from the • P u B lis H e R t is that time of year again! Sarasota Scene Magazine’s guide to all things arts & culture is here for the 2022-2023 season. We are all looking forward to a banner year. While 2022 brought with it some wonderful performances, great exhibitions, and spectacular galas, it still had a touch of a shadow brought by the lingering pandemic. Many events changed dates, a couple went back to being virtual, and attendance was not at the usual 90+ percent levels. This year we have a wonderful season ahead of us with a robust schedule for our arts and culture organizations. Community pride will shine through as our institutions, not-for-profit organizations, and foundations raise money the old-fashioned way: in-person! When I think of the arts, I can’t help but think of the amenities we had when my children were young. Growing up in Toronto, they had access to a good education, sports, and civic organizations. Among the finest were the Ontario Science Center, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Living Arts Center, Stage West, Place des Arts, and Royal Alexandre Theatre. We were fortunate to visit, be a member, or enjoy regular performances as a family, and it truly helped immerse my children into a deep appreciation of the arts. I remember one particular instance where my family enjoyed a group sponsored performance of The Nutcracker during the Christmas season. My then six-year-old daughter sat beside my boss at the time (the Publisher of the Mississauga News) and, having watched the Care Bears Nutcracker Suite more times than I could count, narrated the whole ballet to him. In another instance, we took the kids to the ROM when the King Tut exhibition was in town. Although we had discussed the exhibition casually at home, I hadn’t expected them to retain much, being so young. But I was surprised when both my son and daughter remembered key artifacts and shared their knowledge with their grandmother. Within the month, both children had incorporated their experience into a school assignment. They were both overall more into sports and friends, but I believe the continued exposure to museums, galleries, and cultural centers was a key part in their maintaining an interest in the arts and history. And that is so important! I’m a firm believer that immersing kids and teens into the arts helps them become more well-rounded thinkers and creative problem solvers. In this issue, you’ll meet Sam Stahlmann who, though a young man himself, has created a similar environment for Sarasota homeschool students by forming the Learning and Families Theatre Troupe. The troupe is a completely student-run group that has performed at several theaters and locations around the area. The troupe

Also in this issue, you can’t mention “creative problem solving” without bringing up Ringling College of Art and Design. It is no secret that we have a world renowned school for those in the field of art and design right in our backyard. We’ve caught up with a few local Ringling College alumni to discuss what they’ve been up to since walking the stage, and why they’ve chosen make Sarasota their home. We also talked to Virginia Shearer, Executive Director of the renowned Sarasota Art Museum, to discuss some of the progress she’s made since working at the museum, as well as some of the upcoming exhibitions for the 2022-2023 season. As for me, I’m looking forward to the upcoming season. I can’t wait to dust off my tux and contribute to some of the wonderful events that benefit our community. One of which, I will actively be participating in! I have been asked to be a Soleman at the Forty Carrots Wine, Women, and Shoes event in November. This will be my first time attending the iconic event, and I couldn’t be more excited to take part.
Michelle Kapreilian and her team provide a service to the community with a focus on family and their young children. I have seen their service expand over the last few years and the support the families receive is unparalleled. In the coming months, as part of my due diligence as Soleman, I will be reminding people of the great work Forty Carrots does, and will be sharing a wine list come October. I will ask that you indulge in purchasing some wine which benefits a great cause. Whether or not you are attending Wine, Women, and Shoes, it is important to give and take part in the season’s events, whatever it is. That is what is so special about Sarasota—how many options there really are for giving back and kicking back. Now that my children have children of their own, I can’t help but look at our art and culture guide and imagine what I will bring them to see next time they visit. Whether it’s arts, culture, or a combination of both, there is no shortage of events to indulge in. Take your pick and enjoy the Scene.

When Teri first came to our community, it was to help Gulf Coast Community Foundation move from a nascent organization into a powerhouse for positive change.
By Ryan G. Van Cleave
As president and CEO, she did exactly that, helping the foundation award nearly $200 million in grants and initiatives that received regional and statewide attention during her 13-year tenure. “I’m a startup person,” Teri explains about her 2015 career change when she joined the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation as its first CEO. “I like to build things and create a culture. I want to get the right people in play and show what an organization can do.”
• THE EFFECT
While Sarasota is known for having a generous philanthropic spirit, certain issues—hunger, environment, education, to name just a few—remain a challenge for our community. That’s why Chuck and Margie Barancik decided to launch a family foundation in 2014. “We can’t change the world,” they realized, “but we can change little pieces of it and hope for a ripple effect.” To create those needed ripple effects, they brought in a philanthropic expert: Teri Hansen.
As a former educator, Margie had a soft spot for schools, teachers, and children, which led to the TIME (Time to Inspire Margie’s Educators) fellowship. The financial support of this 2022 initiative—awarding as many as Margery Barancik
She was impressed by the Baranciks both for their quiet, humble lives as well as their mission “to make a meaningful difference in the areas of education, humanitarian causes, arts and culture, environment, and medical research in Sarasota and beyond.” Teri knew she was the right person to help them create long-term, systematic changes.
While some foundations seem to sit on money, the Barancik Foundation is responsive and engaged. They partner with government and local groups to make a difference, such as how they partnered with 70+ local groups and organizations to create the First 1,000 Days
The Foundation also responded to the growing mental health crisis with Here4YOUth, which sought to improve the mental health system of care to more effectively meet the needs of children and youth.
Suncoast initiative, which explored how our community could better provide families with the foundational support that’s so vital for babies during those critical early years.
25 fellowships to local educators—has the goal of honoring their efforts and helping renew their commitment to teaching. Through this fellowship, a teacher recruitment/retention program, and other initiatives, the Barancik Foundation has invested more than $7 million into professional development for Sarasota County Schools.
To note just one of many forthcoming efforts, the Foundation is launching a community news collaborative this fall—a not-for-profit newsroom with an editor and five or six reporters who will provide and push out content to distributors such as The Sarasota Herald-Tribune , The Observer , and Sarasota Scene Magazine. The goal is to ensure that our community has the journalism we need to cover things that are important to civic life.
After 60 years of marriage, Chuck and Margie met an untimely fate when they were both killed in a car crash in 2019. Their legacy of giving lives on however through the Foundation and their children, who work closely with Teri and the Foundation. With Teri at the helm, the commitment to shape our community and enrich the lives of all people continues.
“Everybody’s cutting way back and we need somebody covering things like the school board and County Commission meetings,” Teri notes. “We need to ensure we have an informed citizenry, and this will provide a lot of real news for people to help make decisions about

