oney, fame, charm – he’s got it all, and Simon Cowell shows no sign of leaving the music or television industry any time soon. The 51-year-old erupted on to our television screen nearly a decade ago as a talent show judge and has since made his name as being brutally honest – if at times controversial – on shows like Pop Idol, X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. With the launch of America’s version of the X Factor this month (September), Cowell just seems to be unstoppable and infectious in the world of television talent. Who would have thought a multimillionaire like Cowell started off working in the post room? Yes, believe it or not, the pearly white-teethed, bronzed man was once on the bottom of the food chain working in the mail room at EMI Music Publishing. He worked his way up the greasy pole and was eventually promoted to music publishing but then the free-spirited guy broke off in the early 1980s to form E & S Music. He lived the high life in the 1980s, signing numerous acts to a number of record labels, including Fanfare and BMG, acquainting himself with the likes of 5ive and Westlife along the way. He also played a major role in the success of 80s popstar, Sinitta, with whom he is still close friends today. But like any great man he had his falling – and when he fell, it was from a great height. During his early 30s Cowell lost it all and returned home to his parents’ house until he got back up on his feet again. And that he did. By the early ‘noughties’ he had set up Syco Music, which later became part of Columbia Records and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, and took to our screens as one of the most honest – but maybe harshest – critics in the industry. Many a Saturday night, millions of British television viewers would sit at home and prepare themselves for the entertainment that came with a television singing competition.

22  SCENE

In his high-waisted trousers, bland selection of grey, black or white t-shirts and brilliant white teeth Simon Cowell would have people cringing, crying and laughing with his honesty. Sitting alongside other industry front-runners, he would always be the one to take the direct route, give brutal comments but also be the one judge that every contestant wanted to impress. Viewers and wannabe superstars were drawn to him in a love-hate relationship. He was the judge contestants would stand on the stage and wait with baited breath to hear what he had to say, from: “It wasn’t your best performance...” to: “Wow, that blew me away.” Worth millions of pounds, Cowell has signed dozens of artists in his time and in recent years many have included the likes of television talent show contestants Leona Lewis, Gareth Gates and other X Factor winners, and all are released on Syco, propelling them into the industry. He has worked with the likes of Sharon Osborne, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole and continues to nurture some of the greatest stars the industry has seen in the last decade – Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle to name but a few. With his fingers in many different pies there are numerous shows Cowell has been involved in behind the scenes in both the UK and America including ITV’s Grease is the Word and American Inventor. You name it, he’s done it.

Cowell has maintained an aura about him throughout his “public-private” life, keeping the media at a comfortable distance and whether in the UK or America, Cowell always seems to be working. Although an international superstar in his own right, his priorities always lie with his work and the industry. But underneath that hard exterior the public have often seen a softer side to Cowell. A number of times he’s been reduced to tears by moving music and a famous interview with Piers Morgan saw him talk frankly and honestly about his life growing up, the death of his father and his love for his beautiful fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy. We know very little about the love life of Cowell – other than he has thousands of female followers – and it appears he is determined to keep it that way. Aside from his red-carpet lifestyle, Cowell is often seen at some of the year’s most star-studded charity events and has been closely associated with The Association of Children’s Hospices and animal rights charity, PETA. So with houses around the world, a beautiful girl on his arm and a string of television shows under his belt, what does this man not have? He may have left an absent seat on the new series of the UK X Factor but Cowell will be hitting America’s screens next month for the US version of the show in a deal with broadcaster Fox that I am sure will have the nation screaming for more.

In the Life of...

Bruno Milin - director of marketing and events at City Pavilion

Monday

Every day is a busy day with a full agenda – especially since my little girl Amélie was born four weeks ago. Life has changed for my fiancée, Leigh, and I but she’s beautiful and we both love every minute of it. This morning I’m meeting with several suppliers for our newest project here at the City Pavilion; an Italian Pizza & Pasta restaurant to open in November. It’s an exciting project with live cooking of pizza and pasta and we’re even splitting up the kitchen for vegetarian and meat-eaters which has worked great in our Indian restaurant. In the afternoon I meet with a boxing promoter to organise our next event in the Millennium Suite in October and then I’m off to a meeting at RS Lounge to discuss the weekend and a few new nights in the pipelines. I get to spend the evening with my beautiful girls after cooking a nice diner.

