THE BAKERY

It’s an exciting time at The Bakery in Tatsfield, as big plans have been set in motion to redevelop the kitchens, dining facilities, and introduce five boutique style en-suite rooms so people can stay. Phase one - to extend and completely refit the kitchens - of what will be a four-phase project ,should already be finished by the time you read this. After this, the en-suite rooms will be put in, and hopefully these will be ready prior to the Olympics, especially as there might be extra demand for rooms

due to the anticipated number of extra flights Biggin Hill Airport will be receiving during this period. It’s hoped that the bedrooms will also attract custom to the village from nearby businesses, travelling business people, tourists and not to mention guests dining at the restaurant who may with to stay over after dinner, a wedding or birthday celebration. BANG & OLUFSEN OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS PUTS CUSTOMERS IN THE DRIVING SEAT

B

ang & Olufsen of Tunbridge Wells motored ahead when it came to hosting a unique event that would capture the imagination of its VIP customers. The Mount Pleasant Road retailer invited customers to experience an unrivalled fusion of audio-visual and automotive excellence with its participation in the Aston Martin ‘Speed of Sound’ Tour. Through the Tour, which was exclusive to only six nationwide Bang & Olufsen retailers, Bang & Olufsen of Tunbridge Wells arranged for its customers to drive the latest Aston Martin models and receive professional tuition from the manufacturer’s Performance Driving Instructors.

Customers who attended the unprecedented event, which was based at the Bang & Olufsen of Tunbridge Wells showroom, were treated to a 40-minute drive of the new DBS Carbon or V8 Vantage. Prior to getting behind the wheel of the phenomenal Aston Martins, customers were given a demonstration of each car’s impressive, factory-fitted Bang & Olufsen audio installation and were

able to witness how the loudspeakers rise out of the dashboard the second the key is placed in the ignition.

When customers weren’t experiencing what are two of the world’s most exciting sports cars, they were able to sample another top performer at Bang & Olufsen of Tunbridge Wells – the newly-launched BeoVision 12. With its phenomenal 65”, 3D screen, the latest Bang & Olufsen digital television ensured that it wasn’t just the striking Aston Martins that looked amazing. Andy Irvine, Sales Executive at Bang & Olufsen of Tunbridge Wells, was delighted that the retailer had helped customers achieve their driving ambitions. “Response to the event was excellent and it was good to see our customers getting a lot from the experience, enjoying the chance to drive such aspirational cars and also being able to enhance their own road skills through tips from professional drivers,” said Andy. “There was much interest in our latest products too, all our customers being

impressed with how BeoVision 12 sets a new high when it comes to creating the ultimate home cinema experience.” Andy continued: “It was one of our best and most memorable events and it’s something we’d certainly like to host again in the future. In fact, we could have filled the places we had available many times over.” 66 Mount Pleasant Road, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 1RH. 01892 527 525 SCENE 17

You’re Words by Lauren John

Lord Sugar was brought up in a council house on an estate in Hackney, South London, and showed entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. While many schoolchildren were in bed, a young Lord Sugar would be up at 6am boiling beetroot for a greengrocer.

18  SCENE

It seems like only yesterday that these immortal words last ricocheted off the walls of the boardroom but, now that last year’s candidates’ performances have been consigned to the Youtube bloopers vault, it’s time to welcome the class of 2012 and the 8th series of The Apprentice. Once again, Lord Sugar has invited a shortlist of 16 of the UK’s most ambitious business brains along with him on a 12 week journey full of tears, tantrums, egos, mishaps and mayhem, before finally, one victor will walk away with the spoils. Once again, the winner of this year’s Apprentice will become Lord Sugar’a business partner, walking away with a £250,000 investment to give their new venture the best start in life. Any viewers of previous series will know, this isn’t a task Lord Sugar takes lightly, and in series 8 he will no doubt once again testing the candidates creative, sales, marketing, leadership, and organisational skills to the absolute limit. With the eagle eyes of Nick and Karren following their every move, the class of 2012 will no doubt be eager to prove their commercial insight and business sense, and hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls that have sealed the fate of previous contestants. One thing Lord Sugar is never very impressed by is the candidates claiming any affinity or similarity to himself. One of his classic one liners in series 3, ‘Don’t start telling me that you’re just like me, because no one’s like me, I’m unique’, may ring true, though you couldn’t do worse than learn a few lessons from Lord Sugar’s business experience. The original ‘Del Boy’, Lord Sugar was brought up in a council house on an estate in Hackney, South London, and showed entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. While many schoolchildren were in bed, a young Lord Sugar would be up at 6am boiling beetroot for a greengrocer, and by the age of 16 was earning more than his father, from weekend and evening work alone. Business acumen, and ingenuity played an important part in his early years; he even built his own bicycle from an old frame when his family couldn’t afford to buy him one. After SCENE 19

