PLYMOUTH HARBOR –

THE PLACE TO PURSUE LIFE’S PASSIONS

When university dean Dr. Norma Compton retired to Sarasota she didn’t leave behind her academic pursuits. What was once scholarly research of textiles and the psychology of color has been transformed into a passion for creating intricate fabric collages. Life at Plymouth Harbor provides an endless source of inspiration, from a lively network of friends and fellow artists to the kaleidoscopic sunsets she enjoys from her own window. And her creative projects find audiences at art exhibits throughout the surrounding community. When quality of life, smart planning and freedom to pursue passions and new interests are top priorities, Plymouth Harbor is the wise choice. tingling with delight! Several society swells shared with me what they are most looking forward to this season. Take note social star wannabes, and start filling your calendar with must-attend events. Can you believe that the very youthful and vibrant Scott Anderson is turning 60 this fall? I can’t either! the Community AIDS Network’s CAN Dance on October 22, in which he is dancing. He told me this should be very interesting considering he doesn’t dance. I think he has no worries as last year’s lovable curmudgeon and nondancer Bob Plunket was a featured dancer and he was a big hit! All Scott has to do is flash that warm smile of his and he will be all set! Another handsome man who will be strutting his stuff at the CAN Dance is interior designer celebrity, Jason Champion. I can’t wait to see this line-up on the dance floor. It will be just too, too much! New darling on the social scene, Diana Kelly, with her shoe company, will be participating in Forty Carrots’ Wine, Women, and Shoes event It’s the perfect blend of all things fabulous - philanthropy, women from around the community striving to make a difference, and of course, wine and shoes from around the world. She tells me that as a retail partner, she’s participated in many Wine, Women, and Shoes events around the country and hands down, our Sarasota event is the best in the nation!

has a full plate this season with her perfectly manicured fingers in the pots of several of Sarasota’s finest events – Designing Women Boutique’s Fashion Week, Sarasota Film Festival, SPARRC, The Y’s Going for the Gold and the Asolo gala. Hoping to see a season that was as good as last year’s, uber-caterer Phil Mancini wants to find more balance in life between work and family. I think dear Mr. Mancini will have to retire to find that! Artist and business woman, Elizabeth Van Riper is launching a new artistic endeavor on the web and in retail stores. For inspiration, she will also attend The Ringling International Festival of the Arts, Gloria Musicae’s new season, the third annual International Chalk Festival, Perlman Music Festival, and seeing how the RCAD Film Initiatives build in their second season. All of this on top of the Hermitage Artist Retreat’s Artful Lobster event where she is in charge of the silent and live auction, finding all sorts of special and unique items for arts lovers to bid on. As USF Sarasota-Manatee Regional Chancellor, Dr. Arthur M. Guilford, loves his evergrowing campus and the events that take place there, namely, the ever popular Brunch on the Bay which is their signature scholarship event which takes place the first Sunday in November and the Perlman Winter Music Program which will start immediately after Christmas, providing free opportunities for us to watch a world-class musician and his very exceptionally talented students rehearse and perform. A major event this fall will honor one of Sarasota’s most beloved philanthropists, Betty Schoenbaum. Phil King, the Glasser Shoenbaum Center’s Executive Director shared that Celebrating Promises Kept and Dreams Fulfilled...A Big Hug Back to Betty is scheduled for November 6, at the Hyatt. Everyone who is anyone will absolutely be there to pay homage to the majestic, yet down to earth, Betty. Co-chairing the Betty event with Dr. Lou Bertha McKenzie-Warton is the very talented Bunny Skirboll, who is everywhere this fall. In addition to the Glasser Shoenbaum event, she is also the VP of programming for the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Book Festival opening night and reception featuring Adina Hoffman and Peter Cole on Nov. 12. One of the very hottest tickets for fall is the Sarasota Orchestra’s All Jazzed Up Season Opener Brunch on Nov. 20, which in a few short year’s has become a sold-out, must-do event. Bunny is co-chairing this