THE ESSENCE OF SCOTCH IN A SCENT After 27 years of building and expanding their brand, the creative team at Fashion House Scotch & Soda have launched their first male fragrance entitled Barfly. Much like Scotch & Soda’s clothes, Barfly has its own character and is full of details. As the scent develops from its fresh citrus top notes to the middle notes of lavender and jasmine mixed with sandal and cedar wood, it eventually settles down to reveal its warm base notes of musk and Madagascar vanilla. Typical of Scotch & Soda’s design aesthetics, this product stands out by its individuality, not only by its original and surprising scent but also by its name and product design. With its no nonsense bottle carefully selected through vintage archives and crafted top with the embossed fly logo, Barfly is a truly special edition to the Scotch & Soda brand. Diary of a wannabe healer I arrived in Athens excited and ready for my Thai massage course and retreat at Sunshine House, run by my friend Takis. I had a lovely little wooden hut to sleep in with its own shower (No matter how spiritual I get I will ALWAYS need a decent shower!) And I got to share it with two other English ladies, one from Essex! We are awoken every morning by a gong, which the lovely Till holds up to our window to chime. Vipassana Mediation is followed by 1.5 hours of yoga or chi gong on the local beach looking out onto the sea - too beautiful for words. It was daunting initially and on the first day I slept on every break. With every day that passed the course became more and more enjoyable and Sunday was a breeze, with my body not wanting to wiggle and move during mediation and feeling more focused during yoga. Then it was learning, learning and more learning

in the open air underneath two huge trees to keep us cool. We kept our energy up with fresh watermelon and peaches for breakfast and pulses and vegetables for lunch grown on the grounds by Daphne, the AMAZING chef! I purposefully forgot all that I had learned on Thai massage previously in Thailand as I wanted a new perspective here in Athens. I was keen to learn how to feel more about what the client was going through and on our final day of assessment it seemed to pay off. Whilst everyone else was cramming from their book, I took off to the coffee shop and sat in peace before giving my massage. The client loved it, Takis gave me a big kiss and a wink to say he really felt my connection with the client and that it looked just as it should: a beautiful flowing dance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it too. I’m excited to be home, ready to share my Thai massage learnings and help my clients new and old to chill out, relax and let a little bit of Greek sunshine into their lives through the art of massage. Beauty S py Mustard Hairdressing

“Botox for hair” sounded like just what my less-than thick mane of long brown hair was in need of, so off I went to Mustard Hairdressing in Chingford to find exactly what their Botox Blow Dry treatment was all about. L’Oreal Professional has introduced a new in-salon treatment called Fiberceutic, which promises softer and fuller hair for up to 10 washes. It is a two-step fibre-filling treatment designed to help reinforce and plump up the hair. In the same way that Botox and other cosmetic procedures smooth away wrinkles; this formula apparently plugs holes and smooths away tears in damaged locks. Feeling slightly sceptical, Mustard’s co-owner Ben welcomed me in to the stylish salon and talked me through the treatment and its benefits. After my hair was washed the serum was applied (with a syringe no less!) to deposit to areas where the hair is fragile to seal any gaps and repairs areas in the first stages of breakage. The second part of the treatment, the sealer, was applied following the serum. This keeps the hair follicle smooth, helps the serum to be more effective and allows

the smoothness to last longer. The sealer also helps restore shine and softness to the hair. After the treatment my hair was blow-dried to perfection by Ben to be left looking noticeably shinier and thicker. Does it work? As an overall deeply revitalizing treatment, The Botox Blowdry is best for those with dry or damaged hair. I did think it was effective as my hair felt healthier and looked thicker for some time after the treatment. Definitely surgery for the hair! Botox Blow Dry costs £35. Step up to the DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THE GYM? Try a 25 minute Power Plate class at Repose. It is equivalent to working out at the gym for an hour and a half. The revolutionary Power Plate is helping all physical abilities, ages and weight ranges to dramatically improve fitness, health, and wellbeing .

wners, Glenys and Tracy Reynolds and Gemma Clark, recently opened the doors of their new state-of-theart studio in Buckhurst Hill, an area that until now was sadly lacking for dedicated Power Plate Studios. Essex residents can now work out in style on the four Power Plate® pro6 machines at Repose Studios. There are also plans to introduce the new powerBIKE into the mix in the future. The three ladies have invested time, money and most of all, their hearts, into establishing this oasis of calm situated at the top of Buckhurst Hill’s, Queens Road, and the results are stunning. Designed to a very high spec, the open-plan studio is stylish and bright and has a friendly, laid back environment. To create the ultimate haven, they will be converting the outdoor area into a tranquil garden where clients can relax before and after classes.

