he holiday season is fast approaching—quicker than I think any of us expected! Although we are all looking forward to many upcoming festivities, the gateway to “the holidays” in my eyes is Thanksgiving. Spending time with family and friends is precious and often results in a lifetime of memories.

I have been blessed not only to have enjoyed wonderful family time, but also to be part of organizations and companies that stress family accommodation and participation. I am coming up on five years in this wonderful community and enjoy and extend invitations that have given me a wonderful sense of family, despite my children and sibling being hundreds to thousands of miles away.

I’ve mentioned before my fond memories of taking my children to see The Nutcracker around this time of year. Although my personal experience was at the Mississauga performance venue, Living Arts Center, The Sarasota Ballet does an annual performance of the holiday classic here in Sarasota to much critical acclaim. ‘Tis the season, as they say, to take advantage of the bountiful selection of festivities our great town has to offer, many of which are listed in our Seasonal Event Calendar and our 2022-2023 Social Season Planner later in this issue. Mark your calendars, as gala season is gearing up—I know I’m excited!

In fact, my season has already started in earnest with traditional kick-off events. With Selby Garden’s opening event, themed by Orchids and spooky lights, the Lights at Spooky Point was a boo -tiful showcase. The Sarasota Opera Curtin Raiser, and many performing arts opening nights, have also been a hit, and a precursor to what I’m sure will be another great season.

I am looking forward to many events this coming month as well, including Forty Carrots’ Wine Women and Shoes. Be prepared to be entertained! As I’ve mentioned in my previous letters, I am a soleman at this event and by the time you read this column I will have approached many of you with a wine order form. Please remember it is terrific wine and proceeds go to a great cause. If I have not connected with you, please reach out to me and I will be happy to sing the praises of Forty Carrots, answer any questions, and especially pleased to take your order. It would be the perfect gift for the holidays!

We also showcase a selection of other potential gifts for your loved ones from local businesses and vendors, as well as some commentary from Shelly’s Gift and Christmas Boutique’s owner, Michelle Witzer, who offers a variety of gifts and trends offered at her iconic purple shop on 41. If you’re focusing on giving experiences instead of giving things this year, we’ve also collected a handful of breathtaking “winter

wonderland” travel destinations with the help of Malaka Hilton at Admiral Travel. Be sure to visit them before they melt—literally, the Ice Hotel actually melts every year and is rebuilt as a new design annually! How cool is that?

What the holiday season really reminds me of is food— more specifically, my mother’s favorite holiday recipe: A Mont Blanc dessert. My mother passed away several years ago, but my daughter, Brianna, has kept up the tradition of preparing it during the Christmas season. Her experience in making it goes back almost thirty years and she is only 31 years old. There is an emotional component to this very simple recipe. Brianna and Grany were a baking duo that started when she was two. A marang pie crust is backed on a cookie sheet and slid onto a 15-inch glass plate. Chestnut cream is spread on top in a thickish layer. (It was not always the easiest ingredient to get – my mother would pick it up when she saw it regardless of the season.) Next was to spread a layer of freshly whipped cream on the chestnut filling and then sprinkle with quality chocolate shavings. Refrigerate and serve.

I would love to hear some of your favorite recipes as well. Next month our Scene Snaps theme is “Treasured Holiday Memories,” and I’m excited to share in the festive feature with you all.

Lastly, I’d like to mention my thoughts to those who were touched in the destruction of Hurricane Ian. Although I personally lucked out, there were many who weren’t so fortunate. Scene will be running a feature on “Hurricane Heroes” in our next issue, and we are currently taking nominations for people and groups who went above and beyond during and after the hurricane to keep people safe and comfortable in the midst of the chaos. Please send your stories to editor@scenesarasota.com , subject “Hurricane Heroes”.

Stay safe, stay merry, and whoever you are, wherever you are, enjoy the social Scene.

PROVIDING HOPE & HEALING

FOR CHILDREN

In 1986, Graci McGillicuddy was reading a newspaper article about a 20-month-old child who died after being brutally abused by her mother and stepfather. “My own mom and dad were the most amazing, loving parents. They were wonderful and protective,” Graci says. “So, the thought of somebody doing that to a child was unfathomable. For me, learning about this tragedy was life changing.”

When Graci’s birthday arrived, she told her husband, Dennis, that instead of getting presents she wanted to donate money to an organization that was doing something about child abuse. Together, that’s what they did, and from that point on, Graci found a new purpose in life—preventing child abuse and providing care, support, and treatment for these vulnerable children.

Like so many members of the local philanthropist community, Graci has no interest in leaving behind money. “I want to make a difference with it. I want to see

where it’s going and what good it’s doing.” Financially supporting the effort to prevent child abuse was just the beginning of all the good she’s accomplishing.

Graci soon joined the Board of Directors of the Sarasotabased Child Protection Center in their “tiny little office on Main Street” because their mission was in alignment with her new goals as a child advocate. She quickly learned firsthand what Dr. Robert Block, a former president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, has claimed: “Adverse childhood experiences are the single greatest unaddressed public health threat facing our nation today.” Graci realized that she had to fight child abuse locally, but she also wanted to act in ways that can be used elsewhere to improve the lives of the 420,000 kids who are in foster care throughout the US.