with Edie Chaifetz. The divine Sally Faron, La Musica;s executive director, shared with me that this year is the beginning of La Musica’s second quarter-century. Their 26th season will bring new ideas and programming, all of which will be announced at their seriously swanky Sonata a Due on December 5 at the Charles Ringling Mansion. It’s a favorite Sarasota holiday party featuring Daniel Avshalomov and Derek Han in recital followed by a sublime dinner in the renowned mansion’s living room. Lovebirds Jane and Bob Kiebitz are looking forward this fall to celebrating their 5th anniversary with a trip to England, Wales and Scotland, followed by a cruise to the Caribbean a few weeks later. Chairing Selby Gardens Orchid Ball for the second year, sweetie-pie Kristiana Serbin tells me the theme this year is Marie Antoinette: Let Them Eat Cake! I loved the movie version with Kristen Dunst. Lots of black-tie events and cultural activities are on her calendar and of course, the Forks & Corks 2012 event by the Sarasota-Manatee Originals restaurants in the breath-taking Ringling Museum courtyard. She has already found the hat she wants to wear so will have to now find a dress and shoes to go with it - at Saks of course! Susan is also the co-chair of the Junior League of Manatee County Sustainers this year, along with Sandy Mackie. They are planning a Homecoming Fall Social, a Holiday Mini-Market in November and an annual Holiday Tea in December. They are also busy planning JLMC’s 25th Anniversary Party for February. The ballet, of which Hillary is board president, will have a large contingency of “groupies” traveling to DC to cheer on the dancers. Golfer Bruce Lesser (I think we could tell he was a golfer by his, ahem, exuerbrant wardrobe, couldn’t we?) will be playing in the Bob Hope golf tournament in Palm Springs for the fourth time this season. He and wife, India, are also looking forward to the Asolo’s new season where their second year student, Joe McGranaghan, and their third year student, Tony Stopperan, will be performing on stage. How fun is that to sponsor Conservatory students?!

Don’t Struggle With Hearing Loss Sharon and Doug of Gibson’s Hearing Technologies know from first-hand experience that the art of any good relationship is the art of good communication. “Not being able to hear clearly was frustrating to say the least,” says Doug Gibson. “Hearing loss can cause social isolation because the sufferer may find it easier to withdraw from group activities than to participate in them, “ notes Doug. “Such behavior might in turn cause people to think of him or her as timid or disconnected and give up trying to communicate.” “Sometimes I felt he did not care enough to listen, “ said Sharon. At least ten percent of Americans have some degree of hearing loss, ranging from mild to profound. Older adults are affected most, as hearing loss tends to accelerate with age. An estimated thirty percent of Americans aged 65 and older, and approximately fifty percent of those over age 75 have a hearing impairment. Hearing loss can occur at any age, however, due to factors such as noise exposure, trauma, genetics and illness. Worldwide, the number of people with hearing loss is estimated at 500 million. “Fortunately, significant improvements in hearing technology have been made in the last few decades,” reports Doug. “More options for treating hearing loss are available, and some of these options are not even noticeable to others. They key is for the patient to find a treatment for their needs and lifestyle.” “My name is Doug Gibson, of Gibson’s Hearings Technologies. I am a Board Certified Hearing Aid Specialist and a fellow hearing aid user for over fifteen years. I’ve tried over forty-five different aids and I currently wear an aid — without anyone noticing! I invite you to come in for a free hearing test and evaluation to find out what your options are for different styles, circuits and manufacturers. We will answer all your questions and found out how we can change your life.”

Originally a research biochemist, Realtor Melba Jimenez is a brainy beauty. One of her favorite events has become the Town Hall series. She and husband Cucho, get together with friends after each lecture and participate in a great intellectual exchange of ideas. Melba can’t wait to see her dear friends who go away for the summer and to resume her book clubs, another venue for intellectual discussion and sisterly support. The Hermitage Artist Retreat’s November 19th Artful Lobster event is Brad Goddard’s opening day - it let’s him know it’s a new season. He and wife Mary Beth also enjoy anything at Ringling College and New College and also when the curtain rises for a new season at Asolo and the Opera. Looking for a season of magic and miracles for both people and pets, Dr. Anne Chauvet will be devoting her time to the Humane Society’s Hot Dogs and Cool Cats, CAN’s Dancing with the Stars, Winefest, and Mote Marine. The delicious Jeanie Kirkpatrick mentioned to me that she is co-chairing with Helen King, the South Florida Museum’s Snooty Gala again this year on November 5. Bradenton’s premier social event, Under the Courtyard Moon, expects 500 guests to mix and mingle under the watchful eye of Hernando DeSoto. Dottie Baer Garner and dear husband Bob are heavily involved in all things cultural – the opera, orchestra, community music concerts, and all the art-related exhibits and programs at Ringling College. It’s so hard for her to choose in a jam-packed season, but is thankful she has so much to select from. If you attend the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe’s Le Jazz Hot gala in November, co-chair Carol Poteat-Buchanan shared with me that not only will you get a finger-snapping, toe-tapping, dancing in your seat kind of entertainment by the Troupe, but you will also get a glimpse of what’s ahead in the 2011-2012 season shows – reason enough to buy a ticket right then and there. Planning the return of one of her largest corporate clients for their 5-day Annual Conference in Sarasota after an absence of three years, planner extraordinaire Mary Kenealy-Barbetta is hoping this reflects an improvement in the local economic climate. Bavarian beauty Margarete van Antwerpen will visit her homeland of Germany this fall, a place she has not returned to since she was a mere child in 1951. Calendars marked, ball gowns ready, let’s start the season! Until