“At Repose, our main priority for our clients is to make sure they feel comfortable and enjoy exercising. Our clients are only ever worked at a comfortable level and are encouraged to push themselves a little more each session” says Glenys. She adds “For now we offer Power Plate classes, comfort and a space for our clients to unwind and feel relaxed. We want people’s senses to be ignited with beautiful sounds, fragrances and surroundings so that the physical exercise won’t seem so daunting.” The medically certified Power Plate uses up to 98% muscle fibre, compared to 20% on traditional gym equipment. This accelerated training technique is a complete, full body workout with no impact to your joints, in just 25 minutes. Repose Studio’s current timetable includes introductory classes, post natal, circuit, men only and weight reduction sessions. All classes last just 25 minutes with a maximum of four people per class. They also offer weight loss workshops, designed to help people improve their mental relationship with food. Classes are £20 for single sessions, with reductions during off peak hours, and for those buying packages of sessions. FREE trial session for all new clients. Beautiful Bathrooms From Bathworks Bathworks Ltd, suppliers of bathroom and shower equipment and tiles, was formed in 2003 by Richard Banks and Lloyd Moulder.

44  SCENE

B

oth Richard and Lloyd had been working for wellknown manufacturers before deciding to venture out on their own. They originally chose Milton Keynes as a base as they both felt that there was a need for a good quality bathroom retailer in the area. The premises that they occupy in Bradwell Abbey are 2,500 sq ft with over 20 fully tiled display settings. In February 2011, Bathworks opened their second showroom on the high road in Woodford Green, Essex. These premises have a number of fully tiled bathroom displays, showcasing some of the latest products from selected European manufacturers. As Lloyd & Richard have previously worked as Sales Managers for major bathroom brands, both know that good service is just as important as being able to offer a wide range of quality products. They provide a full service from design concept to installation followed by a fantastic after sales service. Home surveys are

offered to establish what products are right for you and your room along with a no-obligation quote. Specialising in a vast range of bathroom and shower equipment, Bathworks are one of the South East’s leading bathroom showrooms. They are able to offer exclusive products within the area, covering Woodford, Wanstead, Buckhurst Hill, Loughton, Chingford and Chigwell. They will also organise the trades required to complete the work, including plumbing, tiling, plastering & decorating. At Bathworks, you will find everything you need to make your own bathroom dreams come true. From baths and showers in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes, to hi-tech lighting and mirrors, they can help you create the perfect bathroom for you. So whether you are simply looking for a bathroom item, or an entirely new look, be it a wet room, loft en suite or state-ofthe-art steam room, you will find it all

under one roof. Bathworks strive to bring you the best when it comes to supplying the bathroom suite of your choice. Only supplying the highest quality, best brands at realistic prices and working closely with their suppliers, the staff are always on hand to give professional, friendly advice. Lloyd says: “With over 60 years combined within the bathroom industry, our staff knowledge and experience is vast. Our aim is to always give you the right information and sell you the right product, all at the best price and to suit all budgets.”

Home is where The art is A striking restoration of the former Flowers East gallery in Hackney has successfully combined modern works of art with luxury living spaces, and it is attracting high profile creative professionals from around the world.

Arthaus Union Developments’ new scheme on the Richmond Road is soon to be the home of New Zealander Camille Sanson, a high-end fashion photographer and her husband Sohail, a marketing professional. The couple were seduced by the developments’ modern art gallery, loft-style architecture and intriguing history, so they decided to buy a two-bedroom penthouse apartment. Arthaus, built within the framework of the former Flowers East Gallery which nurtured the British artists of the 90s, comprises 97 apartments. The development also includes a 2,000foot modern art gallery, GALERIE8, in its central atrium, to which residents have access. Camille, 32, comments: “I used to drive past the building when it was empty and wish I lived there. When I saw they had started to restore it, I enquired, and fell in love with the concept. The architecture is unique and the location is fantastically central.” Camille and Sohail have bought a penthouse with access to the roof garden and are excited about living in an art gallery. “I love the idea of

being surrounded by art, and having everything I need in one place. The building even has studio space so I could work here too. Because the development is in an old art gallery it has the perfect mix of character and modern living. The building reminds me of a New York warehouse.”

