The season will bring a greater number of events, galas, and performances—more than we have seen in a long time. I feel, though, like season may have started a bit earlier as we have already enjoyed so many wonderful events in September and October. But it’s November, and it’s official. Dust off your tuxedos, puff up the ball gowns, buy your seats, and mark your calendars! In this issue, themed “Tis the Season”, we provide a comprehensive calendar which will tell you everything you need to know about the Sarasota social season events. If you are new to the area, and don’t know about a charity, please look them up and learn more. The many calendar quotes from either organization CEOs, directors, or event chairs will hopefully sway you into action. And please don’t wait because many of these events sell out fast—they are red hot tickets for sure! Ladies, if you’re thinking about what to wear, please peruse the Foxy Lady fashion spread in this issue. This wonderful ladies’ store has been outfitting many women in our town for decades and store associates have a great eye for what looks best. Among the hottest tickets will be The Sarasota Ballet Gala, which supports The Sarasota Ballet performances. This season it will present what just may be its best season ever, after which the Company marches to its performance in London later this spring. We take pride in being a media sponsor of some performances as well as the Gala. Please read all performances two and three in this issue. Scene is also delighted to be a media sponsor of Selby Garden’s Orchid Ball, one of the season’s best events. Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast is launching Party in Paradise, which will replace its wildly popular Palm Ball. This event promises to be equally incredible. The Sarasota Opera Gala as well as the Hospital Gala are always hot tickets and always have great entertainment. My good friend Cliff Roles, quickly recovering from a stroke, will be a thoughtful presence at this season’s events. He is the de facto chronographer of social events in Sarasota, brining premium social photography to the community, and creating a personal communication link between organization and people. While he will not be navigating the maze of tables this season, acknowledging the throngs of attendees, usually by name, and acting as a true ambassador of philanthropic causes, we will undoubtedly miss him as he enjoys his retirement. We are pleased to acknowledge Cliff in this issue and pay tribute to his community contributions. On a personal note, as Cliff and I got to know each other over the past five years, we became friends, and he became a guide to me as I navigated my way through seasons here in Sarasota. He introduced me to people, he has made suggestions on event participation, and he became an advocate for me in this community. I continue to enjoy Cliff’s friendship and I am looking forward to him being increasingly active. This month’s Around Town is a conversation with Peter Rothstein, the new Producing Artistic Director of Asolo Rep Theatre. This renowned director of theater, musical 12

For 44 years and counting, The Florida Center has offered an extensive range of programs and services for children and families across Sarasota, Charlotte, DeSoto, and Hardee counties. From essential mental health services and early childhood care to professional counseling, therapy, and support tailored to those with developmental disabilities, The Florida Center remains a lifeline for parents navigating crucial stages of their child’s growth and early development. A Committed Volunteer Couple Championing The Florida Center’s initiatives are dedicated volunteers like Gloria and Kraig Koach, who have thrown their support behind the Center for the past 22 years. The couple’s tag-team philanthropic journey began with a love story. Kraig, a Sarasota native with deep roots in the community, met Gloria, an Orlando native, and together, they shared a commitment not only to each other, but to making a difference in the lives of children in their community, starting with their own. “When our daughter was four years old, someone reached out to us and recommended The Florida Center,“ Gloria recalls. “She needed speech therapy and occupational therapy, and thus we became very close with Kim Williams, speech therapist at The Florida Center. Kim was a lifesaver helping us navigate the journey.” Kraig and Gloria’s personal experience with The Florida Center deeply touched their hearts and inspired them to actively support and advance the organization’s mission. “After seeing what The Florida Center was able to accomplish

for our daughter and other children, supporting their mission became the right and natural thing to do,” says Kraig. “We believe children are our most important asset, and certainly, our future.” Looking back on her daughter’s remarkable journey with The Florida Center’s therapists, Gloria expresses her admiration, saying, “They are outstanding in every skill set, displaying compassion, empathy, professionalism, and they are to be commended in all they do to provide the excellent support.” Along with their volunteer involvement with The Florida Center, both Gloria and Kraig have been active in the community. Gloria contributed her time serving on the various boards including the Junior League of Sarasota, Sarasota Middle and Sarasota High School parent/teacher organizations, and The Asolo Theater, while Kraig served on various boards and supported programs, including the Boy Scouts, Pines of Sarasota, Kiwanis Club, and The Women’s Exchange, among others. The Florida Center’s mission deeply resonated with the Koachs’ personal and shared values. As they continued to delve into the various branches of services and programs offered by the Center, their desire to become more involved in supporting these initiatives grew. “The Florida Center and its staff is vast, professional and first-class, and you walk away with a smile, knowing that your donation is being well spent,” Gloria says. Kraig emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community, saying, “It’s absolutely critical that each and every one of us find something that we can support. Over the years, Gloria and Kraig haven’t just offered financial support to The Florida Center; they’ve also become advocates and ambassadors for the organization; their passionate involvement plays a pivotal role in expanding the Center’s reach. The Importance of Early Intervention Kraig firmly believes that the importance of early intervention cannot be overstated. “You can make the largest impact on a person’s life if you get help to them early enough,” he says. The Florida Center offers in-house services, including infant and early childhood mental health care, ensuring children have access to critical resources from an early age. These services directly benefit children, providing essential oneon-one support that can be life-changing. The Center’s long-standing partnership with the Sarasota County School District ensures that they can deliver crucial mental health and counseling services to every elementary school within Sarasota County. Moreover, their commitment extends beyond the confines of school buildings, with counselors making house calls to provide support where it’s needed most. Notably, their pioneering efforts in areas like diagnosis and treatment of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder counseling underscore the Center’s innovative approach to reaching and aiding Sarasota’s most vulnerable children and families in times of need. A Night of Celebration and Giving Back Each year, on the first Friday of December, The Florida Center hosts its annual Gala, a highly anticipated event on Sarasota’s philanthropic calendar. This enchanting evening serves as both a celebration of the organization’s mission