Many people didn’t realize the kind of wealth the Baranciks had. Chuck, a Chicago native, had a knack for buying and developing companies that earned him hundreds of millions of dollars. But you wouldn’t know it from how they lived, since they preferred to help from behind the scenes. The spotlight simply didn’t appeal to them.
34 SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2022 their community. Plus, it’ll be a not-for-profit, so it won’t have an angle. They won’t be worrying about whether someone will still buy ads from them—they’ll just cover what needs to be covered and do what needs to be done.”
• PH il A nt HR o PY •
“One of the biggest compliments Chuck ever gave me was that he never dreamed the Foundation could be doing the kind of things it was doing,” Teri says. “He was SO happy.” Yet Teri knows that philanthropy isn’t the answer to everything—it’s just one piece of the larger puzzle. It takes philanthropy, citizenry, and government
“A woman who played bridge with Margie for more than 20 years learned about their wealth when it was announced that I was leaving Gulf Coast to run their foundation,” Hansen says. “The woman admitted that ‘I had no idea they had that kind of money, and I’ve known them for 30 years.’” That was a goal they had—lead a normal life. They didn’t want to live in a huge estate or with the trappings of great wealth that might separate them from friends and family.
As impactful as the Foundation is, perhaps the most telling legacy of Chuck and Margie is their three children.
“Chuck got into philanthropy by watching his children get involved with volunteering,” Teri explains. “They were the ones who taught him philanthropy.” Had the children simply been living their own lives like so many other young people, the Foundation might never have been created.
Even more impressive is how they handled the $700 million estate. They didn’t squabble over how it was to be divided. Together, they agreed that the money wasn’t theirs to take. All along, their parents’ plan was to give it away, and the children always supported that plan. They simply wanted to remain involved in the Foundation to ensure that more “little changes and ripple effects” happen, just like their parents intended. Just like their children taught them to do.

More than any other visual medium, women have played vital and sustained roles in the making and advancement of photography since its invention. Their contribution to this medium has been greatly Museumunderemphasized.ofFineArtsSt.
Featured photographers include Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879), Gertrude Käsebier, one of the premier portraitists at the turn of the century (1852–1934), Margaret Bourke-White, the first woman hired at Life Magazine, and the first woman to fly combat missions during WWII (1904–1971), Diane Arbus (1923–1971), Sally Mann (b. 1951), and Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976), as well as lesserknown figures in the field.
“ From their rise as professional photographers at the dawn of the twentieth century to the pioneers of today, women have consistently and persistently overcome sexism and societal constraints to become driving forces in the development of the medium. More than revealing the particularities of womanhood, these photographers have added their own nuances to a visual language which in turn, has greatly enriched the medium. ”

SEPTEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 41 Since it opened in December 2019, the Sarasota Art Museum—housed in the 1927 Sarasota High School building on South Tamiami Trail—has served as a new home for art, art lovers, and students. With 15,000 square feet of dedicated exhibition gallery space, an auditorium, sculpture courtyard, and extensive classroom facilities, the contemporary art museum has been impressive from the Newstart.Executive Director Virginia Shearer knows all about it because she’d been following the project from the planning stages. She knew the area already, having worked as the Director of Education at The Ringling until 2003. The High Museum recruited her to come to Atlanta and build a whole suite of public programs and initiatives, but she still liked to return to Sarasota to vacation with her family and watch how The Ringling developed. Each time she visited, she also checked on the progress of the Sarasota Art Museum because it was so exciting. “I love contemporary art,” she says,” and I love working with living artists. Plus, it was amazing to watch the community build something that was going to be such a special legacy.” Fast forward a few years, and a search firm wanted to assess her interest in the leadership position at the Sarasota Art Museum. “The more we talked about it, the more I realized I could make a real contribution there and transfer a lot of my experiences, skills, and connections.”
Since August 2021, that’s exactly what she’s been doing. The Sarasota Art Museum is unique because of its connection to Ringling College of Art and Design. Shearer notes that “college and university museums are a subset of the larger art museum landscape, and it’s extremely rare to have one that’s not located on the campus.”
Being a few miles down the road from the main campus is a challenge, yes, but she saw the amazing promise and opportunity for Ringling College students. “The students don’t have to travel to a big city to get exposed to contemporary art—we’re bringing it to them. We’re doing it at such a high level that the community wants to support that.” One of the goals Shearer has is to create participatory experiences that make the spaces and places inside the museum come alive for museum visitors and to