Originally from New Zealand, Camille is now a fully fledged Hackney-phile. “I love the markets, the pubs and the cafes here. Hackney has everything I need and more. There is always something new popping up, from yoga classes to gluten free bakeries. Hackney is my perfect London village.” Arthaus combines art with everyday living. Flooded with natural light, the permanent gallery will provide a space for established and up and coming artists to display their work. A restaurant and coffee shop are part of the gallery space providing a stylish and convenient area for residents and visitors to enjoy the atmosphere. Along with a permanent curator, GALERIE8 has a webzine which will allow residents to take part in the curation of the gallery in which they live. SCENE  53

A groundbreaking new show home at Arthaus features over £100,000 worth of original modern art by thirteen celebrated artists, including Andy Warhol. The show home merges a functional and stylish living space with an artistic gallery, and is the first of its kind. Using painting, photography, sculpture, installations and videos, the show house art exhibition, named Intimate Spaces, infuses the unoccupied show home with a sense of sentimental remembrance. The work, which alludes to both intimacy and domesticity, is displayed throughout the five bedroom house. Andy Warhol’s Polaroids of famous artists take larger than life personalities and intimately present them with all their vulnerability laid bare. Other artists featured in the show home include the award winning Roland Hicks, who monumentalises ordinary household items and Jemma Appleby, whose admired charcoal drawings combine architectural elements with landscape forms. David Pollock, Director of Union Developments, comments: “Arthaus is a revolutionary development and we wanted to create a show home which reflected that. 54  SCENE

Visitors will be able to view £100,000 worth of thought provoking artwork set against a domestic backdrop while viewing the home, which is something that has never been done before.” Each Arthaus property is built to a high specification, including under floor heating throughout, Starck design bathrooms, and porcelain tiles. The Pronom by Poggenpohl kitchens include granite worktops and contemporary appliances and there is also an exclusive 24-hour concierge service. Residents will also have access to a large communal roof terrace and entertainment room. The superbly designed apartments, town houses and working studios have been built within the framework of the famous Flowers East gallery. The industrial chic red brick building is in the heart of cultural Hackney, near the popular London Fields and Broadway Market. Prices start from £300,000 for one bedroom apartments, £390,000 for two bedroom apartments and £480,000 for three bedroom apartments. La Torre Golf Resort is arguably the most complete resort in Southern Spain. Carved into the stunning Murcia region, Scene Magazine spent the weekend discovering the delights of one of Polaris World’s most beautiful attractions.

Words by Luke Harman

F

orget anything that is etched into the collective consciousness about Spanish developers. Forget about low quality construction, high density, unfinished developments and, most of all, the dreaded land grab. Instead, understand Polaris World, perhaps the most remarkable development company in the world. Part of Polaris World’s portfolio of resorts that stretch across Southeastern Spain, the resort at La Torre is dominated by an impressive 18-hole Nicklaus Design golf course.

With a dream to create the most spectacular collection of golf courses possible, it was always clear that the handprints of Nicklaus Design, and, in particular, Jack Nicklaus himself, would be an integral part of the Polaris experience. “Of course, the name Nicklaus has long been associated with greatness on the golf course,” explains Polaris World CEO, José Luis Hernandez. “The 20 major championships, the electrifying finishes and the sheer will to win.” Jack’s achievements are legendary.