and a potent fundraising opportunity. The Gala unfolds within a beautifully adorned venue, with attendees eagerly anticipating a night filled with inspiration and camaraderie. Gloria fondly reminisces, “A beautiful video is shown of a family grateful for The Florida Center’s services and support. It demonstrates the impact this organization has on the many needy families in our community.” With elegance and purpose, the Gala raises critical funds to sustain The Florida Center’s vital services and ensures the continued success of its mission. As one who has attended multiple Galas in town, Gloria shares, “This event is special to me, because I have seen firsthand the success of therapy in early childhood development.” The Starfish Academy and Healthy Families Within The Florida Center’s array of programs, The Starfish Academy stands out as a nationally accredited preschool that embodies the spirit of nurturing potential. “The Starfish Academy is an upbeat area within The Florida Center. Innovative, inspiring, and loving describe this wellrounded educational opportunity for young children,” says Gloria. The Starfish Academy is meticulously designed to empower children with the skills, confidence, and foundation they need to thrive in their educational journey. With dedicated, specially trained educators supported by an interdisciplinary team of pediatric specialists, the program is a testament to the Center’s commitment to building strong foundations and setting children on the path to success. Gloria’s heartfelt connection to the cause extends to Healthy Families, another cornerstone program at The Florida Center. This program recognizes the pivotal role of family

dynamics in a child’s development. Kraig emphasizes that, “By fostering healthy family relationships, The Florida Center ensures that every child has a stable and loving foundation.” “This evidence-based home visit program serves over 800 families in the area,” Gloria adds, “Family Specialists provide positive support, education on child development, health and safety topics, and activities that parents can do with their child. They are first rate and model standards set by Healthy Families America.” Healthy Families strengthens family bonds and equips parents with the tools and resources they need to navigate the challenges that can arise during the early stages of parenthood.

A Legacy of Lasting Love Kraig and Gloria envision a thriving future for The Florida Center as Sarasota’s community grows and children’s needs evolve. They hope for expanded mental health support in schools to further the Center’s mission. Gloria emphasizes the significance of the Gala in raising awareness among their friends, highlighting the Center’s professional and expanding services. Kraig acknowledges Sarasota’s rapid growth, emphasizing the increasing needs for children, presenting a significant challenge. While hands-on roles have transitioned to the next generation, Kraig and Gloria now serve as connectors, utilizing their networks to introduce others to the Center’s mission. They believe that these connections are crucial in supporting the community’s needs and ensuring The Florida Center’s resilience in serving Sarasota’s children and families.

Gloria fondly recalls a heartwarming tradition, “For 10 years, I was on the advisory board of Healthy Families. During Christmas time, I hosted annual luncheons in my home for the social workers because it is rare they have an opportunity to be the featured guests. Serving them was indeed an honor and joy.”

In a world where music often serves as a universal language, weaving together harmonies that resonate with the soul, Sarasota Orchestra stands as a melodious movement in the community, composing a legacy that spans over seven decades. Founded in 1949 as the Florida West Coast Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra has entertained music lovers and enriched the regional arts scene for 75 years, establishing itself as a cornerstone of musical excellence. As the oldest continuing orchestra in the state of Florida, it has not only entertained music lovers across the region but also attracted and inspired people like Henry Kahwaty, an avid music enthusiast, skilled musician, and current orchestra board member.

Kahwaty, moved from Washington D.C. to southern Florida in 2012. His passion for music and connection to the Orchestra runs deep. Kahwaty fondly recalls his introduction to Sarasota Orchestra through his cousin, who played violin with the Orchestra, and her son who went through the Orchestra’s educational programs and won the concerto competition. Though Kahwaty has played the trombone from a young age, he admits that since moving to Sarasota his horn has remained untouched in its case, a testament to his busy life.

Like a well-composed symphony, Sarasota Orchestra’s journey is marked by a series of significant milestones, each adding a unique note to its grand musical composition. The Orchestra’s beginnings trace back to Ruth Cotton Butler, who partnered with community leaders George Gibbs, Sam Hill, and Dr. W.D. Sugg to create an orchestra serving Sarasota and Manatee counties. Their vision became reality in 1949 when the Florida West Coast Symphony held its inaugural performance in collaboration with the Manatee River Choral Club. Since its inception, this institution has been a crescendo of culture and education, echoing through time with a rich history and a promising future. In 2008, the orchestra was rebranded as Sarasota Orchestra, marking a new era of artistic growth. The Orchestra’s primary goals are to engage, educate, and enrich the community through high-quality, live musical experiences. Its threefold mission is dedicated to exquisite performance and first-class musical education.

Now a Sarasota Orchestra devotee, Kahwaty emphasizes the unparalleled magic of live performance. He recalls numerous visiting soloists and conductors sharing how

Each June, the Festival welcomes 60 pre-professional fellows from around the globe and 40 faculty artists representing the top conservatories, music colleges, and classical music ensembles for three weeks. This Festival has become a meeting ground for the world’s budding and established musicians, creating a global symphony that resonates with excellence and innovation. As a board member, Kahwaty is actively involved in the Orchestra’s initiatives and future plans. He is particularly enthusiastic about the proposed new Music Center complex, which he sees as a pivotal step in furthering the Orchestra’s mission to bring music to the community. He dreams big about varied programming in the Music Center’s performance spaces showcasing everything from chamber groups to jazz to theatrical performances. For Kahwaty, this isn’t just about having an adequate facility for performances. It’s about having space for educational programs, instrument workshops, and community engagement. He wants to ensure the Orchestra can continue to deliver on its mission to bring music to the people, especially the next generation. “Our mission is broader than just providing concerts for those who want to go out on a Saturday night. It’s important that we do more and place greater emphasis on educating youth. If you bring a thousand kids out to Van Wezel Hall and have them attend a concert,” says Kahwaty, “that experience might ignite a spark of interest in playing an instrument or listening to more orchestral music.” Education has always been a vital string in Sarasota Orchestra’s bow. The Orchestra introduced a program in 1953 that gave children their first taste of orchestral music. Over the years, this program evolved into the Young Person’s Concerts, which today enchants over 10,000 children annually, giving them a firsthand experience 54