While outsiders might think the Sarasota area is little more than a lovely beach town, visitors and newcomers quickly find that we’ve also got more activities, events, and fun to offer than just white sand, cool water, and oh-so-sunny skies. Here’s good news: the upcoming 2011-2012 festival and fair season certainly looks to be no exception. Listed below in chronological order are some of the more significant festivals, fairs, and festivities that will be running over the next twelve months. If you see something that piques your interest, check out their website for specific information.

/////////////////// Ringling International Arts Festival/////////////////// October 11-16 www.ringlingartsfestival.org/2011/ In conjunction with New York’s Baryshnikov Arts Center, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art brings us a six-day extravaganza of modern dance, music, theater, and visual arts that is unparalleled. One of the highlights of the opening night party is the group Asphalt Orchestra, which might best be described as the movie “Drumline” meets the theater group “Stomp.” Other noteworthy performances for the week include The Wooster Group’s rendition of “Hamlet” and “Out of Time,” a performance by Irish step dancer Colin Dunne. If your schedule allows you to attend only one or two performances, it’ll be hard to pick from such award-winning acts. The Ringling International Arts Festival draws visitors from throughout the U.S., which attests to the quality of this event that happens right here in our backyard. Don’t miss this one.

///////////////////////////////Sarasota Chalk Festival/////////////////////////////// November 1 - 7 www.chalkfestival.com The festival, now in its fourth season, features some of the most exciting contemporary street painting from both local and international artists. For an entire week, Burns Square will come alive as over 250 artists take chalk to pavement to add their own contributions to this year’s theme: “Pavement Art Through the Ages.” This year’s festival isn’t just going to appear on sidewalks and streets — mural and graffiti artists will create artwork on walls throughout the city as well as on canvases, boards and other surfaces at the festival, so look up and all around. And feel free to bring the little ones — young artists-to-be are encouraged to participate via the Little Chalk’ers area. One of the real draws for this year’s event is world-renowned il-

Honor resonates with the force of thunder in this tender love story between a young geisha and her American Naval Officer. Continuing to distinguish itself as one of American’s premiere opera companies, Sarasota Opera opens its Fall Season on October 28th with Giacomo Puccini’s classic love story Madama Butterfly. Premiered in February 1904 at the famed La Scala opera house in Milan, Madama Butterfly quickly gained world wide acclaim 48

with performances in Buenos Aires, London, the United States and Paris by 1907. Today, it is one of the most beloved and frequently performed opera’s in North America, and has served as the inspiration for the creation of more modern pieces such as the movie My Geisha starring Shirley MacLaine, Henry David Hwang’s award winning play M. Butterfly and the Broadway musical Miss Saigon. Cio-Cio San, a young geisha also known as Butterfly, leaves her family to marry B.F. Pinkerton, a young Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy temporarily stationed in Nagasaki, Japan at the turn of the 20th Century. Pinkerton has secured a lease on a house for 999 years with the option of canceling the contract any month. Overwhelmed by his immediate professions of love, Butterfly claims eternal devotion to the young American and promises to wait for his return when orders take him back to America unaware of the twist of fate time will eventually unveil. Maestro Victor DeRenzi, Artistic Director, has assembled an international cast of talent that will be sure to sing life into Puccini’s heartrending music. Soprano Asako Tamura, who has sung the role of Butterfly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and in South America, and was last seen at Sarasota Opera in 2006 as Amalia in Verdi’s I Masnadieri, will return to sing the title role. Joining Ms. Tamura will be two Sarasota Opera favorites. Tenor Rafael Dávila, who brought the house down as Oronte in the 2011 production of I Lombardi alla prima crociata returns for his eighth season to portray the young Naval Officer B.F. Pinkerton, and baritone Marco Nisticò, who was last seen in Sarasota as Giacomo in Giovanna d’Arco, will sing the American Consul Sharpless. Finally, making her Sarasota Opera debut will be mezzo-soprano Nina Yoshida Nelsen singing the role of Butterfly’s faithful servant Suzuki. Ms. Nelsen most recently received accolades for her portrayal of Suzuki at both New York City Opera and at Royal Albert Hall in London. Martha Collins will return to direct this beautiful Sarasota Opera production, last seen in 2007, that features sets by David P. Gordon and costumes by Evan Ayotte. Marco Nisticò