“Today, Nicklaus also stands for outstanding course design, a result of more than three decades as a renowned golf course designer. We believe that Nicklaus Design has elevated the standards of golf course design worldwide, which is why we were determined to secure the company as our partner.” Featuring over five hectares of elaborately sculpted bunkers, long grasses which create a windswept look and three large lakes, the La Torre golf course’s lush landscaping complements both the golf experience

SCENE  57

as well as the extended views from the surrounding development. The shorter length of the course makes it more playable for the average to higher-handicap players who will appreciate the four sets of tees and wide fairways. Similarly, La Torre Golf Resort incorporates a great deal of strategy making it an interesting challenge to the better players when played from the back tees. Complete with a full-feature practice facility, La Torre Golf Resort is sure to be a pleasant stop for golfers along the Nicklaus Golf Trail. For visitors less interested in golf, La Torre still has plenty to offer. Set around a wonderful lake, the town centre has a stunning variety of attractions: from an ice cream terrace to a speciality wine retailer, from a 2,000 sq metre supermarket to a juice and smoothie bar and from a beauty salon to a gymnasium – there is plenty to keep guests busy. For entertainment, residents can choose from a spike bar, an Irish Tavern, the residents’ clubhouse and 58  SCENE

sophisticated restaurants offering everything from up-market Italian to speciality pizzas. Bamboo is a fabulous cocktail bar overlooking the water and there is also a specialist rice restaurant called Limonero. Central to the resort is the InterContinental Hotel which boasts a covered pool and 14 treatment and relaxation rooms as part of its spa and is a further facility to explore for guests and visitors. Having opened in late 2008 it is the finest hotel in the region. Conscious of the demands of modern developments, such as the one at La Torre, Polaris is also working to secure water stocks for the area - as well as researching grasses for the golf courses and sport facilities, a feature of the developments that require less water than normal. On behalf of SCENE Magazine, our thanks are extended to Luke who moved out to Spain with his family from the UK to start a new life in 2006. He ended up as Sales Manager for both Golf and InterContinental Hotel, where he has been for the last 4 years, and his wonderful efforts helped make our stay a truly memorable experience.

Alec’s Restaurant Bar & Grill

Dating back to 1701, The Tower Arms, a stunning country pub and restaurant and hotel in Essex’s South Weald is nonetheless a very modern place to dine indeed. Sympathetically refurbished to make the most of eye catching original features such as brick built fireplaces and beams, The Tower Arms is all at once cosy and embracing, chic and contemporary with open log fires burning in the winter and a sunny garden with pretty planting and decked area - not to mention two petanque pits - open to visitors in the summer. The food is modern European with a focus on creativity and flavour

combinations, going well above and beyond pub fayre. Sunday lunches are a little more traditional with typical roasts on the menu while the option to pick several dishes as either starter or main course provides a flexibility rarely seen in other restaurants. The Tower Arms’ wine list is notable for its variety, offering both well known wines by the glass and a connoisseurs selection of rarer bottled vintages. Alec’s Restaurant Bar & Grill is the latest project by Alec Smith, formerly of Smiths Brasserie and the Chariot Restaurant Group. Alec has lovingly restored the former Green Man Public House at Navestock Side, a prominent landmark within the local community, with flair and passion. The interior features spiral staircases, spacious dining rooms and stunning views from every aspect. Whether it be enjoying the surrounding countryside or watching the cricketers on the green opposite, at only 3 miles from Brentwood and 10 miles from Chigwell, its location is superb. Alec’s Restaurant Bar and

Grill sets out to provide simple, quality food cooked the way you wish. Head chef Stephen Li, with whom Alec has collaborated before on previous ventures, brings his knowledge and expertise from the most superb kitchen area. Classic fried cod in beer batter and chips sits happily with steamed sea bass with an oriental twist. Open Tuesday - Saturday 6pm - 12 Midnight, Sunday - 12.30pm - 6.30pm and now open for lunch from Thursday-Saturday 12.30pm – 4.30pm. WOODFORD’S HOTTEST NEW TICKET-Temple More often than not, I order the same tried and tested meal – a chicken or prawn Puree starter followed by either a chicken Tikka Jalfrezi or a Chicken Madras, generally with a side order of Bombay Alloo and a Peshwari Nan Bread. Words by Rebecca Cheung