of the magic of live orchestral performances. These educational initiatives have nurtured young talents and brought the joy and wonder of symphonic performances to the students of Sarasota and Manatee County. Through the Young Person’s Concerts, thousands of children experience the magic of live orchestral performances every fall, a testament to the Orchestra’s dedication to nurturing a love for music in the community. The Sarasota Youth Orchestras is a prominent musical initiative serving students from third grade through high school, providing a structured environment for young musicians to develop their orchestral skills. A highlight of their program is the top-tier Youth Philharmonic, tailored for those aged 11-18, emphasizing both technical proficiency and musical dedication. As Sarasota Orchestra focuses on community engagement and education, the Youth Orchestras remain integral, fostering the musical growth of upcoming generations. The transformative effect of these youth concerts has particularly left a strong impression on Kahwaty. “There’s something about a live performance,” he explains. “Seeing their expressions and hearing how the music sounded to them, it’s amazing, and all part of an experience you can only get from a live performance.” The annual fourth- and fifth-grade concerts have been highlights for many young attendees over the decades. However, cancellations due to hurricanes and other logistical challenges have been inevitable. The lack of a dedicated facility adds difficulty in rescheduling. In recent years, Sarasota Orchestra has embarked on a new overture, marking significant developments that promise a bright future. Sarasota Orchestra announced plans to establish a new music center in Sarasota County, a move that signifies its growing influence and commitment to the community. Once built, the new Music Center complex will provide the desired flexibility for these needs and will serve as an accessible hub for performances and education programs.

Kahwaty’s excitement about innovative ways to expand access and engage the community is palpable. He draws inspiration from a recent visit to see the Kennedy Center’s new annex, which features a video projection wall where audiences can enjoy free simulcast performances with a picnic dinner outdoors. While there are no concrete plans for such an initiative in Sarasota, his enthusiasm for such innovative approaches is evident. Kahwaty has bold visions for similarly utilizing the outdoor spaces surrounding the Music Center complex to further engage families and students. “I’d love to be able to do something like project an opera or symphony performance onto a large screen at low cost so people can experience the arts in a relaxed setting.” The Orchestra’s annual Summer Music Camp, an educational initiative to make music accessible to learners of all ages and abilities, further amplifies the Orchestra’s commitment to education, offering a platform for young enthusiasts to hone their skills and immerse themselves in the world of music. Kahwaty recounted his own recent inspirational experience hearing a bluegrass session in Nashville, Tennessee. The spontaneity and intimacy of live music provide an experience that simply cannot be replicated by listening to recorded music at home. He hopes to bring more people into the Sarasota Orchestra fold by attracting new faces with expanded programming at even more affordable prices. If people can catch a glimpse of the Orchestra’s passion, that may be the spark that ignites a lifelong interest in classical music. In addition, the Orchestra provides music lessons and partners with schools on multiple outreach programs that aim to bring the beauty of music to a wider audience. These programs have encouraged individuals to explore and develop their musical talents and remain instrumental in the development of a robust musical culture in Sarasota

and Manatee counties. “While we can’t fund all the music teachers, we can at least provide them some materials to work with,” says Kahwaty. Sarasota Orchestra provides a noteworthy role in the community, not only showcasing symphonic masterworks but also inspiring musicians and fans of the future. Thanks to people like Henry Kahwaty, Sarasota Orchestra’s harmonious legacy will continue to echo powerfully for generations to come.

There’s a smiling and kind new face around town that belongs to a man who has the power to make us happier, less stressed, and more empathetic. Who has this power you ask and where do I find him? Just purchase tickets to any or all Asolo Repertory Theatre productions this season, and you will experience an array of powerful emotions brought to you by Asolo Rep’s new producing artistic director—Peter Rothstein. Co-founder and artistic director of Theater Latté Da in Minneapolis, Rothstein has wowed audiences for 25 years, winning numerous theater awards and accolades. He has directed theater, musical theater, and opera and has committed much of his career to the development of new work. For Asolo Rep, he directed Ragtime (2018), Sweeney Todd (2019) and Man of La Mancha (2023). After an extensive nine-month search, Rothstein was selected to replace the beloved Michael Donald Edwards, who helped build Asolo Rep into the powerhouse theater with national recognition that it is today. According to Asolo Rep board chair Randell Johnson, “Peter Rothstein is the perfect person to be Asolo Rep’s next producing artistic director.” We had a lot of questions for this new man around town with big shoes to fill, and he was happy to give us the answers.

