LONG BEFORE THE STAGE CURTAINS OPEN, creative professionals have been working hard, collaborating to bring their artistic vision to life. In this issue of Sarasota Scene, we invite you to take an inside look at the magic of costume design at The Sarasota Ballet. Stepping behind the curtain will give you a better understanding and appreciation of all the effort and skill that goes into our region’s first-rate performances, events, and exhibitions. We are privileged to enjoy a wealth of cultural treasures that rival those found anywhere in the country. I have been fortunate to attend wonderful performances this season, including heartwarming, funny, and poignant shows at the Asolo Repertory Theatre. I have enjoyed great opera and ballet performances that demonstrated the incredible talent that resides in Sarasota. I have listened to wonderful music and amazing voices at the Orchestra, Florida Studio Theatre, and West Coast Black Theatre Troupe. Although our theaters are not entirely full again, many of us share the desire and motivation to get out and enjoy these wonderful performances. Fortunately, our performing arts organizations do a great job of keeping everyone safe, so please buy your tickets and enjoy. Philanthropic activities have begun moving forward and been very successful, even as the fundraisers and galas have changed dates and venues. The 2022 Palm Ball, Van Wezel Foundation Gala, Circus Gala, and Orchid Ball—each always held in the open air under a marquee—went ahead without a hitch and proved

successful both at raising funds and delivering a great time to all who attended. We are very fortunate to live in Florida. Sarasota is also seeing a wonderful comeback in support for special causes, with many smaller events again taking place. Groups and organizations like the Sarasota Opera Guild, Temple Beth Sholom, and TREE Foundation are holding events scheduled in previous years to complement their on-going efforts. Recognition dinners and events for supporters, donors, and members have been taking place after long delays, such as Starry Night for Asolo Rep and the Unconventional Evening at Sarasota Art Museum. Certainly, this is shaping up to be a bit of a transition season for Sarasota’s art and philanthropic organizations. With so many galas, fundraisers, and recognition events postponed to later in the season—sometimes causing multiple events to be booked on the same evening—we can find ourselves having to choose where to focus our support, participation, and attention. I am looking forward to the Sarasota Opera Gala celebrating the 40th anniversary of Maestro Victor DeRenzi, a JoshProvides interactive dinner, and SPARCC Runway SRQ2022—just to name a few. When I interviewed Jack and Priscilla Schlegel for this article, one thing became immediately apparent—they were one of Those Couples. Happy. Joyous. Equals. “We’re best friends who’ve been married for fifty years, or something like that,” said one, to which the other said, “Fifty-four years.” And it’s pure clarifying versus chastising. Later, they told me: “We complement each other, learn from each other, and grow together.” Given that, it makes perfect sense when they explain, “In our interest areas and our thoughts about philanthropy, we are absolutely alike.” While the Schlegels are making their mark on the local philanthropic scene after moving here in 1998, it’s not from seeing philanthropy firsthand as children. Priscilla says that neither of them grew up with that kind of wealth. In fact, Jack worked hard to put himself through pharmacy school at the University of the Pacific—the same school Priscilla attended for a year before transferring to University of California-Berkeley, where she fell in love with computers but ended up with a degree in the humanities. She fell in love with Jack, too, and soon after they both completed school, the two married. After

robust careers that took them to Washington, DC—he worked as CEO for the American Pharmacists Association, and she worked for the RAND Corporation, which is a nonprofit global policy think tank—they’d had enough of the cold weather. A friend insisted, “You’ve got to go to Sarasota. That’s where all the culture is!” “And that’s why we’re here,” Jack said with a laugh. It proved to be the perfect place for them to live because they both love the arts. Jack pointed out that the Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s art critic, Jay Handelman, jokes to them that “you go to more things than I do!” And Jay might be correct. Jack and Priscilla have season subscriptions “to every professional theatre in Sarasota,” and they’re often attending shows four or five nights a week. Soon after they relocated to Florida, a philanthropist neighbor told Jack and Priscilla that while they were supporting the arts to a degree, they should give more generously if they could. “The hearse doesn’t have luggage racks,” she warned. Even if they weren’t childless, Jack and Priscilla believed that advice to be spot-on. “If you give it away while you’re alive, you can enjoy seeing it being used,” Jack realized. “You can hold organizations

accountable to make that happen, and you’ll derive enormous pleasure. You might even stimulate others to be more generous!” They took philanthropy so seriously that they enrolled in a philanthropy course to ensure they moved forward in a sensible manner. From that point on, they realized that they could afford to give more heavily, which led them to helping the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and the Manatee Performing Arts Center build two new theaters. “We really like how they have good education programs, and how they promote youth in the arts,” Priscilla said. At the end of 2021, she and Jack donated $200,000 to support Florida Studio Theatre as a gift to celebrate how local theatre engages people, creates community, and promotes education. To help them with their philanthropy, Jack and Priscilla partnered with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County in 2015. “We did our research on them and we were very impressed,” Jack said. “We actually interviewed the Foundation to see if it was where we wanted to put our money. We liked their philosophy—it’s so rooted