Season Preview The New Performing Arts Season Promises to be a Potpourri of Entertainment Choices By Steven J. Smith

The 2011-12 performing arts season is upon us, and the coming months will be filled with opportunities to behold a plethora of talented writers, directors, actors, singers, dancers, and musicians displaying their craft at area venues. Below is just a sampling of some new, different, noteworthy and exciting offerings you can expect to enjoy at the theatre, opera, ballet, or symphony this coming season. 52

Asolo Repertory Theatre Two Tony-award winning directors, Frank Gallati and Jeff Calhoun, will helm productions at this nationally acclaimed regional theatre this season. Gallati, who directed the celebrated “Twelve Angry Men” last year, will return to direct the timeless musical “My Fair Lady,” which will kick off the Asolo’s season. Calhoun, who directed last year’s “Bonnie and Clyde” — which is now headed to Broadway — will direct “Tommy Tune Presents: State of the Art Song & Dance,” which will close the season. In addition, Asolo Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards will direct “Hamlet, Prince of Cuba,” adapted by Edwards from Shakespeare’s timeless classic. The spin on this production, however, will center upon a distinctively Cuban Hamlet, offering interestingly new perspectives of the play. In addition, performances will be offered in both Spanish and English, performed by a bilingual cast. The Asolo’s 2010 production of “Bonnie and Clyde” is now headed to Broadway.

“There’s a lot of excitement in our upcoming season,” Edwards said. “I feel like each of the pieces is so strong in themselves that people are going to want to see them all.” www.AsoloRep.org / 941-351-8000

Florida Studio Theatre The only area theatre that won’t announce its season until October, FST nonetheless has some interesting plans afoot that it could share. The theatre recently hired Jason Bruffy to direct two new programs: the Actor Apprentice Program, and the New Play Development Program. “The FST literary staff are working year-round to solicit and read scripts from around the country and the world for production on FST’s mainstage,” Bruffy said. “My position is to take our new play development to the next level, and embrace the roots of what FST does best; develop and create new work.” Bruffy added that the theatre plans to build strong relationships with established

duced at FST. “This will then feed into the expansion of the Sarasota New Play Festival, and ultimately become a direct feeder to our mainstage, bringing the best quality plays by the most influential playwrights to Sarasota audiences,” Bruffy said. In addition, preparations are coming together for the January renovation of FST’s Gompertz Theatre. A new lobby is planned, along with additional seating, a café, and new bathrooms. www.FloridaStudioTheatre.org / 941-366-9000

Sarasota Orchestra An unparalleled musical experience is promised to Sarasota music lovers, as the Sarasota Orchestra commences a two-year search process for a new artistic director. Plans are in place to honor Maestro Leif Bjaland in this, his fifteenth and final season and welcome some of the country’s most critically acclaimed conductors to Sarasota. Patrons will enjoy programs of unprecedented variety and have the opportunity to sample the diverse styles and personalities of such distinguished conductors as Michael Stern, Grant Llewellyn, Carl St. Clair, Edwin Outwater, and Mel-Ann Chen. From Brahms, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Wagner to Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Schumann, and Mahler, there will be something in this season for everyone. Sarasota Ballet The subscription season opens on October 28 with a very different collaboration between the professional company and its affiliated Sarasota Ballet School in the American premiere of “Tchaikovsky’s Ballet Fantasy,” in which choreographer Matthew Hart imagines the composer interrupting his best-loved ballets (Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and Nutcracker), unwittingly causing comic chaos. This light-hearted ballet is matched with Peter Darrell’s highly dramatic “Othello” and a world premiere choreographed by one of the Sarasota Ballet’s talented dancers, Ricardo Graziano. In addition, ballet lovers won’t want to miss the Sarasota premiere of Agnes de Mille’s “Rodeo” set to a score by Aaron Copland evoking life in the pioneer West. Notably, Twyla Tharp’s most popular work, “Nine Sinatra Songs,” will bow in mid-April.