provide opportunities for guests to wrestle with big ideas and participate ways that help guests reach new understandings. While some people like the old-school idea of museums being a quiet place where people shuffle past exhibits in a self-directed manner, she says that the vast majority of people learn by looking, listening, and talking with others. “I’m always thinking about ways we can help visitors personally connect with the works of art and give our guests a way to participate and be part of meaning-making within the museum.”
The artists are brothers who create their work with the public. A big part of their practice is social, so Shearer is having them do a brief residency which includes making art with the community. The idea of bringing in artists to work directly with visitors is part of the DNA of the museum. It’s something they’ve been doing well before the museum was operational and the project leaders were trying to drum up interest in restoring the old Sarasota High School building. “That kind of educational opportunity is also part of my practice as an educator, curator, and museum professional,” she adds.
An example of this is the first fall 2022 exhibition, called Steven and William Ladd: Lead with a Laugh
“I’m always thinking about ways we can help visitors personally connect with the works of art and give our guests a way to participate and be part of meaning-making within the museum.”
.
SEPTEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 43
Shearer is making another change by moving from longer exhibitions to shorter ones that offer more variety. “Most museums are changing exhibitions every 13 or 14 weeks,” she explains, but the Sarasota Art Museum was changing every 20 to 24 weeks. And one time, the entire museum was taken over by a single artist. “I prefer to create a sense of urgency for people in the museum to come back,” she says. “We want this to be a community hub and destination. We want it to be vibrant, and the best way to make it vibrant is to have a robust, changing exhibition schedule.” To that end, she’s added a third cycle of exhibitions each year, which will help add value to the overall museum experience and create even more reasons for people to become a Anothermember.way the Sarasota Art Museum is becoming a destination site is the addition of the Bistro. It’s an elevated
“We’re bringing in art from around the globe, and we’re inviting artists to come into this space and create something new for Sarasota,” Shearer says. “The visitor is central to all we do, and everyone’s welcome to be part of this amazing place.” For more information about the Sarasota Museum of Art, please visit www.sarasotamuseum.org or call 941.309.4300.
It’s clear that the Sarasota Art Museum is designed to make everyone feel comfortable coming together, whether it’s to experience the art, have lunch at the Bistro, or learn something new through the museums’ education programs or through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute which is housed there. It’s also a place to participate, whether that’s taking a class in their amazing ceramics studio which is adjacent to the Bistro or by adding your name to the 50+ volunteers who support the 20 full-time employees that work to make this a world-class museum in our own backyard.
44 SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2022 dining experience where most of the food ingredients are Florida sourced. Shearer says, “Looking at art takes energy. You need brain food, so the Bistro is a big part of that.” They also offer a rotating art exhibition program in the Bistro. Additionally, the Bistro’s chef creates a special menu based on and inspired by the exhibitions. While some might think contemporary art isn’t for them, Shearer says that’s completely untrue. People don’t need a deep knowledge base in art to really get something out of the experience. “What museums are designed to do is pose questions, provoke curiosity, and inspire you. That’s something contemporary art does well because the artists of today are thinking about many of the things we’re all thinking about, and they’re feeling the feelings that we’re feeling and living the moments that we’re living. And they’re bold enough to express themselves in two- and three-dimensional ways, using media like video or performance or installation. I think that it can be so rewarding if people give themselves time and the credit to know that however you enter into the work, that means something. You could do it again and again and go deeper every time.”

Most Sarasotans know that we have one of the world’s premier art schools right in our back yard. Ringling College of Art and Design is world-renowned for producing top notch professionals in their fields. Greg Rumph graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 1998 where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he moved to Sarasota in 1984 with his family and has been here ever since. “Simply put, that’s why Sarasota is home!” says Rumph, “I’ve been extremely lucky to have landed in a spot that is rich in art influences, and to have been exposed to great art teachers from high school through Ringling College.” His artistic journey began by creating copies of his father’s work when he was growing up, and eventually learning from doing master copies (reproductions of master artists’ work) while honing his craft at Ringling.
Shortly after graduation, he was asked to be a substitute teacher at Booker Middle School where he fell in love with the kids, the steady paycheck, and the benefits. Now, fifteen years later, he’s moved into an administration that has seen him work at three high schools. Currently, he is responsible for the Visual and Performing Arts magnet program at Booker High. Aside from his education work, he still finds time to freelance with his illustration around family time.

From a very young age, Scott Wren loved to draw. Years later, he attended Ringling College of Art and Design, but it wasn’t until his senior year that he became interested in the themed entertainment field.
Not soon after did Debra get a job offer at Disney Imagineering in Orlando, steering the couple back to the Sunshine State. Scott, upon leaving GSD&M, stepped into Wrenhouse Design, adding more projects to the ever-growing list of entertainment industry clients. In 2011, with this expanded workload, Debra rejoined Wrenhouse as well.
“Since we no longer needed to reside in Orlando, and I always loved living in Sarasota, I happily returned with my family in 2012.
We have been very fortunate to continue providing design services for many leaders in the themed entertainment industry including Universal Creative, Walt Disney Imagineering, Disney Yellow Shoes, AECOM, EA Sports, Raven Sun Creative and many more.“
“I was recruited out of Ringling as an ‘Apprentice’ by Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale, California, where I worked on a multitude of projects located in Orlando, Paris, Anaheim, and Tokyo. Not only did Disney provide the experience and training I needed to develop my career further, but it is also where I met my wife, Debra.”
Wren’s career path took a slight detour in 2006 when his family, then with a young son, moved to Austin, Texas. Here, he became an Art Director for GSD&M Advertising while Debra started a business called Wrenhouse Design, which would later be run by them both.
“We chose Sarasota for so many reasons. I have great memories of my time in college. The laid back atmosphere, the art community, friendly people and the endless days of sunshine quickly come to mind, making it a wonderful place to raise a family. We could have moved anywhere, but one of the most significant motivators for choosing Sarasota was the possibility of extending a helping hand to the many talented students attending Ringling College.
I am very proud to say that, after living here for 10 years, we have a strong relationship with the school and do whatever we can to help the next generation of artists and designers.”