In 2008, Graci led a $6 million capital campaign to build a state-of-the-art Child Protection Center that aids in the child abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment. But

44 SARASOTA SCENE | NOVEMBER 2022 • PH i LA nt HR o PY •

helping achieve that landmark wasn’t enough. She wanted to address an equally pressing need—creating a safe place for traumatized children to be loved and nurtured. That began her dream of creating a home where children could benefit from science-based, trauma-informed care in a safe, secure environment.

During this time, Graci helped create the Sarasota Sports Foundation, which held tennis and golf tournaments to raise money for different organizations that worked to prevent child abuse and support victims. She began to focus her efforts on supporting that organization, which was renamed the All Star Children’s Foundation by this point. Before long, it became clear to her that this was the pathway forward to creating a groundbreaking campus that could become the foster care model for the rest of the world.

Instead of sitting back and leisurely enjoying their golden years, Graci and Dennis tirelessly spearheaded

a $17 million capital campaign to create the All Star Children’s Foundation’s Campus of Hope and Healing for abused and neglected children in foster care. While the campus officially opened in November 2021, sheer need required them to begin accepting foster children the prior summer.

Today, the completed campus at 17th Street and Lockwood Ridge in Sarasota houses a 13,000-square foot pediatric mental health and treatment center, six licensed familystyle foster homes, a clubhouse, lots of green space with vegetable and butterfly gardens, a playground, an outdoor movie theater, and a lot more. In short, it’s the ideal environment for children to be after experiencing trauma.

“It’s such a bright, welcoming place,” Graci says in that special way that grandparents use to talk about their grandkids. “The Florida legislature and three governors have been phenomenal in their support for all of this. I

NOVEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 45

feel so blessed because nobody can do it alone. I’m so grateful we’re doing the work that I’ve been wanting to do. We’re really helping kids here.”

Now that the campus is celebrating its first anniversary, Graci is encountering success story after success story. “I see them when they come in, and then I watch the transformation that brings new light to their eyes. It’s just beautiful.” She says that the love people feel in the room with those kids is palpable.

“These kids have been betrayed by people who are supposed to care for them,” Graci explains. “I used to think they were bad people, but they’re just adults who are doing what was done to them. We need to heal the parents and be supportive of them, too. That’s how you break the cycle of abuse since so many of the birth parents are people who have been impacted by trauma themselves.”

To make that happen, “bio parents” receive support and treatment when they come to campus to read to their children at night or put them to bed or help fix dinner. That helps make the transition seamless. Everyone involved is getting the support they need in a structured, safe environment.

As All Star Children’s Foundation enters its second year of existence, it continues to transform foster care through innovation, science, and compassion. Graci notes how compassionate, and mission-driven their team is, and how much the clinical and campus teams—led by All Star’s

Chief Programs Officer, psychologist Kristin Hoffman, PhD, formerly of Johns Hopkins, as well as the other leaders—are directly involved in serving each child. “Even our Chief Development Officer, Stephen Fancher, sets aside time each week to teach music to the kids!” she notes. “The team’s commitment was evident during Hurricane Ian, when board member and interim CEO Noah Riner as well as several staff members spent the night on the campus to provide support to our children and families.”

The very next night after the hurricane, three children were brought to the campus after being removed from their home. Upon experiencing the safe and beautiful campus and the kindness of the foster parents, one child was deeply impressed, saying, “Wow, I get to actually stay here?” The child’s feeling reflected the mission of All Star, providing a place for healing to begin.

Graci invites everyone to get involved because the need is there, and science-based, trauma-informed care works. It just takes a place like the All Star Children’s Foundation to give children back their power in a culture of caring where they’re safe, valued, and supported—like ALL children should be.

Bill and Jan Farber and The Sarasota Ballet

When Bill and Jan Farber decided to move to Florida from New York City, they set a very high bar for what their future city of residence would be required to have.

“We were spoiled with the Metropolitan opera—the art institutions, and all that New York City offered culturally,” Bill said. “Being used to very grandiose productions, we needed to live in a city that would match that. Sarasota offered those same types of activities. As the arts capital of the West Coast of Florida, it really was the only city in Florida that could have worked for us.”

“Sarasota has a unique vibe,” Jan added. “We noticed it when we first moved here. People seem very happy and pleasant. Living here is a very positive experience.”

After making their move here four years ago, Bill and Jan began to sample the various art institutions in Sarasota, attending different shows and performances. That’s when they discovered The Sarasota Ballet.

“When we got to the ballet, lo-and-behold, suddenly we felt like we were in New York City,” Bill said. “It lived up to everything we hoped we would find in a cultural arts institution in Sarasota. We were blown away by the artistry and the quality of the productions, and we fell in love with it.”

This was long before the Farbers became major donors. They first got to experience the ballet by regularly attending performances, then they began getting more involved. Jan, a former professional chef and caterer, became a member of The Sarasota Ballet’s Advisory Council, and Bill, a lawyer by trade who has spent his entire career in

the commercial real estate business, became a member of the Board of Trustees. Getting involved like this gave them more of a sense of the ballet family and community.

On the advisory council, Jan helps explore how to get people more engaged who only buy tickets once in a while. It’s a regular goal of the ballet to bring people back to enjoy more performances and participate beyond buying tickets. They welcome people at all levels.