selling car aerials and cigarettes from his equivalent of Del Boy and Rodney’s Robin Reliant, he started his first electronics company aged just 21. Although Lord Sugar has never been immune to the perils of business, he made his first million with one of his most well-known success stories, the Amstrad computer. Amstrad also had a lucrative line in set top boxes, a business which is now owned by BSkyB. Today, Lord Sugar, his wife, and his collection of classic cars, have found a home in Chigwell, Essex, from where he can not only enjoy his passion for cars, but also puts to good use his 30 year’s experience as a qualified pilot as he owns a Cirrus SR20 four seat aircraft. Lord Sugar certainly has a few ‘boys toys’, but they are just rewards for a businessman, who, when not playing the role of ‘belligerent boss’ in The Apprentice, also has his current business portfolio to oversee. He owns and/ or is chairman of Amsair, a business and executive jet company; Viglen, an IT solutions business; Amscreen, a digital signage advertising business - and Amsprop. Amsprop is Sir Alan Sugar’s property investment firm, and forms the core of his business activities. Now of, course, he is well known as a TV personality; perhaps, some might say, as famous for his business record, as his acerbic wit and archive of one-liners. As the BBC wrote when they profiled him on their website in 2007, “Sir Alan is living, growling proof that you can reach the top and yet retain a distinct cockney flavour”. With such a solid business record, Lord Sugar’s success is something this year’s potential Apprentices hope to emulate one day, although to a certain extent they might want to avoid adding too much ‘cockney flavour’. Hopefully, they’ve also had a look at some of the ‘best bits’ from past series of the hit BBC show. While the ever

so catchy ‘Dance In Your Pants’ ad jingle, and the equally questionable catchphrase ‘Hasta La Vista Gravy’ might have provided some TV Gold at the time, the novelty might wear off if any of the candidates decide to attempt something similar this time round. The series kicked off on March 21st, and prior to this we were given an opportunity to ‘meet’ this year’s candidates and measure up their business potential. The 16 men and women taking part this year include an architect, beauty salon owner, market trader, a recruitment team leader, a national sales manager, and a technology entrepreneur. There’s also a co-founder of a food manufacturers and a restaurateur in the line-up. They won’t have any trouble identifying a cloche in a buying task then, except oh wait, that was part of last year’s buying tasks. Whatever tasks await in this year’s gruelling 12 week process, one Apprentice we’ll definitely be looking out for is local candidate, Michael Copp. 31 year old Michael is a Londoner, whose ‘drive and tough background’ has led him to become the Managing Director of Dream Bedrooms and Kitchens in Woodford Green. Unlike some of the other contestants, Michael can’t include moonlighting as a wrestler, or ice skating alongside Olympic, champions Torvil and Dean, in his personal profile, but it’s character and business skills that matter in this process. Saying that, it’s interesting to note the quote that candidate Azhar Siddique has chosen for his personal profile. He states that “It’s not about who shouts the loudest, it’s who has the ability to control the conversation.” Whether this shrewd insight will apply to Michael or any of the applicants, only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure, when it comes to whittling down the candidates and picking an overall winner, Lord Sugar will be the only one in the boardroom controlling the conversation.