Now in its 12th year, the Troupe will present two world premiere musicals — “Love, Sung in the Key of Aretha,” and “Blackbird: The Josephine Baker Story” — along with a one-man original revue based on Sammy Davis, Jr., and the award-winning drama, “A Raisin in the Sun.” “For WBTT’s 2012 season, we will be telling the story of not only the challenges but the The multi-talented De’zhon Fields will

The Players Theatre This Sarasota mainstay will kick off its 82nd season in style, offering “Kiss Me Kate,” “Seussical,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Dear World,” “A Chorus Line,” “Noises Off,” and “The Full Monty.” “I am constantly on the look for great plays that have not graced our stage,” said Artistic Director Jeffery Kin. “While the shows may not be new, five of the seven Broadway Season shows are brand new to our stage.” In addition, this past summer the group introduced the Sarasota Silver Stars, a 50+ performing arts troupe. The troupe is comprised of two former groups: Sarasota Senior Theatre and The Players Follies. The troupe meets three times a week providing an outlet for retired performers to express themselves theatrically. The Players also introduced open captioning, enabling hearing impaired patrons to see the words on overhead projections, in addition to amplifying devices that the theatre provides.

“Our patrons have come to expect big productions and we plan to deliver.” Kerby added that he was most excited to host the local premiere of four new shows: “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas,” “Jerry’s Girls,” “Happy Days — a New Musical,” and “Ring of Fire — the Johnny Cash Musical. The troupe also plans to present classic theatrical favorites such as “Chicago,” “The Sound of Music,” “Evita,” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” In addition, the new Manatee Performing Arts Center is under construction at 502 3rd Avenue West in downtown Bradenton. The exterior finishing is nearly complete and the interior construction is about 70 percent complete. This past summer saw stucco and trim followed by the painting of the exterior bringing everyone a glimpse what the finished building will look like. When completed there will be two theaters, meeting and classroom space and a grand lobby that will accommodate 300 guests for special events. www.ManateePlayers.org / 941-748-0111

Venice Theatre Venice Theatre’s 2011-2012 Season is already well underway, having opened with a criticallyacclaimed Summer Stock production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” followed by “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in August. With four different series to choose from, (MainStage, Stage II, Cabaret and Generations) there are still 16 more shows to go on tap. Add to those a variety of national concert acts and special events, and you probably won’t find a performing arts organization in the area with more going on than Venice Theatre. Highlights of the season also include the world premiere of a play called “Stand by Your Van” (see the show, win a truck!), the Florida community theatre premieres of the coming-of-age rock musical “Spring Awakening” and the clever show-within-a-show, “[title of show].” Theatergoers looking for more familiar fare will love “Smokey Joe’s Café,” “The Music Man,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” and a multi-generational production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” www.VeniceStage.com / 941-488-1115

“The King and I” was a highly successful production at the Venice Theatre.

Sarasota Opera The 2011-2012 Sarasota Opera season will feature a season of returning greats mixed with new productions never before seen on the Sarasota Opera stage. Starting things off will be Puccini’s tragic love story “Madama Butterfly” running from October 28 – November 15. Opening February 11, 2012 and running through March 25th, the 2012 Winter Festival will bring Georges Bizet’s fiery “Carmen,” Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic “Lucia di Lammermoor,” the Sarasota Opera premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s tour de force “Otello,” and Samuel Barber’s intensely beautiful “Vanessa,” a continuation of the American Classics series and is being designed and constructed here in Sarasota. Scenes from an Interview:

Bruce Rodgers

by Gus Mollasis

To properly picture playwright and arts advocate Bruce Rodgers as the artistic force that he is, first think of a drummer who can gig with a cool jazz trio, or sit behind chicken wire in a country western joint ala the Blues Brothers, and then take his prominent seat in the middle of a world class orchestra. Comfortable in all those musical chairs, it prepared him for the life of a playwright who is unafraid to walk through any stage door and pursue the arch of the story, no matter where it takes him. Where it has taken him today is to Hermitage Artist Retreat, where as Executive Director, Bruce Rodgers helps assure that all artists are comfortable, equipped with the proper setting and tools they need to make art in whatever form they choose. Recently, I sat down with him and we looked at some of the scenes from an interview of his life. scenesarasota.com