According to Bill, being involved as a donor is not just for people who have lots of money to give away, it’s more than that. “It’s the inside experience, that’s what you get. They make you part of the group,” he said. “You almost feel like you’re part of the company in a way. The way that they engage you and draw you in…in an extremely intimate way…you’re given an opportunity to have dancers in your home, to be on a first name basis with the performers. It’s very special.”

“You can see how they relate to one another like a happy bunch of college kids.” Bill said. “When you’re with them on that level, you almost forget they’re super athletes and amazing human beings. They are not like the rest of us in many ways.”

One of the biggest ways of interacting is being a Friday night subscriber and going to the after performance parties, where all the dancers show up. There are often

NOVEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 49 • PH i LA nt HR o PY •

brunches, lunches, and dinners offered for specific Sarasota Ballet donors. The Farbers often have a dancer or two at their table.

“These are kids we know and enjoy talking with.” Bill said. “In New York City, you have as much chance of getting on a first-name basis with a dancer there as the man on the moon.”

Bill and Jan will also be hosting a dinner for 35 patrons of the ballet at their home in November and the couple hope to host many more. Because they still own their home in New York City, when The Sarasota Ballet performed at the Joyce Theater, they attended the after-party of a matinee performance at a restaurant in Chelsea. Knowing The Sarasota Ballet has connections to where they came from is especially exciting for them.

“One of the dancers, Richard House, had family there visiting from Australia,” Jan said. “It was just so much fun talking to them. Not only do you get a chance to chat with dancers, but to meet their family. That was a really unique experience.”

Though Bill and Jan don’t have a background in ballet, Bill has always had “a long abiding love of classical music.” The two attend all performances throughout the entire season and participate in other activities, both business and social.

Jan, who has a degree in art history, points out that learning any form of the arts, whether it’s painting, music, dance, or pottery—greatly enhances your understanding of what the artist or the performer is doing. When she’s looking at paintings at the Ringling, or at a gallery downtown, Jan feels she has more of an understanding of what went into making that artistic piece. Having an opportunity to watch a rehearsal at The Sarasota Ballet also gives insights into what it takes to put the whole performance together.

“When you watch the dancers rehearsing, you’re just awestruck at the stamina and grace and coordination,” she said. “How do they do that hour after hour? It’s mind boggling!”

According to Jan, just attending a ballet performance can change how you feel physically.

“Just last night, we had a group of neighbors over for a potluck supper, and I was talking to someone who also likes

to go to the ballet. And he said ‘you know the greatest thing is when you walk out of the ballet, you are just uplifted,’” she said. “When you see a performance, you have that same feeling. You don’t always get that from other kinds of performances. What could be better for a community than hundreds of people leaving a performance feeling uplifted?”

Bill says he often gets chills, watching the dancers when they’re doing a synchronized performance in unison, thinking of the pressure they’re under.

“To know you have to be absolutely in sync while hundreds of people are watching you, having all those steps memorized, with such complicated routines—the stamina, strength, coordination, and musical talent…ballet is a complicated, multifaceted thing. And then, many times, you have to be an actor playing a part in a story on top of that.”

The sense of awe and joy the couple gets from the rehearsals and performances is something they never tire of, and they don’t plan on slowing down any time soon.

The couple looks forward to continuing indefinitely as major donors and hopes to continue their active involvement as members respectively of the Board of Trustees, the Advisory Council, and the Friends of the Sarasota Ballet.

In her spare time, Jan enjoys cooking, reading, and walking on the beach. Bill spends his free time on cars, boating, sailing, and classical music appreciation. Their favorite performance they’ve seen at The Sarasot a Ballet is A Comedy of Errors

Now that they’re planted here for good, Bill and Jan are thankful to have found an organization that adds immense value to this city’s reputation for outstanding arts culture. They’re proud to be involved both through volunteering, and financially, as donors.

“At the end of the day, what you get from the ballet is tremendous gratitude and acknowledgement for anything you do,” Bill said.

University of South Florida’s 28th Brunch on the Bay

52 SARASOTA SCENE | NOVEMBER 2022

While this area is fortunate to have a host of philanthropic opportunities and events, few match the uniqueness of University of South Florida’s Brunch on the Bay, which is the campuses’ signature community event. Since 1994, the University of South Florida has invited community supporters to the grounds of the Sarasota-Manatee campus to enjoy some of the best local cuisine while learning about—and investing in—student scholarships. To date, Brunch on the Bay has raised more than $6.5 million, which includes a record-setting $450,000 last year.

In total, more than 2,000 students have benefited from the amazing generosity of USF friends and supporters who’ve attended this annual event over the years.

This year’s Brunch on the Bay happens from 11:30am to 1:30pm on Sunday, November 6 at the USF SarasotaManatee campus. In addition to scholarships, this year’s Brunch on the Bay will support a next level of exciting initiatives, including construction of a new Nursing/STEM building on the Sarasota-Manatee campus.

“This will be a building where ideas can be celebrated and grown, solutions discovered, and better answers can be generated for many of the most challenging issues faced by our society, in general, and our community, in particular,” says Dr. Karen A. Holbrook, regional chancellor of the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. “It will be an economic engine for our region.”

NOVEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 53

The $62 million facility will double the size of the campus’s nursing program, increase new majors in health disciplines and other programs, and fill the need on campus for teaching and clinical labs and research facilities.