Can you remember the first time you went to see, Dr Abbas ? I remember the first time I went to see Dr Abbas, I was really, really little and I wasn’t nervous as I didn’t know what the dentist was and I haven’t ever been nervous since as he was so good. How important do you think it is to have a perfect smile in showbiz? I just think it’s important to smile! I don’t think it matters how perfect your smile is, as long as you smile all the time. Were you ever scared of going to see Dr Abbas? If so, how did he handle the situation? I was never ever scared of seeing Dr Abbas. He is the best dentist there is and he has always made me feel comfortable. If you hated going to the dentist, what excuse would you try to use to get out of going? I’ve never hated going to the dentist. Do you think that it matters what kind of products you use or do you think they all just do the same thing? I definitely think it matters and I think that Dr Abbas has always advised me on the best products to use - and I’ve always had really healthy teeth. Since becoming, famous have you been pressured into going for the bleached white Simon Cowell look or are you happy staying natural? I love white teeth, so I do use whitening toothpaste, and I have had my teeth whitened a couple of times but nothing too drastic.

has the signature smile!

Americans stereotypically think that Brits have ‘bad teeth’. Does having perfectly straight and white teeth really matter? I don’t think it matters but I do think it looks really, really nice but, as I said before, as long as you are happy, that’s all that really matters. Why have you kept going back to Dr Abbas at Signature Smile? Dr Abbas has been my dentist since I was three years old and I trust him, he always makes me feel comfortable and I’ve never had any problems with my teeth. Do you think you’ll keep going back? Yes, I will always go back to Dr Abbas, twice a year, every year, and so will my children. 0208 505 4466 7a Johnston Road, Woodford Green, Essex, IG8 0XA www.woodfordsmile.com

Be Captivated

“When the original Captiva Came to market baCk at the end of 2006 it marked a turning point for the brand, a Clear signal of Chevrolet’s intentions of beComing a mainstream player in the highly Competitive european market.”

L

ouis Chevrolet would be proud of the latest SUV entry, the New Captiva. Chevrolet’s full blooded compact SUV has been given a major makeover for 2011, including a fresh exterior design to give it an even more confident and dynamic presence; an all-new range of the latest powerful and fuel efficient engines; chassis modifications to improve ride and handling and an upgraded interior. Chevrolet was the creator of the first sports utility vehicle back in the 1930’s with the iconic Suburban, a nameplate that has spanned an incredible seven decades and is still going strong in the U.S. today. The appeal of a vehicle like the Captiva is that it will fulfil its duties on the shopping run one day, it will then take half the football team to the match the next day, followed by some off-roading or a trip onto the beach at the weekend. It is that kind of modern versatility and can-do attitude that encapsulates the spirit of a car like the Captiva, and why it is expected to appeal

not only to family motorists but to anyone seeking an alternative to the conventional sedan or hatchback, a vehicle which says something about their lifestyle.Wayne Brannon, Chevrolet Europe’s president and managing director, believes now is an excellent opportunity for the new Captiva to make further inroads into market share. “The new model is very much a car of the times, designed for families and their everyday requirements yes, but also for those looking to go out and have some adventures. That’s what an SUV like the Captiva is all about, it makes a statement and for many it’s an extension of their lifestyle. The new Captiva also personifies what the Chevrolet brand is all about, in that it transcends social status or profession, and will, we think, appeal to people from all walks of life.” Strong exterior design The Captiva has won many friends for its exterior design and with the new model it just got even better. A number of features are immediately noticeable when

viewing the new Captiva from the front: the re-shaped and sharply sculptured bonnet, a new larger grille with the Chevrolet signatories, such as the dual opening and the ‘bow-tie’ badge which sits proudly in the middle, and the new cylindrical prism-style headlamps and integrated turn signals on the exterior rear-view mirrors; all up-market features which belie the Captiva’s entry price point. Moving round to the front fenders, the side air-vents now take on a more angular shape to emphasize the new Captiva’s sporting intentions. Viewing the new model from the A-pillars back, the Captiva retains its handsome profile, characterized by a subtle rising shoulder line. All of these design changes contribute to a stronger, more athletic stance but also ensure the new Captiva has a look that is immediately recognizable as one of the new breed of Chevrolets. The re-sculptured and more muscular wheel arches will be able to accommodate wheel sizes of between 17 and 19 inches; SCENE 31