56 SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2022 Selina Bostic is a graphic designer based out of North Port, Florida. After moving from Ann Arbor, Michigan, she began her artistic career at Ringling College of Art and Design where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design. During her time at Ringling, Selina won a Gold Student ADDY Award for her collaboration on the MiSuits project, specifically on the social media team. She has also collaborated to rebrand Shelf Indulgence, a used bookstore/coffee shop located in Sarasota, Florida.
WHY SARASOTA?
“In March 2020, when COVID-19 was starting to become serious and everything in the design world was shutting down, I was in the middle of my senior year at Ringling College and my post-graduation future was looking very uncertain. Originally I didn’t see myself staying in Sarasota after my time at Ringling, but with how the world was at the time, I had to stay local. During that time picking up freelance jobs, contributing with Sarasota Scene, and now at Feld Entertainment, plus becoming an AAF Suncoast board member, I came to the realization that I could be just as or more successful in my design career staying in Sarasota without making a big jump to a major city and starting all over immediately after graduating during a global pandemic. Plus I could stay close to my family, the friends I’ve made during and after Ringling, the beautiful artistic community that Sarasota has to offer, and the beaches!”
Currently, Selina is working as a graphic designer at Feld Entertainment. Feld Entertainment is the worldwide leader in presenting and producing live touring family entertainment experiences that bring people together. Their properties include Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Monster Jam, Monster Energy Supercross, Disney on Ice, Marvel Universe Live, Sesame Street Live, and Jurassic World Live Tour. In June 2022, Selina was inducted onto the American Advertising Federation (AAF) Suncoast Board as their social media and communications chair. She is also a contributing designer with Sarasota Scene Magazine and freelances in her spare time.

60 SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2022 Finding Direction Sam Stahlmann and the Learning and Families Theatre Troupe
By Christy Pessemier
“I was so impressed with the kids. They did such a good job of turning that little couch into a play.”
Sam Stahlmann
SEPTEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 61 Sam Stahlmann didn’t always plan to be a musical and theater director. Though he grew up performing at the Sarasota Opera, he hadn’t considered using his skills and talents to influence so many young people as well as the local surrounding community. The opportunity came up when he was a 14-year-old looking at earning merit badges as a boy scout. Stahlmann was required to earn 13 merit badges. Out of those 13, nine of them were his choice, and one of the options was to direct a play.
“Everyone was committed and showed up to practice. No one quit,” Stahlmann said.
Stahlmann, now a college student, continues to direct LAF’s theater troupe. As a 501c3 non-profit organization, the troupe pays for production-related expenses through fundraisers Stahlmann organizes to cover costs. The costs of tickets also go toward the plays and musicals.
His hard work paid off when the Selby Library agreed to allow them to use one of their rooms for rehearsals. When the group hit the limit for how many times they could reserve the library’s room, Stahlmann’s house became the only remaining option.
“I remember sitting there and all at once this play came to me,” he said. “I had just read The Importance of Being Earnest and I thought we could do that.”
So he pulled together eight kids from his boy scout troop and homeschool group and went to the board of LAF (Learning and Families homeschool co-op) with a proposal to start a student-run theater troupe. The board voted on it and approved Stahlmann’s request, but told him they couldn’t give him any money or a place for them to rehearse.
Stahlmann was determined to make his idea a reality, and he knew he’d somehow find a place in Sarasota they could use to practice for their upcoming performance.
“We had a small stage and a little couch to use,” he said.
By the third semester, LAF’s little theater troupe had grown to 25 students. By the second year, they had doubled in size.
When it was time for their first performance, a full house of 125 people showed up.
Some of the recent performances included the musical, Oliver! , costs for which the licensing alone was $2,000.
Stahlmann also hired a dance instructor to show him how to dance, and he took that knowledge and choreographed the Eachmusical.playaverages around 35 to 40 students, though in some productions, they’ve had as many as 50 kids involved between actors, musicians, and set design crew. At times, so many LAF students audition that Stahlmann has to put them on a wait-list, though he does his best to find places for kids who desperately want to be in a play.
Stahlmann has witnessed many of his students who initially struggled with shyness completely transform after being involved in one musical. Many had never considered singing onstage before joining. He recalls one performance in particular where the entire cast was “Iaffected.always get very emotional at the end of my shows,” Stahlmann confessed. “It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it is. At the end of one of the recent plays, I realized half the cast was sobbing. It’s such an adrenaline rush when it’s over, knowing everyone worked so hard and loved being part of something like this together. It’s the first time in their lives they’ve ever experienced something like Thoughthis.”a few have gone on to study theater in college, others who are focusing on different areas of study have expressed gratitude for the opportunities LAF’s theater troupe has brought into their lives. “Even if students have no desire to pursue a career in theater, they learn so many things they’ll take with them in their life ahead, like teamwork and public speaking,” Stahlmann explained. “Learning music is one of the biggest brain workouts you’ll ever get, and it’s also an outlet for Stahlmanncreativity.”admitsthat he enjoys singing opera as an outlet for stress-relief himself. Benefit Concert
The LAF Theatre Troupe is unique in that there aren’t many of them in the homeschool world in the state of Florida, let alone the country. Providing a rare and unique opportunity for homeschool students to learn and experience theater, dance, performance, and musicals is something Stahlmann is proud of. Aside from that, Stahlmann feels the experience students get when they learn to sing can often be life-changing for those who didn’t realize their musical abilities. “One thing I learned through directing musicals is that everyone has the ability to sing loudly and powerfully,” he said. “They may have to work at it a little harder, but anyone can do it. It’s just a matter of finding out where everything fits with your voice.”
LAF’s theater troupe differs from public school theater in the way it’s designed. All aspects of the troupe are studentrun, including play selection and direction, set design, sound and lighting, costumes and makeup, choreography, fundraising, and anything tied to the production of performances. A student-led team composed of a director, assistant director, choreographer, and technical director is also selected annually under Stahlmann’s direction.
62 SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2022
What started out as a club of eight kids is now one of the most sought-after homeschool programs in the area. This will be Stahlmann’s last year as director and producer of LAF’s theater troupe. He’s invested over 2,500 hours of volunteer work running the troupe and was hired by LAF as a paid facilitator this past year after four years of volunteering.
Though he didn’t plan to come back for another year, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to direct The Hunchback of Notre Dame . After this year, his plans are to focus on his musical and directing career. Stahlmann’s hope is that the vision he had in the very beginning never dies. His goal has always been to bring together a tight-knit group of students to work together to create a strong love of student-led theater. “It’s going to be bittersweet leaving after this year,” Stahlmann admitted. “Directing and producing are two of the hardest jobs I’ve ever had in my life. At times, I’ve overworked myself, but it’s showed me that I love directing and I can’t live without it. It’s my life.” For more information on the Learning and Families Theater Troupe, please visit learningandfamilies.org/theatre-troupe.
“To sing opera is physically one of the best feelings ever,” he shared. “Even when I’m in my own house, to experience filling the whole room with my voice to the point that the windows start to shake…it’s exhilarating!”
SEPTEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 63
Currently a student at SCF, Stahlmann is heading toward a degree in vocal performance and plans to continue as an opera singer. Eventually, he’d like to open up a theater of his own and continue directing plays and musicals. He also teaches voice and piano, as well as a program called Kids Rock for four to seven-year-olds at the Sarasota Music Compound. The compound is a strong supporter of LAF and has sponsored many of their performances.
With plays scheduled for the fall and spring each year, the LAF Theatre Troupe isn’t slowing down. Fall enrollment fills up quickly as more and more students get involved. Spring musicals are chorus-heavy and can allow for up to 60 students in the chorus alone, so it’s easier for students who can’t make it into a fall play to participate in a spring musical. So far, the troupe has performed The Importance of Being Earnest , Robin Hood , Peter Pan: A Musical Adventure , A Dickens Christmas Carol, Shrek the Musical JR, Three Knights & The Magical Sword , and Oliver!