Where were you born? Rochester, New York. My father retired from Kodak and my mother retired from Xerox. Were your parents involved in the arts? My father was an engineer who loved listening to music and my mom didn’t care much for classical music. They were not really involved in the arts and were middle-class working folks. They didn’t try to mold me to be like them and encouraged me to follow what I was interested in. I was a latch key kid which taught me to be very independent. Describe your first encounter with the arts and when you knew that you wanted the arts to be a big part of your life? It was in music. I started playing drums in fourth grade and by ninth grade I was admitted to the Eastman School of Music Prep Program. I knew I was going to be a musician. I had a wonderful teacher who pushed me and saw that I had some talent. Great teachers can give you the confidence you need to pursue something you should be doing in a more serious way. figure out our level of patriotism. Had I been drafted, I would have gone. I would not have been comfortable going to Canada. Are great artists made or born? Great artists are born and develop the talent they are born with. I was not innately talented in music. I worked hard. I feel more innately talented as a playwright. I saw musicians who already had it. They came to school with it, the artists with perfect pitch. What school does is refine the talent. The great artists have it. That’s what great talent is. What do you hope that the artists take away from their stay at Hermitage Artist Retreat? Whatever they need when they come. They all have different needs. Our job is to be sure we have a sense of what those needs are. We do everything we can to fulfill them. Some of them want to be left alone and need time, some need interaction with others. Artists are there at various stages of the process. Some are trying to figure out what they want to do next. Some come to finish a project they have been working on for a number of years. They come at all stages of their journey. It’s our strength of being small as an artist community. We form the residency to the artist rather than having the artist form to the residency. There are writers, painters, poets, composers, playwrights, sculptors, and visual artists. We house five artists at a time. They have time to be in their studio and do their work and time to interact with the other artists, especially artists that they usually don’t get to interact with. A composer and playwright together interacting and discovering things about themselves and their art is incredibly inspiring. What is your definition of art? I have a whole lecture that talks about this. An important component of art is metaphor. Art is an experience that’s larger than its literal self. It stands for something else. If there is one thing that is in the nature of art that is not in things that are not art, it is the sense of metaphor. It is something that has depth and rings of association that causes resonance in people. Truth and beauty are inherent in all great art. You sit on various artistic boards and councils and are a strong arts advocate in our community. Why should the arts be important for the rest of society? The arts have an ability to reflect society back onto itself. An unexamined life is not worth living. Artists are the truth tellers who force us to reflect on our society. You have won many awards and prizes over your career. What does presenting the Greenfield Prize to a worthy artist mean to you? What an incredible privilege it is to have created that prize as in investment in a future work. We purposely designed it to honor an artist by saying that you are someone who has the potential of creating something that is meaningful. We trust you, and we are giving this to you not only for what you have done in the past, but what your potential is for the future. The Greenfield Prize is not just a check. It’s the check, the residency, the partnership with any organization that would help move that work along, and the help of getting that work out into the world so that other people see it. It’s the beginning of a process, and we think you have something special to give to the artistic world. After all the pages have been written, the notes played and the final curtain lowered, how do you want to be remembered? That I have made a difference in peoples lives and that there was a reason why I was here.

The Visual Arts... Jorge Blanco

Sarasota resident Jorge Blanco (born March 21, 1945 in Caracas) was an artist from Venzuela before he emigrated into the United States in 1999. He has spent his professional career working as a sculptor, graphic designer and illustrator. His works are in public sites in the United States, Venezuela and Japan. Blanco began painting in 1967 and sculpting in the early 1970s. In the eyes of Blanco, however, he has been an artist since childhood. “I have been an artist all my life because - in my opinion- every child is an artist. I never stopped drawing or coloring,” said Blanco. His interest in threedimensional work is always at the forefront of his career. Blanco won a scholarship at the Neumann Institute in Caracas, Venezuela graduating with a degree in Industrial Design. After graduation he worked as a graphic designer. His first solo exhibition was in 1974, where he showed sculpture and drawings. He lived in Rome, Italy (1975–1979) where he continued to work in sculpture, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and drew political cartoons for the newspaper "L’Opinione". He participated in the Bordhigera Humor Salon (1978), winning the Dattero D’Argento and in the Monterotondo Sculpture Salon, where he was awarded the first prize for medium format sculpture. In 1979 Blanco returned to Caracas, Venezuela where he exhibited his sculptures and drawings at the Sofía Imber Museum of Contemporary Art. Blanco continued working in sculpture and he also designed and illustrated a children’s newspaper “El Cohete”. In 1980 was hired as the Art Director for the Caracas Children’s Museum (Art, Science and Technology, Museo de los Niños). During his 18 years at the Caracas Children’s Museum, Jorge Blanco created his character (The Castaway) in 1981. “The Castaway” is comic about a man trapped on an island. There are no words in the comic, just images of the character living on the island. The comic was originally printed in the newspaper “El Diario de Caracas.” The Comic has become the cover of notebooks, images of various models of phone cards, along with images of several t-shirts. After leaving the Caracas Children’s Museum, Blanco moved to the United States where he is still living today. Jorge receives commissions for large sculpture pieces and exhibits his art work often. ...so rich in objective, imagination and inspiration, SCENE proudly recognizes the passion and talent of local artists. Featured artists are selected by an independent panel organized by the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. to January 4, 2011 Jorge showed his “Punta en Blanco” exhibit at the Gallery Espacio Tierra Negra. Blanco’s early works were influenced by his teachers Gertrude Stein (Gego) and Cornelis Zitman and by the work of artists such as Auguste Herbin, Paul Klee and Joan Miró. He worked with unconventional materials such as lycra, rope, wood, mirrors combined with bronze. Blanco’s sculptures were and continue to be geometric studies, interpretations of his internal world. In 1992 Blanco began to explore color and metal as a primary material. According to Blanco, “If I was living in the desert in Africa, it might be impossible to do what I am doing. I am doing this because of my experience from the big city, my experience as a graphic designer and my studies in industrial design. It seems it was all put in a blender and my passion was developed.” Recently, Blanco’s sculpture, “Zephyrus”, was selected to be exhibited at Hilton Head, South Carolina. The inaugural Public Art Exhibition will be held late September through early December 2011 at the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island. Regional, national and international artists were invited to submit pieces to be on display during the event. scenesarasota.com