and setting the Captiva’s body off perfectly is a range of exterior colours. Power with efficiency – two new engines It is under the Captiva’s new bonnet that the most far reaching changes have taken place. Two new powerful engines will be available, combined with a new manual or automatic six-speed transmission. They will give Chevrolet customers a smooth, purposeful and efficient drive experience and make the new Captiva one of the most powerful compact SUVs on the European market. The new engine line-up, which is comprised of two turbodiesel variants both of 2.2 litre displacement, incorporates a host of advanced technologies, aimed at delivering an optimal balance of performance and fuel economy. Customers can be sure of getting the latest in diesel technology and efficiency. The new 2.2 litre unit will be available in two power outputs of 163 or 184 hp. This latest generation 32 SCENE

engine is an advanced, four cylinder dual overhead cam (DOHC) turbocharged unit featuring a highpressure common rail fuel injection system and variable geometry turbo charger (VGT) with intercooler. Major makeover for interior The Captiva’s upgraded interior now features an array of new finishes and textures, including all-new seat fabrics and improved interior décor appointments like satin chrome rings around the vents, to give the car a more up-market feel and look. Designers have put to good use some of the elements featured on other new Chevrolet models, such as the ice-blue back lighting and the ‘wrap-round’ design of the front fascia which flows into the driver’s and front passenger’s doors, creating the Chevrolet dual-cockpit look. The Captiva’s audio system includes Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity as standard, with commands integrated within the steering wheel. A seven-inch navigation system is standard on

LTZ models with full European road coverage and integrated rear view camera for parking assistance. The audio speakers have been re-positioned in the doors, while passengers will enjoy their audio experience all the more thanks to a raft of engineering improvements to the interior acoustics, including improved isolation on the windshield, doors and headlining, all of which has resulted in reduced road, wind and engine noise.

S world.

ince the opening, in Bromley, of IGF Restaurant and Cocktail Bar, the venue has really made its mark in the entertainment

When you walk through the doors of IGF, you are met by the full size figures of Marilyn Monroe, Al Capone and Humphrey Bogart, with The Rat Pack posing over the magnificent curved bar, which resembles a gigantic film reel. No expense has been spared; the décor is amazing, stylish and sophisticated and must be seen to be believed. Upstairs is a VIP lounge where you can relax in luxurious seating overlooking the dance floor and DJ, and drink your champagne (if that’s your tipple). Throughout the month, IGF host many events and this month they are presenting Diva Night (6th April), Bollywood Night (13th April), and on 28th April they are winding back time to the 80’s classics, so you can dance the night away to some of your old favourites. There are also tribute nights and, on 20th April, you can swoon over Robbie Williams or, on 27th April, you can try out your moon walking with Michael Jackson.

To add to their achievement, IGF has “Unique Dining”, which starts the moment you open the menu, with a vast selection of fine foods from all over the world. Whether it’s a lad’s lunch with a metre of pizza, a business meeting with a selection of the new international tapas selection, or a romantic dinner for two in the VIP lounge, you will receive a warm welcome.

When it comes to mixing cocktails, you will certainly be in for a treat (Tom Cruise eat your heart out). These guys will have you clapping, cheering and gasping in amazement as they show you how it should be done. A fantastic time awaits you. IN THIS MONTH’S SCENE EATS, EXECUTIVE CHEF AND RESTAURANT DIRECTOR, NICK CONSTANTINE, SHARES THE SECRET RECIPE OF ONE OF PLAZA’S MOST POPULAR DISHES.