in really understanding the needs of the community. They also had the ability to help us set things up so that, upon our deaths, our remaining wealth will be administered by them in perpetuity to help the areas we believe in. They gave us that mechanism.” Jack and Priscilla love partnering with the Community Foundation in general and its president and CEO Roxie Jerde, in specific, because Roxie is a fan of partnerships and offering ways to encourage others toward philanthropy efforts. Jack added, “We like to leverage our money in such a way that draws in other people to participate. We’ve found that it works. If you offer a 1:1 match with donations, it brings out a lot of new donors.” While Jack and Priscilla have various philanthropic interests—they support numerous health and social services, such as school lunch programs over the summer, and Jack serves on the board of the New College Foundation—their passion in the arts is unmistakable. Jack made a point of noting that “one of the things we want to see is a new orchestra hall. We’re going

to be behind that big-time when it’s ready to move forward.” He emphasized how special our community is by citing how during the pandemic, many orchestras around the world fired their musicians because no performances were happening. While the Sarasota Orchestra wasn’t performing either, not a single performer was laid off. Not one. “They survived because of philanthropy. We’re glad to have been part of that.” Through the arts, Jack and Priscilla have “met absolutely wonderful people, many of whom we might not otherwise have met. They’re so intellectually and psychologically stimulating.” Plus, Jack notes that when they see live shows, they’re completely engaged. For example, when they attend a show at the Florida Studio Theatre, “it’s just so thought-provoking. We spend our time walking back home talking about the play. Often before going to sleep, we’re still talking about the play. What was its message? What does it represent? It occupies so much of our mental space.” I don’t quite recall whether it was Jack or Priscilla who said this, but it doesn’t matter since they both so clearly meant it. “It’s just our life, the arts,” they told me. “It’s totally who we are.”

A choreographer has ideas that a designer translates into cloth. Together, in coordination with set and lighting designers, they create the visual art of dance. Wardrobers add another eye and voice as they manage practical considerations like fit and shoes.

The physical demands of ballet provide a reality check. Come a big lift in the choreography, “if there’s too much tulle, too much costume, and a dancer can’t find his partner’s waist, then something has to give,” says Webb. “That's when the two creative teams come together, usually behind closed doors.” So integral are costumes to the vision of a particular ballet that “the bible”—the binder of notes from the original performance—includes costume sketches and often swatches of fabric should they ever need to be recreated. Whenever possible, the company that premieres a ballet hangs onto the costumes fabricated for it, sometimes selling them but more often reusing and renting them out when other companies stage a production. It’s not surprising then that The Sarasota Ballet owns the garb and sometimes the sets for productions such as Sir Frederick Ashton's Les Rendezvous or in-house choreographer Ricardo Graziano's Before Night Falls.

FROM STEPS TO STITCHES The Sarasota Ballet’s last program of the season in April, Serendipitous Movement, features a trio of pieces, which means three sets of costumes. The bal let already owns t he finery for George Balanchine's Serenade, first performed in 1934. The

choreographer revised the costumes as he revised the ballet. Jerry Wolf, head of wardrobe for The Sarasota Ballet, says that costuming for traditional Balanchine ballets tends to follow (Barbara) Karinska’s designs of the ‘40s and ‘50s. “So, there’s no question mark when it comes to Balanchine, whether you make it or borrow it.” Uncomplicated, but not easy. Costumers have to mind the skirt color, leotard color, and drape of the fabric. “I don't know that many people realize this,” adds Wolf, “but the way the skirts are set on the leotard in Serenade, they're higher on the left hip and lower on the right hip. There's a little angle to the skirt, the way it attaches to the bodice, and it's very subtle. “These designers—they’re usually great characters,” says Webb. He recalls painter and designer Yolanda Sonnabend, a frequent Kenneth MacMillan collaborator, ready to rip out the interior of a costume right before the curtain went up at The Royal Ballet because “she still wasn’t quite happy with it.” Costuming has attracted the greats: Think Henri Matisse pinning cutouts on the unitard of ballerina Alicia Markova for a 1938 Ballet Russe production of Rouge et Noir.

Mid-program, The Sarasota Ballet is dancing the company premiere of Mark Morris’s The Letter V. Like all costumes, The Letter V’s come with a story. It started with young ballet dancer Maile [pronounced Miley] Okamura moving to New York City. She found work with “a lot of downtown choreographers, meaning choreographers without a lot of money.” She could dance, but she could also sew, something she learned from her mom. So, to keep food in the fridge, she picked up costume work. Over time, her hobby turned into a whole strand of her career. Many companies need costumes, and as a dancer herself, she understands “the needs of movement,” she says. Besides the defined waist for partnering, dancers demand “freedom to move the legs, freedom to move the torso. A dancer doesn't want to feel the costume at