Artist of the year. Director of the year. Numerous Ivey awards. You’ve been honored throughout your outstanding career, and we are thrilled to have a person of your talent in Sarasota and at Asolo Rep. Will your producing and artistic process be any different for a Sarasota audience than a Twin Cities audience? I’m a producer who wants to be in conversation with my community. I spend a lot of time listening, reading local newspapers and local authors, attending art exhibits, seeing work at other performing arts organizations. I want the shows on our stage to resonate with this community, to honor what’s important to them, to share its sense of humor. As far as the artistic process, every play demands its own unique creative process, so that’s ever changing. With a robust slate of shows each season, Asolo Rep has always had a diverse repertoire of new plays, reinterpretations of classical works, and re-imagined musical theater experiences. Will you continue this direction and focus? One of the reasons I was so drawn to this position was because of Asolo Rep’s programming. Michael Donald Edwards built an incredible reputation

for putting creative teams together that were inspired to create truly unique theatrical events. Whether producing classic plays, contemporary drama or musical comedy, the productions were Asolo originals developed by innovative artists creating work that resonates with contemporary audiences. I hope to build on that tradition. Asolo Rep opens its season on November 15 with Crazy for You, which will be directed and choreographed by Denis Jones. You can’t go wrong with this classis romantic musical comedy loaded with Gershwin tunes. What can the audience expect from Asolo Rep’s production of this classic? Crazy for You is rarely produced because it demands extraordinary talents. The entire cast needs to be triple threats: great actors, singers, and dancers. It’s a big old fashioned American musical filled with hits songs, great comedy, and huge dance numbers. It is also a celebration of the theater itself; it’s about the magic that happens when a group of people come together to create something that didn’t exist before. You will direct the classics Inherit the Wind and Twelve Angry Men this season. How will you bring Inherit the Wind to life? I have wanted to direct Inherit the Wind for years. It’s been one of my favorite plays since I first saw a community theater production of it back in high school. It is a play written in the 1950’s, inspired by a historical event (Scope’s Monkey Trial) in 1925, but entirely about what is happening today. Our goal is to make it feel like it was written yesterday. To create a theatrical event that is immediate, entertaining, and profound. Twelve Angry Men is being billed as a new musical— not something one would expect from one of our greatest dramas. Tell us more. Sarasota audiences will be some of the first to see and hear this new American musical, adapted from one of America’s greatest dramas. Reginald Rose was a leading writer in the early days of television. His teleplay went on to become a major film, starring Henry Fonda, and has a robust life on Broadway and the regional theater for the past 70 years. I’ve been working with the writers of this adaptation for the past five years. Composer and lyricist Michael Holland and playwright David Simpatico have created a truly unique musical, and through song, illuminates why this drama has withstood the test of time.

Asolo Rep, just like every other arts organization in town, needs generous donations to thrive. The theater staff produces some of the best events in town, and there will be a few new ones this season. Will you be front and center at these events? Sarasota is a remarkable place. I can’t think of another city of our size that has the quantity and quality of arts and culture. That is only possible because of the generosity and the deep investment of donors, volunteers, and audiences. I am looking forward to welcoming patrons to the Asolo, but I am also looking forward to being in the audience and being inspired by my colleagues who are creating extraordinary work for this community. Ross Egan has been named Asolo Rep’s new managing director, replacing the incredible Linda DiGabriele, who served in that capacity for many years. It’s a fresh beginning for the theater! How will you work together to craft the future of Asolo Rep and what are your goals for the theater five years from now? Ross Egan and I have been spending our first few months intently listening—listening to our staff, our board, our audience, and our colleagues in this community. We are learning about why folks have chosen to make this their home,

what the Asolo means to them and their families, and what dreams they have for its future. Our goals will be articulated by first listening. All the performing arts were forced to push the reset button coming out of the pandemic. It is an opportunity to ask ourselves: who do we want to be in this new beginning? How do we reengage our traditional audiences and welcome in new audiences? The pandemic made us all palpably aware of the power of community and the strength in gathering. For me nothing is more inspiring than the communal experience of live theater; my primary goal is how to best share that passion. When you’re not at the theater, do you have any hobbies you love? My husband Omar and I both love to travel, and we are both very close to our families. Now that you have been here for a few months, tell us some of your favorite places, restaurants, and things to do in Sarasota. I love fresh seafood. Sarasota has so many fantastic restaurants and most of them have fresh fish on the menu. I am in culinary heaven.

From the swinging vocals of WWII-era favorites the Andrews Sisters to the mesmerizing minimalism of composer Philip Glass, The Sarasota Ballet performers will dance to a wide range of musical styles this season. Iain Webb, the company’s director since 2007, says the dancers’ virtuosity makes them unique. “There’s no other company like us in America,” he says. “They can be amazing in something classical like Giselle or La Sylphide, then transition to a modern Martha Graham or Paul Taylor piece. The company has the full range — it’s got a heart, it’s got a pulse. They’re hungry. No other ballet companies do quite as varied a repertoire at that level.” In November, The Sarasota Ballet will present a program at the Sarasota Opera House titled “Conflicted Beauty.” The triple bill includes the company premiere of Edwaard Liang’s The Art of War, with music by Michael Torke; and Sir Frederick Ashton’s Dante Sonata, set to the music of Franz Liszt. Both pieces interpret the conflict and chaos at the heart of war. Finishing the program is Company B, created by modern dance choreographer Paul Taylor. Showcasing hit songs by

the Andrews Sisters — including the upbeat “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Rum and Coca-Cola” and the melancholy “I Can Dream, Can’t I?”— Company B reflects the duality of America’s moods during the 1940s, from raising hope for victory and the safe return of sweethearts to the human toll of war. Webb says, “Dancers love doing Paul Taylor’s work. And the program is thematic because of the combination of The Art of War, Dante Sonata and Company B. So I linked them together. But the other reason is that Michael Trusnovec, our répétiteur for Company B, is the greatest authority of Taylor’s work in my opinion. He’s one of the best dancers I’ve seen doing Taylor’s choregraphy work. So for me to get him back and keep him connected with the company and the dancers is important.” In ballet, a répétiteur is the person who stages, or repeats, the work of the original choreographer who created it. But because a modern dance innovator like Taylor may have adjusted a work many times for different stagings to introduce variations or to highlight the talents of different dancers, a répétiteur like Trusnovec will also