SPINACH AND FETA CHEESE FILLO PASTRY PARCELS For 8 parcels (4 people) Ingredients: - 4 bunch of fresh spinach - 200gr of greek feta cheee - 20gr fresh mint (finely chopped) - ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon - Packet of fillo pastry - Melted butter Method: pick the stalks off the spinach and wash the leaves in cold water then blanch in hot water for 30 seconds. Take out and put in cold water and then drain that too. When you have done that squeeze out any remaining water and chop finely. Place in a bowl and break the fetta cheese. Add the finely chopped fresh mint, and the cinnamon and mix well. Lay the fillo pastry flat with a wet cloth over it so it doesn’t get dry. With a sharp knive cut strips about 4 inches across. Lay the sheets of the cut fillo pastry and put the filling on the corner of each one and fold to the end. Before the last fold brush melted butter to stick . When finished brush all parcels with melted butter and place in a hot oven of 220 degrees for about ten minutes. When golden brown the parcels are ready to be served. You can serve with mixed leaves (ideal for a nice healthy Spring lunch). Plaza Mediterranean Bar & Grill 366 Crofton Road, Locks Bottom Orpington, Kent BR6 8NN Telephone/ Reservations: 01689 859 000

D ESIGNS

WITH THE UK’S LEADING CONTEMPORARY HOME SHOW, GRAND DESIGNS LIVE RETURNING TO LONDON’S EXCEL BETWEEN 5 – 13 MAY 2012. WE DECIDED TO SHOWCASE THE GRANDEST DESIGN COMPANIES THAT KENT HAS TO OFFER…

Clive Christian Brentwood Described by the commissioning editor of the Sunday Times Style magazine as “someone who has strengthened British brands” Clive is as well known for his breathtaking interiors as he is for his uniquely expensive perfumes, with a devoted following across the globe from premier league football stars to award-winning musicians, politicians, entrepreneurs and Hollywood stars. Clive’s own philosophy when designing is to “Design it first - to be the absolute best it can be – then cost it” so that the end result is always focused on the clients vision not budget. The philosophy of the Clive Christian Design House is to create rooms that are both timeless and luxurious, inspired by periods of great British architecture and to partner with the finest in current technology.

These values ultimately bring an established character to the interior, transforming a new build property into a home with soul or complementing a period home with architectural and design echoes from the time of their creation. The Architectural Design Style is designed for the larger luxury property due to the enhanced details and grand scale - the Architectural kitchen in Ivory and British Antique grey glaze and Black Oak is now installed in the Clive Christian Brentwood showroom followed by the Architectural Dining Room in the same Clive Christian ‘cool-luxury’ colour palette. 131 High Street, Brentwood, Essex, CM14 4RZ Tel: 01277 223016 Web: www.clive.com SCENE 41

An interview with Kevin McCloud GRAND DESIGNS HAS GAINED A HUGE FOLLOWING IN THE UK OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS, AND HOST, kevin mCCloud, WILL BE AT THE LONDON SHOW MEETING FANS, CHAIRING DEBATES IN THE GRAND THEATRE AND SHARING HIS GRAND DESIGN EXPERIENCES WITH VISITORS.

L

ots of people are deciding not to sell their homes - improving rather than moving. What one thing can people do to improve their living space? It is interesting when the recession came when it did…..many people for example felt it was the right opportunity to focus on - instead of the clutter of consumerism making their homes a little bit more tailored and bespoke. And the one thing I have to say about Grand Designs is, yes, of course it is about building and construction, BUT it is also about investing in things –and investing well! Many people call Grand Designs a property programme and that is simply not true, I have never thought of it as a property programme. It is about personal journeys, commitment and investment. The recession and current climate gives all of us an opportunity to stop and check our position – to check if these objects and places that we own are really ours and if we bought them for

48 SCENE

ourselves and if we can build a lasting relationships with them. It’s an opportunity to find some pleasure in ownership. We like to furnish our homes idiosyncratically. Because people are moving less, we have an opportunity to now decide for ourselves what it is about our homes that we like and what we want to keep or change – do we want to keep a dining room for example? Or should we knock through the dining room….I mean, I think of Balmoral and think, yes, their dining rooms are probably still used, but - and this may be a generalisation - but many of us live in our kitchens now and won’t often use a dining room. So it’s time to look at things like the dining room and see if it is utilised in its current form and has a relevant purpose in our lives. At Grand Designs Live this year, we will be looking at various home solutions and offering free advice consultations - from 9ft high glass extensions that can be bolted on

