent, a victim, and a serial murderer. Reading this is about as disturbing as binge-watching Criminal Minds, but Rose is a talented writer so it’s hard to put down. I might review this in full for another Literary Scene column. The other book is an older one—Kelly Link’s 2008 short story collection Pretty Monsters. She finds ways to twist magic into her stories in such surprising and impressive ways. The two stories I’d start with? “Magic of Beginners” and “The Faery Handbag.” The latter can be read for free via her website, kellylink.net/books/pretty-monsters
What’s the last great book you read?
Hmm. Great? That’s a tall order. But I read The Great Gatsby the other day to inspire me to write my own 1920s novel. What isn’t right about that book?
So you’re inviting four characters from the world of books (real or imagined, living or dead) to an afternoon on Siesta Key Beach. Who joins you for some fun in the sun?
Ask me a week from now and I’ll have different answers. But today? Voldemort, Frodo, Snowball (from Animal Farm) and Shakespeare’s Falstaff. And I’d probably find a way for Holden Caulfield to join us for after-sunning pineapple smoothies. Just because.

E-reader or Old School?
I own a Kindle but still read 99% of things off actual paper. I’m a literary dinosaur, I suppose.
PETER MILLER Writer, Composer, Entrepreneur
What are you reading now?
I’m a simultaneous (you might even say promiscuous) reader and switch among several books. My focus recently has been essays, biography and history. They include Wasteland, The Great War and the Origins of Modern Horror by W. Scott Poole, Provocations by Camille Paglia, Churchill, Walking with Destiny by Andrew Roberts, Robert Graves, From Great War Poet to Good-Bye to All That, 1895-1929 by Jean Moorcroft Wilson, Catastrophe and other Stories by Dino Buzzati and Proust’s Duchesses by Caroline Weber.
What’s the last great book you read?
I loved At the Existentialist Café: F re e d o m , B e i n g , a n d A p r i c o t Cocktails with Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Martin Heidegger, Maurice MerleauPonty and Others by Sarah Bakewell. For anyone interested in modern philosophy, it’s a must read.
So you’re inviting four characters from the world of books (real or imagined, living or dead) to dinner at Café L’Europe. Who’s joining you for truffle fries and mushroom soup? Samuel Pickwick, Marcel Proust, Ulrich (from A Man without Qualities by Robert Musil), and Lord Beaverbrook.
Similes or metaphors?
In the morning, before coffee, I like a good simile. At night, nothing satisfies like a well-wrought metaphor.

JIM SHIRLEY Executive Director of the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading 2 books. The first, which I borrowed (stole) from my wife is Becoming Michelle Obama. I always love to learn the stories behind the story makers. The second is A Dedicated Life, Journalism, Justice, and a Chance for Every Child by David Lawrence. He is a fascinating man with a strong track record of tackling difficult problems head on. I love his philosophy on leadership.
What’s the last great book you read?
The Reversal by Michael Connelly. I like to read easy mystery novels at bedtime as a means of relaxing from the day. Next up is Field of Prey by John Sandford. Both are older but full of suspense and are fun to read.
So you’re inviting four characters from the world of books (real or imagined, living or dead) to play a no-holds-barred game of Monopoly with you. Who’s coming to that board game party?
The Monopoly game would be a real hoot for my game night. Groucho Marx would definitely be in the game. I read his Letters from and to Groucho Marx while I was in college and have always wished I could have gotten to know him better. Definitely would want Nana Mama, who is Alex Cross’ grandmother in the James Patterson novel series. She has too much wisdom and humor to pass on. Next would be the character “Dreamer Tatum” of the Dog-Ass Jets from Dan Jenkins 1972 novel Semi Tough. I have never laughed so hard as I did reading that book. The last would actually be an author, S. I. Hayakawa who wrote The Story of A-town and B-ville: A Semantic Parable. He has been one of the greatest influences on my language development through the years.
Hardcover or paperback?
I read both, but I gravitate to paperback because they are easier to read in different situations.
From its inviting old world charm and sophistication to its timeless, artistic cuisine, let the legendary Cafe L’Europe take you on an unforgettable culinary adventure.