The 130,00-square-foot Crosley Campus Center has been the school’s home since 2006, and while it served the academic community well, the extraordinary growth in enrollment and programs has outgrown it. Brunch on the Bay will be a key part in addressing the need for campus expansion.

Returning as this year’s title sponsor is long-time supporter USF Federal Credit Union, which has eight branches throughout the Tampa Bay region, and recently opened a branch in Sarasota on Clark Road. They provide philanthropic contributions and support for many USF events and initiatives. Richard J. Skaggs, president of the USF Federal Credit Union adds that “we are honored to return as the Brunch on the Bay title sponsor and to support student success and the expansion of USF’s

Sarasota-Manatee campus as it grows along with the community.”

The Brunch on the Bay chair changes each year— sometimes they’re alumni, and sometimes they’re USF donors, such as Elizabeth Moore who ran it last year. This year’s event is co-chaired by USF alumnae Dr. Mona Jain and Dr. Anila Jain, a mother-daughter duo who are both members of USF’s Women in Leadership & Philanthropy program where they mentor and support USF students.

A lifelong educator, Dr. Mona Jain, is a Fulbright scholar, winner of USF’s Distinguished Alumna Award and 2020 recipient of the College of Education’s Dean’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Her daughter, Dr. Anila Jain, is a physician and medical consultant who serves as vice chair of the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus board. While she’s earned many awards and distinctions related to USF, she was also one of the first supporters of Brunch on the Bay, which makes her work as this year’s co-chair especially appropriate.

54 SARASOTA SCENE | NOVEMBER 2022

In addition to USF’s plans to build a Nursing/STEM building, on Sept. 14, the State University of Florida System Board of Governors unanimously approved building a new housing and student center complex just west of Crosley Campus Center. By the fall of 2024, as many as 200 students will for the first time be able to live on campus. The $39 million, 100,000-square-foot building will transform the look of the campus, as well as the college experience for students. “This building is a top priority for all of USF, and we are grateful for the support our president, Rhea Law, the USF Board of Trustees, and the Board of Governors,” shares Holbrook.

“USF is growing here in Sarasota-Manatee,” explains Holbrook. “Behind every great community like ours is a great institution like the Sarasota-Manatee campus. We are expanding for the success and sustainability of our community.”

Come out and support a good cause and be part of the amazing event that is Brunch on the Bay. Visit sarasotamanatee. usf.edu/brunch to learn more.

RICHARD RUSSELL

Celebrates 30 years with the sarasota opera

Richard Russell caught the opera bug at an early age, way back in the fifth grade, when his teacher first introduced him to it. He was involved in his school’s music program and felt a pull towards music and performance from as far back as he can remember. Russell’s mother was a professional jazz singer and pianist, so musical talent ran in the family.

Growing up just outside New York City, Russell asked his mother to take him to an opera. After seeing his first opera performance in person, Russell was hooked. Little did he know that one day he’d be the Executive Director of a world class venue, The Sarasota Opera.

“I think it was the passion of the music that I was drawn to,” Russell said. “It really gets you right in the gut.”

While other kids his age were playing sports, watching TV, and riding bikes—Russell became a regular subscriber at The New York City Opera, taking the bus into New York City for Saturday matinee performances.

“It was quite unusual for a kid that age,” Russell said. “The teachers encouraged us to experience opera and would take us to dress rehearsals at The Met ropolitan Opera, but my peers were not interested in opera at all.”

When he was in high school and old enough to get a driver’s license, Russell drove into New York City himself to see the opera.

“The all-encompassing nature of the art form—great music, sets, and costumes…” he said. “Being a performer and loving the pageantry of being onstage and all of that…it was very important to me.”

Those early beginnings led him to become an opera singer himself. After earning both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in voice performance and choral conducting, Russell began pursuing singing as a career. One of his first jobs was at the Sarasota Opera, where he worked up through four seasons in the studio artist program, and then as a principal. As he was forging a path forward, Russell took temporary jobs on the side to earn enough to live. Around that time, he realized physical problems were forcing him to take a hiatus from singing and he chose to go into a different career—joining Citigroup’s Emerging Markets Sales and Trading group. It wasn’t long before he was promoted there as Vice President.

But the world of opera kept calling his name, and after twelve years at Citigroup, he came back to the Sarasota Opera, working as the Director of Marketing for five years

before becoming the General Director of Opera New Jersey in Princeton. Two years later, he was back in Sarasota, this time as the Executive Director.

According to Russell, in the opera world, the traditional role of executive director is solely administrative and involves running the company, fundraising, marketing, and finance, and the position of an opera’s artistic director is to focus more on the artistic side, while both act as CEOs. Although most opera companies have moved away from this model, at the Sarasota Opera, Russell and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Victor DeRenzi chose to keep things running as a dual CEO-style structure. Russell is in charge of the administrative side, and DeRenzi directs the artistic side, though there is a lot of overlap. This setup allows them both to be involved in each other’s roles, maximizing the positive results of working together.

Both Russell and DeRenzi do auditions together, as well as selecting operas for each season. Operas are chosen carefully keeping financial needs in mind, as well as artistic ones. It’s a fine art of balancing popular operas with less popular ones that may sell fewer tickets. Each opera’s cost is also different because the components that make it a production are different.