to the back of homes to basement conversions. My friend for example has recently done his basement and added a kitchen to make it this beautiful living space. But it is important to realise, that any home improvement / alteration or addition, has to work for you and how you live. What’s the best way to add value to your home? You can look down to basements, up to lofts, out to the garden to build new living spaces, but I don’t think in monetary value - I believe in investing in passion and ideas. In fact, I have gone out of my way to avoid putting an emphasis on money and turning a quick buck. Grand Designs the TV show and Grand Designs Live, is about the long term – about people putting down roots and connecting to where they live. It is all about adding what you value personally. So do I really value a power shower, actually, yes I do…. I’d like a low flow power shower that doesn’t use too much water and is eco-logical, but actually

I want a power shower, and, if I didn’t have it, I would actually end up having a bath and using even more water…you have to work through these questions. Changes in any home need to be tailored to your personality and your needs. I think one of the most adventurous things you can do for example, to add personal value, is to commission a piece of furniture – you are evolving something that is being made in a very bespoke way for you and you build a relationship with the maker which is a lovely thing. Your home space should provide you with comfort and delight – and that is what design can give you as well as an ongoing relationship and appreciation of your home possessions. That is value. I am also fascinated by the tactile qualities of things…..and I think we too often live in a rather plastic world; you know, poly cotton sheets, synthetic clothing, plastic chairs, plastic computers. One thing we are missing is the tactility of the world to us. I would add personal value and fulfilment by investing in the things you have to touch everyday – so door handles, taps, for example. in the noughties we were knocking down walls to create big open spaces, but has this

improved the quality of living or did the victorians have it right with the more rooms the better? You can swap rooms around and knock through rooms – there is no need to stick to the original layout if it doesn’t work for you and your needs. We are really attached to this engrained idea that upstairs is bedroom, down stairs is living and actually we can change it all round! Swap it around so it makes sensible and versatile solutions – for example, the kitchen moves to the front of the house where you bring in all the goods, take out the garbage. Move your laundry upstairs so it is near all the bedrooms when you strip down the beds of linen, etc. You need to make a house work for you rather than the other way around. It is also important to think twenty years ahead and plan solutions now to ensure long term fulfilment – for example, will I be able to handle the stairs in this property in 20 years? If not, where could the lift go? Think about it now.

in these more budget-conscious times, are there certain building jobs you would always leave to the professionals? The more you do yourself, of course, the cheaper things are, but you are also more prone to disaster and failure. Nothing is free of worry or risk, or cost. There are cheaper solutions to everything and, ironically enough, I think architects are very good at thinking of cheaper solutions, partly because they have to, as they don’t earn very much and have had to think of solutions for their own home very often. Even when it is a small scale project, it is always important to ask the advice of someone who is skilled and gifted in this area - they will offer you solutions, ideas and a fresh perspective. Good professionals, designers or architects will pay for themselves. I can tell when a building or an extension, hasn’t been designed or thought through – and so can most people. There is always that wonderful sense of abdication when you get someone professional on board to help you and take on responsibility of a project. In these times of austerity, it is tempting to go for cheaper items and concepts, but you will always feel more affection and appreciation with beautifully made things that you bring in, or add to your home. It is a time now to refocus on our homes and go for quality and invest in craftsmanship, and ultimately longevity. SCENE 49

it will be spring soon, how does your home change throughout the seasons? To me, a home is a personal space and should simply reflect who you are. If you have inherited family heirlooms or kept nostalgic things from your childhood, cherish these objects and build your look around them. Having a home with wow factor is not about trends or having good taste - it’s about having conviction. You don’t have to buy lots of expensive things to give your home designer style. The art of creating a great home is to get a cohesive look by mixing expensive items with carefully selected cheaper products that look good together. Demand interest and originality – celebrate the uniqueness of where you live The most interesting and enriching homes are those that are full of autobiography. What’s your favourite way to bring the outdoors in? The kitchen garden - you grow your own. I have a fanciful notion, but not an impractical one, that one day the average sized town in Europe, Australia and America will be largely self-sustaining in food terms – growing much of what it needs within a radius of - say, 30 miles. Food growing and transportation is responsible for about 20 per cent of our carbon emissions. favourite kitchen gadget? Miele dishwashers come with the ‘Triple A’ stamp of approval and they are very efficient, using little energy, water and detergent to keep running costs down and protect the environment. favourite period of property? I appreciate form and design in all shapes , styles and sizes – it is impossible to pick one. radiator or underfloor heating? I’m quite a fan of ground source heat pumps, when properly installed – (cooling system that pumps heat to or from the ground, usually used to heat radiators or underfloor 50 SCENE