Indian food is one of my favourite cuisines, being the absolute chilli fiend that I am it caters to all my spice cravings beautifully. So when I was invited along with my friend Jade to try out Woodford’s latest culinary addition Temple, I decided I was going to sway from tradition and try all new dishes. In my expansive experience of local Indian restaurants, I have found that generally my initial associations are tacky décor, old and tatty carpet and a general air of disrepair. None of this ever stops me from eating in these establishments; however, I never leave feeling I’ve had what I term as a ‘dining experience’. This couldn’t be further from accurate of the Temple restaurant. I met Jade at Woodford station and we walked through the subway to be greeted with a slick looking restaurant front complete with wooden decking and outdoor seating – something that wouldn’t be out of place on a summer holiday looking out onto an exclusive beach. Once inside the interior matched up to the outside and the creams, browns and beiges made for a very modern almost designer feel – I was impressed, if the food could match up to the décor we were in for a treat. 62  SCENE

While we studied the menu over a Cobra we were brought out a rather large basket of poppadoms with the obligatory raita, mango chutney, onion salad and my favourite – lime pickle. The lime pickle was actually exceptional with an incredibly fiery kick and it also had some peas in – very tasty. With some helpful advice from the very friendly and informative owner, Badrul Haque, we decided to share two starters between us and opted for the Paneer Shashlick and Adha Jhinga. The Paneer Shashlick was a spiced homemade rennet-free cheese cooked in a tandoor (a cylindrical clay oven) – and in a word it was amazing. Perfectly spiced so we had a very flavoursome cheese, almost halloumi-like but with incredible flavour explosions each time we took a bite – this dish didn’t last long. The Adha Jhinga was a dish of king prawns also cooked in a tandoor. These were crispy and delicious with ginger, garlic, lemon and fenugreek giving them a fantastic taste. For our main course I wanted something hot and explained to the owner my predicament of always ordering the same dishes. He made a suggestion of the Jhal – a Banglasdeshi curry with chicken. It delivered on flavour and heat wonderfully – it had a little more sauce to it than a drier Jalfrezi and was similar with the peppers and SCENE  63

onions but not being coconut or cream based it felt very healthy in its heat. I’d definitely go for this again as it was an alternative spicy dish without the complete fire and potency of a Vindaloo or Phall. Jade went for another Bangladeshi speciality – the Adha Diya Lamb Tikka and she loved her choice too. Hers was a creamy coconut base with the taste of mango and sultanas thrown in – giving it an almost Caribbean flavour – and the lamb was tender to the point of meltin-the-mouth – perfect. This had a more subtle spice to it so would be well suited to the less adventurous heat-hunters. To go alongside our main courses we shared coriander rice which was great, really refreshing alongside all the heat – a Sag Alloo – spiced potatoes and spinach and another new dish to the pair of us – Mishti Lao Bhaji. This last dish was a favourite for me and one I’ve never seen on any other menu which begs the question WHY. It was a wonderful dish of sweet pumpkin spiced with strong fenugreek and was so well cooked that it crumbled in the mouth and filled it with the most sensational flavours. It had a smokiness combined with sweet that just complimented the heat of the Jhal and the Adha Diya. We were completely, and happily full after all of this to the point of not managing another bite – however never one to turn down a liquor coffee – we both had a lovely Bailey’s Latte to finish our meal, and it really was a good ending. Temple is exactly the kind of Indian/ Bangladeshi restaurant that I’d like to visit again – it delivers in all the key areas, flavours are good, service was prompt, friendly and informed and last but not least the venue itself was comfortable, chic and exactly in keeping with this part of Essex. There was a good vibe in Temple with a large crowd for an early Thursday evening – they obviously know about the latest hotspot and I’ll certainly be returning again soon. A wonderful meal with wonderful company – what’s not to love. The new Porsche Cayman S Black Edition combines performance and style, with a 3.4-litre flat-six engine tuned to deliver 330 hp, distinctive 19” alloy wheels finished in black and a luxurious interior. Production is limited to 500 examples worldwide, and UK sales begin in September.

The extra power is produced at 7,400 rpm (an additional 200 rpm vs the standard car), while the maximum torque remains unchanged at 370Nm at 4,750 rpm. This extra horsepower feeds directly through into the performance of the all-black midengined two--seater. Acceleration from 0-62 mph is improved by a tenth of a second to 5.1 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission, and to 5.0 seconds with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) respectively. With the Launch Control activated on the PDK Sport Chrono package option, acceleration improves further to 4.8 seconds. The top speed of the Cayman S Black Edition is just over one mph faster than that of the Cayman S – 173 mph with the manual transmission and 172 mph with PDK. In line with the Porsche Intelligent Performance principles, fuel consumption of the Cayman S Black Edition remains identical to that of the standard car, despite the increase in horsepower. The Cayman S Black Edition with manual transmission returns 29.7mpg Combined, and 30.1mpg Combined with PDK. Likewise, CO2 remains 223g/km for the manual and 221g/km for the PDK. Helping the dynamic performance of the Cayman S Black Edition further still are the lightweight Boxster Spyder wheels finished in black which, with SCENE  71