tap into the talents of a particular dance company like The Sarasota Ballet — harkening back to the various Taylor-led productions of the piece. “I was there with Mr. Taylor and Bettie de Jong, his longtime rehearsal director, hearing the things they had to say about the dance,” Trusnovec explains. “So it gave me the perspective of both performing within and looking at the dance from outside in ways that were important to Paul and Bettie. And I’ve seen it many times as a spectator. So I have four perspectives — as an audience member, as a dancer, as a rehearsal director, and now as a stager.” Trusnovek hopes audience members will also bring their own vantage points to the production. “My hope anytime with Company B or any Paul Taylor work is that they walk away thinking, ‘Hey, I think I like modern dance.’ So often they’re afraid of it. And I feel like a work like Company B is so accessible. There’s something nostalgic; you hear the music, there’s familiarity, but then it sort of creeps in on you and you start to realize that there are layers of imagery. You’re thinking that on

the surface it’s happy, but there’s something a little bit heavier, a little darker underneath. “Maybe you connect with one of the characters, one of the songs, one of the stories that you walk away thinking about after the show. But first and foremost, I want people to enjoy it.” In December, “Moments of Meaning” will be staged at the Sarasota Opera House. Accompanied by the Sarasota Orchestra, the program will include George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations, with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. “Moments of Meaning” will conclude with Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room, with music by Philip Glass. Shelley Washington, who was a dancer in Tharp’s company for many years, serves as the répétiteur. The piece is a showcase for Tharp’s inventive choreography, bringing together the moves of boxing, tap dance, yoga, ballet and full-speed sprinting. Washington says In the Upper Room is a real workout, even for seasoned dancers. “There are three women in

point shoes and three men in ballet shoes, three women in sneakers, three men in sneakers and one woman we call ‘Crossover.’ She starts in tennis shoes and she finishes in point shoes. She actually changes her hair during the piece.” The Sarasota Ballet is lucky to work with Washington, and the feeling is mutual.

And the beauty is in the struggle and in the perfection of it, and watching people do things they didn’t think they could do. And the community of the company and their work: the costumes, the lights, the choreography, the dancers themselves, the director that has the genius to do the piece, the audience that’s watching it, the whole thing. As I said to the dancers, ‘You’re only as good as everybody else on stage.’ And that is a beautiful thing. It’s running the race with the torch, and then the next person gets it and the next person gets it, and the next person. It’s a team. It’s a community. It’s a beautiful, beautiful energy.” Webb thinks audience members will be blown away by the piece. “I think their reaction will be similar to how I felt was when I first saw it. I was just sort of transformed into something in a completely different space. There are just so many elements — the incredible Jennifer Tipton lighting, the Philip Glass music, Twyla Tharp’s choreography. It’s a wonder how on earth, physically, the dancers put themselves through it; it must be one of the hardest dance routines of all time. And it’s just one of those where it just lifts the roof off the Opera House.” Explaining how he developed “Moments of Meaning,” Webb says, “What I like doing is to have a program that will have something for everybody. I like really pushing the barriers. So I said to myself, ‘Okay, it’s The Sarasota Ballet. Let’s do Tchaikovsky, but let’s finish with Philip Glass. Let’s start with Balanchine. Let’s finish with Twyla.’ So it’s a real shock — it’s like when you eat something for the first time and it all just explodes in your mouth and there’s this amazing feeling and this amazing taste. And that’s what In the Upper Room is. “The audience for this program is going to be saying, ‘Oh, lovely, lovely, lovely.” And then, ‘Wow, what was that?’ It’s just going to be an amazing experience for everybody.”

Gala Season Magic Journey Through the Lens of Sarasota’s Celebrated Photographer, Cliff Roles by Kaileia Suvannamaccha In the heart of Sarasota’s vibrant arts and philanthropic scene, one name shines bright—Cliff Roles. A celebrated photographer, Cliff has dedicated his lens to immortalizing the glamour and elegance of Sarasota’s most prestigious events during the city’s annual “gala season.” While Cliff’s work is widely recognized in Sarasota, few may be aware of the extensive and diverse background that led him to become the iconic photographer he is today. A Remarkable Journey Before his photography career, Cliff Roles led a diverse and dynamic life. Originally from Croydon, England, he ventured into the world of sales and promotions. This journey led him to work with some of the biggest names in the music industry and witness pivotal moments in history, one of the most memorable of which was watching the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. In 1984, he charmed

his way into a music-publishing company in Germany, where he worked in marketing and promotions for over 130 of the world’s most renowned rock and pop stars of the 80s and 90s, including Elton John, Celine Dion, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Kiss, to name a few. A Transition to Sarasota The turn of the millennium marked a change in career path for Cliff. He became a professional German/English translator, an opportunity that gave him the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world. Captivated by the beauty of Florida, Cliff flirted with the idea of moving to the sunshine state before finally planting his roots in Sarasota after meeting his wife, Maria. Beyond the Lens While Cliff is most often celebrated for his work behind the camera, he has also worn different hats in the world of entertainment and marketing. His commitment to putting the subject ahead of himself highlights his dedication to his craft. In 2003, he discovered his love for acting, performing in various productions that showcased his versatility from the Asolo Repertory Theatre, Players of Sarasota,

and Venice Theatre to the Manatee Players, Golden Apple Dinner Theatre, and the Backlot. Not only was he passionate, but also incredibly talented, recognized by nearly every local media publication and was awarded “Best Local Actor” two years in a row, and voted “Best Local Charismatic Actor,” among many other notable titles over the years. He was even asked to be Ringmaster of Circus Sarasota in 2006 and 2007. Having an impressive ability to excel at anything creative he put his mind to, Cliff went on to host his very own talkshow that aired on WIBQ radio called “Talk Of The Sun Coast.” He also broadcasted through Sarasota’s Community Radio WSLR and local AM station WSRQ and was voted “Best Local Media Personality.” Gala Season Extravaganza Cliff’s journey into photography was serendipitous. It all began in 2007. At the time, he was emceeing a large number of non-profit events in Sarasota when he was asked to take pictures of a few attendees for their Black Tie pages. He had an obvious natural talent, and it led him to become the community’s premier event photographer, voted “Best Photographer” two years in a row. He has been heavily sought out and booked