heating systems and hot water.) Paint or wallpaper? Paint – in particular eco-paint. how important do you think it is to embrace microgeneration? Every breath we take as human beings damages the planet. As homeowners, we need look no further than our own four walls to find a way to reduce carbon emissions, save money on our energy bills and tackle climate change, but help must be given to homeowners on every street in Britain to green their homes and make tangible solutions. We must all move towards de-carbonization and becoming ‘off grid’ – we need to seize all opportunities to move towards a low carbon life, and, one day, zero carbon life. Human energy is the last green resource we have!” What microgeneration technology do you recommend? A little pet favourite project of mine, you will see at Grand Designs Live – it is called Kevin’s Green heroes. It is an exhibit that is entirely focused on new eco technologies and brilliant people who aren’t yet in the public eye, but who deserve to be. I keep a list in my phone or note of who I meet and what I see and we put it together as an exhibit and it is a great thing to see it materialize. This year, amongst other innovations, we have, PVT

Hybrid panels to create a solarbased hybrid electricity, domestic hot water and heating solution. Design guru, Kevin McCloud, returns to London’s Excel between 5 – 13 May 2012 as host of Grand Designs Live sponsored by Direct Line - the innovative home improvement, self-build and design show. The show boasts over 500 exhibitors, across 7 different sections, and offers free consultations and inspiration for both home owners looking for new design and renovation ideas, and aspiring self-builders looking for advice for their very own Grand Design. 21 Mar-19 Apr Now the expensive time arises bringing everything together that you had hoped for. It will be the makings of you and you should be prepared to take the lead in all things possible and impossible. An opening of vast proportions lends itself to interesting possibilities where you can at last be yourself. Know that you are right on target and expect the best in all things.

23 Sep-22 Oct Thinking you are stuck is not the case. Planets move at a constant rate of change, so do our lives. Today is not the same as tomorrow. What has seemed like a stuck situation is but a moment in time to allow for certain adjustments needed to bring about those changes from now on. You will be smiling again and thankful for this temporary lull in activities.

Taurus 20 Apr-20 May This time of year is exciting for you, as all hard work that you have done begins to bear fruit. The time has been long and arduous, but well worth the rewards that come to you. Maintain a positive outlook so that you can relish in all good things. A sparkle will enter your soul as the new found experience sustains all your needs from now on.

Gemini 21 May-20 Jun Don’t be picky with what you do. What is needed is a much bolder approach to life and to the advantages that come to you now. By maintaining a positive stance you create for yourself an environment rich with opportunities and desires. All is there for your benefit, but you have to realise this for yourself. A change in atmosphere will see you reaching out to pastures new.

Cancer 21 Jun-22 Jul A gentle push is needed to get you up and running again. While you still doubt yourself you lose precious time and rewards. You deny yourself the advantages that are continually open to you. There is only a finite window of opportunity, ignore that window and you have lost vital positive chances for change until the planets move again in your favour.

Leo 23 Jul-22 Aug A brief interlude will occur, whereby you will be able to make a name for yourself. It will be charged with some difficulty, but the advantages far out reach the risks. Know that you are in the zone now and must take full advantage of what you are able to do to prove yourself worthy of these accolades – a master performance on your part where excellence is there.