all. They don't want to be restrained or restricted. In any way. So that's one of my priorities.” She transitioned from ballet to modern dance and performed for more than two decades with the Mark Morris Dance Group—and still does periodically. Morris, however, like Okamura, has a foot in both modern dance and ballet. In 2015, the Houston Ballet commissioned him to choreograph The Letter V, and he tapped Okamura to design the costumes. Okamura accompanied him to Houston to watch rehearsals and listen to the Haydn score. “He said, ‘I see stripes.’” So, Okamura used various stripes— and checks and very bold patterns--to accentuate the choreography. “Mark has just a beautiful use of

symmetry, pattern, and repetition. It’s in all of his work, his modern work, his ballet work. And I know it very well.” Okamura made drawings and browsed fabric stores for the “ethereal silk and transparency” they envisioned. The Houston Ballet costume shop built the costumes, which got their test at the final dress rehearsal. To the designers’ delight, the lines and patterns complemented the choreography, transforming the third movement circle dance into a kaleidoscope.

But the story doesn’t end there. Cyclone flooding swamped the Houston Ballet, so The Letter V costumes had to be completely rebuilt. And since the original fabric was no longer available, “we had to go through a painstaking process of digitally rebuilding it,” Okamura says.

After the blues and greens of The Letter V, Webb has chosen to wrap up Serendipitous Movement on a colorful note. Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s Elite Syncopations erupts with costumes as vibrant as the Scott Joplin score. Ian Spurling creations, they’re on loan from Birmingham Royal Ballet. Spurling “just went to town on every color that came at that point in light fiber-tip pens,” Webb says.

FROM CRATE TO STAGE Webb’s plans for an upcoming season rev wardrobe work at The Sarasota Ballet. “He will usually hire whatever ballets we don't own or don't want to build,” says wardrober Wolf. The company usually chooses one or two ballets to fabricate in house; for instance, Wolf collaborated with choreographer Ricardo Graziano and assistant director Margaret Barbieri on designing costumes for the world premiere of Graziano’s Sonatina last fall. Otherwise, contracts fly and costumes ship up to a year in 68

advance of a performance. The Letter V costumes arrived months ago—but then had to make a quick roundtrip to Houston Ballet for a photoshoot. As head of wardrobe, Wolf also analyzes the ballet and the bible, which includes who wore what when. Although ballet costumes are constructed for ease of alteration, they do come in different sizes. Wolf assigns the soloists first, then the corps parts. Even with early castings, Wolf says he waits until the first week of rehearsals to set up fitting appointments with dancers, working around their schedules. For every outfit, he takes notes and makes labels. While costumes are in residence, Wolf’s responsible for everything from storage to cleaning. Lots of cleaning, much of it by hand, to remove sweat and smeared stage makeup. Imagine washing uniforms for a team of pro athletes—all on delicate. Tights and footwear next command Wolf’s attention. Shoes have a “ridiculously short” shelf life. Roughly $100 a pair, women’s pointe shoes last about a week of rehearsals. “It's because the boxes are really just cardboard that's been impregnated with different types of stiffeners. And when that shoe box that contains their toes and the end of

their foot stretches out too much, or it gets too flexible, dancers can't stand up on it. It's a dead shoe.” Squirts of high-tech glue buy maybe one more performance. Men’s slippers last longer, but they too stretch out and lose their grip on the floor. Each pair for performance requires coloring. Men’s flats come mostly in flesh tones, so to get them to look black for The Letter V under the stage lighting, Wolf paints them navy blue. The color doesn’t come from a can: He mixes a combo of blues, blacks, and whites—special acrylicbased paint. “And then I add some secret ingredients, which I will not reveal. Acrylic paints by nature on a fabric turn very hard. As the shoes dry, I have a way of adding something that will keep the canvas part flexible.”

Wolf says most wardrobers have their secret sauce. But his painting technique isn’t proprietary: Instead of using

in costume design. Soon he traded performing for costuming, traveling with Broadway shows like The Wiz on tour.

a brush, he cuts up a household sponge and dabs on paint, avoiding some surfaces, such as the split sole on the bottom of men’s slippers. “You can't paint that since it would close all the pores up and create a hazard.” For Elite Syncopations, he’s matching outrageous colors— purples, yellows, oranges—in tights and shoes, mostly pointe shoes. They come standard in pink, satiny on the outside, with ribbons, so he’s dyeing them. Wolf came to The Sarasota Ballet six seasons ago, capping a long career in theater in ballet. As a Catholic schoolboy in Portland, he danced and acted in plays and at college majored in technical theater with an emphasis

What’s his favorite part of wardrobing? Working with the dancers. And that moment “when we're done.” Although Wolf stays in the wings during performances, at dress rehearsal, he can sit back and watch, just appreciating the beauty. Sometimes soft and flowy, sometimes stiff and geometric, the clothes reveal a silhouette. Often, he says, you design a costume and then strip away elements to avoid clutter, so that the audience can better appreciate the choreography through the lines of dancers’ bodies. “Although there are many ballets that have very iconic looks, the whole point in costumes for ballet is not to make some big fashion statement.” Webb also relishes the moment before performance, imagining the audience’s anticipation. “They don't quite know what's behind that curtain.” When it goes up on Serendipitous Movement, Webb says, they’ll find “this program is just a visual feast of colors and styles and movement.”