So, my friends nicknamed me Beneva. A few years later, I was asked to do a benefit for CAN Community Health in drag and needed a name to perform under, and the obvious choice was Beneva Fruitville. The rest is history. What’s the story behind Drag Queen Bingo?
Anyone who’s spent more than a moment in our community has surely heard about—or witnessed!—Drag Queen Bingo which features the off-color antics of Beneva Fruitville, one of Sarasota’s biggest and bawdiest stars. The bingo + comedy + burlesque show has been a hit from the start and has become one of the longest-running live shows in town. My wife, in particular, considers attending one to be an annual pilgrimage of sorts. Yet Beneva does more than just host the best bingo event going. She’s also run the “Drag Wars and Talent Show” competition, served as a foul-mouthed, anything-goes docent for a “Remix the Ringling” museum gallery tour, and much, much more. In short, if there’s a crowd to be had and there are opportunities for indelicacy, odds are that Beneva Fruitville might be game to do her thing.
SEPTEMBER 2022 | SARASOTA SCENE 99
Quite simply, I was a professional musical theater actor, and I was offered a three-show contract at a professional theater here. That was the Golden Apple Dinner Theater? Yes. I began working at the Golden Apple in 2004 in a production of Chicago , then continued in Wonderful Town , Cats , Footloose , and so on until 2012 when the theater closed. Where/when did you get the idea of becoming Beneva Fruitville?
In 2018, I was hired by the Ringling Museum as a part of their Ringling After Dark series to give a comedic tour of a wing of the museum. After working directly with the museum curator and other professionals at the museum, we created an interactive, ridiculous event that was sold out six weeks before the actual event and was so revered it made the New York Times for its novelty and success. What initially brought you to Sarasota?
When I first moved here, the theatre I was working for had rehearsal/dance space in the shopping center on the corner of Beneva and Fruitville. I told my friends at the time “Beneva Fruitville, that sounds like a Drag name!”
I began doing Bingo as a fill-in for some friends way back in the day at a place called the Canvas Cafe. We made national headlines and became the beginning of Sarasota’s sound ordinance issues. After harassment and pressure, Canvas Cafe decided they didn’t want us anymore, so we moved to Horsefeathers. From there we went to the Golden Apple Dinner Theater, The Players Theatre, and finally ended up at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre which ironically BY RYA n G . VA n cle AV e

Starting in an Off-Broadway show, with my name in lights on the marquee and coming out of the stage door after the show and signing a real Playbill program of people who were waiting to meet me after the show.
Let’s find out more about the story behind Beneva Fruitville. You’ve been in showbiz for 2+ decades. What are some of the highlights?
I was hired to entertain for American Theatre Critics Association’s annual conference in 2020 while the world was in lockdown so I did a virtual show of singing, comedy, and bingo for theater critics from across the entire country.
Frank Rizzo, theater critic for Variety, emailed me personally to thank me for my work and called me “…such great fun!”

I think my favorite story from Bingo is when a nun, in her full habit, came to my bingo show and had a blast. Hilarious!
What’s your dream Beneva-Fruitville-headliner event?
Clearly, you’ve invested a ton of time into becoming a makeup pro. What’s your best tip? It’s perfectly fine to do a basic neutral look—you don’t need to look like a clown to do drag.

What’s the most important thing people should know or understand about drag queens? That we’re simply entertainers. Just because you may have seen us in a nightclub or in nightlife, it doesn’t mean that all we’re relegated to that. We’re full-fledged, diversely talented entertainers of varying types and deserve to be treated with respect and not be sexualized. Drag queens belong in the library, the classroom, and in the political arena—there are plenty of clowns there already!