throughout Sarasota’s social season, lasting October through May ever since. As the city’s most highly anticipated fundraising events grew more extravagant year by year, Cliff was there to capture the magical moments that would have otherwise gone unseen. These galas, including The Orchid Ball, Sarasota Memorial Foundation, The Asolo, The Circus Sarasota, and Ringling College’s annual Avant Garde, have been his canvas, creating timeless memories. Reflecting on this time of year, he says, “I got to know the world’s best people, and I enjoyed getting involved in charities, especially children’s charities.” Capturing Souls at Their Best A down-to-earth and sociable individual, Cliff dedicated his life to capturing people at their best during these extravagant galas. “A m o n g s t t h e c o u n t l e s s e v e n t s I ’ v e photographed through the years, I have a warm spot for the Asolo Repertory Theater, all the wonderful production events I was able to photograph, and the wonderful friendships with all the artists I was able to obtain,” he says.

What makes his approach really standout is the emphasis he places on his role of ensuring that his subjects stand to their advantage, not his. He adds, “You must put the subject over yourself. You should know everything about the organization you’re going to photograph. You have to know their needs and passions to really understand what needs to be photographed.” One of Cliff’s lifelong passions has been travel. In 2013, Cliff published his book, Walkabout Europe, based on his visit to 15 countries in 50 days with a backpack and his camera. Every summer, between June and September, he likes to “go walkabout” and discover new places across the globe. It has been an exciting way for him to expand his mind, and his portfolio. Once the pandemic hit, Cliff offered “Coronicals,” short “drive-by” photo sessions at low cost that depicted how people were living during this time. At some point in the near future, he plans to publish a coffee-table book, “Cliff Roles’ Coronicals,” that will feature photos from this era. A Screeching Halt and a New Beginning Cliff has reached a significant turning point in his life, a stroke that has unfortunately caused his life and career to come to a screeching halt. His physical therapy has

been extensive, but slowly and surely, he is on his way to recovery. While Cliff’s heart and soul are firmly anchored in Sarasota, he intends to spend more time with his grandchildren as he moves into his retirement years. A Passion Beyond Profit Throughout his journey, one thing remains clear photography isn’t merely a means to make a living; it’s a means to make a difference. For Cliff, it’s about capturing the moments that matter, highlighting the organizations that shape Sarasota, and preserving the legacies of those who contribute to the community. As Cliff Roles reflects on his life and career, it’s evident that he has not just been a witness to Sarasota’s transformation; he’s been an active participant in creating and quite literally framing the Sarasota we know and love today. His dedication to photography, his commitment to preserving memories, and his sociable nature have made him an icon in Sarasota’s vibrant arts and culture scene. • F l o r i da Stu d i o T h e at r e C e l e b r at e s 50 Incredible Years • By t o m r e e s e Over the last 50 years, Florida Studio Theatre, widely known as simply FST, has become part of the heart and soul of downtown Sarasota. As the largest subscription theater in Florida, FST welcomes over 220,000 attendees each year into its five unique theaters hosting a variety of productions such as Mainstage plays, cabaret, improv, and so much more. FST operates at 98% capacity for its shows, which is truly remarkable. A PROUD HISTORY Founded in 1973 by Jon Spelman, FST began as an alternative touring theater, playing to estranged audiences such as prisons, migrant camps, and nursing homes. In 1980, Richard Hopkins, FST’s CEO and Producing Artistic Director, converted the former clubhouse of the Sarasota Woman’s Club into FST’s first home—Keating Theatre. In 1996, FST opened the doors to its Goldstein Cabaret Theatre, which 10 4

became quite popular and played a major role in the exponential growth of the organization. “We started with the Mainstage, but things really shifted for the organization when we opened the Cabaret theater,” says Rebecca Hopkins, Managing Director of FST. “Going from a one-theater operation to a twotheater operation was big for the community and for us to diversify programming. The Cabaret became a gateway for any type of theater you were interested in.” In the early years of FST, the founding members wanted to produce shows that their friends and family could easily afford to attend. Subscription plans were introduced in addition to single-use tickets enabling the community to attend all kinds of performances throughout each season. This principle of affordability remains one of the most important factors for FST, even in our vastly changing economy.

“Art and theater in general were frequently perceived as something for the wealthy or the elite,” said Richard Hopkins. “We wanted to make sure that in the spirit of Shakespeare and the ancient Greeks, that our theater is available to everybody, and that everybody can afford it.” Subscriptions were not only designed to make the theater affordable, but to expand the overall audience and push the boundaries of attendees and their interests. “Our goal was to build an audience that came on a regular basis and did not just come to one play a year. We wanted them to come to a season of plays because then we could challenge them,” said Richard Hopkins. “Our package of plays gets them out of their bubble and into something new and exciting. We started offering subscriptions so we can take the audience on a journey, listen to them, and see how they are responding, which helps us with our play selection in the future. The theater and the audience constantly challenge each other, and that creates the best possible theater,” Hopkins concluded. In 2014, FST’s fifth theater, Bowne’s Lab, which is part of FST’s Hegner Theatre Wing, opened its doors for experimental work and later became home to Stage III plays, which are dedicated to presenting edgy plays