Virgo 23 Aug-22 Sep Look, reflect on what you have achieved and what is still out there for you to achieve. Do not be complacent, but reach out to what you know to be true and honest. The sticky situation that surrounds you will gradually unfold leaving you in no doubt this is the best way to proceed and to honour yourself. Timing is everything. Going forwards is necessary. 56 SCENE

Scorpio 23 Oct-21 Nov Make an offer on that house/car now. See the positive outcome as you strike a healthy deal to overcome all your worries and fears. There has been a planetary shift to allow this to occur in your favour, so go with all haste and act according to what is now ultimately the best position you have been in for a long time.

Sagittarius 22 Nov-21 Dec Your life to change so dramatically in the next few months you won’t really know yourself as advantage over advantage is now opening for you and that wow factor is there for all to see and experience. You are unstoppable in so many ways. You are ahead of the game and must be seen now in a new and exciting light.

Capricorn 22 Dec-19 Jan As you look at the past and see just how far you have come and achieved, the new life beckons you with all hopes and no regrets. It remains positive and fruitful and transforms your life as never before. A beacon of light guides you onto the next stage of a fantastic life’s journey with no pitfalls, just joy and upliftment in so many ways.

Aquarius 20 Jan-18 Feb As you enter a phase of uncertainty, it is not the fear of the unknown that disturbs you, more the fact that you have been here before like a recurring dream. This is not the case. The black clouds of despair will fall away showing you a better way to live and be your own person again. You are stronger. The effects will diminish as before.

Pisces 19 Feb-20 Mar You enter a phase of a charmed life not known before. It’s a little unnerving as you need to adjust to a lifestyle that you had not thought possible. It comes in from the strangest of quarters to uplift, guide and to take you from relative obscurity to full recognition. It has lasting benefits which will elevate you into a life not even realised before.

MY SCENE Len Goodman & Arlene Phillips SCENE CATCHS UP WITH LEN GOODMAN AND ARLENE PHILLIPS WHO HAVE JOINED FORCES WITH GLAXOSMITHKLINE (GSK) AND NHS LONDON TO LAUNCH YOUR PERSONAL BEST CAMPAIGN, ENCOURAGING OVER 55s WITH LONG TERM HEALTH CONDITIONS TO LEAD A MORE ACTIVE LIFESTYLE.

Words by Danielle Pomerance

What inspired you to become a dancer? Len: When I was 21, I injured my foot playing football. A good friend of mine went to dance classes and told me about all the girls there and how much fun it was so I thought why not. Then I discovered I really liked it. Arlene: I always wanted to dance and started at a very young age. At the age of eight or nine I decided this is what I wanted to do. Dance has been with me ever since, through the good times and the bad. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a dancer or get involved in the industry? Len: Enjoy what you do, work hard and, most importantly, carry on doing it until you stop enjoying yourself. Arlene: You will get out of it what you put in, so you have to have the right attitude and desire from the start. What motivated you to get involved with the NHS London and GlaxoSmithKline in the over 55’s ‘Your Personal Best’ campaign? Len: I can relate to people of that age as I am that age and I believe that as we get

58 SCENE

older it is important to keep ourselves active, both mentally and physically. I joined the campaign to help motivate others and I have found the information I have learnt and the people I have met has actually inspired me. Arlene: I have always encouraged people to exercise and get themselves active for wellbeing and health conditions. This is a campaign I can relate to and that I am happy to be involved in. What if anything do you feel you have gained from being part of the campaign? Len: I got so much out of the whole thing, especially the day we had in February with the NHS, GlaxoSmithKline and the winners of the SAGA competition. That day was ‘terrific’. I had something put on my finger, attached to a monitor, and it was incredible seeing how minor movements can affect

your heart rate and your blood pressure. It was also really interesting hearing about getting more active within the home. Arlene: I’ve had my belief in exercise and movement reinforced. I found the knowledge given to us that day so interesting, I was there to support but I also learnt. Other than your involvement with dance, what do you personally do to keep yourself fit and active? Len: I play golf which involves a lot of walking and I cycle but I prefer that in the summer. Sometimes I just prune the garden - a lot of people don’t realise it but it is still good physical activity. Arlene: I swim regularly as I find it a great way to keep fit. I also always take the stairs when possible and run up them.