102 SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2022 We’ve all heard of the Hermitage Artist Retreat, but most don’t realize its real importance and impact. Andy Sandberg, who’s served as its Artistic Director and CEO since December 2019, points out that it’s a leading national arts organization that brings major visibility to Sarasota and the entire Gulf Coast region because it’s the only major arts organization here that’s exclusively committed to the creation and development of new work. “While many of the arts, cultural, and education partners and collaborators we work with recognize the importance of new work or may offer new work festivals, the Hermitage is the only organization in our Gulf Coast region that is 100% about supporting that early-stage work and championing artists in the creation and development of new work across all artistic What’sdisciplines.”exciting

INSPIRING THE ARTISTS OF TOMORROW: THE HERMITAGE ARTIST RETREAT
is that people can see these new works in their early stages. Sure, it’s not a multimillion-dollar production, but who doesn’t want to witness a top-tier creative baring their heart and soul in a very exposed and trusted environment? “At our events,” Sandberg says, “we often say if there are any New York Times critics in the
“Experience” is the key word. For the artists, they get the experience of focused, quiet, safe time to work. For the rest of us, we get to experience about 60 live programs a year that happen all throughout the region. Every one of them has an educational component, because what’s being offered isn’t finished products or polished productions. Instead, the Hermitage is offering sneak peeks into works in process from leading artists from all around the world in different disciplines. “So, you might see the early stages of a playwright’s work before it goes on to Broadway or an early snippet of a composition before it goes on to Lincoln Center or elsewhere,” explains Sandberg. Nearly all of the programs have a Q&A component, and many are direct school outreach initiatives. One of those that launched last year was the Hermitage @ Booker series, which pairs Hermitage artists with Booker High School’s Visual & Performing Arts program.

Luke Stewart Booker High VPA Ashley Jackson at Selby Gardens Paula Vogel

The series began with jazz bassist Luke Stewart who shared an improvisational selection of his music, then he led a jam session with local artists and students. He also discussed his creative process and talked about how to forge a career in the world of music. “It was a great success,” reports Sandberg. “Luke Stewart is considered one of the top jazz musicians in the country, and he’s an educator and community activist as well. It was a really cool opportunity for the students to engage directly with him. We also had Paula Vogel in residence at the Hermitage, who is a living legend of the theater, a Pulitzer and Tony winner—plus a theater Hall of Famer. She came and spoke to the students at Booker about how to write a play.” These events often happen in Booker’s outdoor courtyard because they’re meant to engage the entire community. But the Hermitage also does numerous individual classroom visits that aren’t part of the public program or concert series. “Sometimes our artists are interested in talking to a smaller group of students and a particular class might have an opportunity to engage with an artist in a field that is exciting to them,” Sandberg says. “Because they have such a robust visual and performing arts program, the students at Booker really appreciate the value of getting to meet some of these truly toptalent artists.”
With the mission of the Hermitage being “to inspire and foster the most influential and culturally consequential art and artists of our time,” figuring out who to invite is a crucial part of the equation. That obligation falls on the Hermitage’s National Curatorial Council who are tasked with identifying artists who are forward thinking, driven, and can make the most use of this time. “They’re told to pick from an open slate of thousands of brilliant, talented artists,” says Sandberg. “As someone who gets to be a fly on the wall during those conversations, I can say that it’s not necessarily just about what the artists are working on. It’s also about how they might maximize the time, and who needs this opportunity to elevate their work or their artistry.” The curators also keep an eye toward diversity of geography, ethnicity, gender, race, sexuality. From looking at current and past fellows, the Hermitage has one of the most extraordinarily diverse populations of any arts organization. As part of their commitment to supporting artists, the Hermitage offers two of the largest arts commissions in the country. Since 2008, they’ve offered the Hermitage Greenfield Prize which gives an annual $30,000 award for future work in theater, music, and visual art. The winner receives a Hermitage residency and has two years to complete their commission. For example, Helga Davis, the 2019 winner of the Hermitage Greenfield Prize, just premiered her multi-screen film, performance, and music installation “Ocean Body” at the Hermitage in March 2022. “Helga wanted a chorus and performers as part of her piece,” says Sandberg. “We thought it would be a great opportunity to engage the students of New College and their theater and music programs. They loved it because they got to work with brilliant artists like Helga and her collaborators. They were all part of the experiment together.” There’s also the Hermitage Major Theater Award, which gives an annual $35,000 commission to a playwright to create an original work of theater. The winner receives a six-week residency to develop the new work, and they later have an inaugural reading or workshop in a leading arts and cultural center such as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, or London.
Andy Sandberg STARs and Boys and Girls Clubs
But that’s the wonder that is the Hermitage. It puts an international spotlight on what’s going on here.
Sandberg admits, “Fortunately, I got to come in and inherit an organization that had built a robust history over the prior 16 years, and we’re now approaching our 20th anniversary season, which is exciting.” He’s come to love the Sarasota art scene. “Still, we need to recognize that not everyone outside of our bubble understands and appreciates what’s going on within our 30-mile radius.”
In short, thanks to the Hermitage, artists are finding out about Sarasota and falling in love with what’s happening here. Sandberg says, “It’s one of the coolest things about this arts ecosystem that we live in.”

“80% of the artists who come through here haven’t heard of Sarasota,” he says. “But because they’ve come to the Hermitage, that’s led to 20 different exhibits or special performances at The Ringling Museum. It’s led to various productions for a number of local theaters. It’s led to artists returning for a New Music New College event.”