“We work on it together so we can achieve the right balance and do it in a financially responsible manner.” Russell said.

Meeting financial needs is a regular challenge. Ticket sales don’t cover the costs of producing an opera, so contributions are vital. Since coming on as Director ten years ago, Russell has increased individual giving to the Sarasota Opera by over 50%, as well as doubling their endowment.

As a man with a keen business sense and sharp marketing skills, Russell is quick to share the credit with others.

“I didn’t do it all myself,” he said. “I have a great team, I have had great development directors, and we are in a great philanthropic community.”

Russell also spearheaded a major move for the company recently by negotiating and purchasing 30,000 handmade, and historically authentic costumes. This not only added a wealth of resources to their collection, but it provided an avenue to protect the opera’s costs, preserve the priceless costume collection (the other bidder planned to disassemble and use them as Halloween costumes), and generate revenue. They now rent them out to other opera companies and productions throughout North America.

Sarasota Opera’s production of Turandot (2019) by Rod Millington

One of the recent companies they rented the costumes to was Kia Motors, for a TV commercial.

Looking back after the past few challenging seasons of the pandemic, Russell points out that they were the first opera company in the U.S. to open up for indoor performances during COVID. They were able to keep both the performers and the audience safe, while keeping their staff working.

“I am especially proud of the way we came through COVID,” he said. “When it first hit, we didn’t know what the future held, but we put our heads down and found a safe way to reopen and still gave audiences what they wanted.”

As far as his future at the opera is concerned, Russell’s goals include continuing to make sure the company is financially stable, bringing audiences fully back, while also being more artistically innovative. A big part of this is through education about why opera is still important during modern times.

Though opera has been around since the 1500s, Russell says it’s still relevant today.

“I think it’s the way we tell stories,” he said. “The themes of an opera are the same stories we’re hearing in current days. Opera is about portraying human emotions and the human condition. It drives me a little crazy when people say they don’t relate to an opera that was set in the 1850s. It’s the same emotions, reactions, and things that humans are going through today.”

He often runs into people who tell him they don’t like opera. Russell’s response is to ask which opera they’ve seen, and that’s when they tell him they’ve never seen one.

“People can sometimes find the art form intimidating,” he said. “I try to alleviate those fears and make people comfortable. If

it‘s the language—we have translations going on above the stage, just like movie subtitles.”

He believes most people would be surprised if they gave opera a chance and attended a live performance.

“The one thing I like to say to people who have never experienced opera is to just try it.”

Just like Russell was encouraged by his teachers as a kid, he tries to do the same to inspire those in the community to be a part of the Sarasota Opera and all the upcoming performances in the season.

When he’s out and about, running errands or eating at a restaurant downtown, Russell says people come up to him all the time, recognizing him. A big part of what he does involves conversations and relationships he has in the community.

Russell makes a point to greet each guest as they exit the theater after a show. He also thrives on the creative energy that’s constantly exuded from the staff and performers at the opera. It’s one of his favorite parts about what he does.

“I love working with the artists, our staff, and the people involved in the company,” he said. “Being with our audiences and seeing their responses—I love watching their reactions.”

It’s a feeling he knows well, and he’s never forgotten.

“Opera lovers are the most addicted kind of fan,” he said. “They travel the world to see great performers. A lot of people get very passionate about opera, and opera lovers are the most passionate.”

INTERPRETING NATURE: CONSERVATION FOUNDATION OF THE GULF COAST

For years, the growing success of Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast’s robust youth programs had adults asking, “What about us? We want to explore and experience nature in fun and educational ways, too!” From those questions came the idea for a new Nature Interpreter position—a role which would offer the community new pathways to learn about, discover, and interpret the natural world, as well as appreciate how land and water conservation affects their day-to-day lives. “Quite simply,” says Foundation president Christine P. Johnson, “the goal is to connect people to nature and foster a deeper understanding of our natural world.”

Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast’s mission says it plainly: “We protect the land and water in Southwest Florida for the benefit of people and nature.” Johnson explains that knowing WHY that mission matters is crucial. It’s because it’s important to have a natural thriving world as well as a thriving built world. “We believe they can coexist if they are planned well. So, we envision a future where the built and unbuilt worlds of Southwest Florida can flourish together.”

NOVEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 89

After receiving funding for a one-year trial, Jenna Biggs was hired as Conservation Foundation’s first Nature Interpreter in May. An environmental educator for more than 15 years, Biggs has worked in the zoo, aquarium, and resort industries. “I’ve been getting people out into nature and helping them connect to it for a long time. I just love it,” she says.

What appealed to her about the Nature Interpreter opportunity was Conservation Foundation’s focus on mission and connecting people. “That’s the idea— connection,” Jenna notes. “Part of my role is to make nature memorable. When people have a memorable experience, they’re more likely to connect with nature and then, hopefully, want to protect it. By creating opportunities and giving participants space to learn and engage, we’re helping to grow more nature lovers.”

Johnson adds that from a leadership standpoint, the goal is for everyone to be invited to participate, from young children all the way to senior citizens. “It’s not a children’s program, though, so kids do need to be with adults, but it’s going to be spectacular for families as well as retirees and everybody else.” And most of the events and activities will be free, she adds.