Wander the streets of downtown Sarasota and suddenly your eye is drawn in by a bright tubular figure. You just discovered the handiwork of Sarasota yacht-builder-turned-sculptor, Scott Gerber, creator of the iconic “Tube Dude.”

He and his team now offer choices suitable for work and home—ranging from waving figures to mermaid mailbox holders, to playful dogs, flowers, sports motifs, and peace signs.

How did Tube Dude begin? When a recession forced Gerber to close his yacht building company and lay off more than 120 employees, he felt devastated. “In 2010, everyone was hurt by the economy,” says Gerber. “I built the tube dudes to inspire people to be happier. I initially made four and put them outside, each holding signs like ‘Hang in there’ and ‘It’s going to be better.’”

What’s the latest? Today, more than 8,000 Tube Dude creations are displayed coast-to-coast. They’re even a hit on Instagram.

Not originally intended as a business, word of the tube dudes got around, and soon demand grew for the whimsical people, animals, and shapes constructed from powder-coated metal tubing. The bright, upbeat sculptures are sturdy enough to endure the harsh coastal environment. “Every work is hand-crafted in Sarasota and designed by the customer,” says Gerber. “Each is unique and one-of-a-kind.”

“We presently have the most photographed art in NYC,” says Gerber of the 10-foot tall Peace, Love, and Happiness sculpture permanently installed at South Street Seaport in Manhattan. “When you drive across the Brooklyn B ridge, you can see that on the pier. Because of its popularity, we got a contract to do the same thing for Mexico City.” And closer to home, Gerber plans to donate a 13-foot tall sculpture called Love Sarasota with a giant heart with the letters SRQ. Nathan Benderson Park By Ryan G. Van Cleave December 2021 saw the launch of the NBP/Spirit of America Premier Youth Boating Education Camp, created in conjunction with the Spirit of America Foundation, a national organization committed to offering safe and comprehensive water-based educational and recreational programming. This unique opportunity for local kids aged 10-15 allowed them to learn boatmanship both academically and experientially. Not only did they acquire the lifelong skills of safe sailing, paddling, and powerboating, but they each earned their Florida boating license and now have the ability to confidently share what they’ve learned with others. The park’s media and communications manager, Douglas Jessmer, says, “We’re planning to do it again over spring break and over summer, as well. We’re growing the next generation of boaters. Having capable, well-educated kids who can go

safely out on the water is a great way to encourage and teach others. It’s a win/win for all of us.” Jessmer works for Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates Inc. (SANCA), a not-for-profit business created to manage Nathan Benderson Park. While the park is officially a Sarasota County Park, it’s unique in that it’s a world-class event center and team training site. SANCA helps promote that fact in addition to providing outreach programs through recreation, safety training, education, and volunteering as a service to the community. Miriam Ward has served as the park’s programs and aquatic manager since September, and she says no two days are the same. “One day, I could be teaching archery to 30 kids and making sure all the gas tanks are full for the boats, and the next day, it could be totally different.”

One of the myths about the park that she’d like to dispel is that you need to know someone or be part of a group to use it. “We’re here for the entire community,” she says. “There are no prerequisites. There’s nothing you need to be a part of this family here.” Another myth she’s encountering is that people assume the park doesn’t offer what they want—it’s just rowing or sailing. The reality is that the land-based activities they offer is too long to list, but here are just some of the things one can do: walking, running, cycling, skating, bird watching, and fishing, plus there’s yoga in the park, Flex Fitness, Zumba, and radio-controlled sailboats. They also have camps galore beyond the new boating education camp. There’s the Water Adventure Camp, the Archery & Freshwater Fishing Camp, the Learn to Sail Camp, the NBP Ultimate Camp, and more. While fun is a clear goal with every camp, the curriculum for each is created by some of the most accomplished people in that sport or area to ensure that all participants obtain the knowledge and safety skills needed to be successful. The park’s training opportunities for adults are just as popular, too. A few months back, they ran a Learn to Row course, and the interest was so high that they MARCH 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE

had to raise the cap beyond the expected capacity. The youngest participant was 25, the oldest was 72, and the range of people in terms of background, career, and ethnicity was extremely diverse. Everyone had a great time and learned the basics of the rowing stroke and how to handle equipment during the six-hour session. They’ve even got the popular five-week Camp Gladiator fitness program, which is led by certified personal fitness trainers. Each “camp” is a 60-minute, full-body workout designed to happen outdoors, but they now offer it virtually, as well. If you want to incorporate cardio and strength exercises into your workouts, this camp is for you. If a camp or a course seems like too much of an initial commitment, there’s always the option of attending an NBP Rec Day, where people can try out paddleboats, kayaks, canoes, and sailing on their own. For a four-hour 88