Venice Art Center has been a cultural destination for more than 67 years, and it continues to surprise and delight. Back then, a group of 28 artists in Venice decided to put on an art exhibit. They held their first successful exhibition in a small beach house, and formed the Venice Art League. This would blossom into the Venice Art Center. With 12 exhibits annually, hundreds of classes for adults and children, 50 teachers of all disciplines, 1,400 members, an inspired staff, more than 200 volunteers, an Italian café (The Art Caffe), and a venue for multiple events, fundraisers, and concerts, the Center has become a focal point of the “What’scommunity.uniqueabout
the Center is that no matter who walks in the door, there is something for everyone here,” said Mary Moscatelli, CEO. “We want to make it inclusive, so that anyone who walks in can find something that inspires them.” Moscatelli is also the co-chair of an exciting new public arts project, FantaSea Venice. The streets of Venice are adorned with 52 of 5-foottall artfully painted sculptures of mermaids and seahorses. Each of the sculptures has been painted by different artists, sponsored by various businesses and individuals, and will grace the streets through March of 2023. On April 1st of 2023 the sculptures will be auctioned off. To find out more about bidding on your favorite, visit FantaSeaVenice.com. In 2005 the Center hosted a sculpture project called Pigs of Paradise, and in 2012, they showcased dolphins and turtles, called Sea Venice. FantaSea Venice is the third public art project and promises the same allure as its predecessors. Moscatelli urges everyone to come downtown and experience FantaSea Venice. “The sculptures are beautiful. Make it a day trip! See the Sculptures, try our Venice restaurants, explore the shops, and just enjoy downtown Venice.”

As a clinician and founder of a national center for the treatment of chronic pain and mental health disorders, I spend a lot of time with people who have overwhelming life circumstances and emotional burdens. Chances are that you do too, even if it is not apparent to you. That is one of the great tragedies and dangers of having mental health struggles, and that is why awareness campaigns exist, like Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

To find out if ketamine therapy may be right for you, call or go online to learn more about Reichbach Center.
All September long, efforts led by the National Alliance on Mental Illness will spread the word about getting help for suicidal thoughts. In light of a global pandemic and more isolated lifestyle changes across the nation, these thoughts and struggles are more a part of daily living than we can know. Even worse, so many are managing their battles silently. The good news is that interventions exist. You or someone you love can get the support needed to keep going strong. Right now, anyone can dial 988 to call the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for immediate help with difficult or suicidal thoughts. These thoughts are often rooted in day-to-day hardships, including anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress, and other mental health disorders.
Depression and anxiety of all types can be debilitating, and some forms can be more covert than others. If someone is struggling but doesn’t even believe that they should be, it makes getting support difficult. Additionally, there are treatment-resistant forms of mental health disorders as well as treatments that do not adequately relieve symptoms. One newer treatment is offering hope: ketamine.

Thankfully, long-term treatment pathways are available to prevent Depressioncrisis.in
Accompanied by support from mental health providers, ketamine infusion therapy has shown to offer exceptional outcomes to patients coping with trauma, treatmentresistant depression, and more. At Reichbach Center, we are proud to provide hope through a new pathway for our patient-guests to experience relief from a range of mood disorders and transform their lives.
its many forms is a common disorder that can be disabling and even deadly. Many people experience relief with therapy, lifestyle changes, medications, or a combination of all three. Seeking help is often a very difficult choice to make, but it is the right one. Part of spreading awareness for suicide prevention includes efforts to make that choice easier by reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues and recognizing that not all wounds are visible, but they often need help to heal.
Ketamine infusion has been shown to provide sustained improvement in adults experiencing: depression, including unipolar depression (major depression), bipolar depression, and postpartum depression, anxiety disorders, obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal ideation.
The most common cause of a problematic new crown is the bite. If the bite was not adjusted properly, the risks of pain and sensitivity are high. These could be felt on either the crowned tooth or the opposite tooth. An incorrect bite can cause further problems, such as permanent nerve damage or crown fracture. My advice is not to wait, and to go see the dentist. Explain what is wrong with the tooth and have it evaluated. The sooner it is addressed, the better the chances are to avoid the tooth having a permanent and irreversible damage.

If your gums are bleeding around a new crown, perhaps the required measurements between the crown, the gum, and the bone have been violated. To maintain healthy gums, a crown margin must be at a given distance to the bone and should not be embedded into the gums too much. These two issues create problems with cleaning and maintaining bacteria at bay, hence the constant gum irritation. The long-term problem with these violations of health parameters is that the chronic inflammation will erode the bone underneath and can cause a periodontal
Whenproblem.acrown is coming off or braking, perhaps the space between the top and bottom tooth is not ideal, or the bite was not adjusted correctly. All materials have a minimum thickness requirement to minimize fracture and enough space is paramount.
Did you have a new crown or perhaps a veneer made for you and it never felt quite right? Is the tooth or gum sensitive? Is your bite off? Did the crown break or come off? It may be that your tooth, gums, and/or bite were not evaluated correctly, and that the treatment was not the appropriate one.