a diameter of 19 inches, are one inch bigger than the standard Cayman S wheels and also half an inch wider than the optional 19 inch wheels offered on the Cayman S. The tyre sizes fitted are 235/35 ZR 19s on the front axle and 265/35 ZR 19s on the rear axle. The Cayman S Black Edition features as standard Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights, together with automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor. 72  SCENE

The front seats are trimmed in black partial leather with a Porsche crest on the headrests, as well as a Sport Design steering wheel. Climate control and cruise control add to the overall comfort. A further highlight of the Black Edition interior is the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) incorporating satellite navigation. This is combined with the universal audio interface that allows MP3 player connectivity and also Bluetooth mobile phone compatibility. The colour scheme of the Cayman S Black Edition is consistent throughout:

the dashboard trim is black as are the gear lever/selector trim and the dials in the instrument cluster. The door entry guards feature “Black Edition” lettering and are made of stainless steel; the glove compartment lid bears a badge highlighting the limited edition status. The Cayman S Black Edition costs from £50,420 and is on sale in the UK from September 2011. Customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

My

Avril Mills

Scene Words by Frankie Cooper

Inspirational Avril Mills, founder of Essex charity Dream Factory, tells My Scene about making wishes come true, her 24/7 charity life and how she’s really just one mum trying to make a difference. Tell us about your background. I used to work at Haven House; I was part of the team that opened and got it up and running. We worked really hard fundraising to get the cash to open the facility. I was then the event manager for six years until I left three and a half years ago to set up Dream Factory. Why did you want to set up Dream Factory? I just wanted to create my own dream charity. I lost my son Oliver when he was nine; he had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. He was 3 when he first got it and he had it three times in six years – it was a really tough time. When he was ill I helped other children and worked to make their dreams come true. I helped a little boy meet some Arsenal players and he said when he grew up, he wanted to grant dreams. It inspired me. He didn’t grow up. I had the chance to make his dreams come true. It must have been hard to get it started? It wasn’t easy but South Eastern Electrics have given us a car, helped with funding and provided office space for the charity. I’m a single parent with two children and it’s a lot of hard work but with a strong team of volunteers it’s working. All the dream-makers are volunteers and we only have one full-time and one part-time paid member of staff and our overheads are

74  SCENE

really low so it means we pump in as much money as possible to making dreams a reality. So what have you accomplished? In just three years we’ve made 120 dreams come true with about nine or 10 dreammakers. At the moment we’ve got about 25 dreams on the go – it’s non-stop. What sort of dreams do you create? They can really vary. We’ve got children going to Disney Land to meet Mickey and Minnie Mouse, one lad we recently flew to Jamaica so he could see his native country. Another family are going on holiday to

So what do your family think about what you do? I’ve got my daughter Emma who is 23 and my son Joshua who is 14, and I think they both think I’m barking mad! Both of my children are very sympathetic as they know how hard it’s been for me. I think they think I’m a bit crazy, but I cope by helping others and I think they get it. So where do you live? I live in Epping and have done all my life.

Center Parcs – it’s about what each child or family needs. It’s also really important to not leave the siblings out as well. We also help with smaller things like providing laptops, iPads, music systems. You’ve obviously got a strong connection with a number of the families... What people don’t realise is that when a child gets cancer or a serious illness or disability it can affect a family financially. I know, I understand, I’ve been there. It costs money to drive backwards and forwards to the hospital every day, to buy food etc. It’s not easy.

And what about your spare time? I don’t have any! The charity is my life 24/7- when you run a busy charity like the money has to be raised and has to come from somewhere so I’m always doing one thing or another. But I do enjoy going out with the girls and going to Chigwell or Loughton. My parents have also got a place in Marbella, Spain, so I’ll go out there when I can. And I’m also a parent governor at St John’s School, in Epping.