that are challenging in content and unique in form. Forming a cohesive five-theatre operation was vital for expanding different types of entertainment for different walks of life. Today, FST is one of America’s largest subscription-based theaters and it is continuing to grow at a very rapid pace. Their next endeavor is the current construction of Mulva Arts Plaza, an 8-10 story multi-use building nestled in between FST’s current theaters in downtown Sarasota. The massive project will include a new Mainstage theater to allow for expansion of the Mainstage and Stage III Series, two new Cabaret theaters, extended-stay studio apartments for FST’s visiting guest artists, much-needed parking, affordable housing for Sarasota’s year-round arts workers, and much more. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT “Sarasota is a great place to raise children, and an even better place to raise adults,” said Richard Hopkins, which is why FST prides itself on being as active as it can possibly be in the greater Sarasota community. There are several different programs to get young children involved in the arts and allow them to experience the wonders of theater. Their most interactive program, WRITE A PLAY, is an award-winning year-round artsNOVEMBER 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE

in-education initiative, providing students with the example, the inspiration, and the skills to write their own original plays. These plays are then evaluated and about a dozen winning plays are put into a professional production and brought to life by FST actors. Since its inception in 1991, WRITE A PLAY has impacted over one million children throughout the state of Florida, and internationally as far as Scotland and Israel.

Metamorphoses (2004-2005)

This program works in three distinct operations throughout the year. In the fall, over 4,000 kids around Sarasota County are bussed in to view a featured play, which this year’s production being The Velveteen Rabbit: A Toy Story. FST even has a playmaker’s tour that travels throughout Florida with an interactive workshop inspiring children to write plays. “We say inspire because we’re not teaching them, kids know how to play,” said Rebecca Hopkins. “We show them how to put it into an actual play. Every year we get thousands of plays written by children in sixth grade and under. We read them all twice, and we put

together an anthology of the best ones that represent Laughing Matters (2011) the current year.” The final aspect of this program is getting the children to come and watch the plays written by their peers, brought to life in a professional theater setting. Nearly 8,800 kids watch their winning plays across FST’s different theaters, but that is not where FST’s programming for children ends. After noticing the limitations of bus routes and scheduling field trips, FST started its Weekend Children’s Theatre Series in 2016. This initiative allows families from all over the state to bring their children to FST’s Keating Theatre and watch these plays on their own time. Another significant aspect of FST’s community involvement are the educational programs they operate. They offer classes year-round for students of all ages and experience levels in acting, music, dance, theater writing, and improvisation. An annual summer camp at FST’s downtown campus welcomes young artists and children to discover, create, and connect through the art of live theater.

educationmatters Forty Carrots Family Center Celebrates 30 Years of Helping Children & Parents By Tom Reese In 1993, Betsy Kane-Hartnett and Diane Weiss set out on a journey to share their knowledge of parenting education and early childhood education with their local community. Thirty years later, Forty Carrots has become a pivotal resource for families, now including mental health services in Sarasota and Manatee counties, reaching over 6,000 clients in the last calendar year with the hopes of significantly doubling that number as construction of its third campus building nears completion. LAUNCHING A DREAM The origin of Forty Carrots Family Center began just as Kane-Hartnett and Weiss were about to celebrate their 40th birthdays. They had always dreamed of combining their talents and expertise to create a nonprofit organization with the goal of giving back to their community and helping families raise their children by preventing possible instances of abuse or neglect. They believed they could make a massive impact, and they have. “Back then we didn’t know what a business plan was,” says Kane-Hartnett. “Our board was made up of family and friends. When we chose our staff, we chose people who would become part of our family.” 10 8

Forty Carrots’ mission has stayed the same over the years: nurture healthy child and family development through research-based, relationship-centered education and mental health services. Their underlying goal is preventing abuse, neglect, and childhood trauma, while also intervening and providing treatment for both the parents and children. “We knew that if we wanted to make a real difference in our families’ lives, and ultimately throughout our community, we had to provide parents with support and necessary tools to be successful from the beginning,” says Weiss. “Those first five years are the most critical. Nearly 40 percent of children abused or neglected in our country are five years of age or younger, with the greatest risk being in the first year of life.” Through 1,533 free community outreach groups at 30 different community partner locations, Forty Carrots provided services for thousands in its 2022-2023 program year. The most impressive statistic is that 96% of families received these services absolutely free of any cost through scholarships and financial aid assistance programs. “One of our core goals is to serve everyone without barriers, especially financial barriers,” says Michelle

Kapreilian, CEO of Forty Carrots. “We want to make sure that everyone has access to what we have to offer.” EDUCATING CHILDREN AND PARENTS When Forty Carrots first launched thirty years ago, it started with two programs: an advanced preschool for early childhood education, as well as parenting education. Its preschool has a national accreditation with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, which puts them into strict ratios of children to teachers. This ensures each child quality time with the staff for advanced development. The teachers all have degrees and are specially trained to work with children from ages two to four. The standards Forty Carrots sets for its preschool are much further beyond the requirement of the state of Florida, which makes it very desirable and in high demand for all families in the region. “More learning is done for children in infancy, toddler, and preschool ages than at any other point in your life,” says Carla Johanns, Chief Program Officer. “You are truly learning all about your environment and building relationship skills. That is why we do this and have relationships with these families.”

The backbone of Forty Carrots is its Parenting Education program, which works with parents to strengthen their relationships with their children. This includes face-to-face meetings with over 5,000 clients on a yearly basis. Forty Carrots reach these families by physically traveling to them and setting up classes at their community outreach partners’ facilities. These locations include public libraries and schools, as well as other charitable organizations such as Lightshare Behavioral Wellness and Recovery, , Harvest House, The Salvation Army, and several others. One example of a parenting education class would be a play-based group . In different community locations, parents and their children gather on play mats to play together and strengthen their attachment and bond.. Specialized parenting educators are present to observe and intervene when necessary and answer any parents’ questions. Private parenting consultations are also available for face-to-face meetings, Zoom meetings, or phone calls. This allows parents to ask questions that might not be appropriate to discuss in front of their children during play sessions or other encounters. Sometimes these conversations result in a handoff to Forty Carrots’ mental health professionals. NOVEMBER 2023 | SARASOTA SCENE