There are always rumors, there’s always some hope that there’s good food after 10pm, but it’s pretty hard to find a place when you want one. The new Tamiami Tap bar and restaurant has stepped up to the challenge, hoping to be the kind of neighborhood hang out joint that both serves locals and offers good food even after midnight. So far they’re off to a good start. The Osprey Avenue location has hosted a number of different restaurants over the years, including a Word of Mouth location for quite a while. I’ve alway enjoyed the bright, airy dining room, and Tamiami Tap has taken full advantage of the generous outdoor seating area. On a beautiful evening, with all the doors open and the breeze blowing, its mix of bar, tabletop dining, and lounge areas feels delightful and welcoming. As the name suggests, Tamiami Tap offers draft beer as well as bottled, with a nice mix of local brews and popular brands, along with a full bar and some intriguing cocktails. The menu is pretty straightforward American bar and grill food. Burgers, sandwiches, shrimp, fish tacos, salads. On Fridays and Saturdays they also serve prime rib, which is always a crowd pleaser. There are a few more interesting 30 1130

on the town offerings, such as the Tuna Poke appetizer served with tortilla chips, which is a nice, light and tasty opening act that feels a little more adventuresome. There are also plenty of good options for vegetarians, including the Impossible meat-substitute in both burger and taco forms. I’ve been following Impossible foods for a couple of years now, ever since glowing initial reports from food writers who taste-tested the original formula. Impossible products are entirely vegetable-based, but use a naturally occurring molecule called heme to produce a meaty flavor. It’s great to be able to get them in Sarasota, and it’s definitely something that sets Tamiami Tap apart from the crowd. Now your late-night munchies can be at least a little bit healthy too.

The Lazy Parrot
I drive through the intersection of Webber and Beneva in Sarasota almost every day, and for years there’s been an abandoned bank right there on the corner. Then last year construction started. A new bank? No. I watched week after week as they transformed the drive-through bank teller area into a big, open air bar. I kind of couldn’t believe it, but it’s true, and the result is The Lazy Parrot, a bar, grill, and live music venue that’s now packed every time I drive by. And there’s the one big challenge of success: parking. The restaurant sits in the parking lot of a small strip of stores that includes at least five or six other restaurants and bars. Finding a spot to go anywhere in the strip is a challenge on a Friday night. There is more parking behind the strip, and across Webber, but it’s not ideal. Once you’re inside (maybe take an Uber or Lyft?), The Lazy Parrot has a lot to offer. The menu is bordering on vast. There’s nothing too inventive, but there are a lot of appealing options: eight kinds of burgers (including veggie), twelve different sandwiches (including the slightly unusual Beef on a Weck roast beef sandwich from Buffalo), and personal pizzas. And then all the classic Americana mains, from steak and fish to pasta and tacos. There’s also a raw bar with oysters along with cooked shrimp and mussels. The big attraction of course is the added experience besides the food and drink. There’s the open air location, which is great when the weather’s nice. TVs show the big game, whatever it is that day. But really, it’s the music. There’s live music every night, usually from around 5 p.m. to around 10 p.m., give or take half an hour. Styles vary from acoustic to rock to funk, so check out theparrotpatiobar. com to see who’s playing any given night.