window of access, it’s just $10 for adults and only $5 for kids over six. “It’s an underutilized opportunity for people that’s also quite good for homeschool or virtual school students,” Ward says. “It’s a great way to see if it’s for you before taking a minicamp, a summer camp, or joining an adult group.” There’s a paddling team of 120 members that would be more than happy to have new members, she points out. One of the park’s most noteworthy aspects, though, is its reputation for being the best racing course in the nation. Because of that, Olympic trials and world championships have been held there, and teams travel thousands of miles just to use this facility. “It’s because there’s a consistent three-and-a-half-meter depth along the entire 2,000-meter course,” Ward explains, “plus there’s the area to the north of it where you can turn and go back down the channel. Basically, you’re looking at

about a mile and half of water that is consistent over 10 lanes. There’s also the floating concrete wave attenuator that looks like a breakwall down the middle of the lake, which keeps the waves from becoming a problem. That keeps the course fair and navigable.” Ward notes that in Princeton, N.J., they have to hold heats as a way to determine which boat gets which lanes. “This is pretty common across the entire country. That’s because some lanes are better than others, because inconsistent water depth has a huge effect on rowing and the pressure on the oars. Here, we don’t have to race for lanes because they’re all equally set.” Nate Benderson Park also has the widest course anywhere. When the high school championships begin in March, you’ll see eight or nine boats starting at the same time—you won’t find that anywhere else. They can also run regattas more quickly, thanks to a return channel

that moves boats off the course and around to recovery docks, rather than back down the course as if they raced on a river. This frees up the course for the next race right away. Often, as boats are finishing one heat, another heat has already started. So, if you want to get into boat racing as a fan or participant, Nathan Benderson Park is a can’t-miss place to go. But if you don’t want to get into boat racing, the park is still a great place for singles, couples, or families to visit because it has something for everyone, from walkers and runners to cyclists, anglers, and casual paddlers. The Wilder Heart of Florida: More Writers Inspired by Florida Nature, published last year by the University of Florida Press, brings together many of the Sunshine State’s notable authors, poets, and environmentalists to take readers along a journey through the natural wonders of the state. The lineup is impressive, featuring such contributors as New York Times bestselling author Lauren Groff, U.S. Presidential Inaugural poet Richard Blanco, Miccosukee elder Buffalo Tiger, and others who bring insight and expertise to the Florida landscape. Bruce Stephenson The book has inspired the first full-day event at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Ringling College—set for Friday, March 11, 9am-5pm—called Celebrating Florida’s Wild Wonders. “This book is all about love—of Florida, of place, of nature,” says Leslie K. Poole, an associate professor of Environmental Studies at Rollins College who edited the volume along with Dr. Jack Davis. Certainly, the Sarasota area attracts folks because of its beauty—the beaches, the bay, the rivers, and the forests.” She herself is one of the event’s speakers, and she’ll be sharing the origin of The Wilder Heart of Florida and her own essay on the Disney Wilderness preserve, “which in no way is true wilderness, but is a very valuable place in nature that not only feeds the soul, but also is an important part of the Everglades system. I’ve been going there for twenty-five years with my family, and I take students there on field trips as well. When we put our hands into Lake Russell, we are touching water that will eventually flow through the Everglades system. I think that is remarkable.” “People think visually,” says Julie Cotton, one of the event organizers, “so we’re using a lot of visual art and artists as a part of this event. We’re going to have film, poetry, and stories. We also have an architect and a native plant designer—you name it, we have it.” Yes, they were looking for people who knew Florida, 92

but they also wanted people who were great presenters to make the event as exciting and interactive as possible. One of the speakers that Cotton is personally excited about is Jean Blackburn, a third-generation Floridian who grew up on Anna Maria Island, and who has taught Fine Arts at New College, Ringling College of Art and Design, and the University of Oregon. Blackburn’s art has been heavily inspired by the native plants, animals, and landscapes of Florida. Her parents have been preparing her to take care of herself, find a husband, and build a family—and now she has additional exciting possibilities ahead thanks to UnidosNow. Through the Future Leaders Academy of Girls (FLAG) program at UnidosNow, this little girl and her elementary school classmates have been learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career opportunities. Exposed to robotics and coding, the girls recently formed a team and participated in the first robotics competition in Southwest Florida. Look out world—academic opportunities abound! With help from the UnidosNow Future Leaders Academy—a comprehensive college prep and career readiness program that primarily serves low-income, first-generation Hispanic/Latino students—local youth are gaining admission to technical/vocational schools, two-year community colleges, and four-year universities. Some are even winning scholarships to competitive universities such as Duke and Harvard.