Biggs is starting with Conservation Foundation’s existing audience, such as those who already attend the events, follow the organization on social media, and receive e-blasts. But she’s also looking to expand further into the community and reach a more diverse population.

Part of what made Biggs so successful in her previous roles is her ability to help people digest new information. “You can be a computer user without being someone who understands how to code. The same situation is true with nature. As a Nature Interpreter, I’m bringing it all to a level that’s understandable so people can connect with it. I have to make the experience engaging, funny, memorable. People might not ultimately remember the exact name of a specific plant, but they’re going to remember the story behind it and why it’s important.”

90 SARASOTA SCENE | NOVEMBER 2022
“We have such a far reach with our five counties now, yet I would love to keep building on existing programs and create brand new ones.”
• insi D e R •

Technology can play a big role in this, too, by bringing conservation and nature to your fingertips. Johnson explains that “we’ll share how to use your smartphone to identify plants, along with where to go to learn things like what kind of plants bring a certain kind of bird to your yard. We’ll make it simple by introducing you to easy-to-use tools, including many free apps that work with nature.”

The entire foundation is thankful for the support of Gulf Coast Community Foundation, which funded the Nature Interpreter position. The Harlan family also made a $15,000 donation to purchase program supplies and equipment such as night vision goggles, UV lights, glow-in-the-dark materials, and more, allowing Biggs to facilitate a wide range of activities. As a whole, the community has responded enthusiastically to the idea of a nature expert like Biggs living and working here so we can all learn a bit more about Florida Gulf Coast’s wildlife, waterways, and land.

Biggs believes in Maya Angelou’s famous quotation: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” She says that’s a good way to think about environmentalism, which is often something people feel they need to get perfect from the start. That sense of all-ornothing stops some people from even trying. “Don’t beat yourself up for your failures,” she explains. “Just keep trying to do better when you can. That’s how I live and work, as well.”

Biggs and Johnson realize that the majority of people who live here aren’t from here. That means they might not have familiarity with the natural world they live near or in. But Biggs is fully committed to finding ways to get everyone comfortable being outside. No more thinking, “Oh, I can’t go outside in the rainy season!” or “I don’t know what to do besides go to Siesta Key Beach!”

“We’re going to have a lot of fun,” Biggs promises. “And if you only take away one thing—and that’s the experience—that’s perfectly okay. We don’t want it to be overwhelming because it’s all about having a great time, experiencing something new, and maybe learning something along the way. That’s what it’s all about.”

Celebrating cinema THE RETURN OF THE CINE-WORLD FILM FESTIVAL

I am not shy with my opinion about the best way to see great cinema.

It’s not on a cell phone or tablet. It’s not by streaming on your TV in your jammies surrounded by the comforts of your home. And it’s especially not by watching it at home alone (sorry, Macaulay Culkin).

Great films should be seen in a movie theater—on the big screen, with your fellow citizens and cinephiles.

There is no better community experience where you can enjoy the laughs and tears together with your fellow film-loving neighbors than in the theatre.

A place where you can cover your eyes, move to the edge of your seat, and get into the plight of the protagonist. A setting where you take in the scenes together and in the end, decide if the story personally moved you or not. And finally—a place where you can sit in the dark without distractions and sometimes if you are lucky, sit in silence together

and let the whole movie-going experience wash over you.

I once asked the great actor, Sam Elliot, how he knew when the film was working. In his iconic and often imitated voice, he beckoned, “When I hear the silence in the movie theatre, I know that it’s working.”

Back in 2019, at the 30th Cine-World Film Festival, I took in the film Parasite in a crowded Burns Court Cinema. On that occasion, the film was really working. The silence was palpable as we all sat together, mostly in silence, as Bon Joon-Ho’s masterpiece blew most of us away.

Now, thankfully, films and movies are back after the pandemic. They are being played and shared as they were intended—on the big screen.

And, after a two-year hiatus, the Cine-World Film Festival is back, returning for the 31st time to the screens at Burns Court Cinemas in the Burns Court Historic District from November 11 through November 18.

This film event has been an important cultural part of this community ever since Sarasota Film Society founders, Dick and Sue Morris, envisioned their film dream many years ago. The President and Vice-President of The Sarasota Film Society, Renee Baggott and Trish Calandra, are anxious to screen:

“After a 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic, SFS is proud to present Cine-World Film Festival 2022. We are excited to bring the festival back to Burns Court Cinema and have our members and community be able to enjoy the theatrical release of these great films the way they were intended to be seen.”

One of the films they are most excited about is Louis Armstrong’s Black and Blues, which will be opening this year’s festival.

Calandra adds, “I am very much looking forward to seeing, as the music and life of Louis Armstrong is a fascinating story.”

Fascinating stories are something Josh Goodnough, the CIO/Program Director for the Sarasota Film Society is used to. He works behind the scenes to ensure that all the magical scenes are visible out front by the movie-going

public. Still, even he is a little excited about the upcoming return of the Cine-World Film Festival.

“I love that Cine-World is back because this gives me the opportunity to feel like I’m more of a movie fan back in the theater with like-minded individuals than just a person who’s in the film industry working behind the scenes to bring the festival together.”

Among the titles from around the world that Cine-World will be featuring at this year’s festival include the following:

• Living— a 2022 British drama film directed by Oliver Hermanus, set in London. depicting a bureaucrat (played by Bill Nighy) facing a fatal illness.