Laughing MATTERS THE ONE WITH UNICORNS By Ryan G. Van Cleave | Illustrations by Darcy Kelly-Laviolette
I
hate unicorns.
Now wait. Before you cancel your Sarasota Scene subscription or launch this copy of the mag into the stratosphere with an only-heard-by-dogs screech of horror, let me explain myself. I REALLY hate unicorns. And I think we all know why. Yes, there’s something sinister about a magical critter that poops rainbows and zips about in a cloud of glitter and sparkle. And there’s a National Unicorn Day (April 9!). WHAT???? Plus of course, all parents everywhere are horrified at the unicorn invasion of the kidlit marketplace. It’s more than just books, though. They’re on wallpaper. Pillows. Cereal boxes. Kid undies. PJs. Bookbags. Coffee mugs. Pencils. Is nothing safe from this unicorn plague? I’d have to say that as a parent of two semi-young girls, I receive 9,4883,32.3% of the government-suggested % Daily Value of Unicorn-ness. That alone is reason enough, right? But the #1 reason that I REALLY hate unicorns (and quite frankly, so should you!) is this. I was traumatized by a unicorn in the fourth grade. This big, ugly unicorn monster stormed up to me at the front steps of Shady Lane Elementary School, stole my lunch money, stomped on my R2D2 backpack, and then stabbed me in the stomach with its razor-sharp silver-tipped horn. Okay. I’m exaggerating a bit. The horn was platinum tipped and had little tinkly bells on it.
Well, if you’re going to get all truthy about it, then it was a chubster bully named Bob and he DID steal my lunch money. He DID stomp on my R2D2 backpack. And then he stabbed me in the heart—with his horrible, jerky, bully-style laughter. Worst of all, he was wearing a Unicorns Rule! t-shirt. Total truthiness. “How were kids not bullying that bully?” you might ask. Wish I knew! So I hate unicorns. But if that semi-harsh stance on these vile creatures troubles you, I can offer this to counterbalance things. I love penguins. I’m a fan of Opus the Penguin (from the Bloom County comic). I like Captain Cook, Gretta, and the others from Mr. Popper’s Penguins. And who doesn’t get a flappy pitter-patter in their aquatic hearts upon seeing The Amigos from Happy Feet? Let me put it even more plainly. If I’m picking players for an imaginary softball team, I’m starting with Chilly Willy, Pingu, Tennessee Tuxedo, Feathers McGraw, and the whole team from Madagascar—Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private. I’d also sign up the penguin waiters from Mary Poppins, Wheezy from Toy Story 2, and Pablo the Penguin from The Three Caballeros. Without a doubt, our team name would be The Rockhoppers. Sidenote—my younger daughter came into my office just now and she asked me what I’m writing about. When I said I was in the middle of a Very Serious Rant about the profundity of my penguin love (and after I explained what “profundity” is), she insisted that I include her three favorite penguin jokes. Without further ado, here they are. What do penguins like to eat? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrritos. What do penguins wear on their heads? Ice caps.

insider What’s black, white, black, white, black, white, black, white? A penguin rolling down a hill. I have no idea if Sarasota Scene readers are impressed by these elementary school gems, but my kid? She can barely catch her breath from all the giggles. So . . . Back to our regularly-scheduled column—it’s right now that I realize that my kid is wearing a unicorn clip in her hair. ARGH! I have to confront this head on, I decide. Or horn on, as the case may be. Me: What’s so great about unicorns? Her: They’re awesome. Me: Because why?

Her: Duh. It’s hard not to be persuaded by logic such as that. Maybe I do need to reconsider my stance on the horribleness that is unicorns. Perhaps they aren’t the single worst thing ever witnessed between the dawn of time and heat death of the universe. I’ll leave you with this, dear readers. I’ve got a buddy who’s a high finance guy, and sometimes he shares a stock tip with his pals. And he’s pretty much always right. I’m a generous person, too, so I’ll share my own tip with you. Penguins. That’s going to be the next craze. Hop off the unicorn bandwagon right this moment and waddle your way to the penguin boat. You’ll thank me later when you can wear a “I liked penguins before it was cool!” t-shirt without it being a total lie. Got your own everyone-loves-it-but-me thing to rail about? Do you have a beef against beanbag chairs, blanket forts, or bobble heads? Do disco balls, dinosaurs, or dragons make you cringe? Are you driven to near-madness by funnel cakes, fireworks, or fairies? If so, then fire off those perfectly-understandable rants to ryanhatesunicorns@scenesarasota.com as soon as humanly possible. If not faster.