BUILDING THE FUTURE Immigrants often struggle to achieve the American Dream, and UnidosNow is working to make their path easier. The organization’s name is a blend of Spanish and English, meaning “United Now”—denoting a fusion of cultures, community building, and changing the landscape. The 10-year-old, not-for-profit organization has opened doors through education, integration, and civic engagement in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Former Sarasota mayor Kelly Krischner, co-founder and current board chair of UnidosNow, spent over four years living and working in Central and South America for the Peace Corps and USAID. Sensitive to the history and challenges faced by the immigrant population upon arrival in this country, he encouraged Luz Corcuera—a Peruvian immigrant herself—to become executive director of the young organization. She assumed the leadership role in 2016. 94

“She’s a dynamo/powerhouse and has moved UnidosNow forward with great determination and energy,” says Krischner. “We want to be a part of that fabric of that (American) culture, and also not lose our identity,” Corcuera explains. “We are proud of who we are. But at the same time, we recognize that we are preparing the leaders of tomorrow.” Corcuera has received recognition in the Manasota region for building strong relationships with private, public, faith-based, and civic organizations to close the education achievement gap, reversing negative health trends, and empowering people to civic integration. Because Latinos are now the largest minority group in the United States and poised to become the majority, UnidosNow offers multifaceted programs to ensure future leaders are ready for the challenge. “The students and

REMEMBERING ELIZABETH “LIZ” LINDSAY By Julie Milton I first met the remarkable Liz Lindsay when my dear friend, Karen Koblenz, became CEO of The Exchange (formerly the Woman’s Exchange). Liz was a co-founder of The Exchange in 1962 and she remained a driving force behind its success throughout her life. Since inception, The Exchange has donated more than $9 million in student scholarships and grants to arts and cultural organizations. Her vision for this business that keeps on giving, is an important part of the fabric and success of our community. We were in a social setting at our first meeting, and I marveled at her stamina, sharpness, and quick wit. She was in her mid-80s then. It didn’t take me long to see that Liz was a strong and smart lady with a gentle and kind soul. I instantly took a liking to her. I would have the great pleasure of meeting Liz several more times during the next several years, so it was with sadness when I learned of her death on January 18, 2022. This community is so blessed for having Liz among its most ardent supporters. Her philanthropy extended to many important organizations and causes. Liz was in the first class of graduates in the University of South Florida’s Executive MBA program, and she was one of the University’s largest benefactors. Supporting the education of our youth so they could become valuable members of the community was very important to Liz. The list of organizations she supported since her arrival to Sarasota in 1948 is too long to list here, and I know she will be fondly remembered in the hearts of many people for her amazing life of service and generosity.

Sarasota Scene had the opportunity to interview Liz Lindsay for its September 2012 issue. Here are some insightful questions and answers from that interview: What was the greatest thing your parents taught you? To be independent. My father, who was an engineer, encouraged me and told me I could do anything boys could do. Describe what you think the Woman’s Exchange means to Sarasota and in particular women? You must realize that women did not go into business ventures back then without the backing of their husbands and banks. I remember when we took out our first loan to buy our building. The banker asked if our husbands would guarantee it. I told them we wouldn’t do that, and you can accept this on the worth of the business. We’ve operated that way ever since. What is your advice for a good life? I guess it is to get involved. I was at lunch one day and I bumped into this beautifully dressed woman. She was complaining that she was bored, there was nothing to do in this town, and she probably wouldn’t stay. I just couldn’t understand that. There’s something for everyone to do that is creative, educational or philanthropic… After all is said and done, how do you want to be remembered? As a good citizen who cared about the community and helped it grow. And that is precisely how Liz Lindsay will be remembered.

MEET JIM WEAVER, WESTCOAST BLACK THEATRE TROUPE’S NEW EDUCATION DIRECTOR Sarasota is blessed to have a more robust live theater community than anywhere except the largest, most culturally vibrant cities. While the Van Wezel and Asolo Rep quickly come to mind, it’d be a serious oversight to assume that other theater organizations aren’t offering top-level events and educational programming, too. By way of example, look no further than Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT), which was started in 1999 by director and playwright Nate Jacobs. It’s the only professional Black theater company on Florida’s west coast, and one of only two in the entire state. Their mission is to produce professional theater that promotes and celebrates African American history and experience, engage a broad base of patrons and audiences, support the development of a dynamic group of aspiring artists, and build self-esteem in youth of color. Their commitment to the latter two goals is why they recently hired a new Education Director, Jim Weaver, a long-time partner of WBTT. “This is going back a few years,” Weaver admits, “but I started off as an actor and singer, and I wound up being cast in productions at Florida Studio Theatre.” That’s what initially got him down to Sarasota. From there, a fellow cast member introduced Weaver to Nate Jacobs, and the two hit it off. In 2006, Weaver was invited to direct Fences for WBTT. The match proved so successful that Jacobs brought him back to help the theatre in one way or another nearly every season since. Weaver has a lot to offer since he’s earned awards for his theatrical achievements that include appearing in numerous