INTERVENTION THROUGH MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES As Forty Carrots continued to expand, the need for forms of intervention became glaringly apparent, and it now offers advanced mental health services available for both children and parents. “We had a couple of parenting educators, who were also social workers at the time, who wanted to dig a little deeper with the families that were really struggling,” said Johanns. “We started out of a closet, only serving a handful of clients each year. Now we provide mental health programs for hundreds of families.” Many of the people they serve are pregnant and postpartum mothers, but the program also services children into their young adult years. Postpartum depression in mothers, and in some cases fathers, can drastically affect a young child’s development. Connecting with children through attachment is vital for relationship growth, and it is very difficult for mothers struggling with postpartum depression to form those connections with their children. Forty Carrots provides therapy and group work for families dealing with this problem. $10M EXPANSION CAMPAIGN In 2017, Forty Carrots realized the drastic need for more mental health and parenting education services and more space to conduct its programs and it began an expansion campaign. Last year, over 600 families were turned away because of the increased demand and lack of resources available. Its expansion campaign included a brand new 6,900 square foot state-ofthe-art mental health center with six therapy rooms, parenting center, and offices to accommodate growth and staff. The new facility is expected to be up and running in the early months of 2024. “This new building is just the vehicle for us to continue our work in parenting education and mental health services,” says Kapreilian. “We expect a 100% 110

increase in mental health sessions over the next five years.” The projected cost of this expansion campaign is $10 million, with about $8.75 million already raised. While donations through Forty Carrots’ website and physical locations are always accepted, a large portion of this money is raised through charitable fundraisers. WAYS TO GET INVOLVED Forty Carrots’ next fundraising event is the very popular Wine, Women & Shoes—a three-day event which directly supports Forty Carrots. The main event will be held November 17, 2023 at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. Guests sip delectable wines while shopping in a specially curated marketplace. This includes lunch with friends, an entertaining fashion show, and dancing in the champagne lounge. “We really do want to change the world and our community,” says Kapreilian. “We know that our programs are making an impact, and we need more ambassadors to spread the word, as well as financial contributions. If you know any new parents, send them our way. We want to help them.”

Not long before The Sarasota Ballet’s 2023 – 2024 Season began this past August, the Company announced the addition of an exciting new dancer, Principal Dancer Jennifer Hackbar th. Just a few months later, Jennifer wowed audiences in The Sarasota Ballet’s season opening program, Progression in Rep, where she would dance the lead roles in all three ballet s over the 5-performance run. Dance Critic Carrie Seidman described her during a review for the Herald Tribune as “a standout addition” and that her “trilogy of performances was a testament not only to her stamina, but her versatility and nuance.” Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jennifer trained at several impor tant and prestigious institutions including the School of American Ballet and John Cranko Schule, all of which she attended on full merit scholarship. Starting her professional career as an Apprentice with New York City Ballet, Jennifer eventually made the move to Germany in 2017 when she joined the Dresden Semperoper Ballet where she rose to the rank of Soloist. During her time in Europe, she danced difficult and technically challenging roles by some of the great Choreographers of modern and classical ballet. Highlights during her career thus far include lead roles in Aaron S. Watkin’s Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and La Bayadere; William Forsythe’s The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude, The Second Detail, and Impressing the Czar; George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, and The Nutcracker; and David Dawson’s Romeo and Juliet and Giselle. “We are thrilled that Jennifer has joined the Company,” explain Iain Webb and Margaret Barbieri, Director and Assistant Director of The Sarasota Ballet. “We were so impressed by her overall background and most specifically her experience dancing in classical ballets, such as works by the renowned George Balanchine. Her versatility, technicality, and her ability to grasp different styles of choreography match our artistic vision so perfectly. We are all so eager to watch her continue to grow and flourish as a part of The Sarasota Ballet family.”

For 30 years, Juana Valdés has transformed ideas, thoughts, and feelings into works of art anchored in stories, many of which are inspired by her personal experiences. Her first solo exhibition at a museum–Embodied Memories, Ancestral Histories–presents selected works from throughout her 30-year career and explores the history of migration between the Caribbean and the United States, gender, race, and the representation of the female body. “I am excited for Juana to present her first one-artist show,” said guest curator, Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig. “Seeing Juana’s works together for the first time is like reading a novel from the beginning instead of a few chapters here and there. It is meaningful that this exhibition takes place in Florida, where she arrived as a Cuban immigrant at seven years old. Her art allows us to relate to and learn from her journey and the significant issues she addresses.” The story she tells unravels as the visitor moves through the galleries and becomes acquainted with three main topics that are not necessarily exclusive: “The History of Migration,” “Representation and Subjectivity,” and “Materiality.” Through many of the works featured in the exhibition, Valdés has generated a voice and a discourse inspired by themes such as colonization’s history and migration’s impact. Another significant theme is the issue of gender and the representation of the feminine body. Through several works, Valdés invites visitors to reflect on the objectification of the female body and the “whitening of race” as a legacy of colonialism. Race is a connecting thread that links the different sections of the exhibition, an issue that she addresses from her experience as a woman of color living in the United States. Valdés’ choice of materials is as important as the themes she conveys. Working in a range of both traditional and non-traditional media—from ceramics, with all its associations of feminine and manual work, to new media—she communicates ideas of the personal and subjective while at the same time challenging the canon of art. Her audiovisual work highlights her entire oeuvre as an archive through which she analyzes and recodifies topics that include transnationalism, migration, race, gender, and discrimination at work, and the Latinx discourse she deals with from her experience as an Afro-Cuban woman residing in the United States. “Juana Valdés: Embodied Memories, Ancestral Histories” is on view at Sarasota Art Museum October 22, 2023 - February 11, 2024. 122