• Utama —a drama directed by Alejandro Loayza Grisi and was submitted by Bolivia as an entry for the 2023 Academy Awards for Best International Film.

• Framing Agnes —a Canadian documentary film, directed by Chase Joynt that examines transgender histories, centering on a cast of transgender actors reenacting various case studies from Harold Garfinkel’s work with transgender clients at the University of California, Los Angeles.

• The Cow Who Sang a Song into the Future —directed by Francisca Alegría and is released in Spanish with

NOVEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 93

English sub-titles displaying an environmental fable with elements of magical realism.

• The Forger—a German film Directed by Maggie Peren about a young man who won’t let anyone take away his zest for life, especially not the Nazis. In his quest to discover life, he has the misfortune of living as a Jewish person in Berlin in the 1940s.

Other films to be featured will include There, There, a romantic drama by Andrew Bujaiski; Chile 76, directed by Manuela Martelli; Hunt, a South Korean espionage action film directed by Lee Jung-Jae in his feature directorial debut; Afghan Dreamers, a documentary by David Greenwald and many others.

In keeping with the original mission statement and goal, the Cine-World Film Festival features the best international and independent films broadcasted on some of the most iconic film festival circuits including The Toronto International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, and Sundance.

The 2022 Cine-World Film Festival will close with Broker, a 2022 South Korean drama film directed and written by Hirokazu Kore-eda, revolving around characters associated with baby boxes, which allow infants to be dropped off anonymously to be cared for by others. It is just the kind of film that will invite spirited conversations and analysis from film fans and critics alike.

For over three decades, the Cine-World Film Festival has given area movie buffs a chance to see the finest of international cinema—taking in engaging stories filled with controversy, political intrigue, and cultural nuances. It has once again given Sarasota an opportunity to see great cinema on the big screen and most importantly, see the magic of cinema working.

A chance to sit in the dark—and yes, if you’re lucky, in silence—letting the frames wash over you. A time for the world to see cinema again. And a time to celebrate international and independent film at the 2022 Cine-World Film Festival.

meet the artists Janet Biggs

Two generation defining artists come together in their first collaborative show: Journeys to Places Known and Unknown: Moving Images by Janet Biggs and peter campus . Organized by Terrie Sultan, an independent curator and the former executive director of the Parrish Art Museum in Watermill, NY, this exhibition will be on view at Sarasota Art Museum until January 15, 2023.

Janet Biggs (b. 1959) is a research-based, interdisciplinary artist known for her immersive work in video, film, and performance. peter campus (b. 1937) is an influential artist in the canons of new media and video art. Beginning in the 1970s, peter campus pioneered the nascent medium of video and moving images as a way to make art.

Biggs and campus have long been interested in the threats of climate change and the impact of human activity on the environment. Biggs has filmed in some of the places most impacted by global warming on the planet, including the Taklamakan Desert, Afar Triangle, the Arctic, and Antarctica. campus’ work has focused exclusively on landscape since the 1980s, when he began collecting and photographing stones picked up on walks along Montauk Beach. For both artists,

looking to nature has enabled them to feel hope for the future and a connection to a wider community.

Together, they use moving images to explore intersections of science, philosophy, and spirituality. Biggs presents expansive, hauntingly beautiful tributes to humanity’s perseverance in intense situations; campus, meanwhile, offers quiet moments of meditation with his painstakingly constructed, painterly videographs.

Journeys to Places Known and Unknown is the outgrowth of a year of collaborative conversations between the artists and their exploring modes of perception, nature, memory, solitude, spirituality, and humanity’s impact on the natural world. Although their styles and approaches are different, this exhibition represents a cohesive look at both artists’ work and their use of moving images to change how we see the natural world.

“Journeys to Places Known and Unknown: Moving Images by Janet Biggs and peter campus” is on view at the Sarasota Art Museum October 16, 2022–January 15, 2023.

Regenerative dermatology refers to a field of innovative therapies that target skin aging, hair loss, wound repair and scar reduction through tissue regeneration and repair at the cellular level. The novel therapies include cytokine rich plasma, or CRP, and autologous cellular and acellular therapies that have high regenerative and restorative potential.

BIO s C alp, BIOFaCI al and regenerat I ve aesthet IC M ed ICI ne

Look no further than yourself for the source of this powerful therapeutic material. Accessible from a simple blood draw or minimally invasive procedure, your own powerful growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins can be used to effectively combat the multifactorial causes of hair loss and skin aging.

The goal is to deliver natural yet powerful material with regenerative potential to those areas susceptible to aging, sun damage, hormonal changes, and inflammation. One method is through a series of BioScalp injections, or IV infusions that target hair loss. The novel treatments can reverse the miniaturization process seen in male and female pattern baldness as well as inflammatory induced alopecia. BioScalp therapy with CRP boosts cellular signaling pathways to kick-start the hair to grow again to restore the natural density and fullness to the scalp.

Similarly, these innovative therapies target the harmful inflammatory molecules linked to premature aging. BioFacial therapies incorporate the restorative and regenerative material with readily available aesthetic techniques to boost cellular growth in the skin. Clinically, we see smoother texture and tone, decreased pore size, as well as volume restoration improving fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring. Overall, the skin achieves a more youthful glow.