on- and off-Broadway productions, along with a host of experiences in regional productions, cast albums, voiceover recordings, and TV. He also has an MFA in acting, which led him to become Director of Theater Studies for Kent State University at Stark. But academic bureaucracy wasn’t a great fit. Proposing an idea and waiting while it went through committee after committee—sometimes for more than a year—was frustrating. “Whereas at Westcoast,” he adds, “I can go to Julie (Leach), the executive director. Or I can go to Nate (Jacobs), the artistic director. And we’re on the same page right from the start. It’s a much more immediate way to get things done.” The new job also suited Weaver’s passion for education. When he was young, a lot of his own acting and dance classes were provided for free. “The idea that Nate has about making similar free opportunities and training (continued on page 100)

available to the students here was kismet. It was full circle for me,” Weaver says. “It also felt like I was coming home by being able to work with people that I already had a relationship with, and a history in terms of what I was doing directorially for them.” Weaver’s a big fan of WBTT’s Jazzlinks, an integrated arts experience that illustrates the role of African Americans in US history through music and theater. The Jazzlinks group perform at elementary, middle, and high schools, and they also respond in character to questions from the audience to make issues in history come alive. “Most recently, they did one dealing with the Harlem Renaissance,” Weaver explains, “so it featured jazz music and shared how that art form came about. I’m currently working on one about the civil rights movement called We Shall Overcome. It offers historical context to what happened in the 50s and 60s. We’re dealing with Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. We’ll even be reenacting the Woolworth Lunch Counter protest!” Another exciting WBTT program is Stage of Discovery, a summer musical theater intensive that’s provided

for free to kids 13-18. Professionals like Weaver and his colleagues teach the participants singing, acting, dancing, and improvisation. It culminates in a big public performance of a musical that’s always a crowd-pleaser. Since WBTT has a black box theater space—a basic indoor performance area suitable for all manner of performance or educational opportunities—Weaver wants to use it as a venue to offer a range of classes there to a wider audience. He’s thinking comedy, improv, and acting, but he’s open to other options as well, such as a high-powered acting seminar on the Stanislavski method, for instance. “I’m also hoping to incorporate a more intense dance program because right now, there’s kind of a focus on contemporary dance styles. In my thinking, if someone’s hoping to have a serious career in the business, we should offer them more foundational options—ballet, tap, jazz, modern.” One of the things that surprised Weaver in his new role is how hungry young people are to express their creative side. “Once they finally put the toe in, they open up— there’s this light that goes off inside of them,” he says.

And there are so many young people who want that opportunity, just like Weaver had when he was young. In short, it was an easy sell for WBTT to get Weaver to take on the role of Education Director/Artistic Associate. “Everybody at the company is 100%, behind the expansion of the education program, and they’re willing to take all the steps necessary to facilitate that,” he says. “This will allow a broader range of young artists to be able to come in and receive the training and the experience. Being part of that is fulfilling and exciting. I’m so glad to be here.”

NINA K CULLEN Croatia-born Nina Kolarek-Cullen knew at an early age that her life would follow in the direction of art, design, and fashion. She took her talent to new levels with education in Switzerland and London at the American College of Design, earning a Bachelor of Fine Art degree. Her fashion illustrations were featured in trendy London fashion publications and, after completing her studies, she moved to New York City where she found the energy not just exciting, but embracing. She rose to prominence as a fashion designer with her own Nina K women’s line and won the “Rising Star Award” from the National Fashion Association. Her creations appeared in numerous films and on television and were worn on air by newscasters and hosts. Upon moving to Southern California in the 1990s, she focused her talent and ambition on creating her art as a full-time career, painting large abstract expressionistic oil paintings. Galleries and collectors quickly took notice. A love of color, design, and texture informs her work, along with inspiration from the kaleidoscope of colors found in nature. She has developed her own technique of applying thick layers of oil paint with a palette knife to achieve rich textures and dimensions. Each piece takes several weeks, requiring layers of paint and glossy glazes that build on each other and complete the journey to achieving her vision. To Cullen, the act of painting is a burst of passion that sweeps over the expanse of canvas, vibrating with a sense of color magnetism. InHEALTH COLORECTAL CANCER IS LARGELY PREVENTABLE. SO WHY IS IT KILLING 50,000+ A YEAR? By Avantika Mishra, MD, Board-Certified Gastroenterologist

If you could decrease your chance of getting cancer by 90 percent, would you? Colorectal cancer is highly preventable through timely screening, yet it remains the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates colorectal cancer will kill more than 52,000 people this year and there will be about 150,000 new cases. Why is this? COLORECTAL CANCER IS A SILENT DISEASE Colorectal cancer often doesn’t trigger symptoms until later stages. And even then, the symptoms can be minor and similar to those caused by less deadly diseases. How do you know if blood after using the restroom is due to a hemorrhoid or something more serious? Or whether a stomachache or fatigue should cause concern? Err on the side of caution and, regardless of your age, talk to a gastroenterologist immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms: • Blood in/on stool • Change in bowel habits • Unexplained weight loss • Change in shape/size of stool • Anemia • Abdominal or rectal pain SCREENING CAN PREVENT COLORECTAL CANCER, BUT 30% OF AMERICANS AREN’T GETTING SCREENED Screening is leading way to prevent colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer usually starts out as a polyp in the lining of the colon or rectum. These polyps are common, affecting between 15 and 40 percent of adults. They are usually benign, and your gastroenterologist can spot and remove them during a routine colonoscopy. If polyps are not removed, however, there is a chance that they can progress to invasive cancer. This change occurs over time and is more likely as the polyps increase in size. 1 10