Our Local Arts & Culture Scene:

Engage Yourself

By Jim Shirley, Executive Director of the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County

I

recently had the pleasure of dining with a wonderful couple from Atlanta who are new residents in Sarasota. They are highly successful and dynamic and have the means to live anywhere in the world. When asked why they chose Sarasota, without hesita-

tion they said, “Because of the unbelievable arts scene here.” They went on to share how impressed they are with the vibrant attitude of our citizens and how stimulating it is to see people of all ages fully engaged in activities and organizations that reflect their passion. The descriptive word they chose about our community that captured my attention is en-

gagement. That is what arts and culture provide for the communities that embrace them. In his recent ARTSblog, Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy at Americans for the Arts, said, “The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They enable and inspire us — fostering creativity, goodness and beauty. They help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion or age.” In my role at the Arts & Cultural Alliance, I see the impact of this engagement on Sarasota County and what it means to our citizens. For example, Sarasota was recently designated as a partner city with the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for their Any Given Child initiative. This partnership will enhance the access to arts education in our schools. The Patterson Foundation has fostered a collaboration with several community partners to develop EdExploreSRQ, a school-based IT system that will empower teachers and students in our public school system to incorporate the arts as a part of their core curriculum. Scholarships, grants and support programs are offered through our two community foundations to help enrich the quality of our lives. Opportunities for the engagement of all citizens abound throughout the area with our community art centers,

“I encourage any of you seeking new passions to connect with our lively arts and culture scene. There is surely something

the Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning, and outreach programs with our many arts and cultural organizations. I encourage any of you seeking new passions to connect with our lively arts and culture scene. There is surely something among its many offerings that will engage and energize you. Participate anyway you can. Seek opportunities to become a volunteer, join a board of directors or write that book you have always wanted to write. Join your Arts and Cultural Alliance to demonstrate your belief that the arts are fundamental to our humanity and to our community. The satisfaction you will receive from engaging in activities and organizations you become passionate about is immeasurable.

Steals Downtown Dining the Show

By Susan Cullen

With the last quarter of the year ushering in a new season of entertainment at our local theatres, thoughts naturally turn to downtown dining, and with those ghastly parking meters shrouded for the time being, there’s no reason not to go.

to go, not the least of which is to check out the scene at the “new” Patrick’s, a few steps west on Main from Mattison’s. The place has been jumping with a lengthy 4 to 7 p.m. happy hour featuring some great drink prices and an array of generously sized $5 appetizers. “Our best seller is the ahi tuna appetizer,” says owner Jim

tangy feta cheese along with a drizzle of balsamic glaze for a sweet tart finish. Both the flatbread and a friend’s chicken quesadilla were large enough to ask for take-home boxes. Across Fruitville in the Rosemary District, Derek Barnes of Derek’s Culinary Casual is cooking up a new menu, which should be out this month, and he also will be doing his American Table series. “Look for a new tantalizing seasonal menu,” Barnes says. Meanwhile, with the weather continuing to sizzle, he says affordable wines are hot right now, particularly rosés. “People also are drinking more champagne because I think it is crisp and clean, and they’re moving for more flavor,” he says. “They’re also eating more raw, meaning beef Carpaccio and tuna tartare.” Over the summer, Derek’s has been dishing up a selection of delectable cold soups like mango and curry with a chilled blue crab salad, carrot and cumin with shrimp, avocado and a popcorn garnish, and beet soup with spiced apple mousse. “We have a nice tuna tartare with chilies and roasted garlic with cucumber sorbet

We asked around, and here’s what some of our town’s arts and entertainment movers and shakers are savoring these days:

“People love our fresh seafood and salad,” says Café Americano’s Eduardo Arizu. “They stop by our bar before they eat for a nice glass of wine or prosecco.