Using patented and proprietary methods, we can provide higher concentrations of growth factors to combat the photodamage, aging and hair loss. Our processing technique creates a natural, protein-rich matrix to serve as a biological scaffold to hold the regenerative material at the treatment site for extended periods of time to achieve longer lasting and better results, requiring fewer treatments than standard PRP.

O pt IM al wO und heal I ng

The regenerative therapies also provide an optimal wound healing environment. For this reason, CRP/Matrix is often used alone or in conjunction with cellular or acellular therapies during dermatologic procedures, such as hair transplantation and other reconstructive surgeries, to result in scars that heal faster and appear less perceptible.

We even have the ability to incorporate your own growth factors in a take home serum to use as your everyday, personalized skin care regimen. You truly can channel your inner self for powerful restorative effects on your skin and hair all from a simple blood draw. The next time you consider anti-aging products or procedures, look no further than your mirror for the source of the innovative, regenerative material.

shades OF rust and ru I n : shades OF rust and ru I n #1 by A.G. Howard (Knopf, Sept 2022)

I’m already a fan of New York Times bestselling author A.G. Howard’s work. But when I saw the pitch for this one, I gave it a shot. Phoenix “Nix” Loring is suffering from a Halloween curse. Her whole family is, in fact. Her parents died tragically on that date when she was three, and her twin sister similarly died on Halloween a little over a decade later. Now Nix is unsurprising suffering from survivor’s guilt, and the one person she wants solace from—Clarey, her dead sister’s boyfriend—isn’t an option, since Nix has secret feelings for him.

All Nix has is her art abilities and the sketches she’s drawn for her imaginary world of Mystiquel. And one day, Nix experiences trauma-induced colorblindness, so even art becomes a source of pain.

Come Halloween day, her uncle goes missing, and both Nix and Clarey go to find him, which takes them through a portal that leaves them stuck in the dangerous, dark world of Mystiquel where Nix’s art has become a fearsome

reality. Those who like Christina Rosetti’s “Goblin Market” will see clear echoes and inspiration in this story.

This steampunky fantasy world is interesting and engaging, as is Howard’s writing. I’m also pleased by the inclusion of neurodiverse characters, a fairy tale atmosphere, and the cliffhanger-ish ending that sets up the next book in the series. Oh, did I mention there’s a Goblin King?

Go read this book.

The title grabbed me here—how do I NOT read a bit just to see if the story is as cool as the title, or its premise, which is a speculative historical noir thriller based on Shakespeare’s As You Like It . Gong herself says it’s “Chinese period drama meets Marvel movie.” She also promises that this first book of the new duology works well enough on its own for readers not to need to read the previous two books, These Violent Delights or Our Violent Ends

Well, the story of Foul Lady Fortune is pretty darn cool. It’s 1931 in Shanghai, and as the Japanese Imperial

Army is slowly encroaching upon China, Nationalist propaganda assassin Rosalind Lang (Code name: Fortune) is sent into action. Only Lang isn’t just any assassin—a medical experiment that saved her life a few years prior left her able to heal from any wound, along with no longer aging (she looks 19) or needing to sleep. Plus, she’s wracked with guilt over her past sins for betraying her own team in a way that nearly led to the destruction of Shanghai.

Lang’s goal is to find out who is committing a series of murders in Shanghai before more of her countryfolk

are killed. The Japanese are the likely suspects since they’re connected to a Japanese government funded newspaper. But are they really behind it? To help her cover, she poses as the wife of a fellow Nationalist spy, Orion Hong, whose playboy antics and easygoing attitude drive her bonkers.

Remember that in this period of Chinese history, a number of groups are vying to gain power over the fractured country. Nobody was sure of anyone else’s true loyalty. Double, triple, and quadruple agents were everywhere, and families quickly became split over political beliefs. To no one’s surprise, both Hong and Lang have their own secrets and private goals, too, which begin to emerge as they unravel more of the mystery behind all those murders.

When the plot twists hard at the ¾ mark, it’s seemingly a bit out of nowhere, but the banter between the two is good, and Rosalind’s Communist trans sister is a welcome addition to this plot. But look—you’ve got an exciting time period, a Shakespearean plot, and a spy+assassin fake marriage. What more do I need to say?

The book has plenty to admire. And while it’s got excitement and thrills, there’s some fun to be had here too.

last OF the talO ns : talO ns #1 by Sophie Kim (Entangled: Teen, Sept 2022)

I first learned about Sophie Kim’s debut novel, Last of the Talons , when a pair of my book-devouring friends got hold of advanced copies. They said to read it, so I did and here we are.

The story is that eighteen-year-old assassin Shin Lina belongs to the Talon street gang, only a mission-gone-wrong leaves all her pals dead. Worse, in her new goal of doing anything to keep her younger sister alive, Lina has to work for the person who runs a rival gang that caused the death of her fellow Talons. Along the way, she’s tasked with killing a deadly emperor in order to save her sister, only the more she learns about this powerful foe, the more she’s realizing that she’s falling for him.

While the book starts a bit slow and the characterization is hit-or-miss, Kim is doing a lot of things well with this story. The action is compelling (especially at the end), and the extensive worldbuilding that’s based on Korean myth and legend is quite effective.

Ultimately, fans of YA fantasy should give this series a trial run.