That’s why timely screening is crucial. Gastroenterologists can help prevent colorectal cancer through detecting and removing precancerous growths. And if the polyp is already cancerous, they can identify it at an earlier stage when treatment is less with an increased likelihood for success. SO EVEN IF YOU DON’T HAVE SYMPTOMS, GET SCREENED STARTING AT AGE 45 In 2021, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force announced that routine screening for colorectal cancer should begin at age 45 instead of 50. These updated guidelines are due to a worrisome increase in colorectal cancer for those under 50. While researchers are still unsure of what is causing this alarming trend, they do know that certain factors raise the risk of colorectal cancer including obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, as well as alcohol and tobacco use. Average-risk adults in good health should start screening at age 45 and continue regularly as recommended by their gastroenterologist. Those at high risk should talk to their physician about starting screening even earlier. WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE (Wednesday Books, January 2022) by Emma Lord In Emma Lord’s latest, When You Get the Chance, NYC teen diva Millie Price dreams of a big Broadway career, but she has things in her way. A worried (but lovable) single-parent dad who parents her with the help of his sister, Aunt Heather. Oliver, a drama club rival. And her own “Millie Moods,” which strike at the worst times. When Millie gets accepted into an out-of-state precollege program for the performing arts at the end of her junior year of high school, her dad says no. They live walking distance from Broadway! Why should she ever leave home? The solution is finding the perfect ally to convince Dad to sign off on the precollege program. Who better than her absent mom, because one of the few things Millie knows about her is that she LOVES musical theater. Now Millie just needs to find her. Thankfully, a tech nerd buddy is able to give her three leads from a long-ago LiveJournal post her dad wrote. The potential moms: a social worker; an executive assistant of a famous Broadway agent who’s also a struggling actress; and a very talented dance teacher. Which one is Millie’s mom? And will she turn out to be all Millie hoped for? It’s a very sweet book that will keep readers smiling and rooting for Millie, who’s a very likable character. The relationship between her and her father, too, is well wrought (says this father of two teen daughters). Lord is a New York Times bestselling writer for good reason, and this book demonstrates that in full. It’s a fun read.

SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND (Bloomsbury YA, January 2022) by David Valdes There’s no more apt way to say it—David Valdes’ new novel, Spin Me Right Round, is an LGBTQ+ retelling of the classic 1980s movie Back to the Future. In this version, all Luis Gonzalez wants is to attend prom with his boyfriend, but the school isn’t as progressive as it appears to be. And there’s the always-there story of Chaz Wilson, a gay kid who died on prom night back when Luis’ parents were in high school. A BONK on the head zips Luis back to 1985 where he meets Chaz himself. But the past is treacherous—homophobes are in charge, and one of them is Gordo…Luis’ estranged father! Maybe there’s a chance for Luis to save Chaz, which just might have cause/effect ripples through history that could change the present so he can go to prom with his partner. Ultimately, this story is far more amusing than one might expect given the seriousness of the themes, with a dash of silliness along the way. And Luis is a gay Cuban character with a big, big heart who deserves to go to prom with whomever he chooses.

RYAN’S RATING: www.davidvaldeswrites.com ANATOMY: A LOVE STORY (Wednesday Books, January 2022) by Dana Schwartz Dana Schwartz’s new novel, Anatomy, is set in Scotland 1817. Hazel Sinnett simply yearns to be a doctor—and that’s outlandish in this place and time since the proper role for women is marrying men, having babies, and caring for children. For Hazel, that’s the worst future possible. So, she puts on her dead brother’s clothes and becomes “George” to attend medical lectures. When she’s finally caught, she’s given one chance to pass the Physician’s Exam or she’ll be booted from the profession for good. All she needs are dead bodies to practice on, and she’s just met Jack Currer, a resurrection man who digs up corpses for a living. There are plenty of other plot elements in play here because Jack’s friends are disappearing, the Roman Fever has struck again after a thousand years of dormancy, and there are secrets buried in the cemeteries. If anything, there might be too many things going on at once such that we don’t get as much of Hazel’s or Jack’s backstory as some readers might desire.

Yet make no mistake—this YA historical gothic tale has mystery and thrills aplenty. You also get a lot of interesting information on the history of surgery, body snatching, and Edinburgh the city. It’s a good, fast read that has a hint of romance, though beyond a little smoochery, the primary romance is between Hazel and her career. If you like gothic historical fiction, alternating points of view, Scotland, and/or murder mysteries, this book is likely to put a smile on your face.