“I really like Libby’s blue cheese wedge salad. At the Bijou, they have a swordfish that’s very good that I get when I go there.” - Nate Jacobs, Founder/Artistic Director, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.

Month of Discovery Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar From James Shea’s Wine Room As we are right in the thick of summer here in Florida, most of us are dreading the high temperatures and the humidity that goes along with it. That is simply not the case for me as this is the most exciting part of the year. Here at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar we are about to unveil our new Wine list for the upcoming season, which we call “The Month of Discovery” and what a month it is! Every Friday in September we invite you to join us for a fabulous night of tasting our new wines with passed hors d oeuvres. There will be a nominal $25.00 charge to set a reservation and if you join us for dinner that evening we will give you a $25.00 credit towards dinner and your wine tasting will be free. I can’t think of a better way to spend Friday nights then with friends, food and of course great wines from around the world. We will also be holding our National Wine Dinner in September; be sure to check your emails for upcoming details. Many of our core classics will be returning to the list and boast an exciting new format that is sure to please everyone. I look forward to our journey as we discover great wines from around the globe together. Some new and exciting wines that will be offered on the new Fleming’s 100 are Franciscan Oakville Est. Chardonnay, Napa Valley, 2009; Paco & Lola, Albarino Rias Baixas, Spain, 2009; Eveninhg Land, California Blue Label, 2009 (Pinot Noir); Ladera Cabernet, Napa valley Sommelier Selection, 2009. We hope that you will join us for our Nights of Discovery.

From Chef Charlie Flint’s Kitchen Chef Charlie Flint recommends a simple dish to serve with a lighter white wine for the month of September: Poached shrimp with mango cucumber salad for two. For Shrimp: 8 large shrimp 1 quart water 2 tbsp Old Bay seasoning 1 lemon (split) 1 tbsp. kosher salt In medium pot combine water, Old Bay, lemon and salt. Bring to rolling boil then reduce to simmer, let cook for 15 minutes to develop flavor. Add peeled and deveined shrimp in to cooking liquid and simmer 3-4 minutes. Remove from liquid and serve either cool or warm. For Mango Salad: 1 ripe mango sliced 1 cucumber peeled, seeded and cut into half moons 1⁄2 cup orange segments with juice 1⁄2 cup radish sprouts 2 tbsp chopped cilantro 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Mix all ingredients and season with salt and pepper, allow juices from salad to disperse around plate. Garnish with flavored oil or balsamic reduction. Enjoy!

A NEW PET? By Dr. Anne Chauvet

So, you’re thinking about bringing an animal companion into your life. Taking in a new pet is a big responsibility and requires some thought before making this lifetime commitment. The same goes for selecting a veterinarian to care for the new addition to your family. Most people think of dogs or cats as pets, and the first thing to consider is your lifestyle and stage of life. Falling in love with a Great Dane is fine, but remember that it will take up an entire couch in a small apartment and take YOU for a walk. Likewise if you are very busy, training a

puppy or caring for an active dog, like the wonderful Australian Cattle Dog that needs walked three times a day, is probably not for you. A cat may be a better choice. Allergies also must be considered. If a family member is allergic to cats or bird dander, there may be crossover to dogs or even rabbits. The time to find out is not after you bring a new pet home. Cost also can be a factor so be sure you can afford to care for your pet over the long term. Dogs generally can be more expensive than cats, and large dogs are more expensive than small ones in terms of feeding, flea medications and even medical treatments. If getting a

pure bred dog, you should know what health issues they may be prone to, like hip dysplasia for German Shepherds or skin issues for Bichon Frise. Keep in mind a “designer” dog, like my Shih Tzu/Poodle cross, may harbor disorders from each breed. scenesarasota.com

Bottom line: Never get a pet on impulse. Do your research before choosing, and never ever give a pet as a gift. It is a huge responsibility for which your family member or friend may not be ready. Choosing a veterinarian also should involve a bit of research because this is a relationship that ideally will last for many years. People may want a vet who is close and convenient or one who specializes in cats. Others like going to a large practice while some appreciate a more boutique approach at a smaller practice. Whatever your preference, visit a couple of vets’ offices and the emergency clinics they refer to after hours. All should be clean, smell good and have friendly, helpful staff. Ask questions. What kind of medical care does a vet consider a must for your pet? Different vets have different approaches. Are they focused on short-term care or do they look at the long term? Also, if a personal relationship is important to you, ask how many of the doctors are permanent versus how many relief vets are used.