By Ruth Rojas, DMD, PLLC why IS my new C r Own S t ILL BOther I ng me ?
As a prosthodontic specialist, we look at every possible aspect of teeth, bite, gum health, and bone level that may interfere with the long prognosis of a tooth. Very often I see referred patients because of broken new crowns, recent restored teeth broken at the gum line, or crowns/veneer coming off. The most common cause, other than trauma, is a weak tooth structure under the crown or a bite problem. In order to place a crown or veneer, the tooth has to have enough structure remaining. When a tooth is prepared (grinded) there must be enough width and height in order to preserve the strength of the tooth as well as to hold the crown in place. When a tooth is ground down too thin, the probabilities of fracture at the gum line increases. If the height or width of the tooth is compromised, a buildup may suffice. In more debilitated cases, a root canal and post may also be needed to rebuild a missing part of the tooth before placing a crown. The mistakes start when we try to save a tooth while ignoring the parameters. Sound, parallel walls and height are the keys to a successful crown retention.
Crowns and veneers are a great treatment to replace lost tooth structure, and to protect from further wearing and breaking. They are also used to correct alignment, color, and shape of the teeth, as in smile designs or even to correct the bite.
Their upcoming exhibition at Sarasota Art Museum, Steven and William Ladd: Lead With a Laugh will be presented in two parts. Opening on September 4, visitors will experience a survey of Steven and William Ladd’s career to date and view new works. Steven and William Ladd are brothers who have been making art together for over two decades. They began their artistic careers as accessory designers. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, the brothers have developed an expanded practice consisting of text, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance and design. They transform beads, textiles, and trinkets through cutting, weaving, sewing, and scrolling into highly ornamented, detailed sculptures. While their practice has evolved, Steven and William Ladd remain true to their core values:
• Collaborate. The brothers explore core values through critical community partnerships. Beginning in 2006, they began to integrate fine and conceptual art, design, and craft with their passion to engage with people through hands-on educational collaboration – a program called Scrollathon. During Scrollathon, participants make artwork inspired by a personal story while sharing that story with the group, demonstrating how contemporary art can become a lens for personal storytelling.Participants then make components for a collaborative artwork and are photographed for a permanent record.

RYAN’S RATING:
By Ryan G. Van Cleave THREE NEW YOUNG ADULT NOVELS
I’ve never reviewed a Star Wars book before, but since I just finished watching the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ when this book came across my desk, I’m going for it. While anyone who grew up in the 80s (like me!) would choose to be a Jedi, life isn’t so easy for a teenaged Obi-Wan Kenobi who has recently become an apprentice to Qui-Gon Jinn. The training is all mental—no fun! Then comes a mission for the pair, only his master is MIA. What better way for Obi-Wan to show he’s ready for REAL adventure than going on this one alone to prove himself?
Along the way, he finds a planet (Lenahra) with a bunch of wild Force-using teens. But the Force there is off kilter, or so it seems to the young padawan. What can Obi-Wan do about that all on his own? His teen self-doubt is here, too—if he can’t solve the problem, does that mean he was never meant to be a Jedi?

Kiersten White is a fine, fine writer, and that talent is on display here with solid characterization and rich worldbuilding. Plus, she’s clearly well-versed in the Star Wars universe and has dropped lots of Easter eggs for those who enjoy such treats. Even if you don’t go on to enjoy the well-regarded Claudia Gray book ( Master & Apprentice ) about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, Padawan is a worthy read.

Serena Kayor’s debut novel is an enjoyable YA romcom featuring Beatrice (“Bea”), a likable 16-year-old genius who wants to attend Oxford. Sounds good, right? But her psychotherapist parents are concerned since she pretty much stinks at being a kid (making friends, having fun, etc.). Their solution? Send Bea to a month-long summer camp to prove herself. Only it’s not math camp but the Connecticut Shakespearean Summer Academy. Ugh! Right?

To prepare herself for the four-week dive into theater camp, Bea uses one of her superpowers (a photographic memory) to memorize all of the Bard’s plays, along with how-to books and articles on how to make friends. Will it be enough? Especially when she somehow makes an enemy out of Nik, the 18-year-old handsome and talented mixed-race son of the famous actors who underwrite the camp.

yO ung BLOO d • by Sasha Laurens (Razorbill, July 2022)
Here’s the story. In Youngblood , the vamps in this world drink Hema, a pricey synthetic blood, because most of humanity has been infected with a virus that is fatal to vamps. After living among humans for her entire life, teen vamp Kat Finn finds out that she is able to attend the elite vampires-only boarding school, Harcote. Wahoo! Her roommate is her former best friend (Taylor Sanger) that she hasn’t spoken to in years. Ouch!
Now, Taylor is as wealthy as Kat is poor, but Taylor is the only totally out lesbian at Harcote. Life is hard enough without having to deal with someone with whom she had a massive falling out. And minor spoiler here—this pair’s past involves a first crush.
When there’s a book trend, you have two options— steer clear, or totally lean into it. With Youngblood, Sasha Laurens takes the teen vampire trend and leans fully into it. Let’s call it what it is—the BEST lesbian vampire boarding school story I’ve read this year. Someone else told me that it’s Vampire Diaries meets Vampire Academy plus Gossip Girl. Yep. That’s about right.
114 SARASOTA SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2022 • arts+ cultu R e •
But the two find a way to reconnect and resolve what drove them apart years ago. Soon after, they stumble upon a secret in the school’s archives that involves Hema. The truth of that situation might just rock the entire world of Vampirdom. The heart of the story—this mystery—will keep readers on their Laurenstoes.creates a number of tender scenes that show how the girls are trying to forge a way forward in the world and with each other. Yet the book feels quite fast—almost rushed at times. A lot of the plot hinges upon the miscommunication trope, which feels too Three’s-Company for my taste. And while a number of relevant and appropriate themes emerge in the story (classism, racism, poverty, ableism), most of them don’t develop enough to give the book the depth many readers will desire. Still, the idea of this book is sure to please many, and the worldbuilding and writing are largely well handled.
RYAN’S RATING: RYAN’S RATING:
I resist a few things about this book, such as how the plot becomes a bit predictable, how pretty much everyone in the book seems clear that this introverted neurodivergent girl needs to be “fixed,” and how a few male characters are PG-rated inappropriate. Still, Long Story Short seems ready to be made into a saccharine Netflix original or Disney+ movie aimed at tweens and teens. Don’t let that dissuade you from reading the book, which has a sweet, light, summery feel to every page. If YA rom-coms are your thing and my reservations don’t bother you, this will likely be a fine read for you.
